Vatican lists “new sins,” including pollution

By Philip Pullella

Vatican City (Reuters) – Thou shall not pollute the Earth.
Thou shall beware genetic manipulation. Modern times bring with them modern sins. So the Vatican has told the faithful that they should be aware of “new” sins such as causing environmental blight.

The guidance came at the weekend when Archbishop Gianfranco Girotti, the Vatican’s number two man in the sometimes murky area of sins and penance, spoke of modern evils.

Asked what he believed were today’s “new sins,” he told the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano that the greatest danger zone for the modern soul was the largely uncharted world of bioethics.

“(Within bioethics) there are areas where we absolutely must denounce some violations of the fundamental rights of human nature through experiments and genetic manipulation whose outcome is difficult to predict and control,” he said.

The Vatican opposes stem cell research that involves destruction of embryos and has warned against the prospect of human cloning.

Girotti, in an interview headlined “New Forms of Social Sin,” also listed “ecological” offences as modern evils.

In recent months, Pope Benedict has made several strong appeals for the protection of the environment, saying issues such as climate change had become gravely important for the entire human race.

Under Benedict and his predecessor John Paul, the Vatican has become progressively “green.”

It has installed photovoltaic cells on buildings to produce electricity and hosted a scientific conference to discuss the ramifications of global warming and climate change, widely blamed on human use of fossil fuels.

Girotti, who is number two in the Vatican “Apostolic Penitentiary,” which deals with matter of conscience, also listed drug trafficking and social and economic injustices as modern sins.

But Girotti also bemoaned that fewer and fewer Catholics go to confession at all.

He pointed to a study by Milan’s Catholic University that showed that up to 60 percent of Catholic faithful in Italy stopped going to confession.

In the sacrament of Penance, Catholics confess their sins to a priest who absolves them in God’s name.

But the same study by the Catholic University showed that 30 percent of Italian Catholics believed that there was no need for a priest to be God’s intermediary and 20 percent felt uncomfortable talking about their sins to another person.

The Vatican can come up with new sins or all the sins; but it’s going to be useless unless the Vatican gets rid of its own sins within. The Vatican must get rid of hypocrisy and political interference in other countries. The Vatican should discipline and punish the corrupt Bishops in the Philippines.
The Vatican can never claim to be holy and doing the right thing if it looks the other way.

  8. The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we
have to love our neighbor. The Arroyo regime has completely divided our people, The Senate, The Congress, The Justice, The Military and now the Church. Im still clinging to my faith.

Save the future of our children and grandchildren’s children.

Duren, the reason why there’s no call for Arroyo’s resignation in this thread is because the Vatican just like the CBCP is in cahoot with Malacanang.

Under the Constitution, only the state can explore the natural resources. Your president through her department secretaries manipulated and circumvented the textual language from exploration to seismic study to give out the project among others to China for getting the lucrative commissions.

Your president is selling out the state natural resources, not to mention sending all OFWs abroad for exploitation and dramatize her policy of improving peso currency. Such exploitations are patently SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC INJUSTICES which is outlined in the Vatican Apostolic Penitentiary.

  14. d0d0ng d0d0ng

Oo nga naman, Duren…. don’t you see your president peddling OFWs and state’s natural resources as prostitutes??? Basta lang kikita si economic doctorate and pimp Gloria.

—-EXCERT from Statement of former PNOC president Eduardo V. Mañalac.

To inform you in the most straightforward manner possible, that my experiences before, during, and after the signing of the Joint Marine Seismic Undertaking (JMSU) involved:

    a) a sincere effort on the part of three governments to find common ground for cooperation involving the South China Sea area

    b) a desire to materialize this effort in terms of a concrete scientific study, the results of which could be of great value in determining over-all consequences for the region

    c) a common determination to cement the friendships formed by opening further discussions beyond the JMSU.

I can therefore say in all openness and honesty, that in my capacity as President of the Philippine National Oil Company and co-signatory of the JMSU along with the China National Offshore Oil Company, and Petrovietnam, that all actions taken under my watch were above board, technically sound, thoroughly investigated as to its legality, and approved unconditionally by the governments of the three countries involved.

Gloria Macapal Arroyo, a trained Harvard economist and classmate of US ex-president Bill Clinton has simple economic policy in this tiny country of almost 100 millions – EVERYTHING FOR SALE, from people (OFWs) to natural resources.

