Interview with Trillanes

detention-center.jpgAntonio Trillanes IV, senatorial candidate of the Genuine Opposition, has admitted that four years of detention has sharpened his understanding of the political crisis confronting the country today.

In an interview in his detention cell in Camp Bonifacio, Trillanes offers no apology to what he and some 300 members of the Magdalo group did last July 27, 2003, which was to declare a withdrawal of support from a president who they believe betrayed the trust of the people.

Although his entry into politics indicates that he is going mainstream in pursuing reforms in governance that he envisions, he says radical means cannot be totally ruled out if the government goes against the interest of the people. He said Arroyo has made the situation ripe for it.

It is on his family circumstances that Trillanes shows signs of mellowing down. He speaks with a tinge of sadness about the death of his son, Alan Andrew, who lived only for 21 days in 2004, while he was in detention.

Rather than fret about his imprisonment, Trillanes said he takes every day in detention as a day closer to freedom. “I have embraced this philosophy that everything happens for a purpose and God’s will. Nothing happens that is not willed by God. I will just prepare myself for whatever he wills for me.”

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. You’ve been here for almost four years? What has four years of detention done to you?

A. A lot. I believe I had the chance to purify my soul, strengthen my character, and widen my horizon. I had the chance to learn so many things more about life, about society, governance. But most importantly, I had the chance to really be close to my family. I don’t know the effect of the separation on my family but as for me, those are the times (conjugal visits) that I treasured most. Every minute that we were together.

(Trillanes is married to Arlene Orejana, also an officer in the AFP. They have a son, Francis Seth, 9 years old and a daughter Thea Estelle, 8.Alan Andrew, if he had lived would have been three years old by now.)

Q. Were there moments in the last four years when you thought people have abandoned you?

A. We had that feeling after Oakwood. We had our doubts if what we did truly had the consent of the people. But we were proven right by Gloria, four years after.

Q. In what way?

A. That what we did was right. Now, the people are with us. I believe the issue then was so complicated that the people didn’t have the chance to absorb them. But eventually, people now realize or have begun to appreciate what we fought for.

Q. Do you think the results of this coming election would be an affirmation of what Oakwood was?

A. Not really. We have gotten past Oakwood. We have already achieved moral victory. I already have said that the day I filed my certificate of candidacy. It’s a statement that nobody should be afraid. My candidacy is the ultimate display of defiance. Four years after Oakwood, I’m still bringing my issues. This time, bigger issues.

Q. When you were asked if you were going the way of Gringo Honasan, you said, “I think not.” Why not?

A. Two people cannot possibly live the same lives. I will be such a copycat that I will follow or imitate what he undertook. I’m my own man. I’d be doing things differently. It doesn’t mean also that what he did what wrong. I should not be a judge of what he did.

Q. Gringo apologized for his “methodology.” Do you think you have something to apologize for?

A. I will not apologize just to save my own skin and get out of detention. I’d like to use this analogy. Let’s say that I’m walking in a dark alley and I witness a rape. I have two choices. I turn the other way and pretend that no rape was taking place. Or do everything and try to stop it. In that case, I tried to stop the rape from continuing and I got beaten up in the process. So what am I going to apologize for? For attempting to stop her from raping this country? It doesn’t make sense.

Q. When you decided to enter the political arena, many took it that you have renounced the use of force to effect change. Is the reading correct?

A. It’s impossible for me to do that now especially that I’m detained. But like I said in previous interviews, rebellion is justified if the government goes against the interest of the people. That’s in the preamble of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. It’s also in the US Declaration of Independence.

Q. Does the situation right now warrant that?

A. I believe so. I believe the environment is ripe for that. Because we have a president who has no mandate. Somebody who cheated in an election. Somebody who has no qualms of killing her own people just to stay in power, among other crimes that she has committed like plundering the wealth of this country, selling our country’s independence. These are tantamount to treason.

Q. The deployment of the military in urban slum areas. Is that related to the creation of the environment you just described now?

A. No. This is some scare tactics being employed by some misinformed commanders of the military. They believe they can coerce people into toeing, into submitting themselves to the will of this administration.

