A touching reminder of Edsa I

It was the most unexpected occasion by the most unexpected person to be reminded that 21 years ago, the nation stood united for freedom and democracy and ousted a well-entrenched dictator.

It was the first encore (he did three) of the brilliant Romanian violinist Alexandru Tomescu that reminded us of the exhilarating moment evening of Feb. 24, 1986 when it was announced that Ferdinand Marcos and his family had left Malacañang.

Tomescu played “Bayan Ko”, the anthem of Filipino freedom fighters. It was actually his tribute to the late conductor-violinist Redentor Romero, who introduced him to the Filipino audience in 1999.

I felt goose pimples listening to Tomescu’s fervent interpretation of Constancio de Guzman’s plaintive yearning for the Filipino nation to be set free. Scenes of rallyists raising their clenched fist singing “Bayan Ko” raced in my mind as Tomescu’s violin reached that part when we would sing, “Pilipinas kong minumutya; Pugad ng luha ko’t dalita; Aking adhika; Makita kang sakdal laya.” Not a few in the audience shed a tear.

Tomescu will play the heart- tugging piece again in Bacolod on Thursday, March 1 at the Governor’s Hall in the provincial capitol. He will also be in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija today.

Tomescu treated music lovers to an evening of electrifying performance last Saturday at the Philamlife Theater. Accompanied by pianist Mary Anne Espina, Tomescu started the evening with Mozart’s Sonata in F Major K376 followed by Brahms Sonata No. 2 in A Major.

The second part had shorter but equally enthralling pieces: Brahms’ Scherzo, Mozart’s Adagio in E Major, Saint-Saens’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (the most applauded), Rachmaninoff’s Vocalize and Paganini’s La Campanella.

It was an evening of fine music which was just perfect because earlier I was at Plaza Miranda for the Genuine Opposition’s proclamation rally. I stayed only for the first hour, enough to see and feel the fervor of the people wanting a restoration of honesty, morality, and rule of law in government.

The GO rally did not have the glossy, flashy atmosphere of TEAM GMA’s rally funded by money stolen from the people. The venue, Plaza Miranda, set the back-to-basics atmosphere with the usual candidates’ streamers filling the historic place with political color. Except for Pilita Corrales, I didn’t see any showbiz personality on stage. It was the thousands of people, braving the heat of the afternoon sun that impressed me.

I was able to listen to Loren Legarda, who is leading in all the senatorial surveys, relate her protest against cheating in the 2004 elections and telling the people that aside from her advocacies on environment and women’s issues in her previous stint in the Senate, she will be working harder on addressing the problem of grinding poverty in the country.

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III surprised me. In previous TV interviews, he came on rather laid-back. Last Saturday, he was vigorous in his five –minute speech. He acknowledged his famous family members. “I’m known as the son of Ninoy Aquino and Cory Aquino, brother of Kris and now brother-in-law of James Yap.” He asked voters to please write “Noynoy Aquino” if they want vote for him because there are two other senatorial candidates named Aquino. One is Theodore Aquino and the other is his aunt, Tessie Aquino-Oreta, who defected to team GMA.

Expectedly, Noynoy reminded the audience of the significance of that day, Feb. 24, “This was the day we ousted the Marcos dictatorship and restored democracy.” He lamented not only the waning of the spirit of Edsa One but the assault on it by the Arroyo administration through various presidential orders like EO 464, Calibrated Pre-emptive Response and Proclamation 1017.

I thought it was a fitting way to observe People Power One.

* * *
I like this report on the EDSA One 21st anniversary by ABS-CBN Online. Take note of the punch line.

President Gloria Arroyo discouraged Filipinos from launching another People Power revolt saying this would merely derail the economic gains already made by her administration, ANC reported.

“In 2001 the world tolerated EDSA I. The world will not, however, tolerate another EDSA but will instead condemn the Philippines as a country whose political system is hopelessly unstable and the Filipinos as among the finest people in the world but who always shoot themselves in the foot,”Mrs. Arroyo said during Sunday’s commemoration of the People Power I anniversary at the EDSA People Power monument.

