Army ousts Honduras president in vote dispute

This should send shivers down Gloria Arroyo’s spine.

by Mica Rosenberg Mica Rosenberg

Tegucigalpa (Reuters) – The Honduran army ousted President Manuel Zelaya and threw him out of the country on Sunday in Central America’s first military coup since the Cold War, after he upset the army by trying to win re-election.

U.S. President Barack Obama expressed deep concern after troops came for Zelaya, an ally of leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, at dawn and took him away from his residence.

A military plane flew Zelaya to Costa Rica and CNN’s Spanish-language channel said he had asked for asylum there.

Police fired tear gas at pro-government protesters in the capital, Honduran radio said, and two fighter jets screamed through the sky over the capital.

The impoverished Central American country had been politically stable since the end of military rule in the early 1980s, but Zelaya’s push to change the constitution to allow him another term has split the country’s institutions.

Zelaya fired military chief Gen. Romeo Vasquez last week for refusing to help him run an unofficial referendum on Sunday on extending the four-year term limit on Honduran presidents.

Zelaya told Venezuela-based Telesur television station that he was “kidnapped” by soldiers and called on Hondurans to peacefully resist the coup.

Pro-Zelaya demonstrators gathered at the presidential palace, which was surrounded by soldiers.

“Here, the people are angry,” said protester Boris Vanyas.

The EU condemned the coup and Obama called for calm.

Honduras was a staunch U.S. ally in the 1980s when Washington helped Central American governments fight left-wing guerrillas.

“Any existing tensions and disputes must be resolved peacefully through dialogue free from any outside interference,” Obama said.

It was the first successful military ouster of a president in Central America since the Cold War era.

Honduras’s Supreme Court last week came out against Zelaya and ordered him to reinstate fired military chief Vasquez.

The global economic crisis has curbed growth in Honduras, which lives off coffee and textile exports and remittances from Honduran workers abroad. Recent opinion polls indicate public support for Zelaya has fallen as low as 30 percent.

Honduras, home to around 7 million people, is a major drug trafficking transit point.

It is also a big coffee producer but there was no immediate sign the unrest would affect production.

If Pandak pushes through with her plans to perpetuate her rule, masahol pa dito ang sasapitin niya! I hope we will have a Vasquez in our AFP to abduct the bitch and throw her not just in Costa Rica or another country but in the Pacific Ocean where the real sharks will devour her!

Gising AFP! Do a “Honduran” coup!

  2. I was shocked by the news! Naduling ata ako because I was panning the news earlier today. Ang pagkabasa ko “President was arrested by the military!” Kinabahan ako with excitement! hehehe! I re-read the news. Honduras pala. But I was like.. Huh?!

Hmpt!

Naiinip na ako. Kelan pa kaya tayo mag-Thai, mag-Iran at mag-Honduran? Ang tagal naman!

The lame Vasquezez in the AFP have been silenced by $$$’s & PPP’s. It’s sad but pera pera lang talaga. Will the real “Vasquez” in the AFP show up? Sana…soon…and throw her in the imburnal where her true stench & true color will naturally blend.

  5. Gabriela Gabriela

I was shocked by the news!

  7. Balweg Balweg

Pagnagkataon e sila-sila uli ang partners in crime?

  8. Will the above news scare the Evil Bitch? Nah. She has all the loyal Generals on her palm.

Balweg, if we wait until the elections, too late na yan. Lutong luto na yun. The computer company who will conduct our elections may even be her own company or that of her dogs. The winner will be Teodoro or Noli de Castro or someone she can put strings on so she will be scott free from her cheating ways.

I am pretty sure that there are more generals who can not compromise their principles. The ’78 generals may be paid handsomely by the bitch but if there will be more generals who will defend the people, tapos siya! We need more Vasquez in our AFP.

  10. “It’s sad but pera pera lang talaga.” At kusang loob pa kamong ibinigigay nila.

So ano yon?

(Hango yan sa Oplan God Save The Queen ni Greg Honasan – the ultimate hunyango.)

