Nonoy declares presidential bid

noynoy declaration

With those words, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, declared his presidential bid for the 2010 elections in an morning press conference on the 40th day of the passing of his mother, President Corazon Aquino, at Club Filipino, the same venue where she took her historic oath on Feb. 25, 1986 after the ouster of President Ferdinand Marcos.

Aquino praised Sen. Mar Roxas, who gave up his presidential plans , for him. He said he offered the vice presidential slot to Roxas, who has yet to decide.

In a casual, non-bombastic speech, he related stories of his encounter with people on the streets that made him decide to accept the challenge.

Nonoy related his encounter with a Customs official, who expressed happiness when he said he would run. Asked why, the official said, “Kasi pwede na ako ulit mangarap.”

Wearing black with the yellow ribbon pin, he was surrounded by his sisters, Ballsy, Pinky, Viel and Kris and yellow-clad supporters, mostly belonging to what media calls “civil society.”

Shalani Soledad
Shalani Soledad
Girlfriend Shalani Soledad, also in black, was also present.

On the issue of corruption asked by a reporter, he said he will fight it by example. He said we have enough laws against corruption and it’s a matter of implementing it.

He made special mention of the case of fellow senator, Antonio Trillanes IV, who is currently in detention after he and his fellow officers and soldiers exposed corruption in the military in the Arroyo administration. he said he did not believe that Trillanes is guilty of a crime of coup d’etat that he is accused of.

Sen. Rodolfo Biazon started the piso-piso fund campaign for Noynoy.

Noynoy reminded everybody to make sure that every contribution is listed because they would have to submit that to the Commission on Elections. There was laughter, the audience probably relating it to the case of Mikey Arroyo who did not declare with the Comelec he received in the 2004 and 2007 campaign contributions.

  1. Dang! Would have wanted to hear him first present his platform/agenda, argue issues and defend his position. Riding on the Aquino name is a good gimmick but dang, same thing all over again… ayayayayayay!

Ayan, the civil society has all the reasons to have an “orgasmic experience”.

Oh my, no forward step for Juan!

  3. And guess what? The Arroyos will be so happy with Aquino’s declaration; civil society will be so exhilirated over the Aquino candidacy, having orgasm after orgasm which should give crooked brat Mikey a reprieve from press attacks.

It’s imperative not to get drowned out by this latest election excitement. Pinoys must focus! Shoot the enemy first, eg., Arroyo, and then see where we are at with 2010 elections.

Just my humble thought on the matter!

  4. chi chi

    “Pwede na tayo ulit mangarap,”

    Nang ano?

  5. Chi!

    Heheheh!

Nonoy Aquino excites women in Civil Society kasi — even the nuns! He makes them come, wait, not finished yet… “come alive!” Hihihh!

  6. chi chi

    Hahaha! Naughty you.

  7. Ellen,

I’m so dismayed! The same old way… Riding on another oligarchic name!

There was no debate, no public discussion, no nothing — just the same name recall tactic. Might as well re-elect Erap kung ganyan ng ganyan paulit ulit… Just because one has the name, sige ng sige.

Filipinos will never be democratically mature because they prefer to stay backward.

  8. parasabayan parasabayan

When he starts to talk and answer the issues then the people will make up their minds. Maybe he is a late bloomer, for all we know. At least he is principled daw. That is a good start. Super naman ang ginawa nilang pa-suspense!

  9. parasabayan parasabayan

Ramos and de Venicia are breaking away from the boobuwit. Sino naman kaya ang magiging manok nila. Hindi na lang minority president yung mananalo kundi yung nanalo ng 10% of the vote! The 90% of the people will be working on removing whoever wins for the next 6 years. Kawawang bansa talaga.

  10. PSB,

I have nothing against Aquino ersonally; I don’t know him from Adam; all I know is that he’s been as quiet as a mouse in Congress. Late bloomer? When will he bloom? When he’s 75? Good or bad? Well, maybe yes, maybe no.

I’m sure he is more principled than Arroyo can ever be but that’s not my point. What I’m dismayed about is the selection process. The Civil Society’s control over what should have been a democratic process, na-short-changed na naman ang mga Pinoy.

Time to bury that kind of practice, don’t you think? After all, we are already in the 21st century. We gotta be a bit mature.

  11. parasabayan parasabayan

Anna, I heard Noynoy being interviewed one on one in several talk shows. Kris is the one making decisions for Noynoy plus the other sisters( yung tunay na kapatid at yung mga madre…heh, heh, heh). Whether their manok holds up is another thing. Sabagay in a country where 70% of the people barely gets three meals a day, kahit sino na lang pwede na.

  12. chi chi

No excitement waiting for the presidentiables declare their intent to ‘serve’ the public. How many are they kaya eventually?

  13. parasabayan parasabayan

Noynoy is also another elite. I do not know why they say he represents the “masa”.

  14. andres andres

The site of the Evil Society makes me puke!

  15. Why should more than 90 million Filipinos allow themselves to be led by the nose by one lil elitist group that doesn’t even total a few hundred?

Suddenly, coming from nowhere, this group says, “Ok guys, here’s your candidate, we have anointed him for you! Vote for him because he’s got pedigree, his Mom is a saint and because Gloria is bad…”

Puwede ba yon sa isang mature democracy? This is my point.

  16. chi chi

I really would like to see a one-on-one race between Noynoy and Erap. It’s just impossible due to a lot of wannabes.

  17. mbw mbw

    time to fervently pray.

Noynoy is known for his honesty and simplicity. After all the sophisticated economic savy of Gloria for her own/ family interests, this now what the country needs—a moral leadership. I recall nuon (during Cory’s time), we were clamoring for an economically savvy leader, di ba? Let’s just get all our positive thoughts together and pray for balanced and wise leadership.

  18. Chi,

The least evil, if one can say that in my list of presidential wannabes, would’ve been Roxas. I’ve been reading about him a lot lately and it seems he’s a bit better than most. They should have interviewed the two, Aquino and Roxas (both are Civil Society mascots anyway) and see who would fare better.

Isa pa, he’s the only one who ever said “Putangina” kay Gloria and that to me at least, is already a step in the right direction.

  19. andres andres

Yuck!!!

Still a big NO for Noynoy for me!

  20. “time to fervently pray.”

