Want to help? More helping hands needed

The way the whole nation responded to help victims of typhoon “Ondoy” is awesome.

The TV networks, ABS-CBN and GMA-7 used their power and influence for something noble. So many groups are taking it upon themselves to undertake their own independent relief operations.

ABS-CBN’s Ted Failon did an admirable thing focusing on raising funds for more portalets for evacuation sites. Ted, in his radio program at DZMM, said he saw the unhealthy situation in evacuation centers where there were only one portalet for over a thousand evacuues.

This morning, Ted, though donations was able to acquire 15 portalets to be rented for at least P10,000 a month including services.

We got this note from Habitat for Humanity:

Habitat for Humanity Philippines will be conducting a mini-soup kitchen at two Pasig Evacuation Centers where our homepartners are. We need volunteers from 6am-2pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 2,3 and 4) to distribute arroz caldo. Please contact 8973069 or 09178260881″

Some of you have been asking me the past days where to give your donations because you want to make sure that they get to the intended beneficiaries.

If you notice, below the heading of this blog is a plug for donations for victims of typhoon Ondoy that would be coursed through Ayala Foundation.

Those who are sending donations from abroad, it would be helpful to know Gloria Arroyo’s Sept. 29, 2009 directive to avoid hassles in the Customs:

Keep up the good work, mga friends sa pag-volunter.

  2. This just proves the ages-old reputation of Pinoys as being resilient and our ability to rise back to old form whatever disasters that may occur.

To me, this is also a problem since we are still reactionaries at this very late stage in our civilized lives. We must start being good planners and good anticipators of such events so that we can continue marching towards progress and leave these minor hiccups as fast as we can to continue moving forward.

It is sad that to this day, disasters such as Ondoy still take us back to square one each and every time such events occur.

  4. chi chi

Tongue, agree 1000% to your post #2.

Thanks for the list of dropoffs, Ellen.

  5. Isn’t Walden Bello, Liza Maza and Gabriela going to organize demonstrations against the US troops now in Metro-Manila doing medical missions and flood-relief programs?

  6. chi chi

  9. Tongue, re # 3, I checked it. Okay naman sa akin.

  11. From El:

Came across a link to your post on your website re:

Gloria’s directive to allow duty-free incoming donations, but requiring them to be assigned to DSWD.

This entry from the Phil. Embassy in Singapore seems to indicate that:

    http://www.philippine-embassy.org.sg/index.cfm?GPID=53

“3. WHO CAN RECEIVE DONATIONS? The following
agencies/entities/institutions in the Philippines may receive
donations on a duty-free basis: Non-profit, welfare, religious, and
charitable organizations which are registered with the Securities and
Exchange Commission and duly licensed/accredited by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), as provided for in Section 105

    (1) of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines;”

However, Gloria’s directive restricts this to *only* DSWD:

    http://www.ellentordesillas.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/gma-sept-29-directive.pdf

So the question is – aling directive ang umiiral? The one on the
Singapore embassy seems to be existing policy, and not something
written in response to the current crisis. Does Gloria’s directive
    override this?

  12. El, I will ask the DFA for clarification.

Also Secretary Teodoro. He was discussing about that directive of GMA in his Facebook wall.

  13. Disaster Preparedness?

    Or, Preparedness Disaster?

  14. chi chi

He is full of f_cking air!!! From what i know, yung mga sa Red Cross ayaw na sa kanya, kaya lang pinipilit niya sarili niya.

Mukha kang bulldog! Ungas ka Gordon!

  16. chi chi

Who needs Teodoro now? He failed miserably in the first critical hours that his ‘expertise’ was needed badly by the people.

He missed the timing Ondoy gave him to show that he’s up to the job.

  17. chi chi

As to Gordon, he already missed the boat long time ago.

  18. I really hate Gibo with passion,I was once decieved by Gordon I thought good siya na politician yun pala bad siya.

  19. to tongueTwisted: Iyong water-purifier filters.

  20. vonjovi2 vonjovi2