We tried hard to kick-out the American bases (protecting MNC’s interest) only to be replaced by the SELL-OUT economic policy of President Gloria Macapal Arroyo on OFWs, mining rights, oil explorations, etc….

    Great pimp nga si Gloria.

Singson said, “Hard facts and cold statistics cannot be finagled.” He compared data in 2001 with those of 2007 to show growth and a healthy financial position today. In 2001 our external debt was 68.3 percent of the gross national product (GNP), but today it’s only 36 percent. The debt shrank while GNP grew by 7.3 percent last year. Foreign debt service has been steadily declining: from 14.9 percent of our export and tourism receipts and overseas Filipino workers’ remittances in 2001, to 11.15 percent in 2006 and 9.45 percent in 2007.

An indication of our improved foreign debt situation is that we’re not utilizing as much official development assistance as before, and Philippine dollar-denominated bonds are now being traded abroad at big premiums. More savings are going into infrastructure spending around the country.

    * * *

Singson also noted that the budget deficit is now only nine percent, compared with 64 percent in earlier years. Unemployment stood at just 7.3 percent last year, helped in part by the fact that $5 billion to $6 billion is earned by business process outsourcing outfits, e.g., call centers, every year. As a result, per capita income in relation to GNP shot up to $913 last year from $725.7 in 2001.

The peso strengthened from 2001, when it was at 51.40 to the dollar, to 49.00 in January 2007 and 40.41 last week, an appreciation of 18.8 percent in one year. Singson said this was providential as it helped cushion the impact of skyrocketing oil prices; had the exchange rate remained flat, the price of gasoline would have shot up by P2.50 more per liter. It also proved helpful in our continuing heavy importation of rice and medicines.

Singson further noted that inflation was a benign 2.8 percent in 2007, and net international reserves were at an all-time high of $34.79 billion in January 2008, compared to $11.428 billion in 2001.

  19. Gloria is a combination of harmful pollutant of; nitride of oxygen (NOX)-Hydrocarbon (HC)-Carbon monoxide (C0)
    That’s poisoning: oxygen (o2) and water (h20).
Kailangan na siyang smogin sa malacanang dahil marami na ang naghihirap huminga.

  20. d0d0ng d0d0ng

Duren, I can understand the position of PNOC president Eduardo Manalac and his explanations. But the glaring and focal point is that, the agreement needs to change the language from “EXPLORATION” into “SEISMIC”. I proofread contracts too for legality. I think you need to face the mirror and ask why the need of changing the language, if you can manage to understand.

  21. duren duren

Proofreading is your profession, not witch-hunting. Kasi pag mayhinahanap na butas maghahanap ng maghahanap..kung walang makita, eh di gagawa…simple.

  22. d0d0ng d0d0ng

Duren, thank you for your hard facts and I agree those self-serving statistics are appropriately described as cold.

The foreign debt is declining. Thanks to strong peso (courtesy of OFW’s remittance) which paid off in greater value the foreign denominated loans. The other part of shrinkage in foreign debt, is kept from the public. Except of education funding, the largest part of the national budget is defense or military. US is keeping the philippine military afloat with aid in exchange of mobile base in the south (circumventing the fixed base resricted under the constitution). So there is no spike in national budget though military has its usual large part in the CB report, and no need for new foreign debt as in Singson’s words not utilizing as much official development assistance as before.

Singson’s statement of “more savings are going into infrastructure spending around the country” only means that more money will be made available for pork barrel to buy loyalties of family dominated congress protecting President Macapal Arroyo from impeachment.

  23. d0d0ng d0d0ng

Yes, budget deficit is now only nine percent, compared with 64 percent in earlier years. It is getting harder to steal taxpayers money with Filipinos clamoring for greater transparency with known exceptions in pork barrel (which is legal) and commission (which in Estrada’s plunder case considered not directly sourced from national budget).

To illustrate the point, when the Swiss court ordered Swiss banks to turnover 33 billions of Marcos loot to Philippine government, the sharks in Philippine government did not have to steal. So, congress passed the law designating the proceeds under Agrarian Reform. DBM reported that most of the proceeds were used during 2004 elections (buying votes through agrarian/fertilizer doleouts)which put Gloria Macapal Arroyo into presidency.