Q. Scare tactics of some commanders? You mean the deployment is not an order from the top?

A. No. It’s an order from the top. But what I mean is that if they are in their right mind, they wouldn’t recommend that. They should advise the President, Ma’am we can’t do that because this thing has happened already and it did not work. It happened during the martial law era. The people became more and more defiant. During the Spanish time, the same scare tactics were employed and it didn’t work.

Q. Scare people? What’s the objective?

A: So that the civil unrest will be controlled, along with indoctrination. Dissuade people from supporting leftist organizations.

Q. Some say that we should allow GMA to finish her term up to 2010, let her concentrate on governance.

A. They are saying that because they can afford to wait. This group belongs to the middle and upper classes. They will not die if they wait out three more years. But other people can’t. There are people who just subsist on noodles and those people in Mindanao can’t afford three more years. The way the country is being plundered, there may not be anything left after three years. That’s very selfish of them to say, let’s wait three more years. We go back to the rape analogy. Okay we allow the rape three more years. And we are assuming that she will step down in 2010? I believe 100 percent that she won’t step down in 2010 because who will protect her? The only thing protecting her physically and politically is her being president. After 2010, she will still be accountable, answerable for all the things she committed against our people.

Q. If there’s another people power, would you join?

A. Like I said, if it’s God’s will that I’m supposed to be there when such a things happen, I would be there.

(In a recent interview Trillanes said he has committed himself for the removal of Arroyo through an impeachment process if he wins.)

The solution remains the same. We have to remove GMA (President Arroyo) because she is the leader who is allowing, tolerating these things.

(Trillanes said the President tolerated the rigging of the 2004 elections as evidenced by the Hello Garci tapes.)

She does not only allow it, she herself took part in the operation. We heard that in the Garci tape.

“You can never have a clean government with such a president, that is my solution. Replace her with a competent one so the new leader can choose a competent (AFP) chief of staff, other Cabinet secretaries. That’s how it goes, plain and simple.

I’m very confident that the people will stand up this time to protect their right to choose their own leaders.

They (people) will not allow cheating anymore. They’ve had enough, the cheating that we have tolerated in 2004 brought disaster to this country for the past three years. It did not bring us any good. It brought us more corruption, more deaths. More poverty and now hunger, we have to rectify that. – Ellen Tordesillas and Victor Reyes

  1. This quote from Trillanes I do like, ““I have embraced this philosophy that everything happens for a purpose and God’s will. Nothing happens that is not willed by God. I will just prepare myself for whatever he wills for me.”

Spoken by a man who has been truly touched by God unlike some hypocrites who have blasphemed God not just once but a lot of times, and have caused their people miseries and pains.

I support Trillanes and pray that God will allow him to win this election, and with God’s help make him succeed in freeing the Philippines of the criminals running the country like hell.

    Ellen,

Wala siyang posas sa picture, and I like the smile of the guard.

Like what I said in a previous post, Trillanes and company’s complaints at Oakwood were proven true, and they’re victors!

Trillanes said, “I will not apologize just to save my own skin and get out of detention.”

    Spoken like a MAN!

In the blogsite of the rebel military, there is posted an earlier radio message from Esperon directing his officers to tear down all of Trillanes’ posters. This message was addressed to the commanding general of the Army, General Tolentino. Yet the military denied this allegation. So what proof is “good enough” for the military leadership, even when proof positive is already being bared? (NCO)

The answered of Trillanes to the questions were frightening to Gloria’s administration such a clear statements of him has clearly and already won him a moral victory. Such courage and conviction is surely lacking to Honasan and Esperon.

Yes, of course! He is in an awful situation, when he joined the military he gave up some of his rights, such as the right to complete unfettered free speech, he toke an oath to defend the constitution, but ,he refused and defy to take an order from corrupt commander, his conviction won’t allow him to see anyone raped an innocent victims .He become a clear and present danger to the illegal commander-in-chief. Trillanes ideology will attract some of his comrades in the military and their numbers will multiply. He is the catalyst in filtering the foul odor in government.

A vote for Trillanes is a vote for a change.

