Chinese Vice Premier cancels Manila visit

By Tessa Jamandre
VERA Files

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has cancelled his official visit to Manila, supposedly set for the first week of September. But the Department of Foreign Affairs clarified the cancellation had nothing to do with the hostage-taking incident that is straining diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Li was supposed to arrive for a three-day visit September 5 to 7. He would have been the first high-level official of any country to visit the two-month-old Aquino government and was hoping to reaffirm his country’s strategic partnership with the Philippines.

In the hierarchy of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Li is set to succeed Wen Jiabao as Premier in the “fifth generation” of the CPC leadership. Premier Wen steps down in 2013.

  2. It was a political move. He had to cancel his trip lest he get lynched by his own people.

  3. Becky Becky

DFA announced the cancellation? That’s strange? Why not wait for the announcement of Beijing.

    Malaya’s statement is so defensive.

    Halatang nininerbyus.

  4. sleeplessinmontreal sleeplessinmontreal

The Philippines is bothered and bewildered as a result of major, major faux pas in recent memory.

    1. Venus Raj in her “major, major problem” reply that apparently cost her the Miss Universe crown.

    2. The government in its major, major fumbling in dealing with the hostage drama that cost the lives of 8 HK tourists.

  5. Oblak Oblak

Sleeplessinmontreal, not winning an international beauty contest title is hardly a major faux pas for the country. Placing 5th in the Miss Universe is a personal triumph of Ms. Raj and maybe a cause of elation to Filipino pageant fans.

  6. Oblak Oblak

Pero this one is really disturbing:

    http://www.gmanews.tv/story/199565/china-condemns-draping-of-rp-flag-over-hostage-takers-coffin

  7. chi chi

Malaya really really committed a major major faux pas!
Ngayon, Beijing feels na-snub sila ni PNoy dahil in times of emergency, the president didn’t give them the courtesy of discussing the hostage crisis via telephone. Sad sad developments to come. Lintek na telepono kasi yan!

  8. chi chi

Putragis, and bilis ni Malaya ngayon!

  9. Same thoughts here, Becky.

I also share your sentiments on the flag, Oblak.I think the Chinese is pushing us too hard.

  10. Oblak Oblak

Hindi pa natin sinasama yung safekeeping of evidence.

  12. Oblak Oblak

  16. Oblak Oblak

Mr. Fajardo, according to news report it was the family who put the flag. They are the bereaved and let us allow them to grieve as they have lost a loved one too. Some people who do not know Mendoza may not forgive him for what he has done but we have to give the family the chance to grieve the way they want to. I understand it was the mother who refused to remove the flag and she was left wailing when the flag was removed.

If some people had in their heart to condole with the families of the Chinese victims, will it be too much for some Filipinos to pray for the families left by Mendoza.

  17. eddfajardo eddfajardo

As a former Marine officer, it pains me to see a Philippine flag utilized improperly, simple as that.

  18. Mike Mike

Can’t blame the Chinese for feeling that way. Think about it, if we were in there shoes and that this tragedy happened to us. Remember the Tsip Chao incident? The Jay Leno comment regarding the pull out of our peace keeping force in Iraq? How about the biscuit that was named after us? And several other… Give them time to mourn, nilalabas lang nila ang kanilang sama ng loob.

Tsk, tsk… 😛

  22. Oblak Oblak

Re #22. No comment. Amen na lang!!

Wala bang balita sa mga Singsons?

  26. What????? A passport (whose passport) was hurld at a senator of the Republic of the Philippines by a HK immigration officer?

Now, that is pushing things a bit too far. I’m sorry but even if I don’t like Jinggoy Estrada, he is an elected member of the Senate and to hurl a passport (his I suppose) at him is unacceptable.

I’ve been very very cool about things in the direction of the Chinese but if Tongue’s news is right given the circumstances but I’m afraid, while I understand that the Chinese of China and HK have the right to be indignant, they are not and have not always been exactly the repository of moral right!!!!!

  27. Lemme rephrase that:

“I’ve been very very cool about things in the direction of the Chinese but if Tongue’s news is right I’m afraid, we cannot let this thing pass. While I understand that the Chinese of China and HK have the right to be indignant given the circumstances, they must be told that they are not and have not always been exactly the repository of moral right!!!!!”

  28. chi chi

    Kay Jinggoy Estrada, Anna.