Duren, hard and cold facts na naman… na debunk na nga yang linyang yan sa mga previous postings, ano ba.. A third party study would be a credible basis of hard and cold facts, duren.. just read na lang the latest ADB and WB reports about your favorite president’s performance in improving daw our economy.

Mag-ingat ka sa mga economist/financial consultants na nagprepress release about our “very sound and strong fundamentals” — puro financial window dressing lately ang mga iyan kasi many of them need to justify to their institutional accounts and wealthy clients why they decided to invest part of their portfolio in our country para mabawasan ang kaba ng mga principals nila.

Maliban sa WB at ADB, research mo rin ang UNDP Human Development Index, PERC (for social and political risk analysis), at mga journals on business on socio-political analysis written by credible people na pinaniniwalaan — for starters Far Eastern Economic Review, Asian Wall Street, and the business pages of the Singapore Strait Times. Pati NEDA and NCSB kung hahalukayin mo, mapapansin mo na talagang window dressing ang mga macro-eco indicators and numbers na binabaggit mo — kaso lately karamihan ata ng mga importanteng documents and detailed stats na dati naka post sa mga web sites, biglang ngayon paiyakan humingi ng kopya or nawawala. Remember that the devil is in the details.

Thou shall not pollute the media with useless black propaganda against whistleblowers.

  26. d0d0ng d0d0ng

Duren you can choose to believe and feel Singson’s statements. Example that strong peso is providential in nature as it cushions pricing. Had the currency rate been weak to skyrocket local prices, then Gloria would have been gone by now, remove by the masses. That is how it becomes providential for Singson and Gloria to stay in power. Providential indeed for now!

It is amazing how Singson can distort facts like justifying heavy importation of rice to detriment of local farmers who depend so much on the sale of their rice produce.

Wait a second, the words ‘pope’ or even ‘cardinal’ are not ever mentioned in The Bible, so who are these guys who claim to speak for the Church? Gianfranco laments that 60% of Italian Catholics do not go to confession any more. Well, confession, too, is not mentioned in the bible except 10 times, none of them having to do anything with something you do in a church. Interesting to see how the last pope claimed Catholics can believe in evolution and how the current pope just commanded that global warming science be based on real science, not politicalized junk science.
    http://www.bible.ca/cath-new-doctrines.htm

I nominate a new sin of calling yourself a middle man between God and other people, instead of just a good Bible reading priest.

  31. I am not Catholic neither am I a Jehovah’s Witness, but the Vatican may just as well join the members of the Jehovah’s Witness in protesting against blood transfusion. At least, the Jehovah’s Witness has presented some spiritual basis for their protest, while the Vatican seems in a limbo as to why it is creating new sins for Catholics to repent about when in fact if they have been taught well of the sins enumerated in the Scriptures, I doubt if drug trafficking and prostitution would thrive in Catholic dominated countries like Columbia and the Philippines for instance, or a pygmy would be supported and cajoled by the CBCP.

The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the Lord, and say, Is not the Lord among us? none evil can come upon us.”(Micah 3: 11)

Girotti, in an interview headlined “New Forms of Social Sin,” also listed “ecological” offences as modern evils.

Ecology does not only imply physical environment, it may also refer to the political environment. Moral pollution in our political system is beyond control due to greed and desire to forever stay in power. Our children and young people are exposed to this reality, they are aware how politicians amass wealth from plundering government resources. For as long as this evil source of corruption shall not be abated, expect from their generation the next plunderer of the nation. Pagingatan lang ang ating mga kabataan, it’s a good thing na marami na sa kanila ngayon ang mulat at sumasama pa sa mga rally. We need to provide them a strong moral guidance as well as encourage them to do patriotic acts as a manifestation of their supreme love to their country.

I hope I am not off topic here. Just thinking aloud, molesting kids at the confessional must be an old sin. The older sins they can afford to pay up. I only hope the Vatican talk directly with what they mean here with the new sins. I am inclined to think what they mean with pollution is anything objectionable to the other guy. Like the thoughts of many bloggers. The CBCP tuloy ay ambiguous as always.

In Manila, the CBCP warns priests not to accept donations from firms promoting birth control or contraceptive products. The other day, two bishops declared that they would continue to accept donations from gambling sources because the money are for the needy. The question now is, are birth control products worse or more serious sins than gambling and alcohol?
Why is it okay for the church to accept donations from gambling and alcohol products and bad to accept companies that sell contraceptives? Another hypocrisy by the church!
