Sixteen members of the House of Representatives and their spouses, children, and staff members, are joining President Arroyo’s official trips this month to Japan and Brazil, both countries with confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1).
Brazil has 52 confirmed cases while Japan has 549 as of June 12, according to the World Health Organization.
Arroyo is leaving tomorrow for the Japan visit which will last up to June 20. Her Brazil trip is from June 21 to 25.
The House secretary general, Marilyn Yap, sent a one-page endorsement letter dated June 11 to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo for travel authority and tax exemption of several lawmakers.
They are Amado Bagatsing (Manila), Victoria Reyes (Batangas), Rizalina Seachon-Lanete (Masbate), Mary Ann Susano (Quezon City), Herminia Roman (Bataan), Cecilia Seares-Luna (Abra), Francisco Matugas (Surigao del Norte), Joseph Gilbert Violago (Nueva Ecija);
Yevgeny Cincente Emano (Misamis Oriental), Rommel Amatong (Compostela Valley), Thomas Dumpit Jr. (La Union), Rachel Arenas (Pangasinan), Carol Jayne Lopez (PL-Youth against Corruption and Poverty (Yacap), Robert Raymond Estrella (PL-Abono), Raymond Democrito Mendoza (PL-Trade Union Congress of the Philippines, and Ma. Carissa Coscolluela (PL-Buhay).
A copy of Yap’s letter was submitted to the Sandiganbayan First Division by Matugas as part of his request for the court’s permission for his trip abroad.
Matugas is facing a graft charge over alleged overpricing of pharmaceutical products and other hospital items purchased by the Surigao del Norte provincial government between October 1996 and February 1998 under his administration as governor.
Matugas was accused of conspiring with four medical suppliers and six erstwhile provincial officials to defraud the government by approving the delivery of 5000cc DS water procured at P109 per bottle, which were found to be sold by other suppliers at only P26 per bottle; butterfly needles priced at P68 per unit obtainable from others at P9.95 each; and amoxicillin antibiotics paid for at P73.83 per capsule sold by other firms at P10 each.
Yap said the lawmakers’ companions are traveling “at their own personal expense.”
Matugas is bringing along his daughter, Lourdes Matugas-Ruiz, and Bagatsing, his daughter, Amanda Cristina Bagatsing.
Susano will be accompanied by a Vanessa Rose S. Francisco and Maribeth S. Monserrat. It was not stated in the letter whether Francisco and Monserrat are Susano’s staff members or relatives.
All the other lawmakers are traveling with their spouses.
It should be the host countries they are visiting that should be afraid of them. They should even avoid and having contact with Gloria’s entourage since they carry viruses much worse than the dreaded AH1N1. They are known to carry the deadly disease called CORRUPTION. Yes, it’s very contagious and should be avoided at all cost.