The nuns are already doing that… that’s theire expertise. I’m sure they have a direct line to St Peter.

Don’t forget, Gloria is praying as well!

Time to move and kick ass is what I say!

  21. chi chi

I have no qualms about Noynoy but just really disappointed with the manner LP chose the party’s bet, no selection process.

  22. Ako din Chi! Difficult to say anything bad about him — he’s been so quiet all these years, one would have thought he was the one that died!

  23. What I abhor is the same name recall process of selecting a presidential standard bearer, forcing others who, perhaps, are also as bad or as good, to back down/to yield on the mere say so of a group!

Para sa mga Civil Society kasi, Aquino is the sexiest thing that hit them after Arnold Schwarzenager!

  24. andres andres

Icon of the civil society kasi ang mga Aquino

  25. chi chi

    Anna,

Roxas was my choice but won’t be disappointed with Noynoy as LP’s bet if only the two were subjected to a fair process.

Trapol na tradpol ang ginawa ng LP.

  26. chi chi

“…he’s been so quiet all these years, one would have thought he was the one that died!”

Ikaw talaga, Anna. Hahahaha! Having a good laugh!

  27. parasabayan parasabayan

Mbw, a leader is suppposed to have morals but a capability too as well. Decisions have to be made in split seconds hindi isang linggo. I do not think Noynoy is a born leader. But hey, we elected Lapid to the senate di ba? We also elected Erap. You know what I mean. Watch it! It will come. The civil society will oust him anew because of inability to stop corruption. Now you want him to lead the country? There are so many big fishes to catch. Kung hindi niya nakayanan yung isang big fish, how will he be able to lead the country? If he had a proven track record in the senate man lang sana, then I would believe he can lead. Yung kontin palaban man lang.

  28. Good for him.

  29. What can I say but, asuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus!

Yup, what’s this Aquino has for a platform? Kagustuhan daw ng sambayanan? I doubt!

Ipagpapatuloy daw ang adhikain ng nanay niya? Which one? Iyong patalsikin ang mga Arroyo from Malacanang? Oh yeah? Kailan?

My impression—wala rin iyang yagbols! But did he need to be lovey-dovey to the creep? Sa totoo lang dapat di niya binigyan ng respeto dahil kriminal as prescribed by the law! 😛

I’m not impressed. I just feel sorrow and sympathy for the Philippines and the Filipino people. Another round of pahirap pihado!

    Kawawang bansa sa totoo lang!

  30. parasabayan parasabayan

Correction: A leader is supposed to have not just morals but a cabability to lead as well.

  31. florry florry

Noynoy finally declared his candidacy. Everybody knows that Roxas withdrew because he told him that he will run, bakit nagpakipot pa kesyo mag-re retreat muna, magconsult muna bago magdecide? Did he really think the people were so dumb to not see this as a political gimmick? Hindi pa man nanloloko at namumulitika na.

So after talking to God in his retreat, Noynoy may now claim to be anointed and assume the role of a modern day Moses who will lead the Filipinos from their sufferings, poverty and injustices into the Promised Land, the land of flowing milk and honey. But just like in that particular episode Moses failed his people who are left to wander. He failed because God failed him. Maybe because he cannot control his people; in short it’s a question of his leadership.

And Noynoy, what is his brand of leadership? In all his political life he was never been a leader but always a follower. He was also a Gloria ally and like Cory and her evil society they are instrumental in ousting a duly elected president and handed power to the monster of Philippine politics. What does he have to offer then? The revival and awakening of the Kamag-anak Inc? Because he is a perceived softie he will just be used and manipulated. He will be no different from Gloria and company.

Noynoy is pre-mature for the picking. Kinakarboro siya para mapilit na mahinog. In these extraordinary times in Philippine history, the country needs a strong and decisive leader to if necessary overhaul the entire government bureaucracy and machinery that was wrecked by the evil family of Arroyo. Noynoy seems to be so weak and indecisive; it’s just like putting a square peg into a round hole. It doesn’t fit. It doesn’t help that he is an Aquino. It doesn’t help either that he is the anointed one of the evil society, nuns, bishops, priest and the yellow society.

Yes, because the reality is he doesn’t have what it takes to navigate the country out of the woods in these troubled times.

What is Noynoy going to do with his uncle Peping and Aunt Tingting who are still aligned with Gloria Arroyo?

And also Aunt Lupita and Tessie Oreta and uncle Paul.

I like this, Florry. Me, the daughter of a hero and a former president and sister of the incumbent…” That will be the day—baka wasakin na ng Diyos ang Pilipinas pag nagkataon!

Kawawang Pilipinas! Mabuburo na lang yata!

  37. florry florry

Maybe Noynoy believes that his secret weapon to win the presidency is the prayers of his supporters, especially the nuns, bishops and priests. There is a power of prayer but God doesn’t take sides in a political battle. That’s how fair He is. God gives us once in awhile a gentle nudge, but they do not lead us down the road to our destiny. It’s us who have to write our own.

  38. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

In my opinion, Mar should have been the LP standard bearer. Capability and integrity, he has. Noynoy has the integrity but his capability is doubtful. But again water under the bridge na.

As for Noynoy being elite and therefore not masa, this is true. He is not masa but he could also be for the masa. Erap was elite but he was for the masa. Cory was elite but she was loved by the masa.

So I guess time will tell. He just might surprise people by growing into the job. But I agree that he should not mention consulting with his sisters too much.

But hey, these are minor matters. What’s important for me now is that there is now an honest man as an alternative to all the other presidentiables. An honest man has the moral force to prevent or at least minimize graft and corruption. And as 40% of our budget is wasted on corruption, a moral leader can do much.

I just hope Noynoy steps up to what is expected of him. That’s all I can do at the moment. And if he does not, well, remind him to shape up.

Anyway, with him and Mar as a tandem, I am hopeful.

  39. parasabayan parasabayan

An honest man alone can not solve our problems. We might as well elect Fr Panlilio.

  40. parasabayan parasabayan

Phil, if after nine years of legislative work, he failed to pass bills into law eh di lalo ng hindi niya kakayanin ang maging presidente!

Yung ngang speech niya binabasa pa niya. Bulol bulol pa.

At this point in time I have simplified my dreams.

All I want is to be able to wake up each day and carry on with my daily activities in tranquility and peace of mind with my blood pressure normal.

