Magsaysay and all these elected officials must realise once and for all that their having been elected to a post does not entitle them to abuse or bully people, verbally or physically nor to brag about their position or to use it any which way. They, of all people, should set the example by being humble and patient vis-a-vis the ordinary working folks. They are in their position of power thanks to the largesse of the common working people.

Now, Mr Magsaysay, I believe you also must apologise to your children for swearing at a person who was just doing her job. They must have been utterly shocked to hear you, their father, say those words. And I’m convinced that if you don’t change tack right away, you will be turning your children into mini you, swearing and cursing ordinary working folks because that’s how they are being educated by their parents. Would you like that?

  2. What an a-hole! and he looks andropausal himself.

Ms Ocampo, on the other hand, should have perhaps tried to do something when she was requested for a seat side by side and offered to ask the passenger whose seat Mr Magsaysay wants if he/she would be willing to do it. It would have been normal courtesy from a person doing her kind of job just to exert a bit more effort instead of giving a categorical “hindi puwede” reply. If she had tried it and the reply was “no puwede”, she would have done her job completely.

  4. I’ve been in this situation several times when travelling with hubby or family, eg., requesting lounge attendant (when on business class flights) to check if family could sit together.

The initial answer would be “I’m afraid, we’re full but I’ll ask the passenger/s if they’d be willing to…” and if passenger can’t be reached, the ground attendant would suggest that we talked to purser as soon as we board. Never just a categorical “no puwede.”

  5. Ooops, and even on economy bookings…

  6. chi chi

  7. anna,
magsaysay should at least be sensitive to the situation of these PAL flight crew, just in in europe a lot of people are very much affected by the massive layoffs, hardly ideal working conditions. and there is really something wrong if someone demands to be treated extremely nice (more than anyone else). if you ask for a favor and the answer is “no” and it won’t endanger your life or someone else’s then accept it. why make a big fuss, mamamatay na ba silang magkapamilya kung hindi sila magkatabi? kung hindi pwede di hindi pwede bakit kailangang magalit at magmura pa? bakit hindi ba siya sanay sa sagot na hindi pwede? baka kulang lang siya sa trips abroad kaya hindi pa siya nasanay? buti nga hindi siya pinababa ng piloto.

AnnaDeBrux, you’re completely right. As a long-time traveller, I’ve requested that many times and were done, as long as the stewardesses approach the concerned passengers politely and explain the situation. I myself willingly yielded my seat in such cases.
We should also consider the other side of the coin. I also, and I’m sure frequent travellers like me, have my share of unpleasant experiences with rude Filipina stewardesses. What I observed in general is that they prefer to serve foreigners, not kababayans. When they do serve their kabayans (particularly in the Middle East where millions of Pinoy OFWs are working), you usually feel they want to give the impression that they are superior than you and that they have the much better job than you. Yun bang tratong medyo nanlalait. Kasi siguro, they look down on construction workers, domestic helpers, etc. as passengers not worthy of professional treatment (wrong, of course). Di nila alam marami ring Pinoy passengers who are managers, consultants, etc.
For me, since the last several years I try to ensure I use an airline without mainly Filipina crews. I fly the often-voted world’s and Asia’s best airline (with the “service other airlines talk about” – I hope this is not plugging, Ellen), then I really feel what non-racist, professional airline service is all about.

  9. Incidentally, I was asked on FB if UK PM Cameron would buy himself a Porsche.

I said I didn’t think so. Firstly, to Cameron, the PM of one of the most powerful nations in the world and one who comes from an old rich family, and who himself is very wealthy (same with his wife) would find it much too nouveau riche (new moneyed class) to own one even if perhaps he might want to drive one (he’s very young); secondly, being an astute politician, and one with first class intelligent brain, he knows it would be a political disadvantage to do something of the sort particularly at a time when he is cutting down welfare subsidies. It would be an incomprehensible act not only to the Brits but to most in Europe.

The public would nail him to the mast of Westminster for being insensitive.

But I guess it’s all a question of values.