    Ate Ellen,

“I cannot deny that he was a part of that incident in Oakwood. I have been asked why I am supporting someone who did that. Yet I do not see Lt. Senior Grade Trillanes as a rebel.

  34. Re Australian visit of the Pandak. US and Australian military installations in the Philippines even when there is a law that bans foreign military bases in the Philippines. Iba iyong exercise sa
permanent military installations as the US bases in Japan.

I think the reason Japan is able to create a defense ministry now is because the US has agreed to give up the bases in Okinawa, etc. in response to Japanese call for the removal of US bases in Japan. Kulong sila kapag nahuli silang loloko-loko dito hindi katulad sa Pilipinas, pinangakuan lang ng safe transport to the US in case of a revolution, peaceful and otherwise ala-EDSA 1, kalimutan na ang Philippine interest.

I’m not really anti-American but it’s time the US stops acting like the Papacy of old as in the infallibility of the Pope. Before they subject anyone against the Pope to some inquisition. Now, the US attack a nation when the US president calls a leader of a nation as his enemy and marks him for execution by hook or by crook!

At least, in the US, the Senate and Congress are not under the control of the mad man at the White House unlike in the Philippines where a criminal is now the Commander in Cheat of all branches of the government. Walang pinatawad.

AFP: So sue us for electioneering

    BY VICTOR REYES

THE military yesterday dared disgruntled officers to file electioneering charges against Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. and Army chief Lt. Gen. Romeo Tolentino for allegedly ordering them to vote for Team Unity candidates.

Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, AFP public information office chief, said the military leadership is considering the officers “bogus” if they do not come out in the open.

“The right to vote is their individual right and nobody can infringe on that right. So it is along that context that since that is their right, they can fight for their right,” Bacarro said.

Genuine Opposition candidate Antonio Trillanes IV last Friday said Esperon has issued a radio message to military commanders to ensure that the Team Unity candidates will get a 12-0 win.

Another GO candidate, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, said last Sunday he received text messages from Western Samar that Tolentino has asked officers and men in the region to vote straight Team Unity.

Defense reporters also received a text message saying soldiers in Central Luzon are being forced to vote for TU on orders of Tolentino.

A military officer said Tolentino has authorized a three-day furlough for soldiers on condition that they will convince their family to vote for TU candidates. http://www.malaya.com.ph/may08/news5.htm

I think he is the most credible non-politician to lead us into this Final Endeavor.

RE: AFP: So sue us for electioneering

Where? Maybe AFP chief Assperon is thinking of a different planet. The rule of law is prostituted under the corrupt Arroyo regime. Partisan Comelec commissionaires have shown their colors for junking a petition for disqualification of Jose de Venecia for allegedly vote-buying after he distributed insurance cards in Pangasinan and the disqualification of Naga City Mayor Robredo based on his citizenship issue. Comelec can not be trusted in delivering fair play. The ghost of 2004 massive electoral fraud keeps haunting the Comelec and the legitimacy of Gloria Arroyo. The Filipino electorate will perform the final exorcism ritual in May 14, 2007. Evil Gloria and her demon entities will be a history soon. AMEN

    Trillanes joins forum from jail

MANILA, Philippines — Accused military rebel and Genuine Opposition senatorial bet Antonio Trillanes IV on Monday became the first candidate under detention in the country to participate in a news forum via teleconferencing.

With the prospect of remaining behind bars even if he wins in the May 14 elections, Trillanes told reporters at the weekly Kapihan sa Manila Hotel that he intended to use the same technology to participate in debates, inquiries and other legislative processes in the Senate.

“I don’t see any reason the four walls of my detention cell should affect my performance as a senator if I am fortunate to win a Senate seat,” Trillanes said.

It is very important for the Filipino people especially the voters to realize that this coming election within few more days, that the future fate of our country is at stake. The damages has been done, we are in deep hole, Gloria and the henchman Esperon keep on digging. The damage has been done to our country is incalculable.

