    Great article, Ellen!!!

Or even tawagin na drug capital ng mundo. Lets just be proud of them!

  3. “The publishers and editors of HK Magazine wish to apologize unreservedly for any offense that may have been caused by Tsao’s column dated March 27,” Reading the satire of their apology, I have this feeling that they are rubbing it in, not being contrite. Print media editors have traditionally disallowed or censored objectionable material from publication for fear it hurts circulation. HK magazine allowed it to be printed, with malice aforethought, is my gut feel. The sensational tone of the article was intended to boost circulation. Shades of an outrageous article by Malu Fernandez, a corpulent columnist of Manila Standard. Today newspaper.

  4. Look who’s talking? For the record, China was once the largest producer of overseas contract workers who built the train stations in the United States, who worked in the mines of central Asia, and the country that established the most number of so-called Chinatowns in the World.

  5. Rey Chai Rey Chai

Sa mga pulitikong nagbabalat sibuyas tungkol sa komento ng cheap tsao na ito ito’y isang hamon lamang sa napakaliit na tingin ng mga banyaga sa atin. it’s not the first time even before when Arroyo withdraw Her support with united States one of the official from UK comment that Philippines are the land of Domestic Helper. which is true but really hard to accept.

  7. myrna myrna

read the column of lito banayo today, and somehow you tend to empathise with the plight of filipina domestic workers in hongkong.

  8. Fr Teody Ermita Sr:

  9. No one to blame but the Evil Bitch since she’s the number one exporter of Filipino maids.

  10. Kulas Kulas

  12. i think iyong tawagin na ‘nation of servants’ eh hindi masyadong masakit eh… after all, we are all serving for the pleasure of the EVIL BITCH.

don ako actually nakaramdam ng pang-iinsulto at galit. i could only imagine how Luisa is suffering at the hands of this MONSTER! sana ito muna ang pagtuunan ng pansin ng ating mga nagmamagaling na officials. check Luisa’s conditions.

  13. Derek A. Derek A.

We have to own this for it to empower us.

  14. patria adorada patria adorada

industrialization and food sufficientcy ang dapat natin pagtuunan ng pansin hindi more OFW for a quick return of investment.ito lang ang paraan upang mabawi natin ang ating dangal bilang isang FILIPINO.what we need now is a leader who is nationalistic in nature.

  15. Valdemar Valdemar

Umasenso naman pala si Luisa. Tanggalin siya sa tolet detail. Ililipat pala siya sa master bedroom siguro.

Pati employer, may screening.

  17. Golberg Golberg

“We will give you super maids.”

  19. With regard to those Filipinos who view, take or accept Chip Tsao’s cheap shot at the Filipino nation with a shrug of the shoulder saying Tsao’s public rubbishing of the Filipino nation is a form of satire, I say to them, it is the coward’s easy way out.

There’s nothing remotely satirical when a foreigner uses a public or popular forum/vessel to whip up racial slurs against another race of people.

Allow me to insist that those who claim that Chip Tsao’s piece is satirical is way over their head and are seriously lagging behind in matters of intellectual prowess.

To them, I say, “When in a hole, stop bloody digging!”

  20. What do you think about the saying “There are no Masters if there are no willing Servants or Slaves”?

  21. Mike Mike

Heard in the news earlier. Chip Tsao doesn’t have a Filipino maid named Louisa. What he has are 2 Indonesian maids. However, his father has a Filipina maid named Louisa. The consul general in HK also said that they have indeed talked to Louisa who has been working for Chip Tsao’s father for about 14 years already, she said that she has no plan of leaving her present employer and that she is clueless about the article that Chip has written. She also said that she was treated well by the family.

  22. Mike Mike

The article of Chip Tsao has been removed from the HK magazine website.

Hoy! Gising!

  25. Noel Noel

The Pilipinos are being disrespected, attacked and oppressed by even a nobody like Chip Tsao. His writing shows he has no character at all.

I know I’ll be attacked here again for I’m about to say. I don’t care. Nobody is afraid of Pilipinos because we don’t stand up (fight) for our rights. We are so passive and take blows to any part of the Pilipino body or psyche’ without any repercussions to the inflictor(s). Why is this happening? Pilipinos are not united, that’s why.

For advocating Pilipino unity, I was attacked here. Someone even called Pilipino unity as my pipe dream. I did promise not to post here anymore. Not because I’m afraid of being attacked. My decision was based on my thinking that this is not the proper forum for me to advocate Pilipino unity. I’m, however, making an exception. I now believe that some of you also believe that the way to achieve political and economic empowerment for the Pilipinos is through unity. It will be good enough if I’m able to reach even a few of you.

It is time for all Pilipinos to protest all the injustices they are suffering. Go out and protest. It is your right to express dissent. Protect your rights as citizens and as human beings. Tell us, Pilipinos abroad, how we can help you.

  26. I don’t think you’re being stopped from expressing your view here, Noel. If you read all the posts about the issue, you shall find that some believe the writer even if he’s an idiot has some legitimate points.

I myself find Filipinos too soft. In other countries, protests against the government are common. The protesters are not scared to meet the Police head on. Some do it violently like Thailand. Some are worse with suicide bombers just to express their positions politically. I’m not calling for similar movements. What I want is to see the same kind of people and crowd who participated in the past two Edsas. Today, the “I don’t care” attitude is louder than those who shout “Oust Gloria”. They cannot oust her if they say and shout it inside their comfortable air conditioned rooms.

  27. The so-called HK Magazine apology goes, “The column in question was satirical. One aspect of satire is that it can at times be read in different ways. In this particular case, many people have read meanings into this column that were never actually intended.

