Aquino Says Philippine Poll Fraud May Trigger Turmoil

By Francisco Alcuaz Jr. and Haslinda Amin

Following his mother's footsteps
Following his mother's footsteps
April 27 (Bloomberg) — Philippine presidential frontrunner Benigno Aquino said only fraud can stop him winning next month’s election and any such attempt would trigger unrest comparable with the protests that swept his mother to power 24 years ago.

The 50-year-old son of former president Corazon Aquino, who has led opinion surveys since entering the race last year, criticized how a switch to electronic voting machines is being implemented and said a declaration that he is the loser of the May 10 poll would bring supporters on to the streets.

“If we have a correct counting of the votes, I think we will be very victorious,” said Aquino, whose mother toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos amid protests that followed a rigged election in 1986. If “the people’s will is frustrated,” demonstrations could make this month’s protests in Thailand seem “mild” by comparison, he said in an interview in Manila yesterday.

Aquino, known as “Noynoy,” claims his closest rival, property tycoon and Senator Manuel Villar, is secretly backed by outgoing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and has accused both of corruption. A contested election result might disrupt efforts to tackle a record budget deficit, reduce Asia’s third-highest unemployment rate and increase foreign investment.

“Markets would react negatively to any scenario that puts in question the credibility of the elections,” said Paul Joseph Garcia, chief investment officer at ING Investment Management Ltd. in Manila. ‘There’s going to be selling pressure.”

Coup Attempts

The benchmark four-year bond fell the most in almost three weeks, pushing the yield 4.5 basis points higher to 5.90 percent, a six-week high, according to Amstel Financial Services. The peso fell 0.5 percent, the most in a week, to 44.417 against the U.S. dollar.

The Philippine Stock Exchange Index has risen 8.4 percent this year, lagging behind a 16 percent jump in Indonesia’s Jakarta Composite Index and outpacing a 3.7 percent advance for the SET Index in Thailand, where as many as 26 people were killed in anti-government protests this month.

Aquino entered the race following the death of his mother from cancer in August, and was propelled to the top of the polls by an outpouring of nostalgia for the former president. He widened his lead over Villar to 15 percentage points in a survey conducted from April 18 to 20 by the Manila Standard. The survey had a margin of error of 2 percentage points, the newspaper reported yesterday.

Vested Interests

Opponents say Aquino has achieved little in 12 years as a legislator. Villar, who rose from poverty to build a fortune estimated at $530 million by Forbes magazine, says he is “up against someone who has no experience, has not demonstrated any managerial ability, and has not led anything.”

Aquino said his lack of legislative achievements reflect his refusal to compromise with vested interests. He cited business experience selling Nike Inc. products and said that helping his mother fend off coup attempts by negotiating with wavering soldiers is evidence of his leadership skills.

“I don’t claim sole credit for having withstood the coups,” he said in the living room of his home, decorated with water colors painted by his mother. “But I think I played an important part. They chose our side.”

Aquino has lived in the same house in Quezon City all his life except for three years spent in Boston. Their stay ended when his father, known as “Ninoy,” returned to Manila in 1983 and was assassinated on arrival, triggering the anti-Marcos protests that catapulted his wife to the presidency. Today, Manila’s international airport is named after Ninoy Aquino and his face appears on Philippine banknotes.

Budget Deficits

Aquino said he intends to increase tax collection to 15 percent of gross domestic product from 13 percent “practically instantly” by targeting tax evaders, raising funds to plough into job creation, education and health care. He also said he may adopt an “open skies” policy to boost tourism.

The government has run an annual budget surplus only four times in the past 24 years, constraining its ability to fight poverty in a nation where one in four people live on less than $1.25 a day. The budget deficit was a record 298.5 billion pesos ($6.75 billion) last year, and is projected to stay close to that this year. The unemployment rate stands at 7.3 percent.

Aquino also said he plans to raise judges’ salaries and improve implementation of a law that would reward and punish tax and customs officials based on whether they met targets, part of his strategy to stamp out graft.

Meanwhile, he is seeking to extend his lead in the polls by emphasizing his family’s incorruptible image and painting his main rival as corrupt. Villar, 60, was ousted as Senate leader in 2008 amid allegations he diverted a road to benefit one of his property projects. He has denied any impropriety.

