  4. Lurker Lurker

Wala tayong maaasahan sa mga pulis, Ellen. Buti na lamang hindi ka nasaktan. “Charge it to experience,” na lang. Regards!

  5. parasabayan parasabayan

Mabuti na lang hindi ka nasaktan.

I usually do not wear “tunay” unless I attend a wedding in a hotel or baptism or a formal dining. I had several snatching and hold up experiences, even at gun point.

  6. beach_boi beach_boi

Ellen, my niece was also a victim…necklace naman ang nadali.

Pag-uwi, Joe texted him with his full name, will deliver me na daw… hahaha!

Nakakatakot talaga!

  12. QED QED

Oh Ellen, I’m so sorry to hear about this unfortunate event. Extra care next time. Reminds me of my bus trips to Quiapo when I was still studying. This country we live in…

Ano ba yun?

  14. My niece got held up last week also in Cebu, the hold upper took her cell phone, laptop, wallet, good thing she had jeepney fare in her pocket. A few months back I lost two side mirrors.
These kind of things happen here, in India, the US, its everywhere, the Philippines does not have a monopoly of criminality. Lets just write these off as involuntary donations to the poor and desperate, may this sacrifice on our part help them in their hour of need.

  15. QED QED

#15 juggernaut, im sorry to have to point this out, but im uncomfortable with the “donation to the poor and desperate bit.” being robbed does nothing to address the systemic problem of poverty in our country. moreover, i sense unchecked elitism in how “we” dichotomize ourselves from the poor who need our help.

  16. VIRAC, Catanduanes—Filipino-German rapper Kay One, number one in Europe, had been in his mother’s country barely two days when he had a couple of experiences he won’t soon forget.

Now in this his mother Anne’s hometown, six-foot Kenneth Glöckler, 27, told the Inquirer about fighting off two holdup men near the five-star Makati hotel he was billeted at after arriving in the country on August 11.

They got nothing though as the six-foot blond Filipino-German nearly broke the jaw of one of them and gave a shiner to the other, leaving them crying in pain on the pavement two blocks from the Dusit Thani hotel.

On the street outside the hotel, he said a thin man came up to him and asked if he wanted a girl. When he said no, the man continued to follow him and was joined by another man, who also asked if he wanted a girl.

He turned into a street from which he could see a wide avenue but before he could get there, one of the men tried to reach into his pocket. He turned around and punched the man in the jaw, sending him down.

The other guy kicked him and pulled out a switchblade, swinging the knife at Kay One but missing. The Fil-German decked him with a punch to the left eye.

MPD to rid Manila streets of young thieves
    By Jeannette I. Andrade
    Philippine Daily Inquirer

With the Manila Police District (MPD) still haunted by last year’s tragic Quirino Grandstand hostage taking incident, the MPD kicked off Saturday an intensified campaign to rid the city’s streets of juvenile thieves and beggars victimizing foreigners….

Margarejo pointed out that the campaign was launched following reports of foreigners being victimized by underage thieves posing as beggars.

“They (juvenile beggars) swarm tourists, asking for alms and then steal from them. Either pick their pockets or snatch their belongings. This has happened several times and we want to put a stop to this,” he said.

    http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/45091/mpd-to-rid-manila-streets-of-young-thieves

  18. Many years ago, I was a victim of a pickpocket in Ermita. My bag was slashed and the thief got my wallet (with my atm card, credit card, ID’s) my airline ticket and my passport (I was going to Hongkong with a friend).

I reported it to the police because I wanted to recover my things. They showed me photos and asked me to identify the thief. How would I know his face? I only saw his back.

    Nothing happened.

  19. If you are really serious in recovering things stolen from you, just tell the cops. They have usual suspects, or “favorites” who will return everything within a certain window of time. Most especially along Taft Ave., from Baclaran all the way to Monumento through Avenida, the “merchandise” are initially pawned to financiers who pay the full price later on if no one claims ownership.

We were watching these “auction sessions” from a restaurant window in Ongpin, where men in bicycles arrive one after another, carrying ladies’ bags, cellphones, watches, necklaces and other jewelry and they were doing it right before the noses of cops tasked to secure the Chinatown businessmen.