  10. and most of the time it depends on the way you ask for a favor, ask nicely, not in an imposing way. smiling, using the right words, and if its a big one like asking if there are seats for upgrade to business class (from economy) “turn on the charm”, works for me. 🙂

  11. Ooops, Ellen… wrong thread. So sorry! Will transfer it to previous thread!!! 🙁

  12. chi chi

jug, in line with your nakakatawang comments, meron sa wall ni Mang Juan Pinoy sa FB na comment na humagalpak ako ng tawa. Best comment ever re PNoy’s purchase of Porshe, 🙂 🙂 🙂

Didith Demagante MGA BASTOS NA TO….KUNG TUYO PALA KINAKAIN NYO ..GUSTO NYO TUYO DIN ULAMIN NI PNOY PARA SAMAHAN KAYO SA PAGHIHIRAP NYO? MAGSIKAP KAYO PARA DI KAYO TINATAMAAN NG INGGIT!

    Hahahaha! I thought ‘kaw ang nag-koment! 🙂

  13. Hi phil…

Idem. Passengers are usually cooperative and understanding particularly for a travelling group composed of the same family.

Fortunately, in all the years I travelled on PAL (from Europe when PAL still served Paris-Frankfurt-Manila route), never had a problem. Like Jug, I try to turn on the charm 🙂 and it usually worked. Have made many friends from PAL crew. And usually they would go out of their way to try to please. And even if it didn’t work, I would shrug my shoulders and leave it. To me, those people were working for a living like me and it wasn’t worth the effort to bully a fellow whose salary was probably (most likely) a fraction of mine (at the time.)

But equally, I’ve been told of unpleasant treatment by flight attendants vis-a-vise passengers who look like domestic helpers.

  14. re unpleasant treatment from PAL flight crew, its true, and not less than a CEO of a big multinational pointed it out to me. he noticed the different treatment with OFWs, as if they were smelly, etc., and he said he complained directly to Lucio Tan at a function they both attended. there were some changes after that (i hope).
you really can’t compare PAL to singapore airlines nowadays, but i still fly PAL, if its helping our local industry, titiisin ko na lang, hopefully the company will see some areas for improvement also when there are complaints.

  15. chi chi

  16. chi chi

    Ellen, pasingit…thanks.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Poll lawyer Sixto Brillantes has taken his oath as new chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec). abs-cbnnews.com

  17. Jug, even Malaysia Airlines is highly professional too, very efficient and courteous, will go out of their way to please passengers and always with a smile. But agree, Singapore is absolutely tops!

  18. Chi, 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 hahahah talagang kambal…

  19. Ellen

I think whatever the reason was, Mr Magsaysay’s words and utterances and his demeanour during that altercation was reprehensible but I have two questions:

    (1) w I’d like to know if indeed Ms Ocampo actually say “What’s your problem?” which to me is a bit aggressive and discorteous any which way you put it particularly vis a vis a paying client who is requesting for a service.

    (2) Was Mr Magsaysay really entitled to a business class seat, i.e., did his fare reflect it? We do know that many govt officials get upgraded on PAL because of their position (have seen this many times.)

  20. Phil, re#9. Yes, I like the service of Singapore Airlines. Very efficient. But like Jug, I take PAL as much as possible. As a Filipino, I find affinity with PAL.

  21. Anna and Chi, re #s 10 and 13. I was about to transfer them.

    Thanks.

  22. chi chi

  23. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Asking for “service” is actually the original sin here, typical of conceited legislators.

In many flights, this has happened. And the parent politely asked the seatmate of the child (me), “Could we trade seats Sir, so that I could sit with my son/daughter?” “Oh by all means”, sabi nung Pinoy (me). Tapos ang problema.

Had the woman said “I’m a Congresswoman”, I would probably have said F you. I will sit beside your son so that I can slap him a few times when you are not looking.

  24. Ha..ha..ha..

  25. eddfajardo eddfajardo

Ang mga bastos na government official na katulad ni Eulogio Magsaysay has no place to represent any sector of society in our country. Much more, ang mga baboy na katulad niya, dapat mag resign na. Nakakahiya sa pangalan ng “Magsaysay.”

  27. eddfajardo eddfajardo

Ha-ha-ha! Agree ako kay no. 24, above.

  29. Mike Mike

Very typical of a congressman who acts like that. 😛

  30. Talaga naman. Congressman Eulogio Magsaysay is a partylist representative of the Alliance of Volunteer Educators (AVE). He represents a marginalized sector and got into the news while traveling business class to the US of A with his family presumably to spend Christmas holidays there. But it’s not surprising anymore because that’s how the partylist system operates. We know of somebody who represents the Security Guards although he’s not one of them and it’s alright with the Comelec and Supreme Court. It follows that Rep. Magsaysay is not required to be educated to volunteer as an educator. To be ballistic with words such as “menopausal b*tch, b*tch, b*tch” was not his concern because to him, it might not be offensive and sexist to the female gender. He must have in mind that he can utter similar words because a stalwart in the past administration who addressed his boss as “evil bitch” got away with it and is now with the present dispensation.