I dream of not being greeted by news each evening and morning of multi-billion peso scams, of secret sweetheart deals, of buying off legislators and judges, including bishops.. I also dream of never seeing another Malacanang spokesman daily assaulting the nation with their arrogance, lies and spins.

I also dream of our people going about their business of living life in pursuit of their dreams and visions for themselves and their children in an atmosphere of peace and joy.

At the end of each day I want to be able to just curl up with a book or watch National Geographic Channel and be able to say

“Ahh..the country is in good hands. This is the life.”

  42. parasabayan parasabayan

  43. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Di parang robot ang labas niya. Extreme make-over (physical appearance) is not enough to convince intelligent voters for their vote and support.

  44. parasabayan parasabayan

    Sinabi mo pa Diego.

  45. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Parasabayan, as I said Noynoy was not my preferred Presidentiable. I preferred Mar. But since Mar gave way to him, then it’s water under the bridge. It’s now up to the LP to finally choose and proclaim their standard bearer. It’s not yet final. But I’m a bit comfortable with Noynoy at this point in time.

I certainly have considered other presidentiables. And the biggest question in my mind is “Whom can I trust?”

For me personally it has become a simple question of “trust”. The capability comes next. Capability and expertise can be shored up and learned with good honest capable men around you.

Noynoy’s capability will first be tested (should he become President) by his choice of men and women to assist him do his job. I would like to see him choose people with the capabilities and expertise which he lacks. This is basically how you initially detect a good leader, a good manager..his ability to recruit and select capable and trustworthy people to run his various departments for him.

The Chief Executive primarily provides the morale compass, the vision and the values he holds dear and corrects behavior that goes against his guidelines.

In my work life, I have always held the view that given a limited choice, a moderately intelligent but honest employee is better than a dishonest genius.

  46. parasabayan parasabayan

I may respect Ninoy for his character but I do not see him as a leader at a time when our country is at the bottom in Asia. We need someone who has a vision, a will to make changes, someone who can fight the big fishes and stop corruption.

In his speech today, yun daw mga libro ng mga bata ang priority niya at allocation of funds. Instead of saying he will stir the country to a more progressive and corrupt free country, yung libro ang una sa kanyang agenda. Pwede siguro siyang maging Deped head at head ng NEDA but not a president.

  47. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I guess it’s always a limited choice when we talk about who would be the best candidate to run for President.

There are thousands out there (the private sector included)who are better qualified than those presently in the list but these people prefer not to join the race.

So we are left with a rather short list. And in that short list, you are left with only a few good men. Sometimes not even one. But in this present list, I’m comfortable with one or two. They’re certainly not perfect, but who is?

  48. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Let us not forget that two of the biggest crooks in our nation’s history were said to be the smartest and the most prepared. One was an outstanding lawyer. The other an economics professor.

@AdeBrux : “What I’m dismayed about is the selection process. The Civil Society’s control over what should have been a democratic process, na-short-changed na naman ang mga Pinoy.”

That’s the elite’s style of choosing or disregarding a leader. They may call themselves elite but they have the mentality of “mob rule”. They did it in EDSA !, EDSA 2, and now they’re doing it again.

  54. girls,
I will not be a spoiler to what may be their (See-Evil Society’s) moment of ecstasy. But let me point out two realities that now stare Noynoy (and all his “pushers”) in the face:

    1. There is a strong possibility that the 2010 contest will be a one-on-one match between two Cojuangco cousins – Noynoy and Gibo. Oh, they forgot about that.

    2. His call for unity of the party may bring the prodigals in LP’s Atienza wing back to the fold. They were one of the first to advance the idea of a Noynoy candidacy I can smell fish from a mile away. I am suspicious of Atienza’s intentions moreso when it was echoed by known Arroyo lapdogs like Alex Magno, et al. Is Noynoy considered a soft target because his “strong Catholic values” that may include the forgiveness of past sins in favor of unity – whoever’s sins that may be? Will Atienza et al use their newfound party clout, if ever, to demand for laxity in future cases?

  55. xman xman

Mar Roxas is more qualified to run as President than this Noynoy. Just look at the accomplishments of Mar in business world compare to Noynoy. Mar graduated at Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania which is in the top three business school in the world.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wharton_School_of_the_University_of_Pennsylvania

But, what can you expect from Philippine politics selection process? Just look at what occured between Lacson and FPJ? Erap chose FPJ over Lacson even though FPJ is 100% TANGA! Of course, FPJ is still a better choice than pandak’s criminal government.

The bakya crowd is equally to blame for this mess that we are in, they just vote whoever is popular. Another example is Mr. Noted Pangilinan. The bakya crowd voted him as Senator just because he got married with Cuneta.

I would like to know how he will deal with the abuses, the crimes that Gloria committed against the people.

I don’t want to simply hear this crap phrase “Let’s move on!”

  61. I would like to know how he (Aquino) will deal with the abuses, the crimes that Gloria committed against the people.

  62. romyman romyman

I don’t want to know what Noynoy’s view on anything at all and for that matter any candidate vying for the presidency.

Whatever they tell us are just are feel good words. In short mga bola. Basta sa presidency anybody but Gloria. We have enough of her and her minions.

  63. Statement of Bangon Pilipinas:

Bangon Pilipinas respects the decision of Senator Noynoy Aquino to run for President in the 2010 elections. His participation in the presidential race ensures Filipinos a wider choice of candidates from which to select our country’s next leader. The essence of democracy and people empowerment is choice, and now is the time for all candidates to present to the people the true nature of their choices by focusing away from personalities and emotions, but more on the alternative future that they can promise our people.

We now strongly call on all presidential candidates in 2010 to build up respective platform of government so we could present them to the public.

Let the people decide whom they want to lead in effectuating genuine change in the country. Let us give democracy a chance.

Let us now collectively join our efforts so that we can have a credible, peaceful, and honest election in 2010.

  64. These are clearly extraordinary times, and 2010, if ever that happens, will not be an ordinary electoral exercise.

Democracy has not matured, nor, will it ever mature because democracy isn’t here.

Most of you may disagree with me, but I see 2010 as a repeat of 1986 where battle lines are drawn not between good and better platforms (which, as we may have learned, are mere promises waiting to be broken once a winner’s hand is raised) but more between honesty and treachery, between good and evil, indeed, between heaven and hell.

