Interesting Taguig politics

But the battle for the congressional seat of the second district of Taguig City will not be just between Reyes and Tinga because there’s another candidate that will make it interesting: 39-years old former Navy Lieutenant senior grade James Layug.

James Layug
James Layug
The other day, there were two stories on reversals of results of the 2004 elections. One was the case of Angelito “Jett” Reyes against incumbent Henry Duenas of the second district of Taguig City and the other one is the protest of Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel versus Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, notoriously known as the senator from Maguindanao.

Pimentel said in the recount by the Senate Electoral Tribunal of the questioned votes of the 2007 elections, he is already ahead of Zubiri by 96,400. This is the reason why he has declined the invitation of former President Estrada to join his senatorial slate.

The press release from Reyes, son of Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes, said he was ecstatic over the decision of the Supreme Court, by a 7-5 vote to deny a petition for certiorari filed by Henry Duenas to stop the recounting of the 2007 election results in second district of Taguig City.

With the SC decision the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal can now continue its recount of votes on the election protest filed by Reyes against Duenas.

Duenas was proclaimed winner in 2007 with 28,564 votes against Reyes’ 27,107 votes and Arturo Alit’s 22,264 votes.

The HRET recount has reduced the 1,457-vote lead of Duenas to 166 and later to just 34 after physical evaluation and appreciation of the ballots in the 100 percent of the precincts identified by Reyes in his protest and in 25 percent of Duenas’ counter-protested precincts.

Duenas was able to get a temporary restraining order on the recount which the High Court later lifted .

With the continuation of the recounting, Reyes said he is confident the election fraud committed min Taguig City would be corrected.

It is just hoped that the HRET resolves it soon with only less than a year to go in the term of Duenas.

While Reyes and Duenas are battling over the less than a year left in the 14th Congress, preparations are also underway for the 2010 elections which might see a former Supreme Court justice (Dante Tinga) and a cabinet official (Angelo Reyes) fighting over the mayorship of the fast-rising Taguig City.

Only in the Philippines!

The talk in Taguig is that incumbent mayor Freddie Tinga, whose commitment to the anti-drug campaign geatly disappoints the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, is going to run in place of Duenas. If Reyes, succeeds in unseating Duenas, Tinga would be challenging the incumbent.

But the battle for the congressional seat of the second district of Taguig City will not be just between Reyes and Tinga because there’s another candidate that will make it interesting: 39-years old former Navy Lieutenant senior grade James Layug.

Layug’s candidacy is part of the new thrust of the Magdalo to participate in any arena where the people want them to be.

Another Magdalo officer Antonio Trillanes IV, paved the political path with his phenomenal win in the 2007 senatorial elections. Aside from Layug, two other Magdalo officers are running in the 2010 elections: former Marine Captain Gary Alejano for mayor in Sipalay, Negros Occidental and former Air Force Lieutenant Ashley Acedillo for the first district of Cebu City.

Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, the new supremo of the Magdalo, has declared that he will be seeking election for national position next year.

A Magdalo friend, Dante Langkit, detained like four other officers, will be running for the lone congressional seat of Kalinga. Langkit is facing mutiny charges for something that did not happen in February 2006.

Layug expects to be allowed to campaign but even behind bars he said in a statement posted in his blog “our spirits are not broken.”

He said, “ The iron bars and walls of confinement cannot deter us from pursuing our aspirations for a better country. We were blessed with a very rich and beautiful nation but our leaders have robbed us of our rightful share of these blessings. They took away hope from our people and chained us into poverty. It is time to stand up, reclaim what is ours, and assert our sovereign will. We will not go down without a fight and much more lose this country by default. The Filipino people deserve a better life. Our children deserve a life of peace, progress, and prosperity.”

Layug, PMA Class ’95, is a multi-awarded officer. A member of the elite Navy Special Warfare Group, Layug has been recognized for leading navy SW units anti-illegal logging, anti-illegal fishing and anti-drug operations.

When he was under Task Force Comet, he took part in the rescue operation of tourists kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf from the Dos Palmas resort in Palawan and in the recovery of American Jeffrey Schilling in Sulu.

