An afternoon of Laughter Yoga

This was not the Laughter Yoga session. But we were laughing and having a good time.
I came across two articles on the benefits of laughter last week.

One was through e-mail about a study conducted by the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine which was presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Paris last August 28.

The article written by Rick Nauert PhD, senior news editor of psychcentral.com, it said volunteers watched segments of a funny movie, such as “There’s Something About Mary” on one day and on another day watched the violent opening segment of the stressful movie “Saving Private Ryan.”

The study revealed that when volunteers watched “Saving Private Ryan,”, their blood vessel lining developed a potentially unhealthy response called vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow. “This finding confirms previous studies, which suggested there was a link between mental stress and the narrowing of blood vessels,” the article said.

“The magnitude of change we saw in the endothelium (or inner cell wall of a blood vessel), after laughing was consistent and similar to the benefit we might see with aerobic exercise or statin use,” said Dr. Michael Miller, the lead investigator.

The article said “The endothelium has a powerful effect on blood vessel tone and regulates blood flow, adjusts coagulation and blood thickening, and produces chemicals in response to injury and inflammation. .. It is the first line in the development of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, so it is very possible that laughing on a regular basis may be useful to incorporate as part of an overall healthy lifestyle to prevent heart disease.”

Another report by Agence France Presse datelined Paris showed that a study by the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Oxford showed that 15 minutes of laughter increased the level of pain tolerance of a person by around ten percent.
Robin Dunbar, head of the Institute said the protection apparently comes from endorphins, a complex chemical that helps to transmit messages between neurons but also dulls signals of physical pain and psychological stress.

“Endorphins are the famous product of physical exercise—they help create the “buzz” that comes from running, swimming, rowing, yoga and so on,” the article said.

“In laughter, the release comes from an involuntary, repeated muscular exertion that comes from exhaling without drawing a breath, the scientists believe. The exertion leaves us exhausted and thereby triggers the endorphins,” the article further said.

Endorphins are believed to be anti-cancer.

I had an endorphin-producing session last week when I was introduced to Laughter Yoga.

My friend, Marilen Romero, has a friend, Leah Siton Steigerwald, her classmate at the UP College of Law, who took up instructor’s course of Laughter Yoga in London and was interested to share her knowledge with others.

Off we went to Leah’s Forbes Park home.

That where I learned that Laughter Yoga was the brainchild of Dr. Madan Kataria, a physician from Mumbai, India.

It’s a revolutionary exercise based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter. One gets the same physiological and psychological benefits.

The first thing that Leah taught us was how to breathe properly (through the nose). We thought of different situations, even the most trivial, then laughed about it.

What Leah discouraged was laughing at other people’s physical defects or misery. That’s not funny at all.

In every routine, we established eye contact with others and the laughter became contagious. After 20 minutes, we were all sweating.

Dr. Kataria launched Laughter Yoga in 1995 with a handful of friends in a park in Mumbai. There are now thousands of Laughter Yoga Clubs all over the world. It is also being used in hospitals because as the University of Oxford study said, laughter is effective in reducing pain.

While scientists dissect the secret of laughter, my unscientific mind tells me laughter is a manifestation of positive attitude in dealing with life, both its travails and joys. Indeed, laughter is the best medicine and it doesn’t cost a cent. Hahahahaha!

Laughter’s been saving us Filipinos throughout these years. Hahaha!

  2. I’m glad you found time for this exercise Ellen. Is this the one with so many “chakras” and different levels of laughter?
I’m following your lead, I’m going to watch comedies, after reading your post, I’ve lined up Ang Babae sa Septic Tank ( the actress in Kimidora), Hangover2, I’m still looking for other funny movies, any suggestions?

  3. tru blue tru blue

Benny Hill, at one time number ONE comic in Great Britain died early. Just watch your diets and you’ll live longer with regular excercie.

Jug: watch “Let it Ride”,it’s my all time comedy film and actually dramatizes real events. Am sure TT saw this flick.