Aquino has also joined opposition politicians who allege that President Arroyo rigged her election in 2004, in part with the help of the country’s election commission. Arroyo, who’s barred from standing for re-election, has spent three years of her six-year term fighting attempts to impeach her on vote- rigging and corruption allegations.

RE: Is Aquino preparing for repeat of EDSA One?

Ngayon pa lang they are proposing a parallel manual count in the counting. Pa’no pag may discrepancy, sasabihin nila may daya, and then another EDSA in the making. I don’t think peple will buy that crap anymore.

In today’s editorial section of the Daily Tribune, the alleged denial of Jaime Bulatao, SJ, of Ateneno appears spurios or not made by Fr. Bulatao himself. If the second psycho report turns out to be authentic, Noynoy will surely have a problem since he does not totally disclose his psychological records to the public.

Not surprisingly, the Liberal Party (LP) camp quickly dismissed the psychiatric report on its bet, Noynoy Aquino, harking back to the first psycho report that was clearly a fake one, and also saying that all this is black propaganda.

But with the surfacing of this new psychiatric report, noted to have been signed by a genuine psychiatrist and psychologist, Fr. Jaime Bulatao, SJ., of the Ateneo, something does smell fishy from the camp of Aquino, in coordination with its biggest media supporter, ABS-CBN.

Controversy followed the airing of the clearly fake psycho evaluation of Noynoy, in that it was clearly a fake report, yet ABS-CBN quickly aired it, then claimed the fake report came from two sources from the Nacionalista Party (NP) camp.

To this day, the network has refused to identify the sources of this fake report, even when the NP leaders gave their clearance to have ABS-CBN identify the NP sources.

But think about it: Why would the NP sources give out a clearly fake psycho report on Noynoy for airing when they must have known that this would easily be debunked? After all, the alleged psychiatrist, Fr. Tito Caluag, was certainly no psychiatrist or even a psychologist and he is in the ABS-CBN combine board, which would make it so easy for the TV channel to have this report debunked and why air it, knowing it was fake?

Everything about the first psycho report screamed fake. So why would the NP sources leak this out to ABS-CBN, especially when it is known that this network is so yellow and airs only positive news on Noynoy and never any negative news — unless of course, as in the case of the fake psycho report, establishing the fakery of the report would be bad news for the NP camp, since it was also clearly claimed by the network that this was leaked by two NP sources, which would then also give Noynoy and his yellows the opportunity to kill the non-stop talk of his having suffered from autism, as well as his being bi-polar and many more mental health problems.

It wouldn’t even surprise anyone if the LP itself hatched up that fake psychological evaluation of Noynoy and had it aired, to crush whatever was forthcoming by way of medical and psychological reports on Noynoy.

It is no secret that talks have been making the rounds for sometime of a medical-psychiatric report on Noynoy Aquino, from his student days to his stay in Boston which would prove damaging to the LP standard bearer.

It is certain that the LPs and Noynoy himself knew and heard of this talk, and in essence, moved to preempt whatever would be bared later — if it would be bared at all. The LP is certainly not beneath such moves.

Given that thought, what comes to mind is that there must therefore be a grain of truth in talks of Noynoy having sought psychiatric help sometime in his life, whether at the Ateneo, or in Boston or elsewhere.

This could also be the reason Noynoy, even when challenged to take a psychological test, refused to do so, when he could easily disprove all talk of his mental disability if he underwent such a test, to end all talk on this issue.

What surprises, however, is that all the LP does is to deny — never once did Noynoy and his LP disprove any of the allegations leveled against him, whether it is the security agency that he had established when his mother was president, which shows just how tainted he is by corruption, or the Hacienda Luisita issue, as well as the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway project that even had the Cojuangco-Aquino make a pile of money from the taxpayers, while getting the bulk of it and giving the workers a pittance of that pile. And he dares talk about leveling the playing field and do justice to every man.

Neither did Noynoy come clean on the private interchange that the clan never paid for, but was given to them as a gift by the Arroyo government.

Noynoy and his camp always claim that his rival, Manny Villar, never disproves the charges, and merely denies them.

But so does Noynoy. He denies everything, even when solid proof is presented, as in the security agency and the hacienda issues.

And he wants to be president and pledges to weed out corruption?”

NO WAY!

“Aquino said his lack of legislative achievements reflect his refusal to compromise with vested interests”

Nagpapatawa siguro siya to show that there is also a funny side of him.

What makes him think that crafting and passing a bill would compromise with vested interests?

