Advocates for the rehabilitation of the long- mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant led by former Rep. Mark Cojuangco and his wife, Kimi, the incumbent representative of the 5th district of Tarlac have been quoted as undaunted by what happened to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant which is now beleaguered after its stability was shaken by the 8.9 intensity earthquake and tsunami that followed the tremor that hit Japan last March 11.

Mark Cojuangco was quoted by Kyodo News as saying, “The design for BNPP is more earthquake resistant than Fukushima. What I’m telling you is that the Bataan plant is a better power plant (design) than Fukushima, although we really need to look at Fukushima as a benchmark.”

Kimi, who has filed a bill to determine the BNPP’s “operability”, acknowledged public sentiments in the light of what is happening in Fukushima. “Pursuing the bill needs to wait,” she said.

The Cojuangco couple should take a look at the findings of the study conducted by the University of the Philippines led by its National Institute of Geological Sciences.

The BNPP was a project by the Marcos government energy department as a solution to the country’s energy problems. It was stopped by the Cory Aquino administration.

I have covered the BNPP way back in the 80’s and there were allegations that showed it was sitting on an earthquake fault but Dr. Carlos Arcilla, director of the National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) at the University of the Philippines, belies that.

Nevertheless BNPP proponents then assured the public that the plant was built to withstand high intensity earthquakes. That was what the Japanese also did in all their nuclear plants including Fukushima Daiichi because it is known that Japan, like the Philippines, is in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area where large numbers of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean. And look at what is happening now.

Worse than being in an earthquake fault, a recent UP study showed BNPP is “on the volcano”, Mahar Lagmay, one of the scientists that participated in the study, said.

The volcano is Mt. Natib and the BNPP is on its slope, Lagmay said.

There’s a lot of scientific jargon in the study but it’s conclusion is clear enough. It says according to the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency, “… when evidence shows the existence of capable faults within 1 km of the nuclear facility, another site must be considered.”

The study said, “Such is the case for the BNPP where capable faults associated with the Lubao Fault were identified within 1 km of the nuclear power plant.”

Here’s excerpts from the study’s conclusion;” Natib is considered a capable volcano based on evidence of an active hydrothermal system with a magmatic signature and a calculated 1 x 10-4 – 2 x 10-4 per year with 95% confidence interval probability of a future volcanic eruption with VEI 6-7.

“Given that Natib is considered a capable volcano the impacts of volcanic hazards to the site were assessed based on the draft guidelines provided by the IAEA.

“ Among the hazards identified, lava flows and pyroclastic density currents are within the screening distance value (SDV), the maximum distance from the source to the site at which the volcanic phenomenon could be a hazard. Out of all the volcanic phenomena, the occurrence of PDCs and opening of new vents proximal to the NPP do not have any engineering solutions. Lava flow and lahar hazards, however, can be addressed by engineering design.

“ Faults were mapped in southwest Natib with one seen in Napot Point cutting through an indurated lahar outcrop up to the ground surface. Using the second criterion of the IAEA guidelines for seismic hazards, these tectonic structures in Napot Point are evaluated as capable faults because they show a structural relationship with the Lubao Fault, which is considered active based on truncated recent fluvio-deltaic sediments and paleo sea-level reconstruction from a peat layer recording as much as 3.5 m movement over the past 1,500 a BP.”

The study said “Although the work on Natib Volcano is still in progress, enough data has been gathered, sufficient for use as one of the scientific bases for the decision of the Philippine government to recommission or not, the mothballed Bataan Nuclear facility and general hazards preparedness by communities on the slopes of the volcano.”

Aside from NIST, UP’s Marine Science Institute and National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development also participated in the study.

    Noong di pa active ang mga fault lines at yung issue ng bulkan na iyan ay di pa dapat talaga katakutan, eh itinigil ang operation ng BNPP. Siyempre gusto na naman ng mga big oil companies na maging dependent tayo sa kanila.

    Ngayong ang mga plates ay gumagalaw na (kahit magkaiba ang plate ng Pinas at Japan) hindi na siya dapat buksan.
    Ang mangyayari, kapag tuluyang magkagulo sa Middle East (dahil sa mga anarchist na mahilig sa divide and conquer para sa langis at political influence and power), magkaroon ng oil embargo (huwag naman sana). Kasi kung mangyari iyon ano ang gagamitin ng Pinas para sa enerhiya?

