Arroyo’s delusion

The more Gloria Arroyo opens her mouth about North Korea, the more ridiculous she sounds.

Last Monday, she bested all Southeast Asian leaders in issuing a statement condemning North Korea’s nuclear test. Yesterday, she said North Korea’s nuclear test is a Damocles’ sword over Asia and underscored that the Philippines is “within striking distance” of a nuclear weapon fired from Pyongyang.

News reports said although it is widely believed that North Korea’s announcement of a successful nuclear test is true, the Hermit Kingdom has not yet developed a delivery system for its nuclear weapon.

But even if it does have, pray, tell me, why would North Korea bother with the Philippines?
gmawalking.jpg kinjongilB.jpg

Between North Korea and the Philippines, there’s neighboring South Korea, with whom Nokor has a lot of issues, and Japan. There’s also Taiwan.

It’s the height of Arroyo’s delusion to think that Kim Jong Il will waste his most prized weapon on the Philippines. Doesn’t Arroyo know that Kim Jong Il only takes on the biggies (Ex: George Bush)? He is not known to waste time on fellow pygmies.

Arroyo also said, “Nuclear weapons have no more place in a shrinking world that places a premium on understanding and harmony where our overriding interest is the pursuit of world peace, the resolution of economic imbalances and the global fight against poverty.”

Nice words. But can she tell that to her idol, George Bush, whose country leads the Nuclear Club with more than 5,000 strategic warheads, more than 1,000 operational tactical weapons and approximately 3,000 reserve and tactical warheads?

Russia has nearly 5,000 strategic warheads, and approximately 3,500 operational tactical warheads. In addition, it has more than 11,000 strategic and tactical warheads in storage. Other nuclear states are China, Britain, France, India, Israel, and Pakistan.

The most laughable part of Arroyo’s statement was when she said that “Pyongyang’s nuclear ambitions put (Filipinos’) freedom at risk.”

Why, was it Kim Jong Il who declared Proclamation 1017 and arrested those who demanded that she stepped down because she was never elected by the people? Was it Kim Jong Il who ordered demonstrators to be truncheoned under the policy of Calibrated Pre-emptive response?

Is it Kim Jong Il who is propagating a “culture of impunity” that give rise to extrajudicial killings of journalists and activists?

What has Kim Jong Il’s nuclear weapons got to do with her trampling of the Constitution and destruction of institutions to hold on to her stolen presidency?

Arroyo’s strong words on North Korea sound bizarre against the backdrop of labor officials assuring those who are applying for jobs in South Korea that the tension in the Korean peninsula will not affect the processing of their papers. They will be joining the more than 50,000 Filipino workers in South Korea, many of them doing the “dirty and dangerous” jobs shunned by South Koreans.

Those Filipinos are fleeing the country because they can’t find jobs here. A third of the 86 million Filipinos live in poverty and are deprived of the most fundamental freedom in life i- freedom from want.

It’s bad enough that the standard of living in the country has worsened in the five years that Arroyo has been in power. She should not add insult to injury by telling us that Kim Jong Il’s nuclear weapons have something to do with our poverty.

Who “declared Proclamation 1017 and arrested those who demanded that she stepped down because she was never elected by the people?…who ordered demonstrators to be truncheoned under the policy of Calibrated Pre-emptive response?…who is propagating a “culture of impunity” that give rise to extrajudicial killings of journalists and activists?…”

“IT” is called a GLORIA, the Philippines’ nuclear weapon, or better yet, the country’s weapon of mass destruction who continuously squats in the Palace by the river.

King Jong II and Gloria are probably the most LUNATIC LEADERS in ASIA today! The man seems to be tripping on the world with his nuclear weapons, while the woman enjoys power tripping.

Kulang ang pansin! Illegitimate Gloria trying to act Presidential without moral authority. She just want to be heard when no one giving her the time of the day. Quite pathetic of a woman desperately wants to be noticed globally. Gloria, a woman without any credential of credibility whatsoever. And she’s taking the country down along with her piteous behavior. It’s best for Gloria to keep her door shut, also much better for the country as well. The country couldn’t afford any confrontation with any country, as its stand right now all our kababayans are scattered all over the world and for all we know, just I guess in my part, that there may be some Pilipinos in NOKOR. Wild guess, just could be, since we got Pinoys in Afghanistan and Iraq and why not NOKOR.

Just come to realize that whoever is writing the Presidential Speech, may be getting a stomach ache from laughing every time he or she hears the President delivers the piece. Maybe the President is too “high” on something everytime, she doesn’t even know what she is talking about. Or maybe just like Kim Jong II, really needs that attention she is not getting anywhere nowadays, except from her own Generals and Cronies as she lost those who even support her in the last election. But then again Glo is Glo, she is what she is, lots of egos and pride, but only keep afloat by the country Treasury, which like most politicians of high positions seem to be the custodians of every cash registers there is. Kling, kling, how much?

Illegitimate Gloria is just like a bragger noisy dog, loves to bark until get confronted, then it lower its tail between the legs. Bogus Gloria is out of her league on this one, way over her head, and she doesn’t even realize what are the stakes. Bogus is just a small time jueteng local player, and nuke are for the big boys. Bogus Gloria might be a supermaid to Asian powers or whatever she wants to be, but she has no business making statement without resources to back it up. All she got to show for are two old dilapidating patrol boats or is it Outrigger boat in Pasig River cleaning the stink.

Philippines are not in any position on making strong statement. We are what we are until we can prove that we are capable to shoulder some of the global responsibilities. Our law enforcement are nothing but keystone cops.

Mrs. Gloria Arroyo and her propaganda boys are fooling the Filipinos on Nokor’s nuclear threat attack on the Philippine soil. She has exploited the nuke test issue to divert public attention on her poor governance and discredited Malacanang-sponsored PI Singaw charter change. Maybe Kim Jong II does not even know where on earth Islas Filipinas is located. There’s no valid reason for North Korea to “nuke” the Philippines even though the Taepodong-2 long range missiles can hit its target at a given point. What’s the purpose of nuking tactical targets without invading or occupying? The North Koreans have no large navy to invade and control the 7,100 islands nation. Besides the Pyongyang government can hardly feeds its people and heavily relies food donations from China, United States, South Korea and Japan. It needs millions tons of grains and war materiel to support an invading army and occupation forces in the Philippines. Mrs. Arroyo should focus on local problems that wrecked our nation apart such as poverty, the aftereffects of Typhoon Milenyo and imminent power crisis. What’s the latest update on Guimaras oil spill disaster, Joc-Joc Bolante fertilizer scam, peace talks with the rebel groups-NDF and MILF, bankrupt AFP Retirement and Separation Benefits System (RSBS) scam, OWWA trust fund scam and Comelec-Mega Pacific P1.3 B misdeal. The wrath of the Filipino people (ANGER) is enough to NUKE puny rodent Gloria and Jose Pidal crime family to ground zero.

The pygmy braggart is again trying to get the attention of her estranged “friend” Bush who refuses to give her the time of day…much less a state visit.

  10. The short one lambasts her kind. Both are despots, both are indifferent to their people, both live like royalty, both are psychologically unstable, both think their countries are first world, both are morally bansot and both when buried six feet under vertically wouldn’t reach the surface. Oh and yes, both have kingdoms of their own, one is a hermit and the other enchanted. Talk about dillusions of grandeur….both believe they are the saviors of their people and see themselves as gods. They’ll do anything and say anything just to be noticed. And I hope both be tried for crimes against humanity.

Here’s what Japan intends to do with North Korea. You can bet your bottom dollar that South Korea, China and the US have been duly informed of this.

We, the citizens of Japan, are likewise aware of everything our government intends to do. Telebabad nga ako kahapon watching the interpolation live at the Diet. No dissenting voice even from the oppositions that include the socialists and the communists for the good of Japan.

Ship checks ruled out as Abe eyes more sanctions

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Tuesday the government may impose harsher unilateral economic sanctions on North Korea after Pyongyang carried out what it said was an atomic test Monday.

Seismic waves measured at various points around Japan at the time of the North Korean test Monday are explained by a staff member of the Meteorological Agency in Tokyo.

The House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution condemning North Korea’s nuclear test, demanding that it immediately abandon its nuclear arms program and unconditionally return to the six-nation talks aimed at ending its atomic threat.

Japan and its allies are trying to confirm the test, which is likely to take a few days, government officials said.

The United States, Japan and others in the region have been closely monitoring North Korea after it announced on Oct. 3 its intention to conduct a nuclear test.

“If North Korea worsens the situation, it will have to suffer the consequences,” Abe told a Lower House Budget Committee session Tuesday. “Japan needs to take severe, unilateral measures as soon as possible.

“If North Korea did conduct a nuclear test, we absolutely cannot tolerate it because it is a challenge to the peace and stability of this region.”

The prime minister added that North Korea is a “serious threat” to Japan because Pyongyang’s missile arsenal gives it the potential to launch a nuclear strike.

Among the harsher sanctions, the government is considering a ban on all North Korean vessels entering Japanese ports, government officials said.

Japan imposed unilateral sanctions on Pyongyang after it conducted missile tests over the Sea of Japan on July 5. The measures included a six-month ban on port calls by the North Korean ferry Mangyongbong-92, the only passenger link between Japan and the North. North Korean officials have also been barred from entering Japan and screening of other visitors has been tightened.

The government also strengthened financial sanctions last month.

One of the key questions in Tuesday’s budget committee session was whether Japan will join in international inspections of North Korean freighters — a provision included in the U.S.-sponsored draft resolution submitted to the U.N. Security Council in response to the nuclear test.

Junji Higashi, a senior member of New Komeito, voiced concern about Japanese participation in such inspections, saying it would imply Japan was exercising the right of belligerency, which is barred under the pacifist Constitution.

Apparently sharing these concerns, Foreign Minister Taro Aso downplayed the possibility of Japan taking part.

“Japan is not thinking of expanding sanctions to cargo inspections,” he said.

Another concern is how tighter sanctions might affect Japanese importers of North Korean products, including “matsutake” mushrooms and marine products.

But Akira Amari, minister of economy, trade and industry, said the government will take steps to assist importers that might suffer from tougher sanctions.

Experts point out that additional unilateral measures will have a limited impact on North Korea.

“It simply means Japan will move forward the imposition (of sanctions) stated in the draft resolution” currently under discussion in the U.N. Security Council, said Hajime Izumi, professor of international relations at the University of Shizuoka. “But unilateral sanctions will not have much effect.”

Izumi added that expanded sanctions would merely extend the ban on port calls by the North Korean ferry add other limited measures, since Japan has already hit Pyongyang with economic sanctions after the missile tests.