According to Mrs. Arroyo, having another people power revolution will just derail the gains already made by her administration.

“How will we finally bring the gains of the economy to the average Filipino which at the end of the day is what is truly meant by people power,’ Mrs. Arroyo said.

“She conveniently omitted the fact that it was the second People Power revolution which unseated her predecessor, former President Joseph Estrada, in 2001 and brought her to power.

Ngayon, masasabi bang mayabang ako at walang pinag-aralan.

“These past years under our government, there was another people power that happened. This is the support of the people and sacrifice for our difficult but necessary decisions to strengthen our economy.”

Ekek mong kulubot!

Aking adhika, makita kang sakdal laya”

A timely reminder coming from Tomescu’s violins, or a prophesy of upcoming gory violence?

  13. Tongue T,

This song BTW was not actually made for Ninoy as believed by my Japanese friends who joined the rallies before EDSA 1 and were actually tolerated to join the EDSA 1 together with the so-called “leftists” and sang “Bayan Ko.” I had to tell them that it was a song made in the 30’s when the Philippines was negotiating for freedom from the US of A.

Yes, those were the days when the Philippines would rather be free than be under US rule. Ironically, WWII made a hero of Americans and the survivors in the Philippines must have thought they would be better off retracting their agreement with the US to be free, but the US by the end of WWII was just as broke and could not have the Philippines repaired to its pre-WWII splendour, and so the granting of independence to the Philippines on July 4, 1946. The rest is history.

Yup, we saw the emergence of a group of idiots who did not want total independence, and if they could have their way wanted the Philippines to be still under US rule. And the US, not really wanting to lose its hold on the Philippines, has beenn doing just that.

Thus, the claim that the enemies of the Bansot will not succeed in removing her because she has the blessings of Bush and the US government, but now we’ll see what she will do with the US Methodist priests now warning about asking the US Congress to stop aids to the Philippines. Why? It is because the first victims of these atrocities committed on so-called “leftists and commies” by her paid lip servers in the AFP are pastors/bishops and members of the Methodist Church.

Frankly, what they should do in Philippines schools is make an emphasis on the history of the Philippines during the struggle for freedom under US rule. Then, perhaps, people there will be able to appreciate more the meaning sentiments in the lyrics of “Bayan Ko.”

  14. Oops, this should read: Frankly, what they should do in PHILIPPINE schools is make an emphasis on the history of the Philippines during the struggle for freedom under US rule. Yang 2-party system talaga yan ang recommendation ni Chief Justice and Ambassador Davide kay pangulo…ewan hindi pa napatupad dahil hindi papayag ang GO.

Arriving from my sorties in Laguna and Quezon to campaign for GO candidates, I immediately went on reading some postings in the latest thread. I’m certainly fascinated by Doy who is clearly bashing GO/UNO candidates.

I will take Doy as knowledgeable, well-equipped and ready for discussion on topics in this blog. And therefore, I beg to disagree with you regarding the “two-party system na hindi ipinatutupad dahil hindi papayag ang GO”. What a trifle statement which is bereft of the truth.

Being an educated person, you certainly is aware that we have a multi-party system in accordance with the present constitution. Any seating president cannot just impose a two-party system even if, you said, was recommended by Davide. The constitution must be amended first to implement such important political proviso.

Meantime, GO is not yet an accredited party but an umbrella organization for the purpose of this current political campaign. So, to say na “hindi papayag ang GO” is quite a shot in the dark just to have something to say against GO. It is not the monopoly of the administration to have a two-party system. Even the opposition posited their desire to streamline our political system. Lito Banayo, who’s running for vice-mayor in Manila under GO, has written about the “Streamlining of government”, and the two-party system is one of his advocacies. I believe many others share the same sentiment.