  14. Si Gloria kinakabahan na? Magdilang anghel ka sana, Ellen. You bet, nagtatapang-tapangan more like iyong dugong aso. Pihado tinawagan na niya iyong kapwa niya dugong aso na si Kenny-ng-buri-mo sa US Embassy for assurance na hindi siya ipapatanggal ni Obama.

Sabi nga as long as she does not prove harmful to the interests of America, di siya ipapatanggal ng mga kano.

I, Queen of the keningburimo republic.

  15. @balweg,

“Queen Elena…shocked of hapiness ha, kasi nga dapat ang diktator at ksp na Pangulo e dapat walang puwang sa paglilingkod-bayan.”

Oo balweg, akala ko yun na! hehehe! kaya go agad ako here thinking na me nangyayari and then binasa ko uli, mali pala basa ko haha!

  16. Balweg, if we wait until the elections, too late na yan. Lutong luto na yun. The computer company who will conduct our elections may even be her own company or that of her dogs.

Until they learn to be really honest, I won’t trust the people running the COMELEC especially with these voting machines. Anything done especially under the supervision, command, etc. of the cheat should be subject to doubt and condemnation.

  18. xman, tama ‘yan. Paghaluin mo ang idealismo at ang botak ora mismo! Resulta? Kawawa tayo mismo.

The recent explosion at the Ombudsman can be a prelude to more bombings and eventual implementation of Oplan August Moon. Let us not underestimate the master of deceit. She has always been one step ahead.
If the opposition can muster a million people and at least 3 Army battalions with Armor support expect the rest of the AFP and PNP to ride with the tide. That will be the end for the Arroyo regime.

  21. boyner boyner

Although the agreements and deals have been finalized and closed, the evil bitch still went to Brazil so that on her return she can tell the Filipinos that she brought back some bacon to deviate attention from the real intent of the trip in that part of the globe. By the way, those are just commitments and promises which can easily be forgotten and broken.
What is ironic is that we have Gloria Arroyo who brags of her doctorate in economics asking financial help from Luiz Igacio Lula da Silva, the president of Brazil who has no college nor high school diploma. A former shoe shine boy who was a founding member of the Workers Party of Brazil.
Like what I have posted before, what the Philippines need for a leader is one who is not necessarily too bright but
one who truly loves his country and people…a patriot.

  23. We have our own history of Filipino soldiers resisting Filipino collaborators of American and Chinese invaders in the 1900s. They are Gen Ricarte, Gen Antonio Luna, Gen Tinio, Gen Lukban and many more. We have counterparts today like Gen Miranda, Gen Lim and many more who have also been resisting the collaborator GMA of this continuing invasion.

Our past have been cut off from us by the American education and propaganda. Let us not continuously be victims of this rape of our history. Let us recover our dignity. Because it is precisely this continuous loss of dignity, this shameful dependence on foreign history (borrowing history of other nations, always pointing out American History as our reference points), it is this shameful dependence on American rescue, that we as a people cease to have passionate impulse to serve our Filipino people. Instead we in general so despise our nation that when an opportunity arises for us to have access to power, we use it for personal and family gain. This has been our cycle since the American invasion. It may have no symptoms for years but like the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, they only appear when the immune system or our defense system has already been deeply corrupted or weakened and continously destroy our own defenses.

While we still have consciousness, let us revive this awareness of our history. Let us disseminate this information to all of us Filipinos. This will be the semen that would regenerate our nation back to wholeness, independent, and ready to chart our own course.

The Honduran scenario sounds familiar to me. Its president Manuel Zelaya whose public support fell to 30% (EV is 70%) wanted to use the military to extend his term ( PMA 78 in place for EV’s perpuity in office). It is a major drug trafficking transit point ( the Phil was just declared by UN as main source of shabu in Asia).

    Ombudsman blast (Inquirer)

“If the intention of those responsible for (Sunday’s) explosion as well as those sending death threats to our investigators is for us to slow down in our investigation, they are mistaken,” Jalandoni said in a statement.

Of course they are mistaken. There is nothing to slow down. Wala naman kayong ginagawa, except sit on cases.

“We will not shrink from our responsibility of prosecuting and investigating cases pending before our office,” he added.

Did you mean shirk? Sa liit ng achievements niyo, there is nothing to shrink. With English like that, how can you score convictions?