The focus, Izumi said, would be whether Japan and the U.S. can gain support from China, South Korea and Russia in adopting a new U.N. resolution with tighter restrictions on North Korea.

The U.S. draft resolution calls for action under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which authorizes international economic sanctions or military action to deal with threats to international peace and security.

Exactly, Ellen, why should Kim bother with the Philippines? Wala namang pumapansin sa ungas as a matter of fact.

I don’t see the Pandak getting quoted worldwide, in fact, no matter how much she tries hard to act as the Spokesperson of leaders in S.E.A, which is five or more hours away from NoKor, and would be unreachable by NoKor’s missiles.

Despite the bragging as a matter of fact, NoKor’s missiles have not reached Japanese shores. If ever, most likely to be hit will be Niigata Prefecture that is right across in fact the area where the nuke testings are done.

At this writing, a second one is believed to have been detonated underground at the same area where the first one was done. There has been similar seismic activity that is why. This is being investigated at the moment.

I am in favor of Korean Unification led by its people, in contrast to Hideki Yamaji’s dilemma of neither NK nor SK led unification.

Mr. Yimaji in his paper presented to the Brookings institution said that “Japan Should Prepare in Worst Case Scenario”:

In the event of succesful unification of two Koreas, and if U-K chooses to be allied with China and hostile to Japan , one option for Japan is to militarily confront Korea over the Tsu Shima Straits.

Japan should guide instead the Koran Peninsula or the North East Asia in particular for a demilitarization of the region.
They should scrap the idea of the so called Security Triangle between US, Japan and S.Korea.

What the Koreans showed the other day was only a display of the new “DOUBLE TEN” in the International Relations.

The new Double Ten in Hangul form!!!

Congratulations to the people of North Korea!

  33. Tell you what Nelbar, Japan has no intention to influence anyone, not directly anyway. Japan is safer being friendly to all, even Iran for that matter. If the unified Korea will have a leader who will ask for Japan’s help, for the sake of peace and free trade, Japan, no doubt, will agree to help but not meddle directly in the affairs of another country. This is national policy as a matter of fact.

This Yamaji is just one Japanese enjoying the kind of freedom we all enjoy as a matter of fact. No fear of being gunned down and having some innocent individual own to it! He does not speak for everyone in Japan as a matter of fact.

Presidential order directs sale of 33 military camps to ‘land developers’

    Gloria duping AFP on housing

    By Angie M. Rosales

    10/11/2006

There appears to be another big scam in the Malacañang making, with the soldiers allegedly being duped by the Palace with claims of low-cost housing projects to gain their loyalty.

The reality, so it is alleged, is that with the sale of almost 75 percent of the land assets of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to so-called “land developers” will allegedly be erecting high cost, high rise buildings in prime AFP properties which the soldiers can hardly afford, with units costing at least P1.4 million and a P50,000 amortization a month.

The “land-sale for 99 years” deal is alleged to be granted to Malacañang-favored land developers but this will hardly be of benefit to the soldiery.

Furthermore, these fire sales for military land, it is being alleged, is being done at the same time the defense establishment has announced the sale of the bankrupt pension fund assets.

This was bared during a Senate hearing on defense matters, which the executives again snubbed, using various reasons, with one citing Memorandum Circular (MC) 108, which prohibits officials in the executive department from appearing and testifying at congressional hearings.

Executive Order 464, the original presidential gag order, has been junked by the Supreme Court with finality, but President Arroyo replaced this with her MC 108, thus circumventing the SC ruling.

Malacanang yesterday was accused of hastily disposing military real estate properties, placing at least 33 camps of the AFP, covering almost 75 percent of its “assets”, up for sale.

Senate probers, despite the continued implementation of the so-called gag order on Cabinet and other high-ranking officials from the executive that bars the upper chamber’s committee on national defense and security chaired by Sen. Rodolfo Biazon from pursuing the reported impending closure of the AFP’s pension fund or the Retirement and Separation Benefits System (RSBS), got more than what they needed, after having been told of a presidential issuance subjecting 33 out of the 225 military camps to “housing developments”, some of which would not even be “titled” as government-owned.

This was bared, along with the disclosure made by military officials sent to represent AFP Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon in the Senate’s public hearing yesterday, that the recently-inaugurated low-cost housing program, the Bonifacio Heights, is in reality, not a project meant for the defense establishment particularly the soldiers, but that of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC). And these disclosures were enough to earn the ire of Senator Biazon, former AFP chief of staff, in addition to the snubbing of the proceedings of the invited officials.

Previous reports said the low-cost housing program was launched several months ago purportedly to appease the grumbling ranks in the military, especially those not wanting to experience the eviction of retired officers staying inside the Fort Bonifacio premises.

Information yielded by Navy Capt. Rafaelito Sacdalan of the AFP real estate office and Commodore Rico Borromeo, Biazon said during the hearing, bolstered what his sources tipped him off recently over the alleged unseen hands working in the shadows, pushing the disposal of so-called military reservations to land developers – not to be sold, but to be used for a period of time, by as much as 99 years, such in the case of Bonifacio Heights.

“I understand the area is being disposed through the principle of usufruct use, meaning, the land is not sold to the developers but is allowed to be used by the developer for a period of 99 years.

“Now on top of this is the present flurry of policy statements being issued by the Executive Department on the proposed disposition of military real estate properties to support the AFP modernization. But…I do not see the release of that 35 percent that is supposed to form part of the trust fund of P50 billion. I do not see the P50 billion, 11 years since the law had been enacted,” Biazon pointed out.

“You know why I’m raising these questions? There seems to be a flurry of interest by certain hidden agents on the acquisition of land,” he told the AFP officials present before him.

“Why the coincidence? …In the policy statements being issued to the public that RSBS properties will be disposed of? That AFP properties will be disposed of? Are there agents moving in the shadows that are interested in the acquisition of these properties? Although I treat this as just speculative, but this speculation had been transmitted to me by many sectors. Why the coincidence?” asked Biazon.

The senator announced in the hearing that he later cut short due to the absence of the invited Cabinet officials, that it has come to his attention that the Bonifacio Heights project is not a socialized housing scheme for soldiers.

“How can the soldiers afford one unit, minimum cost more than P800,000 that will require amortization of more than P8,000 a month? There are units that cost P1.4 million and there are awardees who acquired as much as four units. You think I did not know?

“What’s behind this greed of developers and using the soldiers as an excuse for this? That is the reason I am interested in this…and I wish I could ask those questions to these policy level of the executive department but they are not here. They cannot provide me the answer. And I know you cannot provide me the answer. I do not blame you for that,” he told Sacdalan and Borromeo.

Sacdalan “shared”, without any provocation from the committee, information saying that the Bonifacio Heights is under the administration of HUDCC and not the defense establishment.

Asked by Biazon on who stands as land owner, Sacdalan said it is the government, having been made as among those military reservation or camps declared by virtue of presidential proclamation No. 284 to be under the housing projects of the administration.

When pressed by the senator on who is the issuing authority, he was told that it was President Arroyo who signed the said presidential proclamation.

A review of the AFP’s properties during the hearing showed that of the 225 military camps all over the country, approximately 172 hectares, 33 of these were made to be covered by the said presidential proclamation.

Asked to the magnitude of the said property involved, Senate probers were told that it is translated to 127,000 hectares.

Furthermore, senators also learned that not all of them have land titles.

They claimed that they need not be titled, senators were told.

“They would even have the nerve to use the soldiers as an excuse, calling it socialized, low-cost housing. But Bonifacio Heights is not socialized not is it made of low-cost housing and therefore it’s wrong for anyone to say that it is for the soldiers. These are not for the soldiers….an amortization of P50,000 a month? What soldier can afford that? Even a four-star general cannot afford that!” a visibly irked senator said.

“We’re being fooled here again. They are fooling the soldiers. This bursts me up when the soldiers are being fooled and used by certain elements,” he said before dismissing the military officers and adjourning the proceedings.

Biazon intends to pursue this matter saying a separate investigation will be conducted later on.

Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz and Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes invoked memorandum circular order No. 108 as the reason for their snubbing of the proceedings while Solicitor General Eduardo Nachura and Esperon cited conflict in schedule that prevented them from attending the hearing.

Going to your topic mrivera, HUDCC is the front for the housing projects, but can you please take a look at some people HUDCC. I got info that some of the high ranking HUDCC people are raking up money in the so-called housing project of the government. Further, I got info that these people are raking up money at the centennial vilage in taguig, this housing is supposed to be for the low to mid level government employees, but sources says they were able to get a number of housing units and is renting it out to others, tsk tsk tsk…… kawawa naman talaga ang mga maliliit sa gobyerno.

RETIRED GENERAL FACES RAPS FOR P167-MILLION AFP SCAM

MANILA, October 13 , 2004 (STAR) A retired military general was barred yesterday from leaving the country as the Ombudsman prepared to indict him for a P167-million overpriced land scam.

Retired Army Brig. Gen. Jose Ramiscal, who has faced other corruption cases before the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court, was supposed to leave for the United States yesterday to visit a sick relative, Ombudsman investigators told STAR columnist Jarius Bondoc.

But the Office of the Ombudsman effectively prevented his departure after informing the anti-graft court, through a letter, of fresh charges against Ramiscal for the overpricing of land purchased in 1996 when he was president of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Retirement and Separation Benefits System (RSBS).

The Ombudsman is set to charge Ramiscal with violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and 148 counts of estafa for falsification of public documents. His co-accused are RSBS executives Capt. Perfecto Quilicot and lawyers Meinrado Enrique Bello and Manuel Satuito.

The case stemmed from the acquisition of RSBS of 600 hectares of land bordering Laguna and Batangas from Vintage Builders Corp. intended for a housing project.

The barrio was originally owned by 148 land title holders, Ombudsman probers said.

The RSBS, created under Presidential Decree 361, manages the retirement and pension funds of soldiers and deducts a four percent contribution from their monthly pay.

  44. You bet.

Dalawang beses pang pinagtubuan. Sa racket magaling ang mga animal.

Signs of the times; iyong mali nagiging tama, at iyong tama ang siya ngayong mali. Kawawang bansa!

In fact, nagba-blog ang mga iyan dito at tapos subukang ipatanggal by all means iyong hindi nila mabaluktot.

Now, can you blame me kung bakit mas gusto ko ang Japan?

Not to forget: General Lisandro Abadia, owns a golf course and has a mansion and a couple of other homes worth 10s of millions of pesos as well as being part owner of a restaurant in Cebu.

His brother, LtGeneral Loven Abadia, former CG PAF owns a home abroad and many business concerns.

