The decision of Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero to bolt from the Nationalist People’s Coalition, the party that nurtured his political career the past 11 years, has introduced a new moral element in the campaign.

It showed a young candidate, without the logistics – from family treasure chest or from business earnings or from government resources – to subsidize a national campaign which election experts say could cost P3 billion, daring to go direct to the people to bring his message of reforms in governance.

He gave three reasons in his speech but what interested me was the second:”Sinumang tatakbo o magiging Pangulo ng bansa, hindi pwedeng magawa ang mga dapat niyang gawin ng naka-kadena ang aking mga kamay at paa, naka-piring ang aking mga mata at may busal ang aking bibig. At lalong di dapat mag desisyon base sa dinidikta ng interes ng iisang grupo, partido o tao lamang. Kung gusto nating umunlad at guminhawa hindi na pwede ang dating gawi. Kung hindi… papaano niya halimbawa, isusulong ang pagpapanagot sa tiwali; pork barrel; ambassador; contractualization; bodyguard; oil deregulation law; Pagcor.

It shocked many who have misjudged him as a young tradpol. Here are some insights from people who are watching the political scenes closely:

Ding Gagelonia in his online blog “Midfield”: “ I think among the factors that Escudero rebelled against was the pre-emptive announcement by Rep. Mark Cojuangco, son of Nationalist People’s Coalition Chair Emeritus Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco that it was to be a Chiz Escudero-Loren Legarda Tandem for the NPC in the 2010 elections.

“Such announcement came in direct violation of the established principle that it the supposed party standard bearer who’s given the free choice to pick his running mate, with even Legarda herself staging her own solo vice presidential bid launch.

“Methinks what is unfolding is a noble assertion that for positive change to come, it is people politics that must reign supreme over party politics.

“The objective is for the pre-eminence of decisions grounded on commitment to what is in the interest of the people rather than a select few’s narrow agenda of self preservation.”

Raissa Robles, correspondent of Hongkong”s South China Morning Post, blogged the information she got from two reliable sources that Escudero turned down One billion pesos offered to him in exchange for withdrawing from the presidential race.

Raissa also said “The sources both said the NPC founder had forged an agreement to pair off NPC official, Senator Loren Legarda, with Senator Manuel Villar, chair of the Nacionalista Party who is running for president.

“Doesn’t this smack of an arranged marriage? They mentioned Senator Eduardo Angara as the marriage broker.

“Anyway, Ms. Loren, who professes to be single right now, is the happy bride.

Wonder how much her dowry will cost Cojuangco who is still trying to wangle total control of San Miguel Corporation.”

I got also the info about the P1 billion offer not only to withdraw from the presidential race but to be the candidate’s vice president.

But it looks like Chiz is pushing on with his presidential bid on his own terms. It will be an uphill battle, no doubt.

Tongue- twisted posted in my blog: “Chiz’ next worry is machinery. The country’s 7,110 islands is a logistics nightmare for any national candidate that party machinery (and the usual expense that goes with it) comes in handy for that purpose. We saw the FPJ for President Movement people wearing their Tshirts at the presscon. But Chiz is not FPJ, Susan Roces wasn’t even in the presscon. I’m not even sure an FPJPM machinery still exists.

“His camp has long been toying with the idea of capturing the youth vote via volunteerism, but with the scarce demographics no one is sure if the more economical methods of digital-based campaigning will be sufficient to nail the top plum. Here, a slight miscalculation spells danger.

“The recent announcement of the Samahang Magdalo gave Chiz’ a much needed boost, it’s young officers are very much in the same age group as Chiz’ and looks like they share the same ideals. Magdalo’s “Para sa Pagbabago” tagline and Escudero’s “Bagong Pagbabago” both suggest a departure from traditional systems not just mere change of faces for the sake of change.

“While Chiz spoke, we saw in the wall behind him the huge Magdalo logo. I hope the youth will be inspired by the coalition. I hope Chiz and Magdalo can transform them from mere apathetic spectators they are now into proactive stakeholders because for change to happen, it must start with the young. We can’t teach old dogs new tricks.

“This is getting exciting.”

    Escudero’s introduction of himself as “Hindi ako heredero, hindi ako haciendero, at lalong hindi ako bilyonaryo” was an indictment not so much a description of his competition but more of the system. Saying that he, a product of the public school system, son of teachers, whose veterinarian father made good likewise in government and politics but has kept his integrity intact, a lawyer who once taught in his alma mater, the University of the Philippines, and has since become a well-known congressman and senator, was just an “ordinary” guy, without the cachet of “pedigree.” And so he is asking the people if the system would allow those born with neither pedigree nor wealth, legal or illegal, to get a chance at becoming its president.

