Gringo won’t join Cavaliers’ Club at Senate

by Christina Mendez
The Philippine Star

Sen. Gregorio Honasan has rejected the invitation of his Philippine Military Academy classmate, Sen. Panfilo Lacson, to form the so-called Cavaliers’ Club composed of four PMA alumni who were elected senators.

Honasan said that as an independent senator, he would work for a Senate that would push for measures that are good for the country rather than push for the personal interests of some people.

“We cannot afford to chop up a small chamber like the Senate into smaller groupings. The Cavaliers Club existed even before it was called a Cavaliers Club,” he said in an interview.

Honasan’s statement was an apparent rejection of the moves of Lacson to form the Cavaliers Club at the Senate to include himself, Honasan (both members of PMA 1971), Rodolfo Biazon (PMA 1961), and newly elected senator former Navy Lt. Senior Grade Antonio Trillanes IV (PMA 1995).

Lacson envisions the Cavaliers Club to act as a voting bloc similar to the Wednesday Group composed of Senators Joker Arroyo, Manuel Villar Jr. and Francis Pangilinan.

The fourth member of the Wednesday Group, re-electionist Sen. Ralph Recto lost in the May 14 elections. Another member of the group, former senator and now Vice President Noli de Castro remains active in the social gatherings of the group.

Honasan said he believes that the new composition of 23 senators should be working as one behind a national agenda to respond to the real problems of the country.

Shortly after taking his oath of office before Chief Justice Reynato Puno at the Supreme Court, Honasan said he sees a more independent type of Senate once the 14th Congress convenes on July 23.

“I also expect an independent Senate not necessarily opposition, not necessarily influenced by the administration, not one which is independent to respond to our real problems,” said Honasan, who also debunked reports that he has forged a deal with the Arroyo administration which was seen as a major reason why the coup d’état charges, recommended to be filed against him by government prosecutors, were recently dismissed by the Department of Justice.

Honasan is also not keen on supporting the effort of Biazon and other opposition senators to work for the temporary release of Trillanes from his detention at the Fort Bonifacio detention cell to allow the rebel officer who led the so-called Oakwood mutiny in Makati City in 2003, to attend Senate sessions.

Honasan said it is up to the courts to decide on the Trillanes case, an opinion shared by Honasan and Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile.

Shortly after the elections, Lacson initiated the creation of the Cavaliers Club.

“I think this is the first time that there are four (PMAers) all in the Senate. We are planning to form the Cavaliers Club. After all, we speak the same language. So it is easy for us to jell, the four of us,” Lacson said in an interview last June 7.

In the history of the Senate, the other PMA graduates who became senators were Ruperto Kangleon (PMA Class of 1916) and one Eulogio Balao, who was a defense secretary before becoming a lawmaker.

Lacson had also tried to talk to Trillanes about the possibility of all four PMAers to form the group to pursue common advocacies for the good of the Senate and not to be obstructionist.

Asked to react about the emerging group, re-elected Sen. Joker Arroyo seemed nonchalant but sarcastic: “A Senate with a military mind, so that’s good.”

much better if they leave him alone as he likes. honasan may want to prove that he can do everything all by himself.

anyway, his plebe days were long been over and he’s in his twilight years but still not sure where he is really heading to.

Lacson, Biazon and Trillanes are better off not having Honasan (Huhudasin lang sila)with them. Let him have nobody in his side. It is Honasan’s lost! Nakakahawa yong sakit niya–

  4. rose rose

  9. “Gringo won’t join Cavaliers’ Club at Senate”
Thats good news for Biazon, Lacson, and Trillanes because it saves them the problem of inviting this ‘blinky & side to side eyes’ non commital loser to join them. If Honasan was to be part of this group he wouldn’t be able to join their loud noises against the she devil he sold his soul to for his FREEDOM..

I told you so!

Mataas kasi ang standard ko especially when I have lots of comparison or can compare this crook with.

Despite Oakwood that he did for justice and truth, hindi siya masiraan talaga ng mga kurakot!