  31. Mike Mike

I have also observe how they (PAL stewardess) treated OFW passengers. A lot of them especially long flights looks like manangs and lolas na masungit. 😛

I was once seated beside an OFW going to HK. The poor girl was asking for something from one of the PAL crew, hindi man lang pinansin at nilagpasan ang pobre. So I called their attention and thats the only time they attended to her. 🙁

  32. I know of one na nanunutok pa ng baril kapag na overtake mo ang magarang niyang sports car.

Mike, talaga? Overtake only and ready to kill already? Sira ulo!

  33. Once in Pinas, years ago, a nephew of mine came to pick me up to take me to his Mom’s home and by the same token to show me his sports car of which he was proud. On Edsa, a taxi overtook us. Nephew immediately went on a rabid chase, driving like crazy. I made batok to him (really pinalo ko sa ulo siya) and screamed at him. I called him names, told him he was the most idiotic person in the world, a person who was mayabang. That he was putting our lives in danger because his idiotic pride got piqued just because a “lowly” taxi got the better of his car. Of course nephew conceded and apologised to me.

Learned later from his Mom that nephew also kept a gun in his car and when I asked why, said for self-defence when he drove late at night. Told both that they were barking mad.

  34. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Ang dali palang maging congressman sa atin. Just string together a nice sounding acronym, oks na; like this volunteer educator and the chief sikyu.

Reminds me of two orgs in UP. One was in BA (Business Ad), called the SEMEN (society of emancipated men). The other was secret female group in law school, with some of the prettiest girls as members. They called themselves the CWL.

No, not the Catholic Women’s League, but the Crotch Watchers League. They ranked guys according to whether their frontage indicated Magnums, or mere snub noses. They had no ranking for working students, who usually came with their polo barongs; there was insufficient evidence.

  35. chi chi

#31. Joeseg, ganun ba?

  36. Mike Mike

    Anna #33

I don’t think naman na itutuloy niya. Like this Magsaysay guy, he just wanted to let others know that he is a congressman and siga siya. 🙂

  37. saxnviolins saxnviolins

There is an explanation of sorts from the pig’s fifteen year old daughter, in the column of Ducky Paredes.

    http://www.malaya.com.ph/jan17/edducky.html

Pala-utot pala yung eleven year old na anak (suffering from gas pains daw, dahil sa appendicitis), kaya worried ang Itay. Eleven? Kailangan pang tumabi sa Tatay?

  38. Tedanz Tedanz

Customer is always right.

  40. SNV, thanks for link to Ducky’s column.

  41. Mike Mike

    Tedanz @ #40.

Hehehe 🙂
Kaya yung kaibigan kong flight steward lumipat ng ibang airline dahil pinipilit daw siyang sumali sa kanilang union eh ayaw niya. Bukod duon, mas maganda syempre ang pay at benefit nung nilipatan niya. 😛

  43. Isagani Isagani

The things people say and do when they are mad. That is a measure of one’s character. Everyone is entitled to lose it once and awhile. The thing though is that after some thought some people continue to do and say the wrong things. And to make it worse, they criticize those who do the very same thing they do.

Yep, people are like that. So to all who think that they are better than this Magsaysay guy, look at yourself and maybe it will give you pause to tone things down.

  44. Ducky Paredes has a point:

The real test of good service is when passengers/customers are all treated the same way, no matter their rank or position. If what happens in other countries is racial discrimination, here, although lighter skin is also admired what discrimination exists is based more on position, infamy and wealth.

  45. Tedanz Tedanz

  46. vic vic

yes, I must agree that it is but natural that everyone could lose it any given time and snap…but it is the consequence that differs…if Magsaysay is just an average Citizen the consequence would have different, but as a Representative it is demanded that he also has to take a different consequence…that is why they have a different set of rules, the code of Ethics that govern their behavious as the Elected Representatives of their constituents and the lawmakers…and not to use these powers to take advantage for their personal convenience and to discrimate their fellow citizens. These Elected officials are already gifted with enough privileges as they are…the privilege to abuse in not theirs under any circumstances without the corresponding consequences to take. In neighbouring Japan…a little dagger in the chest will do

  47. but as a Representative it is demanded that he also has to take a different consequence…that is why they have a different set of rules, the code of Ethics that govern their behavious as the Elected Representatives of their constituents and the lawmakers…

    — Vic

    Agree!