I may be so naive for having been swept by the current turn of events leading to the ‘clamor’ for Noynoy to run. But, I believe, these signs are pointing to better directions.

Among those who threw their hats in on the presidential derby early on, it was only Mar Roxas, whom, I thought would present the least evil. Then, Among Ed, for awhile, decided to join the fray. Clearly, then, neither Mar nor Among Ed, better than the rest of the field as they are, did not show any signs of possibly winning in 2010.

With the ‘clamor’ borne of Cory’s passing, and with the eventual acceptance of Noynoy for him to contest the presidency, I believe, we now have an alternative who is, at least, untainted and winnable.

It has been repeated here several times over that Noynoy does not have any track record to back him up. I agree. But I would rather go for an unknown quantity than for anybody who has a track record of wrongdoings- and among the wannabe’s, who does not have any skeletons in the closet?

It has been repeated here several times over that Noynoy had been so quiet during his entire public life. I agree. But, as the cliche goes, silent waters do run deep.

I saw footages of his press conference this morning. In one part, he sounded like laying down his platform. He talked about justice being for everybody and not just for the privileged class, saying that, in these times, it has generaly been ‘just tiis’ for most of us. He also talked about the current state of education under an ‘uneducated’ DepEd, citing the routinary mistakes in textbooks year in and year out. I believe that these two issues, justice and education, are good starting points.

Finally, I think, our issue now is not to look for democratic or political maturity- not yet, at least. Our issue is more of bringing democratic space and political sanity first. I do not expect Noynoy to do that. However, with Noynoy, I am praying that we can all make that happen.

  65. In many ways, I echo Phil Cruz’s sentiment above.

  66. OK, Ka Enchong, your points make sense and most important of all, I like what you said,

“Our issue is more of bringing democratic space and political sanity first. “

Agree. We need to clear the air. Let’s see where the current exercise takes us next.

  67. Tongue,

    Who is “Gibo”?

  68. sandinista sandinista

I agree with Phil Cruz… who can I trust is the only criteria left given the choices that we have as presidentiables.. I would have preferred if we have a Lee Kwan Yew or a Mahathir clone in the Philippines, but unfortunately we don’t..

Just finished reading the second memoirs of Lee Kwan Yew this morning and what struck me is a statement in his epilogue chapter in which a truth in governance struck an accord with what is happening in our country. LKY said that at the end of the day, intellectual capability is not the most important trait in governance, but the ability of the leader to convey a message of hope and vision that people will follow, and that the people TRUSTS the leader… Kasi nga raw regardless of the system of government or the PhD background of a leader, if the people do not trust him/her, there is no governance to speak of.

Tama si Phil, even LKY recognized the fact that most of the citizenry just want their basic needs and simple dreams to be addressed — health, housing, and education.. I also dream of the day, like Phil, that I don’t feel depress watching our local news (which I literally stopped watching since 2005 after the Garci incident).

“Aquino vows to go after Marcos wealth”

  70. Let’s support Noynoy, an ordinary man who will not cheat, lie or steal!

  71. Tedanz, that was my initial reaction when I read inquirer article. Why single out Marcos wealth?

Where do Arroyo corruption and crimes come in?

  72. norpil norpil

pinoys are emotional hence this craving immediately after the death of his mother. the opportunist came out of his personality an now want to become president. a guy whose greatest accomplishment so far is being the child of his parents. it will be too much to demand that a kapampangan will run after the arroyos.

  73. Tedanz Tedanz

    AdeBrux,
    Erap is still my Guy!!!!!

  74. EQ,

You have questions to Aquino in your blog that should not be waylaid — it is imperative that he address these questions immediately.

1)Boss Danding:How will Noynoy handle the sequestered shares in SMC?

2)Kamag-anak Inc.:How will Noynoy handle the unsolicited advices and expected political meddling from his political clan?

3)Hacienda Luisita:How will he tackle the agrarian reform program and its obvious impact on his clan’s 6,453 sugar estate?

  75. Tedanz Tedanz

  77. Norpil,

a guy whose greatest accomplishment so far is being the child of his parents.

That’s how I see him today. I’ve never been a great fan of his mother, although I appreciated her decency even after she behaved very foolishly in 2001. I was never a fan of his father — and I say this loud and clear, but do recognize that the father had great courage.

Aquino has a few months to come out swinging and jabbing on his own, to prove that he is his own man. I would like to see that he is not the vindictive type like his mother was at the beginning of her presidency, but someone who will be level-headed and determined, someone who will not compromise moral principles for political expediencies.

I will be watching him, and based on how he comports himself within the next few months, I shall decide on whether he is worth my vote or not.

At this point in time I have simplified my dreams. – Phil Cruz

I heard those words first from my sister after Mar withdrew and threw in the name of Noynoy. And so do I….

  80. Democracy has not matured, nor, will it ever mature because democracy isn’t here.
    ——
    @Ka Enchong
totoo iyon ang meron lang origarkiya.

  81. chi chi

Actually, yung comments ni Kris tungkol sa pananamit, hair growth, etc ni Noynoy were just sister’s talk. They don’t bother me, parang pagmamahal sa kapatid na nabubulgar…si Kris yan e. In fact, I find them naively cute.

Also, Noynoy’s talks with his sisters for me is just normal.

With Mar out of the running for the highest post, I’m willing to give Noynoy a chance. Sabi ko nga, wala akong choice dahil siya ang best among the second bests being thrown my way.

And with Mar as VP, OK na rin sa mga panahong ito.

  82. martina martina

I am for Ninoy as of the moment, but anything can happen up to election time.

Let’s remind Noynoy that Gloria’s ill-gotten wealth is now in the millions of dollars, bilyunes na siguro.

I hate to go back to Tongue’s spoiler….naku!

  88. Chi,

Would be good just the same for any candidate, not only Aquino to declare loud and clear that if he/she wins, political criminals of the previous administation, whatever the level will be investigated, prosecuted, in other words, brought to justice.

  89. Tedanz Tedanz

“political criminals of the previous administation”

I meant political criminals “outgoing administration”.