The main cornerstone of Gloria’s strategy for winning the election for her TU is voter’s suppression, Esperon will intentionally putting up barriers between legitimate votes and switch it with padded manufactured votes, He was a main player in the past, and how can he be trust. The voters are now more incline to this dirty tactics, they will not go along with this cynical, dirty tactics of electoral strategy. Enough is enough, we need to protect the ballots in the voting places, bring bottled waters and a pack of cigarrettes.Oh yeah! Don’t forget a camera phone.

According to the spin lies of Fatsu, he has seen a light, a very, very bright light. Then he has a conference with St.Peter, and the gate-keeper told him that he needed to straighten his evil deeds.
Now, he is reading a Bible. He believed his wife’s story of Mama Mary’s apparition in form of rose petals. Next thing we know, Fatsu is an ordained minister in his own religion.”The Benevolent Church of Pidalista” To be a member of his church, you must be a seven figures earner, 20 percent of the annual income must be donated to his church and tax-free.Iglesia ni Cristo,El Shaddai and Born Again Christian is only 10 percent.

    Ellen,
This is your article right?

    —–

The campaign is now on the home stretch and it’s getting hotter, politically, everyday. Even Pasay now counts one election-related killing, but people aren’t buying the yarn the camp of Connie Dy is spinning that this is the handiwork of Trinidad’s camp. Peewee is not known as a violent man and is not capable of murdering a mere follower of his opponents. It is not worth it.

He should know, the last election-related murder in Pasay was in the Martial Law era, the shooting victim was his own uncle, Miling Bayona, also father of suspended/reelectionist councilor, Pareng Onie.

Just like all of Gloria’s candidates, Connie Dy and Allan Panaligan’s mayoralty and congressional bids, respectively, are surely headed for doom. That’s one character that Pasay voters are noted for.

If it’s any interest, Pasay has been predictively voting as one within the Marcos-loyalist fence, or until recently, what now remains of it. Along with Kalookan, only Pasay voted unlike all of the cities and municipalities of Metro Manila and gave Marcos a landslide victory against Cory in 1986.

The next election, main protagonists Ramos, Mitra, and Miriam were too anti-Marcos for comfort that Pasay voted overwhelmingly for Danding, and a close second was Imelda.

In 1998, De Venecia has conceded Pasay to Estrada even before polling took place.

In 2004, FPJ’s win over Gloria in Pasay was bloody murder.

This year, it’s the same thing – TUTA candidates will all be hugging the tail end of the field. If there’s any city that’s capable of GO-ing 11-0, it’s Pasay.

What we’re more concerned with really is the cheating that is expected to happen now that all the elected officers have been suspended and replaced.

Cheating is the only purpose behind these removals and we are all set to frustrate Gloria’s well-oiled machinery. The PPCRV here is headed by the Bishop. Other benevolent NGOs feel safer here than anywhere else. Even the teachers feel more secure here than the whole of the Philippines. But that won’t make us fall complacent and we are telling that to the voters.

What we’ve been telling the people is, “Tapos na ang laban, panalo na tayo. Kailangan na lang siguruhing hindi tayo ma-gaGarci.”

Hindi dapat dinadala ang mga TUTA sa munisipyo, sa kongreso, o sa Senado. Dapat ikinakadena o ikinukulong! Itodo na ninyo, GO! GO! GO!

You’re funny,Cocoy! Pero type ko ang “The Benevolent Church of Pidalista!” Dapat na talagang putulan ng …si Pidal! Nag-hahallucinate na, eh! My foot, isinasama pa si St. Peter! Anong akala niya sa sarili niya, Santo-Demonyo?

  55. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Anti-Christ ba ang Benevolent Church of Pidalista?

  56. Tongue, yes that’s my article with additional input from Malaya’s defense reporter Victor Reyes.

All members of media have access to Sonny now. Permission from the court lang kailangan. Today, some members of media will be coming along with San Juan Mayor JV Ejercito when he visits Sonny.

Tonight, Sonny will be in Strictly Politics, ANC, 8 pm.

Tomorrow, I think, the whole Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) will have their session with him.

    Marami rin siyang radio interviews.

I hope that would help in making people aware of his candidacy and will vote fot him. He is a good person.