In all his military assignments, Layug brought the armed forces closer to the people by participating and initiating assorted community development projects.

He is offering a different kind of politics for the people of the second district of Taguig City.

THE BIRTH OF A NEW GENERATION of politicians!

Go on marching, boys! Patnubayan kayo ng Diyos.

  2. Sad that those who might or could make a difference to lift our military find no recourse other than the dirty playing field which is politics…But I can’t blame them.

They now must shed their military uniform for another trapo clothing and join the ranks of the military turned politicians in Congress who have become rather useless.

Good luck to all of them…

  3. I’d like to know, Ellen, if District 2 covers Bagumbayan where a lot of my in-laws are based.

  4. I’ll ask.

    AdeBrux,

I’m sure you are right. Let’s hope they won’t join the “rank” of Honassan.

We all know, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

  7. Honasan is a big disappointment! I just hope these officers turned politicians will not compromise like Honasan did with the bitch! The bitch must have a lot of “goods” on Honasan!

  8. nahnah nahnah

  9. chi chi

Makakatulong ako kay kay former Air Force Lieutenant Ashley Acedillo for the first district of Cebu City, yung sa iba ay wala akong kaibigan sa kanilang district.

May you all succeed, good luck!

  10. Rose Rose

Hindi naman seguro mag Hodasan ang mga ito..they seem to be a new breed of public servants willing and ready to serve the country..hindi naman sila gaya ni Gov. of Pampanga na iiwan ang pagsilbi sa Diyos para sa bayan kuno…his love for country is over and above his love to serve God…oh well buti na nga seguro ang ganyan..kasi kung manatili siyang pari baka maging Obispo pa…

    NO TO TRAPOS 2010!
    NO TO GLORIA AND FAMILY!
NO TO MALACANANG MAFIA AT ARROYO CORRUPT-PORATION!

  12. I have no problem with young idealistic military officers entering politics. We need people like them to help transform our political system. They are no TRAPOS and they can serve well in their country. I salute them, tuloy lang ang laban.

    NO TO TRAPOS 2010!
    NO TO GLORIA AND FAMILY!
NO TO MALACANANG MAFIA AT ARROYO CORRUPT-PORATION!

    Haaayy! Sayang!

    Magkagayunman, go go go, Magdalo!

is the fort part of the second district? i know that it is part of taguig. definitely we need uncorrupted people there. lot of new condos where mostly foreigners and balikbayans own.

  21. taga-ilog taga-ilog

    perl,

  22. I will support Layug — there’s no question about it. A junior officer who has the honour and the integrity to defy and challenge illegal and unlawful orders must have our active support.

This comes with a caveat — that he must remain true to the ideals that he espouses, eg., the cleansing of corruption in our govt and the respect for the rule of law. Full stop!

  23. “the cleansing of corruption” — the eradication of corruption in govt

Sayang.

  25. The conditions that the Republic find herself in is caused first and foremost by corruption at all levels of govt and which have permeated every fabric of Philippine society.

No society is perfect but that imperfection can be minimised through good governance and the Philippines is one of those countries that do not recognise nor know good governance.

To admit that corruption cannot be eliminated or minimised is to condemn the Philippines and its people to an agonizing decay.

Corruption is a killer in the fullest sense of the term.

Corruption should be treated as a heinous crime.

  26. Ellen,

    Re: Henry Duenas

Is he related to the late MGen Duenas of the Philippine Air Force?

  27. I will also support Langkit. for Kalinga. I have many friends in Baguio and will contact them to see how we can do it.

  28. The SWAG (Navy Special Warfare Group) is perhaps my favourite special ops unit in the Philippine military.

These men not only have raw courage, they have integrity and honour. I know many of them quite well and have seen/observed some of their training and followed some of their adventures. They live a spartian life in general even in private.

The Rangers (PA) have the same motto but unfortunately some of their members who have achieved senior ranks have become corrupted.