Who are they kidding? “As a magazine, we would never want to say anything that would negate that belief.” That was one slimy about face, something you can expect from Chinks whose brains were so emaciated by yellow fever and bird flu.

They never actually intended the racial slurs they printed? They call this apology? Bullocks!

Until we hear a melancholic mea culpa from the mouth of their writer himself in voice and in print, we should take the above lil piece of trash paper for what it is — an example of execrable Chinese dung! Filthy lil creeps that’s what they are!

  28. Noel Noel

To Bitchevil. If I want to express my views anywhere, I will despite opposition(s). But, when I’m pushing for an agenda as important as Pilipino unity, I better choose the forum where I can generate much support and where the group
    can make an effective impact.

I agree with you when you said: “‘Oust Gloria’. They can not oust her if they say and shout it inside their comfortable air-conditioned rooms.”

I also agree with you, it is now time to go out in the streets and protest like what we did during Marcos’ Martial Law.

  29. I also agree with you, it is now time to go out in the streets and protest like what we did during Marcos’ Martial Law.–Noel
    ======================================================

If you do that now,the illegal tenant in Malacanang might as well kiss your ass. She’s looking for an opportunity to declare Martial Law.

Arroyo will need a ‘riot’ in order to declare martial law and will require martial law to justify her crackdowns on dissent and ‘civil disturbance’. The right wing’s relationship to dissent mirrors that of Arroyo’s relationship to ‘terrorism’. Arroyo, in fact, is nothing without terrorism and civil disturbance and her policies can be shown to be the cause of it. Thus –she will and does manufacture it!

A ‘national emergency’ will provide Arroyo the raw power she needs to cancel the elections and hold on to even greater executive power. Over the course of her criminal and illegitimate regime; Gloria Arroyo has assumed powers that in cases of a ‘national emergency’ make of her an absolute ruler beyond the powers of the Congress or the Courts. It has all been locked up rather neatly and planned well in advance. A ‘decider’ by self-proclamation, Arroyo conveniently ‘decides’ what is and what is not a ‘national emergency. She is the sole arbiter.

TrueBlue’s comment on my blog made a good argument.

He quote” But the Pinoys again are fooled by Gluerilla! Probably, bi nayaran ni Ate Glue si Chippy Chow to divert attention and for a change, her regime is not the constant topic.”

    Hehehe!
It make sense because Malacanang is silent on this Chip Tsao’s below the belt insulting piece of crap to Filipinos.

  30. Gov. Abusakar Tan has already declared State of Emergency in his Province. Is this a prelude to Malacanang’s declaring the same soon?

  31. Noel, you may add this, my comment, as one more attack on your opinions — you broke your solemn promise not to revisit this blog. If it is any comfort to you, you were not the first to undergo the initiation rites in Ellenville, and I’m sure you won’t be the last.
When that someone “even called Pilipino unity as my pipe dream” he was expressing his personal opinion and he has as much right to do so as you do. He might even have history to back his opinion: those savages that attacked Magellan united only briefly in protecting their villages from interloping aliens, and since that time our history books (the old but accurate ones) are replete with dissension and strife up to the time of Aguinaldo-Bonifacio enmity and the self-confessed admission of Ate Glue in 2001 that her leadership is divisive.
As a former OFW (a generic term you label Pilipinos abroad) I can assure you that the Pinoy disunity and bickering is alive; Pilipino unity is still a myth. But there is a slim chance that do-gooders like you can make a difference. Caution: the road to hell is filled with good intentions, and perhaps with potholes typical of our DPWH-maintained roads.

  32. Noel Noel

To Cocoy and Neonate. Both of you are fools and cowards. Obviously, I struck a raw nerve here. You are afraid to come out and protest for fear of martial law. You just hide behind the anonymity of a blog. The Pilipinos, whether here or abroad, do not need defeatists like you. Next time, you’ll blame us who protested against Martial Law and survived for the your failures as individuals to exercise your right to freedom of speech and redress your grievances against the government.

I’m sure Bitchevil and the majority of the bloggers here do not share your views. Now Cocoy, you can kiss everybody’s ass.

  33. I have not heard yet of any Filipino in HK protesting against this insult by a very prejudiced Chinese journalist. “Mahirap na, baka matanggal pa sa trabaho,” says one maid I have talked to. Yuck!

That’s personal interest for you that I abhor about a lot many Filipinos, who would rather embarrass their country just for the 3 meals that they give as reason for why they allow themselves to be exploited worldwide.

I blame most of all the female presidents of the Philippines for what the Filipinos have gained as their present image that a Filipino in the Bay Area has described, “mga puta at katulong ng mundo.”

I blame Cory Aquino for the mass deployment of the putas to Japan when she was president, and Gloria Bugaw who takes pride in exporting not just putas but also super atsays overseas.

It’s pathetic to hear of Filipinos going to college just to be mere super atsays and atsoys overseas. I’ve actually long been into the movement to change this kind of image of Filipinos overseas.

  34. Noel, please respect others’ opinions. I do share Cocoy’s views but sometimes also disagree. We’re here to learn from one another.

Ever wonder why that writer or the Chinese are not afraid to say those things to us Filipinos? Why don’t they do the same to Koreans, Japanese, Americans, Russians? Because we allow it. Because we have nothing to defend. We can’t totally blame Tsao for being patriotic and defend his country’s rights on Spratleys. On the other hand, how many of our government officials defend the Spratleys? The Arroyo government even came up with a border map risking RP’s ownership. Atty. Harry Roque just filed a petition with the Supreme Court arguing that the move made by this evil government was unconstitutional.

