Offended

Following is Noel de la Fuente reaction to my column last Friday “Convenient diversion”:
Dear Ms. Tordesillas:

Thank you for understanding the outrage of Filipino-Americans over the racist remarks of Teri Hatcher in the TV show Desperate Housewives. For those who are not yet aware of this, here are the offensive remarks:

“. . . Mayer (Teri Hatcher) asked for the credentials of the gynecologist who examined
her . . . She said, `Can I check those diplomas ‘coz I just want to make sure they’re
not from some med school in the Philippines.'”

These remarks must be condemned by all Filipinos. Its clear implication is that Filipinos are cheaters and must not be trusted. It is demeaning to all Filipino doctors who are all highly qualified to practice their profession in the United States as well as in other countries. Granting for the sake of argument that there are Filipinos practicing medicine in the United States who are not qualified. Logic demands that some of the blame must also be attached
to the U.S. systems and procedures for hiring doctors from the Philippines.

The Daily Tribune 10/06/2007 editorial, The truth hurts, asked, “Why would that remark even be made if there was never a hint of some cheating in the Philippine nursing exams?”

Asking this question is bad timing as well as in poor taste. First, this has the effect of confirming that it is justifiable to attack the honesty, integrity and the professional qualifications of Filipino doctors because a few nursing school graduates cheated on their board exams. This is an example of condemning the whole for the transgression of a few. Furthermore, no Filipino doctors cheated on that exam. Let me remind everyone that Filipino doctors undergo rigorous testing and continuing education to be able to practice medicine in the United States. Secondly, we must unite against anyone who attack Filipinos. Any manifestation of disunity among Filipinos is used by others to attack us. It is very much easier to attack any race who is not united and, therefore, can be treated as helpless weaklings who can be ridiculed, demeaned, disrespected, discriminated against with impunity and not be able to fight back.

If we are outraged by racial slurs and attacks impugning the honesty and integrity of the Filipinos by other nationalities, we must be equally outraged when the attack comes from another Filipino. I am referring to the remarks of your regular blog discussant, Anna, about this, as follows:

“. . . . our friends in the US (sic) to do the same thing about the NBN corruption deal —
I wanna see them in the same fighting mood! Then I believe they are patriots, otherwise,
no dice! (They’re merely feeling slighted coz their li’l amor propio has been a li’l bruised
. . .)”

First of all, Anna is not our friend. She has no right to insult and judge Filipino-Americans.
We don’t care if she does not believe our motivation for expressing our outrage against Teri Hatcher’s remarks. But, I can not let this pass. Not challenging her reprehensible remarks can cause further dissension among Filipinos. She is perpetrating the colonial mentality of dividing the Filipinos. In fact, she must be a Filipino hater. And I am inclined to believe that she was manifesting her self-loathing. This was just her way of attempting to validate herself at the expense of Filipino-Americans. She failed miserably. What did Anna do for the Filipinos that made her a patriot?

Filipino-Americans opted for the individual solution when they came to the United States.
By force of necessity, we sought for better educational and economic opportunities in the United States. These were not available to many of us in the Philippines If we stayed there,
we would most probably be unemployed, poor, hungry and unable to help anyone. For some people, this move made us unpatriotic. All Filipinos should know that this is not true. We continue to help our relatives and friends in the Philippines. We continue to be concerned about what is happening in the Philippines. There are Filipino men and women here in their late sixties and mid-seventies who are working as janitors to support and help their relatives in the Philippines. Although an honest way to make a living, it is hard work specially when they have to work 16 hours a day to be able to send money to the Philippines. These Filipinos are glad to be able to work despite the difficulties. They said it is better here because they are able to help Filipinos there. And they are assured of a pension and health care when they eventually retire.

Filipino-Americans send money and consumer goods to the Philippines continuously. Our proof is the proliferation of money changers and freight forwarders serving the Filipino community in the U.S. LBC is one of the biggest. PERA (Philippine Express Remittance
and Allied Services) is another. Through them, we send Balikbayan boxes full of food and other consumer goods to the Philippines. Through them, we also send money to pay
for expenses such as costs of education (tuition, books, lab fees, uniforms etc.), medicines (even anti-rabies vaccines), hospital confinements, burials, down-payment on a house, home and vehicle repairs, capital to start a small business, to pay existing debts, etc. There is a great value to this for the recipients and for the Philippine economy. This also provides employment and income on both ends — here and in the Philippines.

I must mention also that many Filipino-American doctors go back to the Philippines to provide medical treatment free of charge. One of these doctors is my heart surgeon,
Dr. Alexander Yap. He goes to the Philippines accompanied by American doctors to treat patients there. Dr. Yap is an excellent and highly regarded heart surgeon in the U.S. and in the Philippines. It was reported that he was called as a consulting surgeon when First Gentleman Miguel Arroyo had open heart surgery. Some people who are against Mike Arroyo might criticize Dr. Yap. Everyone must bear in mind that Dr. Yap and all doctors are devoted to treating the sick and saving lives. This is the first and foremost priority of Dr. Yap and all doctors rather than politics.

Filipino-Americans protest and express their dissent against anomalies and injustice here, including those that are happening in the Philippines. Anyone who says we don’t is ignorant and a liar.

Not now and not in any other time it is right to unjustly attack Filipino-Americans. There
is no sense to it. It will only alienate us. And for what? For our enemies to succeed in further dividing us so they can continue to exploit and treat us badly? Let us follow the
examples of other nationalities who recognize and appreciate the help they receive from those who immigrated to other countries such as the Jewish-Americans, Japanese-Americans, Korean-Americans, Chinese-Americans and other nationalities. Therein lies their continuing unity and strength in fighting a common enemy. This also assures them of continuing help and support from their expatriates. Can Filipinos not do that?

We are very much concerned and distressed over the newspaper accounts of killings, graft and corruption, exploitation of Filipino workers in their own country and other anomalies in the Philippines. The hope that we see towards the eradication of these anomalies is the
bravery and militancy of the Filipino journalists who exposed them. I have expressed my support for them and my concern for their personal safety. I wrote to you, Ms. Tordesillas, about this. I also wrote to your fellow journalist: Lito Banayo, JB Baylon, Dahli Aspillera, Ronald Roy and Rod Kapunan.

I hope that this letter helps in promoting unity among Filipinos everywhere and in
condemning anyone who attacks and divides us. All Filipinos must be united, wherever they are. If we remain divided, other people will continue to discount and exploit Filipinos.

I would like to request that you publish this letter in full, either in your column or as a letter to the Editor of Malaya.

Sincerely,

Noel de la Fuente

Ellen, nowhere did I see any word from Mr. dela Fuente about the fake president of the country and all ills she has done, and is continuing to do. I wonder if Mr. dela Fuente is only concerned about a particular issue, and has his eyes closed on the more urgent ones.

  2. Mr. de la Fuente missed the point of your earlier column. No one is complaining that Filipino Americans are protesting against that TV show. In fact, they really should.