  29. I know for a fact that former CSAFP and DND chief Reyes used “to fear” them.

  30. chi chi

“War is to politics and vis-a-vis”

Soldiering require the discipline to oftentimes do the unthinkable, politicians require the skill to persuade others to do the unthinkable. Lt James Layug PN is 39 and looks 29, has given his share in the military and now wants to serve in a higher capacity, as a member of congress. Its a tall order but so is wanting that SeAL Badge. Not everyone becomes a member of the special forces like the Rangers or in the case of James, the Navy Special Warfare Group. Yes it is a shame the Navy will say goodbye to another investment. There are others who will carry on and then work abroad soon. The voters of Taguig’s 2nd District should get to know him. He is in for a tough fight that’s for sure but it is his decision. Decisions are the core of every officers existence, and James has made his, he is tough being a SeAL commando, and this is just another evolution for him (Oliyaah!). Tinga, Reyes, or Layug? Tinga is some dart board at PDEA, Reyes is some dart board at Polk street, but Layug … walang sex video yan maginoo pero marunong din kumanta ng careless whisper kaya ingat sila.

Many former soldiers have themselves become politicians, James is not the first nor will he be the last. We have the most senior ranking officer who has expressed interest in running for a senate seat, no other than the distinguished BGen. Danilo Lim AFP, a good man, and I respect his decision, but saddened that the Army will be deprived once again of another valuable weapon system like him, in a war the generals tiger mind will run you down. One can love the Army so much, but the Army does not have to reciprocate. We Have Medal of Valor awardee Col Querubin Ariel O PN(M) who may also seek a senate seat. Toto Alejano is also running in the “chicks area” specifically Sipalay what the hell were you thinking mabait yan si Toto, maginoo. Ashley “Ace” Acedillo …lesson 8 does not make him sweat, he’s very humble with his auto-rotation, always at 6600RPM and not a scratch on the tail skid. Should he win, he is not going to let us all down. OK yan si Ace, “rock steady” in formation flying and so will his performance be if elected. The challenges facing him now is not to hover OGE near detachment skylark at an elevation where his “slick” (UH-1H) is at max torque with treacherous cross winds, or do SAR in bad weather, flying dead soldiers that makes one vomit with the foul odor followed by avoiding the mess hall, loss of weigh. Or Jet A-1 in some tool box. Tong-its, boredom, being away from loved ones. No water at 4AM in the TOQ. Flying pay helps, but its the base pay that matters when retirement arrives. Those are not his challenges anymore, its a different animal he has to deal with, this one will accelerate his aging, its called elections…and if he gets the mandate oh boy…politics of compromising, it can loosen anyone’s Jesus nut. His cooking partner is in PDEA, not cooking anything, mabait din yun. There is nothing new or wrong with soldiers entering politics. Leadership is taught even to a corporal, an NCO is the first line of leadership, leading his squad, managing the different personality in it and maintaining unit cohesion when all hell breaks loose. The higher you go, the lonelier it gets. A former Marine Technical Sergeant is vice-mayor of a town in Batangas. Former soldiers can serve as elected officials too, and many serve us well.

Indeed many have distinguished themselves since they left the military to enter politics. At the senate for instance is the young Sen. Trillanes, he serves us all diligently, I mean it. Its quality legislation like SBN3222, SBN3270 and SBN3280 just to mention a few of the many he has filed, the legislative mill is as slow as the wheels of justice but it grinds anyhow, he is still young and full of potential. From a navy lieutenant to a senator that’s one giant leap for man there. Impressive if you ask me because not even a pathetic retired Navy Captain stuck in congress can make the jump to the senate. His inability to participate in any senate hearings in a way helps him, but as they say oversight is also a function of a senator, just that the senate hearings all look pointless even when there was something “somewhat” positive (pero kulang) that came out of it. I guess that’s why Sen. Trillanes pours it on crafting legislative measures and does not look like some politician hogging the TV. Sen. Lacson is spearheading the efforts to clean the upper chamber not to hog the TV cameras, but to go after a crook and former “lower” house gansta rapper named villar, Sen. Lacson’s credentials speaks for itself, his accomplishments are not embellished. Another cavalier with a distinguished career in the military is Sen. Rodolfo Biazon, the geniuses are the one who gets the presidential saber, and the one who is class goat. Not easy being the class goat and Gen. Biazon is said to be one. I know a few who left the military and became members of the lower house personally. They are good people. And they are not in my OB, meaning they did not vote for HR1109.

