Corona’s latest offer: I’ll resign but I keep everything I have

Unfriendly meeting
I find the revelations of Chief Justice Renato Corona of the meetings that he had with President Aquino and other administration stalwarts very interesting. I just wish that he tells the complete story and not just be selective in his sharing with the public.

I also expect the same from Malacañang.

Corona disclosed the proposal of administration ally Sen. Teofisto Guingona for a term sharing with Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, which Guingona denies.

He should also disclose his counter-offers especially the latest ,made through a retired associate justice , that he was willing to resign on condition that he would keep everything that he owns now.
What Corona has only disclosed were his meetings with President Aquino and the Guingonas, father and son.

The Aquino-Corona meeting has been confirmed by Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda. It took place in July 2010, a few weeks after the latter was sworn into office by Associate Justice Conchita Carpio-Morales, in the house of the President’s sister, Pinky Abellada.

It’s only now that we are learning that despite the inaugural snub, Aquino met with Corona in private. Corona said Aquino was not friendly with him during the meeting which was arranged by former Associate Justice Antonio Nachura, a member of the Liberal Party, the administration party.

Corona said Aquino talked to him about the Truth Commission that he was creating to investigate “some personalities.” Gloria Arroyo. He said he advised Aquino that the Commission should not target specific personalities which Aquino didn’t heed because it specified in his Executive Order graft and corruption under the Arroyo administration.

As expected, the Corona Court declared the Truth Commission unconstitutional.

Lacierda disputed Corona’s version of the lunch meeting saying that the President just asked Corona if they can expect fairness from him. Corona, according to Lacierda, assured them, “We will render decisions based on fairness and legal precepts.”

The meeting with the Guingonas took place late last year before the House of Representatives impeached the Chief Justice in December. It was held in the older Guingona’s residence in New Manila, Quezon City.

Corona was Sen. TG’s professor in Ateneo law School while the chief justice former senator Teofisto Guingona, Jr were both members of the Ramos cabinet.

Corona, who is retiring on Oct. 14, 2018, says Sen. TG raised the idea of his term-sharing with Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, who is retiring on Oct. 25, 2019.

Corona said he rejected the idea right away because it was not “legally possible” as he was appointed to a specific term.

He said the younger Guingona immediately dropped the subject.

Sen. TG denies ever having raised the idea of term sharing and said the conversation was just, “a hi, hello, how are you.”

At the start of the impeachment trial, Corona said he will not give Aquino the pleasure of his resignation.

That was before Enriqueta Vidal, the SC clerk of court, turned over to the impeachment court the chief justice’s Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth.

That was before documents of his bank deposits submitted as evidence in the impeachment court showed huge amounts that were not reported in his SALN.

Reliable sources said even as Corona was going on an offensive, he has asked another retired SC justice (not Nachura)to relay a message to Malacañang that we might consider resigning if he would be allowed to name his successor. Malacañang, we were told, said “No way.”

Corona’s latest offer, our source said, was he is willing to resign on condition that he keeps everything that he has now.

It’s still “No way” from Malacañang.

Ano siya, sinuswerte?

This deplorable persona must resign. He must have the courage to admit that he has no business sitting as Supreme Court chief justice. We’ve just about had it with his vaudeville show. He is not an elected official and therefore has no right to act as if he were a politician.

The earlier he leaves the judiciary, the better it will be for the Philippines. He and his patron, Her Pandakship, Gloria Macapagal, have crapped on the Philippines more than the county could bear. Time for him to retire and to face the music.

  2. Lurker Lurker

He resigns and keeps his ill-gotten stash? NOY way!

  3. parasabayan parasabayan

At this point in time, Corona has no bargaining power! He dug himself in a hole he can never get out of!

This guy wants his cake and eats it too!

  4. parasabayan parasabayan

Granting the senate acquits him, Pnoy will run after every penny he illegally obtained. Walang lusot si Corona!

He had all the opportunity to resign but he gambled. Akala kasi niya hindi lalabas yung SALN niya and all his bank acounts wont be uncovered. Well, he is DEAD WRONG! I have no sympathy for this man who enriched himself and has so much arrogance!