The point of the original post is that the remarks made by a TV character is not that big of a problem for the government to be involved. WTF!

  3. I watched the video clip again, and it was more in fact directed to the problem of fake nurses in the Philippines that I agree with a lot many of my friends that this Malacanang instigated protest is just to deviate attention to the more vital issues, even the issue of issuing fake diplomas and cheating in the nursing and even medical board exams.

I asked my sister, who is likewise a doctor but no longer practicing, how she felt about the “slur,” and she said, “Why should I sign that petition if it is only meant to save the fake president of the Philippines? Anyway, nobody doubted my own credential as a doctor because I was and still am a good doctor!”

My sister, BTW, got her diploma from UST, and passed the medical board in the 70’s. Panahon ni Macoy. At least, for all the bad propaganda about Marcos, none allure to all these rampant cheatings that have become a trademark of GLORC!

  4. I challenge Noel dela Fuente to make similar letter for unity of Filipinos against the GLORC! This I will sign, and will ask all my Filipino friends to sign it as well.

I agree that the dela Fuentes of the Philippines should protest and make known what bothers their sensitivities. It’s part of our freedoms. As personal preference though, I would rather see such “hurt feelings” when we see government officials stealing money or even votes!

On slurs like these, I prefer to let them slide! That’s just me though.

I dissent your opinion Mr.Dela Fuente about your pipe dreams in uniting Filipinos in America. If you are living in California you may agree with me about the Pinoy culture that were stuck in the luggage from Manila. There is an adjacent city in LA where mostly Filipino population. They elected a Filipino mayor, that former mayor is serving time in jail for graft and corruption, according to some hearsay he is also practicing attorney which he was not. It was his fellow pinoy who blew the whistle on him. Now, pinoy in that city are running each other throat for a political seat, mudslinging ,character assassination and so on during election time. They are not united, a lot of pinoy gunning for mayor; after counting of vote it was not pinoy who garnered the highest vote and elected as their mayor. In that city pinoy fastfood restaurant are also competing each other, same as Medical and Dental clinic.

Have you ever hear about fake social security card and green card for sale in California? Pinoy TNT’s were mostly the customer of that illegal activities. Did you also notice why pinoy don’t want to hire pinoy lawyers to be their counsel? Mr.Dela Fuente that is the reality,no smoke coming from your pipe dreams Amigo!

If Anna is our own AdeBrux here, I hope she responds to the above letter. I presume most if not all members of this blog are patriotic and pro-Filipino even if they are based abroad.

Not agreeing on an issue doesn’t make one less patriotic. One can get hurt by the slur but at the same time look at it in an objective way. Let’s ask ourselves if there’s some truth in it. Why did they make such a remark? Certainly, they have heard of fake diplomas and other documents being manufactured in the Philippines. That nursing exam cheating could also still be fresh in their mind. They might have heard about the cheating in the media; and so came out with that remark in the show.

We should condemn what they did, but I think we should not over react. How do we describe a true Filipino? If a Filipino disagrees about an issue does that makes him less Filipino?

Cocoy, do you know who introduced the fake driver licenses and social security cards in the US? Do you know who started the rental car scam? Do you know who started the credit card scam? Do you know who started the pyramid scam? I regret to say that those were introduced by Pinoys. The Mexicans and other nationalities learned the business from our own Filipinos. Let’s not be onion-skinned.

Mr. de la Fuente, I wish you luck in your endeavor to unite Filipinos here in USA. But you are dreaming an impossible dream. But the reality is, many Filipinos don’t have the national pride that many of our Asian neighbors have. Here in Jersey City, we had a chance of having a councilor but during the run off, instead of voting for the Filipino candidate- many did not. A Filipino deputy mayor was found guilty of asking a “fee” for marrying couples. The news was a headline in the Jersey Journal for a couple of days..
Here in JC, women from India, Pakistan, Korea wear their native costume..kahit winter. Many Filipinos..don’t even have a “barong tagalog” or a “kimona”. I would excuse the ternos, or the balintawak..but a “kimona”? they are not expensive..I often wear a kimona at church events or in parties, where there are many non Filipinos and they like our native dress..It is tragic but many do not have the national pride in them..nawala na ang “Ako ay Filipino”.

    pechanco;
If Mr.dela Fuente want to see a real Filipino unity,I suggest that he’ll become a permanent residence of Ellenville.

    rose;

Addendum: A couple of years ago, two Filipino brothers were charged and found guilty for killing a policeman. A few of my office mates made references to the two Filipinos as “good hitters” thus the Mets or Yankees should hire them. In response I told them that Agbayani of the Mets who was a good player is a Filipino.
It is tragic Mr. de la Fuente, that we get this reputation but what is GMA doing? When I saw, three center rows in the orchestra occupied by GMA and her friends, in Les Miserables I felt anger inside me..at $100 a ticket..it cost a fortune..and to see limousines outside waiting for her party to come out it burned me up..wala man lang nagprotesta..we were taken aback to know later that she was there. So, Mr. de la Fuente, there went the people’s money. The Filipinos were made “miserables”.

  12. Rose,

I still have to hear Japanese protesting against any comments made by Americans on Americans of Japanese descent. There was a strong protest against the attempt by some US reporters to scandalize for example the Crown Princess when they made emphasis of how the old imperial system has contributed to her psychological problems, but there was no national uproar about it.

There is truth in the problem being exposed in that little statement, so why would I felt slighted by it versus the writer. I’d rather use it to gather signatures in fact to petition this administration to correct that image rather than jump on its bandwagon to deviate the attention on the real issues, including the cheating in some nursing board exam, and even in the medical board exams that we have long heard of but never exposed or corrected.

Lack of patriotism if you do not protest against this truth they call “a slur”? Who says they have that?

BTW, I’d rather the first generation immigrants call themselves “Filipinos” than Fil-Ams. Otherwise, sabihin na lang “US citizens” sila! OK iyong mga pamangkin kong born and raised in the US with Filipino fathers. Puede nilang sabihing “Fil-Am” sila!

  13. My mother got her US citizenship on my prodding twenty years ago after agonizing on whether or not to give up her Philippine nationality. Still, she calls herself, and proud to say (may kasama pang kanta) “Ako ay Pilipino!” But she is not signing the petition instigated by Malacanang, this dela Fuente, et al!

She’s a grandniece of the Luna brothers as a matter of fact. Her father was a KKK and her brother gave up his life for his country in WWII. Kaya sinong may sabing hindi ka patriotic if you don’t sign this GLORC petition?

  14. …why would I FEEL slighted by it versus the writer?….

  16. This reminds me of the petition we have published on cyberspace for instance for the boy who was killed by police in Canada. Pahirapan pa ang papirma sa totoo lang. That, I thought, needed more sympathy from fellow Filipinos. I actually posted it in my blog.

Ang daming pilipino for instance, walang Philippine town. Sa SFO, may Chinatown, sa LA may Little Tokyo. Little Manila wala!

