Senatorial aspirants can’t resist opportunity in other people’s misery

Valuable political exposure 1

This picture of President Aquino’s visit to Barangay Tunasan in Muntinlupa accompanied by Liberal Party 2013 senatorial aspirants is generating controversy in social media. Among those with Aquino were Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas, Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon, former sectoral Rep.Riza Hontiveros, TESDA Administrator Joel Villanueva, and Aurora Rep.Sonny Angara.

Some comments:

Mae Paner: Siguro mas okay na di kayo ma expose na ganito kasi we cannot afford you guys, esp our president PNoy sick. Ang perception pag w Kris, wannabee senatoriables, Mar, tapos open truck, parang nangangampanya! So i guess you are hitting two birds w one stone?

Valuable political exposure 2

There were also those who defended Aquino and his party:

Paulynn Sicam:

Cris Lopera:
Just playing devil around here. Do we really expect our senatorial candidates to be “flawless”? – whose responsible for this? Pnoy, senatorial candidates, LP? Aside from them, sinong kakandidato na santo?

More comments:

Sel Caballes Cabingan: This photo aside from leaving a bad taste in the mouth is a no no no in basic security of the president; you don’t put all your eggs, whether penoy, balut, abnoy, hard-boiled in one basket; napakadelikado — isang hagis lang ng kwitis dyan sa trak siguradong magkakagulo na ang security nyan; at para kasing nagkakampanya na at mabuti walang nagtaas ng kamay at kumawaykaway sa mga tao; ang tingin ko tuloy sa picture na yan parang yung si nero ay pasayaw sayaw at lasing na lasing kumakanta at tumutgtug ng lira habang nasusunog ang rome; i myself is a moral supporter of the president but i can’t help but comment on this picture: hindi maganda ang dating sa taong bayan.

Inier Candor: What’s wrong with the people in this picture??? It is the intention of the people in this picture that is wrong! Very wrong! Let’s give dignity to our people who have suffered and are suffering due to this calamity. Let’s us not exploit their situation for our own selfish political intentions. Yes. even the hopeless and the helpless have dignity, let’s not rob them off that. Because their dignity is the only thing left for those people whose properties have been lost or damaged due to this calamity. I am appalled by the insensitivity of these people. I am appalled by their insensitivity. Pwede bang tumulong sila dahil nais nilang tumulong? There is dignity in giving and receiving.

Norwin Mark Castro: Let’s not kid ourselves, when you’re in politics, everything IS politics — whether you want to help or not, it’s because of your political office that you get to implement that. And the public — as taxpayers — compensate you for that, if not more. And since you have been given such privilege, unto you much responsibility is expected.

This is where the Communications Department becomes crucial. Whatever you do will have a message that it sends. Good intentions? What is hell paved with again? You want to help? Do you really need to be in that truck? You cannot please everybody, which is why you need to manage expectations. You want to show solidarity? It doesn’t have to be in one truck.

The mere fact that this photo has generated such intense displeasure from the public shows how ill-advised such course of action is. The Bush Administration was lambasted during Katrina not for his absence on the site but rather for his administration’s inefficiency in managing the crisis. Which is why the President need not appear on site, but rather to ensure that the relevant agencies do their jobs.

There’s actually another picture wherein relief goods and the public are kept waiting until the President’s arrival, which is quite ironic that in his effort to help, he has become the cause of delay.

And yes, it is in tragic moments like these that we need to be more vigilant with what our public servants do. Heroes are born in times of tragedy … and not promoted as heroes with press releases. And yes, the cabinet or agency members should have been deployed in other parts of the country that have been affected, and not paraded as a senatorial slate that will always be inferred, except for idiots in denial.

Actually, if there’s anyone who’s a burden here, it would be the entire government officials riding with Kris.

She’s the only one who has the legitimate right to ride a movie float.

  1. Customs Commissioner posted this explanation in Dennis Garcia’s FB wall:

Ellen, I was invited to join that visit because it was in my home district, Muntinlupa City, where I served as Congressman for three terms. My father, the incumbent congressman was also doing relief operations that day, as well as the day after, up to the weekend. I am helping my father in his district work. Many of the flood victims are personally known to me, having been my community leaders and poll watchers. After my work in Customs, I go to our district office to help in the distribution of Cong. Biazon’s relief goods.