  35. felemun felemun

actually its not only tsao who made a nasty comment about the maids (or dh or domestic helpers) even one columnist (forgot the social climbers name) she also made some comments that she should have killed herself (or to that effect) rather than be in a plane with the dh

  36. dandaw dandaw

There is nothing wrong if a person is a maid or servant as long as it is an honest living. Much more if a maid is earning $3,400.00/month. Some Pinoys has that pride of Superiority because they have money and a has-been politician. The rich does not mingle with the poor. Really,
    who cares.

  37. Noel,
I am not insulted by your comment, try to dig deeper more harder. I am curious and trying to weed out the real point of your being too personal with your comment. So far, I gather that you aren’t a smart person I encountered into some argument with bloggers here.

Just come out and say what you mean and think. Then, things can be discussed clearly without cryptic sentences and confusion.

I am just trying to get to the meat of your thought process in all of this. Specifics help but generalizations normally just muddy the water and make it rather impossible to navigate at times. For people like you,I can thank the conservative pro-slavery pro-segregationists of our not so far away past, for our current Country of impoverished urban populous. To deny this responsibility and place it elsewhere is a huge hypocritical stance.

If you want to figure out the problems with our country and our government, you can’t just look at half of the problem. And, I say that because, at the heart of it, half of the people in our country is left-leaning and half is right-leaning. It isn’t like if you get rid of the “cancer that is the revolutionary way” that all Filipinos will suddenly become all wonderful and fuzzy and happy. It is yet another generalization that doesn’t fit and doesn’t work.

  38. perl perl

Chip Tsao is now paying for what he did. If you search “Chip Tsao” string in Google or Yahoo, they are all pointing to all blogs that condemn him. Even if he made public apology, the bad remarks on his name will never be erased.

Bureau of Immigration blacklisted him to enter the Philippines, but this is not enough… he should be blacklisted also for employing Filipino servant.

The march on the streets of HK by Filipino Community should be pushed through.

This will serve as a warning to the foreign media that never insult the Filipino again.

  39. Noel,
You called me and Neonate a coward and fools?

Wow, am I ever chastened!! I can’t remember when I’ve been so shut down.

As far as us “scummy rhetoric spewing fools,” please take the time to demonstrate how you differ? Because you’ve read some philosophers?

I find it amusing how you position yourself with great philosophers in history and then demean those with which you disagree. Do you honestly think that my friend Neonate would publicly decry those who disagree as fools?

It’s the fool who cloaks himself in the clothes of great men and therein presumes to judge others.

The great thinkers of history have oft added layers of understanding, and sometimes removed them, to the compendium of knowledge. It is an unfinished work.

I doubt any of us can absorb it all; I know I can not. The best I can hope for is to bathe myself in their words and thoughts and allow myself to make my own conclusions.

There is one thing I have come to realize; the more I learn, the less I know. You could do worse.Cheeers!

Cocoy, if you think that telling me to kiss my ass is not an insult, then you’ll go down the sewer quicker than you can say ass. You started the vulgarity and the insult.

My advocacy of Pilipino unity is not a generalization or a philosophical point of view. Unity among Pilipinos is a very specific term. And I am sure unity among Pilipinos will be achieved in spite of your belief to the contrary. It does not also fall within the purview of philisophy nor an ideology. Thinking of a united Pilipinos possessing political and economic power must be a state of mind. My corollary advocacy for the exercise of the freedom of speech and a person’s right to express dissent against their government are inherent and God given rights. Everyone must protect and exercise these rights. Those who don’t will be doomed. The Pilipinos are very lucky to have courageous journalists like Ellen Tordesillas who continues to expose anomalies and challenge even the military for their excesses. Without these courageous journalists, no one can post any opinion here. Many of you did not live under Marcos’ Martial Law. Those who died protesting and
expresssing their dissent are heroes. We who survived feel guilty we are still alive.

  42. Noel,

why don’t you read twice or many times my post so that you will understand what you are reading.I did not tell you to kiss your ass and I did not insult you.The problem with you is that you’re so hyper and react so quickly.

Here it is and tell me where did you find that phrase ME, telling you to kiss your ass.

If you do that now,the illegal tenant in Malacanang might as well kiss your ass. She’s looking for an opportunity to declare Martial Law.

  43. Do you need ESL (English Second Language) for that?

  44. If you need a translator,Emiliano is not around at this momment. He is preparing “Burritos”.

  45. Noel Noel

Cocoy, I do not expect anyone to kiss my ass for believing Pilipinos should protest. You are vulgar, however you say it. You, “more harder”, need to study English grammar. Your posts are riddled with mistakes. Go to several classes in English as a Second Language. I don’t need to go as you say because I speak and write English better than you.

You don’t have the brain power to debate with me. Go ahead, rant and rave. I won’t waste my time responding to you anymore.

MANILA, Philippines – One round. Just one round.

Parañaque Rep. Roilo Golez on Wednesday dared HK Magazine columnist Chip Tsao to one round in the boxing ring despite the latter’s apology for a commentary that depicted the Philippines as a “nation of servants” unworthy of claiming the Spratlys from China.

  47. Sure there is nothing wrong with being maids, but that’s a job for those who cannot go to college and earn their keep. If I were a parent in the Philippines struggling to support my daughter to college, I won’t put into her head that she will be good only as a maid overseas.

Susmaryosep!

I’m sorry if you’re no good in reading comprehension.I’m sorry too that I’m stuffing you with two mouthfuls of my pie before you can swallow the first spoon. But i just feel bored and had an idea for a new piece of pie.