Patriotic, my ass!

Mr.Dela Fuente,to me there is no derogatory remarks in here because she said “I just want to make sure they’re not from some med school in the Philippines”the keyword is “SOME” Mon Ami! The reality there are some medical school in the Philippines that are below standard. I don’t blamed Teri if she want to make sure that the doctor come from prestigious medical school in the Philippines. You see,Pinoys are hot-headed without reading and understanding the message first. They jump to a conclusion and assume.ASSUME my friend is an ASS between U and ME.

  19. pechanco pechanco

Cocoy, I partly agree with you. The only thing I’m protesting is why pick the Philippines as a country and not others like Mexico and India?

Sobra namang ado for some trivial matters.

I’d like to agree with martina’s observation. This entire “slur” thing was blown up to such a proportion to divert people’s attention from the true issues of the country.

    Pechanco;
Know,Why Pinas? The nursing cheating controversies overblown the news proportion in the US.In fact US don’t want to risk the health care system on that nursing batch, they refused to hire them. Also, the integrity of NCLEX need to be protected. I guess the message on this DH is for the Phil.gov’t to have some integrity and excellence standard for medical profession who want to come and work in America. Now, do you think who can afford to come and work in America? Iyon lang maykayang maglagay.Kaya iyong matatalinong doctor ay naiiwanan kasi wala silang pangastos at panglagay.

nakakatawa itong si mr dela fuente, masyado niyang dinidibdib iyong comment na iyon ni ms thatcher. those are joke and even us here we said joke about bush, clinton and others, but the american knows when to laugh and when to be serious. those joke of ms thatcher is no big deal among us filipinos here.na alala ko tuloy si manong jonhny enrile ng mag privilege speech sa sanado condeming the chocolate na brown sa labas at white sa loob na ang pngalan ay filipino.nationalistic daw siya at kanyang pinagsasabihan iyong gumagawa. wala ding nangyari, hangang ngayon iyon pa din ang pangalan noon.the issue here is the lying, cheating of those in the goverment.the one pretending to be the leader of the filipinos and her minions who cheat and protect her illegally, this evil people in the goverment is the mirror they see on us..mr dela fuente don`t be onion skin, if ms thatcher said those words in jokingly manner, blame it to GMA and her evil minions.for they are all the cause of this mess and nightmare`s we are having now!!

    my letter to knadal@gmail.com:

    mr. nadal,

  28. Buti na lang hindi sinakyan ni Cory iyong ginawa a Comedy Central kasi mapapahiya siya dahil may disclaimer from the beginning pa. Masarap ang makumbida si unano sa programa niya kung matapang si unano tapos we ask Jon to interview her the he interviews other presidents he makes fun of, the last one iyong native Indian ng Bolivia who became president and says that he is doing exactly what Hugo Chavez has been doing in Venezuela.

  29. ….we ask Jon to interview her the way he interviews other presidents he makes fun of with our silly questions!….:-P

Dapat i-demand nila kay unano, not DH, na huwag kung sinu-sino na lang ang ibinubugaw sa ibang bansa, which is what the human trafficking export is all about.

To everyone who wish to participate.

I expected criticisms, but not personal attacks against me for expressing my opinion. I was labeled as only interested in one issue and a trival one at that. Someone implied that I am a “pakawala ny Malacanang” to divert from the real and more important isues against President Gloria Arroyo. That my advocacy of uniting the Filipinos in the United States is a pipe dream, etc.

I will not dignify these personal attacks against me by answering those who criticized me individually. Suffice it to say that they must reveal their full names and their email addresses publicly and not hide behind pseudonyms when they post their blogs. That is the right thing to do when someone is convinced that he or she is standing on personal conviction and principles in expressing his or her opinions.

Let me reiterate my main point. I am looking at the big picture. In my view, unity among Filipinos is a first priority. Without unity the Filipinos will never be empowered, whether they are living in the Philippines or elsewhere. At present, the Filipinos are not empowered, socially, politically and economically. Filipinos are at the mercy of powerful countries and entities. That is the reason why the Filipinos cannot throw out of office erring
public officials. That is also the reason why others do not hesitate to demean, ridicule and exploit us. We don’t have the clout and power to fight back.

It saddens me to be reminded that a few Filipinos think that the Filipinos can not achieve unity. I refuse to believe that. There will come a time (I hope that happens in my lifetime), that Filipinos will be united and empowered. And when that time comes, everyone will think hard and many many times before demeaning or exploiting us.
And when they dare to do that, Filipinos will be swift in fighting back. This is also the reason why I think that it is not the right time to bring out the transgressions of Filipinos. By airing our dirty linen in public, others will see our weakness and continue to attack us without hesitation and with impunity. Powerful countries can afford to air their dirty linen in public because they are coming from a position of strength. We can do the same when the Filipinos have achieved empowerment.

I have expressed my support and offered my suggestions in the possible solutions to the problems confronting the Philippines. I have written about these to journalists who deserve our support and respect for exposing anomalies in the Philippines. Ms. Tordesillas is one of them. These journalists serve as a beacon of hope that the Filipinos can solve and overcome their problems. These journalist must be recognized for their courage. They don’t even hide behind the word “alleged” when making their accusations against erring public officials.

    Sincerely,

    Noel de la Fuente

  32. cocoy cocoy

    Noel de la Fuente;
Correction Mi Amigo, on my outset, I did not attack you personally. I was just want to elaborate to you a reality that you can not and never will unite all the Filipinos. That is the reason I emphasized to you that no smoke coming from your pipe. Look at the present crisis in our political arena and let me open your eyes. People were united and more than 11 million living warm bodies voted for Trillanes. Now, tell me, Where is unity? Why NPA’s still exist? Why there is an ongoing conflict in Basilan? We are all Filipinos. If you can give me a convincing reason for all of this, maybe you can have my respect on your so called dream of unity.

I wonder!

Remember?

That for me was something that will cause a national uproar over here where I am based.

Enough of this DH slur daw! Mas importante ang batikos laban kay Neri!

  35. Sorry, I am not participating in this Malacanang-instigated pakulo. I will participate though if you, Mr. dela Fuente, will demand fair treatment for the nurses in the Sentrosa case and/or demand for Senator Trillanes to be able to serve his duties and responsibilities as a Senator.

BTW, we are calling on all concerned Filipinos in Japan to join us in this “PAGLINGKURIN SI SENATOR TRILLANES CAMPAIGN!”

We are tying this up with our campaign for stopping the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines plus fair treatment to all political prisoners including the few good men who are now political prisoners of this fake regime. You may send a letter to my blog.

