Kayo ba ay tapos na sa inyong Christmas shopping? Kung hindi pa, pareho tayo.
Hanggang ngayon, hilong-hilo na ako at marami pa akong hindi nabibili. Grabe ang traffic. Minsan nakakatulog na ako sa bus sa sobrang bagal ng biyahe.
Noong isang gabi, sa Makro sa Cubao kami pumunta para bumili ng pang-raffle sa Christmas party. Grabe ang haba sa cashier. Kung hindi pa kami nagreklamo, hindi nila dinagdagan ang cashier.
Mabuti ang ibang may pera at panahon, Oktubre pa lang tapos na ang kanilang shopping sa Divisoria. Nakakamura pa sila.
Marami naman sa atin hindi nagagawa yan dahil sa naghihintay pa tayo ng 13th month pay o Christmas bonus . Kaya ngayon, nakikipagsiksikan.
Ganyan talaga ang Christmas sa Pilipinas. Ngunit kahit mahirap, nakakatuwa kasi ramdam na ramdam mo ang kapaskuhan, mahirap man o mayaman.
Dahil nga sa lumaki ako sa probinsiya at mahirap lang kami, mababa ang aking standard sa Pasko. Kung walang hamon o mansanas, hindi ako nagpu-problema dahil noong bata kami sa aming baryo, wala naman hamon at mansanas doon sa amin.
Sa probinsiya, kumukuha lang kami ng kung ano-anong kahoy para sa aming Christmas tree. Ang mahalga lang, maganda ang sanga. Papel de hapon ang ginagawa naming dekorasyon. Wala kasi kaming makikintab na bola sa baryo.
Ang karaniwang naming handa ay arroz valenciana., suman sa ibos, tsokolate at manggang hinog.
Naala-ala ko kasama sa mga regalo na kinakabit namin ay mga butong-butong (gawa sa muskovado na asukal) na korteng ibon, pato at bulaklak. Nagsisimba kami sa misa de gallo. Paggaling sa simbahan, sisindihan namin ang mga naipong tupong mga dahon sa tabi ng kalsada at magkwentuhan.
Masaya na kami sa ganun.
Nakakatulong rin siguro ang mga malungkot na Christmas na aking naranasan sa aking pagpahalaga ng mga relasyon sa kapwa tao kaysa mga materyal na mga bagay. Nang highschool ako sa Iloilo, nagkasakit ang aming nanay at itinakbo namin sa hospital mga dalalwang araw bago mag Pasko. Dalawa lang kami ng aking nakakabatang kapatid ang kasama nag aking ina.
Pinilit ng nanay namin na lumabas umaga ng Pasko para kahit papa-ano sa bahay kami magkasama. Wala kaming handa ngunit okay lang kasi gumaling siya.
Sa akin ang pinakamagandang pamasko ay ang kalusugan. Noong 2003, nalaman kong may kanser ako Nobyembre kaya nagke-chemotherapy ako Pasko ng taon na yun. Naala-ala ko na minsan may nakita akong bata na naghahalungkat ng basura at sabi ko, mapalad pa rin ang batang ito kasi malusog siya.
Marami pa rin tayong dapat ipasalamat sa gitna ng kahirapan na ating dinadanas. Maligayang Pasko!
The Catholic Church recently criticized people for commercialization of Christmas. Yet, it is the church that allows and even encourage it. Look around inside and outside of the church premises. Go to Quiapo and Baclaran…you can see they allow vendors to ply their trades that include selling birth control devices. Who started the Santa Claus, Christmas Tree and gift giving? If you check on their origins, you’d see that they are of pagan origins. Even Christmas is said to be not biblical. They say Jesus was never born in December.
On another topic, the Bishops reacted strongly at Speaker Nograles’ comments. Here’s one:
“We are not talking about fallibility. This is a matter of morals and bishops talk about the morality of political issues,” Vidal’s spokesman Msgr. Achilles Dakay said.
“We did not say that we are infallible. We can say something right in matters of morals,” Dakay said. “Why did they listen to Cardinal Sin? Why did they listen to the bishops on Erap? When do they want to listen? Why do they want to listen?”
People’s generosity and charitable acts appear during Christmas Season. Love, genuine or not, is the most popular word we hear at Christmas. Forgiveness is another popular word. But, why only during Christmas? Aren’t we supposed to love one another each day of the year? There goes hypocrisy not only materialism and commercialism during Christmas. Such tradition was handed down to us for centuries. Without knowing the history of Christmas, people celebrate it just because many do. But then, just because majority practice something popular and taken from tradition means it is correct. I’m not here to destroy the spirit of Christmas because even if my intention is good, many would be offended. It’s very hard for people to stop a practice that has been taught to them by their parents, grandparents and great grandparents. Let’s love one another not only on Christmas, but every day of our life. This was what Christ taught.
May natitira pa pang-shopping? Magastos ang Pasko lalo na sa maraming ina-anak. Sa amin noon puede na ang arroz caldo pang noche buena. Masaya na kami at kuntento sa aming salo-salo. Naragsak nga Paskua yo amin Apo! Maligayang Pasko!