Rear Admiral Pastor Ramos, is considered the richest member of the Armed Forces of the Philippines after he was put in charge of the engineering brigade by the National Pinatubo Commission (assigned there by Rene de Villa, erstwhile, chief of staff Armed Forces of the Philippines and DND Chief, who at the time was chair of the National Disaster Commission of the Philippines, handling billions of pesos and spending them without being audited.)

September 22, 2006 edition

  50. Just as I thought Nelbar. Kapag hindi kakampi ni Punggok, kulong. Pero kapag hahalik sa mabahong puwit niya, in na in. Sa totoo lang no need to read the rest of the story. Luma nang balita. Problema diyan e how do you remove the cronies in meaty positions lalo na iyong position in charge of prosecuting wannabe criminals like the Punggok. E kundi ba naman mga tanga, alam na ngang crony or kamag-anak o what have you, bakit nila kinu-confirm? Unbelievable talaga! Kaya all the more reason why we should blog here at tignan natin kung ano ang magagawa ng mga matiyaga. Sabi nga, “Daig ng matiyaga ang masipag!”

  51. Jun Jun

  53. Ellen,

I think the following line by Jun is really UNCALLED for!:

“Pasalamat nga kayo at mahaba ang pesensya sa inyo ng Presidente kung kay Marcos yan matagal ka ng na salvaged.”

Is this how Gloria punggok’s supporters or (mafia-like) clan members treat Pinoys in Pinas who are anti-Gloria? The mere insinuation of violence even if only obliquely formulated, speaks volumes. Anyway, never mind… freedom to be moronic may not be in the Bill of Rights, but let’s allow this Gloria punggok supporter or alagad the right to exist here notwithstand the 750 people who have been “salvaged” and the spate of extra judicial killings by the armed goons of Gloria Punggok’s government and her magnanakaw na baby na asawang fatso!

Allow me to edit what Jose Pidal Jr said: Dapat sinabi nitong Jun na ito ay “Pasalamat nga si Gloria punggok at mahaba ang pesensya sa kanya ng taong bayan kung hindi matagal na ng siyang na salvage ng mga taong nagugutom.”

  55. Anna,

I actually posted that picture in some egroup.

Ellen, you may put this guy on moderation. Nonsense naman ang sinasabi e.

  56. Jun Jun

  59. Ooops, I should say please! Nonsense naman ang sinasabi Ellen, so please just put him on moderation para you can just delete any silly messages from this guy. Yup, Anna, he/she did not deny nor admit that he/she is an offspring of the punggok.

Sa totoo lang ang sarap i-analize ang sulat niyan katulad ng ginagawa namin sa pulis during investigation of cases, kaya lang waste of time. Batikos na lang ng batikos with facts obtained from more reliable sources, for I understand that despite the fact that a lot cannot even access this blog, Ellen is definitely being read, and Filipinos are learning from her and her fellow journalists who do not waste their time writing propaganda.

Gulat nga ako kasi my friends in the Japanese media have been asking me a lot of information about the Garci tape, etc. I’m trying to confirm this information, though.

Mga newsletters here for Filipinos binabayaran ng malaki for exclusives on the Punggok’s projects daw. Ang this is why I do not read most of these trash being distributed to Filipinos here. I get better news from other sources as a matter of fact.

Kaya gusto ko si Ellen kasi I know she writes only what is true!!! May God preserve you Ellen!

  60. Yuko,

Napatawa ako ng malakas na mabasa:

    “Spartan:

    Hahahahhahah!

  61. Alam mo Yuko,

Para sa akin, sige lang, tangapin ni Ellen ang mga iyan dahil, ok, first freedom of expression (given na iyan), second, mas mabuti ng magtataktak (I learned that word from Scalia) sila dito at ng malaman natin ang thoughts “live” from the confines of the cubicles of Gloria’s clan, di ba? And third, magiging boring and scenario pag walang contravida (hahaha!)

  62. Jun Jun

  66. Nelbar,

    “October 9th, 2006 at 10:11 am

What can one expect from Enrile? He turns his coat as often as he changes panties!

  74. Guys, and dolls,

We’re just having fun actually while we wait for more news regarding the second nuke testing daw.

Will keep you posted on this later.

  75. damole damole

My father in fact was an associate editor of a movie magazine prior to WWII.

That was why he did not approve of my taking up Journalism in college. Sabi niya, kumuha na lang daw ng ibang kurso, and then make writing a hobby para hindi makurakot. Wise advice as a matter of fact.

As for pinapansin ang mga ungas. No way. Sabi nga, “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” Kinakapalan pa ng make-up. Presto! Mukhang pindangga!

  80. “Lalo na kay Anna imposible.” Hahahahah! Buti na lang!

    Hahaha!

Henken!

  82. Anna,

Whadya mean? Hermaprodite ang ungas na iyan?

Alam mo dito sa Japan, may association ng mga ipinanganak na dalawa ang ari at may special law na ngayon na puede na nilang i-correct ang kanilang mga defect according to their personal inclination. Kaya siguro minsan lalaki, minsan babae ang a.k.a. ng ungas! 😛

GM, Renault-Nissan alliance talks off  —-Yahoo!® News

By SARAH KARUSH, Associated Press Writer

Thu Oct 5, 1:18 AM ET

DETROIT – General Motors has called off discussions with Renault and Nissan on creating a grand automaking alliance that proponents argued would have created significant savings but critics said could have been a dangerous distraction from GM’s turnaround.

General Motors Corp., Renault SA and Nissan Motor Co. discussed the idea for nearly three months. But they said Wednesday that talks ended after Renault and Nissan declined to pay a premium for reaping what GM said would have been a disproportionate share of the benefits.

France’s Renault and Japan’s Nissan also wanted to acquire a significant stake in GM — an idea the U.S. company was not enthusiastic about, particularly without payment of some kind of premium. GM also said the structure that Renault-Nissan advocated would have kept it from forming joint ventures with other companies.

Renault-Nissan said compensation would go against “the spirit of any successful alliance.”

The companies have not given details about the size of the proposed premium or the stake Renault-Nissan wanted.

The idea to join the alliance was backed by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, who owns a 9.9 percent stake in GM. It fueled speculation that Kerkorian was dissatisfied with Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner and hoped to replace him with Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, who is widely admired for leading a turnaround at the Japanese company. Wall Street responded positively to the idea of a linkup, but many industry observers said a complicated alliance could distract GM from its own turnaround efforts.

GM shares fell 9 cents Wednesday to close at $33.32 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The world’s largest automaker lost more than $10.6 billion last year and has been steadily losing market share to Asian rivals. But last quarter, if not for restructuring charges, the company would have logged a hefty profit — proof, management says, that the turnaround is working.

“We felt that the complexities of working with three companies could slow us down,” Wagoner said.

The announcement came a week after Wagoner and Ghosn met face to face in Paris.

After the meeting, GM officials expressed some skepticism about the proposed alliance. Kerkorian then turned up the heat by announcing he might increase his stake in the company and calling for an evaluation of the alliance idea by independent advisers.

Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corp. said Wednesday that it was disappointed.

“We believe that General Motors’ participation in a global alliance with Renault and Nissan would have enabled GM to realize substantial synergies and cost savings,” Tracinda spokeswoman Carrie Bloom said in a statement. “We regret that the board did not obtain its own independent evaluation of the alliance.”

But Wagoner stressed that the board voted unanimously to end the talks. Tracinda is represented on the board by Jerome York.

Wagoner also said the board sought outside financial advice on the proposal, but he declined to say whether he believed that satisfied Kerkorian’s demand for an independent analysis.

Wagoner said all three companies agreed that the benefits were weighted in favor of Renault-Nissan, and particularly in favor of Nissan.

Dominique Thormann, senior vice president for administration and finance at Nissan North America, said all the companies stood to gain, though he acknowledged that “it didn’t exactly land 50-50.”

But he said compensation would defeat the purpose of an alliance.

“Let’s say you and I decide to do something together and the benefit is $3 to you and $1 to me,” Thormann said in a telephone interview Wednesday evening. “I’m still a dollar better off if I hadn’t done it with you; you’re $3 better off because you did something with me. Now why would I ask you for a dollar so that we’d be $2 even? … Where would be the motivation?”

He added that quantifying the exact worth of the alliance to each company would be impossible.

Thormann said having each company hold a significant stake in the other companies — as the Renault-Nissan alliance is structured — was important in order to “cement” the relationship and ensure that each partner has an interest in the success of the others.

Wagoner declined to term the board’s decision a personal victory or a referendum on his leadership.

“We just keep it simple,” he said. “We’re just, everyday, making the decisions that are right for the business.”

Renault-Nissan won’t be distracted by failed tie-up -—Reuters

    By Harry Suhartono

JAKARTA (Reuters) – Renault-Nissan will stick to its existing strategy after tie-up talks with General Motors ended and sees no market other than North America for a possible alliance, the group’s head Carlos Ghosn told Reuters on Wednesday.

Ghosn, head of both Renault SA and Japan’s Nissan Motor Co. , said he had no plans to talk to the chairman of Ford Motor Co, Bill Ford Jr, about a possible alliance and had not talked to him since the breakdown of talks with GM.

“For the moment I’m not looking for anything. We have clear strategies at Nissan, clear strategies at Renault. We are going to pursue this strategy, we’re going to make sure that we are delivering the commitments made, period,” Ghosn said.

After the breakdown in talks with GM there has been speculation over a potential alliance with Ford, where Bill Ford Jr. has acknowledged he had tried to hire Ghosn, who is highly regarded for his success in turning around Nissan.

Earlier Ghosn told reporters that the group would not take the initiative in discussions over an alliance with U.S. firms.

“I want to make it very clear we are not taking any initiative,” he said, referring to merger talks.

Motivating Renault/Nissan, analysts say, is the long-term threat posed by Toyota Motor Corp., which plans to boost its global vehicle sales to 9.8 million in 2008, setting it on course to overtake GM as the world’s biggest auto maker.

But it is unclear if Ford would be interested in an alliance. Last month, Ford said it would slash $5 billion in costs and cut one-third of its workforce, while warning that its auto business might not make a profit for the next three years.

    LOWER FUEL PRICES

Although there have been media reports that Bill Ford Jr. approached Ghosn in August to talk about possible cooperation, Ford last month named Alan Mulally, a former Boeing Co. executive, as its new CEO.

Ghosn said he saw no impact from lower gasoline prices on its key non-truck models in the United States, such as the Altima, Sentra and Infiniti G35, which combined account for about two-thirds of Nissan’s U.S. sales.

But he said it was unclear what the impact of lower fuel prices would be on U.S. sales of large pickup trucks and SUVs.

“It’s too early to see … the signs are not clear enough.”

Ghosn was in Indonesia to unveil a new Nissan model, a seven-seater MPV (van) called the Livina, which will compete with Toyota’s Kijang Innova, one of the most popular models in the southeast Asian country.

