Well what can we expect. Didn’t he say August 23 was a minor problem and it will be laughable. Maybe he was referring to the Chinese who are now laughing at him.

  2. chi chi

Baligtarin man ang mundo, walang logic yan.

Buhay nga naman parang life eh!

Well, for the best ng bansa…it’s purely politics ang dramang ito!

Balweg, I don’t buy that Beijing has control of Pinas gov’t and business. It’s the president’s advisers and friends who seem to have control of him.

  8. Tedanz Tedanz

    4) Ferdinand Marcos (Chinese-Japanese-Ilocano)~ Martialrule?
    5) José Rizal (Spanish-Chinese-Tagalog)~nasa China ang the biggest rebulto niya?
    6) Jun Lozada — witness of the NBN-ZTE deal
    7) St. Lorenzo Ruiz (Chinese-Tagalog) — first Filipino saint, said to be surnamed Li.
    8) Marcelo H. del Pilar (Spanish-Chinese-Tagalog)
    9) Sergio Osmeña (Chinese-Cebuano-Spanish)

  10. Safe to say that most of us have Chinese blood somewhere down the line (or up the line)… This is not the issue. The issue is our primary allegiance. Is it to the country of our birth or adoption (or whichever)?

There are good Filipinos of Chinese descent as there are bad ones just other nationals in in any country where former immigrants land.

And like Chi, I don’t believe Filipinos of Chinese descent control the govt…perhaps it’s true that there are many who take advantage — in the fullest sense of the term, of the vast opportunities that are on offer and even go to the extent of excacerbating the level of the alreay corrupt institutions but as ever, it is THE ESTABLISHMENT, i.e., that is and should be in control.

  11. Ooops, THE ESTABLISHMENT, i.e., manned by our elected leaders, that is and should be in control.

  12. General Danny Lim is one example of a Filipino of Chinese heritage whose loyalty to the death I’m sure is towards the Philipines and would be prepared to give up his life to fight the land of his paternal ancestors if ever it came to that.

My Dad was an example too of one who had Chinese ancestry but fought for and served his country well even if it meant getting killed in the process for the Philippines during the Japanese occupation — his brother a Filipino (naturally with Chinese ancestry being my father’s brother) died in the Bataan Death March.

  13. preno preno

i agree that it’s not logical to use as reason the filipinos now in jail in china for not attending the nobel prize event. but whoever thought this up as a reason within the DFA also made a terrible mistake, for this line of reasoning is also broadcasting dangerous presumptions about the legal system in china… by not antagonizing its political leaders, are we hoping by some ghost of a chance that this political goodwill will persuade chinese leaders to intervene in a legal case? if this does transpire, and the filipinos are eventually freed… wouldn’t this be a confirmation of what people have been criticizing china for? it’s not a question of whether china’s system is right or wrong, but the foreign policy pronouncement was simply defective on many levels.

  14. bayong bayong

  16. I got reliable information that last October, in a talk of DFA officers with the Chinese embassy people here, they were told that there’s a possibility that one (a female) could be commuted to life sentence but it’s difficult for the three because they are hardcore drug traffickers.

I don’t know why we are staking the country’s integrity for drug traffickers even if they are Filipinos.

  17. Its apparent that the nobel peace price is being used as a tool for international politics already, one that favors the US…China has seen and learned the lessons in the old USSR, splintering it…
Giving the peace price to someone denouncing one’s political issues in his own country? – why didn’t they give any to Filipinos denouncing Gloria’s reign of impunity?
There is no honor in the Nobel Peace Price anymore, its another western tool…notably US…and its glitter fades each passing year…
Just let them shove it where that sun doesn’t shine…

  18. From the looks of it there are more pressing reasons other than the drug traffickers…known only to those who need to know…let them sort this thing out…thats why we elected them…

  19. If you really want to send a message, make it more direct to the point, more precise – say “Mr. President, let those drug traffickers die, good riddance!” and let everyone know…
…maybe the Filipinos are still worth dying for, even the low lifes?

So his reason for boycotting the Oslo celebration is not just another show of spineless leadership but a lying one too.

  21. Notice the media is up in arms about this issue, then again we have to see that the media is not right all the time, especailly when they directly want to influence public opinion instead of just being a mirror of actual events and allowing us to decide for ourselves…
…remember how Gloria used the media (and how they let themselves be used) when she grabbed power? the media is not perfect, it is not infallible, they should be neither perfect or fallible anyway – just a mirror of the truth, not one to dictate how we should think, decide, and respond…has it become too powerful already?

  22. florry,
hacienda luicita deaths are in the past, we can’t do anything about it even if we cried blood? can you?
we have sonething here that hasn’t happened yet…and you expect that we do nothing about it? what line of reasoning is that?
if its balls you want, its balls you get! he knew the all powerful media gods will demand for his head if he goes this path – but he chose the unpopular road, the one less travelled, the one with media blessing…knowing fully well the outcome…come to think of it, other than the media hype and some bloggers witty remarks – no one cares! ask the people on the street? they don’t even give a hoot about the nobel peace price but most know our president and guess what? surprisingly most people actually like him…hmmmm, why is that? when the media has been practically throwing everything at him, even the kitchen sink?
try to come out in luneta and shout to your heart’s content, rant about the government, etc, and you’ll see…no one gives a hoot!
…maybe because he goes out there for all to malign, insult, complain…what about us? we are blogging courageously under anonymity, very brave indeed…

so you wanted the policemen/soldiers to allow themselves to get killed instead? there you go again, please understand that some people, me included, are not as brave and fearless as you – some of us don’t have the courage to just allow ourselves to get killed by people threatening us violence! you can get a nobel peace price by standing in between a kmu infiltrated, angry mob, and the authorities? you have to try it sometime…lets see you spill your guts and lets see you show how intelligent you are by acting as a negotiator also…
have you ever been trapped inside your compound because angry demonstrators are blocking all entrance/exits and are even shooting it our with the security guards? well i have, and believe me it wasn’t pleasant at all…you have to try it sometime…

It’s true that was a long time ago , but how about giving them justice, dont’t they deserve it? Concern means caring and if Noynoy cares, he should see to it that justice is served, but up to now nothing has been done.

And if, as you wanted to imply, that these farmers were ready to go to war, maybe at least there are some casualties on the other side.

Now, tell me, if any, how many soldiers/policemen got killed in that encounter?

the only thing the government can do with its citizens caught committing crimes in other countries is to aid them legally and make sure that they get fair and impartial trial before the country’s courts in accordance to its laws and help them going through the process of appeal if that is possible. but to give in to that country’s demand in regards to violating its own principles to save or lessen the gravity of its citizens crimes and punishment is the same as bribery…and it is not good.

I do not advocate being a client state of anybody, but that seems to be the thrust of the moves not to displease China. Whether a neighbor state is pleased or not should not change the decision if made on principle. Ironically, this is the son of the democracy icon, who supports Aung Sung Kyi. Why the difference between Li and Aung? Also, the late Ninoy himself was a dissident.

With respect to the issue of being bullied by one superpower as against another, here is an anecdote from the life of Carlos P Romulo, uncle of the current sec.

In 1948 in Paris, France, at the third UN General Assembly, he strongly disagreed with a proposal made by the Soviet delegation headed by Andrei Vishinsky, who challenged his credentials by insulting him with this quote: “You are just a little man from a little country.” In return, Romulo replied, “It is the duty of the little Davids of this world to fling the pebbles of truth in the eyes of the blustering Goliaths and force them to behave!”, leaving Vishinsky with nothing left to do but sit down.

The above shows that quiet dignity can be employed when being bullied, without having to back down.