Doy, I have something for you. In our campaign sorties, team gma will get a sound thrashing come election, not only because Laguna and Quezon are not beholden to gma. Even those who presently aligned themselves with the administration will drop team gma like a hot potato.

What you should write in the blog is something to convince us to admire the team gma candidates, why they are better than the GO candidates. You should not be merely parroting your pro-gma stance and everything about GO is unwelcome.

In a good campaign, try not to minimize the strength of your opponent. Try hard to project the image of your candidates. If you can do that, then, we are on our way for a good and decent discussions in this forum.

  17. doy doy

Well, it’s really hard to say because there are still people who like the admin.
There are many achievements of this present admin.

  18. joeseg joeseg

Taking from your words, of course naman, “there are still people who like the admin” because of its many achievements. Then you have now the chance to tell us what are those achievements. Then we will tell you what are the issues against gma and her administration. This is politics and whether you agree with me or not, this is also war. War of the nerves, war of words, but still we have are educated and sane, we have to explain our sides with rationality.

Come, let me hear from you what are the achievements you would like to let us know. Your side, our side, Pros and cons. Decent discussions. Point by point.

You wrote “actually, GO is not genuine but fake”. I could surmise that you have the proof that GO is fake and perhaps, you have the inside info. Ngayon, patunayan mo by naming who are the GO candidates from the administration. Para malaman natin dahil karamihan dito sa blog are clearly going for GO candidates.

  21. Thank God for Ronald Reagan and Paul Wolfowitz for telling Marcos to Cut and Cut Cleanly. Otherwise there would be no sentimentality over what would have been the Edsa People Power Massacre of 1986. Or a flight to Paoay, not Hawaii, and a deadly civil war that might have seen the CPP NPA come to power. Edsa 1 was killed by Edsa 2 and the Left then proceeded to bury them both by trying to coopt people power as a revoutionary tactic. viz that insane Kangaroo People’s Court. Filipinos are too smart to be fooled twice.

Sorry Ms Ellen, as you already much aware, I don’t normally do this, but this I just can’t resist. Someone email it to me and I would like to share it with you and your bloggers, “Interview With Manny Pacquiao”. I thought it’s funny.

    Balita -USA
    PERRYSCOPE
    Perry Diaz

    Interview with Manny Pacquiao

Whew! Finally, I was able to get an interview with Manny Pacquiao. I met him at the bar in the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati last week. Manny ordered a shot of Remy Martin XO and I settled for a San Miguel beer. Manny seemed quite relaxed.

I asked him how life was treating him? “Never been better,” he replied, “things are really looking up.” “I can see,” I said. Manny was wearing a Tommy Bahama Hawaiian shirt, a large diamond-studded gold crucifix around his neck, a pair of 5-carat diamond earrings, and a humongous Marc Ecko watch.

“I hope that you’ll remain physically and mentally fit for the biggest challenge of your life. I heard that you’re running for Congress. Is it true?” Manny smiled and said, “Absolutely! I still do my daily workout but recently I started reading a lot of books on politics. The late Senate President Amang Rodriguez is my hero. Amang’s motto was ‘Politics is addition’ and I agree with him. But I don’t add myself. I let my accountant do the addition for me. He he he…”

I asked him my first question: “Why are you running for political office?” Manny pondered the question for a moment and then said, “Actually, Congress is just a stepping stone for me because I’ll be running for President in 2010.” “Wow! That’s fantastic,” I said, “and how are you going to prove yourself in Congress to become a serious presidential contender in 2010?” “That’s easy, first I’m going to balance the trade deficit,” Manny explained, “it’s like boxing, the more punches I throw at my opponent the better off I am.” “Hmm…” I said thinking aloud, “it’s like trading punches….” “You got it!” Manny retorted. “But how are you going to balance the trade deficit?” I asked. “Easy,” he said, “I’ll stop importing goods.” “Hmmm… I guess that would solve the problem,” I conceded.