  29. Mike Mike

I think Jinggoy didn’t use his diplomatic passport. Anyway, it’s still not right for the immigration officer to treat any Filipino that way.

  30. Got this from fellow commenter (and Facebooker) JJ Domingo:

    http://ht.ly/2vK2O

    My comment:

JJ– I think this post is a welcome respite. You’ve done quite well. We must not be caught flat footed after all, I’m not sure that even after the dust settles, eg., after national apology, self-flagellations, criticisms, bashings, feeling losers, etc., we will not be the butt of regional bullying. In diplomacy, we know how essential it is to know the party in front of you. (wink, wink)

  31. Excerpt from the above post:

To this day, five years after it happened, there is no public record of any Chinese official acknowledging the tourist killings in Tiananmen Square and apologizing to the Madrigals, much less the Filipino people, for the murder of Emmanuel, Regina Mia and Vivian. Not a single expression of regret that the Chinese police failed in their duty to protect the lives of innocent tourists in the very heart of Beijing, in the symbolic center of a state that prides itself most of all for its ability to control and contain disorder. There was a total blackout on the part of the Chinese press, and, according to another news report, government censors quickly blocked many internet sites where Chinese users had begun to post comments about the killing. So we will likely never know what ordinary Chinese citizens had to say about about the incident. Maybe some of them were actually sorry for what happened.

“The closest thing to expressed regret was in fact the final reported action of the killer Wang, who waived his right to appeal the sentence of execution, and got a bullet in the back of his head.

“To add to the horror, it would appear that the Arroyo administration was complicit in the silence. No public statement was ever made by the Philippine government regarding the incident. Unlike in Hongkong, no flags were flown at half-mast in Manila, and no three-minute silence was observed to mark the deaths of the innocent Filipino tourists. No demand has ever been made by any Filipino official for an apology, and for an accounting.

“A full investigation of the Quirino Grandstand killing is ongoing. But what of that other killing, also in August, five years ago in Tiananmen Square?”

  32. Oblak Oblak

  33. Thanks Chi! And I agree Mike.

Maybe something good will come out from all this drama, if it’s tit for tat that they want.

Ban all importations of made in China products which by the way too inferior or what we call “patakbuhin” that easily broken even by just holding it.

China is not a major trading partner; what are we exporting to them anyway, on the other hand we have been a major importer, the dumping ground of their inferior products that I can’t believe that even a product of China peanut butter bread spread are being brought into the country.

Tell that to Walmart, which is producing there, as well as other American companies. At least they export to the world. Tayo, we export our people, because we cannot give them jobs at home.

May pagka-rude talaga ang mga taga HK. I used to travel to HK in the late 70s and mid-80s. So I learned to be-friend bi-lingual citizens. Lalo pa ngayon at komunista na sila!
    Mas rude pa sila siguro.

China is taking advantage of the mileage they can get para lumuhod si Pnoy sa kanila katulad ng ginagawa ni bansot sa kanila na kahit na ano ang ipakain sa kanya, sige lang. Meron siguro silang gustong pagawa kay Pnoy at medyo mailap si Pnoy sa kanila so they see this hostage situation as an opportunity to soften him.

  44. parasabayan parasabayan

Time heals. Let him go in a year. The tragedy would have been forgotten. Hindi naman natin kagustuhan na may mamatay. We already apologized, ano pa ang gusto nila? One time, I was en-route to India. I met a couple who were going to HK to do their Christmas shopping. Why will we put up with them?

I felt sad with the flag incident. I am pretty sure that the Mendoza family is hurting so much. Afterall, before Mendoza did this horrible crime, he was a good cop. Kung sa bagay, out of 10 deeds one does, kung may isang mali, lahat na ng ginawang tama ay walang katuturan. But still, I felt sad that this one last gesture for the dead man eh pinakikialaman pa ng China.

No need to tell Walmart. No need to even tell the whole world about it. Everyone knows that “patakbuhin” products of China are all over. Almost all big companies has been outsourcing in China, mainly because the labor is very very cheap, that’s why their products are also cheap, very low in quality. The name of the game is competition and it’s very stiff. The one who sells cheap will always beat the expensive. The market for cheap products is much much bigger than the more expensive. And here lies the success of the Chinese, they have been very wise to take advantage of cornering a bigger share of the pie by going cheapie.

Of course poor Philippines can not even manage to fake a pose against the giant. China is now second economy wise to the US. If it can maintain the growth rate of the econmy, it’s not a wild guess that years from now she will overtake the US.