    “I think the proponents of nuclear power , as well as the critics, are way off in the on-going debate on nuclear power.

    “The problems in Japan now is because the Japanese prepared worst case scenarios for only one catastrophe happening at one time i.e. and earthquake of high magnitude. However, they got hit with a one-two punch from mother nature. They got a powerful earthquake which was followed by a tsunami.

    “This one-two punch is a scenario that could happen in the Philippines. But we could argue further, that in our case
    we should actually prepare for a one-two-three punch scenario. There is a strong earthquake followed by a tsunami.

    “And then, unfortunately we got an Ondoy 2. The high floodwaters put out the fire in the nuclear reactor. But the flood spread radioactive waste far and wide to 20% of our land area.

Serge Osmena stated that we allow air travel although there is always a risk of a plane crash. However, the worst scenario in an airplane crash even if it involves the Airbus 380, will be 700 casualties, the maximum seating capacity of this plane.

    “In a nuclear meltdown specially with a multiple disaster filing on top of each other, like the one-two-three punch from mother nature I indicated above, the catastrophe will be so widespread that only the most avid gambler will dare take the nuclear option.”

  6. The site selection study undertaken prior to building the BNPP was a tedious and expensive process. I should know, we sold the plant. I am not sure about this, but some company bigshots have mentioned that one of the top considerations in the choice of Bataan was because it was accessible to both major US military bases outside of the US – Clark and Subic.

    There are several explanations that come to mind.

    First, spent fuel storage facilities may be transparently located and monitored – instead of our usual doubts that the US has buried these somewhere deep within the bases. This would be to our advantage.

    Second, security of the plant could be enhanced with the US on passive patrol and on active alert should intel reveal possible external hostility or local terrorist attack on the country.

    Third, that Subic may expand to house another fleet aside from the 7th Fleet which may then include a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and several nuclear subs.

    The US Bases part of the equation, unfortunately, is no longer a factor.

    Pickering nuclear plant ‘leaked radioactive water’

    MONTREAL (AFP) – Thousands of liters of radioactive water have been released into Lake Ontario as a result of an accident at a Canadian nuclear power plant, according to authorities.

    “The event was a low level regulatory event with only negligible effect to the environment and no public health implications,” Ontario Power said in a statement on Wednesday.

    The power company, which is owned by the Ontario provincial government, said 73,000 liters (19,280 gallons) of radioactive water was released into Lake Ontario from the Pickering Nuclear Station.

    The Pickering nuclear power station, one of five in Canada, is located 35 kilometers (22 miles) east of Toronto, the country’s largest city with 2.6 million inhabitants.

    The company blamed the leak on a faulty pump seal and said it was stopped as soon as it was discovered.

    “From a regulatory perspective, this is a very low-level event. There is no impact to quality of drinking water,” the power company said.

    The Canadian commission on nuclear safety also said the risk to the environment and human health was “negligible.”

    The incident occurred against the backdrop of a nuclear crisis in Japan that has prompted debate in many countries about the safety of nuclear power plants.

    Ganyan din ang epektong galing sa mga thermal power plant na pinatatakbo ng maruming bunker fuel o maging ng diesel.

    Ako ay isang aktibong environmentalist at di gaya ng karamihan sa mga pekeng environmentalists, ang nuclear power para sa akin ay isang “green” source of energy kung ang pagbabatayan ay ang dami ng tao na pinatay ng bawat uri ng power plant. Hindi man pinakasafe gaya ng hydro, wind o solar, ang nuclear pa lamang sa ngayon ang naabot ng isip ng mga siyentipiko, katulong ng mga ekonomista at manufacturing engineers ang pinakamataas na uri ng “energy converter” ayon sa teknikal na kakayahan at episyenteng halaga.

    Bakit energy converter? Kasi ang energy ay hindi kailanman kayang gawin ng tao o makina man. Ang energy ay maari lamang i-convert mula sa isang anyo patungo sa iba gaya ng solar-to-heat-to-electrical, mechanical-to-electrical, sound-to-electrical, vice-versa, etc.

    Ang bawat planta sa buong mundo, para maging economically-viable at competitively-priced, kailangang maibenta lamang sa halagang $0.06 kada Kilowatt. Yan ang dahilan kung bakit hindi maging malawak ang pag-gamit ng solar generator na kasalukuyang nagkakahalaga ng $10.00 per watt. Ang isang energy-independent na bahay na may tamang laki ay gagastos mula kalahati hanggang isang milyon para lamang yan sa solar equipment, di pa natin kinukuwenta ang maintenance at halaga ng real property space na pagtatayuan ng solar collectors natin. Ang payback period para sa ganyang investment ay aabutin ng 60 years kung walang rebate ang gobyerno.