  20. From Niel Lim, posted in FB:

  21. Police reporters told me when the police asks the victim for description of the thief, it’s not really to get back the stolen items. It’s to get his share of the loot. Anu ba yan?

  22. It’s about time Pangilinan’s law on juvenile offenders be repealed. It’s the most idiotic law that was crafted based on emotions, without the benefit of science.

Which of course, is very Pangilinan – all stupid emotions and no scientific substance.

One time, kids as young as 12 scaled our garage and stole a washing machine. Of course, the Tanods have their “usual suspects”, they picked them up and the kids readily admitted. The appliance was returned.

The delinquents? They got a one-hour seminar from a DSWD social worker and were even given a free ride home after a burger meal at Jollibee.

    Sarap pala maging magnanakaw!

  23. Police reporters told me when the police asks the victim for description of the thief, it’s not really to get back the stolen items. It’s to get his share of the loot. – ellen

That’s also true. Kaya you start from the top.

  24. I didn’t bother to go to the police anymore. Nadala na ako after that experience with the pickpocket many years ago.

  25. chi chi

#22. I’m not all surprised why Pangilinan went with election dayaan 2004 by his “noted”, tagapagtaggol sya ng mga magnanakaw!

Third time na mahuli, kalaboso up to a month.

    Stupid Pangilinan law!

  26. QED,
If you’ve ever tried going to the police after being robbed, you’ll probably understand, there is no elitism bs here just reality. If we read all experiences and all postings here the bottomline will always be the same – at the moment there is nothing we can do. So you can rant all you want, cry if you want to, but it won’t change a thing.
We just have to deal with it as best we can, and starting with how we shake off the traumatic experience is the first thing, some people get mad, some people get even, I just try to look at the bright side. I say to the snatcher, take it, take it, you need it more than I do.
So before you dichotomize anything, start with your gluteus maximus.

  27. There are worst things to we can lose, life, limb, health, its best not to get too attached to material things.

  28. perl perl

  29. florry florry

Now I can take pride and boast to my husband that being a victim of snatchers is not “katangahan”. I’ve been called “para ka namang tanga” and I grudgingly agree because I lost a bracelet and a ring in one swoop and in just one swift act of a pro snatcher.

We were crossing the street in a pedestrian lane with my sister in law in Aurora Blvd. in Cubao when a man coming from the opposite side came directly at me, casually took the shopping bag from my left hand as if he is about to help, but in a very short while put it back and went straight to the other side. I thought my sister in law knew him because he even said “hi”. Reaching the other side of the street, I realized that my bracelet and ring were gone, and so was the man. It happened so fast and it’s really unbelievable. It’s the most bizarre experience that I will never forget.

Reporting to the police doesn’t help. It’s true and I believe that those men in uniform assigned in those areas are only interested in their share of the loot and not to apprehend them.

Way back in college my friend beat up 2 snatchers as they tried to grab the necklace of her girlfriend, pinahuli pa sa police, after that was a nightmare, the way to our universiity was not safe for him anymore as the snatchers’ gang were going after him, his black belt didn’t make him any safer, he had to transfer to Bacolod to finish. I ‘ve called in the SOCO twice already after thieves broke in the house, they did the usual dusting for fingerprints ala half assed CSI but nothing came put of it, lumipat na lang kami ng dalawang beses din. It was strange when I talked to the barangay captain, he told me I should’ve given the police money “pasimple lang” and I was sure to get back my things. He said that the police in a certain area know who these people are and even where they sell their stolen goods.

  32. QED QED

“So before you dichotomize anything, start with your gluteus maximus.” – juggetnaut

    Seriously???

  33. florry florry

“These kind of things happen here, in India, the US, its everywhere, the Philippines does not have a monopoly of criminality”.
    ———————————————————–
Is it because other countries are having problems with criminality mean that it’s OK for the country to have the same kind of problems?

Let’s not console ourselves and find comfort in knowing and acknowledging that criminality is not a monopoly of the Philippines. That’s a very defeatist attitude.

Why settle for the second, third best if you have the chance to improve to be the best of the best?

All countries including the Philippines have a lot of room for improvement in keeping the peace and order situation, unless of course if you are willing to accept that the Philippine authorities are a bunch of useless and inutile force to enforce the rule of law and peace and order.