Adulterer and fornicator in fact does not have a place in my list. Fornicator ang taong iyan. Sabi nga ng isang kaibigan ko, kaibigan niya ang kabit ni Hudasan na kasama niya when “he was caught with his pants down!”

Kung ang mga pilipino will based their choice to vote on the basis of morality, I bet you, hindi nila iboboto ang karamihan sa mga ibinoto nila in this election. Sabi nga ng Congressman I saw when I was a kid, “Baka pag tinanggal ninyo ako, maubos lahat ang tao dito because I can pinpoint the others having “kabits,” too!!! Ganoon katindi ang lack of morality ng mga ibinoboto ng mga pilipino!

I know for a fact, though, that Senator Pimentel is faithful to his wife, Bing. Kaya saludo ako sa tatay ni Koko! I know Koko is faithful to his wife, too.

This should read, “Kung ang mga pilipino will base…”

  12. Sampot:

When he likes something that you ask him to do, he actually makes sure to push it through. May potential talaga. I just cannot understand why he has to align himself with an idiotic criminal he knows very well to be a deterrent to Philippine progress unless, of course, he himself has become an idiot, too!!! Kawawa naman.

  13. So what if Hudasan does not join the Cavaliers. Pampagulo lang naman siya, pasabit-sabit lang! I have never been a fan of this adulterer as a matter of fact.

  14. Valdemar Valdemar

Divide and rule seems the battle doctrine of the powers in being. They lost the senate election but they are winning over the senators-elect. If Villar was a sleeper embedded with the opposition, it wont matter much because anytime there can be a lose of confidence vote. Honasan is not with the opposition ticket anyway. Honasan has a clear case of the stockholm syndrome. But Villar has more presence of mind than Honasan to be swayed into the administration fold. Remember that he sought to be with the opposition in the first place by visiting Tanay. So nothing much to worry yet.

  15. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Gregorio Honasan the adulterer can not be trusted at all.

  16. parasabayan parasabayan

The opposition senators who won and who seem to be quiet right now do not mean they have aligned with the tiyanak. On the contrary, silence is golden. If one makes too much noise, he/she can become an easy target. It is best that they position themselves where they should be then do the unthinkable! Villar has to play it very safe. He knows that if he aligns with the tiyanak, it will spell the death of his pesidential dream. If he shows some flexibility, he may get more stuff done for the people. Tiyanak is known to be extremely vindictive! These senators should know by now how to align with the right forces. Just like the tiyanak, they too know how to play the poker game. A player never shows his cards and just goes for the killing.

Honasan is a helpless senator right now. Hawak siya sa balls ni tiyanak. He still has the rebellion charges against him and the only reason he is out is because he made a pact with the devil! He can not openly defy the tiyanak now otherwise balik siya sa kulungan. Maybe the people who voted him into office know that in his heart, Honasan may eventually redeem himself. Time will tell how all these allegiances of the senators will play. It is too early to pre-judge any of them at this time. Too early.

  17. parasabayan parasabayan

So Ebdame was relieved! He did not do a successful cheating operations in the May elections. The opposition got most of the seats in the Senate! So, tanggal siya ngayon! Nagbantay kasi ang mga taong bayan. The most the vultures could do is to at least get Ate Migz in. That is what the dinner was all about between Abalaos and Chubiri’s family! The pay off for his win must be pretty hefty! Pay off coming from Chubiri’s family, the interest groups( if these groups know that Chubiri can be paid off for a bill to be passed for them) and of course the tiyanak! Chubiri’s win will mean more votes in favor of the tiyanak!

  18. rose rose

After meeting with her before the elections- he is now under the palda of Gloria. Ano ang mayroon si GMA? Draw your own conclusion.

    Correction: “its Honasan’s loss.

  20. Villar? I’m not impressed. Opportunist din iyan, and hindi magandang kaibigan. Kung hindi siya makikinabang, mag-iiwan iyan. As the old adage says, “True friends are those who stick through thick and thin.” I have not seen this in this guy.

