Elmer and Emerson have decided to give 15 per cent of their royalty from the sales of “Pulutan” to Philippine Military Academy Development Fund Inc. (PDFI) and 10 per cent to PMA Class 2000, where they belong.

If you happen to be in the area of Makati Commercial Center tomorrow early afternoon, drop by at Powerbooks in Greenbelt4. The authors of “Pulutan: from the Soldiers’ Kitchen”, Elmer Cruz and Emerson Rosales, will be meeting editors and columnists and will be available for book signing.
As we have mentioned in our past columns, Elmer and Emerson, young military officers who were involved in what is dubbed as the 2003 Oakwood mutiny, were released from four years of detention before last Christmas. While in detention, they came out with a cookbook on pulutan which Yvonne Chua and I helped edit. Published by Anvil Publishing, it was released last August and has become a bestseller.
Here are some of the feedback we got from those who tried out some of the recipes fin the cookbook:

I got a copy of your bestselling cookbook, “Pulutan – From the Soldiers’ Kitchen.” I cooked some of the recipes last Christmas Eve dinner. Mom-in-law was so impressed, I know how to cook daw pala. hehe! ”
Felipe Q. Cabacoy, also in U.S.A, sent us this letter last September: “I’m on my way to Richmond (Virginia) and I am reading the cookbook. I shared the book with Secretary of Public Safety John Marshall whose mother is a Filipina from Bicol and we are both amused at the name of the recipes. We both look forward to try some of them in the near future.
“Kindly extend to both Ensign Cruz and Rosales my sincere appreciation for their sense of humor despite their predicament. I hope that their situation will be resolved at the earliest, so that they can move forward with their life. I wish them well in their future.”
“Pulutan” has been featured in foreign publications. Here what they said:
Carmel Crimmins, writing for Reuters said, “The recipes are not for the weak of stomach.There is ‘Insectxotic’, which is beetle stirfried in soy sauce, ‘Kinilaw
na Tamilok’ or woodworm served with freshly squeezed calamansi juice as well as the innocent-sounding “Soup No.5”, which involves a bull’s penis and testicles.
“The penis and the woodworm are believed to be aphrodisiacs, as is a seafood stirfry called ‘Gising Gising’ or ‘Wake Up’.
“Meat dishes — often involving intestines and innards — abound and the cooking instructions are no-nonsense. For ‘French Kiss’, which requires a beef tongue, the reader is told to scald the organ thoroughly before scraping it clean.”
It was also featured in Hongkong”s South China Morning Post by Alan Robles.
Robles said “Most of the pulutan take a few minutes to cook, and many are spicy and peppery. One dish rated five beer mugs is crispy camaro – rice insects stir fried with garlic and onions, then topped with a dash of soy sauce and sliced tomatoes.”
Robles, who wrote about the Pulutan last September, said: “The book was launched without fanfare last week. The authors could not make it to any signing. They were both in jail.”
Well, Elmer and Emerson are now free and they will be at Powerbooks in Greenbelt4 tomorrow, after lunch.