  34. florry,
I’ve tried, believe me, I’ve tried. Kulang na lang pagpapatayin ko mga yan, I carry a gun with me.
I confronted a suspect, brought him to the barangay, no proof, he gets off, and what do I get after? All four tires of my car get slashed. Days after that, a window gets broken, so what can I do? Move to another place, a safer one. Its getting to be like a game governed by probability, some are lucky (or not) some are not as lucky. Some of us will breeze through life without getting robbed, some will. I really hope I don’t get into a situation when I have to shoot someone, so I just move to a different place if I can.

  35. Governments, cities, are doing something about the criminality, but its a race between effectively minimizing it or totally eradicating it and the increase of criminality. In the meantime, we can complain all we want, say so many heroic things, demand, etc, or shoot them on sight, whatever. Bottomline, we wait, no matter what our reactions are, we still wait. Or we stop expecting and move on, look for safer places, double, triple locks, install better alarms, choose plumbers, carpenters, electricians wisely before allowing them in the house, get a security mindset, to keep our families and property safe while the authorities are playing cat and mouse games.

  36. So some of us support foundations, NGOs, to get some kids in school, not because we really wanted to help – deep down we hope that for each kid we send to school we take away a potential akyat bahay, a potential snatcher, a potential mugger that may stab our unsuspecting children someday. If you want to do something along those lines just click my name.

  37. QED QED

There is a symptomatic approach to addressing poverty/crime: be careful, bring a gun (tbh, i do not understand guns), confront the snatcher, report to the police/tanod, install additional locks on the door, etc. This approach will solve the problem to a certain extent.

On the other hand, we can elevate the discourse and address the system that indirectly encourages/necessitates crime. By way of an indirect “for example”, this question: is it some miraculous coincidence that countries with high level of social justice, transparency, and development have lower crime rates? We do not aim to become a utopian society overnight, but it is another matter totally if the irregularities in society (the aforementioned crime, poverty, etc) are direct and inherent functions of our socio/political structure.

  38. QED,
I admire your faith in our system, i wish I had even half of it. I want to subscribe to what you just posted, honestly, I do, since you brought it up, a little bit of faith is restored.
Personally, I have almost given up on our generation, too old, too set in their ways to change, too proud, too much to lose. I prefer to put my stock in the next generation, while they are still young, lets give equip them with the tools ie education, values, hope, etc., that will help them make the right choices/decisions later on.
I can only hope and pray that the national government via the DILG will improve transparency, accountability, professionalism, among its ranks and reflect changes in society.
But these are things we have no direct control of, we can only demand from authorities its up to them in the end. We do however, have other options beyond hoping, we can make some changes, but it takes more than just discussions.

  39. If you were told by someone in authority (advised pala) to pay the police money “pasimple” so you can get your things back and that they (police) know who these people are, you’d get cynical too. The way I see it the cops have developed a longer relationship with these perpetrators, baka nag kainuman pa?

  40. QED QED

    juggernaut,
it is precisely our system that i have no hope for, at least in its present form. what i have, however, is abundant hope for the agency of creative/progressive/awesome individuals who inspire and initiate collective action to make life worth living. 🙂

  41. From Tessie Ang Sy:

  42. vic vic

This type of crime happens everywhere…my own sis was walking home from the mall, just a block away when a teenager snatched her bag and they had a tug war and she lost since she is already a senior citizen…told her to call the cops and I immediately look around to try to find the snatcher just across the street where he run…come back home the cop already interviewing my sister and told us he has some Idea who the snatcher is by the description and he is an in and out the jail..he is going to pick him up for interview…I just took the .45 auto out of my waist and put it back in the vault..sometimes in the heat of the moment, we tend to take the law into our hands.

  43. Mike Mike

My friend’s 16 year old (then) son got held up along in La Salle Taft few years back. He was waiting for his ride when 2 guys casually walk up to him, one of them placing his arm on is shoulder. He then felt something he thought was a knife or ice pick on his side. The man told him to give him his cellphone and wallet if he doesn’t want to get hurt. He had no choice but to give in. Poor boy literally peed on his pants. 🙁

  44. Mike Mike

I used to see a lite-ace van dropping off several street children along Taft (a few blocks from NBI). I wonder if these kids were used by these syndicates to rob people or ask for alms??? Hmmmm…