The Livina will be commercially available in Indonesia in the first half of 2007 after its global debut in China.

“The heart of the market in Indonesia is those (vehicles) between $10,000 and $20,000, unless you can make a strong offer in this (range) you are always going to be a niche player,” he said, adding the firm planned more lines in this segment.

The Franco-Japanese auto group and GM broke off talks last week over a GM demand for compensation for joining an alliance, although Nissan said it was still interested in a U.S. partner.

The discussions were brokered by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, who holds a 9.9 percent stake in GM and whose representative, Jerry York, joined the GM board in February but left after the talks broke down.

  93. Additional information on the Nokor’s Nuke Testing. Frankly, I thought they should have done this sanction long before when they found out the truth about the number of Japanese nationals being kidnapped for the perversions of the Kims:

Japan on alert, decides on additional sanctions against N. Korea
    TOKYO, Oct. 11 KYODO
Japan decided Wednesday to slap additional economic sanctions on North Korea, including a total ban on North Korean ships’ entry into Japanese ports, with the nation remaining on high alert over speculation that Pyongyang may conduct a second nuclear test.
The measures, also including limiting imports from North Korea, were worked out in a meeting of Cabinet ministers concerned and are to be made formal through a meeting of the Security Council of Japan later Wednesday and a full Cabinet meeting on Friday, government sources said.
Japan, which currently bans the cargo-passenger ferry Mangyongbong-92, from making port calls to Japan, is expected to order North Korean ships now anchoring in Japan to leave.
Japan has already imposed sanctions on North Korea for the missile test-firings, effectively prohibiting remittances from Japan to 15 entities suspected of having links with weapons of mass destruction programs and banning a port call by the ferry, the only direct passenger link between the two countries.
The total value of Japan’s exports to and imports from North Korea came to 21.2 billion yen in 2005, accounting for a meager portion of Japan’s overall two-way trade, worth 123 trillion yen.
Japan mainly imports seafood, including shellfish and crabs, coal and matsutake mushrooms from the country.
Earlier on Wednesday, Japanese government officials scrambled to verify ”unconfirmed information” that North Korea may conduct another nuclear test on the day, following the one it claimed to have carried out Monday.
North Korea said Monday it had successfully carried out its first-ever underground nuclear test. The Japanese government has yet to confirm whether that test really took place.
”At the moment, we have no concrete signs, such as abnormality in seismic waves, and are continuing to try to confirm, with extreme caution,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki said at a news conference concerning the reports of a second test.
Foreign Minister Taro Aso told a House of Councillors Budget Committee session, ”We are aware of information that it may be conducted during today, but no confirmation has been obtained.”
Shiozaki, when asked if there was any ”pressing information” of a second nuclear test, said, ”We have not found such information.”
The United States has no confirmation of a second test, White House spokesman Blair Jones was quoted by Reuters as saying.
South Korea’s presidential office also denied the report of another North Korean nuclear test, Yonhap News Agency said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said it detected no seismic waves coming from the direction of northern North Korea in the period from 5 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The Defense Agency held a meeting of its task force on the matter which agreed that no information so far suggests that North Korea carried out a nuclear test Wednesday.
Meanwhile, midair dust collected by Japanese Self-Defense Forces aircraft following North Korea’s claimed underground nuclear test Monday contained no radioactive materials, a government liaison conference dealing with radioactive issues said.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said seismic activities monitored in northeastern North Korea on Monday bore many differences to a natural earthquake that occurred in the country four years ago.
Shiozaki, Japan’s top government spokesman, on Wednesday urged North Korea to promptly return to six-way nuclear talks without preconditions and to honor a 2002 bilateral pact in which Pyongyang promised to maintain a moratorium on missile launches and strengthen the peace and stability of Northeast Asia.
Shiozaki’s remarks came in response to words from North Korea’s No. 2 leader Kim Yong Nam that whether the North will conduct more nuclear tests would depend on how the United States treats the country and that North Korea regards the 2002 Pyongyang Declaration as still valid.
”(Japan has) condemned very strongly the (North’s) missile launches in July as well as the nuclear announcement this time as behavior that violates the declaration,” Shiozaki said. ”I hope (North Korea) will do as stipulated in the declaration. It is important for it to fulfill each (promise) in the declaration.”
The stalled six-party talks involve the two Koreas, China, the United States, Japan and Russia. Shiozaki said all the participants want North Korea to return to the table soon.
Kim made his comments in an interview with Kyodo News in Pyongyang earlier Wednesday.
It was reported to the meeting that no abnormality has been detected by Air Self-Defense Force T-4 trainer jets that were sent to check radioactivity levels by collecting dust samples in the air over the Sea of Japan and other areas.
The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — plus Japan are holding consultations on a resolution calling for punitive measures against North Korea because of the nuclear test it claimed to have carried out Monday.
On Tuesday, China for the first time expressed readiness to agree to some sanctions against North Korea, its longtime ally.

  94. Ellen,

According to The Times, the North Korea’s Foreign Ministry announced that “”If the US keeps pestering us and increases pressure, we will regard as a declaration of war and will take a series of physical corresponding measures.”

What those “physical” measures are we don’t exactly know but we have an idea more or less – that they will attack South Korea and engage both South Korean and American forces in a dangerous, bloody combat which is bound to leave massive collateral damages on both sides of the Korean peninsula.

However, if we want to believe that the North Koreans are not all madmen, we must trust some of what they are saying, “Even though we conducted the nuclear test because of the US, we still remain committed to realizing the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula through dialogue and negotiations.”

They are saying that in reality, they want to sit down with the US and conduct a constructive dialogue!

President Richard Nixon a rabid anti-Communist, a Mao “hater”, became an American icon and hero, well at least till the Watergate Scandal broke, when he broke into hermit China through diplomatic doors to meet with Mao Tse Tung dubbed by Nixon himself as “The week that changed the world.”

Perhaps, Dubya, generally known today as the mad man in the White House, can replicate the act… Then the Republicans in Washington will cut a monument to his “greatness” if he manages to see what really makes Kim Jong II tick.

Don’t laugh people – because I mean it and I don’t care whether they erect monuments in Dubya’s honor by the dozen in America if it would help limit the number of madmen who could press that nuclear trigger!

  95. Chabeli Chabeli

Anna de Brux, I agree with your comments. The last thing this world needs is a MAD MAN with his finger on the button!

  96. Chabeli, Yes, like you I do think we certainly can do without KIM pressing his finger on that nuclear button.

Anyway, if Condi could pull a diplomatic stunt (meet with her North Korean counterpart), who knows, for all we know, Kim probably just wants food and medicine for his people whom he’s starved to be able to build his bomb!

Anyway, I reckon, the little man in Pyongyang is really afraid of being attacked and as we all know, even very frightened dogs tend to be made and to bite back when cornered.

  97. Perhaps, we could all learn a thing or two from Arthur Wellesley who became Duke Wellington after his stint in India.

(Frankly, I don’t like the fellow, humbug and all but boy, he was one good soldier-diplomat-statesman during his time. There are things that he said that are very useful in this kind of situation.)

  98. I like Malaya’s editorial on the stupidity of the Ale Boba re Nokor nuke test. Nobody is even listening to her, not even perhaps those who clap at every line of her silly pronouncements. Second time around as a matter of fact. Hindi na nadala. Ang hilig lang ngumawa, wala namang ibubuga.

People who have relatives in South Korea should better advise them to get prepared to pay for their fare back to the Philippines, and where to in case of an attack. They should not depend on the humbug who calls herself president. No money to haul them even in a cargo plane just in case kasi ninakaw na.

  99. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile is a typical traditional politician. He survives from Marcos’ era to Pandak’ bogus regime. Of course, balimbingan is the name of the game to protect his business interests.

anna de brux said:” What can one expect from Enrile? He turns his coat as often as he changes panties!”

Bakit magkabarkada ba sina Manang Ernie Maceda at Rambo Enrile? Silk panties for Manong Johnnny !

  100. npongco npongco

In addition Diego, after ousting Marcos, Mang Juan now went to Ilocos to apologize to the manong and manangs of the Marcos loyalists. But, I heard he and Imelda still don’t see eye to eye. Their feud started way back during the Marcos regime. Enrile is a goner. It’s already a waste of time to even talk about this old shit.

  101. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile cannot make it to Magic 12 without the so-called Solid North bloc support. He needs to kiss-ass with the Marcoses because the late Apo Ferdie is still respected leader in Ilocandia.

  102. vic vic

So meaning he just have to pinch his nose and hold his breath for he has to kiss lot a asses now to make it next time. Poor, Rich Old Man..

  103. As of this writing, Japan has started imposing sanction on the North Koreans with the revoking of permit to North Korean ships to enter Japan.

South Korea is stopping aid to Nokor likewise. China is also imposing some restrictions on the North Koreans, who must be becoming now a threat/pest to the Chinese. The nuke test in fact was conducted near the Chinese border according to announcements from NoKor.

Meanwhile, Okinawans are protesting against the firing of missiles from the US base in Okinawa. In case of a Nokor retaliation, the areas likely to be targetted by Kim’s soldiers will be the US bases in especially in Okinawa.

Ang tapang ni Kim! He’s threatening to bomb the US if Bush will not talk to him. I wish he would send the same warning to the No.1 Provocateur in the Philippines!

  104. They tested Taepondong 2 last July 5, 2006 but 7 of its missiles missed that included 1 long range capable of hitting the US West Coast.

Reports say that Taepondong 2 wasn’t capable of carrying a war head THEN!!!!.

I wonder it was the Taepondong 2 which they tested two days ago and whether they are preparing a second test blast to confirm range accuracy.

I said in my blog that Bush must make a 180° turn in terms of attitude and should agree to meet with the North Koreans – Condi must shuttle (Albright had done it during Clinton’s time.)

If the Washington-Pyongyang ping pong continues, I’m afraid, its Japan and South Korea which will be engaged in close combat with North Korea – there will be massive collateral damages on all sides.

I think Bush is already considering a countdown (Cheney, Rumsefeld and the generals will already have prepared a 0 countdown scenario) in case Kim doesn’t back down.

    Totally insane!

  105. Anna,

I’m about to sleep now when I saw on TV the face of Bush. He talking of military action against NoKor. My God, this warmonger must be really nuts about war!!! 🙁

  106. We are not talking here of 665,000 deaths (Iraq’s death toll to date) but millions if those missiles start firing!

following the hardening of Nokor position, I have a suspicion that Bush may already be contemplating a nuclear bomb on Pyongyang (to be first to the draw) but he shouldn’t even contemplate it because the world would never forgive him and there would be no rest for America if he pushed that button. (Billions of people around the world would be genuinely angry!)