I still believe that the only way to go forward and initiate a reform that will encompass the whole governance is for the Oppositions to sacrifice their own personal ambitions and rally behind one standard bearer and throw their support for only one goal and direction…forward…and each of them contribute their own Piece for a Programme and Platform that will be the guide and Direction of the Government in case given the Mandate by the Filipinos come Election Day…Be it Senator Aquino, Mar Roxas or anyone…But if each wants to be the next President, then chances is, the next one will be the same potato…

  98. Statement of Akbayan:

An administration that shall not enter into any compromises with Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, her family and her cronies. A government that shall commit to reverse the political and economic damages wrought by the Arroyo administration. A political leadership that shall use its authority and shall exercise political will to introduce basic reforms that would restore our faith in our own capacity to lead decent and honorable lives.

AKBAYAN made its first presidential endorsement with full appreciation of the fact that the 2010 elections is a make or break election for the country, and that the above considerations should be our main national agenda. Gloria does not only represent a backslide in our democracy – she symbolizes national degeneration; the 2010 elections is therefore an opportunity for the rebirth of our nation.

It is in this regard that we welcome and endorse the presidential bid of Senator Noynoy Aquino. Our support is premised on the same factors that we considered in endorsing Sen. Mar Roxas. Sen. Noynoy Aquino was among the first to repudiate the abuses committed by the Arroyo administration, from the ‘Hello Garci’ controversy to the graft-ridden NBN-ZTE deal, and he has likewise committed to hold the Arroyos accountable once GMA steps out of Malacanang. Sen. Aquino likewise appreciates the task he needs to face to restore the dignity of Filipinos if and once elected into office.

But more importantly, AKBAYAN sees Sen. Aquino as a symbol to a nation yearning for unity and greatness. What makes him so is not his political ambition but his lack of it. Sen. Aquino has reluctantly accepted a monumental challenge that has been thrust upon him. That alone tells us that Noynoy is no Gloria: his reluctance symbolizes honor in his brand of leadership, as compared to the latter’s orchestrated ascent to the presidency, and her subsequent manipulation of her authority to maintain her stay in power.

As with our previous endorsement of Sen. Mar Roxas, we are under no illusion that we will always have a common stand on all issues with Sen. Aquino. But we always go back to what Sen. Noynoy Aquino himself said when he spoke in our National Congress – that divergence of opinion should not be seen as a political burden. We shall forge ahead where unities exist; where differences are manifest, AKBAYAN shall continue to engage Sen. Aquino.

Our principles and our platform are our backbone as a political party, and AKBAYAN shall always be anchored in its commitment to pursue the interest of the majority of Filipinos who have been rendered voiceless by our political system. Our endorsement of Sen. Aquino is part of our quest to make our politics work for all of us, and not just to the entrenched few.

  99. Manuel,

With Roxas out of the race, can only agree with you.

Agree that there’s nothing wrong with trying to achieve the ambitions/dreams of one’s parents.

I would like to achieve the ambitions/dreams of my parents too, unfortunately I can’t. Not that I don’t want to, just that I haven’t got the ability or capacity to make their dreams come true.

Aquino will perhaps be more lucky/luckier…

From Conrado De Quiros column: DEAR ERAP

    http://opinion.inquirer.net/inquireropinion/columns/view/20090908-224129/Dear-Erap

“…I do not see how the person who took your place will allow you to run. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo fears a reprisal from you, and whatever guarantees you give her you will give to someone who knows what it means to say one thing and do another. It cannot help that you have shown a capacity for it too. Remember when you promised not to cross her in exchange for pardon and ended up joining the call for her to resign after the NBN?”

Is he saying that if it’s Noynoy who’ll be the chosen one of a united oppositon, Gloria will allow him to win and not cheat? That Noynoy will not get back at Gloria for all the crimes that she has committed against the Filipinos? From the way he wrote this letter/ column, he seems to be on bended knees while writing this… pleading to Erap that he gives up on another run at the presidency and to support Noynoy instead. Tsk.. tsk.

  104. anna, what happened to your gravatar?

  105. Mike Mike

Mr. De Quiros knows Erap has a big chance of winning and that for Noynoy to win, Erap should back out and support Noynoy’s candidacy. My question is: Why ask someone who has the biggest chance of winning to back-out, instead of the one who’s not?

  106. Ellen,

I don’t know… something or someone must have eliminated it — maybe because it’s “bold?” Heh!

  107. Haaay, naku. Lagi na lang tayong ganito. We will settle, AGAIN, for the second best. And we just turned the clock back six more years. For the meantime, politics of personalities muna uli tayo.

But the thing that always gets my goat is when they discredit Roxas via the Korina route while praising Noynoy via the Ninoy/Cory detour. Puta.

I hope that when we get there, the moral decay in Phil. politics, and Phil. society in general, will not be worse than the state it is in today.

  108. parasabayan parasabayan

Tongue, I am so looking forward to Sonny Boy too! The way I see it, it will be six years of walang pagbabago, lamya lamya admin. I hope I am wrong. He should also pick the right people in his cabinet.

Hay naku, when will we ever learn? Well…

  109. parasabayan parasabayan

  110. Tongue,

For the meantime, politics of personalities muna uli tayo.

    That’s why I’m so dismaya.

    So frigging dismaya…

  111. PSB,

    Who’s sonny boy?

  112. parasabayan parasabayan

    Anna, Trillianes.

  113. Don’t get me wrong, as it stands, I may be voting for Noynoy after all (As if there is a choice). What I’m not comfy with is the attitude of the elitist few whose messianic complexes they want to impose on everybody because they have “decided” among themselves it’s good for all.

I think I read it in this blog but I’d like to reiterate it for emphasis. It goes somethin like this:

  115. PSB, si Roxas.

I thought many were thinking like me that a Roxas-Lacson was the dream team. Roxas has the brain and experience, Lacson will be there to ensure implementation of the plans and visions. Of the three “strong willed” wannabes, I don’t think Bayani and Binay are in Ping’s league yet. This is so peculiar to Asians that’s why those countries who are now progressive are those who experienced strongman rule. It must be in the genes.

Now what will we now expect from a Noynoy-Mar leadership which is a lame-lame combination?

  116. parasabayan parasabayan

Kakaasar noh?

PSB, ang habang tulugan uli niyan but worth the wait for sure.

  118. parasabayan parasabayan

Tongue, I thought so too. I just wanted a confirmation. I was dismayed when he just gave way to Noynoy, ganun ganun na lang. But maybe Mar has the two elements of a leader, kaya lang lumiit yung balls niya o simply nawala na! He gave in so easily!

