Tumbukin ang problema

A grim ending

Statement of the President on the hostage-taking incident at the Quirino Grandstand

Aquino says brother of hostage taker and media fueled tense situation

With the rest of the Filipino people, I wish to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims whose lives were lost in the hostage situation at the Quirino Grandstand. The Secretary of Foreign Affairs has conveyed our deep feelings of sorrow to the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China and the people of Hong Kong through Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang. I have tasked Secretaries Soliman and Lim to provide everything necessary for the recovery and return home of the survivors. I have directed the fullest cooperation with the Hong Kong authorities on the part of our officials.

From the onset of this incident, the hostage-taker seemed to not be belligerent, as shown by the release of hostages. These were encouraging signs.

We were going to wait him out. The idea was to let the ground commanders who are the experts in this field handle the operation with minimal interference from people who are less expert.

Remembering Capt Rene Jarque

May his dreams live on
Last Thursday, Aug. 19, was the fifth death anniversary of Capt. Rene Jarque, an officer I have always held in awe for his superior intellect and unblemished integrity.

Rene died of a heart attack at the young age of 40 in Jakarta, where he was an executive of a multinational corporation. A graduate of the United States Military Academy (Class 1986), Rene served the country with courage and honor as a member of the elite Scout Rangers of the Philippine Army.

A reformist at heart and in deed, Rene left military service in frustration. He wrote, “ As a young officer, I used the power of the pen to question things that were not right in the Armed Forces of the Philippines–incompetence, corruption, lack of strategic direction, and unprofessionalism. My writings were a voice in the wilderness, but the criticisms earned me a reputation as a rebel officer–too honest and too frank for my own good. I really thought reforms could be achieved through intellectual honesty and awareness. “

Rene further said, “I realized that the prevailing environment in the AFP was no longer acceptable to my sense of duty and honor, that there was more to life than being a soldier in serving the country and people. To fulfill that, I needed to live outside of the uniform.”

He is the son of Gen (ret) Raymundo Jarque, known for having joined the New People’s Army, when justice was perverted against him. The elder Jarque has long left the underground movement and is now working with a government corporation.

ABS-CBN update: Quisumbing says sorry to media

Coco goes loco

What's happening to her?

It looks like there’s another kind of torture reporters who are covering the Commission on Human Rights have to suffer with Commissioner Coco Quisumbing.

When is Etta Rosales going to assume the position of chair?

Here’s a related report from the Inquirer:

CHR exec goes ballistic over media

by Leila B. Salaverria

Human Rights Commissioner Cecilia Quisumbing yesterday scolded a radio reporter for refusing to go into the bathroom with her, the only place, she said, where she could grant him the interview he had requested.

DzMM reporter Dennis Datu became the target of Quisumbing’s wrath when he did not comply with her instruction to go inside the bathroom so she could update him on the torture case the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) was investigating.