  5. parasabayan parasabayan

The comments of the Basa family burried him even more! Kung sakali man at maging bulag ang walong senators and Corona get acquitted, Corona will be an “inutil” Chief Justice. He will be hounded left and right on the abuses he did over the years.

Ang dami pang satsat ni Corona. Mag RESIGN ka na lang.

And I would believe that the one and only Revenue chief Kim Henares is on the busy working for Corona next appointment with his destiny before his next destination, to his former peer in Ombuds Carpio Morales for some issues to face…he must have to join his Madame and friends, GMA, Benjei and be followed by others…

The nerve !!! Ano ito, another (ex-Gen) Carlos Garcia “wheeling-dealing” in the making ?
Either saksakan ka ng bobo or you are so desperate you want to run with the loot just because you said “mea culpa”.
Well guess what…….that is going to happen anytime soon !
Tell you what,….how about you resign, plead guilty, get to be Gen Garcia’s cellmate at Muntinglupa, and you also get nothing !! How about that, Mr. Midnight Appointee ?

Assuming the tsismis are indeed true, then let us hope the senators do indeed get to convict Corona and then we dig this guy, dig like he was equal if not worst than GMA.

Dapat nga masampulan itong mga tulad nyan.

I think the man is on the edge of his cliff. He is desperate. He is groping for straws. If he does an Angelo Reyes, blame should again go to those two malevolent spirits that previously occupied Malacanang.

Bakit niya sasabihin na ” I keep Everyhing”.

This guy the Thief Justice has no delikadesa in the first place, kaya kahit lahat ng nakulimbat nya ay gusto nya mapasakanya. He thought he was above the law.

It gives meaning to the phrase “Hudlums in Robes” ganon ang kanilang Thief Justice Renato Corona.

I’m awaiting the day that he will be stripped off his title as CJ, because he is a Big Disgrace sa Supreme Court.

  28. saxnviolins saxnviolins

    Karamihan dito nakapagpasya na.

I am still willing to listen to the defense evidence. There may be a genuine explanation of the wealth; or it could be mere palusot. But I will give the matter not Corona, the opportunity.

I choose to do this, not because Corona deserves it, but in order to give the system a chance. We have been attempting to build institutions since 1898. That system requires that we allow the decision-maker to render a decision. In this case, the Constitution reposed the decision-making in the Senate.

Kung makikialam, and we kibbitz, that means we do not trust the people we put in office. Para que pang nag-election? The people trust Noy more than the senators? Fine. Then amend the Constitution and put the decision-making power in the Executive. But what if we have another Goyang? Oops, then amend the Constitution again, and locate the power back in the Senate.

See the yo-yo effect when we trust people instead of building systems and trusting systems?

Pero malakas daw ang clamor. The surveys and all, attest to that.

Do we trust the noisy people more than the ballot? Di ba galing na tayo diyan? The ballot chose Erap. The noisy people chose Goyang.

The rest, as the say, is infamy.

The ballot (ratification) gave the decision-making power to the Senate. The ballot also chose the current senators. The ballot did choose Noy, but for a different power.

So shut up muna kayo, Noy, Lacierda, Valte, at ang mga magagaling na maiingay.

  29. vic vic

of course with the above convincing argument of saxnviolin, the process must be undertaken…even if we the observers ont the side already made up our own judgement…
At this very instance..a jury trial of a murder of an 8 year old 3 years ago in ongoing in the court in Ontario…the partner in the crime already pleaded guilty to the crime of 1st degree murder and it is automatic life sentence and she will be a crown witness against her boyfriend accused of rape, abduction and murder in 1st degree..the trial is expected to last 3 months and the lawyer representing th accused is telling the public not to rush to judgement as the truth to the case will be unravelled during the Trial…and the whole country still willing to hear the evidence of the gruesome murder of an 8 year in her first Solo walk home from School..

Siguro SNV, paki sabihan din si Chief to shut up!

  31. parasabayan parasabayan

SNV, I was with you on listening first but I am amazed at how Corona amassed those miliions baka billions pa if his dollar accounts are included! I am also appalled on the things he allegedly did to the family of his wife. Naging bully siya ni Tina! Is this how a Chief Justice should be?