Pinaasa iyong mga GO na sasama siya pero umalis, not really because he was fricked by his conscience, kundi may nagsabi sigurong gumaya siya kay Hudasan who would run independent kuno pero reportedly financed ni unano

    I am not impressed. Yuck!

  21. Elvira Sahara Elvira Sahara

The three PMA’ers would be better off without Hudas-an! He thinks that he is the greatest! Tama na ang mga illusions! He hasn’t done anything except to lean on his masters!!!
Never akong na-impressed sa kanya! Deadma ka lang, Dong!

  22. rose rose

Yuko: Hi! Ano ang sakit ni Hudasan- VD? Very Demonic? His being independent would be lose-lose.

  23. At least, Senator Trillanes is living up to the original tradition of PMA, for which the military academy gained its good reputation of old. Problem is because of these mistahs from the rotten government have contributed to what the academy has become and will be know from this time forward, a breeding ground for crooks and wannabe criminals like these military men involved in these extrajudicial killings to make sure that Gloria unano remains at the palace by the murky river forever.

  24. Oops, something is wrong with my automatic corrector. This should read: Problem is THAT because of these mistahs from the rotten government, WHO have contributed to what the academy has become and will be KNOWN from this time forward, THE PMA HAS APPARENTLY BECOME a breeding ground for crooks and wannabe criminals like these military men involved in these extrajudicial killings to make sure that Gloria unano remains at the palace by the murky river forever AS THEY BENEFIT FROM IT.

I guess this is the reason why they would not want Filipinos to get to see the Erap’s movie “To Live for the Masses.” Some video clips there will be good evidences against these military people who helped the unano grab power. She called them as her boyfriends!!!

  25. Rose,

VD–very demonic! Yehey! Tama ka! It was more or less STD like the one that afflicted Kris Aquino previously!!!

Will a Greg Honasan even enhance the so-called “Cavaliers’ Club at the Senate” ? Not by a mile. Actually, Greg Honasan’s presence alone will make the group shady. Honasan is, to me, a far mile BELOW a Senator Trillanes in terms of reputation. Senator Trallanes withdrew his support from Gloria in Oakwood. Honasan staged coup d’etats during President Aquino’s time. There’s a hell of a difference.

Maybe Honasan is jealous of Senator Trillanes.

  32. Chabeli: Maybe Honasan is jealous of Senator Trillanes.

What comes to mind reading the piece on Honasan:

“Honasan said that as an independent senator, he would work for a Senate that would push for measures that are good for the country rather than push for the personal interests of some people.”

Me thinks: There’s nothing there, that’s what everybody is saying and that’s what the people expect of him. Unless, he think he and the other senators might be so dumb and dumber to pass laws granting themselves more millions (they already have P200 million? As slush funds). Sobrang greedy na yan.

    More on honasan

“We cannot afford to chop up a small chamber like the Senate into smaller groupings. The Cavaliers Club existed even before it was called a Cavaliers Club,” he said in an interview.

Me thinks: Oh Yeah, the Senate since it inception had already been chopped to numerous committees to advanced the interest of all senators. Smaller groups, my foot! Never heard of division of labor as a classical pillar of scientific management?, even division of spoils? Ever heard of Thursday club? Cavaliers Club registered In Social Security Administration like the Old Boys club? Formal (committees) and informal (factions, cliques) structures inheres in any live organization. Theoretically, informal groups are the likely villains in most organization malfunction. In the senate, this theory is hogwash. It’s the formal group (and in plenary ), what it does and fails to do, that’s wrecking it role and mission as Congress’ august body of wisdom and integrity. So in desperation, others are thinking that a cavaliers group might undercut the whole’s monkey business. A tail (cavaliers) wagging the dog (the senate). Not on your life Mistah!

  36. jay cynikho jay cynikho

“Honasan said he believes that the new composition of 23 senators should be working as one behind a national agenda to respond to the real problems of the country.”