  36. florry florry

    N de la Fuente,
Instead of fighting for the few, why not fight for the many and majority of the 85 million Filipinos who were cheated by gloria? Maybe after gloria Filipinos will finally be united. This is not the first time that slurs, insults or humiliation has been directed to Filipinos. You may have heard about a notice posted in an elevator in Hongkong prohibiting Filipinos and pets to take the elevator in going up the building. What is more demeaning than that? That’s a very clear case of racial discrimination, being banned with animals. That reminds one of the early days of America when blacks were restricted. Did you N de la Fuente raised your voice to protest this very offensive attack on the Filipino person. Maybe not so, because people restricted over there in Hongkong were the lowly nannies, care-givers and OFWs, and while in these case, they are professionals and they should be protected and defended. That only shows a very selective priority.

Noel de la Fuente, wqelcome to Ellensville.
I am encouraging you and your friends in the usa to make it a habit to visit us here in Ellensville so that you are able to understand how this country is in such low eateem and how a habitual Liar fails to recognise Justice, coninues to steal votes and from the treasury in a most corrupt manner.
I advise you and your riends in the usa read Filipino on-line newspapers such as The Daily Tribune who’s very quote today is an eye opener :-
“The hunger rate in the country has increased from 14.7 percent to 21.5 percent in the third quarter of this year.
This was confirmed by the National Nutrition Council (NCC) of the Department of Heath during a press briefing in Malacañang over the weekend.”
It also pointed out that unemployment rate increased from 7.4 percent in April to 7.8 percent in July based on latest data gleaned from the National Statistics Office.
Prices of galungong also increased in ten trading centers—Baguio City by P15.00 per kilo, Cabanuatuan City by P5.00 per kilo, Batangas City by P10.00 per kilo, Iloilo City by P10.00 per kilo, Cebu City by P10.00 per kilo, Zamboanga City by P5.00 per kilo, Davao City by P5.00 per kilo, Kidapawan City by P7.50 per kilo, and Butuan City by P10.00 per kilo.
In July, prices of dressed chicken went up by P20.00 per kilo in Metro Manila.
In August, prices of dressed chicken showed an upward trend in trading centers namely: Batangas City by P20.00 per kilo. Prices of cooking oil had also increased since July.

Sorry to hear you are upset about a med slur on Filipino,
we here are too busy starving from lack of food to care too much about, what is after all, the Truth.

  38. we-will-never-learn we-will-never-learn

And Mr Noel de la Fuente, be sure to tell your frinds that even very young 10 year old children are shot at blank point range whilst the AFP are attempting to catch a bunch of one hundred rag tag army of rebels – couldn’t make it up could you.

  39. broadbandido broadbandido

I totally agree that it is very hard to unite Filipinos since there are many who are not that patriotic and do not have the same sense of nationalism/pride of being Filipinos as our Asian neighbors.

  40. broadbandido broadbandido

A good example is looking at clubs and organizations. When an ambitious member is not elected president or leader of that group, he will form another group. This is the same thing that is happening with the Couples for Christ, isn’t it?

    Noel De la Fuente:

Yes, it may sound idealistic, and skeptics might think its stupid, but i agree completely.

  42. broadbandido broadbandido

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have not heard of an organization like a Samahang Filipino. There are Samahang Ilokano, Bisaya, Kapampangan, etc, but no Samahang Pilipino, why?

Sa mga Journalists na masasabing still on the right side of fighting the evil in Malacanang, Ellen is still on top of the list, together with Conrado de Quriroz and Lito Banayo. The ones who have fallen mightily by the wayside is Belinda Cunanan since her husband is now in a high-paying but non-performing job at the SSS.

  46. Reminder lang ha, no personal insults. We can disagree but let’s keep it civil.

  47. Mrivera Mrivera

“Everyone must bear in mind that Dr. Yap and all doctors are devoted to treating the sick and saving lives.”

    mr dela fuente,

  48. norpil norpil

unity? on what? i can understand n de la fuente’s opinion as well as others who may not agree with him.to disagree on a subject is only normal in a democratic society, only in totalitarian regimes are disagreement not allowed. i am thankful that we have this blog where the participants can disagree without giving their real identities. it is never necessary either to insult others to make a point.

  49. Magno:

We were talking about those children deprived of medical care kasi wala silang pera.

  51. Filipinos Unite Against This Fake Regime! Unite Against Neri, forget about Teri!!!

  52. We may disagree with Mr de la Fuente on priorities as we may have our own set of priorities but I do believe Mr de la Fuente and other Filipino-Americans or Filipinos at large have the right to feel hurt by the slur and to do everything in his/their power to try to unite groups of people to make his/their sentiments known.

Bottom line is it’s his right to try to assemble Filipinos behind him/them and we shouldn’t attack him for that.

  53. luzviminda luzviminda

As I said, I believe the outrage/sentiments of the Fil-Ams in the medical profession is very valid and BEYOND POLITICS! Why can’t some understand them and sympathize with them. Besides, they are fighting for the HONOR of Filipino medical practitioners not only in America but all over the world!!!

  54. Ellen,

For my defence Ellen, I believe I did not insult Filipino-Americans. Mr de la Fuente must not say I insulted Filipino-Americans. And for his information, I am a US passport holder and therefore may be considered Fil-American.

What you published in your column was this:

“our friends in the US to do the same thing about the NBN corruption deal – I wanna see them in same fighting mood! Then I will believe they are patriots, otherwise, no dice! (They’re merely feeling slighted coz their li’l amor propio has been a li’l bruised…)”

Was there anything insulting about that? C’mon! I was entitled to my opinion and I defended it, basically I said, “I want to see them in the same fighting mood!” If he feels bad that I might doubt their patriotism, all he has to do is to say that they are but he must not take that as an insult.

I am entitled to my opinion and so is he even but he cannot defend his opinion by proving the contrary of what he says, i.e., by bordering on the insulting himself.

  55. luzviminda luzviminda

It is not these Fil-Am protesters who are trying to divert the attention from the mess of our country’s politics. It is Malacañang.

  56. As for diversionary tactics, we must be clear on one thing: I never accused the Fil-Ams who manifested their outrage over the slur of diverting the attention that should be focused on the NBN deal: I ACCUSED ED ERMITA, the Palace of seeking to divert Filipinos’ attention from the raging controversy at home by training the guns against a foreign target – a common military, political tactic to unite the people behind a belleaguered leader.

  57. Ellen,

One of my sisters (a “half-sister” by my Dad’s first marriage, my Dad being a widower) is a doctor in the US, a younger brother is in California who’s also a doctor, his two sons are also doctors… Heh!

  58. This is not the first time I’ve been attacked (on the press front) because over my strong stand on certain issues. My opinion was also the subject of another columnist’s ire in his column but can’t remember the name of the columnist in the Business Mirror. Another time was by a Manila Bulletin columnist over an anodyne comment of mine some 3 or 4 years ago.

  59. But I’ve been mentioned by Max Soliven in some of his columns a few years back in a good light. Soliven had also included some of my thoughts in his column without naming me.

    i second the motion.