What’s the compromise if for instance he files and manages to have it enacted into law a bill giving free education and medical care for the indigents? What’s the compromise if he authors a bill that provides safety nets for senior citizens? What’s he compromising if he manages to pass into law a bill that provides economic security for the widows and education to orphans of soldiers who died in action defending the state?

His only remarkable accomplishments in congress: He voted against the airing of Hello Garci tapes, thus acted as a lapdog and defender of Gloria. He also lobbied for the construction of SCTEX for the exclusive use of the Hacienda Luisita, all expenses paid for by the government of Gloria.

His “palusot” is bullshit. It’s an excuse by idiots and stupid believing that it’s alright to mislead the people. It’s an excuse to give reason for incompetence and mediocre performance. It’s an excuse for those who know nothing about leadership and governance

The sad thing about it is people are just so naïve, so easy to take for a ride and so blind to not see what is real and fake.

That’s the sad reality on how the Filipino electorate use their democratic rights in chosing their leaders. They based on names, personality and not on quality.

aquino is already assuming that he will win the election based on data gathered from less than 10000 voters.what use is the election then, just a formality? i cannot see any humility in his pronouncements even before he is actually voted.it seems to me that now he is taking credit that the military did not take over in his mother’s watch over pinas.i am starting to believe that there is some truth in the psychiatric reports.for a guy whose candidacy is based on decency, it ought to be easy to come out of this garbage quite clean.

  9. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

For the past decade or so, I think the people have given this administration all the chances via legal and constitutional avenues to defend herself. But always, she has bought and/or threatened Congress, the military, the Comelec and the Supreme Court to thwart these.

So here again is the last chance being given her. The elections. To do good by the people by not tinkering with it.

7 out of every 10 Filipinos are fed up, nay.. hate her.. and her ilk. The expectations of change, of finally getting rid of her is very high. The people are feeling it, smelling it, tasting it. It seems to be the last chance at gaining back a life..for them and their children.

It is up to those thwarters of change to tempt the whirlwind.

it is logical to conclude that Noynoy and Mar will win, as president and VP respectively in next months election, SWS and Pulse Asia are both very credible and highly respected survey firms, and they conduct surveys in a scientific, fair, and impartial manner.
Noynoy consistently lead in all surveys from the start to finish, and is even widening its lead by double digits against its nearest rival in the latest survey.
If gma and her candidates villaroyo and giba think they could cheat the people again, like what they did in 2004, they better think a thousand times again……..

    Pareng Tedanz:

Yan ang gusto ko sa yo. . . di ka nagpapadala sa sulsol. . .hehe

It was not out of hubris that Aquino said, “If we have a correct counting of the votes, I think we will be very victorious”. He was interviewed and asked about the PCOS and the possibility of cheating using these. If he had said this without being asked, hell, it would have been arrogant of him! Lurker is right.

Tama ka Pareng Tedanz. Di dapat pagkatiwalaan sina Villaroyo at Gibo. Do not underestimate the capacity of Goyang to conjure all the magic tricks out of her evil hbag para di lang manalo si Aquino o Erap dahil alam nyang sa kalaboso ang bagsak nya.

  22. Is Aquino preparing for repeat of EDSA One?

Ellen, based on the interview, he’s admitted that he is preparing for one.

Some say that his pronouncement was to serve as a warning to those who would be tempted to cheat.

I say the whole thing smacks of arrogance…

    Plain hubris!

    Sure…walang problema!

  25. henry90 henry90

    Anna:

I respect where you’re coming from but I don’t see the point why he is being portrayed as arrogant. I can see very clearly the context of why he said that. The authors of this article clearly premised their interview with him as the presidential frontrunner. Oh, I can only imagine how the blabbermouth Gordon would have answered this if he was the one interviewed. He would have promised them brimstone and fire raining down from the heavens! 🙂

How about Erap? He would not have answered differently. Remember EDSA 3? His adoring masa would never allow their ‘leading candidate’ to be cheated and his ‘redemption’ compromised.

Lalo naman si Villar! If he would have been asked as the ‘frontrunner’, I can only speculate what would have been his reaction. Maybe it would have been like this, ” Sabi ng nanay ko, mahirap talaga kami at kailanman ay di kami nandaya at nagsinungaling, mamatay pa uli yung kapatid ko”. Or something to that effect. . .