    Tribune sources, however said, that Escudero may end up not running for higher office but couldn’t say so in front of his youth supporters.

    “He may declare and run for the presidency, but with the collapse of his plans for high office, it is likely that Chiz will opt out sometime in January,” the sources said. “Chiz already had funding problems while he was the bet of the NPC. What more today, when he is party-less?,” the sources added.

    Ngayon nya lang naisip yan 7 months bago mag eleksyon na kumalas sya sa NPC para maging independent sya?

    Kung gusto talagang maging independent ni Chiz Talk ay noon pa nya ginawa yan, at least three years before ay pinaghandaan nya na ang pagtakbo bilang independent. Katulad ng ginawa ng dating senado na si Gaudencio Antonino:

    “My father, the late Senator Gaudencio Antonino ran as independent and won, but he prepared for almost three years going all over the Philippines setting up his machinery. Escudero has no more time to do that,” Antonino said. His father was elected senator in 1961.

    The reason why Chiz Talk decided to resign is not because of his noble cause to be independent in decision making as these lying chiz was/is saying together with the lying pro reporters of chiz and his fans (spinning it to death the purported noble shit reasoning that they are talking about). It is simply because of funding.

  7. This is an ongoing experiment that will test the capability of the idealistic youth to get involved versus the few organized elite versus the huge uninvolved masa.

    The Marcos-Aquino-Ramos-Estrada-Arroyo clique had always been pitting the poor versus the elite. Here comes the long forgotten stakeholder – the youth. It is a formidable force no doubt. The real THIRD FORCE. The untapped niche in the electoral market.

    Will Chiz and his handlers be able to pull it off?

  8. The idea that independents can’t win is a fallacy.

    Mitra’s LDP was so big it had resources flowing out of its ears. Two independents, despite forming their own “disposable”, one-time-use parties, blasted Mitra to the smithereens and it could have gone either way for Ramos or Santiago had Ronnie Puno and Roque Bello not “influenced” the results. At the time, Lakas ng Tao and Santiago’s (put party name here) were token parties and the two camps were unmistakably independent.

    Estrada’s Partido ng Masang Pilipino, too, was a token party, created only to provide a home base for turncoats who tried to cash in on the Erap bandwagon. It could not have stood its ground against the Lakas juggernaut, yes it didn’t, but it’s top candidate won. Lakas on the other hand, practically swept the local posts.

    The Senators. Parties are mere vehicles of convenience for senatorial candidates. In the last few elections, more independents, political butterflies included, have landed senate seats with much ease.

    The party machinery only plays a critical role as far as congressmen and local officials are concerned, but not for the presidential, vice and senatorial bets.

    It is a myth long debunked.

    Okay sana ang ginawa ni Chiz na pagkalas sa partido para walang kadena (daw) kung nuon pa niya ginawa ito, hindi ngayong malapit na ang election.I wont be fooled by his rhetorics. He is just all talk. I cannot forget what he and Allan Cayetano did just to become senators. Pareho silang pasiklab kontra kay Gloria, pero nuong mga nanalo na hindi mo na alam kung mga taga opposition sila talaga. Chiz just did it again – ngawa ng ngawa, wala namang ginawa.

    Funding is really a big factor in any election. How the candidate will solve it is a test of character. He can sell his soul to the devil just to have the money or he can do something unorthodox and wage a campaign not based on money.

    It may succeed, it may not. What is important is you keep your integrity intact.

    Exactly. That’s why they couldn’t figure out where the disconnect is. Because the disconnect lies in their brains. Escudero is innovative, out of the box, totally groundbreaking the other camps are confused and thrown off.

    This is the kind of politics that interests me. Politics that uses brains.

    Those trapos who still follow the old practice of guns+goons+gold have just been left behind at the station. Chiz’ train is on track.

    That’s the point, pera lang naman ang katapat kahit walang “machinery”. If money starts flowing from out of nowhere to fund Chiz’ campaign, automatic na yang machinery na yan. Tongue mentioned Ramos and Erap who won as “independents”. Obviously, these two gentlemen has the logistics to run a nationwide campaign, dami kaya nag contribute nuon sa kanila. Si tabako, the rumors then ay namilit o namwersa sa isang taipan para maglabas ng pera, but that’s just a rumor daw.
    I can’t say for sure if Chiz has a secret backer to bankroll his presidential campaign. Baka nga naman meron kaya ang lakas ng loob niyang kumalas sa NPC. Billion ang pianguusapan dito at di mamera lamang. Let’s just wait and see.