  62. Luzviminda:

  63. In fact, Ellen, this is the line of argument that I cannot understand nor agree with Mr. dela Fuente, that Filipinos, and even us, foreign nationals of Philippine origin, should be grateful that they were able to leave the Philippines, work overseas and send their remittances to support their families back home kahit na iyong karamihan gumawa pa ng mga kalokohan sa ibang bansa para magkapera, and that no foreigner should make fun of them even when there is a need to expose things that victims of neglect, etc. by the Philippine authorities naturally would want to be addressed properly as this human trafficking of the unqualified.

I don’t see why those qualified should be bothered by such remark that cannot in fact be denied to be true in many cases. I don’t subscribe to this kind of mentality as a matter of fact.

  64. Mrivera Mrivera

    anna,

  65. Ellen, I have reasons to suspect Luli as a matter of fact. I have encountered her several times in egroups for Filipinos. Minsan nga nagkamali siya and answered in her real name.

  71. pechanco pechanco

Makasingit nga para hindi kayo-kayo na lang. Allow me to correct Cocoy first for stating that the Filipinos will never unite. I agree it would be extremely difficult to unite the Filipinos, but to say “never” is like saying the country and people are without hope. There’s always hope and changes as long as we breath in this world. While I think Mr. De la Fuente came in strong with his letter, he has some good points too. I just don’t agree him singling our AdeBrux just because she expressed her opinion like the others. Respect lang ang kailangan. There are those who claim to be experts and behave as if their opinions are the best and correct; but there are not too many in this blog with the exception of one or two. But definitely not AdeBrux. Too bad, Mr. De La Fuente, you bumped into a blog where the camaraderie is the envy of the other blogs. Many try to imitate but fail. Iba dito. Iba ang pagmamahalan at pagsasamahan dito.

Cocoy’s position is understandable. Having been in the US this long and seen the different cultures, I don’t blame him for saying that the Filipinos will never unite. By introducing Catholicism in the Philippines, it started a major conflict with the mainstream religion at that time. I’m not saying Catholicism is bad.

When a Pinoy newly arrives in the US or other countries, the first question a fellow Filipino asks is “taga saan ka?” Why ask this question when all of us are Filipinos regardless of what province we come from? Kapag Ilokano ka din tulad niya, there’s an immediate connection. But if you come from a region that the guy happens to dislike, baka layuan ka pa niya. That’s true. Ystakei gave you good point why only the Filipinos have no Filipino Town of their own. One group speaks Ilocano, another Kapampangan, another Bisaya, another Tagalog. I can understand Tagalog speaking Pinoys unable to speak other dialects pero iyon mga taga ibang probinsiya marunong naman pero ayaw mag-Tagalog. They prefer to speak English (with a thick accent) than Tagalog.

Even running for councilman in a small city in the US, maraming Pinoy ang naglalaban-laban. Hindi lang iyan kung sport sila. Nagsisiraan pa. That’s why I understand why Cocoy believes there will never be unity among Filipinos. But will the day comes when we see a united Filipino? Why not? It has to come from the top. The kind of leader or political leadership is paramount to this unity that we all hope for.
Sa ngayon, habang nandoon ang impaktang babae sa Palasyo na ayaw lumayas, I agree with Cocoy that there will never be unity yet as long as this evil woman is there.

  72. Norpil,

Nope, not to my knowledge. Frankly, these Belgians make me laugh. Imagine dividing up Belgium, already so tiny. They’re like children. They always have to bicker over this and that. This problem of splitting Belgium I think is due to the fact there was nothing else to put in the news during the Summer holidays… hahahah!

Really grotesque in the extreme: For instance, when we first moved here, we were renting a house in a Flemish district. When I first went to the district city hall (it’s called “Commune” and each district has its own “commune” hall to declare our presence (part of the rules), the man at the counter wouldn’t speak to me. I repeated my question several times and so at some point, he answered in Flemish – I said, sorry I don’t understand (I was speaking to him in French) and he just rattled on and turned away. Some sympathysing soul explained to me that the guy said I should learn Flemish.

I was literally floored and said, but I’ve just arrived and the law says I should get my carte de séjour right away, and from what I know the Belgian “constitution” speaks of bilingualism as official in the Kingdom, i.e., French and Flemish so where could I be wrong? After all, I didn’t speak to him in Tagalog, I spoke in one of the two official languages of the Kingdom…

The Belgian (Flemish himself) said to me, “I know…things are very stupid around here and that’s what’s driving us Belgians crazy too…” Believe it or not, he even said to me “We Belgians deserve the disdain we are treated with in the EU.” I couldn’t comment on that, was already self-deprecating enough for him to admit that.

One French speaking person in the queu said (was from the Czech Republic), she had the same problem with the same counter clerk too a month before and she complained to the director. I just laughed. Completely barking mad and infantile!

    Heheh!

  73. So you see folks, Pinas does not have a monopoly of disunity! Hehehe!

  74. pechanco pechanco

Remember the slogan “This Nation Shall Be Great Again”? When Marcos first used it, everyone laughed and no one believed. But during the first few years of Martial Law, the nation was indeed great again. Such greed and human weaknesses brought him down and his presidency in the end.

  75. pechanco pechanco

Good one AdeBrux, Pinoys don’t have the monopoly of disunity. Even the Chinese. Sa Canada, French speaking ones and the English speaking don’t get along. The only difference is that when worse comes to worst that the nation is in danger or has a common enemy, every citizen regardless of their political affiliation, culture and religious beliefs join hands in facing the common enemy. That’s what makes America great even if we hate Bush and their foreign policy. Democrats or Republicans, rich or poor, Jews or Christians…they all unite against the enemy. What about the Philippines? Well, nangyari din naman noong panahon ng Kastila at Hapon; but do we have to wait for such event to happen again to be united? Let’s start by ousting this GMA.
If we unite in ousting her, then the “unity” that we all dream of may soon be realized.

  76. Valdemar Valdemar

    Mr. Noel de la Fuente,

Call ako. Give me here your email address. We can talk about your pipedreams as well as mine and some brutally frank discussions on the doctors there and here and the pinoys there in general. You can even ask me why I opted to suffer here and didnt remain stateside after schooling there. But just the same, I welcome you here. Its fun. We have lively people here.

  77. TonGuE-tWisTeD TonGuE-tWisTeD

OK, so let’s write what they want to read:

Merry Christmas.

  78. My dear Firefly,

As ever, you have a way with words that really touches my heart!

  79. luzviminda luzviminda

    Yuko,

I think the groups that are protesting in the US are not directly connected with Malacañang. I believe they are fighting their own battle precisely because they cannot count on the fake government of Gloria to fight for them knowing that Gloria is ‘Tuta of Kano’. That is why nakisawsaw lang ang Malacañang only to show na ‘concern’ sila kuno. But look now even the Dept of Health or the Dept of Education are silent. Other groups have their own battles to fight. As long as sa ikabubuti ng pangkaraniwang Pilipino, dapat ay suportahan natin. Tulad natin dito, we are doing our fight against Gloria’s evil regime in our way here at Ellen’s blog. Let us continue to fight the evils that are hounding us… individually, by groups, and if possible as one united Pinoys!!!