To those wondering why smiles were around, it was because the people , including the flood victims themselves were cheering, waving and smiling. Anybody who was there would have seen how happy the residents were in seeing the president himself visit the area. As you know, FIlipinos even during calamities and coups, are a smiling bunch.

To those who are just looking at the photo, it may seem inappropriate to see the riders of the truck smile, but for those who were there to witness the entire scenario, it would have been understandable if the officials returned the smiles and greetings given by the people.

The truck ride was necessary because the roads leading to the evacuation site were flooded

  2. “The truck ride was necessary because the roads leading to the evacuation site were flooded

Of course hehehe! baha eh! baka mabasa! But while the truck ride is necessary to them (nanga-ngampanya eh) the visit is achingly unnecessary

  4. Pinoy politicians should remember:

“When I am right ,no one remembers. When I am wrong, no one forgets!”

Yung mga sanctimonious so-and-so’s diyan. Ano na ba ang sabi sa Biblia?

When you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

It is too early for any campaigning; so makakalimutan din yan, kung papogi nga lang.

  7. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Ang politico daw ay parang chick-boy. The chase is more gratifying than the actual conquest. Yung ligaw-ligaw, etc., yan ang thrilling. Kapag nakuha na, they get bored. So they have serial relationships, dahil sa thrill of pursuit.

In the words of Dean Bartolome Carale, it is not the pursuit of happiness, but the happiness of pursuit.

Ganyan din ang pulitiko. There is more fun in the campaigning; the machinations to outmaneuver the other party, and deny them the vote; the vote buying, vote finessing, the vote manufacturing.

Kapag nanalo na, do they have any satisfaction in actual performance on the job? Magbilang kayo. How many are as passionate about law-making as they are about campaigning?

In the Cory senate, a few names readily come to mind – Salonga (presiding); Enrile and Maceda fiscalizing and participating in floor debates; Ting Paterno working on eco and financial bills.

  8. Kakapikon, akala mo kung sinong mga magagaling. Simula Tuesday evening nakababad na kami. We could have chosen to stay dry at home, pero maraming kawawa. Lalo sa Taguig, Munti at San Pedro. Like in Ondoy, hiniram namin yung speedboat ni Manalo sa Taguig. We were not able to do rescue work kasi grabe ang ulan.

Tapos eto maririnig mo, kesyo epal, kesyo nangangampanya.

Kaya pakiusap, KUNG HINDI RIN LANG KAYO TUTULONG, TUMAHIMIK NA LANG KAYO.

  9. Mike Mike

I don’t see anything wrong with the pic.

I sure hope that the donations would go to the victims. I remembered the major earthquake that hit central Luzon in 1990 and the Mt. Pinatubo eruption the following year, many imported relief goods from foreign donors were said to have been “hijacked” by unscrupulous gov’t officials and sold them.

  11. vic vic

In times like this, it is the opportunity for those who were trained in social works, rescue and dispensing emergency aid to be in the front line and the politicians in the background and learned something of Value…and maybe just maybe they can find solutions to these recurring tragedy where they are quick to exploit…it is just a Shame…

  12. chi chi

Nauna na akong mag-donate, tongue…via Red Crosss as usual.

wow..daming mababait na tao..pakain dito pakain duon..relief goods dito reliefs good duon…most as for contribution to help mga nasalanta ng baha….

  15. netgazer netgazer

what is wrong with this picture? none. the media and those people who always put malice on people’s deeds even in time of calamities like this one are the problem. whether these politicians go on their own or in a group like this one, people, especially the media will put color into it. if they don’t visit the victims, the media will have negative words to say, and if they do like this one and even on their own, they will say they are politicking. i accept that these are politicians, and will take every opportunity to make their presence known. in times like this, the media should have simply said something like ‘known personalities and leaders leaders visits calamity victims’ and not add any negative words to the title. don’t put negativity on people’s mind, let them think that way if they like, but don’t feed them with such negative thoughts at the start.

  16. perl perl

Kaya nga sila ginagamit pag ganyang may sakuna.

    just remain anonymous!

  20. chi chi

    he he he heeeeh!

  23. chi chi

  25. baguneta baguneta