Anyhow, thinking of how you answer my questions unlocked some sorta mechanism in your mind, causing the nuts and bolts to start cracking like they’re supposed to in a normal persons mind. and whoa. I began thinking. Thinking and thinking and thinking. it was like pandora’s box had sprung open in your head — you ever heard of pandora’s box? Sure you have. You opened it and all the afflictions of the world came flying out and flying around and got inhaled by people causing them to think about you.Only that they thought of more dastardly schemes and evil stuff. Not to mention dirty stuff.Anyway. That was like my mind. floods of thoughts. yes.

Well, we can talk after you get your certificate from your ESL class.Bye for now because you are a waste of time.

    actually “bagong alipin”
an ofw is only called “bagong bayani” if he is in the bank holding hard earned dollars to be remitted to the Phil. and to his family, after he has remitted he will be called “bagong alipin”
    now you will ask why???
the stupid embassy does nothing to the misled, raped, wrongly convicted of crimes abroad filipinos. If an ofw documented or not is convicted or worst killed, what benefits does the family at home gets, a little sum from OWWA (Opisina ng Walang Wenta at Aang-anga) but before the family can get the benefits they have to push and get their feet sore.
an undocumented pinoys remits his dollars its good for the economy but if his luck run out what would he get… nothing because he is undocumented (nice philosophy)

the government is proud to relay the good news that thousand jobs abroad working in the middle east awaits filipinos

Totoo ba yan? Hahah! Agree, agree, very agree ako diyan… Best way to solve a dispute — one on one para walang guerra!

  54. Noel’s comments are spot on.

Difficult to achieve unity — every nation dreams of it.

In contemporary history, we saw it happened; in terms of national unity per se, some succeeded but had to go through violent upheavals, Germany (under Hitler), Yugoslavia (under Tito), Libya (Ghadaffi), China (under Mao), N Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh), etc., they had the guidance of a strongman at the helm.

But I agree with him when he says “Thinking of a united Pilipinos possessing political and economic power must be a state of mind.” It would be a hard climb.

Filipinos are island people and by definition, are insular minded, akin to tribal minded, hence unity will be a hard and steep climb. That said, the art of the possible is also a state of mind so the eternal optimmist in me says, why not?

  55. Re: “the government is proud to relay the good news that thousand jobs abroad working in the middle east awaits filipinos… now whats the fuzz about having us called nation of servants”

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t think there should be a fuzz because as you rightly said, it’s govt policy to sell and trafic cheap Filipino labour abroad but you know, it’s good to flex your keyboard muscles once in a while; not a good thing to be content being flogged and caned all the time — even nice, submissive, docile dogs bite back when too much is too much. (wink, wink)

  56. Ad hominem arguments bounce off my line of reasoning like water off a duck’s back. Ergo, if someone enters the room and mounts the soapbox preaching unity, but is displeased by skepticism or indifference of the audience to the practicality of the idea and promptly starts quarreling with dissenters, I am amused. Admittedly, it is hard to comprehend how dissent constitutes foolhardiness or cowardice.

  57. Neonate,

“Admittedly, it is hard to comprehend how dissent constitutes foolhardiness or cowardice.”

    Hahah! I agree…

  58. “kundi ang mga tulad ni Luisa at ang mga ninanakawang mamayang Pilipino na nasa “Nation of Servant” ang dapat magmura kay Arroyo.”

C’mon! You can’t expect them to do that… Those ladies are hard at work, cleaning Chinese toilets or sitting on the laps of gentle Japanese clients.

That’s why we are doing it for them. Think about it.

  59. Anyway, think of it this way: two for the price of one, eg., one mura for both Gloria and Tsao.

    That’s doable.

  60. Valdemar Valdemar

My total respect for Noel being the first to admit of the cardinal error of the Pilipino unity that looted Malacanan and our better life with Marcos and changed it with what we have now. I only wonder if he is one of the Marcos wealth claimants for he surely deserves it. But heroes never ask for emoluments.

  61. norpil norpil

Unity? On what. we cannot even unite in kicking chip tsao, so how can we unite in kicking the small one with her fat husband.

  62. Hahahahah!

“so how can we unite in kicking the small one with her fat husband.”

  63. I wonder why Noel used “P” instead of “F” for Filipino. He always wrote Pilipino. Is he a foreigner and non-Filipino? Foreigners usually say Pilipino based on the word P-hilippines. Just my observation. No big deal.

  64. Re: “angnang mga katwiran! Puro pera, puro pera na lang ba?”

Ah, Yuko… money is what makes the world go round. Of course, money is quintessential to everything material.

Seriously now, how can you even begin to ask that question? Would you rather these poor folks committed suicide as is the common trend in Japan because of hopelessness due to poverty?

Besides, I don’t for one moment believe, not one moment, that Filipino parents who are struggling to send their kiddies to school are indoctrinating their children to become servants at the end of their studies. I mean, doesn’t make sense.

That they end up with their college degree as servants is due more to our own collective national failure to find the right solutions to major problems (led by and due mainly to our incapable good for nothing natl leaders) but surely, it’s not because parents indoctrinated children to have domestic servitude for ambition. Even you cannot believe that gung-hoistic idea.

  65. As of this writing, there’s a huge protest going on in London against the G-20 meeting. Protesters broke the bank’s windows. Maybe this is the kind of protest Noel has in mind which we seldom would find in the Philippines. There’s no unity even when it comes to protest and strike. That, I partly agree.

  66. BE,

    “Protesters broke the bank’s windows.”

Great! I’m all for breaking banks’ windows. Protesters should also break the cars of these bankers.

Seriously, next to Gloria Macapagal and her good for nothing government, Western bankers and EU tax people are the two other groups of people I’d like to see hanged for incompetence and greediness!