Historically, culturally, commercially, we cannot escape our ties with China…and in this modern international community, there is no room for enmity, wars or the threat of one is more a deterrent than national policy…its not efficient and counterproductive….

  61. Statement of Sen. Francis Pangilinan on the draping of the flag on the casket of former Police Senior Inspector Rolando mendoza:

While I personally object to, and disagree with, the using of the flag to cover the casket of Mendoza, there is no law that explicitly bans the use of the flag in such a manner, and therefore we will have to respect the individual freedoms of our people.

Unlike China, we live under a democracy. And under a democracy, there is freedom of expression. We ask for China’s understanding in that we live under different systems, and what may be prohibited and banned in their nation may not be so in ours.

The Philippines is a democratic country. What is banned under a nation under one party rule may not be applicable in a democracy like ours. We are both sovereign nations, and I trust that China, in the final analysis, will respect the Philippine sovereignty and will not bully a small nation like the Philippines on a matter involving the use by our citizens of the Philippine flag despite the recent hostage taking tragedy involving their nationals.

time of crisis differentiate the man/woman from the child, those who act maturely and responsibly to find peaceful resolution of the crisis for greater good could be called man/woman, while those who take advantage of the situation by inflammatory words, racist remarks and reckless accusations were still mentally a child, many filipinos and HK nationals are acting childishly. Do we allow a criminal act of one person damage peace and good relationship of 92 millions filipinos and 7 million HK nationals? are we wittingly or unwittingly contributing to the deterioration of the situation, or do we want to be part of the solution instead? reckless accusations have been hurled by politicians with selfish motives, it took the great words of jacky Chan, a chinese national to bring sanity amid the confusion.

“The sooner we stop drawing perverse satisfaction from engaging in national self-laceration by judging ourselves on the basis of a single incident, the easier it will be to change our society.”—–Randy David

Interesting. One thing, people tend to believe what they see, hear, and read about and most of the time conclude with consideration to their experiences. Our dealing with our government had been very negative lately. People have been pushed to their limits trying to get by under the circumstances. Sometimes, the Government needs to appreciates the limitations of the many they represent, show some respect and promote equality by upholding to the highest level our rights as defined by our Bill of Rights, and really work hard for the better for GOOD GOVERNANCE, the easier it will be to change our society.

  73. olan olan

It is not enough to ask the people to change. They always do and they do adjust under the circumstances to live and those who can’t perish. The burden of change is burdensome to many and most of the times beyond one’s control. Actions is more for the one who govern simply because they are the ones provided with power to lead.

Exactly!!! I’ve been posting similar thoughts on facebook. I don’t believe in continuing this morbid act of self flagellating ad vitam eternam.

    Look who’s talking about democracy.

If I don’t know this guy Mr. Noted, what he did in the past, maybe I will be cheering his press release.

Democracy is define by Mr. Noted Pangilinan as the freedom to abet and cover up cheating in elections, to condone cheaters, and remained silent on the undemocratic and corrupt rule of cheaters.

He is one of the authors of the stolen presidency of gloria and so he must share the blame on all the sins of the previous regime.

mura ang mga items na Made in Hongkong (lalo na sa damit) pero mura din ang Made in India or Made in Indonesia..it can not be denied however, that suits tailored in Hongkong are better at mas mura kaysa Made in Italy..hindi na nila Monopoly ang mga bilihin..

Randy David is still in denial mode? What a loser. – Tongue (quoting myself)

Randy says this is a single incident, it’s not. I’m sorry for him if his memory is failing. I’ve quoted everywhere the incidents like the Villaruel assault, the Victory Liner incident, the Ducat bus hijack, now this. Each time the media and the cops played separate roles, instead of playing together as a team.

Self flagellation is not even enough punishment, annihilation, maybe.

In Gloria’s time, there were 90 million cowards, today, there are 90 million idiots.

It’s a damn if you do and damn if you don’t for the Chinese vice-premier. But if I were in his position I would proceed in visiting the country. Aside from the official purpose of the visit, another reason is to have a direct communication with people involved in the hostage-taking incident, especially the president. He also have to convey the sentiments and frustrations of his people about what happened and assure both sides that both countries is hoping that it will get over it eventually. He also need to demonstrate to RP the interest of the Chinese gov’t. to see to it that accountability be identified and redress be had, if necessary.