    🙂

  26. chi chi

  27. Henry,

To be perfectly honest, I don’t care much about what they (his rivals) might say if they were asked the same question because my focus here and now is on Aquino and what he said. You must admit that there’s a certain amount of hubris in how he said it, eg., based on a direct quote from him.

That said, I can very well imagine that if there’s at all any hint of dishonesty and cheating in the counting, there’s bound to be trouble but to announce it the way he did just about strikes the wrong chord. If he had followed it up with something along the lines of what Chi said “Kung tama ang bilangan, ayos lang…”, he wouldn’t be accused of arrogance or hubris.

  28. chi chi

Look what that brought us, Gloria and Mike almost forever.

From a clean election we should begin (again).

  29. If “the people’s will is frustrated,” demonstrations could make this month’s protests in Thailand seem “mild” by comparison, — Aquino

Am I right to believe the inference, “the people’s will”, concerns his candidacy alone?

Perhaps, he should issue a statement clarifying what he said… I could very well imagine that he wasn’t very clear during the interview, hence the poor journalist had a tough time piecing his thoughts together.

  30. henry90 henry90

    Anna:

Again, I understand. I might not be right on this as only the transcript of the interview would have shown but he answered that way because EDSA 1 was and will always be identified with Cory AQUINO, his mom. My take is, he was asked, based on the premise that he is the frontrunner and the possibility of cheating and if an EDSA type of uprising, like what his mother did, is possible in happening again. I bet the interviewer asked it this way.

    🙂

  31. But Henry, to be fair, I like this:

Aquino said he intends to increase tax collection to 15 percent of gross domestic product from 13 percent “practically instantly” by targeting tax evaders, raising funds to plough into job creation, education and health care. He also said he may adopt an “open skies” policy to boost tourism.

Aquino also said he plans to raise judges’ salaries and improve implementation of a law that would reward and punish tax and customs officials based on whether they met targets, part of his strategy to stamp out graft

I believe Aquino is not getting balanced advice from several of his Advisers…it is better for now to study very carefully all the “moves” and even the pronouncements he is making as there is nothing as a sure thing until it is a Sure thing…just to remind the famous Yogi Berra’s “it ain’t over ’til it is Over”

  36. My standard for selecting is simple: I will vote for the candidate who can prove that he or she was, is and will be diametrically opposed to Gloria. If there’s none, I will cast a blank ballot.

  37. And I have a less than a week to complete my comparisson matrix… 🙂

    Anna,
Noynoy mentioned that in the event that there is massive and clear cut cheating, then he could be in the streets together with the people. He never said that… : If He Loses He Would Call For EDSA People Power.
Should there be another Garci-type E-Cheating then, it is up to the people, whether they accept this with apathy or voice out their demand, better yet, march their demand for the real winner to be proclaimed.
ERAP winning over Noynoy, in my honest opinion would not be through cheating. It would be a fair win.
However, if Villar or Gibo wins, people would question the outcome, then the people would have to prove that Villar or Gibo won via cheating, then off to the streets.

To reiterate, Noynoy is calling for People Power should it be clear that cheating has occured. Yeah, I would be there.

  52. aquino is already assuming that he will win the election based on data gathered from less than 10000 voters.what use is the election then, just a formality? — Norpil

Based on what Aquino has said, and there’s no reason to believe that the journalists who quoted him got it all wrong, it seems Aquino believes that this election is mere formality; that the surveys cannot go wrong so that he’s got it in the bag already; that whether we all like it or not, he is headed for Malacanang and that if for some odd reason, he doesn’t win, he will stage people power and become president.

Unless Aquino himself debunks what the journalists wrote and declares that it ain’t so, we can only assume that to him surveys = election.

After more of mud-slinging and nothing about any concrete plans to raise the Philippines from the abyss of unprecedented failures, as un-predictable as it has always been, whoever comes out as the president (and vice president)-elect will be met by both applause and boos alike. As usual, the winners would have been the cheaters and losers would have been the cheated. And at oath-taking, the lucky cheat would swear to uphold and defend the constitution at all costs and against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. FINE !!!

The evil that was Gloria is all around us. The biggest challenge to the next leader is to erase the stigma that was GMA and start picking up the pieces to make the Philippines stand proud once again among the league of nations.

The scariest part is when the newly-seated chief executive starts FUCKING around with the constitution to tailor-suit their cravings for power and money just like Gloria did. Then we will have Gloria all over us again under the guise of another fucking name and another fucking face.