  67. In the Philippines, I hope the protesters break the Evil Bitch’s ugly face!

  68. Yuko,

Nakiliti ako sa sinabi mo “I was browsing through a catalog of IKEA, the Swedish furniture franchisee.”

Can’t stand those stupid Ikea catalogs; they go straight into the bin when they are chucked in my mailbox — matter of fact, I’ve now put a “Verbotten” sticker on my mailbox to ward off people distributing any and all advert printed material, particularly from Ikea and Habitat.

  69. This is a gem:

“There is one thing I have come to realize; the more I learn, the less I know.” — Cocoy

And I agree, because that’s me too. The more I learn, the less I know, and now I’m absolutely horribly confused so I decided to stop learning. Hihihih!

  70. The Bible also says that “Always keep learning but never come to the knowledge of truth”.

  71. DevilsAdvocate DevilsAdvocate

the article was a very badly written. im there. the article was supposed to be a satire. im there. we as filipino people are very proud. im there. but like what Mr. Alan Robles said in our e-group…why aren’t we huffin’ and puffin’ about the murder of Esperat the way we huff and puff about what other people write/say about filipinos? the article was a very bad joke and very tasteless. but c’mon everyone. we can’t point a finger at other people/countries about discrimination without 3 of the fingers pointing back at us. don’t we do the same thing? doesn’t our comedians make fun of other nationalities? other people’s skin color? other races’ facial features?

im a very proud filipino. but i do wonder why us as a country get mad about satires on the expense of the filipinos, because we filipinos do the same! but when it’s us being made fun of…oh no, we can’t have that! now that everybody has vented and said their two cents about the article….CAN WE NOW FOCUS OUR ANGER AT THE THINGS GOING ON IN OUR COUNTRY THAT REALLY NEEDS TO BE GIVEN ATTENTION?

WE ARE SO SENSITIVE ABOUT WHAT OTHER COUNTRY SAYS IN JEST (HOWEVER BAD IT MAY BE) ABOUT US THAT IT’S ALL OVER THE BLOGOSPHERE. BUT YET AGAIN, MOST FILIPINO BLOGGERS FAIL TO WRITE ABOUT ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCES/MURDERS OF OUR KABABAYANS.

c’mon people, let’s focus our anger and attention at more important issues. like i said, our tv shows discriminate about other races too. let us not be hypocrites.

I think Mr. Alan Robles put it in real perspective as far as the sentiment(s) I am trying to convey. He said this following statement and asked in our e-group:

“Marlene Esperat was shot in the face, killed in front of her two kids in her own home, because she was trying to expose a corrupt official. But her murder didn’t raise a peep in the blogs, which are currently on fire (with all sorts of slimy, violent and ugly invective) over a designer who made a shopkeeper in the duty-free shop kneel in front of him. Is it because we Filipinos are hurt quickest in our pride? or we pick “safe” issues to get angry about?”

    AND ALSO…

“BTW if you’re going to declare anybody persona non grata, why not the ZTE officials who facilitated the bribes for the broadband network? Why not Master Sergeant Ron Berg, the US soldier who threatened to shoot Filipinos in a hospital in Sulu (their own country)?”

  72. Re: “Mr. Alan Robles said in our e-group…why aren’t we huffin’ and puffin’ about the murder of Esperat the way we huff and puff about what other people write/say about filipinos?”

Pardon me but who was Esperat?

If you asked me, I would be perfectly honest. I thought the article was vulgar, crass and obstinately politically incorrect, in other words, I detected in it racial discrimination as in racist.

Now, I’ll be very frank with you, even if I think Tsao might be racist, I will be hard put to condemn him for being racist but will be very vicious against him for his crass material.

And if you ask me why I wouldn’t condemn Tsao for being racist, the answer is simple, I too could be diabolically racist and paradoxically enough, racists just don’t like other racists.

  73. I am amused. Admittedly, it is hard to comprehend how dissent constitutes foolhardiness or cowardice.–Neonate
    ************************************************
Hahaha! Me too,I find it hard to know what to do in these case. If we’re too overbearing, we run the risk of sounding like preachy, holier-than-thou bleeding juice from stones. If we don’t say anything, we’re implicitly condoning these acts of disregard. Even if we try the gentle, “You know… ” approach, it still manages to come out with a condescending air. Using pop-psychology terms here, I have to say I prefer the carrot over the stick — positive encouragement over negative reinforcement — because there’s less chance people will compost if they feel it’s a chore, and a greater chance they’ll do it if it’s seen as a way to minimize garbage and fertilize the garden.

Nonetheless, there are some folks out there who just seem like a lost cause. When I was buying some coffee recently at Costco, for instance, a guy saw me searching along the shelves and said,

    “They’re all the same.”

So I replied, “Well, yeah, they all taste similar, but I’m looking for the Fair-Trade brand.”

    And what does he say?

“Ugh, please, you don’t actually believe in that, do you?”

At this point, I could have gotten into a lengthy debate about the merits of Fair-Trade coffee, however it was obvious this would’ve required at least two hours of dialogue, preferably accompanied by secondary reading material and signed testimonials from Venezuelan coffee growers. It just wasn’t worth it.

““BTW if you’re going to declare anybody persona non grata, why not the ZTE officials who facilitated the bribes for the broadband network? Why not Master Sergeant Ron Berg, the US soldier who threatened to shoot Filipinos in a hospital in Sulu (their own country)?””

Hey, I’m a Filipino (and a blogger) but don’t look at me!

My blog is replete with numerous posts containing vitriolics about those two particular incidents precisely calling for these low life creatures, ZTE officials and that American pompous little ass for a soldier to be hanged, drawn and quartered.