    Huwag muna tayong mangarap ngayon ng mga alternative sources gaya ng tidal, maging ng Tesla coil na pang comicbooks pa rin hanggang ngayon dahil hindi yan kailanman papayagan ng sinumang gobyerno na kasalukuyang tumatamasa ng malaking taxes sa mga hydrocarbon fuels gaya ng oil o coal.

    Yong lahat ng umaasa na pension na galing sa State ay cut-off agad, kasama na rin doon ang county at city o municipal pensions ay cut-off din. Kung ang tinatawag na pension na CCI ay galing sa state ay siguradong cut-off din yon agad. Ang hindi pa maka cut-off sa ngayon ay yong pension na galing sa federal katulad ng SS pension.

    3. Ang presyo ng pagkain ay tataas at ganoon din ang mga gamit katulad ng mga damit at iba pa.

    Years if not decades of complacency gets distorted by mother nature. Panic sets in. Accidents happen, Pinas can be inundated by tsunami tomorrow and get wiped out, and some people might even say “good riddance”.

    Dick Nixon never complained about Nuclear Plant San Onofre knowing it’s nearby his hometown of San Clemente in California. So was Reagan, Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant is closeby his hometown of Santa Barbara.

    Nuclear energy is clean, and if you’re opposed to it; have your electricy shut down if it’s coming from these two plants (those californians).

    Going back to the Nuclear Aircraft Carrier Enterprise, it’s ending a 50 years or so nuclear service for the US military soon with no known accidents and deaths from it’s eight reactors. Been a pleasure to have served onboard the big E.

    Kaya naman ang paliwanag ko ay comparison ng mga namatay sa coal plant versus nuclear plant.

    So far 34 ang direktang namatay sa meltdown sa Chernobyl, lahat sila mga bumberong lumaban sa apoy. Sa 3-Mile – zero. Sa Fukushima – zero pa rin.

    Sa COAL, milyong tao na ang namamatay at nagkasakit/nagkakasakit.

    Kung papipiliin ka sa dalawa lang, saan mo gustong tumira, sa tabi ng Coal Plant o sa tabi ng Nuclear Plant?

    Well, if you consider that in our Province there are 18 nuclear reactors generating about half of the Province electricity requirement of 26000 mW and as I posted, 8 of them just kms and in the area of the most popolous metropolitan of the whole country and they were there for more than 40 years in operation already…(two of them will be decommission in 2012) and so far, there is no evidence that it causes significant increase in rate of cancer incidence…my close friend and relative who worked in the plant as power engineer, contracted Lung Cancer but it was for excessive smoking, not from radiation for more 30 years of working in the plant…and the government is building two more power plants as it scrapped the planned windmill project…there is always the risk, but in a worst case scenario, it is not anyworse than any disaster that occurs naturally every now and then..otherwise we all be packing and move to nuclear free places, like newfoundland or alta (it also is construction its own nuclear plant)well, there is no place where it is free of nuclear power plant anyway…

    And the very good thing about these Nuclear Generators are since that last power outage, that hit the Northeast way back some years ago, this power source is almost fail safe..we have very rare power interruption since then and the rate is still one the cheapest…average rate of 7 cents perkWh can only be possible with Nuclear power..try that with other power source..

  47. Sa coal, magkakasakit ka sa normal na operasyon nito. Sa nuclear magkakasakit ka lang kung merong aksidente.

    Sa tatlong aksidenteng nangyari – 3-Mile, Chernobyl, Fukushima – natukoy na na ang salarin ay ang pagkawala ng power sa mga computer, sensors, actuators, monitors kaya di nila alam ang nangyayari sa loob ng reactor.

    Sa 3-Mile at Chernobyl, nasa kalagitnaan sila ng simulation tests kung saan sinadyang patayin nila ang power sa mga recording/measuring gadgets. Magkakasunod na human error ang tuluyang sumira sa dalawang planta.

    Sa Fukushima, nag-automatic shutdown ang planta nung lumindol kaya nawalan ng power. Merong sanang standby generators na magsu-spply ng power para sa cooldown sequence kaso pati iyon ay sinira ng tsunami.