  57. TonGuE-tWisTeD TonGuE-tWisTeD

True, Ellen. I am aware of Sonny’s goodness and unadulterated idealism. It’s frustrating, however, when the evil ones are lording it over in the paid ads department. We are still campaigning for him even without his materials, many of those we hand out are home-made donations.

Like iron-on T-shirt transfers of his name with the Magdalo flag which is a big hit with the young voters, tricycle drivers, vendors, and masa in general. They iron it on t-shirts, baseball caps, pants. Its commonly pressed on fatigue shorts. It’s cheap and fashionable, too! (Many in Peewee’s caravan were wearing our transfers.)

Didn’t he mention what happened to Jamby Madrigal’s pledge of support? Will it be financial/logistic? Or Dagdag-bawas, heheh?

I hope the interviews will prop awareness of Sonny. He is now within striking distance of the lead pack, Thanks to the media, and all those who are making this very difficult campaign turn positive results, this is what candidates like Trillanes needs. I hope we can prove to everyone that it is not only money and cheating that can win an election.

Genuine volunteerism could and should slay the dragons of patronage and moneypolitics.

“Hindi dapat dinadala ang mga TUTA sa munisipyo, sa kongreso, o sa Senado. Dapat ikinakadena o ikinukulong! Itodo na ninyo, GO! GO! GO!”

GO! GO! GO! Trillanes, todo-todo na rin kami!

  59. cocoy cocoy

  61. ADB, Gloria Arroyo is also going to Vatican for the cannonization of the founder of the Assumption order.June 2 yata. so its Tokyo, New Zealand, Australia, Vatican in one trip. I’m not sure of the order.

  62. Mrivera Mrivera

  63. Mrivera Mrivera

chiz (not our dear chi here, huh?),

GO! GO! GO! Trillanes, ikaw na lang ang natitirang totoo!

  66. rose rose

In the process of cannonization, there should be testimonies of miracles that were received through the intercession of the Beatified. I hope hindi gagawa ng milagro at magsalita (being a President of country kahit daya) at sabihin na milagro ang pagkakapresidente niya.
may doctorate pa. I wonder if Loren will attend as well..

  67. kitamokitako kitamokitako

  68. I would resist the temptation to blast the GO candidates if I were you, guys, unless you are sure of what you are saying. This is one reason why I would rather admonish the Filipinos to heed the counsel of Binay that they make this election a referendum on GMA and her cahoots in decriminalizing graft and corruption and making their criminal activities normal and standard in the Philippines.

The temptation may be strong, and Sonny Trillanes should thank his lucky star and the Lord that he has gone this far—I am told that voters in the Philippines are getting to know him better.

That is good because the counts at home still count with the OFW votes not really enough to be counted with a oot many of the less than 500,000 overseas Filipinos registered disenfranchised and a lot many disappointed with the result of the 2004 election no matter how much Abalos and Company try to cheat for his benefactor.

Time to put in the heads of Filipinos that Trillanes is proving something. If he wins, it is proof that Filipinos have matured politically, and with their concerted and reborn (not renewed) efforts, they can now lick the oligarchs who have held the Filipinos by the neck with their craps. Sonny will also be able to prove that election campaigns need not be too costly. The people can do the campaign and spending on their own for their favorite candidates, and just think of nothing but put up someone who can work and serve the interests, and tackle the jobs they have the duties and responsibilities to perform.

When Sonny Trillanes, for me, it is proof indeed that “When there is a will, there is a way,” and this time it is even God’s Will and Trillanes desire to do as God has willed it.

Really, Ellen, I could not help a tear or two when I read what you wrote about Sonny’s conviction and faith in the Lord above despite his present trial and tribulation. This young lad really has the potential to be a great president of a great nation.

And as Trillanes has stated, the Philippines will become better by removing Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Menace!

  69. Mrivera Mrivera

    kitamokitako,

read and it and felt relieved. huwag lang sanang pa-come on lang ito ni chiz at pagtatakip sa kanyang ginawang pag-i-endorse kay honasan na ikinadismaya ng ibang sumusuporta sa kanya (escudero).

start again believing in chiz’s stand.