  80. Ellen,

I sincerely have a suspicion that continuing to tackle this topic, “Desperate Housewife slur” is just creating a bigger wedge and might divide the Pinoys more than they are already divided today.

As Etnad said earlier, on October 8th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

    “Next topic please!!!!!!”

    But that’s just me.

Now, for all Americans who demean the Medical Graduates of “some” school in the Philippines, take a look at how your very own Health Care System resulted in this:

  82. I’m obliged to post Mr. de la Fuente’s letter in the spirit of fairness.

  83. pechanco pechanco

What you did Ellen was the right thing to do; that is, posting his letter. That also gave us here especially AdeBrux to respond. Unlike other blogs, ET applies fairness to all regardless of what their positions are.

  84. luzviminda luzviminda

    TT,

I believe that the relatives of those Fil-Am medical practitioners, who are left behind in Pinas receiving financial and material support and who are also suffering under Gloria’s evil regime are doing the battle and fighting her repressive, corrupt government.

  85. Luzviminda: I think the groups that are protesting in the US are not directly connected with Malacañang.

    *****

I don’t know about that Luzviminda, but two of the people who have sent me the petition on this “slur” are bosom friends and die-hard supporters of GLORC, one in fact was her classmate at Assumption who thinks that Filipinos are stupid not to support her classmate. That for me is the worse slur!

  86. Etnad Etnad

Sabi ni de la Fuente “Let me remind everyone that Filipino doctors undergo rigorous testing and continuing education to be able to practice medicine in the United States.”

  87. MrG MrG

    Ellen, huling hirit lang!

I am glad that there is this discussion about rallying Filipinos to protest against acts that continue to push us down as if to prevent us from ever rising to our full potential as a people. We must be allowed to maintain our self respect and one way of doing this is for those that have unjustly wronged us to acknowledge their mistake and perhaps do some corrective measures to right historical wrongs and not to revise history books to make them right.

At the outset, let me mention that it is not my intention to acquire American citizenship although I am one of those that recently wrote the American Embassy in Manila for the issuance of my passport (see http://ampoy.reklamo.ph). Although the Embassy admitted that I was an American National at birth, I could not be considered an American citizen.

So, what happened to my birthright? Was I born again at a later date as a Filipino citizen? Then my date of birth should have been July 4, 1946 and not January 1, 1941.

People in the Philippine Islands born from December 10, 1898 to July 4, 1946 we label Territorial Filipinos – and that includes my classmates, me and a lot of vetarans, members of the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE).

May pumiyak ba?

Skeptic? No way. Sarcastic pa siguro!

Otherwise, forget it.

The letter of Mr Noel de la Fuente has brought home to us here that some Filipino abroad can be ‘offended’ by some flippant comment on a television programme but seem to be unaffected by the ‘Internatinal Community’ demanding that Gloria Arroyo stops corruption & extra judicial killings and despite visits from ‘International Investigators’ who confirm these acts of corruption & killings, she and her army chief of staff are in blatent ‘denial’.
The fact is that Mr Noel de la Fuente could do some good and assist his fellow Filipino here by getting up-to-date with the huge problems being caused by the Arroyo government on families here. But maybe we are wistling -in-the-wind.

There is now a MaYi Theatre company established by a group of Asian Americans- with Jorge Ortoll as Executive Director..Last week there was a book launching of Savage Stage a collection of their plays which a friend and I attended. Every now and then we have art exhibits at the Consulate. Last week Bert Florentino was honored. Slowly but surely we are moving..

Natunugan yata kaya na-cancel yung pagpunta doon.

Walang kwenta daw sa kanila yung DH slur. Dapat nga raw magpasalamat pa yung mga Doktor dahil kung iisipin daw yung sinabi ni Teri Hatcher, ibig sabihin, kahit gradweyt lang sila “from some med school in the Philippines” nakakapasa sila sa stringent pre-employment requirements at qualifications para maging full-fledged doctors sa very sophisticated health system ni Uncle Sam.

One thing for sure, all those years that I worked here in the States, never did I take any crap from any race considering I am the only Asian in the predominantly all white company. I made my performance defines who am I. Kaya yung mga sumunod sa akin na mga kababayan meron agad goodwill because the management alredy know that Pinoy are good workers.

    To everyone,

I will talk about frame and framing. This is relevant to what had happened and what is happening now in the Philippines and to Filipinos residing elsewhere. To make my point clearer, frame and framing is akin to an innocent person being framed for a crime he did not commit and is punished for it. So anyone who is framed and is powerless to defend himself or fight back becomes a victim of a terrible injustice.

Spain framed us. They presented us to the world as savages and indolent. They further tightened their grip on power by a policy of divide and rule. They put the different tribes in different frames and encouraged them to fight among themselves. The big frame and the little frames they put us in enabled them to rule for almost 400 years.

The effects of this framing still manifest itself today. Someone asked. Why not Club Filipino? Why only Club Kapampangan, Club Tagalog or Club Ilokano? That is exactly the point, until now we are divided. The Filipino patriots realized these framing was not for the benefit of the Filipinos. They revolted against Spain. Although successful for a short time, it eventually failed. Because different factions insisted on creating their own frames. Jose Rizal advocated for change byh parliamentary means, meaning to petition the Spanish government to change their repressive policies in the Philippines. Dr. Rizal was executed and the proponents of armed struggle led by Andres Bonifacio amd Emilio Aguinaldo pursued the war of independence against Spain. Bonifacio and Aguinaldo also had differences. They each wanted to create their own frames. They even disagreed on how the Filipino soldier should fight in battle. The United States put the Philippines under its protection. Eventually they colonized us after a brutal Filipino-American war. The Americans framed us also. They continued the divide and policy of Spain. They told the American people that we were savages that must be saved from ourselves and taught democracy. That sounds familiar? Most of you are very young.

I am almost sure you do not know the song Zamboanga. The lyrics of this song is “Don’t you know, don’t you know far Zamboanga . . . where beautiful maidens live, etc. The Americans, to justify the frame they put us in, changed the lyrics to: “Where the monkeys have no tails in Zamboanga and just repeated this phrase over and over again. My maternal grand mother told me she defended herself and the Filipinos by telling the Americans that if the Filipinos were brown monkeys, then the Americans are white monkeys. Then the Japanese came. They framed us also by their Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere and they are the Protectors of the Philippines. The Americans came back. The Americans framed us again. Parity Rights which gave American citizens the same rights as Filipinos in exploiting Philippine natural resources was made part of the Philippine Constitution. U.S. air and naval bases were also established on the pretext that we needed protection. Like it or not, American influence is still very strong in the Philippines today. But wait, Japan. Korea and China are also trying to gain influence and foothold in the Philippines.