My second question to Manny was: “How are you going to solve the population explosion in the Philippines? I can see — with your six-inch crucifix — that you are a practicing Catholic which means that you’re probably against abortion, right?” Manny replied,“I consider abortion a murder, plain and simple, no ifs and buts.” “I don’t mean to put you on a spot,” I asked, “I know this is a sticky issue but how are you going to control population explosion?” “Easy, my friend,” Manny answered, “I’ll push for legislation that would make civilicy mandatory after two children are born in a family.” “Huh? What do you mean by civilicy?” I asked. And he said, “Civilicy, you know… no more sex.” “Oh! You mean celibacy,” I said. “Yes, yes… that’s the right word,” he replied and then explained, “You see, it works in China. So it should also work in the Philippines.”

I realized then that Manny is smarter that I think. So I asked him a more complex issue: “Manny, more than 3,000 Filipinos are leaving everyday for overseas to find jobs. How are you going to stop the ‘Brain Drain’? We’re having a shortage of professionals particularly the doctors and nurses because they’re all leaving for good-paying jobs abroad.” He took a sip of his cognac, swirled it and gulped it. Then he said, “The problem why Filipinos are leaving is because there are no jobs here or in the case of doctors and nurses, they’re underpaid, right?” “You said it,” I replied. Then he said, “So, what I am going to do is attract foreign companies to set up manufacturing plants here and pay no taxes for 15 years. And to sweeten the pot, I’ll lease them the land at one peso a year for 25 years.” “I’m listening…go on,” I said. He continued, “That will create jobs and industrialize the Philippines within seven years. I will adopt Joe De Venecia’s ‘747 Plan,’ that is, sustainable growth of 7% for 7 years. We will then become an exporting nation and we’ll have trade surplus instead of deficit. That’s the key to our progress. We‘ll become an economic tiger.” His face glowed in triumph.

“Manny,” I asked, “where did you get all these ideas? They’re out of sight!” “Perry, leading a country is like boxing,” he said. “Oh? And how is that?” I queried. He explained, “My secret in boxing is that I let my opponent hit me with painless jabs for several rounds. After five rounds, he’ll get tired and become reckless with his defense. That’s when I go for the knockout. It works all the time. You’ve seen my bouts with Erik Morales, right?” “Of course, I’ve seen all three. You’re the best, Manny,” I complimented him.

I changed the subject and said, “Now, let’s talk about the biggest problem in our country, corruption. How are you going to wipe out corruption?” “Ha! That’s my favorite issue,” he quipped. “Well, let’s hear it then,” I urged him. And he said, “You see, we have corruption because we allow it to happen and corrupt officials aren’t afraid because, except in the military — as in the case of Gen. Carlos Garcia — nobody goes to jail for corruption. Well, we’ll just have to be like the military. You said it yourself in one of your columns.” “No kidding, you read my columns?” I asked. He replied, “All the time. In one of your articles, you said that poverty is the symptom, corruption is the disease, and discipline is the prescription. I agree with you and that’s what I am going to do — have discipline in the government. Corrupt officials will pay a high price and that is: jail time.” “I am pretty sure that would scare a lot of corrupt officials,” I said.

“You just mentioned another big issue — poverty. How are you going to deal with it?” I asked. He replied, “Like I said, and you said it, poverty is the symptom and corruption is the disease. Stop corruption and the life of the people will improve. Look at Singapore. It is one of the least corrupt countries in the world and it has one of the highest per capita income. Lee Chiang Yee was a disciplinarian.” “You mean, Lee Kuan Yew,” I corrected him. “Whatever,” he said, “but what will eventually eradicate poverty is a combination of many things. But the most important are industrialization and fighting corruption.”

