Action movie superstar Jackie Chan provided a voice of reason and extended a hand of friendship to Filipinos over the recent hostage crisis via his verified Twitter account, @EyeOfJackieChan.

Jackie Chan explained that he had just arrived in Hong Kong from South Korea and was shocked to learn of the tragic hostage crisis last August 23 that left eight tourists from Hong Kong dead.

“this kind of things always happen around the world. It happen to hk’s people, the whole hk is talking about it. Its really sad,” the movie star said at around 11:40am (Philippine Time) on August 25, 2010.

“If they killed the guy sooner, they will say why not negotiate first? If they negotiate first, they ask why not kill the guy sooner? So sad,” he added.

In a magnanimous gesture, Jackie Chan extended a hand of friendship to Filipinos:

“HK is a nation built by a lot of different people..don’t worry! We do not hate!” he Tweeted.

“Humans should be united and not kill or hate each other,” he also exhorted. – GMANews.TV

  1. Bravo Jackie Chan! My tribe and I where I sit have always liked you as an actor and now we like you even more as a human being.

As I proclaimed in the other thread: JACKIE CHAN, MY IDOL!!

  3. Just a note: To my mind, we must not forget that at the end of the day, the primary cause of all the mayhem was the poor tragic sod policeman turned criminal.

Agree that the police had been totally out of their depth in dealing with the situation; media behaved irresponsibly but I think they (media) got away with “virtual murder” because no one was in control of the situation.

Post mortem results should seriously entice govt to adopt the necessary measures to ensure that police are adequately trained and prepared to handle extreme situations of this kind in the future (because similar events are likely to occur again.)

  4. My condolences to the families and relatives of the victims of this carnage.

I’m not sure if this interview with the survivor during the crisis was published in the local paper and here the wife of the victims (husband and children)narrated how his husband rush the hostage taker from the rear of the Bus trying to save his children..we will be hearing some words from our own PM as the family are Canadians living in Hongkong and the children are studiny in Toronto.

Napatahimik ang Ellenville because of Jackie Chan’s message? You must be kidding! While I appreciate his message, some people just got out of messaging because of disgust and drained emotions.

  10. Looking at what transpired over and over again made me realize that sometimes we ask to much from our policemen and soldiers, we demand that they put their lives in harms way but we don’t equip them, train them, and worst of all, we pay them a pittance…

  11. …except for the euro generals…

jackie Chan is not only a hero in the movies but also a bigger hero in real life! Mabuhay Jackie Chan!

juggernaut @ 9..wouldn’t it be nice if the issue of pays of police officers and military personnel will be addressed during the inquiry to this incident? If you look back farther way way back, one of the roots of today’s ills is that even in days when the country’s economy can well afford to pay its public servants decent pays, it did not and what they had to do? men in moment of weakness (just about all has that moment) will succumb to temptations…

  14. This is one example of how one uses his fame to make this world a little better.

He has become bigger than his screen image to me now.

  15. Mike Mike

Jakie Chan, never missed any of his movies. May his tribe increase.

As for our dear President Noynoy, all I can say is for him to stay strong, don’t let this incident affect you and your job as the leader of this republic. Instead, let this tragedy help you become stronger and wiser. There may be many who dislike you and didn’t vote for you and there will be criticisms (including mine), but at the end of the day, you are still our president, the president of 90 million plus Filipinos. I wish you well and hope that by the time you finished your term, our country, your country will be a much better place for everyone including visitors not only from HK, but from all over the world to live and stay.
    Good luck Mr. President

  16. mike, remember snake in the eagle’s shadow?

  17. Great piece, Mike. Joining you in wishing him luck.

@Jug: Yes I do remember but I like Drunken Master better. 😛

    @Anna: Thanks! 🙂

You know what’s the best thing that can come out of this tragedy? Maybe, just maybe, our police force will finally be professionalized. Since the eyes of the entire world are on them right now, siguro naman they will start to behave and conduct themselves in a professional manner. And maybe our government officials will finally start to address the needs of our police force with regards to training, equipment and salary. The Chinese are very disgusted at the moment. Hindi lang nila alam that we Pinoys have been disgusted with the police for God knows how long. Sana nga magumpisa na ang pagbabago para naman those poor victims would not have died in vain.

Nagpipigil ako at baka mag shaolin ako dito!!!

I agree Ms. Ellen sa post #13.

  23. parasabayan parasabayan

When some people are in denial and other people are overly critical, Jackie’s comments can pacify the extreme. Thanks.

    …disgust and drained emotions.

chi, wait till you see some Pinoy cops and students taking photo ops using the tragic site as backdrop.

    such insensitivity!!!

  25. tru blue tru blue

FartSee could have said what Jackie Chan articulated and it wouldn’t mean squat here, batikos pa ang aabutin, hehe.

Jackie have business ventures in the Philippines, USA and the world over…and we know most of his clients are Noypis outside of Pinas. His “Jackie Chan” resto is only 1 1/2 mile away from my house…never been there but wifey goes for take out every now and then.

Only watched his Rush hour movies.

  26. florry florry

For once we all (almost) on the same page on the wisdom of Jackie Chan’s message.

On the other hand, if he said something critical, maybe lahat tayo ay minumura siya ngayon.

At least we know how to get united in everything external that concerns our country whether it’s pro or anti.

It’s that love of country that makes us united.

  27. Chi, that’s not the end of the story. I’m writing another piece for tomorrow. Nakakaiyak.

  28. From Narciso Ner:

Ellen, I’m really touched by the gesture of Jackie Chan. Hopefully, PNoy will take action on this by personally and officially thanking Jackie Chan who is idolized and loved by the Chinese people especially those from HK.

  29. luzviminda luzviminda

    Ellen,