Totoo ang surveys? Bakit di sila ang ininterview ng Bloomberg? O naging cover story ng Time magazine? Galing at Talino daw? Bakit ayaw nila? O si Pareng Erap kaya? How his not-so-brillant brain works and his arrogance is clearly written all over.

Noynoy’s claim that only cheating can make him lose the election is unbelievable if not downright insane. These words can only come from a person whose mind is not stable and has problem with mental health. What makes him so cocky to claim victory even when the election is yet to come? Somebody should tell him that he must show a little bit of sanity, a bit of respect, a bit of restraint and a bit of down-to-earth reality that this thing is not over until it’s over.

Threatening a people power if he loses the election doesn’t register with the people anymore. It’s already passé in this country. If he intends to copy what’s going on in Thailand he is in for a rude awakening. Nobody not Noynoy can mobilize the “masa”people which are being used as the frontliners and cannon fodders to move for him and his elite cronies. Maybe if has the millions to pay for them. EDSAs did not result in the alleviation of the people and reformation of successive governments. It only made the them more corrupt and worst.

But if Noynoy says so, by all means, go ahead, let’s see if he can make “uto-uto” of the people to rally and force them to put him in power as their “shotgun” president, like his mother.

  74. saxnviolins saxnviolins

True EDSA to me is like first love. No matter how ardently you chase it, the giddiness, the limerence of first love can never be repeated, even if the new interest is prettier, smarter, etc.

Similarly, EDSA was the first and only spontaneous uprising. True, there are claims about the CIA, El Tabako, etc. But the people (myself included) who responded to Butz Aquino’s “Tulungan natin si Minister Enrile” took to the streets not because of foreign meddling or machinations. You cannot manufacture spontaneity. You may mask a fabricated uprising, but it will be as telltale as your pate, despite the defensive combing from the side.

Spontaneity comes from the heart, and produces widespread acceptance. The people accepted Cory, rich and poor alike; and the world applauded (remember Jane Fonda flashing the Laban sign at the Oscars?) But with EDSA Dos, there was no widespread acceptance. The Economist magazine was critical of the extra-constitutional move, the people did not accept the Glue, and there was the more vociferous EDSA tres.

Sorry Noynoy and bosom buddies. You cannot repeat the phenomenon. That is solely your mother’s to claim (with help from the memory of your father). You may very well win. You may even prove to be better than your mom. But my first love was the hope that your mother inspired and the pride of world recognition. I listened with pride as former Chancellor Willy Brandt of West Germany said that “your people gave the world hope” in a dinner in the house of Jovy Salonga.

You are a poor substitute for that first love Noynoy. If you win, your presidency will be the equivalent of the spouse one learns to live with and grow old with.

I hope you will not mess with my memories of the heady days of 86. Instead of your EDSA Cuatro, I would rather have cuatro cantos and relive the glory of taking to the streets for your mom and the memory of your Dad. You are not worth taking to the streets for. If only for that, I hope you win and get it over with goddamn it.

I will still vote for Erap though.

All this talk about the evils and the unfairness of surveys. Well, imagine a world without surveys. Imagine a world where surveys are forbidden. Imagine a Philippine election without surveys.

Hell, anybody in power (of the Gloria-like tendencies) could do anything they want with the election results and the people wouldn’t know any better. The people will just accept the results without question. And the Gloria-like creatures reign forever.

  85. orson orson

Noynoy’s mental issue may be a clicher.

In today’s issue of People’s Tonight, Guido Delgado, the one who presented the second psycho report, doubted the denial of Fr. Bulatao saying that the priest is already retired from teaching, is already 90 years old, and lives in seclusion, and is senile. so Mr. Delgado challenged LP and Ateneo who floated the denial to present Fr. Bulatao himself to publicly declare the denial. If the denial is a fake. Then it means the psycho report is not at all fake and should be taken seriously. At this point, di pa ito isssue. But maybe next week, it will become an issue since Noynoy never said that he did not underwent a psychiatric treatment in the past but merely treat such allegation as smear campaign.

  86. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

School report cards are a form of surveys. It tells the school administration periodically how well the teachers are teaching and how well the students are learning. It tells the parents how well their children are doing.

Now imagine enrolling your kid in a world where periodic report cards are banned kept secret until after the end of the school year.