I expected such reactions above. First of all, just because the topic is about Christmas doesn’t mean I cannot express my opinion about Christmas.
Look at the Encyclopedia of Early Christianity. It says “The exact date of Christ’s birth is not known.” Still, millions of professed Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25. However, the date appears nowhere in the Bible.
It was only hundreds of years after Christ’s death that December 25 was chosen as the date of His birth. The Christmas season was actually a period when pagan festivities were celebrated. The date was chosen to correspond to pagan festivals that took place around winter when the days began to lengthen, to celebrate the “rebirth of the sun”…the Roman Saturnalia (a festival dedicated to Saturn, the god of agriculture, and to the renewed power of the sun), also took place at this time.
Many like Chi feel that regardless of what the actual date is, Christians should commemorate Christ’s birth; but nowhere in the Bible does it say Christ’s birth should be celebrated. Worse, December 25 coincides with pagan festival. Pagan is defined as unchristian. Remember that not every tradition and celebration no matter how popular is right in the eyes of God. For the same reason, fiestas are a waste of poor Catholics’ money. People celebrate Fiestas for the same reason…it’s tradition.

For me, this Season is all about Love, family reunion and thanking God for sending His only begotten Son to save mankind. Discussion about Christmas is endless just like other religious topics. I invite everyone to just look at the word “Christmas” in the dictionary and the definition is right there. May Love and Peace be with All !”
Pasko is pecuniary glitter and gift giving gimmicks, but hardly a thought about the spirit of the occasion — the birth of Christos the redeemer. I would have wished that the Golden Rule stated in the Sermon on the Mount be the guiding principle of Pinoys and all Mankind all year round.
Many use the Golden Rule and Law of Karma. The commandment “Love thy neighbor” is the strongest of all. That’s why I also love the woman who’s my neighbor.
In our church, we do celebrate Christmas, too, as we remember the sacrifices done by Jesus Christ to save mankind, but the truth is we believe that Jesus Christ was not born on December 25, but on some spring day when the Romans started the policy of taxing all living in Israel, demanding that they register in their places of origin, the reason why Joseph and Mary took the long journey on a donkey to Bethlehem from Nazareth where they lived.
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir in fact is known for their Christmas carols. We just had finished watching the broadcast of the LDS Christmas presentation in SLC this year. I love listening to Handel’s “Messiah” in fact at this time of the year.
I have decorated my garden with a Santa Carousel that little kids around the area love to see with their Moms. I see a number of houses over here being lighted up in fact after I did my illuminations. I doubt if they even realize why Christmas is being observed.
Christmas Eve, I’m celebrating not just Christmas but also the birth of my son, who is turning 25 this year. We’ve parted ways, but I pray that he will remember how much I love him.
I usually go to the USA to celebrate Christmas with my folks but this year, I have decided to welcome Christmas and the New Year at my new house. Fortunately, I don’t have so-called “god-children” to worry about. Less expense!
I am cooking the usual Christmas meals–turkey, cake, cookies, pies, (western style), pansit and biko (Filipino style). Zen2, et al, if you are around, give me a call.

Well explained…but, why celebrate Christmas on December 25 when you don’t believe it’s the date of Christ’s birth? I’m a bit confused here.
Here’s why December 25 was adopted as the date for celebrating His birth: Jesus was born in the Judean city of Bethlehem. In Luke 2:4-8: “There were also in that same country shepherds living out of doors and keeping watches in the night over their flocks.” This was not unusual. “The flocks had to spend the greater part of the year in the open air.” But, would the shepherds be outside with their flocks on a cold December night…in the snow? In the same book of Luke 2:1-3, “In those days a decree went forth from Caesar Augustus for all inhabited earth to be registered; and all people went traveling to be registered, each one to his own city.” Augustus probably ordered this registration as a census in order to gather information for use in connection with taxation and military conscription. To comply with the order, Mary, despite being heavy with child, accompanied her husband, Joseph, on the journey of some 150 kilometers from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Think about this. Does it seem likely that Augustus, a ruler who rarely interfered with local government, would require people who were already inclined to revolt to make such a long trip in winter?
One explanation of the origin of the date is that December 25 was the Christianizing of the “dies solis invicti nati (day of the birth of the unconquered sun, a popular holiday in the Roman Empire that celebrated the winter solstice as a symbol of the resurgence of the sun, the casting away of winter and the heralding of the rebirth of spring and summer.