Although it is true that maybe at the beginning the prosecution did not really have all the documents ready and had not solidly put the articles together, the uncovered loot, undeclared assets and now all these revelations of his conduct to the Basa family makes me believe that Corona is not really fit to be the chief magistrate. Kung haka haka lang, that is different. But all the bank accounts (in peso at least) were uncovered. The nun relative of the wife has come out to tell the world how they were treated by Corona. Now these are damaging information. If you tell me to listen to the hearings to way the other side before forming my mind on his guilt, medyo malabo na. The overwhelming evidences buried Corona alive!

  32. parasabayan parasabayan

Moreover, Tiongco, the first witness seemed to be doing the act because he did not get his pork barrel on time! DUH! He hurt Corona’s case more than it helped.

  33. Tedanz Tedanz

The issue in an impeachment involves acts or omissions by the Respondent, as an official. It never is about character. There is no case, whether criminal, civil, administrative, or even student discipline, which is about character. That is how you know that Tupas has no litigation experience.

The only basis for any decision is whether or not the acts or omissions alleged have been proven – SALN, etc; and whether or not they amount to (1) culpable violation of the Constitution, 2) high crimes, or (3) betrayal of public trust (Bernas says, while in the performance of duty, in other words, while rendering a decision).

Pang show biz yang rebuttal evidence ni Tupas.

He talks about some incident in 1983, about Corona’s gun-toting. The year 1983? Teenager pa si Tupas noon. How is that germane to acts or omissions that occurred more than twenty years later?

Show biz lang?

Sa nakatatanda, LVN pictures was the MGM of the Philippines, noong panahon nila Susan Roces.

  37. parasabayan parasabayan

Sax, I do not have a legal background but I know how to judge character. If indeed Corona did these things the Basa family alleges, wala pa siya noon sa pwestong mataas. How much more now that he has the highest judicial position? Halos kasing taas ni Pnoy and position niya. Corona has to be HOLLIER THAN THOU to be the final judge on the crimes of the people. But if he himself have had criminal acts and were not caught then, he then became a MONSTER later. I hope the senator-judges should be more discerning.

  38. chijap chijap

@Sax, with LVN being on one side, does that make Corona the Seiko films of today? Puro scandalous at ST movies?

  39. Lets get rid of Corona and jail Arroyo first, then we tackle the system. The senators should also look at the impeachment experience as “in aid of legislation” and come up with measures to improve the system.
We don’t have to tie our hands and allow these jokers to slip through our hands just for the sake of respecting the system, we make sure we win inspite of the system and if that necessitates being maingay then so be it.
We need to win this, otherwise, apathy will creep in again like what happened in Gloria’s time. She and her cohorts managed to reign supreme using all the tricks to manipulate the system with impunity to the point that the people accepted the helplessness, the futility of hoping for changes.
If we need to start all over again, then lets start, the important thing is never to lose that fire in our belly, the passion, the desire for change – never substitute that with the legalese, comfort zone, learned helplessness – we have to chart our own destiny.
We showed the world that democracy works, that people power is a force to recon with when superpowers like the US are crippled by policies dictated by the affluent and influential 1%.
We need not copy from our seatmates anymore, we come up with answers of our own.

  40. If Corona opens up to the public, then Malacanang should answer, why gag anybody and who are we to gag anybody? Who died and made us infallible wise guys?
Let the leaders do their job, for inspite of how stupid we say they are they have achieved what we cannot do in 10 lifetimes.
Lets look at Tupas, why, can we do better that what he achieved in his lifetime so far? Have we won an election? Do we have even half the number of people who believe in him, how about a quarter, 2%? So can we say mas magaling pa tayo sa kanya? How many people will vouch for us that mas magaling pa tayo? Think again.

Ibig sabihin may mga itinatagong mga ” motibo “, sa buhay, na laging gagamit ng tao o sitwasyon para sa kanilang kapakanan..”Stepping other people or situations for their own glory or good”. Then after, bahala na kayo y sila !..even at the mannerism or gestures, e.g…always have meanings..on the record, nag-pauna pa, ngunit, halata ang motibo, its all about, “Pork Barrels”…tsktsktsk..