    I personally wish to see a candidate win not because of the 4 G’s (guns-goons-gold-garci), but to see a candidate win in a “unorthodox or non-traditional” way as Ms. Ellen has mentioned. Boy, if that happens…. that would be THE day. I do sincerely hope that Chiz can pull this one off, not because he is my candidate (as I’ve not yet decided who to vote for). I want him or anyone else to win through an honest, sincere and transparent campaign.

    How they wish! Campaigns in the Philippines have always been waged with oodles of money involved or have u forgotten how Ping Lacson faltered mightily by going independent in the last prexy elections? Sure, he might have the youth as his backbone, but how can he reach out to them if he has no funds? Calling the middle class who support Noynoy as elite wont help either. With a lot of savings now,no thanks to the pork barrel, Chiz is what? Poor? I have had enough of this elite stereotyping. Even if u have all the volunteers in the Pinas u will still need logistics to mobilize them to reach out to far-flung areas all over the archipelago where Chiz to them is ‘palaman’ sa tinapay. The reality will jolt u if u dont know it yet. We are a poor country. Much as voters would want to symphatize with u, they would not want to part with their hard earned money to do errands for their favorite candidates. We are light years away compared to the US in terms of how campaigns are being run. And dont compare Trillanes’ magical run with the presidential derby. With so many wannabes out there, we will have a plurality of votes winner na naman.

    during his interview who are his senators. Susan is for Chiz…dapat siguro mag give way na lang si Erap since Binay is also close to the FPJ movement. Binay or Chiz okay lang sa akin kung sino sa kanila ang tumakbo basta ma iba naman.

    This is a calculated risk by Chiz. If indeed he has a sterling leadership, he would know how to navigate his candidacy without NPC. He would have consulted and gotten the nod of his “secret” non-political mega funders. The thing is, he will still have “big funders”. Same same din yan. What will these big funders expect? They may not be political now but once Chiz wins, they will be ala Cojuangco etc.

    Mas bilib ako if he has the backing of the Magdalos, the youth organizations and the small voters who may not have the dough but who are willing to use their own time and resources to go from island to island. This is very doable but it will require years to re-group. Dito natin masusubukan ang kakayahan ni Chiz. If he can pull this through without the backing of any “big” funder, saludo ako. He deserves to be our President!

    Yung Mindanao ang pagtuunan nyo ng pansin. May tulog lahat ang taga oposisyon pag di sila nag ingat. There is where u will need a lot of poll watchers to protect your votes. U can’t do this gratis et amore. How do u expect an independent candidate to cover the vast area out there where most people have never heard of what the internet and television look like? Pag di ka kilala at di ka nakikita, paano ka iboboto? I’m not kidding. Im sure many of u here had been there also and must have seen the abject poverty of many of our Muslim brethren down there. The only leader they know is si barangay kapitan at si mayor. Pagadating ng eleksyon, hahakutin na ni kapitan ang mga yan at dalhin sa presinto with the instruction kung sino ang isusulat sa balota. Have u ever wondered why the Ampatuans and his like are so damn confident that whoever sits in Malacanang always pays homage to them? They have their constituents by the balls. Now, how do we solve a problem like this? And fast! By going solo? Are u kidding me?

    I firmly believed that if Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero becomes the president, he will provide positive impact to our society. I just hope everyone sees this. He deserve all our support this coming election if he opted to run. In my opinion, I do not see positive changes for our country once the NP-NPC wins the election under Villar-Legarda leadership for obvious reasons (i.e. same situation like before or even worst).
    If Chiz, in the end, decided not to run. I just hope Aquino-Roxas tandem of the LP have the same principle as Chiz’s and adopt his vision for the positive changes in our country we all deserve.