    Di lang double redundancy o triple redundancy ang solusyon, marami pa. Noong idesign ang Daiichi, hindi nakonsidera ang malakas na tsunaming maaaring sumunod sa lindol.

    Ngayon, mas marami nang natuto kaya isa yang konsiderasyong siguradong ipatutupad ng IAEA sa design, construction, at retrofit ng mga bago at lumang planta.

    Gaya ng marami dito, hindi ako naniniwalang safe pa ang BNPP sa kasalukuyang kundisyon. Maari lamang yang paganahin kung gagastusang muli para masusing irepair o rehab kung kinakailangan. Isa akong masugi na naniniwala sa Murphy’s Law: lahat ng maaring sumablay, sasablay. Mapapayapa lamang ang isang tekniko kung lahat ng sablay ay maitutuwid o maaalis.

    Huwag maging sarado ang utak sa paniniwalang wala namang matibay na basehan sa siyensiya o experience.

    Sabi nga ni juggernaut, superstitious tayo. Natatakot sa bagay na tsismis lang ng kung sinu-sino.

    States like California don’t need or required to file bankruptcy due to: “sovereign immunity, as protected by the 11th Amendment, which means they can’t be sued. In other words, they don’t need any protection from angry creditors who would take them to court for failing to pay their debts.”

    Thanks for the enlightenment. Just goes to show the unfounded paranoia (or plain ignorance) of many as it pertains to the real “green” sources of energy.

    I don’t know if the Walden North Plant is in your province but I’m proud to say that I supervised the manufacture of the relay and control panels costing several millions of C$ that were supposed to be installed there. I was actually preparing for the Canada trip when our Canadian partner backed out of our IPP deal to build a 300-600MW combined-cycle thermal plant in Bauang, La Union in 1992. Legal suits soon followed and we scrapped both deals altogether. The panels were held hostage in our warehouse.

    Suffice it to say, our Pinoy engineers are capable of designing, manufacturing, installing and operating complex electrical equipment using world-class standards (in Walden North’s case, Canada’s CSA and US’ IEEE/NEMA standards).

    It’s disheartening to read self-flagellating comments about our assumed incompetence and that everything Pinoy-made is suspiciously inferior. We’ve never really outgrown our colonial mentality over 400 years. Doubly saddening when you read them from compatriots supposed to be living in modern first world countries.

    GWEN IFILL: And is what we just saw in those pictures, is that what we have here in the United States? Is it the same kind of setup?

    MILES O’BRIEN: Well, basically, our structures are a little beefier than this.
    And one important point which I should tell everybody is that the diesel fuel tanks for the auxiliary generators which keep the water pumping are all buried here in the United States. These tanks were above ground, for reasons that a lot of engineers can’t fully understand.

    This is, after all, a seismically active area, the Ring of Fire. And the Japanese, after all, invented the term tsunami. So, the fact that they had fuel tanks of diesel to run these generators, this last-resort generator, above ground has people mystified.

    GWEN IFILL: One of these reactors went online in 1971. Is the age of the plant significant in this case?

    DAVID BRENNER: I think it is. I think it’s actually key to the — to the whole scenario.
    You know, that’s 40 years ago. The actual lifetime of this reactor was scheduled to be 25 years. And, really, what we see is, as you have just heard, that the backup systems were really not as good as they should have been. And, as time has gone on over the years, the newer plants have better and better and more and more backup systems in place.

    This plant actually had only one backup system, the secondary generators. And when they failed, there was nothing. And that’s not the case with any modern nuclear reactor. So, it is crucial that this was a 1971 machine.

    The report maintains that “The nuclear option should be retained precisely because it is an important carbon-free source of power.”

    “Fossil fuel-based electricity is projected to account for more than 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2020,” said (Dr. John) Deutch.

    “In the U.S. 90% of the carbon emissions from electricity generation come from coal-fired generation, even though this accounts for only 52% of the electricity produced. Taking nuclear power off the table as a viable alternative will prevent the global community from achieving long-term gains in the control of carbon dioxide emissions.”

    “Is it (Mt. Natib) active? Potentially, yes. But within the 60 years during which the plant will operate, the risk of an eruption is very small. Even Phivolcs is not monitoring Mt. Natib,” Arcilla said.

