Comelec succumbs to pressure, halts release of election results

The Commission on Elections on Tuesday decided to stop releasing updates of last Monday’s elections on the request of lawyers of some presidential and vice presidential bets.

Comelec Commissioner Lucenito Tagle said the en banc was supposed to have issued another update after Tuesday morning’s press briefing, but counsels of some candidates called them up and asked them not to.

In its 6:15 a.m. update, 78 percent of at least 38 million votes have been tallied.

“Malapit na kami dun sa 100 (percent) pero tumawag yung lawyers na sasapawan daw yung Congress (We’re nearly the 100-percent, but the lawyers called to say we’ll preempt Congress),” Tagle said. Congress will convene itself into the National Board of Canvassers to canvass the votes and proclaim the winners in the presidential and vice presidential races.

Tapusin ang bilangan to the last vote before convening the NBC, unless mag-concede si Binay or Mar. That way, walang reklamo ang mga kandidato.

Sounds fishy to me…. who are these lawyers and the candidates they represent? Comelec has a duty to let the people know who are these people and why they defer to their demands.

What is the COMELEC’s mandate? They should just do what they’re supposed to do (and BE) and not succumb to any pressure. It’s as simple as that!

How can they support their erections (of summer houses)?

Kung old system sana, pumapatak na ang metro nila, dahil ginabi sa kaka-object sa bawat balota, dahil mali ang spelling or some such dumb basis for objection.

Swapang naman ang Comelec high officials. Sila lang ang kumita sa Smartmatic contract. Paano naman yung mga nag-magic sa pagkatalo ni Padaca three years after? Isang buong practice area ng batas ang na-wipe-out. Good riddance as far as I am concerned.

So let us have one fight please.

  8. This is what the Constitution says:

“The returns of every election for President and Vice-President,duly certified by the board of canvassers of each province or city, shall be transmitted to the Congress, directed to the President of the Senate.

“Upon receipt of the certificate of canvass, the President of the Senate shall, not later than 30 days after the election, open all certificates in the presence of the Senate and the House of Representatives in joint public session, and the Congress, upon determination of the authenticity and due execution thereof in the manner provided by law, canvass the votes.

“The person having the highest number of votes shall be proclaimed elected…..”

the interest of the nation is the most important above anything else ……….. Comelec must serve interest of the people and not pressure from a losing candidate with more than 5 million votes behind ….