    Chiz obviously is following the footsteps of Obama. Still untested, Obama knew how to navigate his presidency but he knew he could not do things on his own. He needed a party and lots of support from “big” firms and individuals, including left leaning ones. He also launched a wide ranging campaign for funds and every one who wanted to support him gave their hard earned money even their credit card pledges. But Obama prepared for his candidacy for at least a good three years! This is even in the US where communications are done in seconds via internet as every household has one. In the Philippines where one has to go virtually from town to town and barangay to barangay, it will probably take even longer. This is why I believe that Chiz should do what he is doing but not in this election. Do this in the next election of 2016. He will only be 46 then. Take Sonny Trillianes as his vice. I will campaign for them with my own money! This upcoming election is too soon to mount a nationwide campaign with no funds and party to back him up. Granting he wins, he will not have governors, mayors, tongressmen and senatongs backing him. He will be an ineffective president. Walang makikinig sa kanya. It is absolutely okay to revolutionize our traditional system of fielding in candidates but we have to plan and execute this on a precise manner. Hindi yung bigla bigla. Sayang si Chiz if he will push his luck in this election. It is like going to the battle field without a gear and ammunition. The Magdalos and the Tanay Boys fought their causes without a back-up. Look where they are now? They are all locked up. So Chiz, you are such a promising leader, pagaralan mo muna and lahat ng hakbang mo. It is too premature to run on your own.     It’s still along way to go. We haven’t seen anything yet. Marami pang kababalaghan ang mangyayari. We will see a lot of horse-trading, sommersaulting, putative candidates reinventing themselves over and over again to solicit sympathy, etc. The greatest circus in Filipinlandia is coming to town! Meanwhile, typhoons left and right keep battering us! Buti na lang maraming pulitikong nagpapatawa. Laking pasalamat ni Putot! Di na siya napapansin.     sana lang ginawa ni Chiz ang ginawa niya nung Wednesday noon pa nang maisipan niyang gusto niyang maging presidente. Kung sana man lang maski nung pagpasok ng 2009 kumalas na siya sa NPC, at sinabi niyang ako ay ako, siguro yung Cory magic nuong Agosto a hindi mabubuhay. Pero dahil ngayon lang siya gumawa ng isang makabagbag damdaming pahayag, hindi maiiwasang maraming mag-isip na pera-pera lang iyan! SAYANG.

  38. This is totally unexpected. Whats happening is Escudero just turned the tables around, betting on the people to rise above traditional politics, we’ve been clamoring for this forever and now its right in front of us! Personally I’m impressed with this development, there’s still time to study and make an informed decision but somehow I feel that finally the Philippines is on the right track.
    If this is genuine, will the people cast their vote for themselves, or are we still going to be swayed by billions of campaign funds and patronage politics?

  40. Now, that he is out of a traditional political party, logistics/money is a big problem. That’s the reality.

    But as far as I know, money was not the primary issue in Chiz’ leaving NPC. It’s more on the kind of presidency he was going to present the people that was giving him problems considering thaat his support would come from NPC with all the vested interests of the party leaders primarily Danding Cojuangco.

    But the straw that broke the camel’s back was the deal that the party was brokering with NPC while another party stalwart making a deal with Noynoy.

    That’s when he decided he didn’t that kind of politics.

    Kayo, in your life, how do you make decisions? When confronted with problematic situations, do you right away walk out of it?

    Isn’t it normal to give everything, everyone a chance.Until you feel, you have to make a drastic, even if painful, decision.

    What kind of decision you will make depends on your character. That Chiz decided to give up the financial security of his ambition and took the more difficult, risky path is admirable.

    Win or lose, he has gained something. He saved his soul.

    Which cannot be said of many of the candidates now, presidential or senatorial.

    Chiz Escudero was second in my wish list of decent Presidential hopefuls, second only to Noynoy because of the odds in winning (not qualifications). If he now hopes that the Youth vote can offset the loss of funding support, his idealism might be a huge disappointment. The Comelec is starting to be frustrated in the enthusiasm of new registrants (mostly youth voters) and could indicate the sway of the so-called youth-vote.

  43. There is always the saying that politics is all about interest and not permanent bedmate, politics is about wealth and power; how to make money at the expense of the masses.

    George Washington,first US president warned Americans about the dangers of putting any political party above the general interests of the country. It would do well for US Filipinos today to relearn this basic lesson. Our loyalty must first and foremost be to the fundamental principles upon which our nation was built, not to the finite interests of political partisanship.

    It is a fatal mistake to assume that any politicians is the harbinger of patriotism. Theodore Roosevelt said, “Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country.”

    My loyalty to a party or politician must be measured by his loyalty to the fundamental principles on which America was founded. When I remain loyal to a politician or party after they demonstrate an unwillingness to be faithful to those immutable principles I am guilty of disloyalty to my country.

    Why are they so notoriously gigil and atat chasing these robbers who were only inspired by the walang puknat at walang sawang pangungurakot sa kaban ng bayan ng ating mga respected and honorable government officals?