“Luckily, this happened before dawn on a Sunday and there were no people around. Maybe they planned it this way so that there would be no casualties,” he added.

Brilliant my dear Watson. Do you think they are running the playbook of Ferdinand Marcos?

Sana, ganito din ang ating Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Ombudsman explosion.

Controlled bombings.

Baka isusunod niya ay mga scenario ng ‘bomb me’, ‘ambush me’, at ‘coup me’.

    Prosecuting heads of state

    by JB D. Baylon

“…Since 1990, at least sixty-seven former heads of state or government have been prosecuted for serious human rights or financial crimes. The majority of these leaders were brought to trial in free and fair judicial processes, and some served time in prison as a result…..

…Indeed, unknown to most of us, the international landscape has changed for heads of state. Did you know that a number of countries have passed laws which allow victims of abusive heads of state to sue them? …..

…It seems that slowly but surely it is becoming harder and harder to find places in the world where one can hide. And that should be just fine for Juan dela Cruz!”

  50. The withdrawal of TIM from the Smartmatic consortium is puzzling. It does not make good business sense. At least on the surface.

Here you have a consortium company not even registered yet but already has a customer and an order of more than P7B worth of products. If I were TIM’s owner, I’d provide any document that Comelec is asking for, nail the contract and make a huge profit in less than a year’s time!

Why did they pull-out? Were they told to? Remember JDV3’s “back-off” conversation with the Pig?

I’m sure that at this very moment, many companies are wooing Smartmatic to replace TIM in the consortium even if its owners in Barbados may have already closed the deal with their new “partners” just a few days ago.

TIM may have wanted to act as dummy for the real interested “investor” but fell out somewhere after the bidding. Or they might have sold their interest to the real masterminds for a fat sum.

That, after all the speculation, is the purpose behind this “secret trip” to Colombia. Let’s give it a few days and if my calculations will carry, a new partner for Smartmatic will be formally announced. Garapalan na ito.

  51. Reyna Elena, Ellen,

Iran, Honduras, at Argentina = I.H.A. de puta ka!

Bakit daw binabatikos ang pagtakbo bilang congresswoman, gayong mayroon namang precedent sa Tate, si John Quincy Adams, at si Andrew Johnson – VP of Honest Abe who assumed the presidency after Lincoln’s assassination.

John Quincy Adams ran for reelection and lost, in 1828. He ran for Congress in 1830, almost two years after he left the White House. So he did not take advantage of his incumbency.

Andrew Johnson left the White House in 1868. He ran for Congress in 1872, and lost. He was reelected to the Senate in 1875.

Once again the Ph. D in Economics is being economical with the truth.

Lies are most insidious when they have the veneer of truth. That is accomplished by installment statements, parceling out only that portion of the truth that is beneficial to the peddler of lies.

TT says “That, after all the speculation, is the purpose behind this “secret trip” to Colombia. Let’s give it a few days and if my calculations will carry, a new partner for Smartmatic will be formally announced. Garapalan na ito.”
neonate – June 20, 2009 6:12 am in Arroyo sets ‘secret’ trip to Colombia
Vera files (truth is our business) says Ate Glue will make a “secret” trip to Colombia. That revelation set my imagination soaring with calculated fantasies — The magic date is 2010, the event possible elections, the Comelec a prime player, Smartmatic the prime electronic player owned by a Colombian firm. Could this be coincidence?, or design?

  62. There’s a new twist in the TIM pullout from the Smartmatic consortium! Or is there?

TIM’s lawyer, as interviewed by Ted Failon on DZMM TV, revealed that there is something seriously wrong with the consortium and that they are doing this “for the good of the country”. The lawyer apparently is preparing his client for a long drawn-out court battle, as it is assumed that several suits will be filed against them.

Although adamant to give details of their course of action, the lawyer rants that while the law mandates a 60-40 ownership sharing in favor of Filipinos, he claims the foreign partners want to have the final say.

I find it flimsy that the reason for the falling out is a simple controlling interest issue very late in the game. When they submitted the bid, it is already determined which party has the final say, that party has decided for the whole consortium their bid price, including how much profit each one will make.

