The 8.8 magnitude quake struck at 0634 GMT about 115km (70 miles) north-east of the city of Concepcion and 325km south-west of the capital, Santiago.

President Michelle Bachelet declared a “state of catastrophe” in affected areas and appealed for calm.

It is not possible to predict the time and magnitude of an earthquake, but certain places on the Earth know they are always at risk from big tremors. Chile is one of those places.

People will no doubt reflect on the scale of this event and compare it with the recent devastation in Haiti which has claimed an estimated 230,000 lives.

Saturday’s quake was almost 1,000 times more powerful than the one to hit Port-au-Prince in Haiti. But size is not in itself an indicator of the likely number of deaths.

One major factor which will limit the number of deaths in Chile will be its greater level of preparedness.

Both the Chilean authorities and the Chilean people are generally well versed in how to cope in such an emergency.

  1. IF the three quakes that hit China, Japan and Haiti were attributed to HAARP, then what else could have caused this one?

Chile definitely has better infrastructure compared to Haiti thus the reported lesser casualties and damages… considering that Chile’s quake is 1000 times stronger than Haiti’s

Don’t worry about the Philippines. The gloria and her cabinet had already laid a contingency plan in case earthquakes of same magnitude or stronger hit the country – fly to another country for their own safety bringing along their loot.

Ms Bonnefoy, a journalist who lives in Santiago, Chile said that even some of Chile’s infrastructure are/were not up to standards to withstand a lesser earthquake than this one.

Stop the Car, your car if you feel there is an earthquake. Just ask a Californian or a Japanese.