Philippines is incomparable when it comes to celebration of Christmas season. You really can feel the spirit of the season with members of the family friends and relatives kahit ano lang ang mapagsaluhan. Not like over here there’s so much foods but it’s so drab and boring and where the temperature is so cold that makes you feel so lazy and just want to stay indoors. Can you imagine that just to put your garbage on the curve or pick up a newspaper at the corner you have to wrap yourself with warm clothing? Sometimes you can’t understand why some Filipinos especially those corrupt politicians are coming over here during the season when it’s more enjoyable to spend the season back there. Maybe because they have so much excess money and they don’t know where to dispose off.
For more than 25 years we were not able to spend Christmas and New Year in the Philippines, and oh boy how we missed it. Every year we spend our holidays back home but never during the season because of workloads. My husband besides being employed as an Accountant we operate a small accounting and financial consulting business and it’s this time that we begin our busiest work schedules being the last month of the year preparing paper works for the year-end financial statements and getting inquiries and appointments for income tax preparations. There’s no way we can get away from it or else the few clients we got will go somewhere else.
Anyway, I intended to just drop by to extend my best wishes for the holidays, but, well… A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year na lang sainyong lahat!

Go underneath a tree, a quiet hillside, the riverbanks and pray. Let the greedy politicians gave their looted money to the church for the enjoyment of the bishops.
For those who subscribe to the doctrine of the bible – explain why only the “good phrases or sayings” are always instilled to it’s subjects. The killings are not brought upon during masses. Was baptized a catholic, embraced the Anglican church during my teens, and presently lost – never been to mass in a long time.

I want us all to be happy and enjoy this season for we are better off than most of the recessed countries. Ellen has mirrored me in her life experience of her Christmases. I have brought all things provincial to Manila even the malunggay stem and little sack of rice that will be an extender to our noche buena. We wont have much cholesterol to worry of as usual. That will extend a little bit my life span doodled with x marks on the calendar for check ups with my elevated prostate, liver, alzheimers that started early, oops, I forgot the rest. We should be happier really for this time of the year, I call it the moribund season for there are just redundant family deaths they claim whenever I ask back people the little loans I gave on their crises days earlier. Like ninongs who are out of town.
The Celebration of Christmas (Christ’s Birthday) in December 25 is just a Tradition established to commemorate the birth. It is kind of hard to exactly know the actual date when during those time, there was not a single recording and even the year would be just an estimate. Actually we had been celebrating our brother’s birthday in a wrong date, until he got his Birth Certificate for Employment purposes and found out that it was in the different date. My mother was not even sure and told us the wrong date..hehehe..anyways we will be having a White Christmas as there is already about 50 Cm. of snow on the ground and more coming down. unless the temps suddenly turn way above zero, they will remain on the ground past Christmas.
My Christmas gift giving is already done, a trip to PNB remittance for the Love Ones back home and that’s all I can afford..Merry Christmas to all and to All a Prosperous 2009…

When I was little, we always had avocado tea on the table, kasama ng suman wrapped in coconut leaves, matamis na mangga galing sa plantation ni Lolo at halayang ube na nanggaling din sa tanim ni ama ko. Yun dahon ng avocado na ang lalapad ay pinipitas lang namin sa aming bakuran. Walang kasing saya na Pasko, hindi komersyalas. Regalo? Hindi yata uso sa amin yan noon, hehe.
Vic, Jesus was born around April. He could not have been born on a winter, month of December, when shepherds didn’t go out to attend to the flocks which the Bible mentioned. This alone was more than evidence that December was picked as Christ’s birth but to coincide with the celebration of pagan festival, pagan God of the Sun…Sol Invictus.
And while you Vic, grizzy and Rose were very civil and respectful of one’s opinion and belief, this Golberg posed some strong and challenging reactions. To him I say…I was born a Catholic, grew up a Catholic, educated in Catholic schools…but shall not die as a Catholic.
Why should there be a debate if it isn’t the exact day for Christmas? You could celebrate it in summer for all I care. The Jews, from where Jesus comes from, don’t even celebrate Christmas. But they celebrate Hannukah on the same day. They don’t have Xmas trees, but they have Hannukah trees. I just saw yesterday on TV the Aetas celebrating Xmas, too. They cook their best food in bamboos, wear their tribal garb, and dance to “Dayang-dayang” played on the MP3 player. They’re not even Christians.
What’s nice is that almost everyone in the world, regardless of faith, sets a day in every year to unite in commemorating the birth of the Savior. Or at least respect and join those who believe in him. It’s insensitive enough that someone flaunts his biblical knowledge here to make us all look stupid and make himself feel good.
Don’t let bitchevil spoil your holiday mood.
(Btw, the Chinese calendar doesn’t have Dec. 25, yet they celebrate Christmas)