    On the design of the BNPP, Arcilla noted that there were “carbon copies” of the plant operating in Korea and Taiwan since the 1980s without any accident. He also said that nuclear plants were built to withstand earthquakes and that the BNPP was unscathed after the 1990 temblor.

    He said the mothballing of the plant came as a reaction to the meltdown of the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine. But Arcilla said US-designed power plants were far safer than their Russian counterparts.

    He pointed to the Three Mile Island meltdown, where no one died, as proof that safety systems in a plant were effective in controlling a meltdown. “Among all power sources, nuclear power has the lowest rate of accidents,” he said.

    Three-Mile was by Babcock and Wilcox, Fukushima by General Electric. Chernobyl was Ukranian/Russian.

    Exactly. You provide people with a better alternative and in return, you become suspect for your motives.

    Such a selfish mindset has no place in the Globalized Neighborhood. In-the-box thinking limits their choice to mere preservation the status quo and no serious attempt to modernize and stay abreast with the rest of the economic giants by playing the major league.

    But no, we are contented in our own little barangay intramurals and will not dare take the necessary risks everybody else around us is taking. Here, mavericks are frowned upon, innovators are criticized, and inventors (like Dingle and his water-fueled car) are treated as lunatics. Those who are strong-willed enough to jumpstart their projects are suddenly barred by locals whose “not-in-my-backyard” approach to every technological breakthrough soon loses the appetite for providing solutions.

    We are not lacking in human intelligence when it comes to technology-based products and processes, almost all top research institutions worldwide have Pinoys among their cream. It’s just that people will believe the likes of a Sharon Cuneta, the local parish priest, or the corrupt mayor over a MIT-trained technocrat who talks textbook jargon and possesses no charisma at all. Mining is bad. Nuclear is bad. GMO is bad. Stem-cell harvesting is bad. Yeah, everything new is bad. But these are the very same people clamoring for CHANGE.

    Add a sprinkle of superstition here and there and the project is forever doomed. Never mind the economic benefits and the long term outlook for a more sustainable human-friendly planet for generations to come. What is important to them is the here and now.

    After all that’s been said about this subject matter, may I suggest that all those who want to have a nuclear plant should transfer their abode within a 10 km area of the plant.

    God, we can’t even run our Bicol Express and MRT/LRT trains. Nuclear plant pa kaya. We can’t even put order and safety in that one stretch of a historical highway that is EDSA.

    Unless this country shows a high level of discipline and integrity and rejects shortcuts and corruption, nuclear facilities are too risky.

    Because of our geographic location and being in the same archipelago where there is too much tectonic and volcanic activities, the hazards outwiegh the benefits. If we were in a zone where we need a lot of fuel to warm us (like countries with winter) or cool us (desert countries with so much heat) then we should seriously think about a nuclear plant. But we are so blessed with good overall temperature. We too have alternative sources of energy. We just have to harness these. Too risky to open this plant when it is too close to a volcano that is much larger that Mt Pinatubo.

    When the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, did it affect Osaka? Osaka is about the same distance from Hiroshima as Fukushima is from Tokyo. We’re talking weapons grade radiation here, which immediately killed 70,000 to 80,000 people.

    The impact of the bomb was felt within a 10 km radius from Hiroshima. Ganyan din ang Chernobyl, limited to 30 km ang radius of impact. Here is a comparison of Chernobyl versus other nuclear accidents, and Hiroshima:

    Sax and Tongue, I am not opposed to nuclear energy kaya nga lang itong isang ipinatayo na ito, masyadong malapit sa known fault and a large volcano. Yung ngang eruption ng Mt Pinatubo nakarating ang ashes sa New York eh. Eh kung mag-erupt itong isang malaking volcano na malapit sa existing nuclear plant na ito, hindi lang double kundi triple tragedy: earthquake, tsunami and volcano explosion. If we are trying to use this existing structure na ito na hindi masyadong napagaralan ang sitedelikado. We might as well build a better one, may be more expensive but in a safer area. All the data we have on these tectonic, volcanic and geologic mapping were all started only 30 years or so ago. This Marcos built nuclear plant was erected just about that time. Therefore, the site was not really studied well yet when it was erected. This is just my concern. Nagtitipid tayo but the repurcussions on the lives and properties may outweigh the benefit we can get by utilizing this existing plant. Kung hindi ninanakaw ang pera ng kaban ng bayan in the past 25 or more years, kahit na siguro tatlong nuclear plant, we can easily build. Ang issue ay palaging pera but the real issue is really the misused resources.