But if Noynoy proves us wrong and he can really clean up our country, Mar may be the next president. Sonny can wait another term. Bata pa naman siya. Hopefully he will be more seasoned then. Sonny will be the President when my son and very young nephews will be in their 20s na. Baka sakali at that time we would have stopped the brain drain and our people will stay put and learn to love and serve the country like the good old times. That would be the day. Sana buhay pa tayo then!

I agree with Phil. . after surviving one calamity after another in the wake of Typhoon Gloria, the prospect of an honest and decent presidency a Noynoy candidacy has to offer is like manna from heaven. . . . . Some people call him a wimp and a weakling. . .maybe bcoz all these years, he had been all so quiet in the halls of congress and the senate, as if shouting themselves hoarse during interpellations and debates, is a trademark of outstanding lawmakers. . .others take him to task for not filing significant bills. . depends on our own take of what is significant or not. . . as pointed out, we do not lack for good laws, only good implementors. . .weakling? i dont think so. . .as someone who had served the PSG in the twilight of the Aquino presidency, i have observed the Aquino siblings up front. . save for Kris who could be bratty at times, Noynoy never gave any problems to his security detail. . walang yabang. .tahimik. . maasikaso sa mga tao. . no air of superiority whatsoever, so Cory. . .during the dec 89 coup, he was ambushed together with Korina S by rebel soldiers near Malacanang. . .he was wounded but like a man, he fought back by exchanging gunfire. . .that’s no wimp or weakling in my book. . .Most, if not all bloggers here, agree that he is decent and honest. . .To me, those are the two most important qualities of a president. . . .nakakarindi ng utak na ang lagi mo na lang naririnig ay “why is ur president like that? why is her family always involved in this and that anomaly?” I would cringe in shame each time. . . simple lang ang gusto ko. . .bring back national pride. . .bring back decency and honesty in government service first. . .lahat ng hinihingi nating economic recovery at social services susunod yan. . .filipinos are generally law-abiding. .make people believe and trust the government. . .i left the service bcoz i have lost faith in government. . . i have lost respect for the president. .deep inside me, i believe Noynoy will make a difference. . strange that i was able to say that word again after losing faith in this present government. . . At least now, i see a silver lining in the horizon, that glimmer of hope. . . . .i’m sorry i cant say the same thing of the other wannabes. . .

Ayan, the civil society has all the reasons to have an “orgasmic experience”?

Calling the ATTENTION of ALL peaceful and loving Masang Pilipino…NEVER iboboto ang Yellow Fever sapagka’t sila ang extension ng Arroyo regime.

I’ve always been pro-Lacson so, how about Aquino-Lacson? I’ll settle for that.

Thaimik at di kayang mag ingay.

  125. “Aquino vows to go after Marcos wealth”

Ano iyan? Parang pabouncing-bouncing na lang between these keningburimos?

Haaaaaaaaaaay!

  126. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Were Cory still alive, would Noynoy have run?

Why did it suddenly become imperative to run, after the Mother died? It is not about “ituloy ang laban”, but to harvest the sympathy votes.

Was this not the same situation, albeit manufactured, that “kailangang magkaisa para mapaalis si Erap”? What did it produce? So Noynoy is not the Glue. But wasn’t she the next best thing to piniritong galunggong (sliced bread sa Kano) when it was imperative that Erap be kicked out?

Ah but Noynoy is different. So was the Glue, in 2001. Deja vu as John Klemmer would wail on his tenor sax.

  127. parasabayan parasabayan

The civil society(some call them evil, I wonder why) want to exploit the Cory fever. Will they win in the countryside knowing that Noynoy did not care to vote for the Carp?

  128. luzviminda luzviminda

Al: “What is Noynoy going to do with his uncle Peping and Aunt Tingting who are still aligned with Gloria Arroyo?
And also Aunt Lupita and Tessie Oreta and uncle Paul.

  130. The diversity of opinions about the prospective Noynoy presidency is delightful, but there is one consensus about his character — he is a decent person. To me, decency means a clear conscience, a quality apparently missing in the Arroyo brood and some of the putative candidates for the presidency. It is my hope that the electorate, including Anna and Tongue, will finally decide in favor of decency in the 2010 contest.

  131. luzviminda luzviminda

They saw Noynoy as a good ‘scrificial lamb’! HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN! Yan ang isisigaw ng partido!

  132. I would not hope too much about this presidential ambition of Noynoy, who is definitely riding on his mother’s name and death.

I am not a big fan of Mrs. Aquino, who, I must admit though, tried her best to right the wrongs that she had committed before, after and during her reign that , contrary to publicity, did not actually free the Filipinos
especially from want, etc. She died in vain, however.

In fact, a lot many of the problems we see now originated from her administration that did not actually restore democracy but the same system and people who had enslaved Filipinos for decades even before and after Martial Law.

Worse was the deterioration of Filipino morality and dignity with the deployment for instance enmasse of the so-called “Japayuki” that flourished after Mrs. Aquino inked an agreement with Japan for a special quota of 40,000 entertainers annually to Japan.

In fact, a lot many concerned women’s groups in Japan were dismayed when Mrs. Aquino did not stop the deployment of those Japayukis that they had protested against for the negligence of the Marcos administration to curb the exploitation of these women being brought to Japan by illegal recruiters with tie-up with crime syndicates in Japan.

Marcos in fact did not OK such deployment. Cory did! She was supposed to send genuine entertainers not wannabe prostitutes, male and female, to Japan. Dumami tuloy ang puta at nawalan na ng dangal ang mga Pilipino, at dumami pa ang mga bastardo, who are becoming a big social problem here presently!!!

Another was the attempt to deprive Filipinos to benefit from patrimonies acquired even with the blood of those who sacrificed their lives for love of country with the sales of Philippine properties both in the Philippines and abroad.

One of those properties in fact that Cory Aquino and her cronies then tried to sell were the properties in Japan. I led the movement in fact to stop the sale of the Roppongi property as I did not want the Philippines to lose it the way the property in San Francisco was squandered by the cronies and relatives of Aquino hoodwinking Filipinos by saying that it was a sequestered Marcos property because it was acquired during Marcos’ reign.

