The much-respected Maria A. Ressa, head of ABS-CBN News & Current Affairs, invokes “confidentiality of sources” in rejecting the challenge of the Nacionalista Party to reveal the names of their alleged “two sources from the Nacionalista Party ” who gave them the fake psychiatric analysis of Liberal Party Sen. Benigno Aquino III by a Jesuit priest.
“While it’s tempting to take the Nacionalista Party’s challenge, it violates a sacred rule of journalism,” Ressa said.
I don’t agree with Maria.
Journalism is basically truth telling. A journalist’s job is to tell the public the truth.
The late Salvador P. Lopez, distinguished journalist and statesman, had a more illuminating description of a journalist’s job. He said, “Basically, the journalist is required to inform the people – and to inform them correctly and consistently and, as is often demanded, courageously with the end in view of enabling the people to properly understand what goes on and impelling them to act on situations and problems more than as mere individuals but as a nation, a people in their behalf.”
In doing his job, the journalist is protected by the law.
Republic Act 53 , known as the Sotto law (authored by the late Sen. Vicente Sotto, the great grandfather of former senator Vicente “Tito” Sotto, who is a candidate this election) provides that “The publisher, editor or duly accredited reporter of any newspaper, magazine or periodical of general circulation cannot be compelled to reveal the source of any news-report or information appearing in said publication which was related in confidence to such publisher, editor or reporter, unless the court or a House or committee of Congress finds that such revelation is demanded by the interest of the State.”
The underlying principle of the Sotto law is to protect the source and the journalist in pursuit of truth. It was never meant to protect falsehood and deceit.
The first story of ABS-CBN said that they had verified the document to be fake. The question is, why did they still use it?
There is also the issue of why are they refusing to reveal the two persons who gave them the fake documents when they identified the sources as from Nacionalista Party in their story. Needless to say, the attribution to the NP of a deceitful act has a negative effect and becomes a political issue in this campaign season.
The NP has denied the story and dared ABS-CBN to identify the person . They said they would not hesitate to sanction those persons if indeed they were members of the NP.
Philippine Graphic’s Inday Varona said the invocation of confidentiality by ABS-CBN is “awkward” since they already mentioned “NP.” “You can’t invoke it halfway,” she said.
Businessworld’s Vergel Santos, who launched his book on Chino Roces yesterday, said, “The case is simple enough: a report determined to be fake does not deserve one look; its source on the other hand deserves to be exposed. Keeping confidentialities applies only to proper sources.
“Also, exposure serves as an only proper admission of shortcoming on the media organization careless enough to buy the fake feed,” he said.

Dumura sa Noynoy at LP…..
Noynoy said the psychiatric analysis is fake. That’s most expected. The priest also said so. That’s also expected; he is a supporter and presumed to be biased so he lacks credibility. Now who will determine if it’s fake or genuine?
It’s only Noynoy who can prove once and for all. Do a psychiatric test.
In the case of where the report came from, ABS CBN can not invoke the confidentiality of sources. The interest of state is above everything else.
I’m reminded of Oprah and James Frey, author of “A Million Little Pieces.”
Frey’s book was marketed as autobiography. Non-fiction.
His narration of how he got out of the dark abyss that inhabited was stirring and remarkable. Ophrah admired him so much.
Then it was exposed that his story was not exactly true. It was embellished. It was fiction.
Feeling duped, Oprah invited him back to her show and tore him to pieces.
This just made going to the psychiatrist for health issues a source of shame and ridicule. If its true. so what? Everybody has to get some help at one time, this doesn’t make one insane. Its our actions that define us, Villar already showed who he really is and what he is capable of doing (as plain as hello garci) and how he can with all his money put together the unholiest of alliances – of communists, putschists, dictators blood, political prostitutes, and brenda (and she’s foaming in the mouth admittedly)…get back to the real, documented issues, face the music, don’t change the subject…

Maria Ressa DID NOT do her job professionally. Being the head of the news department of ABS-CBN, she should have examined and verified first the veracity and authenticity of the documents presented to her/them before making it public. Especially that the issue is very sensitive and would be controversial. Dyan magaling ang ABS-CBN eh, sa pagse-sensationalize ng kanilang mga istorya. Kaya ako hindi ‘kapamilya’ eh.

The most common remark here is “if ABS-CBN knew it was fake, whey did they still report it and called it fake?”
Here’s my take on it.
Maybe ABS-CBN foresaw that this report was going to hit all media and the internet. That’s big news. They couldn’t be left out of it. But then they verified the report and found it fake. Then they made a report that it was fake.
No matter what, the whole media media industry would have reported on it anyway and later on report it was fake. It just so happened that ABS-CBN beat them to it on both counts.
I don’t see why news and public affairs organizations should not expose fakes. Whether it is a fake document, a fake transaction, a faked citizenship, faked war medals..etc.
But before one can call it a fake document, one must first report on what the document contained.