By the way, please say hello to Alan for me!

  75. “im a very proud filipino.” (Yeah, I could see that…)

Very? Why the need to say “very” proud? Why not just “I’m a proud Filipino?” or just “I’m a Filipino”?

After all, it would be quite unuusual to say, “I’m a bashful Filipino” or “I’m a very bashful Filipino!” Just a thought….

  76. “I’m a proud Filipino” is different from “I’m proud to be a Filipino”.

  77. Right on BE!

  78. And Gloria Arroyo says “I’m a proud Bitch and proud to be an Evil”.

  79. Noel Noel

To DevilsAdvocate. I agree with you. You hit the nail right on the head. And for speaking the truth, you were also attacked. Well, for a very few here, the truth hurts. Those very few just want everyone to agree with them.

You gave me a great deal of encouragement. You understand the real issues that we Pilipinos should be fighting for.

And to AdeBrux. You gave me a ray of hope in achieving Pilipino unity when you agreed and understood what I meant when I said, thinking of a united Pilipinos possessing political and economic power must be a state of mind. It must become a part of our thinking and decision making process. I am convinced that unity among Pilipinos can be achieved, perhaps not in my lifetime, but I hope very soon after. If we don’t achieve unity, Pilipinos will remain oppressed.

  80. Be, Pilipino is the Tagalog version of ‘Filipino’ that misguided nationalists peddle (the P being the preferred pronunciation of Tagalogs and those having difficulty in enunciating the F diphthong). This arcane group also monger other Tagalized words and phrases to replace foreign words — salung-puwet instead of silya (chair).

  81. AdB and Be insist on being recalcitrant, spelling Filipino with an F rather than the patriotic P.

  82. Chip Tsao cries fowl and turns chicken, but the hullabaloo has created havoc to Pinoy dignity. He could have mitigated the pain by retaining some criticism on the official creation of Ate Glue’s supermaid training.

  83. Thanks Professor Neonate. Chip Tsao finally apologized. Why did it take him long to do that? He must be reading this blog.

  84. It was reported that Chip Tsao personally went to Philippine Consulate in Hongkong to apologize. He even cried. True or not…well…

  85. Someone is blowing thick smoke on his “Pipe Dreams” to Unite Filipinos.Tell you what, buddy! why don’t you visit Carson,California. The Filipinos living in these area are running each other for councilor and mayor. They are not united, some Filipinos are backing the other none Filipino candidates.

You can blow your trumpet and celebrate your patriotism’s supposed new unity, calling it the return to the spirit of the “greatest generation”after the return of Mc Arthur, These people don’t really care how or why a unity has been brought about; they’re just glad it’s here. The problem is that our country’s unity runs shallow.Filipinos agree that the flag is great with the singing of “Lupang Hinirang” and that patriotic slogans are swell, but when one gets into details, an astounding lack of unity is quite evident.

Pretending to be united for the sake of argument is like pretending to agree with someone just to avoid getting into an argument — it won’t work for long.

As individuals,Kapangpangan,Ilocano,Bisayans,Zambalenio, Boholano and others hold just about every conceivable political point-of-view, and a doctrine of “Sa Pula,Sa Puti” cannot conceal that diversity for long. Our differences of opinion are not mere accessories to our lives, but reflective of fundamental values that affect the ways in which we live. The business of our country (Pearl of the Orient) is the business of debate, and as long as that debate is restrained, our nation will languish in its current state of perplexed and futile anger.A company of three is not a unity,That slogan United we Stand. This evil government has just announced 100,000 jobs available in Qatar. It proudly says OFWs can now work again in Lebanon. Canada needs thousands of RP skilled workers. What we hear and read everyday is government’s report and announcement of jobs available in other countries. When can we hear from them that there are thousands of jobs available in the Philippines?

To AdeBrux – if you read my post, i said “most” filipino bloggers. i did not say all. and surely if you know about the ZTE scams etc. etc., you would know about the fertilizer scam which was the reason why Esperat was gunned down right inside her home in front of her kids while having dinner or about to have dinner.

and i digress….what i was meaning to say is im very proud to be a filipino. and what’s wrong with being “very proud” of your country, your heritage and you culture? “very proud” because regardless of what the whole world think about us as people, we still say “I AM A PILIPINO!” kse marami sa ating mga kababayan ang hindi marunong tumingin sa pinanggalingan nila….nakatungtong lang sa ibang bansa.

To Noel – glad i can help put things in perspective to some people with an open mind.

  92. Devilsadvocate,

Proud to be Filipino? Nothing wrong at all, rest assured, absolutely nothing.

In fact, it’s a given that any self-respecting citizen of the august and proud Republic of the Philippines should be and must be proud to be Filipino.

So, don’t get me wrong… I was honestly curious and wanted to know if what you meant in fact was that you were proud to be a Filipino as opposed to what you wrote, and I quote:

    “im a very proud filipino.”

    Thanks for elucidating.

  93. To Noel,

Don’t despair — I’m confident there’s many more of our fellowmen who aspire for unity and are prepared to do what is necessary to achieve this dream.

Indeed, as you say, perhaps not during your (or my lifteme)… but if we look back in history, noble dreams do happen — not all Filipinos thought at the time that the Philippine Revolution would succeed in sowing the seeds of desire for Philippine independence yet Bonifacio did it.

As you rightly say, “If we don’t achieve unity, Pilipinos will remain oppressed.”