“Manny, you’re talking like a statesman, not politician,” I said. “I’ve never been in politics so I am not a politician. I love my country and people,” he said and made the sign of the cross. “Talking of which, how are you going to defeat your political opponents?” I asked and then added, “they’re heavyweights.” He became defensive and said, “Heavyweights! Listen to me, they may be heavyweights but they don’t know how to punch. You probably weigh about 220 pounds, right?” “Yes,” I said meekly. He said, “So you’re a heavyweight too. Do you know how to punch? Okay, let’s try it, punch me, come on, punch me.” It sounded like a command. “I don’t want to punch you, Manny,” I said. “Well,” he said, “then I’ll show you how I punch a heavyweight like you.” And before I could react, I heard my jawbone cracked. I fell from my chair and suddenly the room was dark. I was seeing thousands of twinkling little stars. And before I hit the floor, the bell rang. I was saved by the bell. I sat up on the floor and Manny was gone. And my alarm clock was still ringing. I must have had a nightmare.

Edsa I was an opportunity squandered. The success of the Edsa I was not because of the masses marching, Marcos could have easily repealed them, but the combinations of the U.S. Giving up on Marcos, Marcos failing health, and the betrayal of his Loyalist, and Cardinal Sin and the Filipino Masses. But it was the same people who took the opportunity to have change the course of History, but instead were no different than Marcos, as we now in retrospect had seen what they truly are.

As the 2lst anniversary had come and gone, the people who had already lost trust in the same institution didn’t even bothered to observe the anniversarry. But once we achieved the hopes and aspirations that could have been the aftermath of Edsa I, it will again become a significant event in our History, but until then, the masses would rather have jobs, decent shelters, security of life and in short free from wants…

I’m posting from comments from a previous thread (February 25th, 2007 at 11:50 pm)..My comments were based from a Malaya article online (02/26/2007) entitled, “No room for another Edsa: Gloria” by Regina Bengco:

“PRESIDENT Arroyo, addressing a thin crowd of around 1,000 people at yesterday’s 21st anniversary of the 1986 People Power revolt, said people power is not all about ousting a government, adding the international community would not accept another extra-constitutional seizure of power even if a peaceful one..”

COMMENTS: From what I know, People Power IS about ousting a DIRTY gov’t, a gov’t who is tainted w/ scandals, a gov’t w/ no credibility whatsoever, a gov’t who simply cannot govern & is scared of her own people ! I do not think that the international community will either accept a bogus president like Gloria, will they ?

“..Arroyo said the world embraced the Edsa people power revolt in 1986 and tolerated the second revolt in 2001.”

COMMENTS: Instead of embracing People Power in 1986, the world merely “tolerated the second revolt in 2001″ because apparently Gloria STOLE the Presidency.

“But she warned that “the world will not, however, forgive another Edsa but would instead condemn the Philippines as a country whose political system is hopelessly unstable and the Filipinos as among the finest people in the world but who always shoot themselves in the foot.”

COMMENTS: What the world is not going to forgive is the Filipinos continuing w/ Gloria at the helm. Gloria made our “political system..hopelessly unstable”. Excuse me, it is Gloria who shot herself “in the foot” & not the people ! After all who said “Hello..” to Garci ? Who destroyed the Consitution w/ all the EOs, etc. ?

“She said foreign investors would no longer invest in the Philippines and the gains of the economy would not be brought to the average Filipino.”

COMMENTS: Has Gloria’s economy, w/c she claims is doing great, reached the average man ? No, it hasn’t. Compared to our neighbours in the region, the Philippine economy is one of the slowest gorwing economies.

“She said the Filipinos exercised people power by sacrificing and supporting the imposition of taxes that would stabilize the economy.

She said such support has resulted in savings which are being used to generate new jobs, build new roads, bridges and ports, and deliver better education and health services.”

COMMENTS: Gloria RAMMED the 12% VAT down our throats ! She did all that to have more money for her dirty tactics ! What new jobs ?! The country is getting brain drained because of an exodus of people leaving the country !

  51. Well, Edsa I was ok. Except that like everything else that started out good (such as the jeepney and democracy itself), Pinoys have all but succeeded in utterly corrupting the concept.