For those in doubt, subukan muna sila, if they are as they advertise themselves then re-elect, pero kung hindi, eh sorry na lang din. Register now and do vote in 2010. If you for any reason hate them, then don’t vote for them, but if you like to give them a chance to prove themselves…take life ka..then very brave ka tulad nila. Ganon naman talaga ang buhay. No risk, no gain.

James, Gary, and Ashley. Gentlemen, your time has come, welcome to above ground struggle.

  37. I like the part of what James said: “We were blessed with a very rich and beautiful nation but our leaders have robbed us of our rightful share of these blessings. They took away hope from our people and chained us into poverty. It is time to stand up, reclaim what is ours, and assert our sovereign will. We will not go down without a fight and much more lose this country by default.”

This is the real essence of what we Filipinos have been fighting for: Reclaim what is ours. Yes let us reclaim the nation we inherited. Let us not accept what has been replaced by the Americans when they invaded us in 1899.

We already had a nation, a republic, a constitution, an organinc Academia Militar, an official language, a developing national system. We were masters of our fatherland.

Today, the Americans control our military and foreign policy. The Chinese, with American support in the 1900s, control our economy. Our government, both genuine and fake, collaborate with these foreign invaders to perpetuate their control on us.

Yes, let us support James vision of reclaimong what is ours and assert our sovereign will.

  38. The approach may be different, but the objective is the same

  39. I heard that James Layug’s dad recently passed away. My condolences to you and your family. The family prepared for only 1500 guests but 5000 people came to the burial. If this is an indication of his popularity, patok na patok si James. Taguig is the home of our SOLDIERS. They know the real man to legislate for them. Definitely not the son of the corrupt Reyes!

I believe that the 2010 elections, if not done with computerized cheating, will be the turning point of all our elections. The people will be wiser in voting and the youth will be the lead voters.

  40. marlon marlon

  41. PSB, it was the father of Capt. Gary Alejano who passed away recently. Our condolences to Gary.

  42. If the final decision comes out that Koko Pimentel is the true winner, what happens to the time Migz position as Senator. It’s not fair. The election law should be amended to give back to the rightful winner the period that was taken from him as the duly elected public official. It reminds me of one Pasig congressman who won the electoral protest but was able only to act as congressman for one day.

The corrupt Angie Reyes was the CSAFP nung comptroller pa niya si MGen Garcia. Get the picture?

O-11957 I did not forget you. One word – “Astig!”

To the north, specifically the province of Kalinga Apayao, Army Captain Dante D. Langkit will run for congress. Give the young captain a chance to prove himself in a different arena. He has a high pain threshold. If he can take “enhanced interrogation methods” imagine what he is willing to endure for you, yes for you. In congress he won’t be intimidated. Kasi astig eh.

    Welcome to above ground struggle.

  52. Norpil, Chi, The Fort or Global City is part of second district of taguig City.

Bagumbayan, I’m told, is not in the second district.

Salamat mayroong isang Capt.

Very good decision Capt.

Capt. Dante D. Langkit!

    Thanks, Ellen.

Kausap ko lang ang aking pinsan dyan sa The Fort and he and friends are already aware of James candidacy. Yup, ‘magkakalat’ na sila, hehehe.

    Tuloy ang laban, Magdalo!

    Balweg,

Ka-swerte ninyo kapag nahalal si Kapitan Astig! I don’t know anybody from your region, but I’ll pray hard for Dante Langkit’s victory.

  61. Chi, that’s the point of the Magdalo’s decision to take the path of electoral politics: to form a bloc in Congress (that includes House of Representatives and the Senate) and in the bureaucracy of reform-oriented public servants so that Filipinos could be given a government that truly serves and protects them.

  62. chi chi

Ako ang me sabi n’yan, PSB.

A very noble goal indeed, Ellen.

    Magdalo for the Filipinos!

  63. Balweg Balweg

  64. Ironically, while we are talking about Taguig, INC’s founder Felix Manalo was born in Taguig. INC is observing and celebrating its 95th Anniversary. I hope they march to Malacanang after their celebration just like last Edsa Three.