Cooler head must prevail. Better to have some machine gun fire across the borders than these missiles.

Perhaps, that’s why Japan and China acted swiftly in the hope of preventing Bush from adopting a hard and potentially irrevocable stand.

They are aware they are dealing with two mad men somehow. One who would be prepared to nuke South Korea as well as hit Japan without flinching if he’s continually pestered while the other would think of SELF PRESERVATION before any other consideration, eg, Japan, South Korea, etc. hence would attack with the full force of his arsenal.

Insane! We call this “dialogue des sourds!” (Dialogue between deaf people.)

  107. I don’t even want to watch TV, Yuko because I know I’ll freak out so I just go on my comp and make my assessment from info on the net.

  108. I sincerely hope, Yuko that Kim BACKS DOWN!

The Japanese and the South Koreans must exert diplomatic pressure on Washington to hold fire (at least for Bush to stop firing his saliva for the moment!) The Japanese and the South Koreans must have some kind of ambassadeurs itinerrants to North Korea to prevail on some North Korean general that Kim is on a suicide route … Bush has a far bigger arsenal and Kim (no guarantee) will not be able to hit or damage the US in spite of his Pyongyang’s 6 nuclear weapons in its arsenal.

The US will make mince meat of Pyongyang (after Kim has pummemmeled some parts of Japan and SoKor.

    Insane!

  109. TongueInAnew TongueInAnew

Anna, I have this top secret info that Kim actually has a missile he personally wrote “Dear Gloria” on. It’s called Taepondong 4-11-1/2. (Tae: Pondo Ni Gloria, yung 4’11-1/2″ height ni Bansot.)

  110. She is not 4’11” and a half. She is only 4’9″. Whatever, the mad man of the White House is at it again trying to be bitchy and changing everybody’s mood to being divided unlike the initial united stand versus Kim’s nuke testing. Worse scenario is when this mad man tells Japan to build up militarily and forcing it to change its present stance of no armament according to the present Constitution by letting the North Korean fire a nuke across the Japan Sea. Gosh, I hate to see that day!

  111. Oops, this should be in this loop:

    Anna,

Just before I went to sleep (I’m going back to sleep shortly), I saw the breaking news on the helicopter that crashed into a high-rise apartment in Manhattan that is errily reminiscent of 9/11.

Imagine what is going to happen when Kim makes true his threat. Heaven forbid!

  112. Read this column of Lito Banayo in today’s Malaya. It’s witty and funny:

    Gloria goes on ‘warpath’

The Doña condemned Kim Jong Il’s nuclear adventurism in strong words. Kim should shake in his boots. “Qng leon, qng tigre, ecu tatacut, qng Kim pa?” the petite lady who rules the “strong” republic in the middle of the South China Sea must have been muttering under her breath, the better to impress Dubya, or Abe, or Jiang.

Why, she swore even that “her” republic would take “an active role” in stopping the “rogue state”, whose warheads if used would place her benighted land “within striking distance”.

She just might resurrect the PEFTOK and send her favorite Jovito Palparan, still jobless after retiring a month ago, to command “her” expeditionary force to cross the Diamond Mountains and attack Pyongyang. They will ride our one and only C-130, appropriately vintage Vietnam, newer by twenty years compared to what Douglas MacArthur sent to the Korean Peninsula before Truman sacked him. To assist Palparan will be “propaganda” expert Victor Corpus, who would certainly outwit Kim’s intelligence officers. She would also enlist the services of her certified Matahari, Rosebud Ong Gaba, who was cozily chatting with the Doña, holding hands even, in Clark on the occasion of her papa Dadong’s birth anniversary, just as Milenyo’s winds were howling south of the Angeles parallel.

Palparan, who hates communists more than he hates the devil itself, would be the perfect match to the bemedalled generals of the short, pudgy North Korean leader. And when her big brother Dubya finally conquers the hermit kingdom with her invaluable help, the Doña will assist in its “democratization.” She will lend them the expertise of Virgilio Garcillano, who shall “educate” the North Koreans on the intricacies of the electoral process. The political successors of Kim Jong Il would be “elected” using outsourced ballots, electoral returns and certificates of canvass printed by Wynsum Printers, Ernest Printing and the rest of the “Friends of Benjamin Abalos”.

Wow! The Dona’s Philippines will export not only brains and systems, but even election paraphernalia. Maybe Abalos and his cohorts could recycle the South Korean-made counting machines now rotting in their bodegas and get the North Koreans to use these in their first-ever electoral exercise. Wouldn’t that be dandy? Sumalipao and Icaro, Pobe and Macarambon, Paz and all those Comelec characters in Hello Garci would become highly-paid “consultants”. OFW na sila!

And because years of economic isolation have taken its toll on North Korea’s agricultural production, the Doña’s Joc-Joc would volunteer to assist the rehabilitation of its moribund economy. Dubya would readily agree, and get Joc Joc out of freezing Kenosha and into even colder Pyongyang. Joc Joc would of course teach the Nokors the wonders of foliar fertilizers that would “quadruple” their harvest of soybeans in no time at all. And the beauty of it all is the profits from the liquid fertilizer will bankroll their elections!

To teach her new-found Korean cousins the bedrock principles of “rule of law,” the Doña would send Raul Gonzales plus his best friend, Merceditas the Merciless and they will take along that “brilliant” prosecution team which Nicole accuses of selling her out to the Yankees. She could also send Ric Abcede and Jesus Santos, lawyers na, spokesmen pa. No, not Toting Bunye, or Mike Defensor, they cannot acclimatize outside the stinking palace beside the stinking river.

Just you wait, Kim! You’ve crossed our Doña, and now she’s on the warpath.

    ***

And if, huwag naman sana, something happens to her first expeditionary force while they fight the bitter Korean winter, the Doña has plenty of reserves. There’s Vidal Querol, who still awaits the Doña’s marching orders after he was retired more than a month ago, and has run out of poems to recite. And not to forget, Generoso Senga, her faithful CSAFP, retired three months ago but still without a “civilian” appointment.

She could also send compadre “Bong” to teach the Nokors the wonders of “jueteng”. Oh, that would make a lot of kabos and kubradores happy. Bagong bayani na rin sila! Of course pareng Bong would need gaming supervisors. General Mosqueda would be perfect. And alalays like Richard Garcia and Abe Riva. One happy family!

Don’t laugh. She’s hallucinated over this kind of scenario years before. Remember that when Dubya sent young Americans to Iraq, it was the Doña who first volunteered her help, and committed an expeditionary force of less than 200 “peace-keepers”. She even dispatched Nono de Ibazeta, named him her new envoy extraordinaire and plenipotentiary right after Saddam fell. She and her spokesmen drooled over fat reconstruction and rehabilitation contracts, with Filipino “bagong bayani” all over the place. Nono never got to present his credentials beyond Amman.

Then her cabalen Angelo de la Cruz was kidnapped by some rogue Iraqis, and her “bleeding heart” got the better of her “iron resolve”. Nerves of steel suddenly became spaghetti strands. But that’s no problem. All Norbert, the other Gonzales, has to do is make sure there are no cabalens in her expeditionary force. Palparan is Bisaya, Corpus is Ilokano, Rosebud could even pass for a Korean herself. Garcillano is Ilokano turned Higaonon turned Muslim even, and all his operators are from Mindanao, with the exception of Icaro, who is Batangueno. Joc Joc, her agricultural wizard, comes from Capiz. Even Querol is no Pampango. He is from Pangasinan, and Senga is from Bayani Fernando’s Calumpang. Mosqueda is Ilonggo. That just might rule out Bong, not only a cabalen, but from Lubao even. No problem either. How about Chavit?

  113. Hahahahaha! Speaking of Korean Winter, grabe daw doon parang sa Siberia. Iyong ihi lumalabas na icycle!!! Dkyan sila ngayon maninigas! 😛

  114. nelbar nelbar

    Ellen,

No delivery system for North Korean Nukes?
Wretchard of the Belmont Club speculates that since the Nokor bomb was SUB-KILOTON (less than 1000 tons of TNT equivalent) maybe they were testing a SUITCASE BOMB.

    Hehe…delivery system could PAL …

  116. Ellen,

A Filipino doctor, a fellow UPian, in the US sent this to me:

    WHO IS IT ????

Gloria Arroyo visits the Queen Elizabeth of England. She asks her,

“Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you can give me?”

“Well,” says the Queen, “the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people.”

Arroyo frowns. “But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?”

The Queen takes a sip of tea. “Oh, that’s easy. You just ask them to answer an intelligence riddle.”

The Queen pushes a button on her intercom. “Please send The Prime Minister in here, would you?”

Tony Blair walks into the room. “Your Majesty…”

The Queen smiles. “Answer me this, please, Tony. Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister.

    Who is it?”

Without pausing for a moment, Blair answers, “That would be me!”

“Yes! Very good!” says the Queen.

Back in Manila, Arroyo calls in her Executive Secretary, Ed Ermita and says, “Ed, answer this for me.”

“Your mother and your father have a child. It’s not your brother and it’s not your sister. Who is it?”

“I’m not sure,” says the executive secretary. “Let me get back to you on that one.”

The executive secretary goes to his advisers and cabinet members and asks every one, but none can give him an answer. Finally, he ends up in the men’s room and recognizes a media man in the next stall.

Ermita shouts, “Hey Anthony Taberna! Can you answer this for me?

Your mother and father have a child and it’s not your brother or your sister. Who is it?”

The media man yells back, “That’s easy. It’s me!”

    Ermita smiles. “Thanks!”

Ermita goes back to the Oval Office and asks to speak with Arroyo.

Says, “I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It’s Anthony Taberna.”

Arroyo gets up, stomps over to Ermita, and angrily yells into his face, “No, you idiot! It’s Tony Blair!”

    According to Daily Telegraph:

‘The biggest threat to Australia from North Korea’s test is not that it may be able to target one of our cities with a nuclear warhead but that it may be in a position to sell a nuclear device to terrorists.’
‘Given that North Korea’s economy relies on a vast network of criminal activity involving drugs, counterfeiting everything from cash to passports, kidnapping and illegal weapons sales, the threat is very real.’

Once in the hands of terrorists, the threat of nuclear bombing becomes global. The movie ‘Peacemaker’ comes to mind. Somehow the terrorist was able to remove the small bomb inside the bigger container (warhead). Putting it on his backpack, he brought it to NY UN Headquarters Bdg to detonate it, but of course, the ‘bidas’ foiled him.

Why worry about Nokor’s selling nuke device to others? Isn’t the US doing the same? She has long been selling and supplying her allies like Israel. Why is it okay for US and other countries and not Nokor? And once again, define terrorist. Isn’t the US the number one terrorist in the world?