  87. Oblak Oblak

I agree with Mr. Cruz. If i may add the position taken by Mr. De Quiroz in his column today:

“We have been reduced to trusting the survey-takers rather than the Comelec. We have been reduced to buying the results of the elections only by comparing them to the results of the surveys. We have been reduced to believing not that surveys can be wrong about elections but that elections can be wrong about surveys.

In these jagged times, what else have we got?”

Personally, I believe in surveys with sound methodology and conducted by reputable/credible survey firms. If my candidate leads in the survey, I am happy. If not, I just feel sad but I do not attempt to discredit the result.

Surveys are a science. It is based on statistics which is a science in itself. Done correctly, it can forecast results accurately.

Anga aming pameeting from 49 barangays sa aming bayan ang pinakatahimik, organize, at isa sa pinakamaraming dumalo from our constituents at walang hakot dito at walang perang involves.

Since many of Villar’s mudslinging issues against Noynoy didn’t fly ( in fact, they boomeranged), his camp has asked that mudslinging be stopped already. Can’t stand the smell of their own smuck when it flies back into their faces.

So now they go back to the “competence and experience” issue in the last two minutes of play..hoping this is the best issue against Noynoy. Villar has been bragging that he is the best candidate because is more competent.. has more experience than any candidate.

As Cory once said to Marcos who called her a mere housewife..Yes, I have no competence, no experience in stealing and cheating and lying…or something to that effect.

Villar has practiced his swindling and influence-peddling craft well. He is prepared. Very well prepared… to bring the country down on its already bended knees.

  106. Aquino’s pronouncement was not in any way clothed with finesse. Again, at the very least, if his aim was to go through the democratic exercise that’s called election be (or his alalays) wouldn’t have been rabble rousing. Why did he not address his warning direct to Gloria and her operators (who would do everything and anything to get one of her two dogs elected)?

Why did he threaten a nation with “people’s power” if or when he is not declared the winner which to my mind is downright irresponsible?

In other words, no matter how you turn Aquino’s (and his alalays’) declaration around, it was meant to browbeat people, i.e.,

“Look here fellas, I am the winnah; there’s no question that I am the winnah… Surveys say it. Casting your ballots is mere formality; if at the end of the day, I’m not declared the winner, I shall turn this nation upside down until I’m sworn in as president! Remember, I am the winnah!”

He forgotten this presidential contest doesn’t only involve him?

He probably is starting to believe that because the surveys are now in his favour, May 10, in fact is a political exercise involving a referendum involving him and him alone whereby people are simply asked to tick the box “Yes!” or “No”, i.e., “Do you approve of Aquino being president or not: Choose yes or no!” (Much like the French referendum that got Charles de Gaulle to remain in power.) Not an election at all!

I think he is starting to take leave of his his senses…

    Good Lord!

  107. And to think that I’ve been up in arms defending him against a friend of mine from the press (attacked her is more like it) who’s just written that he was in fact nuts.

  110. Noynoy’s comment is not bad really, it shows he has guts after all. He doesn’t have to conform to our expectations just a decent person and start the ball rolling, its best not to make much of it. There are far worst issues really, why react as if he killed 57 people?

  111. Jug because there’s more to it than what was reported.

  112. And that is not about balls… that is what we call, where I sit, de la cupidité!

  113. He should have threatened Gloria but not the people with turning the nation upside down if he is not installed president.

  114. His friends who are, as we speak, gathering people to form warm bodies with the help of selected military officials if he is not declared winner is just a bit too much.

This is not about clean elections anymore — it’s about a referendum on his and his person alone.

Threat to turn the nation upside down if not installed president!

To him and his handlers because surveys are in his favour, the May 10 political exercise has become a simple referendum matter – about him and him only, whereby people will be asked to tick a “Yes” or “No” box, i.e., “Do you accept Aquino …as your president?” and no longer the presidential contest pitting 9 candidates against each other.

Yeah, they better ask Noynoy or his advisers for “the more to it” stuff, iniiwan yata sila sa pansitan. 🙂

Anna, Noynoy and advisers fear the Magdalo more than anybody else, the reason why they don’t want the young officers working with them. And now, they fear the thought that Noynoy would not beccome president so they are sounding the horns aggressively with unfounded basis. So many fears eh!