We’ve done Edsa “revolutions” once too many. And the irony to end all ironies is that it was no less than Mrs. Time Woman of the Year 1986 herself, Cory Aquino who presided over the last of these street revolutions (the Commonwealth Avenue “revolution” of 2005) that drove in the final nail on the coffin of the once venerable concept of Pinoy-style “people power”.

I believe you.

  54. chi chi

The Unano said that there’s no longer EDSA uprising because the world would no longer tolerate it. Hahah! Now, the Unano has assumed the role of spokesperson of the world. Where is she coming from? hahahah!

OK ang sagot sa kanya ni Noynoy Aquino: “The world will always respect a people that stands for what is right. Let us not be deceived by her claims.”

“EDSA is about people fighting against poverty and ensuring that democracy is never again threatened. It is also about holding government accountable for actions that threaten our institutions and our democratic rights and processes,” he said. http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryID=68210

  55. Chi:

Bakit the world would no longer tolerate it? Anong ibig niyang sabihin. Stupid talaga ang ungas. Ang mga taga ibang bansa ay wala nang tiwala sa mga EDSA-EDSA ng mga pilipino dahil hindi naman totoo, but who can stop the Filipinos if they want to remove the Midget, her husband and her lackeys through an armed revolution kahit na ba iyong isang Magdalo is now seeking a peaceful resolution to the problems of the Philippines through election to the Senate?

Alam mo ang ginagawa ni Bansot ay conditioning like the kind of conditioning she and her promo advisers have tried to condition the minds of the Filipinos that she is irreplaceable by comparing her with Erap, the people’s hero whom they propagandized as a uneducated brat from the slums, e iyon pala anak ng mayaman!

Now, we know for a fact that she is very irreplaceable, basta lang huwag nilang dayain ang eleksyon.

  56. Valdemar Valdemar

There’s no need really for another EDSA whatever we can call it. After everything has been consolidated and manipulated, money, the carrot on a stick, has polarized almost everything to a point that the administration can dictate anything to neutralize foes. They have to rig elections, and they did by simply blocking use of computers. And they have blocked it again this time. They have made turncoatism to their advantage. There are bright boys there doing nothing but focus and float actions to take but quickly denied as misquoted if those turn out bad. Until they would come out with better ways. And what can we hope for now? Quarrels!I remember I asked a young boy in Jolo way back why they wont quit their futile eternal war and comeback to the folds, and he replied, “..we are looking towards that, we are only waiting for the army to surrender!” Funny, aint it? But thats their mindset. So lets wait and hope the TUTAs unite with us, thats the dream of everyone on either side, I guess.

  57. chi chi

    Yuko,

Well, her conditioning of pinoys mind that nobody can replace her isn’t working! She gotta go pronto!

  61. Chabeli Chabeli

Noynoy was correct in saying that “The lessons of the two people power upheavals have apparently been lost on President Arroyo..” He said that “She just didn’t get it”. ADuh ?!

“EDSA is about people fighting against poverty and ensuring that democracy is never again threatened. It is also about holding government accountable for actions that threaten our institutions and our democratic rights and processes,” he said.

He stressed that Mrs. Arroyo’s statements were “meant to instill doubt and fear in the people and just accept her presidency despite questions regarding the legitimacy of her government.”

Gloria shot herself “in the foot” with her statement in commemorating the 1986 People Power revolt.

  62. Chabeli: “EDSA is about people fighting against poverty and ensuring that democracy is never again threatened. It is also about holding government accountable for actions that threaten our institutions and our democratic rights and processes,” he said.

    ******

This is apparently what some bloggers here who are no doubt part of the Pidals’ Internet Brigade trying to do—instill fear and doubt among Filipinos that they cannot remove the bogus president, and with their friends controlling the Philippine Tongress and courts, no way will any EDSA or people power succeed in removing her.

It will surely be a slap on the faces of these creeps when Trillanes, et al win seats in the Senate and Congress even when in incarceration. It will surely be a new demonstration of not just a people’s power but a people’s will!!!

IBASURA ANG ADMINISTRASYON! IBOTO ANG OPOSISYON!