But the lawyer also hinted that they will definitely come out with an announcement explaining the pullout and that this was for the good of the country.

There’s the sexy part. Will they be revealing that Smartmatic is really incapable of supplying the machines? Or that tampering will be employed again in 2010 via hightech rigging? Will they unveil the characters behind this shady deal?

On the other hand, was this a deliberate move by TIM to ensure failure of the election automation? Were they part of the evil design that their role from day one was that of a monkey wrench? Note that all local counterparts were easily disqualified when partnered with a STRONG foreign contender, but those foreigners who were found to be WEAK were easily disqualified regardless of the Pinoy company partner.

It might also be a ploy by Smartmatic to blackmail the Palaka handlers because the Smartmatic machines may have been tweaked to favor the admin candidates.

This is getting to be interesting. I would like the Senate to do its investigation into the matter. It is unthinkable that one company is willing to forfeit its P780M Performance Bond (10% of P7.8B bid amount) using flimsy reasons. Either they have too much money to burn or they just get their money from Juan Dela Cruz anyway. This is big money about to be made.

Mukhang dito mas angkop itong comment na ito, in response to the post of Tongue; so I am reposting it here.

It was Smartmatic that conducted the referendum of Venezuela. The exercise, and the count, was considered clean by the Carter Center

    http://www.cartercenter.org/news/documents/doc1826.html

as well as other international observers.

As explained by Ms. McCoy, the machines tallied the votes on the computer. A printout was, however, provided to the voters, which they could inspect, if reflective of their votes. The printouts were deposited in ballot boxes, like regular manual ballots. The machine results could be audited by counting the printouts (they are machine readable, so there is no manual count). The machine results, presumably, should match the count of the printouts.

The Jimmy Carter center did audits, and found the results accurate, and reflective of the will of the people.

So bakit umatras ang TIM? They wanted control of the machines. The TIM are the Pinoys; sila ang may motive na mandaya. The Venezuelans could care less if a dog (or pig) won the elections. But they, I presume, would want a credible result, dahil yan ang negosyo nila; and they want long term benefits, not the short-term relief of a tongpats. Smartmatic, through Sequoia, is in at least 17 states of the US. May US elections din sa 2010, and again in 2012.

Possibleng may lagay kay Pidal, so they could get the business. So what? As long as the results are clean.

Maaaring diyan nagmula ang away; dahil ang Noypi, gustong ma-control ang bilangan. That is where the business interests diverged. The Smartmatic wanted to showcase another clean elections, so they can continue marketing. The Pinoys, wanted to conduct their kalakalang unggoy (monkey business).

BTW, does anybody remember the much ballyhooed Kalakalan 20 of Cory bright boy Oca Orbos?

  64. snv,
Connecting my two comments with yours, I agree that the best endorsement of Smartmatic’s product would be its consistent flawless performance in the elections the machines have served.

What may be clear at this opoint is that it has been decided early on during the pre-bid stage that Smartmatic may be the team to beat so the lackeys may hav appointed TIM as its counterpart in order to control the foreigners, their machines, their systems. Failing to convince Smartmatic to allow tampering during the South America trip, they instructed TIM to withdraw from the consortium, blackmailing Smartmatic. The timing was impeccable. No coincidence here.

On the other hand, TIM may be a straight player and not wanting to have a hand in any cheating that may have been arranged (maybe as a result of the trip to South AMerica), they are pulling out knowing fully well that the admin will not force them to speak out the real deal behind the fiasco as it may have ugly results. And that the bond may even be refunded.

What bothers me is the huge performance bond that have been posted. Why will they allow forfeiture of such huge amount? Maybe it wasn’t their money after all?

The third scenario is that TIM did want to control the consortium but was not allowed by Smartmatic, in order to preserve the integrity of the brand. TIM may be a dirty player independent of the usual cheats and instead of Garci, they want to centralize the cheating within the consortium, thus making a fatter profit overall. It makes sense that they “dived” in the bidding by P4B lower than the nearest competitor because it will be compensated by “cheating income” in all future elections.

    Which one is it?

  65. For the good of country means TIM was being pressured by powerful people into committing a crime with the same magnitude as ZTE.