That’s the common mentality when it comes to discussion about Christmas just as what Tongue said. Who cares if Jesus was born in December or any month of the year? That’s the problem when people fail to check the history of a celebration or holiday that has religious significants. Not only was it impossible for Jesus to be born in a winter; it coincided with the festivity of a pagan God. Now, who cares about this coincidence? Well, it was even more than a coincidence because it was timed on a date just to attract more people to join the church using a pagan festival. I had the same mentality before. Now, I’m wiser. I don’t just follow the people of the world even if it’s popular if I know it’s wrong. Merry New Year to All !

Sinabi mo pa, Tongue. Over in Japan, majority of the people are not Christians, but the confectioner companies have succeeded in introducing the tradition of celebrating Christmas Eve with a roast chicken and strawberry cake named “Christmas Cake.” Nag-order na nga ako ng Christmas cake sa Costco.
Golly, ang kita ng KFC at this time of the year sa totoo lang! Di rin pahuhuli ang MacDonald with its Macnuggets, etc. At least, workalcolic parents are forced to come home early and observe Christmas with their kids. Pag di nabili iyong mga roast chicken at saka cake, then, we know there is real recession in Japan, too. Lagot si PM Aso. Pihado magre-resign din iyan soon.
Si Magnanakaw kapal talaga ng mukha. Pinagyayabang pa ang improved economy daw ng mga pilipino kahit na sa guni-guni lang niya. Yuck!

The ultimate question is do we need Christmas? Who need Christmas? Many do! Because Christmas even though has a controversial origin can bring us closer to the Savior, and He is the only source of lasting joy. We need Christmas because it helps us to be better people, not only in December but in January, June, and November. Because we need Christmas we had better understand what it is and what it isn’t. Gifts, holly, mistletoe, and red-nosed reindeer are fun as traditions, but they are not what Christmas is really all about. If we accept the above as guidance in celebration, then fine.

Chi: I am curious about the avocado tea..just was introduced to the apple tea and like it so much..but the sad thing is I don’t know where to get them here..don’t know if I should boil the skin of the apple or not…with the avocado should I use the leaves and boil? a friend gave an avocado picked from her garden in Florida..planted the seed and it grew but the trunk is so thin and I transplanted it to a bigger pot but in the process must have damaged the plant and the leaves are getting dried..I am thinking of boil the leaves and make it into tea..should work..
The guava tea is good for those with diabetes too.
..for the last two days we had a couple of inches of snow..but cold as it is..it is getting to be a lot like Christmas..and makes me feel like a child once again..we had the ati-atihan practice for the kids (mostly Visayans) this morning and it was so refreshing to see them do the dinadyang..pati ako napaindak..a kid again (on my second childhood?)..and isn’t it what Christmas is all about..celebrating the birthday of the Child Jesus..and making us all feel the child in us? Merry Christmas. This is the time when I miss the Philippines the most. It is good to be able to say Merry Christmas without offending anybody.
It is so goddamn politically correct here in the USA, that everybody says Happy Holidays. True, there are Jews and Arabs here, but the majority are Christians – Italians, Irish, Poles, Russians, Latinos, Noy-Pi, Korean Evangelicals. Despite our overwhelming number, we have to kowtow to political correctness.So it is a real pleasure to wish you all a Merry Christmas; lalong-lalo na sa mga OFW.
Maririnig na naman ang national anthem ng OFW – I’ll Be Home For Christmas ni Elvis. They will be warmed by the company of good ole Johnny (Walker) or Carlos (Primero – brandy), instead of their families. As that Vilma Santos film said, “Inaalagaan ko ang anak ng iba, gayong hindi man mayakap ang sariling anak.”

Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon sa lahat! Each of us celebrate the holiday in different ways. For me, this year, I am joining the majority of the global populace in refraining from gift buying except for my immediate family and some unfortunate kids. It is recession and maybe this time, it is best to just celebrate the birth of Jesus in a very humble way. Jesus was born in a manger made of straws. The celebration of his birthday became commercialized later. It does not really matter how we celebrate the occasion as long as we honor Him and enjoy the season with our loved ones.