A crew of a Japanese TV I do translation for, Ellen, was telling me about how he and his group were victimized by the soldiers subjecting people through some unnecessary scrutiny. Naive as they were, they told the soldier where they were billeted. They were released after their driver told them to slip some money into the hands of those checkers (kuno), but they were surprised to find the same idiots knocking on their doors with girls they were definitely trying to pimp to those Japanese. They declined.
Abaw, tinakot pa daw silang huhulihin sila at kakasuhan na gumagawa ng pornographic movie nang makitang mga TV crew sila. Buti na lang daw dumating iyong local staff ng TV network nila.
What could I say? Alam ko namang totoo. Pretend na lang akong wala akong lahing pilipino! Saklap!
As there are many bad Pinoys there are also many good ones. The other day, I saw on TV a Japanese in the Philippines who was deported after serving term for some years for raping a 12 or younger girl. Sabihin mo sa mga kaibigan mong Japanese TV crew that you’re half Pinay; that there are also good soldiers like Trillanes and Magdalo soldiers in jail. The crooks that they see are the products of evil GMA regime. Besides, the ones bribing are as guilty as the ones being bribed. If I were those TV crew, I would have reported to the local TV media like ABS-CBN or seek the assistance of honest journalists like Ellen. I-report ang dapat i-report !
The biggest ZTE witness, in fact bigger than Neri and Joey De Venecia, a certain Lozada did not attend the Senate hearing despite being subpoena. He has been receiving death threats. He really wanted to speak at the Senate; but his boss Sec. Lito Atienza did not allow him to appear. Worse, Lozada was sent abroad on the same day the Senate hearing on ZTE would have resumed. Old trick. Just like Mike Arroyo who immediately left the country whenever the heat was on. Mga duwag! Mga walang yagbols! Grizzy, there were two Japanese convicted of rape who were deported recently. The one you mentioned was blind. The girl’s parents kinda sold her to this guy as his mistress. The other one was similarly convicted of rape and served in jail for quite sometime. Medyo may edad na itong pangalawa…mga 71 years old na daw kaya na-pardon ni GMA. These two are presumed to have returned to Japan by now.
Over at the Senate hearing on ZTE yesterday, si Jarius Bondoc lang ang sumipot. Si Lozada umalis ng araw na iyon kung kailan may subpoena sa Senado. Same trick…same trick applied by Neri, Abalos, Mike Arroyo and other crooks. They leave abroad to escape the subpoena ang hearing. Lozada is reported to be a good decent man. He’s willing to talk when he returns. Bigla na lang daw siya pinaalis ng boss niya (Sec. Lito Atienza) for an undisclosed government work abroad. Bigla na lang may trabaho abroad! First, sa London daw pero nalaman ng ABS-CBN team ni Ricky Carandang nang nasa airport sila na sa Hongkong lang ang punta.
At the Senate, what surprised me was when Enrile demanded that Lozada be issued warrant of arrest. Sa umpisa natuwa ako sa ginawa ni Enrile. Imbes na protektahan na naman ang bata ng Malacanang, naging mabagsik si Enrile. I thought Enrile has changed and now back as an opposition. But when Ping Lacson pointed out that issuing Lozada a warrant of arrest at this time when he’s abroad might discourage him from returning and testify. Lacson’s view made sense to me.
I think Enrile just pulled a good one thinking people wouldn’t see his trick/strategy. Pakawala iyan ng Malacanang si Enrile. Buti na lang wala doon si Joker. The two together with Santiago and even Angara are among GMA’s most loyal defenders in the Senate today.
Ako, balak kong magtayo ng bar at itawag na Magtalo Bar. I want to use it as a venue for healthy debates on any kind of issues. About the book, perhaps Ellen or this blog could act as distribution center for those living abroad and OFWs. Hindi naman lahat nakakauwi sa Pilipinas. Organised by Benigno Ramos, they were born out of José P. Laurel’s refusal to conscript Filipinos for Japan. The Japanese decreed that the group should be founded in November 1944 when they brought together many of the supporters of the defunct Ganap Party.

Bal/grizzy: Re- Makapili…My father served in the Jap gov’t not by choice but by necessity…I may not understand the conditions at the time..but this is what he told me much later…during the Jap occupation..he was an elected board member of the province..and they (who were elected-cong..governor, etc) were all rounded up and asked to continue the gov’t..the search for him caused the death of his father in law..thus with we lived in the compounds of the Japanese barracks..and his two younger sisters (dalaga na sila) lived with us..
..to continue: in a sense their serving helped in the preservation of peace in the province..he was one of those who were in the middle..why do I say in the middle?..ang mga batang kapatid niyang lalaki ay guerillas as a matter of fact one of them became a well loved captain…at alam ko somehow may contact sila and helped one another..and Antique (particularly the regions of Sibalom and San Remigio) did suffer much during WWII..And according to my father..the Japanese soldiers though they gave the impressions of being a “samurai” and maybe they were..they are as human as any one of us..they were fathers and they have children kaya mababait sila sa mga kabataan..Tho my stay in Japan was just but one summer..they are nice people..the men maybe may seem distant and cold..but I don’t think so…it is their culture just as we have ours..

Do you mean that it is alright for people to give up their principle out of necessity? If that is so, then Trillanes and his group could just declare their loyalty and cooperation to the GMA administration and be free. I’m sorry for saying that. Dumarating kasi sa isang tao ang pagsubok sa kanyang prinsipyo at panininidigan. Ano man ganda at tukso na matatanggap kung ang kapalit naman ay ang ipinaglalaban para sa akin ay hindi 100% tama. There are many including the faithful religious people who died for their faith and beliefs. I’m not in favor of many of Jehova’s doctrines; but this is one group whose many members gave their lives during the Nazi regime and even in other parts of the world.
I can say the same thing to other groups that are severely persecuted during those times and even now. But then, no one knows deep inside your father’s heart as well as those who chose to work with the invaders.