Russia Views U.S. “Mini-Nuke” Research as Threat, Experts Say

    By Mike Nartker
    Global Security Newswire

MOSCOW — U.S. efforts to expand research into new, miniature nuclear weapons could lead Russia to begin contemplating similar efforts, Russian nuclear nonproliferation experts told Global Security Newswire here yesterday (see GSN, April 25, 2003).

Last year, the Bush administration persuaded Congress to overturn a U.S. ban on the research of miniature nuclear weapons, which are defined as having a yield of less than five kilotons. The administration indicated that such weapons, if developed, would be used against terrorists and stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction in hardened bunkers.

Russia, however, views the efforts to research and develop new nuclear weapons as a threat, said Vladimir Novikov of Russia’s Institute for Strategic Studies. New nuclear arms could lower the overall threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, Novikov said, echoing the concerns of opponents of new nuclear weapons research in the United States. He also said that the question of who would control the use of miniature nuclear weapons — be it the president, the National Security Council, or high-ranking generals in the field — was still unresolved.

In addition, Novikov said that the Bush administration’s rationale of potentially using miniature nuclear weapons against terrorists was “not understandable.” The international community would see such an action, for example against terrorists in the mountains of Afghanistan, more as an attack against another country and the beginning of a nuclear war, he said.

Sergei Mikhaliov of the institute questioned how the United States would have reacted if the Soviet Union had decided to use nuclear weapons during its own conflict in Afghanistan during the 1980s.

While Russia currently lacks the economic capability to begin similar nuclear weapons research, the experts said, the situation could change as the country’s economy continues to grow. If U.S. efforts move beyond the “theoretical” into “practical research,” then Russia might be forced to act, Mikhaliov said, adding that any actual U.S. tests of miniature nuclear weapons would be seen in Russia as a “signal” to begin serious consideration of its own nuclear weapons research.

The research of miniature nuclear weapons, Novikov said, “is not a difficult question” for Russian scientists (see GSN, Aug. 18, 2003).

United States: U.S. “Bunker Buster” Development Worries Russia

    By David McGlinchey

    Global Security Newswire

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Russia is concerned about U.S. efforts to develop low-yield nuclear weapons for destroying deeply buried targets, a top Russian nuclear official said yesterday (see GSN, March 7).

In 1994 the U.S. Congress banned research and development on nuclear weapons with yields below five kilotons, but the U.S. Defense Department has asked lawmakers to lift the ban.

“Where did this talk come from to do away with the five-kiloton threshold?” asked Nikolai Voloshin, the head of the Department of Nuclear Ammunition Development and Testing at the Russian Atomic Energy Ministry.

“The idea is being circulated to do lower yield charges, I question the thoughts of using such low-yield weapons, which means that nuclear weapons cease to be a deterrent and become combat weapons,” he told Global Security Newswire at an international security conference here organized by the Energy Department’s Sandia National Laboratories.

Earlier this year, in a draft of the fiscal 2004 Defense Department budget request, Pentagon officials told Congress the ban must be repealed to “train the next generation of nuclear weapons scientists and engineers.”

The Pentagon needs a “revitalized nuclear weapons advanced concepts effort,” but the ban has had a “chilling effect” on any such initiative “by impeding the ability of our scientists and engineers to explore the full range of technical options,” according to the draft request.

Developing the new weapons would not be exceptionally difficult, according to Voloshin. He questioned U.S. motives in publicizing the debate on potential new nuclear weapons.

“No one denies it can be easily done, why bring all the hype about it?” he asked.

He also criticized the U.S. approach to international arms control agreements, specifically the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which the Bush administration does not support.

“We are very concerned about why the U.S. has not yet ratified the CTBT,” Voloshin said.

    Pentagon Wants Mini-Nuke Ban Ended

Congress asked to permit US to develop ‘more usable’ bombs

    by Julian Borger in Washington

The Pentagon has asked the US Congress to lift a 10-year ban on the development of small nuclear warheads, or “mini-nukes”, in one of the most overt steps President George Bush’s administration has taken towards building a new atomic arsenal.

Buried in the defense department’s 2004 budget proposals, sent to congressional committees this week, was a single-line statement that marks a sharp change in US nuclear policy.

    npongco;
Well, your comment appears to be confrontational and i do not intend to react with you the same way. If you do not want to worry, i do not care. All i did was quote what i have read which to me relates to the issue of this thread. In today’s term, ‘terrorist’ refers to those that are ready to die just so be able to inflict harm to others. Gone are the days when you call a teacher a ‘terror’ bec it can connote terrorism and you will surely be misunderstood = like in a terror teacher to be a terrorist.

  126. Kitamo,

Re: “Once in the hands of terrorists, the threat of nuclear bombing becomes global.”

That’s my opinion too. I believe the real danger we face today is not a direct or immediate threat from North Korea but more from terrorists, fanatics, fundamentalist groups outside the nation state who are prepared to run a protracted ASSYMETRIC warfare (just like what’s happening in Baghdad, Kabul, Palestine, etc.) in order to get hold of THE BOMB (A or N) and use it against western civilization.

And the worst danger is that they may obtain this holocaustic weapon from individuals, people or even officials coming from nuclear weapons possesing nations who will have NO scruples about selling them to the highest bidder.

  127. nelbar nelbar

    anna,

it reminds me of the movie The Sum of All Fears

  128. Terrorists, especially if they are just members of some splinter groups, cannot do much, Anna, without the help of some government like the kind of help for instance Nur Misuari got from Khaddafi.

The North Koreans may not be that dangerous as they may just be bluffing. People there are actually starving and without Japan or South Korea to supply food for them, they will go poof. Problem is they might try to commit suicide and want the whole world to go down to hell with them with their nukes. How many they have made so far is unknown. If they have the same amount of ammunition in the US and Russian arsenal, patay na! Katapusan na ng mundo!

We’ll see what happens. Meanwhile, we’re trying to get ready with our 72-hour emergency kits. I’m adding another box of food supply just in case. I know our local government offices are trying to replenish and fill up warehouses where they keep these emergency relief goods.

  129. BTW, what’s happened now to Nur Misuari? Sayang ang taong iyan. Matalino pa naman. He was a scholar at the UP Asian Center as a matter of fact when I was student there. He’s actually an acquaintance as his sister-in-law in fact was a classmate of mine.

  130. Al Qaeda has become more than just a splinter group.

It is operating within several governments in a manner of speaking. Their operatives run assymetric warfare in their own “methodical” fashion. In that sense, they have the implicit backing of some nation states.

  131. Nelbar,

I can’t remember “The Sum of All Fears” anymore (am not a movie buff) but was that a Harrison Ford film?

  132. You’re right Nelbar!

since the time of marcos, all philippine presidents have hired US lobbyists just to portray good image of their respective administration and have spent hundreds of millions of dollars coming from the government coffers that, if spent to generate jobs would have helped a lot of our starving countrymen. this was a clear waste of taxpayers’ money that should have been allotted to infrastructures, instead. and still, the arroyo administration, said to be the most in corruption as in “pinakatalamak” (as some were perpetrated right in the face of our own people) continues to run after these predators so as not to be stricken out from the US’ list of beneficiaries. but are we really get help, anyway? if so, where (or whom) does this donation goes?

(what we need is an upright, good leader, a patriot whose love for country overrides his greed for money and power. we need leaders whose values are grounded, not necessarily from organized religion, but from basic ideas of truth and justice echoing from Christ and other mantra of world teachings. foremost, we need a HUMAN BEING WITH CONSCIENCE AND CLEAR ETHOS which define his/her actions, decisions and vision. WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE ARE YOU? Isaiah predicted the end of the world, and all because of Israel! Funny, how people like the North Koreans, who are not even familiar with the Bible and are now tying up with Iran and even Pakistan, where the terrorists are based (Moslem Fundamentalists, whose leaders come from Pakistan, Al Qaeda and the Talibans) would direct their hatred toward Israel via the USA, and how indeed Israel is making the prophecy to come to pass!

Isaiah is good reading as a matter of fact. Christ quoted a lot from him as a matter of fact.

  139. Heheh, Nelbar, I don’t know if during the medieval times, people who rebelled could be qualified as terrorists but yeah, every person who hasn’t reached the sublime title of Freedom Fighter like Nelson Mandela, perhaps may be branded a terrorist.

The Irish Republican Army (IRA), on the other hand, wreaked havoc not only on government institutions, armies, buildings, etc. They wreaked havoc MOSTLY on civilians, committed murder on their own Irish civilian compatriots, killed and maimed children, women, and other Irish folks, etc. that’s why it’s only right that they are branded terrorists.

However, they’ve all started to come back to the fold. And good on them too. But it ain’t really over till it’s over.

  140. Mrivera Mrivera

anna, kung ang mga muslim na taosug ang inyong makakaharap, 101% sisigurduhin ko sa inyo na hindi kayo gagalawin as long as you respect their beliefs, you do not abuse them, treat them as one not different from you and be what they expect you to be. if you are offered something, accept it dahil insulto sa kanila kapag tinanggihan mo at ituturing nilang hindi ka tapat sa pakikisama at pakikiharap sa kanila. i should have known dahil i spent almost half of my life with the taosugs and other muslim tribes. but they (the taosugs of sulu) are the most moderate muslims in our country unlike others who see and treat christian people and others as their enemies.

  141. Follow on comment on Northern Ireland.

The Irish in Northern Ireland have gone through plebscites and the result was that they prefer to stay in the Union.

Don’t ask me why because if it were up to the English, they could have their independence anytime.

Moreover, on the IRA: the Irish Republican Army which operated as a band of terrorists received huge support in terms of manpower and other logistics from individuals and people coming from an entirely independent and sovereign nation: Republic of Ireland.

Now, what I don’t understand is why these people who are not British should provide materiel and financial support to a group whose main objective was to sow chaos in a neigbour country. Perhaps, because they still feel bad about the potatoe famine but today is today. Today,’s terrorism will not help anybody’s cause.

  142. Mrivera,

    I believe you.

As I said, there is ultimately nothing wrong with fundamentalism provided it’s not stretched to fanaticism to include violence, hence ultimately, terrorists are born.

Pope Benedict is a Roman Catholic fundamentalist of sorts.

  143. And Mrivera, thanks for the tips on how to deal with the Tausogs. You realize that these cross-cultural tips help a great deal when you meet people who aren’t of the same culture. (I think in business schools, they now have courses on cross-cultural negotiations or something other.)

  144. Mrivera:

I have always believed the old adage, “Love begets love, hate begets hate.” I have at many times proved this to be true.

