Philippine idol

I like ABC-5’s Philippine Idol.

I like it that the judges -Ryan Cayabyab, Pilita Corrales, and Francis Magalona are natural. None of them try to be Simon Cowell which is what other judges in other reality shows try hard to be.

They know their business and they are all credible. Especially Ryan. Their comments are constructive. They don’t humiliate those they reject.

I missed the beginning because I watched Oprah (with Christian Amanpour and Ricky Martin on sex trafficking) but the credits showed it was the Davao audition.

I find the pacing a bit slow and Ryan Agoncillo is a little wooden. But okay na rin because he is not OA.

What a change! From politics to entertainment. Oh yes, the three judges are excellent choices. Who between Ryan and Francis would play the role of Simon? Both are polite. Pilita fits the shoes of Paula. I just got one question, though. Why call “Philippine Idol” not “Filipino Idol”? In the US, it’s “American Idol” not “America Idol” and in Canada it’s “Canadian Idol” not “Canada Idol”.

  2. I don’t think neither Ryan Cayabyab nor Francis would be Simon Cowell because they are not Simon Cowell. They are Ryan and Francis, established in their own field. That’s what they bring into the reality show.

I agree. But let’s face it, the “Philippine Idol” is patterned after American Idol (I refrain from saying copycat). And the judges are two males and one female (similar to American Idol). The difference is none of our three judges is black. I don’t think it’s real to see all three judges being polite without any one as critical and vocal as Simon. As the show goes on, there will be arguments and clash of opinions among the judges. And the Simon style would add flavor to it. Ryan is more matured and professional. I think it would be Francis who would play Simon’s role whether he likes it or not.

I suggest we should have made the Philippine Idol unique and distinct than the other “idols”. Instead, they should have the lady judge being the critical one and the two male judges the polite ones. But since Pilita Corales just too sweet to play the part, and the other two are what they are, then let’s go with the show and let Simon be Simon…

philippine idol? ah, masyado tayong mahilig sa showbiz. tuloy pati magagaling sa showbiz pilit nating isinasaksak sa politics. iyong mga wannabes sa politics, kumukuha ng media exposure at “experience” sa showbiz bago sumabak sa politics. ang haba ng listahan ng mga taong ganyan that are now occupying various positions, from mayoral upto the highest position of the land! kaya ang mga woes natin as a nation, sa atin din dapat isisi. what a country!

lakay, it’s sometimes good to take a break from dirty politics and talk about showbiz. After all, is there mcuh difference between showbiz and politics? That could be the reason why Ellen posted it this time for a change.

vic, yes the three judges are all polite. We need at least one who’s critical. There are quite a few good candidates here in this group.

Dapat may “The Bicol Idol”.

That’s good entertainment.

now I know what really happen to ‘nuweba segobya’?

    To All:

    what a province!

    what a region!

    what a country!

    what a people!

  12. One of the industries that kinda easy to put up with quick ROI is the tourism industry.

Tourism generates other industries quickly too.

The pre-requisites to make tourism a viable industry are kinda stiff but in this Gloria-run nation, they become even stiffer because on the whole, the Philippines has everything that could make it one of the greatest tourist attractions in the world and one of the tops in the region.

For starters, the Philippines has all the natural, scenic locations everywhere, but virtually everywhere, that travellers will be in awe of. Secondly, Filipinos know the meaning of hospitality because of their excellent sense of service and thirdly, the country has a fantastic blend of Western and Far Eastern cultures.

The dilemma is that the Philippines is extremely unstable politically. The nation’s tourism insfrastructures suffers from this political instability which also brings out lawlessness.

A tourist wants to enjoy and not to be constantly worried about being held up or killed. He has only a few days, a couple of weeks to do that and why would he risk that visitng a country that has a sordid reputation for lawlesness? Malaysia which cannot pride itself of having a hospitable people has become a regular tourism venues for Europeans. Why so? Because tourists know that the level of lawlessness is a trifle compared to the Philippines.

Political instability is so intertwined with lawlessness to a traveller’s mind that he writes off the Philippines. This is the crux of the matter. The absence of adequate tourism infrastructures which naturally lure travellers to visit tourism sites almost seem negligible in the face of those daunting facts.

A friend who jsut came from Malaysia said the news about the Philippines last week was about the Black Eyed Peas dancing on their heads in Malacanang. Complete with pictures!

In the lcoal papers, I saw three Malacanang officals, bunye, arthur Yap and Mike Defensor dancing the hiphop with the BEP.

We are the laughing stock of the world!

  14. “We are the laughing stock of the world! ”

Hahahah! Frankly, I was a bit dumbfounded when I saw their pic.

I sort of thought, “Aha! The mice are at play while the cat is away” (coz that was the time moral bansot was in hospital having her beauty or ugly cure) on top of which I thought, “Why on earth should a nation’s top-ranking cabinet members in full regalia spend precious time entertaining entertainers?”

  15. Si Pilita Corrales ba iyong nasa pic? Wow, she’s changed. Last time I saw her on TV was some 35 years ago (or more?)… She used to have this Evening with Pilita show and was neck on neck with Carmen Soriano.

The fitting adage for Pilita would be “Bending it like Beckham” (the football star) which was also the title of a film with a British star of Indian origin. (If you have the opportunity to get your hands on a DVD of the film, I recommend you watch it – great film!)

    grabe talaga! what a friend!

Dominique, Ermita and Defensor are called “Black Peanuts”. Speaking of this Alan Pineda, the Fil-Am member of the Black Eye Peas, he’s rumored to be courting the American Idol finalist Jasmine Trias.

Someone here corrected me that Canadian Idol is also patterned after American Idol. Yes of course. And there’s nothing wrong if we patterned after America’s. For one thing, I think we bought the franchise or right to have one in the Philippines. This show originated from England where Simon comes from. There’s also one from Australia. So, we can say that all are patterned after England’s.