  48. isagani,
good. keep telling yourself that. 🙂

  49. Mike Mike

– tedanz

Manang Sarah or Lola Sarah. Hehehe 😛

I’ve nothing against senior citizen making a decent living but the thing is, being an FA is a tough job and could somehow affect their ability to do their job well and efficiently. Besides, baka di na nila makayanan or pwedeng bumigay ang health nila.
We also need to consider that other airlines (read: competitors) has much younger crews on their flight, young and sexy. 😛

  50. mike,

  54. tru blue tru blue

A nut case of “he said/she said”. ABSCBN article in part said that “the congressman was given good service when Ocampo found out who he was”…..what the ????…kung regular Juan pala, tiis na lang?

The logical approach (to me); after they were seated in the plane was for the lawmaker to request the person he was seated with to swap with his son, or vice versa. No harm in asking.

  55. tru blue tru blue

On Virgin Atlantic flight from San Fran to London last year, wifey and I were not seated together (which was good for me actually – no honey do this/that to listen to). She asked the Brit seated next to me if he could swap seat with her; he didn’t mind. Huh?!

  56. tru blue tru blue

My cynical take on the congressman…all along he wanted to make known he was someone with power by hook or by crook…with his wife as an accessory…wink! Lord almighty….in these islands of “hindi mo ba ako kilala” tsk tsk….

  57. tru blue tru blue

These two combatants will settle this dispute one way or another. Both will find out their parents were classmates noong panahon ng hapon; or they’re related pala in some ways, hehe….

I’ve never heard of the final outcome of that “golf course” incident” last year. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding.
That’s the good part living in these islands.

In high school….many years ago, this prick stabbed me in the back me with an icepick. I sued and when we were in court…my late father found out he went to high school with the prick’s dad. Both fathers started reminiscing of their school days and forgot about me….hallllow?? I was stabbed you know? Their firm handshakes pretty much settled my misfortunes.

  58. vic vic

    anna
i was related to the Magsaysays by marriage (my youngest sis is married to one of the Magsaysays, the grandnephew of the Late President) and bibs would address the Late President the same as she would her own grandpa (first cousin of the President) with the same tenderness Lolo Monching..but during the more than 20 years of that relationship, the Magsaysays I came to know are very polite and respectable (i have not met any of their relatives in the Philippines, but mostly in California)…so it is surprising that those that are in power can not emulate the Icon of the family that may have helped them attained their present status…and it pains the rest of the family who have been trying hard to keep the name clean as they are always proud to be part of the family of the Great Man.

  59. Tedanz Tedanz

Eto ang binigkas ng Kgg. Magsaysay .. “You shut up, menopausal bitch, bitch, bitch!”.

  72. rose rose

Ito bang si Rep. Magsaysay ay anak ni Genaro Magsaysay? Bakit ganyan ang ugali niya…and if I am not mistaken ang nanay niya ay anak ng isang Senador din..naalaala ko may subject kami noon na Character and Conduct…tinuturo pa ito sa ating paaralan o nabura na sa curriculum?…

Listen boys and girls.

    @ROSE (NUMBER 73)

Eulogio Rodriguez (former president of the Nacionalista Party for the past 18 years and ex senate speaker).

“PAL says sorry to Magsaysay” … Inquirer

“While it is true that our ground staff does not have any authority to change seats of passengers, we believe that our staff should have exercised appropriate and effective customer relations as regards to the subject query. The incident happened quickly that the supervisor assigned at the gate did not have time to intervene,” PAL said.

  76. vic vic

While it is true that PAL failed its customer Big time, it is the misdemeanor of the Congressman that is the issue here. (found out, he is a second cousin of my brother in law, but just the same, it is not proper to call a woman any name, including swearing, that even my brother in law would not hesitate to punch him in the nose if he ever say that to any female member of his family, especialy the bibs, and he is much, much larger than his cousin, not in girth)..but since he already apologised, albeit with excuses, then its time to move on..cousins are cousins…

  77. Vic,

Right… just remembere that you were a Magsaysay relative.

  78. Guido Guido