The sales of the properties in Japan then were stopped not because Mrs. Aquino was convinced that those properties were not hers to sell but to keep for the Philippines and the Filipinos, but because the Japanese buyers had more
sense of propriety, and most of all, love of country. Naawa sila sa amin na nagprotesta especially when we emphasized that those properties were payment for the blood of Filipinos spilled in WWII. And no decent Japanese in fact has since attempted to buy the property.

Now, here comes Gloria the Crook. From day one she coveted the presidency from Estrada, she had planned on selling the patrimonies in Japan even against SC ruling even to shady characters just to get rid of them. Fortunately, the appointed guardian of those properties, the Japanese government, had questioned one or two supposed buyers of those patrimonies, and thus, the crooks were not able to close the deal, and consequently, the supposed buyers are now suing the Philippine government for breach of contract.

My group and I are, likewise, preparing to do the same, sue Gloria and her cohorts plus these buyers if need be. Our lawyers in fact are studying the possibility of filing the lawsuit in a Japanese court when in principle whatever deal the creep makes with the wannabe buyers should have been voided by the Philippine Supreme Court based on the SC ruling on patrimonies.

These actually are just a few of why I don’t actually believe the publicity about Mrs. Aquino being the mother of Philippine democracy-baka oligarchy pa—and her son becoming one president who will work really hard to make at last his country a great nation.

As a blogger here once said, mag-umpisa muna siyang ayusin ang agrarian problem sa hacienda nila, baka maniwala pa ako.

BTW, I came to know Balsy, the sister of Noynoy, in fact, when her name surfaced then as one of those involved in the sales of Philippine properties during the Aquino administration. She was the personal secretary of her mother then, so the mother could nnot be excused for not knowing about the shady deals in these sales especially the successful ones they did like the sale of the property in SFO.

Lawyer Leonard de Vera in fact revealed the involvement of Aquino’s relatives in sale of the Philippine property on Stockton St. in SFO.

I would rather wait for the right candidate, not just any candidate, to support. Puede naman akong magsuporta even if I cannot vote in the Philippines.

    Kawawang bansa!

  133. luzviminda luzviminda

    Neonate,

Noynoy may be decent but what about the people who will be running the country ‘behind his back’. Like the Kamaganak, Inc., nuong panahon ni Cory? Who by the way are in cahoots with Gloria up to now dahil nakaposisyon at may kapit.

  134. parasabayan parasabayan

Gusto natin ng matalino, nakakauha tayo ng Marcos at boobuwit, both corrupt. Gusto natin decent nakakuha tayo ng Cory. Nagpakasasa yung mga kamaganak inc ng panahon niya and there was nothing she could do. We keep voting an elite. None of these elite candidates really know yung hirap na pinagdaraanan ng 70% ng bansa.

A president need not be a senator or a congressman.

  135. luzvuminda,
Granted Noynoy is carrying some heavy baggage, mostly inherited. As some here commented,
“a guy whose greatest accomplishment so far is being the child of his parents”, and the millstone burden of a brat sister whose taste in paramours is terrible and whose logorrhea is unparalleled (posing a risk that sibling advise may escape the decency filter). That only proves he is human, just like us.
Granted too that the Kamaganak syndrome is a potent threat, but that would be true to ANY presidency, and the well entrenched hegemonies still are the present day warlords of their fiefs — the oligarches, political dynasties, the bureaucrat-business partners in corruption. It will take more than one presidential term to dismantle, but a determined honest man (remember Diogenes) can initiate the trend towards a decent society.

  136. parasabayan parasabayan

All the other contenders somehow made themselves visible and were involved in one project or the other. Noynoy was invisible all this time. Now he wants to be a president? Am I missing something in the translation?

  137. florry florry

The problem with our trapos is that they are exploiting the masa for their political ends. During erap’s term nasaan ang mga masa? Me masa ba sa inner circle who stole billions from the treasury?

I hope Noynoy remembers an excerpt of his father’s speech way back 1982 at Los Angeles. This is part 8 of the series from the same event as uploaded in YouTube. Ito ang platform of government ni Ninoy in case siya ang maupong presidente. Please take note sa 8:20 up:

People are saying that Erap had his chance but he blew it? Noynoy, your mother and the yellow elites were given a chance to recover the Marcos ill-gotten wealth for six long years with dictatorial power but they blew it. Your kamag anak inc. blew it too. You want a slow motion replay of another six years of blow by blow corruption?

It seems to me that Mar chose to withdraw his candidacy as President because of the pressure from the yellow elites and the yellow media. Even if there will be a convention within the Liberal party to choose who will be the standard bearer, Mar already knew that the evil yellow elites will dictate the winner of the convention and will not allow a fair selection process by the party delegates. Mar did the right thing of resigning right away.

It is only the yellow elites and the yellow media who are proclaiming that the people are clamoring for Noynoy. During the time of Erap, the yellow media demonized Erap and glorified that gloria. What the yellow media is doing right now, is a deception or an illusion that people is clamoring for Noynoy.

Liberal party is not a solid party per newspaper accounts.
If I were Mar, I will run as VP of Erap instead of VP of Noynoy. Mar’s chances of winning as VP of Erap is higher than run as VP of Noynoy. Not only that, if Erap gets disqualified by arroyo supreme court, Mar will get the support of Erap. Mar will be the next President of Pinas.

  142. PSB,

I’m not impressed. Wala sa kalingkingan ni Margaret Thatcher.

Kung sinabi mo pang No. 1 criminal or Public Enemy No. 1, maniniwala ako! 😛

  143. Bakit ba ninyo pinagpipilitan si Mar Roxas? Dahil bata niya si Korina? Yuck!

  144. parasabayan parasabayan

Xman, I like you idea. Why be with Noynoy when Mar can do better? Patok na patok yan. I do not really like Erap but with Mar around, things may be better. Mar should know by now that there will be no real governance if Noynoy wins. It will be the evil society dictating what they need to do.

    Kawawang bansa!

  146. totingmulto totingmulto

Erap- Mar is a good idea because if erap gets disqualified, Mar will be the next president.

What if erap is not disqualified? E di tuloy ligaya. Marami na namang Atong ang eeksena. There will be another Angara who will run the affairs of the government dahil si president ay incapable. We will be going back to one of the darkest chapters of our history!

    Oust GLORIA. No to TRAPOS!