If we remained divided, we will be powerless to protect Philippine interest. Even Ferdinand Marcos framed us. Older folks will remember the most effective slogan of control of Martial Law was: Sa ikuunlad ng bayan, disiplina ang kailangan. We protest this and Martial Lw itself. But we did not gain wide support because many Filipinos agreed that Filipinos should be ruled with an iron fist to discipline us. I was very very lucky to come out of martial law alive. Many of my collegues were killed and their deaths were never reported in the controlled Press.

I did not realized how effective and powerful this slogan was until I arrived in the U.S. Influential businessmen and members of the academia told me to my face that the Filipinos really lack discipline, martial law was justified and that we could not handle freedom. I told them they are stupid and ignorant. They don’t have a monopoly on freedom. They shot back and asked why the Filipinos did not throw him out of office. That was 1978. Even now, some Americans still believe that. Many discriminate against Filipinos on this basis. The Americans further put us in a frame that enabled them to make us feel guilty for crimes of a few Filipinos and succeed in discriminating against Flipinos.

    Continuation.

I’m sorry for the error. I must have hit the send key without completing the blog.

Anyway I’ll rewrite the last sentence. Some Americans further put us in a frame that will enable them to make us feel guilty and responsible for the crimes of a few Filipinos. We are corrupt because we have a corrupt government. Everywhere I turn, the Filipinos are blamed for some misdeeds. Nobody blames the ruling oligarchy in the Philippines, the foreigners who influence policies for their benefit and others who exploit the Filipinos. And we fell into their frame to our detriment. So what is the big deal if I insult you? Your reputation is bad anyway. So you are fair game who can be ridiculed, insulted, demeaned and discriminated against without hesitation and with impunity. Some Filipinos protested but were ignored. In this time, I regret some Filipinos air the Filipino dirty linen that further justifies the insult or riducle. This just show our weakness and lack of empowerment.

I realized that I am regarded as an intruder in this website. I also realized that I only differ with most of you in the method to be used in effecting change for tne benefit of all Filipinos. My priority is to promote and help achieve unity among Filipinos as the solution to the ills in Philippine society. Your priority is to attack Gloria Arroyo to dislodge her from power. I can not understand why most of you attacked me when my motivation was not bad.

This is my last blog here. I am going to log out after this. I’m not afraid of controversy. Believe me, I am used to fights and controversies. I’m leaving because I do not wish to engage in an internecine war that can destroy us all instead of achieving our goals.

The East India Company in Manila

Nevertheless, the British were intent on establishing trade settlement in Mindanao and in the Sulu Islands.

Here’s her post (that’s also been posted in my blog: http://www.manila-bay-watch.blogspot.com/2007/10/finals-world-rugby-cup-2007-will-see.html ):

    Chyt said…

“Hello, sister. I am a complete ignoramus (Is this a noun? But I guess you know what I mean)when it comes to sports.

“But I am using the comment box of this topic to say “Cheers!” for having stirred a hornet’s nest among our kababayans in America.

“I got your point. It is not that you were unsympathetic. I think you considered their act a brave one, but you lamented that if they could be capable of such act of courage, why don’t they harness this same courage to confront their government of their birthland on the several anti-people moves it has taken?

“I was the lawyer of the examinees and nursing leaders who exposed the 2006 nursing leakage exam. It was a tough battle we had to fight. We got encouragement from some Filipino nurses in the US, and in fact, a Phil Nurses Association wrote Malacanang joining our issues. But there was no resounding collective action from the Filipino nurses in the entire America.

“Now, if a TV program were to denigrate the Filipino nurses in America on account of the 2006 nursing scandal, the prudent action would be not to bark up the program only. It would be to bark up Malacanang as well and to acknowledge complicity (by inaction) in the erosion of the Filipino medical and allied professionals’ image offshore.

“But then, some people can be selective in their issues. It is only when their direct personal interests are attacked that they complain. When their neighbors are attacked, they keep mum. Whatever happened to the “good neighbor” Filipino virtue?

“I wish I could say all this in Ellen’s blog but I forgot my password. Been trying to get a new one but I’m not getting a response.

“Let’s go out and stir some more hornet’s nests.

    “You go, girl!”

  131. Thanks very much Ellen!

Don’t you go, don’t you go to far Zamboanga
Where you may forget your darling far away
Don’t you go, don’t you go, for if you leave me
How can I, without you stay?

Oh weep not, my dear Paloma
Oh weep not, for I’ll return
Oh weep not, my little darling

What are you talking about, titser? Walang intrigahan dito.

  135. Thanks, Tumblingdice, for the Zamboanga song. I used to sing it when I was in Grade I. I thought it was good, but I was told that any mention of Zamboanga was meant to be derogatory with some Americans then saying that it was inhabited by people who looked like tail-less monkeys! That I consider a real slur.

Another real slur to me was when the US Embassy would meddle in the running of the Philippine court trying a horny soldier accused of raping a Filipino woman regardless of whether or not she was indeed a prostitute as these Americans and their sympathizers have accused her.

I have actually interpreted for similar cases in Japan, but never have I heard of the US embassy taking custody of their servicemen tried in Japanese courts nor they tell us how to run our courts. And never have I heard Japanese nationals, who may look at these women with the white part of their eyeballs but never, never, make them feel cheap calling them “sluts, etc.” the way I have heard American sympathizers called “Nicole”! That, for me, was a much worse slur by a Filipino to a fellow Filipino!!!

I signed a petition for her as a matter of fact.

Mr. de la Fuente and others,

When we are promoting nationalism, patriotism, or whatever Pro-Pinoy ism, we examine from the top. A general perpective over the full landscape. Instead of being hysterical (later historical) let us understand where our audience are coming from. Then we can expect they can understand where we’re from. I’m sure we are headed in the same direction the problem is how we take everyone on the same route.

I know Mr. de la Fuente you are reading this. We can see clearly through your intentions. Noble as they are, may we stress it further that we, the Filipinos left behind in the mother country, are in the thick of a fight to save this friggin divided country from the claws of a monstrous cabal that seeks to destroy it.

Sure, we can feel the anger against Teri Hatcher ourselves but we can only do so much. We do not want to lose focus, sidetracked into nitpicking on some petty verbal abuse. We are trying hard to survive here in the major league of abuses that this, YOUR country for six years has been subjected to.

Don’t get me wrong, Mr. de la Fuente, I admire your efforts directed at bringing this issue and your unity advocacy to fruition. You and your associates there are doing the country mighty proud. But as your idealism urges you, unite your efforts with us, as of late count, 82% of Filipinos who want Gloria out of Malacañang today.

Let us save NOW, with the help of all our medical professionals worldwide, the country from its inevitable death in the hands of a usurping, cheating, lying, murderous few. We cannot do it by ourselves. Yes, you are right all along, unity is the key!

More than ever, our countrymen now need leaders, like yourselves, who can mobilize a significant force from among the digitally-connected Fil-Ams and put in action this 82% overwhelming majority who cannot even go beyond skipping their jobs to do so.

You, who have the financial stability to carry on in case of a prolonged confrontation many of our compatriots are scared of.