Why I don’t believe the psychiatric report:
1. The contents have been denied by Ateneo and Fr. Caluag. I don’t think Ateneo and Fr. Caluag would cover up the said report to favor Noynoy because what is at stake here is the fate of our country.
2. This kind of dirty trick has been used before against Miriam in 1992 polls. The only difference between Miriam and NOynoy is that Miriam has been accused of having brain damage and Noynoy for depression. Brain damage and depression are two different things. Miriam, upon hearing the report then, gone berserk, while Noynoy displayed coolness.
3. If Noynoy indeed has psychological problem, he would have distanced himself from the media more often. The more a person with psych defect expose himself to the public, the higher the tendencies the public will see how he behaves on various issues. Why I won’t bite NP’s claim that it was LP who gave the report to ABS-CBN:
1. A day or two days before the said fake psychological report was given to ABS, Alan Peter Cayetano and some of NP’s senatoriables have been calling Noy’s party as Noy’s TOPAK, apparently setting the stage before the report was circulated to the public.
2. If LP was the one who leaked the report to ABS-CBN, how come the same psych report have been circulated to various email addresses starting April 9, or a day after it was reported at ABS-CBN? Of course, it is not LP who will circulate the fake psych report to various email addresses (I know because I received one from a sender I don’t know).
3. LP, nor Noynoy, would not be stupid of starting this brouhaha as a strategy because it would definitely destroy his presidential bid.

i have to react to this showdown good vs evil. maybe it is better good vs lesser good. most of the realities in the world cannot be separated by good and evil.indeed nobody is totally evil nor totally good.just like black and white.this is specially true in politics with very few exceptions.i think whoever wins will not have so much impact on the lives of ordinary pinoys.only the politisation of the majority can change pinas.

The government filed a motion to dismiss at the Court of Appeals after having won in the RTC?
The government was acting as a trustee for the beneficiaries. The rights of the beneficiaries had already vested upon the lapse of time, so the trustee could no longer bargain that away for another right (stock options). If at all, any modification of the decision by way of a settlement needed the ratification of the beneficiaries.
Puwede nang mag-motion for execution diyan, because the withdrawal at the Court of Appeals made the RTC decision final and executory.
Now which lawyer would want to do that, and incur the ire of Babalu Cojuangco?

I agree na dapat ilabas ng ABS-CBN yung sinasabi nilang two sources nila ng fake psych report ni Noynoy.
But pwede nga naman nilang gamitin ang Sotto Law, ang sabi sa report ito ay galing sa 2 member ng Nationalista Party pero nagwaive na ang Nationalista Party to divulge the sources of the fake report.But are these 2 sources representing the Nationalista Party as a whole party or baka naman hindi kaya ayaw sabihin ng ABS yung sources nila unless yung dalawa mismo ang magsasabi sa ABS na ok lang na sabihin na sila nga ang sources. Hindi kaya dapat may internal investigation din ang Nationalista sa kanilang partymates kung sa kanilang miyembro nga galing ang nasabing fake report.
Sir saxnviolins pwede po kaya ang ganung defense ng ABS kaya ayaw nila sabihin yung sources nila kung sakali mang ganun ang pangyayari.
ABS-CBN has always been suspected as being biased for Noynoy. Now, with the report, biased for whom na sila? Hmmm.

I still find it so perplexing that NP would release a black prop that is “obviously” fake. You don’t fake a document and make it look so obviously fake, WTF! Villar with all his money and no-quarters-left attitude, the Tondo boy of old would hire fucking incompetents to manage his propaganda machine.
On the other hand, as saxnviolins say, who wouldn’t get depressed after breaking up with his girlfriend huh. You breakup with your loved one and still you look so happy and okay, aba e, you either do not love her or you’re not normal. But here in the Philippines, you go see a psychiatrist they think you are “baliw”, a stigma that will forever stick.

It is true that media should have access to news, so that government shenanigans may be made known to the people whose taxes finance the government. But was the report “news”? Did the source get it from the government? Does a forger deserve the same protection as a “news source”?
Ganoon din yung kaila Dick Cheney. Did they leak news to inform the people? Or did they leak it to destroy Valerie Plame? Violation ng US law ang mag-out ng US spy. With valid reason I think, because you don’t want your spy killed in the foreign land he is assigned to.
Note the lame excuse of Maria Ressa. They learned of the fakery after talking to Father Caluag and Noynoy. Really? Hindi ba obvious sa text? Nagbasa ba kayo? O nakiliti sa scoop? Whatever happened to “responsible journalism”?
ABS CBN is simply slanted towards the Noy-Mar tandem and is using its huge media juggernaut to present their own version of what is true and right.

Ang ABS-CBN ay sobra ang biased, imagine holy week ang mga palabas ay tungkol ay Ninoy, Cory at Noynoy. Paano malalabanan ang media kung ang pinalalabas ay bayani si Ninoy, Santo si Cory at malinis si Noynoy? Parang mga Santo diba, holy week sila ang mapapanood.
Noynoy’s heroic father senator Ninoy was assassinated for his love of country, Noynoy’s mother Pres Cory served honestly and also died for the Phil, Noynoy was consistently on top of his class during his school days, Noynoy is definitely the best candidate for president who will honestly serve God and country, and even if there is a failure of election, Noynoy will surely win the presidency because that is Noynoy’s fate and the Will Of Heaven !