  94. Unity is not given…it is earned.

It’s not a crime to dream that one day, the Filipinos will unite. It’ not a crime to be delusional either. I’ve been
on this argument before and I’ve never received a feedback to my counter points which is:

    – the Tagalogs think they’re better than everyone else

    – the Bicolanos think they’re better than the Tagalogs

    – the Ilocanos think they’re better than the over 100 Indigenous people of the Islands

    – the Bisayans think they’re better than the Muslims

    – the Igorots think they’re better than the other Igorots and some are now claiming to be no longer Igorots (which I could care freaking less!)

    – the little brothers, Aetas, have no clue of their status quo, the government could care less for their welfare and they’re not asking for bailout or anything. Reckon they’re just as happy with their lives

Filipino business people abroad have their restaurants/sarisari store named like these:

    – Kapampangan Resto

    – Bicolano Store or Bisayan Deli

    – Cebu (Zeboo) Coffe Shop and Icecream

    – Little Tondo/Little Manila/Little Dagupan Store

    – Luzon Resto

You contrast these with other Asians: Vietnamese Resto or Thai Resto or Indian Cuisine. The point here is, Filipinos tend to cater to their own ethnic groups, and it’s no wonder their businesses are a failure.

We are a multi-ethnic groups with over 90 dialects and different customs and traditions. Internal prejudices, biases, and even racial discord are thriving as we speak and for some of you to think, ONE DAY WE WILL BE UNITED, I say to you GoodLuck and as Cory always say: We’ll pray na lang.

  97. TruBlue TruBlue

Veronica Guerin was also an Irish Journalists killed in broad daylight in Ireland years ago for her expose’ on Irish Syndicate’s drug proliferation. The only difference with Ms Esperat, was that, justice was served on Veronica’s case (maybe it’s Victoria).

  98. Trueblue, says Filipinos will unite is delusional. So very true, trueblue. But must you be so bloody accurate?

  99. TrueBlue, why do you think there’s no Filipino Town abroad unlike Chinatown, Korean Town, Japan Town?

  100. Noel Noel

Being divided into ethnic groups, provinces and regions with its own dialects must not prevent the Pilipinos from becoming a united country playing a major role in the world. The United States and Russia are multi-ethnic and multi-cultural countries. They are united and powerful countries. China, India and Pakistan are also multi-ethnic and multi-cultural countries. They are also united countries that are emerging as powers to be reckoned with.

I believe the main reason why we are not united as a people was because of the divide and rule strategy of colonizers. Spain framed us (like framing innocent persons for crimes they did not commit) as a race of indolent indios who needed to be civilized through the cross, but never united as a people. And so, they ruled us with an iron fist and
divided the Pilipinos as Tagalogs, Kapangpangans, Pangasinenses, Ilokanos, Visayans, Bikolanos, etc. Many Pilipinos still think in those frames. I admire and respect Pilipinos who say I am a Pilipino first and foremost, before saying I’m a Tagalog or a Bisaya. The United States continued the colonialist policies of Spain. Their justification for annexing the Philippines as a colony was to pacify and educate the Pilipino savages who swung from tree to tree. The American GI’S who sang
“Monkeys have no tails in Zamboanga” was not only insulting
the Pilipinos. They were also manifesting their colonial
policy. Although English became the language used in government, trade and industry, academia and even in religion, it is never our language. As Pilipinos, we have our own mores and values that make us think differently and distinct from other nationalities. So, English did not become a vehicle to unify us. I became acutely aware that I’m thinking like a Pilipino when my Caucasian friends and associates told me to think like an American. That was the best way for them to understand me. In fact, some suggested
that I improve my accent by attending an accent improvement class costing $1,000.00. I told them, I didn’t need to improve my accent and spend that kind of money. I already have my Pilipino accent that I’m proud of.

President Manuel L. Quezon attempted to unify the Pilipinos with a national language, Tagalog. Many resisted and it is never effective in uniting us.

In high school, I raved about Andres Bonifacio, Jose Rizal and other Pilipino heroes. I challenged my history teacher who believed we owe Ferdinand Magellan for discovering the Philippines. I told him Magellan did not discover the
Philippines. The Philippines already existed before and after he came. We must recognized and admire Lapu Lapu who was the first Pilipino to fight against colonialization by
circumscizing and beheading Magellan. He sent me to the principal’s office for being impertinent. The principal sent me to play basketball after I told him what I said to my teacher.

I’ve been exposed to many different nationalities and cultures. Americans, Russians, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Germans, English, Norwegians, Italians, Spanish, French, Ukrainians, Vietnamese, Polish, Estonians, Iranians, Arabians, and Algerians. I met them in my travels, academia, business and in my neighborhood. They all have one trait in common which I respect and admire. They have unity. Sure, each one fight among themselves. But when it comes to defending their own kind against an outsider, they are cohesive and united. I’ll be very happy to see this kind of behavior in all the Pilipinos.

For the Pilipinos to be united, we have to regard Pilipino unity as a state of mind. We have to internalize it as a part of us which guides our thinking, decision making and behavior.

  101. The Filipino people may seem to be standing and still breathing air in our country, but as it turns out, no one’s very clear what we’re all supposed to be united for? United for what,ha Noel? Some would say that we’re united in sympathy for all the people under the regime of Gloria Arroyo, although sympathy alone does not explain a pattern of violent retaliation. Others would say that we’re united in our love of freedom and democracy, although a fair number have argued that we need to sacrifice our civil liberties in order to defend freedom. Still others would say that we’re united in a war against a terrorist enemy,Abu Sayaff,NPA and other insurgents, although no one’s really sure who that enemy really is and what the specific objectives are supposed to be (we’re actually pretty divided when it comes to that question).

United we stand, divided we fall. This old adage about the advantages of being united is almost self-evident. And yet it requires some elaboration when applied to a democratic society, where uniformity of opinion is not the general rule, and is not even to be desired. The life-blood of a democracy are differences of opinion between different elements of the society that are debated and resolved in democratic elections.