The reason why I quoted Erap (#97) is to compare it with what Noynoy said in the interview.

it seems to me that some may have misinterpreted the value of statistics/surveys.a great mathematician/statistician once said that statistical analysis can be correct in general but not necessarily in particular.statistics specially if based on human beings is always changing for otherwise they have to survey only once and thats it.this is why no survey can replace election, some people may even change their minds after election day but that is too late. i read also somewhere here that report cards are surveys and wonder how things will be in a world without report cards for children.i think it is good for children in the elementary schools not to have grades or report cards.i see it here in norway that there is a value in making children think that they are all alike and that nobody is stupid nor some are clever. grading pupils at a very early age can make a lot of them feel losers.

Sometimes I could count myself lucky..one time someone asked me If I decided to have a dual citizen by again taking an oath of allegiance and I said I would refuse to again swear allegiance to my country where I did not renounce and will never renounce, and if that means forfeiting the privilege to vote so be it…it is kind of hard for now to choose among the Candidates, but if have to…my choice for President is Teodoro. and that is all about it.

  126. Lurker Lurker

Of course it’s silly to say that it’s all over and Noynoy is the winner. It’s equally silly to put too much emphasis on surveys. We just have to vote for whoever we think, feel and HOPE to be the best candidates.

  127. kapatid kapatid

Again, let me reiterate: Noynoy never said he would call for People Power or EDSA or any street action. What he said was:
“Kung” mapanuyan na mayroon Dayaan sa halalan, he would call on the people to march through EDSA. And as I have posted previously, if cheating is done, as usual with impunity, I would join the march.
I do not think at all that Noynoy is thinking that this election is like a referendum of some sort.

I recommend posters re-read the story above, especially paragraph 3. Note of the “IF” word.

Ganito na lang kaya ang scenario :

Failure of Election na lang on national level. Gloria wins in the 2nd district, No Senate President, No Senate quorum. Whoa! Jackpot tayo… Gloria is Prime Minister.

I don’t see anything here saying “if I’m not elected president, I will launch another EDSA of sorts…

  129. Unfortunately, the “masa” some people here are always talking about are unemployed, underemployed, squatters, and non taxpayers, who get easily riled up by agitators who talk about the good old days, remind them of their misery and then pointing blame on the rich. This insane habit of inciting class wars has to stop really. There are no class A, B, C, D, E, to Z, just motivated and apathetic (ones who don’t have any drive to make their lives better and behave as though the world owes them a living), ones whos misery opportunists take advantage of easily…come to think of it, both Erap and Villar need to get themselves checked out as evidently they suffer from a serious case of delusions of poverty…and so do the “makamasa” kuno but ca afford to blog…

  130. kapatid,

Or Noynoy, Erap, and Villar obliterate each other…and Gibo wins! now Gloria will be jumping for joy and give her best lapdog a pat on the head…

  131. From Dick Orense:

I believe this is too presumptuous of Mr. Aquino and indeed preposterous!

How can he claim that? Does he think those surveys tell all the opinions and thinking of the majority Filipino people?

I am not for anyone but I am for a presidential candidate who has good achievements in the past, can impose discipline and good moral character among its citizenry and who can turn our country into a city like Hong Kong, Singapore, UAE and Malaysia.

Does Mr. Aquino think he is the sure winner in May 2010 election just because of the surveys? The real survey is the result of the May 2010 election and not those surveys made by their friends, supporters and sponsors.

Surveys do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the majority but only the minority and most of the time is self-serving, meaning for a vested interest.

Please, please and I say again please do not even insinuate that another Edsa 1,would happen. If there would be any, I would fight for a true Philippine democratic system of government but not the kind of the result of Edsa 1 and 2.

They are fake and has not achieve anything concrete and momentous results in our Philippine society. Look at us, where are we now? What have those senators and congressmen done so far for the last decade? Have we achieved anything compared to the achievements of our asean neighbors?

Let’s not be hyprocrite. Let’s tell all to the filipino people that we are going bananas. Our economy is simply sagging. Why are we still going abroad for work? Why has our government, especially those senators and congressmen asking for our votes now, lagged behind in development? Where have all those millions of pork barrels gone? To their switzerland, uk, usa accounts? To flashy and expensive cars and suvs? look at our surroundings? Full of trash wherever you go? Full of beggars sleeping in every nook of the city? Look around your neighborhood ? Do we see all streets are properly lighted? Ttidy and clean streets?