When I first went to UK to study there, I was actually worried about how the British would accept me worried that I would experienced the same thing we experienced in the US or even in the Philippines when we mentioned that we were part Japanese. Then, I remembered an advise from my Mom to just smile, and see the effect of such gesture on others.

And so I did. The response was just overwhelming as when the bobbies would greet me often with “Good morning! It’s a lovely day it is today, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, this does not hold true most of the time in the Philippines.

  145. Sorry, this should read: When I first went to UK to study there, I was actually worried about how the British would accept me worried that I would EXPERIENCE the same thing we experienced in the US or even in the Philippines when we mentioned that we were part Japanese.

  146. Thanks, Mrivera for the info on Nur. He was such a sweet, soft-spoken guy.

I translated and helped edit a documentary on the little children being sold to slavery in Luzon because the parents cannot till their lands because of the insurgency in Mindanao.

  147. Nelbar:

The Last Samurai is a Hollywood production. Interpretation ng mga kano kasama na diyan. If you want to know about ancient Japan, I suggest you watch those movies that I know are beamed over on cable TV even in the Philippines. O baka sa hotel lang siguro kasi nakapanood ako ng program ng NHK sa hotel sa Manila when I went there two years ago. Better still, makipagkaibigan ka sa mga hapon although I doubt if the young Japanese are as keen to know their country’s history.

  148. You’ll be surprised to know, Nelbar, that the French had established a penal colony in the USA similar to the British penal colony in Australia, and reason why French migration there was rather slow and they were outnumbered by the British and other Europeans, especially those seeking for more religious freedom like those pilgrims to the New World from Plymouth in England in 1620.

So, there was the over 100 years still paying homage to the English king before the migrants from all parts of Europe decided they wanted to form a union and be free from their kings, especially the more dominant King of England.

I have not been to the East Coast as a matter of fact, but I have been to Plymouth in Devonshire. It actually has the strongest ties with the USA, including the accent that is typical of the accent in MA and PA in the USA that is different to the elitist accent at Oxford.

  149. Also, Nelbar, there is a big difference between a terrorist and a rebel with a cause. Terrorist ang tawag ni Bush sa mga insurgents sa Iraq but they are people who have every right to protect and fight for their right to determine the fate of their country.

Except for the Al Qaeda, with whom a lot of the people I know in the movement against US invasion are not in favor and shun connection with, I don’t think that you and I have any right to call them “terrorists” or those rebels who fought for their freedom in ancient times when the ordinary people are owned by kings and queens!!!

You don’t call the Katipuneros for instance as terrorists evne when the Spaniards consider them as such. I definitely will not. My maternal grandfather was one of them as a matter of fact.

    ystakei,

offtopic: are you a nikkei-jin? just wonderin. can i email you? visited your blog and didn’t see any way to get to you.

mrivera, and others who put misuari for blog discussion,

As an idealist rebel, I came to admire him. I thought the 1996 peace agreement with the MNLF would stop the problem in Mindanao, esp. among the rebels. When he became the ARMM governor, things have changed, partly (or largely) because the govt didn’t fullfill its part of the deal. But Misuari didn’t come out with clean hands either. If reports are to believed, the ARMM under his admin became as corrupt, if not more so, since 1987 (e.g., govt share of the DepEd teachers’ salaries was not remitted to GSIS for years). The inside view of politics in ARMM, to many, is a microcosm of how dirty the political game in RP has become.

Your observation on the Tausug is well taken. They are basically a good people. That holds true among the other Muslim groups (Sama, Maranao, Maguindanao, etc.)

  151. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

    Should read:
When he became the ARMM governor, things have not changed,

  152. Yup, Hawaiian guy, I am a Nikkeijin and I am proud of it although as a child I could not understand why we had to be made responsible for something that we have nothing to do with.

And this is the reason why I am an anti-war activist, and many more. I am free to be that, you know as long as I know I am right and I can take responsibility for my actions.

At least, over here, our government knows how to respect our basic rights as quaranteed by our Constitution that has stood time because people here know how to abide by it even when at first they felt it was a slap on their faces. We still have the same Constitution passed soon after Japan’s defeat in WWII.

I guess, it’s in the nature of the people here to make things aesthetically beautiful because God has intended them to be so.

  153. Just an after-thought, Nelbar. Those people who wanted change in the Middle Ages were not called “terrorists.” They were called “Reformists”!

You should thank them in fact that people like John Wycliffe thought of defying the Pope by having the Scriptures available to you and me. The Inquisition sentenced him to die in fact. They did not catch him but he died anyway as a fugitive, but what did the universal church did then? When they found his grave, they had it dugged and exhumed his bones that were said to have been fed to the dogs!

Now, tell who are the terrorists? Those men of reason or those who order them dead?

  154. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

now I know what kind of person you are. the saying “a fish is caught by its mouth” seems correct, at least for you. my statement is a general one, and could be true (or even false) if applied to anyone in particular.

your statement simply betrays your racist attitude towards the japanese, including those who might be identified with them. you are quick to jump into a conclusion without knowing the facts first. what made you think i’m japanese? that all or most of them (“mga Hapon”)- as my reading of your statement goes – are mayabang? so what if I’m japanese?

kaya pala mainit ang dugo mo sa simula pa lang ng posting mo sa akin. if i appear mayabang, is that a valid reason to generalize it unto all (or most) japanese in hawaii? sorry to say, wrong premise. {hawaiianguy is a japanese, hawaiianguy is mayabang, ergo, all japanese are mayabang.)

but what makes the above syllogism FALSE right from the start is, that hawaiianguy is “pure-bloodied” filipino! his parents, and all his ancestors within living memory are “natives” of the Philippines. if he sounded “mayabang,” you are entitled to your own perception. but please, don’t make an inflammatory analysis that ranges people against each other, ok?

Lokohin niyong sarili ninyo.

” . . . why would North Korea bother with the Philippines?” Exactly my thought.

Still, ang point ko in another post, and I repeat here, is: kahit magkakampi sa isang topic (say, patalsikin si GMA), pagdating sa ibang topic nagbababag din.

“Manang Yuko” and anna de brux…just an observation on your current “balitaktakan” with this Jun…I’m not sure but, para kaming “nakakasaksi” ng bangayan sa pagitan ng mga “babae”, base sa palitan ninyo ng mga “pananalita”. Well, it’s obvious for us that ystakei and anna are both women…now, that leaves me to believe that Jun is not a “bakla”, ‘coz a gay person would think a “thousands” times before challenging the “feminity of a real woman”, kasi alam niya mismo na “tanging sa words” lang siya meron nuon, of course except if he would have those “hormone injections”. 😉

Which now lead me to “hypothesis”(parang nuong high scholl ah…hehehe) na itong si Jun ay isang…”EVA”! 😛

Did I “attack” your persona Jun? I was merely giving my “observations” on the way you three are doing “your arguments” on this forum, particularly on this “post”. Now, on the “contrary” it was you who said that “ako ang alanganin?”…that will show now, who is doing a “personal attack” to who, is it not?

Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! You even went as far as saying “wala ako masabi sa topic”? Let me ask you…what about you, what comments have you given out here since the time I saw your name “Jun” pop-in on this “forum site”? Japan’s Response to North Korea’s Underground Nuclear Test

    [International] October 11 , 2006

On October 9, North Korea performed an underground nuclear test, just as it had said it would. The next day, the House of Representatives responded by unanimously passing a resolution that condemned the nuclear experiment, and demanded that North Korea give up its nuclear arms and abandon its nuclear program. The House of Councillors did the same in its plenary meeting on October 11.

The resolutions strongly criticized North Korea’s nuclear test. “Whatever the reason, there is no way this action can be justified. It is a reckless outrage that absolutely cannot be tolerated.” They also called for North Korea to “immediately give up all nuclear weapons and abandon its nuclear program,” and urged a prompt and unconditional return to the six-party talks. This is the first time resolutions related to North Korea have been adopted by both houses of the Diet since the April 2002 resolutions calling for an early settlement of the issue of the suspected abductions of Japanese citizens.

In an October 9 press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuhisa Shiozaki issued an announcement echoing the prime minister’s critical comments with such phrases as “cannot tolerate,” and “the North Korean nuclear test is a grave challenge to the nuclear non-proliferation regime.” He noted that this was “an underground test and the amount of radiation emitted into the atmosphere is thought to be minimal with little effect on people or the environment,” and called on the Japanese people to remain calm.

On the afternoon of October 10 in Japan, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe referred to the North Korean announcement that it had conducted a nuclear test and emphatically reiterated, “If true, this is a challenge against the security and peace of our nation and of the whole region. It cannot be tolerated.” He indicated that he would push for international cooperation within the UN Security Council to implement sanctions under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, and said, “The issue, including the adoption of a resolution for strict sanctions, should be immediately discussed in the UN Security Council. I have already instructed the appropriate diplomatic channels in this regard.”

Meanwhile, on the morning of that same day (night of October 10 in Japan), the UN Security Council reopened its discussion of the US proposal for sanctions to be brought under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, which sets out how the UN Security Council may respond to threats to peace. Japan is chairing the Security Council this month and has indicated it will be adding its own sanction proposals (prohibition of entry to ports by cargo ships registered in North Korea; prohibition against the landing and takeoff of aircraft; banning of all North Korean imports; prohibition against the entry or passage of North Korean government officials; the establishment of a sanctions committee and the requirement to report; and prevailing upon the UN Secretary General to intervene for the continued peace and stability of the Korean peninsula and northeast Asia) to those of the United States (inspection of all ships entering and leaving North Korea; prohibition on the export of materials for weapons of mass destruction and the like; and the freezing of assets related to such illegal undertakings as counterfeiting).

Strong Criticism by the Major Newspapers
Most of the editorials in the October 11 editions of Japan’s major newspapers criticized North Korea’s nuclear test as a reckless act threatening the peace of the international community, and urged the UN Security Council to unite in applying strong pressure on North Korea.

The Yomiuri Shimbun editorial, “Safeguarding Japan in a ‘dangerous new era,’” said North Korea’s nuclear test was a “grave challenge by a rogue nation to the security of the international community.” The Yomiuri continued, “Japan, a country that is directly exposed to the nuclear threat posed by North Korea and the nation currently chairing the council, needs to do its utmost so the council can take stern concerted action. The Japanese government is said to have been studying the possibility of taking punitive measures against North Korea on its own, in addition to the ban on port calls by the North Korean passenger-cargo ferry Mangyongbong-92 and the financial sanctions that have already been implemented. Additional measures under consideration include a ban on port calls by all North Korean vessels, expanded restrictions on personal travel between Japan and North Korea, and a ban on imports of North Korean products. The government should carry out such measures without hesitation.” The Yomiuri noted, “The country that can wield the greatest influence on North Korea is, after all, China, the country that extends the largest amount of economic assistance to North Korea and its biggest trading partner. China also chairs the six-way talks. If China fails to take any effective countermeasures, including sanctions, the international community inevitably will be disappointed in it.” Again, under the sub-head, “China, S. Korea, Russia key,” the Yomiuri said, “We want the Abe administration to strongly urge China, South Korea and Russia to take concrete, concerted action to persuade North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions, from the viewpoint of protecting national security, the most important national interest. At this critical time, Abe’s diplomacy is being tested.”

