CBCP head rejects Arroyo’s call for ‘political ceasefire’

The head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) rejected over the weekend Malacañang’s call for a political ceasefire, once again stressing that the issue was about corruption.

CBCP president and Jaro archbishop Angel Lagdameo said the call for a change in government that he and four other bishops made is not for political but for moral change.

“Kung ang ating sinasabi ay pagpuna sa mga maling gawain, hindi lang naman yan sa government kundi sa lahat na pati sa lahat ng antas or level ng ating society. Sapagkat ang corruption ay hindi lang naman nasa gobyerno kundi maging sa iba’t-ibang antas ng ating society,” Lagdameo said over Church-run Radio Veritas.

(“Our calls against corruption apply not only to government but also to all sectors of society. Corruption is not only in government but also in many places in society.”)

Excerpts of the interview were posted Saturday on the CBCP website.

Lagdameo added what is needed is ceasefire on corruption currently plaguing not just in the government but in the society as a whole.

He said the uphill battle against corruption should continue and should not only be limited to government and political institutions.

President Arroyo earlier called for a “political ceasefire” amid left and right criticisms from the opposition, militant organizations and civil society groups.

She said the coming Yuletide season should encourage the Filipinos to “set aside personal differences and focus on improving the lives of the people.”

Last week, Lagdameo and four bishops issued a statement calling for a radical form in government, which he said is already stricken by a social and moral cancer called corruption.

“Itong pagtalikod sa gawang masama, pagtalikod sa pagawa ng korupsyon, pagtalikod sa kasalanan, yan ay patuloy na dapat na gawin. Ang call for conversion, call for change of mind, conversion of mind, conversion of heart ay dapat ipagpatuloy hanggang makarating tayo ng langit,” Lagdameo said.

(“Turning your back on evil and corruption should be done. This is a call for conversion of heart and mind.”)

But Lagdameo agreed with President Arroyo in saying there is a need for a ceasefire in politicking especially with the Christmas season just around the corner.

“Hindi lang dapat dahil sa nalalapit na ang Pasko. It should be for all times. Kinakailangan natin ay kapayapaan. Kinakailangan natin ay magandang pakikitungo at pakikiisa,” Lagdameo said.

I cant understand the issue. If the CBCP only makes up its mind it should always make it irrevocable. There should be no middle stream.

If Archbishop Angel Lagdameo and the head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) are quite serious for a change in government, they should be out on the street with their flocks protesting against the moral cancel called corruption created by wh*re Gloria Arroyo and hubby pimp Mike. Also, it would be a great test to see if the majority of the people would agree to a radical change in govt. Just issuing statement is not going to do it, must be followed with strong action to be effective without a ceasfire. People has already waited eight years, now is the moment to rid of the hoodlums in stinking Malacanang.

Hopefully, the CBCP ain’t just talking to be heard. Perhaps, they should’ve an open mass at Edsa and collection for the poor, that should bring out in millions of sympathisers.

Are this the same CBCP at one time were in Luneta Park some years back when they supported the wh*re, if I recall? What make them believable now? Are they bored, I wonder? I guess, they need to do something very spectacular to get their flocks back in church. We shall see how far the CBCP will pursue this radical change in govt. It would be interesting or just same old bs that we already heard many times before.

That’s a big BS!

“Lagdameo added what is needed is ceasefire on corruption currently plaguing not just in the government but in the society as a whole.” I would like to know from father Lagdameo, and to explain what he meant by a ceasefire on corruption. Sounded like some mambo-jambo jargon to me.

I read that wh*re Gloria is going to New York and stopping in Chicago to a pay a surprise visit to Obama. Oooops, I meant Pinoy community. Is it true the wh*re called Obama three times and Obams never return the call? Walang hiya talaga, masyadong makapal ang mukha. Maybe the CBCP would pray and put in a good words for the wh*re. I hope the wh*re doesn’t forget the brown bags when she stop in Chicago, it sure would help.

Gloria Arroyo, the bogus Philippine president, tried to call US president-elect Barack Obama to congratulate him for his historic presidency. After failing to get through to him , she texted him.

    Obama replied, “Hu u?”

    Valdemar,

It is very unfortunate that CBCP’s decisions are no longer irrevocable. Malacanang infected them, they now either change or retract their statements.

CBCP’s are now Corrupted Bishops by Corrupt Politicians – that’s how I see them now. Most of them are quiet when corruption is at its worst. I also suspect that they were part of an international conspiracy that ousted our president in 2001 when corruption was not as worse.

  27. Elvira Elvira

Achbishop Lagdameo and Co. should really put their words into ACTION! In that way, we’ll know if the people are willing to support them. If they ignore the Bishops call, time for the latter to retire in Peace! People deserve what this Peke and CORRUPT regime is offering them!
    Magkasubukan na nga!

