Ang gustong sumali pa sa kaso na nakasampa sa Supreme Court ay maaaring pumunta sa opisina ng Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) sa RM 101, Alumni Center, magsaysay Avenue, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.
Sa gusto naman sumali sa kaso na nakasampa sa Makati Regional Trial Court, maaaring pumunta sa Roque & Butuyan Law Offices, Unit 1904 Antel 2000 Corporate Center, 121 Valero St., Salcedo Village, Makati.
Huwag kalimutan magdala ng authorized na identification card. Pwedeng sedula o passport.
Tatlo na lahat ang kasong isinampa ng mga journalists laban sa opisyal ng administrasyong Arroyo na sumisikil sa malayang pamamahayag. Ang una ay ang petition for writ of amparo at prohibition na isinampa ng 11 na reporter ng ABS-CBN na inaresto at nakulong noong Nov. 29 sa pangunguna ni Ces Drilon.
Sobra 80 ang nakapirma sa kasong isinampa sa Supreme Court at kasama dito sina Pinky Webb ng ABS-CBN at Zaneth Tafalla ng Probe na nandoon sa Manila Pen at tinangkang dalhin sa Bicutan ngunit nanlaban sila.
Sa class suit na humihingi ng P10 milyon na danyos na isinampa sa Makati Regional Trial Court ako pumirma. Halos 40 kami nakapirma doon. Kasama ko sina Charmaine Deogracias ng NHK TV, Ashzel Hachero ng Malaya, James Galvez ng Manila Times at Leah Flor ng Philippine Cable Television. Kasama kami sa naaresto at dinala sa Bicutan. Tinangka kaming posasan ng mga pulis ngunit hindi kami pumayag.
Sa aming pag-uusap bago naming isinampa ang mga kaso, may nagsabi na hindi na kami hihingi ng danyos. Piso lang daw ang hingi-in naming para “symbolic”. Ngunit sabi naming na humingi ng malaking danyos na makakaya natin bayaran ang filing fee.
Ang filing fee kasi depende sa laki ng hinhingi mong danyos. Tumulong sa amin ang South East Asia Press Alliance (SEAPA) sa filing fee na inabot ng P203,000. Ang SEAPA ay isang organisasyon na tumutulong sa pagprotekta ng press freedom sa rehiyon.
Kung mananalo kami, ilalagay naming ang pera sa isang fund para makatulong sa mga journalists na kailangan ang legal assistance.

I never said anything about “motive”. The assertion is simply that Journalism is a capitalist, commercial enterprise. The rights of journalism are the rights of information commerce, buying and selling, trade in data, news, views, entertainment, movie skeds, shipping, obits, comiks, etc.
This is not to denigrate journalism but to put it in social context and combat the obscurantist aggrandizement of journalism as some kind of special watchdog for govt. Of course they can assume that role, but not as a matter of right, only as a matter of “brand loyalty” to the particular media outfit, whether newspaper, tv or radio.
More importantly, viewing journalism as a commercial enterprise, establishes its lawful limits in practical situations. A proper appreciation of the hierarchy of Freedoms, rights and duties in the constitution is essential for peace and order.
The right to buy and sell information as a commodity CAN BE a noble, even salvific profession. But it must be made that without any special advantages over other commercial enterprises, since in the final analysis there is NO organized journalism without someone buying and someone selling some bit of information. Nothing is free, even among the noble savages, the press freedom fighters.
Every single one of those arrested was the employee of a large commercial corporation, many of them bound by strict Franchise Laws. None of these corporations is a Charity or nonprofit. They are all vendors of one sort or another.
Theres is no shame in that. But equal protection of the law implies equal compliance with it. No license for journalists to ignore the police!

Nangagalaiti si Bocobo sa mga journalists at parang baklang tinatalakan niya dito ang mga bloggers kasama na ang pagsasabing mali sina Ellen sa ginawi nila sa Manila Pen. Kung tama ang kanyang sinasabi, dapat sumama siya sa alipores ng idolo niyang si Gloria sa pagharap sa husgado. Isa pang alam ko ay kaklase niya si Erap sa Ateneo High School pati na iyong present ambassador of the Philippines to Japan. Kaya sinong may sabing mangmang si Erap?