You, who touch base with the significant people who can influence the events as they happen.

You, who are blessed with the experience and education.

But most of all you, who I’m sure, are still hoping to come home to a land of peace and prosperity, strengthened by the pillars of honesty, integrity, unity, compassion and respect.

Then, we can all raise hell when any insensitive individual attempts to humiliate this mighty proud brown race.

    Peace. Out.

Folks, you all know that “joke” isn’t true, albeit it might have been derived from a true event. Why the fuss over something that’s not true, much more accurate?

If an employer believes that joke and discriminates against hiring you, that ought to tell you what kind of person s/he is and maybe even avoided. If a foreigner believes that, ignore and avoid them.

Hmm, ABC has already apologized for what’s otherwise fiction based on non-fiction. Can everyone move along now, or do some still feel “passionate” about this?

When Terri Hatcher’s character in “Desperate Housewives” flippantly inferred in the September 30 episode of the hit TV show that all physicians who receive their diplomas from “some med school in the Philippines” are quacks, it exposed not just the anti-Filipino bigotry of the producers, scriptwriters and cast of that ABC show but the total absence of the Filipino community’s clout in Hollywood.

Certain groups in Hollywood have clout. If the “Desperate” writer had used Israel instead of the Philippines, he would have been immediately denounced as anti-semitic and his offending script dumped in the garbage along with him.

If the script attacked the integrity of African Americans, the writer would have received the Don Imus “nappy-headed hos” award and would have disappeared in a New York minute.
If the script denigrated someone’s sexual orientation, the writer would get the Isaiah Washington treatment named for the actor who used the “F” word in a confrontation with fellow actor T.R. Knight in “Grey’s Anatomy”. The show’s producers compelled Washington to publicly apologize for the homophobic slur and to take anger management classes. After complying with all that was asked of him, Washington was fired from the show by ABC. Now that’s power.

  148. Billy Esposo writes a good piece on desperate cry against housewife Teri Hatcher’s ‘slur’:

“I think we will be wasting precious time and energy if we only harp on an undeserved remark alone without making sure it also inspires a reflection on why all this is happening.”

    He also says:

“Filipinos count among the highest in the number of illegal immigrants and undocumented workers in many countries, but it is definitely unfair to regard every Filipino who goes abroad as an unwanted visitor.

“The proliferation of Filipino domestic workers overseas has given rise to making the word “Filipina” interchangeable with “domestic helper.”

“Now as to Cory Aquino being branded a SLUT on Comedy Central, charge that to bad impressions created by the current ruler who adheres to the practices of Harlot Politics.

“Unless we see the time when our medical professionals can at last find comfort and opportunity in our own shores, we should never really claim to the world that we are doing all we can to demand applause.”

  149. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

    Pechanco, Mr dela Fuente,

For all you know, some degree of Pinoy power is already gained from the Teri Hatcher’s slur. Look at Kevin Nadal’s petition online, it now ranks second to the “anti-semitic” website jewwatch.com (As of Oct 9, it had 115,476 signatories and still rising, in just 9 nine days. Compare this to 469,337 online protesters against jewwatch.com since 2004). Am not Fil-Am, but I signed it to show my solidarity and unity with this cause, realizing that it is perhaps a palliative solution to a larger problem in our homeland and abroad.

I think this has a telling effect, though somewhat peripheral to the larger issue of racism and head bashing of minorities. I seriously doubt that a slur like this should always be countered by Pinoy power, whatever it means. The real empowerment comes not thru protestations, but by display of good deeds among Filipinos (wherever they are), the “vanishing” pinoys, and honest leadership back home.

  150. Bibeth Orteza Bibeth Orteza

“Far, far worse than some middle-aged actor wanting to make sure that a diploma didn’t come from “some med school in the Philippines,” is that which we’ve all heard with our own ears, and globally, too, thanks to modern technology: “Hello, Garci.” And ‘Back off,’ and ‘Sec, may 200 ka rito,’ no matter the latter two you got through hearsay.

“One woman’s act of desperation to guarantee her position has cost us our dignity, and made us impossibly balat-sibuyas. If we truly don’t want to be judged along the standards of what is wrong about the country, we must do more than protest whenever we are used as some hapless punchline in some fictional world, we should take actual steps to ensure that we are respected as citizens of a respectable country, led by a genuinely-elected leader, and this is a task for overseas Filipinos, as well.

titser, my mother-in-law’s not here, I was the one who put parts of her column here. I guess this means I answer, on her behalf. I don’t know that “mansions” were being built for Laarni, ang sabi sa mismong kaso, isa lang daw.

Armida in Erap’s time was chairman of the MTRCB, during which period a group of rather gung-ho board members “x-ed” an ABS-CBN TV show, “A Christmas Prayer,” which touched on the Erap “excesses,”somewhat. Armida on her own organized a 2nd Review Committee to look at the material again. The program passed, and was aired, without cuts. I’m bringing this up to point out that whatever may be said of Erap, he was no fascist, an attitude imbibed by his appointees. He didn’t stop TV programs from being aired, no matter these were against him. He didn’t stop people from rallying. Wala siyang inutusang pari, o arsobispo, o monsignor na kopohin at solohin ang EDSA Shrine. He had nothing like EO 464. May mga extra-judicial killings ba n’on? But we-wait lang, titser. Before I go any further, linawin ko lang. It’s not as if nag-ingay ang entertainment industry against graft and corruption under other presidents, tapos biglang tumiklop under Erap. Hindi “KUMIBO,” as you oh-so-titserly put it, ang mga entertainment industry, kasi never halos itong kumibo, noong panahon pa ni Marcos, Cory, FVR, all the way to Erap at hanggang ngayon kay GMA. Sa “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” may nagpa-interview na ba, bukod kay Kris? Wala.

And about Erap, hindi nga ba at nasintensiyahan na?

I’m sorry. That should be Ms Orteza. I apologize.

  184. Titser, titser, what made you think that you were the target of that line?

    # Bibeth Orteza Says:

Over ka naman, Pechanco. We all inspire each other, I think.

I was a little kid when you started as a comedian. Anong tawag mo naman kay FG Piggydal?

You’re very right Bibeth about Erap. In his time, he was no so strict with the media. Kaya nga umabuso ang media sa kanya. He was also not strict with his enemies whom he allowed to hold protest rallies almost daily. If Erap only followed half of what this Madame Impakta is doing these days, siguro nasa Malacanang pa si Erap.

  188. Hoy Pechanco, bata pa si Bibeth ha. Mas matanda ako di hamak. Okay lang yan. I look at every year added to my life here on earth as a blessing.

Pechanco, Ellen is a dear, dear friend. I called her “Tiyang” but that was in no way a put-down, that was with affection. But if it makes you happy, I was born December, 1953. I keep no secrets. 🙂

    Dina Pinoy:

    define kaibigan?

    Heto magandang naituro ng Media.

Sino nagsabi nito?

    dos?