If it is true that GMA is persistent with her attempts to personally talk to President Elect Obama, that is unbecoming of her. If Obama wanted to talk to her, he will RETURN the Call in some appropriate time and in order of priority. He already talked with leaders of the G-7 and most where he will be discussing the Global economy which is the priority of the world’s responsible leaders.

For now, settle down, GMA and if you have something substantial to talk about, maybe, but again maybe not. to the eyes of the other world leaders, associating with you would not look good to their Filipino communities.

Re Bishop Lagdameo and the four bishops putting their words into action, they have done so by refusing to be co-opted by Gloria Arroyo.

Lagdameo refused the offer of Malacañang (through Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya) of financial aid. That was action.

The Bishops with conscience made their call. Now, it’s up for other sectors to respond and do the action.

Are you sure nothing is being done? How come Gloria Arroyo is so praning, she has to have mass said at midnight last Friday?

  30. rose rose

Tama..dapat Lagdameo should take the first step..get out of that Bishop’s palace..and walk to Aviles…I am sure people will follow and meet them..from Mendiola, Sta Mesa, etc. malayo layo ang Edsa shrine from the bishops palace..Bishop Lagdameo just take the first step..and many of your flock will follow..they would hear your voice…Isn’t it that Jesus, the Good Shepherd himself said…”I know my flock and my flock knows me..They hear my voice”? well..do your flock know you?

  31. rose rose

Gloria and I have two things in common now…we are both putot (4’11) and hati ang katawan kung hating gabi…

sana mangyari ito bago Lunes..in the next two weeks wala akong access to TV, internet etc..Bishop Lagdameo make it soon..sabi mo NOW! isama mo na rin ang mga pari sa Ateneo and include the new member of Gloria’s family si Fr.

  35. I just talked to my old friend, future Obama Chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel.

    TT: Rahm!
    RE: Hey, Tongue my man!
TT: Just curious, why isn’t Barack returning Gloria Arroyo’s calls?
RE: Uh, sorry ’bout that guys, really, but we’ll be calling absolutely everyone. We just call by ORDER OF IMPORTANCE, ya’ know.
    TT: Oh, that’s good.
RE: Our secretary says she’s been burning our lines trying to pitch her economic credentials, her accomplishments, that she’s available to give expert economic and military advice for free, and that she’s got three cute little puppies ready to fly to Chicago in a minute’s notice. We’re actually calling her soon. According to our schedule, that would be BY NEXT SUMMER.

  36. On the topic, that’s the problem with these bishops. They call a presscon calling for government change and when everyone is already titillated by the idea, they change it to everybody’s change!

Damn. Like calling for a protest rally that changes into a thanksgiving rally. WTF?

  37. Another bishop calls for “radical change”.

MANILA, November 9, 2008–“Radical change” has to be pushed through to uplift the country’s poor, said the head of the Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice, and Peace of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)

This was said by Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo during the 76th Alumni Homecoming of San Carlos Seminary, in Makati City November 3, with the theme “Saksi ng Pag-Asa, Ebanghelyo sa Sambayanan”.

“There are three major issues confronted by the rural poor: good governance, land, and environment. Nothing is new about these issues, except that ‘radical change’ has to be pushed through in order to uplift their lives,” said Pabillo who is the chairman of the National Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA) of CBCP.

“On good governance, there is a need for transparency and involvement in the parishes, political education, campaigning for truth, and monitoring of taxes and public funds. There are laws that are supposed to uplift the lives of the rural poor, yet remain improperly attended or unimplemented,” Pabillo said.

Environment, organic farming and small-and-medium-economic activities should be promoted, he stressed.

“The spirituality of stewardship should be stressed, and the campaign against dynamite fishing, mining, and logging should be pushed through evenly. Concerning land, there should be extension of the CARP, discussion of issues on ancestral domains (i.e. of Muslims and indigenous people), and support for fisher folks and farmers,” he said.

Pabillo talked on the Second National Rural Congress (NRC-II), which was a convocation of more than 300 participants, representing the clergy and the rural poor, organized by CBCP last July 7-8, 2008 here in San Carlos Seminary, Makati.

Until I see them, CBCP or any spokeperson(s) representing the CBCP on the street and putting their words into action, I would say that they’re just blowing hot air. I still think this CBCP’s are bored and got nothing else to do, need some attention, since most of their flocks are leaving their once a sacred place, now even such places has been corrupted by the wh*re. Nothing in the Philippines is no longer sacred, it has been contaminated since the illegal govt of the wh*re has been forced onto the people. Ever since then, everything the wh*re touches started to go down. Getting up again is almost to impossibility, since it has been badly damaged to unrecovery condition.