  147. chi chi

Mar will never leave Noynoy even if he rejects the VP offer.

  148. andres andres

Still a big NO for Noynoy and the Liberal Party. This group is being pushed by the self-righteous and arrogant “Evil Society” like Black and White.

Kalimutan at may bago kayong kandidato? Di pwede!

The civil society(some call them evil, I wonder why) want to exploit the Cory fever. Will they win in the countryside knowing that Noynoy did not care to vote for the Carp?

Kasusulat lang ng isang relative ng mother ko sa Ilocos that the Solid North votes will never be given to Noynoy lalo na yung sinasabi ni Noynoy that he will pursue looking for the Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth.

  150. Sabi siguro noong tiya niyang si Lupita, ke bumagsak si Gloria or what, malakas pa rin silang magkakapatid. No wonder di na umasenso ang Pilipinas. Back to the future pa ang labas!

Di ba nanay niya iyong nag-against sa will ng Senate to abrogate the US bases before? I doubt!

  153. So, does Noynoy mean to say first thing he would do if elected is free Senator Trillanes? I hope he does, but not like what Gloria did to Erap, who was granted presidential pardon, meaning criminal na na-pardon!

Trillanes should be freed because he is NOT guilty, and be allowed to do his job as Senator as freely as he should under the law that he has taken an oath to abide by.

This my friends and I welcome, but not enough however for us to pledge support to the Noynoy Aquino bandwagon.

  154. Ano iyan? Parang pabouncing-bouncing na lang between these keningburimos?

di nila sinasabi na ang lahat ng pilipino ay dugong aso ang sinasabi nila na ang mga taga northern NCR,Rizal,Bulacan and Nueva Ecija used to be Kapampangans and also the tribes allied with Kapampangans since pre-hispanic times are closely related to Kapampangans by blood, the place where the soldiers are detained now used to be a part of Pampanga and the aetas there speak a language similar to kapampangan as well.

Alam ba niyo kung bakit nagtratraydor ang mga taga-macabebe it was because of the treason the people from southern luzon and lakandula’s treason that caused Tarik Soliman,a former leader of Macabebe to be defeated the same thing happened with Emilio Aguinaldo who betrayed Andres Bonifacio who is a native of Masantol.

  156. All the other contenders somehow made themselves visible and were involved in one project or the other. Noynoy was invisible all this time. Now he wants to be a president? Am I missing something in the translation?

When all the other declared or perceived presidential wannabes spoke in front of the camera about anything, we dismissed them as merely grandstanding. Why are we now criticizing Noynoy for being ‘invisible’ in the past?

Sabi ni Erap, “Let us let the people decide, not the elites and the bourgeois … All of them are from the rich set.”

EDSA Dos was a mistake because it resulted in the ouster of a duly elected president? I agree that EDSA Dos was a mistake, but for a different set of reasons. First, it was a mistake to call it a successful People Power revolution because it was Mike Arroyo and his cabals in the military who ousted Erap- not the people. EDSA Dos is nothing but a coup d’etat disguised as People Power. Second, it produced a cure worse than the disease itself.

  159. totingmulto totingmulto

When Cory apologized to erap, she was not actually clearing him of his sins to the Filipino people. There was nothing in her statements averring that erap was innocent and a good president. There was only regret on her part having supported the ouster of erap because the successor was even worse.

Everytime I see her speak out (and I don’t watch tv…mas marami akong nagagawa sa buhay ko that way) dyosme! maski sa burol ng nanay niya, walang delicadesa.

Noynoy will have to do more to show that he is his own man.

Ang point man nila ay si Gregory Domingo — managing director of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Board of Investments.

With the public and private sectors focused on this goal, the BPO sector grew into a $6.1-billion-yearly industry with close to 400,000 employees today—and aiming for one million in just a few years.

Indeed the BPO sector is now widely credited as one of the industries that helped the country weather the worst global economic crisis since the Great Depression.

grizzy, what the loarca chronicle says is that those tagalogs in central luzon are fake tagalogs who are originally kapampangan.

    I agree on this.

  177. Must say the discussion thread here is very enlightening. I’m actually impressed with the arguments presented by everyone.

    Adebrux,I agree..

  178. Is Shalani Soledad, the special lady in the life of Aquino? She’s pretty.

  179. parasabayan parasabayan

Anna, in fairness, I agree, Shalani is pretty. She will be an asset to Noynoy. I just hope that Kris will not make “taray” to her and drive her away.

  180. balweg balweg

Let’s support Noynoy, an ordinary man who will not cheat, lie or steal!

Diyan ka nagkakamali Kgg. The Equilizer? The Yellow Fever are the remnant of EDSA DOS na ngayon e siyang nagpapahirap sa ating bayan.

Lalong lumaki ang problema…Marcos loyalists + Masang Pilipino against Yellow Fever and co.?

  182. balweg balweg

Just close your eyes to his evil ways dahil marami siyang accomplishments? Ganoon na lang?

    Oust Gloria. No to Trapos!

  184. xman xman

  185. totingmulto totingmulto

Kaibigan, hindi lahat ng kasalanan ni erap ay nilitis sa sandiganbayan but definitely his acts were inappropriate para sa isang lider. I don’t want to sound libelous dahil magalit si Ellen. Please try to read old newspapers during erap’s term to referesh your memory. Kahit hindi PDI dahil galit kayo dyan.

  186. totingmulto,

    what about Gloria’s ‘kasalanans’?

  187. Chi,

atty sax, I don’t like Erap to withdraw, hindi exciting ang eleksyon kung wala sya.

Hah! I think you are right. Erap, as a citizen, should be allowed to challenge the wannabes. He’s actually giving them the chance to present their position with aplomb.

  188. totingmulto totingmulto

    AdeBrux,

I just did point to those who push erap to run again that erap is history. He was given the chance pero pinalpak nya.
Erap’s greed for power is only weakening the opposition at sigurado na ang panalo ng manok ni gloria- si noli kabayad o si gibo.

  189. Totungmulto,

    Erap’s greed for power

I’m not sure it’s “greed for power”… it’s perhaps more about his need to prove himself, i.e., that he’s not the corrupt person that he’s been accused of. A normal politician’s reaction (politician Gloria the ganid included).

Now, whether this political move of his is a good thing or a bad thing is another issue altogether.