My limited research tells me that most of those cruel Japanese soldiers were actually Korean criminals forced to join the Japanese Imperial Army.

I saw it in GMA7, ABS-CBN, ANC but I didn’t see Ellen there except for Rex Robles and a hot babe. (Maganda nga ba o malabo lang talaga ang mga mata ko?)
If it turns out to become a bestseller, and I think it is getting there already, it would yet be another form of a silent protest. I mean, who would seriously buy a book of pulutan dishes created not in a test kitchen but in a detention cell? Authored not by hotel chefs but by hotel invaders?
But the selling point I guess lies in the spirit behind the book. The same spirit that keeps the fires of fervor burning in every upright Pinoy’s heart, soldier or not. It goes without saying, every freedom-loving Filipino should get his copy NOW, and set your mood, after a few shots of your favorite spirit, to those of the Magdalos. “We will not be broken by the tyrants!” would be something to toast for.

BB: what I mean by “necessity” is at that time..my father was just starting his family, career and politics..bata pa siya..pinaghahanap silang elected officials (he was provincial board member)to “help” run the gov’t. My grandfather was beaten near death when the Japanese captured him while looking for my father..and he never recovered from the beatings and he died..kaya napilitan na nagsurrender ang father ko. But in a sense he sort of protected the people from brutalities of the Japs..peaceful sa lugar namin..may kapatid at mga pinsan na dalagitas at the time..pero there were no cases of rapes, etc. sa bukid ng mga tio niya life went on..His brothers were guerillas pero walang masiadong away sa amin..From what I was told we had to live inside the barracks or close by and the Japanese officers frequented the house..but then his relatives who got sick were treated, etc..life was ok for him and his relatives..he had to choose the lesser of the two evils..

Just look at the development of Taiwan to see how it is to be under Japanese rule. Funny, but I find a more grateful people (meaning, people who appreciated being under Japanese rule for a time) among the natives of Taiwan than among those who came from the mainland. I guess, it is because the natives of Taiwan are more related to the people of Japan than to the Chinese in Beijing! 😛

I can understand the feeling. There was a time in my life when I missed talking in Tagalog, too. That was when there not many Filipinos in Japan. At least, in the US, I never talked in English with my parents and siblings. Over in Japan, when I wanted to speak Tagalog, I would go to the Philippine Embassy and talked to fellow UPians there in Tagalog. May pa-ingles-ingles din, pero binabara ko. Sinasabi ko na kaya ako nagpunta ng embassy para magsalita ng Tagalog dahil ayaw kong makalawang. Sabi nga, “those were the days.” Ngayon, kahit saan sulok ng Japan, may pinoy!
Rose, setting up a restaurant was a fantasy, judging from what came out of our studies. Two years would be hard enough to sustain. Three years tops. People who troop to restos for the hype or for being “in” altogether lose appetite (no pun) once the appeal for being unique weans. Expensive re-inventing, recycling and renaming will be the next order to resurrect a declining customer base.

I missed the TV news on the launching because we had our hearing at the Makati Regional Trial Court in the afternoon on the class suit we filed against the PNP and other officials involved in media suppression during and after the Manila Pen incident.
I was in the launching at Powerbooks but I had to leave early for the hearing. Anvil served some recipes from the cookbook.
The launch was successful. Big names in the food writing business were there: Claude Tayag of Philippine Star, Jessica Zafra,Iggy Ramos, and many others. Gemma Cruz, who writes for Manila Bulletin was there.
I invited Rex Robles and he came. He brought a lot of copies and wanted the “boys” to sign it.
I saw the bestsellers list of National Bookstore last Friday. “Pulutan” is number 6.

Elmer and Emerson have decided to give 15 per cent of their royalty from the sales of “Pulutan” to Philippine Military Academy Development Fund Inc. (PDFI) and 10 per cent to PMA Class 2000, where they belong.
I understand the PDFI is an organization of PMA alumni . They sponsor scholarships to dependents of alumni, especially those who die in combat. They also extend loans to alumni who are in need.