“Radical change” has to be pushed through to uplift the country’s poor…” Ok CBCP, supposing the people’s believe what you saying, how do you intend to implement the radical change in the govt? You got the problem, how would you apply the solution, CBCP? Just blowing smoke through the stack ain’t enough.

  39. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Same bs that we all heard many times before now being spilled by the CBCP. The convocatin of more than 300 participants, representing the clergy and the rural poor, organized by CBCP last July 7-8, 2008 in San Carlos Seminary, Makati, should’ve been held at Edsa instead, anything short is a waste.

Nothing is new about these issues, is definitely correct.

Political ceasefire when it suits the impakta!

To the Bishop Lagdameo’s group: Paki tapusin na ho ninyo ang inyong sinimulan.

  54. the call of the four bishops (plus, bishop pabillo later on)for radical reform should not be understood as the official stand of the cbcp. they were clear about it in the press conference. some of us do not distinguish the difference and ellen seems not keen to correct this mistake.

are the bishops prophetic in their call for change? in the tradition of the prophets, they (a) denounced corruption as a moral and social cancer which is endemic, massive, systematic and rampant in the government; and (b) announced the task to build up an alternative new government that is radically different from the corrupt arroyo’s administration.

love is in the deeds of love. yes, many of us are asking for the presence of the bishops in the street protest (preferably edsa or mendiola) and get disappointed when they opted for another form of protest. just because they refused to lock arms with us in the street, we often doubt their sincerity in denouncing the abuses of gloria’s regime.

military people have different way of looking at reality from that of the bishops’ and, consequently, they have different mode of action in addressing the issue at hand. the problem arises when a military man started to think of and use his mode of action as normative and whatever plan of action that deviates from it is considered as hypocrisy — all talks about corruption but devoid of concrete actions.

lastly, i think there is a deeper root for anti-religious sentiments among those who unfairly criticize the bishops (cbcp and catholic church) in their call for radical reform.

  55. deepcaring,
You are confusing me. Is there no official stand by the bishops against corruption? What you are saying is that the CBCP does not agree with denouncing corruption!

Your next point, an alternative new government radically different from corrupt Arroyo’s is simply corollary to the first. When you denounce something, you must change it if it exists, or prevent it from happening if it does not.

You are therefore wrong. That statement IS and what shoud be the official statement of the CBCP regardless of who’s president. Those bishops who say otherwise are the exceptions not the rule.

    Let’s get that clear.

  56. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

“..the call of the four bishops (plus, bishop pabillo later on)for radical reform should not be understood as the official stand of the cbcp…”

Holy cow! The bishops called for radical reform, because of social and moral cancer called corruption in the govt, as to their own definition of disease in the got. Clear as a bell, as I see it, they’re no mistaken on the bishops stand on the issue. Yet, Deepcaring is now saying the bishops were being unfairly criticized, and that what they said is actually not their official stand on the issue of corruption? Since most us missed the conference, perhaps Deepcaring you can enligthen us plain folks, what the bishops really meant by radical change in govt. How should be implemented and who should take the lead on this radical reform. Do you have any suggestion?

Moreover, lets put everything in proper perspective, as the messenger of god with religious mission and understanding of the Philippines constitution, is it proper for the bishops be making political statement as they did?

Furthermore, the statement Bishops made could be interpreted in many ways by the people. It can literally taken as a direct message to the people to take arms, incite a riot to overthrow a corrupt govt of wh*re Gloria Arroyo. Or, perhaps a forewarning by the bishops to the people and to Gloria of incoming street demonstration against corrupt govt of Gloria before Christmas.

So, what’re the bishops have in mind, if any?

  57. chi chi

For me, what the good bishops (4 then 5) said was simple: the government is suffering from stage 4 of cancer due to corruption. Therefore, kung maisasalba pa, we need a radical change in the government and let’s start with Gloria (ayaw lang kasing tukuyin nina bishop e).

“Never Say Never”. Translation: Huli man daw at magaling, huli pa rin, hehe.

  58. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

    deepcaring:

Below are your own written words. It seemed like double talk or conflicting statement. On one hand, you said, radical reform might not be the official stand of the cbcp. Yet, on the other hand, you said, not to doubt cbcp’s sincerity in denouncing the abuses of gloria’s regime. I’d would assume, according to you, cbcp quite sincere of what their statement against Gloria, or not really? Which is which?

“bishops for radical reform should not be understood as the official stand of the cbcp.”

‘..just because they refused to lock arms with us in the street, we often doubt their sincerity in denouncing the abuses of gloria’s regime.”