The Mainichi Shimbun titled its editorial, “North Korea alienates the world,” and took note of the fact that the so-called nuclear test by North Korea appeared to be on a smaller scale than expected and that the United States was still investigating whether or not there had actually been a nuclear explosion. Still, the Mainichi warned, “the very fact that North Korea announced the test is in itself a major threat to the peace and stability of not only Northeast Asia, but of the world. The international community, including Japan, must consider how it will retaliate.” In particular, the Mainichi urged China and Russia, which have so far been reluctant to impose strict sanctions on North Korea, to “take appropriate action in keeping with their responsibility as permanent member countries of the UN Security Council.”

Under the heading, “N. Korea’s nuclear test: Pyongyang must return to the negotiating table,” the Asahi Shimbun asserted, “This is a nation that has committed acts of state terrorism, including the abduction of foreign nationals. It has repeatedly defied international rules. We suspect Pyongyang wanted to possess nuclear weapons so they could be used to blackmail the world into accommodating its every irrational whim and demand. By conducting its first nuclear test, North Korea has further isolated itself from the international community, challenged the United Nations and put global peace and security at grave risk. We cannot possibly condone this outrageous behavior.” It asked, “Why did North Korea go ahead with nuclear armament?” and concluded, “The Pyongyang leadership must have seen the fall of the non-nuclear Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein as a stark lesson of what could happen if it could not defend itself. Having been bested by South Korea in the ‘political system competition’ over economic buildup, North Korea probably chose to go nuclear as the only way to guarantee the survival of its dictatorial system.” Noting that “what is of crucial importance now is that the international community must act as one,” the Asahi expressed the hope that “the UN Security Council will carefully examine the practicability of the planned resolution before its content is finalized,” and said, “The ultimate goal is to make North Korea abandon its nuclear ambitions.” It stressed that Japan and South Korea, the United States and China, “must unite and work together.”

The Sankei Shimbun editorial, “It’s past time that such selfish arrogance can be condoned: China, South Korea, and Russia must change their stance,” warned, “The fact that a dictatorship like North Korea, which will stop at nothing to achieve its aims, has acquired a nuclear arsenal is a ‘grave threat to international peace,’ (the Japan-South Korea summit meeting). But this also means that there is now an even greater chance that weapons of mass destruction and their technology may be widely dispersed to other countries and terrorist groups.” The Sankei pointed out that the primary objectives of North Korea’s nuclear test are to “preserve Kim Jong-il’s dictatorial regime and lift the economic sanctions. North Korea may have decided that becoming a nuclear power, even if it is necessary to ignore the warnings of the international community to do so, will buttress its position and give it an advantage in negotiations.” Such “selfishness,” the Sankei asserted, “must not be condoned.” It urged the international community to apply pressure on North Korea by adopting a UN Security Council resolution with the coercive power allowed under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, and noted that this was essential for resumption of the six-party talks. At the same time, the Sankei said, “It is important that Japan strengthen its alliance with the United States even as it works in collaboration with China and South Korea.”

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) titled its editorial, “Harsh Sanctions Needed To Force North Korea To Give Up Nukes.” Like the other newspapers, the Nikkei denounced the test as a reckless act “carried out in defiance of a stern warning from the United Nations Security Council.” What is important, the Nikkei said, is “to pressure North Korea to return to the stalled six-nation talks on Pyongyang’s weapons programs and to abandon its nuclear ambitions.” It noted that to do this, “there is no realistic option other than to strengthen economic sanctions.” The Nikkei noted that a “revival of the Japan-US-South Korea solidarity that existed prior to the Roh Moo-hyun administration,” was essential in dealing with North Korea,” but under the sub-head, “Japan’s non-nuclear stance remains unchanged,” continued, “Nuclear armament would not be a wise choice for Japan. The prime minister’s sense of crisis is appropriate, and his reiteration in the Diet that Japan will adhere to its non-nuclear policy was meaningful in that it cleared a subtle misunderstanding. What is needed now is a concerted international effort to defuse the crisis and for the deterrent power of the Japan-US alliance to be strengthened.”

i am really glad i am in this blog and that ellen is broadminded enough to accept a lot and only once in a while interfering. this blog really make my life colorful, if only one can close one’s eyes on some of the insults. talking about races almost always ends up with some hate for one thing or another. talking about religion likewise.i once wrote here that i was not a bible reader but this is today.many years ago i was also an avid reader and joined in the “navigator”, a group concentrating on young people who are not sure of their belief.it helped me find out that after all i am a christian. actually it was very easy. if you believe that jesus died on the cross and went up to heaven on third day, then one is a christian. if you are not baptised yet then you can be baptised, for this is the holy ghost who should work on you.another thing we discussed quite much is hell. everybody seems to be afraid of this except some who think it is exciting to meet some film stars there. does hell exist? at that time there was also much discussion in the church about this.this is a very tricky question, because jesus paid already with his life for all our sins so that it seems to us young people why must others go to hell when all are sinners anyway. we went to several priests both lutheran and catholics and all are in the affirmative that there is hell.then there was this franciscan priest whom i will say holy was always thoughtful when he talk. he said, of course there is hell but there are no people there because god is love, and what kind of god are you talking about if he will send his children to hell. religion is all about belief. those who quote from the bible to bolster their arguments must also think that not everything there is the teaching of jesus, in fact a lot of them are traditions which are time related and which may not be applicable today.

I think Ellen is now doing her policing job. She just deleted my reply to Dominique’s comments against me. I hope she does this to other members. Otherwise, I wouldn’t blame other members for being critical of her bias treatment. As I keep saying, I have nothing against Ellen personally; that’s why I’m still here (not because she’s banning me). I’m free to go on my own without anyone pushing me. The only thing I would like our good moderator to improve is her management style of this blog. Is it too much? I deliberately used profanities in my last message here and tried to see if it would be deleted. Indeed, it was. But what I can’t comprehend is why she allowed others to post theirs freely even if their language was foul and too personal. That’s a question I hope can be answered.

  174. npongco npongco

norpil, what is a Christian? Please define it. To me, a Christian is one who follows Christ. Following Christ means obeying His teachings. Obeying His teachings means there should be no selective obedience or one just picks those teachings that are only convenient and easy to follow. It’s all or none. And what does Christ say about traditions that are man-made? What does Christ say about pagan traditions and customs? We see many of these being practiced today isn’t it? And especially true with the religion that’s predominant in the Philippines. But are we expected by God to follow all that is written in the Bible? Yes, but God is patient and understanding. That’s why He allows repentance. That’s why He calls us to His fold. That’s why He wants all the sinners to return to Him.
With faith and acceptance to His teachings, one is baptized and if he endures until the end, he shall be saved. That’s a biblical teaching; yet, why is there infant baptism when an infant cannot have faith? The ones saying and answering “amen” are the godparents. And why should there be baptism by proxy or baptising the dead. The dead knows nothing. It’s sad…God’s teachings are being twisted and perveted these days.

  175. Come to think of it, but this show of bravado of the Bansot is more like a pulubi trying hard to show off that she can save the rich from another pauper of a North Korean Bansot!!! 🙁

    May delusion nga!

  176. Hey npongco,

Speaking of religious practices, have you answered my question in a previous thread?

Artsee reckoned you’re with INC. I told him I thought you were a Roman Catholic. Am I right or are you indeed a member of the Iglesia ni Christo?

  177. npongco npongco

I already answered lengthily in that threat you’re referring to. Anyway, may I repeat what I said over there…no, I’m not and will never be one. I hate cults.

  178. npongco npongco

Anna, I’m re-posting here what I wrote in the other thread you mentioned:

No I’m not, Anna. I’m not an INC member and will never be. INC is among the most popular cults we have today. The others are Jehova’s, Mormons, Moonies…I was born and raised as a Catholic. But quite honestly, I’ve long doubted this religion. I began to get cold in my Catholic faith when Cardinal Sin and these priests started politicking. They were very instrumental in the ouster of two duly elected Presidents of our Republic, Marcos and Erap. I asked myself: How could I belong in a church and religion where these leaders don’t practice what they preach. I said to myself: I don’t want to be a part of this hypocrisy. Now, I believe that religion and church are there just to control the people. Such groups create fear and always talk about the unknown. Scare tactics are being applied. Constant brainwashing and money making schemes just to fatten the pockets of these people running these groups. In the end, it’s all about faith and your personal relationship to the creator up there.

  179. Mrivera Mrivera

    Mrivera:

Amen to what you said.

  180. Mrivera:

Pero ang sabi ni Hesukristo, siya ay anak ng Diyos, to be exact, “The Only Begottten Son”!—different from all of us, spiritual children of a kind and loving Heavenly Father!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life!” (John 3:16)

  181. npongco npongco

Mrivera, I’m also keen on studying Islam. I find their Koran very similar to our Bible. Yes, they only believe in one God and consider Jesus as a man and prophet. I think INC got their doctrine from the Muslims because INC doesn’t believe in Christ’s deity and Trinity. Careful analysis of Christ’s true nature indeed proves that He could be a man not God. He might have possessed qualities not found in ordinary men such as sinless and authorized by God to preach the Gospel. Jesus indeed said He’s the Son of God. The Bible says that. But, there’s a great difference between Son of God and God the Son. From Genesis to Revelation, nowhere we could read that Jesus is God the Son but only Son of God. As Christians, aren’t we also sons (and daughters) of God? But this doesn’t make as also gods.
There are many verses that seems to prove that Jesus is God; but these could be just interpretations that are sometimes erroneous. Don’t think that my above argument truly reflects my belief in Christ’s nature. No. I’m just seriously studying the matter as I compare it to the teachings of Islam.

  182. Mrivera Mrivera

  183. You bet, Mrivera.

npongco: sorry for being late in replying. this weekend i gave my only daughter to a man with christian orthodox belief so i have not been following this blog for some days. i have defined already my own belief on christianity and there is no use in saying it again. i have said also before that i am not a church goer and doubted much before. but religion or faith is not so much on doubts but more on belief. neither can science help so much either. reading specially alone can be confusing.maybe simpler persons like me have easier solutions like what i wrote above.