  102. We shall all be united if we fly on United Airline.

  103. Noel Noel

My brother was ordered to train three (3) recent college graduates who were all appointed afterwards to be his boss.
He sued the company after the third time. During the first court hearing, the judge asked my brother why he was screaming discrimination in his court when he should have started screaming discrimination while still an employee of the company. The message was clear, you should have stood up for your rights from the very beginning and come to me only as a last resort. We’ll listen to you and respect you when you know how to fight and protect your own interest. It
took my brother six (6) years to win his case. We learned our lesson. When my sister also suffered employment discrimination, we wrote non-threatening letters explaining her side of any issue and made it as a part of her personnel records. She did not have to sue to get justice. The discrimination stopped.

I helped some Pilipinos who are working here to write similar letters when they suffered employment discrimination.

I thought I’d share this with you as a reminder that employment discrimination still exists in the United States, and what can be done about it.

  104. Noel,
That’s a tale tell story about the discrimination lawsuit of your brother.Half myth half truth.

Proving discrimination in the workplace is more or less the same whether the discrimination is on the basis of age, race, sex, national origin, or anything else that is illegal.

Discrimination in the workplace cases are proven very difficult.
Disability discrimination in the workplace, where other factors, such as “reasonable accommodation” are at issue. A “reasonable accommodation” is when the employer modifies the job duties, provides some extra help, or takes some other measure to ensure that the person can still be able to do the job, recent court decisions have made proving discrimination in the workplace more complicated.

An adverse employment action is anything the employer does which affects the employee’s job and isn’t positive. This can be just about anything relating to someone’s job: their position, pay, title, hours, vacations, most everything is a term or condition of employment. Whether or not a person is hired is also considered a term or condition of employment.

Take the case of a black man, employer fires him and the black man files discrimination lawsuit.

The employer might state that the employee was not fired because he was black, but because the employer was actually down-sizing. That is a perfectly legal reason to fire someone. Just because the person is black does not mean that you can never fire him; it just means that you can’t fire him because he’s black.

Here, the employer says it wasn’t because he was black but because the company was down-sizing.

In the case of Reeves v. Sanderson Plumbing Products, Inc. alleviated the plaintiff’s burden in proving employment discrimination. Before this case, once the employee proved that the employer discriminated against the employee, the employer could rebut this by showing a legitimate non-discriminatory reason for the adverse employment action. Then, the employee had the additional burden of proving that this was pretext by convincing the court that the true reason was discriminatory.

Now, the court holds that if the plaintiff can prove that the employer’s offered reason was pretext, this can be sufficient to proving the plaintiffs case, and the court can hold the employer liable. Of course, this is not to say that a showing of pretext by the plaintiff will always be adequate to sustain a jury’s finding of liability. There will probably be instances where, although the plaintiff has established a prima facie case and set forth sufficient evidence to reject the defendant’s explanation, no rational fact finder could conclude that the action was discriminatory.

  105. It is very hard to convince the jury on a discrimination lawsuit.I served on the jury so many times.I know.

  106. To prosper your discrimination lawsuit in court, you need to bring a battalion of co-workers to collaborated your statements.I don’t think your co-workers will go against there employers who provided them bread and butter.

You need to go to Deposition. The employer’s attorney will depose you under oath.Your statement is recorded by court appointed stenographer.

  107. Noel Noel

I have a standing invitation from my friends to visit the Philippines. I’m stoked. My schedule this summer permits me to make the trip there. I can’t decide though where to stay. In Baguio, in Boracay or in Dasma.

It would be nice to meet some of you there.

  108. I’m not a lawyer.I only work at my brother’s law office for so long helping him in doing research for his case.

  109. Noel, Baguio is a better place because of its colder climate. The only problem is there are so many Ilocanos in Baguio…and of course Koreans.

  110. Noel Noel

To Bitchevil. Thank you for your input. I have no problem nor quarrel with the Ilokanos and for that matter with Pampanguenos, Bikolanos, Visayans, Pangasinenses or any ethnic groups in the Philippines. We are all Pilipinos who must be united protecting and defending the Pilipinos against those who oppress and steal from the Pilipinos.
Foreigners can justify to themselves that their actions against Pilipino interest are in the foreigners’ best interest. Some Pilipinos who oppress and steal from Pilipinos can not justify it to themselves or to any others for any reason. As you probably noticed, I mention Pilipinos repeatedly in my sentences. It is for emphasis.

The divisiveness among Pilipinos based on a group’s dialect or province reminded me of my remarks to a groups of
Tagalogs and Pampanguenos. As everyone knows, the provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga are separated by a river.
Chicken, goats, carabaos from each province cross the river and mate. I asked them to follow the lead of their domesticated animals, make love instead of partisan fighting and constant conflicts. They reacted with much laughter. I would have been happier if they got the message.

  111. I was only kidding, Noel. Of course there are many Ilocanos in Baguio because people there are. It’s like saying there are many Kapampangan in Pampanga. He, he, he…

  112. alexis alexis

  113. You bet, Anna, I don’t believe in that old shit that money makes the world go round! I prefer the Japanese way out to any crisis—suicide—as a matter of fact. It’s no different from what the Savior said in fact about cutting one’s arm if it can spell doom!

  114. Adb: …or sitting on the laps of gentle Japanese clients….

    ******

On the contrary, Anna, a lot of these women do not sit on the laps of “gentle Japanese clients.” It is common knowledge over here that majority of those who frequent bars and clubs are no gentlemen. They are mostly yakuzas and chimpiras!