    They don’t have to spend a single bullet if they want to arrest most notorious criminals and isalaksak sa kalaboso dahil sila ay nandoon lamang sa kongreso, sa senado, sa Malakanyang at ‘yung profiles na iba ay nasa Camp Aguinaldo at Camp Crame.     Chiz can now forget yesterday and breathe a sigh of relief. He has unloaded what could be a baggage he has long wanted to get rid of. He can now start his quest with a clean slate, together with his family, friends, supporters and well-wishers. It’s now time for him and his supporters to build and plant the seed of hope and change for a better Philippines politically and economically. It will not be an easy job ahead, but win or loss, he can hold his head high for standing by his principles and in what he believes in.

Ang tunay na lider ay may sariling paninindigan at pag iisip hindi yung nadidiktahan o nagpapadala sa udyok ng iilan.

    Ang dami po ng nagrereklamo sa atin sa pork barrel ng congressman at senator..nanindigan po dyan si Sen. Lacson pero pinalampas natin, eto na naman po may isang lider na handang labanan at baguhin ang sistema sa katauhan ni Sen. Chiz palalampasin na naman ba natin ang pagkakataon. Wala po tayong karapatan na magreklamo dahil tayo din po ang kumukunsinti sa sistema ng gobyerno.

    Halos di po ata lumilipas ang buwan na hindi tumataas ang presyo ng petrolyo, kaalinsabay na din ang pagtaas ng mga basic needs natin. Ano po ba ang magagawa ng gobyerno kung hindi kayang iregulate ang presyo ng langis dahil sa Oil deregulation law. Isa po yan sa mga adhikain ni Sen. Chiz na hindi natin nadidinig sa iba, palalampasin na naman b natin ang pagkakataon?

    The Filipino People cannot afford another 6 years of misgovernance, massive corruption and kamag anak incorporation (not directly to Noynoy but to all government officials), wag na po sana natin palampasin pa ang isa pang pagkakataon, the Philippines needs drastic change in our current government system.

  48. The way the presidentiables are posturing, it will only take Gibo 20% of the votes to win, he will not be a majority president, nevertheless he will still be president.
    If Noynoy can rake in 20-23%; Erap 20%; Chiz 15%; Villar 23%…roughly speaking. Villar’s millions (billion) can still buy a lot of votes, Noynoy’s emotional vote could still be substantial…bottomline, the opposition vote will be divided. Will a miracle happen along the way? Will some of these wannabes step down and alow just one person to represent the opposition?

    Obama was honed to become the President from the very beginning. He was trained at the Council of Foreign Relations basically for that purpose. CFR is controlled by Rockefeller.

    Both Republican and Democrat in the US are own by Corporatocracy/Vatican. And so are the political parties in the Philippines.

    Chiz wants to depart from this tradition. But he can’t do that alone. We all have to work for it.

This is an advantage for him and Mar Roxas, and as Sun Tzu said in one of his many writings; “why stand in the way of the enemies who are defeating themselves”. If Napoleon and General Norman Schwarzkopf of the Gulf War learned from Sun Tzu’s military writings and principles, why can’t Noynoy.

    If we truly believed in him then let’s help him . All we need to do is spread the word. Five minutes of our time using the same medium were using now.     In my view, Francis Chiz Escudero had stated his position clearly in line with what we all hope for all these years. Let’s take our chances with him and be a part of the CHANGE we so deserve.

    My opinion, the concept of party loyalties itself, can compromise a presidency may be true. One good example is “GMA Impeachment”. Right in front of our faces, most within party line and alliances opted to protect her from impeachment instead of doing the right thing for the country and the people. In spite off numerous documented evidences against her, most in congress within party lines and alliances voted to support her in exchange with untold benefits, compromising the integrity of the presidency. Key government post from the executive, the military, and the judiciary where given to party and military loyalist for protection, instead of professional civil servants and/or industry experts, who knows how to run it effectively, compromising the basic services. Resulting to even more losses for us in form of the “Corruption” and back track us several years from “Progress” we so deserve.

    Reading Francis Chiz Escudero, in my opinion, sees this as a road block to progress and he is correct. There are a lot of public servants from all sectors including our congress, judiciary and the military, who also knows this too and just waiting for a leader to guide and represent them.
    So there’s HOPE and call to ACTION is now…Let’s think about it seriously and VOTE intelligently…

    One of things that makes me go for Noynoy is the absence of a real candidate that makes sense. I mean, personally Noynoy is a safe bet. Pero lately mukhang tataya na rin ako kay Chiz kung sakaling tumakbo sya pagkapresidente dahil sa tatlong dahilan:
    1. Kumalas sya kay danding
    2. Sumuporta sa kanya ang Samahang Magdalo
    3. Ang pag-atado sa sitwasyon nung Oragun na si Tounge-Twisted (and florry).