“I also expect an independent Senate not necessarily opposition, not necessarily influenced by the administration, not one which is independent to respond to our real problems,”

Me thinks: Senate working as one? That’s Stalinesque, or Hitlers Reichtag. Examine the Senate’s performance in the Commission on Appointments and the bicameral committee on Appropriations (Annual Budget), and the investigation of the Blue Ribbon Committee. Never has the Senate has worked
As one for Gloria. What is Honasan talking about? The Senate is one for Gloria in Fiscal Mismanagement and the appointments of key bureaucrats.

Me thinks: Nice words, but who sets the national agenda, who else but Gloria. No one really knows the senate was responding to unreal problems all these years. Read that again: “not one which is independent to respond to our real problems,” well said but conflictive, indeed. To be kind, not should read but, to claim misquotation.

  37. jay cynikho jay cynikho

Me thinks: Honasan showed up in Oakwood. That one is a good opportunity. Standing up for Trillanes now is not opportunity at all. It doesn’t need brains to know opportunity, to be an opportunist.

Honasan said it is up to the courts to decide on the Trillanes case, an opinion shared by Honasan and Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile.

Me thinks: Any uneducated prisoner in Munti, or San Ramon, or Iwahig know they can not trust Philippine courts. It takes lots of education to be an ignoramus, to be a lawmaker to know that the courts will see it their way of justice.

  38. jay cynikho jay cynikho

In the history of the Senate, the other PMA graduates who became senators were Ruperto Kangleon (PMA Class of 1916) and one Eulogio Balao, who was a defense secretary before becoming a lawmaker.

Me thinks: These guys knew that during their time water will seek its own level if need be. They were so busy doing their senate duties so not to waste time yaking and yakking what’s democratic essence anyway. Interest articulation does not happen in Stalin’s or Hitler’s time or even gloria’s time where if your group articulate the country’s interest as journalist or activist, you’re as good as dead.

My conclusion: if the whole senate seems inutil against gloria’s misgovernance and maladministration; small groups will only succeed in getting more largesse from Gloria. Honasan is right Small senate group is not likely to serve the People’s interests. Any graduate of Harry Potter’s school in Tolkien’s Middle Earth can see that.

Much ado about nothing (the Cavaliers) :

Asked to react about the emerging group, re-elected Sen. Joker Arroyo seemed nonchalant but sarcastic: “A Senate with a military mind, so that’s good.”

Me thinks: Without putting words into the lips of Joke Arroyo, he was not really being sarcastic. No. Sir, how nice it will be if his comrades in Gloria’s administration will be military-minded like Generals Ermita, Esperon, Ebdane, Mendoza, Dolorfino, Palparan, Calderon, etc as example members of a Senate. As senator, Joke Arroyo doesn’t need to face them as a human rights defender. He now works on their side, gloria’s administration. If only all these generals will be senators: “A Senate with a military mind, so that’s good.”

Me thinks: If he is thinking of Lacson and Biazon, and even Trillanes, he is not really being sarcastic, but disgusted and condescending but being a PATRIOT. Who likes pain in the neck or in the rectum? Military minds developed by training are estimate-of-the-situation junkies, objective-driven, canalized and single tracked, unwavering, uncompromising, undistracted, relentless; so opposite to legal minds which are malleable, rationale, persuasive, devious, insidious and respect seeking. Lacson’s previous senate activities and Biazon’s Marines-stance to do something if he gets cheated in his last senate candidacy, and Trillanes resolve to correct wrongs and injustices done by Gloria if they do have military minds I have just defined, the Joker has spoken as a patriot hoping for gloria’s comeuppance when he said: “A Senate with a military mind, so that’s good.” May be he is wishing for more of Lacson and company.

My conclusion: Military mind (relentless, death defying, undistracted) that is greedy is never good for a country. I know so little of Lacson, Biazon, and Trillanes about their greed so I say for now, Joker Arroyo has reasons to be annoyed.