    Why wont Pnoy have the site and the structure re-evaluated not by our own scientists and technical men but those who have worked on installing the most nuclear plants in the world and are capable to maintain them. I wont depend on a UP or MIT or any top shot scientist ( Although we had produced a lot of good ones working for NASA and the like)if they had no exposure to the actual operation of one nuclear plant. I will consult with the ones who built the US, Russia and Japanese nuclear plants. If they say the current nuclear plant built by Marcos is safe and sound with a few retrofit works, I will believe them. Marami na tayong nasayang na oras sa haka haka natin. Pay a professional to tell us what to do. I am not belittling our capabilities to assess the risk factor. Wala lang tayo talagang actual experiences to run even just ONE nuclear plant.

    There are things that first world countries can do because they have the resources and MATURITY to handle the offshoot of whatever negative impact it may have on their citizens and properties. Tayo, walang wala. Walang resources wala pang maturity. And most of our decision makers are not really those I would say are “trustworthy”.     Hindi hakahaka yung akin PSB, this is first-hand experience speaking to you (limited to documentation, though). If the BNPP files have not been taken from my custody, I assure you, you would have known first hand the details of ALL pre-construction studies. We paid American and Japanese engineers and scientists in millions of dollars precisely to come up with the best site for the complex. If I remember right, it was the USS Engineers, Inc. that spearheaded the study. And if you think that study was final, you’re wrong again.

    Politics had little to do with the plant, maybe the overprice and some issues with the US bases and that’s it. It was purely a technical/scientific affair. Hands-off ang politiko diyan.

  78. If you believe all the negative propaganda about BNPP. Westinghouse would have gone out of business thirty years ago. They have sold almost all their other businesses to the Germans, Swedes, and Australians and retained ONLY their nuclear plant division (now owned by Toshiba)which still builds plants, some very similar to ours, to this day. South Korea for one, is pursuing 12 more nuclear plants, one going online every year starting 2013.

    C’mon, do you think they would risk losing all these nuclear business worth Billions by doing haphazard construction in Bataan, if we were to believe the critics? Just to make sure the job was credible (owing to our colonial mentality) we had to pay dearly for more “white” supervisors just to make sure “everyone saw” that they were with us every step of the way. And we blame that on Marcos.

    BTW, Aside from the Nuclear Division, Westinghouse has also retained their cartoon franchise business (Under CBS corp.)- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – among others. I’m not sure if these are still accurate, as we’ve given up Westinghouse after the sale to Siemens, ABB, EmWest, etc and we began representing G.E. & Eaton starting Y2K.

    So, volatile radioactive elements are already being lofted into the jet stream and spread across continents. What’s different here is that the quantities are much larger than they were at Chernobyl, thus, the dangers are far greater. According to the same group of scientists “the Fukushima plant has around 1760 tonnes of fresh and used nuclear fuel on site” (while) “the Chernobyl reactor had only 180 tonnes.”

    Spent fuel rods from each unit of the Fukushima plant are releasing the equivalent of 92,000 nuclear bombs,…

    Each unit has 400 assemblies of spent fuel rods, with 60 spent fuel rod for each assembly. Each individual rod holds 72 pounds uranium, as opposed to a 20-pound uranium payload for a nuclear bomb.

    This radiation from 4 units time 92,000 nuclear bombs is now being released into the troposphere, and traveling at below 300 feet altitude over Japan and the western United States.

    Just came back from a weeklong vacation in Honolulu, and anti-nuclear activists seemed to have the upper hand when the issue of building a nuclear plant was again raised and doomed by the Japan crisis.

    Wifey grew up in Honolulu in the 60’s, and it’s waters/beaches are still beautiful as ever. Do I blame the majority who opposes a nuclear plant in the state? Simply no, because of the horrible photos of the damaged nuclear plants they’ve seen in Japan and destroyed their good ways of lives. These horrific scenes are always in the back of most hawaiian citizens and don’t want a part of that, damaging their beautiful state.

    But wait! Some of these anti-nuclear energy freaks must be reminded that only 13 miles away is Pearl Harbor and Submarine Base Hawaii; where a few SSBN’s are homeported. These subs are quietly sitting there; quietly go out for several months and return after their patrols – no accidents whatsoever or leaks, and Hawaii is still pretty.

    I’d like, in my lifetime, to see mother earth ran out of oil completely…now what?