  4. Unfortunately an endorphin rush can also be induced with drugs like ecstacy. Then again, it sounds stupid, why spend so much to get the same effect with free laughter, wala pang side effect? 🙂

  5. tru blu,
Hey I watched The Benny Hill shows a long time ago, I could still hear the funny music in my head until now. I agree with what you said with diet and exercise, medyo nahihirapan na lang ako ngayon, wala na akong disiplina. I’ll check out Lets Ride, god knows we need to laugh nowadays, its been quite stressful.

  7. MPRivera MPRivera

“…..“Endorphins are the famous product of physical exercise—they help create the “buzz” that comes from running, swimming, rowing, yoga and so on,” the article said….”

Hahahaha!!!

Ano kaya depresnya ng laughter elicited from a yoga session from an extemporaneous/offhand one? Which is more effective as a medicine? 🙂

  13. chi chi

I don’t watch drama and tragedy movies, peborit ko comedy, western at zombies (this one makes me laugh harder). Sa TV shows I go for the Big Bang Theory, love Jim Parson comedic style.

I still have to watch it.

  16. chi chi

Totoo palang meron sine ni jug, hahaha! ‘kala ko joke lang. 🙂

Back to back ata ito. Katatapos niyo pa lang pagpiyestahan yung “samtayms wen we tats, di anisti’s tu mats”. Ngayon naman, laughter yoga.

May bagong kanta daw si Pacquiao, yung “Tats mi in da murning”.

“Ano kaya depresnya ng laughter elicited from a yoga session from an extemporaneous/offhand one? Which is more effective as a medicine?” – chi

  22. tru blue,
napanood ko nga yang Let It Ride.

Tanda ko ito mga late 80s o early 90s kasi two weeks later mapanood ko, out of 12 daily doubles, I won in 8, lahat dehado! Bumabaha ng beer at pulutan sa private room namin sa San Lazaro (Araw ng Maynila Stakes Race was traditionally dehadista day) and I didn’t even spend P200 on my first bet.

  23. Suffice it to say, here in ellenville, we survived nine long years of political abuse with humor therapy.

  24. tru blue tru blue

@24: In hindsight, would Robin Williams been better than Richard Dreyfuss in that movie? I struggled with that notion, but hell it’s now a classic movie despised by the rich.

If you just love comedies of any genres, the best for me is “Hogan’s Heroes”. Give Sargent Schultz something good to eat and in return, he’ll let you hold his rifle while he savors his goodies…..stalag 13, best prison camp ever, wink!

  25. MPRivera MPRivera

Paborito kong local comedy shows of all time? Bubble Gang, Bad Bananas, Cafeteria Aroma at Buhay Artista.

  28. OT: Gerry’s Grill sets foray into Middle East – Malaya

  29. tru blue tru blue

Who gives a carabao’s ass if jokes are foreign or not; basta it’s humorous, enjoy the heck out of it. Here’s some
    that are real funny:

Filipino Chinese born during blackout, wala law ilaw; his father named him – Andy Lim

Another one born blind – his name is Kenneth Sy

    Some interesting anagrams:

GEORGE BUSH – He bugs Gore

Following are for the previous regime of Goyang:

ELECTION RESULTS – Lies, let’s recount

DESPERATION – A rope ends it

    BEST IN PRAYERS – Presbyterian

    THE EYES – They see

  30. Did you watch “Burn after reading” starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich, et al? Tawa din ako ng tawa doon.

  31. MPRivera MPRivera

  32. chi chi

#33. Yes, I watched “Burn after reading” and considered it to be one of the funniest in recent years. Pitt’s best too, hehehe!

  33. MPRivera MPRivera

    tsk. tsk. tsk.

ganyan naman talaga ang mga seriuos actors. mas effective silang comedian because that was leat expected of them.

sa pinoys di ba epektibong komedyante si eddie garcia? he’s an actor in its real sense.

  34. MPRivera MPRivera

    …least expected….

    bulol na naman!