My family went to Pangasinan and going back to QC, we were dismayed to find that the SCTEX/NLEX are not even lighted. its total darkness from tarlac. What is that? Why is that being permitted by you guys who are supposed to have the millions of pork barrels. my goodness, please do not assume that you are the choice of the Filipino people. We have other very good candidates too, we have Gordon, Gibo, Villanueva, Perlas, and even Estrada.

Excuse me for being open and frank. Remember this is a democratic country.

The people’s voice will be heard loud and clear once there’s clear cheating of the Presidency. Who will bear the brunt?

The response is totally out of tune, why poke on the going abroad of OFWs? That is purely their choice and not as Juggernaut said OFWs can’t hack it here so they have to go somewhere and kiss someone’s ass their. Its not a matter of failing here in the Philippines but rather the Philippine government and its governing officials have failed to provide the necessary jobs for our graduates.

Mind you, if not for the going abroad of OFWs ” Saan kaya pupulutin ang Pilipinas ngayon? sabi nga ni Erap, malamang sa kankungan. We should be more thankful to the OFWs for the billions of US dollars that they have remitted and made our economy float.

Tapos sasabihin mo, they have failed here in the Philippines. Wake up kabayan! Saan ka kaya patutungo? I don’t know about your maturity but one should not demean others capacity. Wag kang magmamarunong.

  138. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

My question is a repeat of a question asked by MB, I believe, in a past thread. The time has come to ask ourselves this question.

Do we just lie down, raise our eyes to heaven and say “Amen, Amen”… or hit the streets in indignation?

  139. From a friend who asked that his identity be withheld:

There are some questions that must be asked regarding Noynoy’s postulates in the preceding interview.

    1. Since he said that the only way he can lose is if he get cheated, why go thru the elections? Why not declare him winner now?

    2. He threatened of another “people power” revolt if he does not win. Will he be at the forefront of this action to face the forces that will thwart such a move? Or will he be in a convent under the protection of the nuns? And will he accept the responsibility for the consequences of this action, regardless?

    3. Noynoy is the only one claiming victory at this point base perhaps on the favorable surveys. Are the surveys the election? Again, why go thru the election when the surveys already declared Noynoy winner?

    4. What if Villar, Gordon, Estrada and the rest of the Candidates declare too, that the only way they will lose is if they are cheated? And that if such happens, it will be people on the streets demanding they be proclaimed the winner? Why go thru the Moro-moro when everybody will just contest the results and put everything to naught? In the 1986 snap election between Cory and FM, the yellow brigade was able to condition the mind of the noisy civil society that defeat would only be the result of being cheated. When the election results were being tabulated, Namfrel and the yellow operatives, established a winning trend for Cory by showing metropolitan centers results first. When the votes from the rural areas started to show that FM was on the way to victory, the NCI personnel walked out and Namfrel ended its count satisfied that their mission was accomplished. The people’s mind was cooked.

    5. What if Noynoy is declared the winner? Will he proclaim the honesty and the cleanliness of the election? Will it get his stamp of approval? What if the losing candidates declare they were cheated? Will Noynoy profess that him and his supporters are incapable of cheating?

    6. He reasoned out that the 12 year non-performance as a legislator is a proof of his non-cooperation with vested interest groups. Question is, other than doing nothing to promote these vested interest groups, what did he do against them? As sir Doy always ends: For evil to succeed, good men must do nothing.

    7. Noynoy cited his experience of selling Nike products(Like MJ) and helping his mother stumped the numerous coups as proofs of his leadership and managerial skills. It must be quite a pole vault to accomplish catapulting from salesman to President.

    8. Nonoy trumpets that his nearest rival is a crook while he belongs to an incorruptible family. Perhaps people like him, descendants of politicians who managed to survive even during the Japanese occupation while living in glasshouses, must refrain from throwing rocks that other people can pick up and throw back. Incorruptible family?

“That (call for another Edsa I revolt repeat) is crazy. Crazy. Crazy,” he said, virtually saying that anybody who issues such warnings of yet another people power should have his head examined.

All candidates must’ve procalimed their winning come May 10. If you are in a competition, you pronounce and project Positive. Gibo has proclaimed his win in Cebu. Let me check other sorties of other candidates when they have proclaimed that they would win and have won.

I would not follow Cardinal Rosales, especially so that he is the one who declared that :

This was said during a meeting at CBCP.
