Edith Burgos on Aquino’s ‘leftist propaganda’ remark

Still searching for her missing son
Edith Burgos, wife of press freedom icon Jose Burgos Jr. and mother of Jonas Burgos, who was never seen since he was abducted by persons suspected to be members of the military on April 28, 2007, issued a statement yesterday in reaction to President Aquino’s remark dismissing criticisms about the dismal human rights records of his administration as leftist propaganda.

Burgos statement:

“My son, Jonas, is still missing as so many others are. He was forcibly abducted during the Gloria Arroyo administration, and until now we have yet to get a categorical statement from authorities on the fate of my son. And my family had admittedly become vocal in our plea that military produce my Jonas.

“To call this propaganda and to label it leftist is the height of insensitivity to a mother who continues to search for his missing son. I stand before the Lord, who is truth Himself, in witness of this truth.

“Now, when you are looking for a missing loved one, is it justified to label you as leftist? Unless the definition has been changed, I would not subscribe to what has been officially said by Malacanang. To seek justice and to right a wrong done to families who have been victims of enforced disappearances, will that be considered a leftist act?

“Incidentally, a few days ago, President Aquino approved the promotion of several military generals. Among them was Col. Eduardo Año who was promoted to Brigadier General.

“Col. Año is one of the respondents in the criminal case we filed with the Department of Justice for the abduction of my son. After one year, the case is still under preliminary investigation.

“Today, I fear that the message relayed in such blatant act by authorities can be a justification for human rights violators to continue their abuses.

“With Malacanang’s tough branding of human rights violations as leftist propaganda, are the authorities now saying that I will never see my son again?”

Last Tuesday in Auckland, New Zealand, Aquino took a snipe at critics of his administration’s human rights records zeroing on an unnamed senatorial candidate who was not rating well in the surveys. He said:

“We have a very vocal leftist community but if the surveys are any indication, they have a senatorial candidate-our senators are elected at large throughout the nation-and this person currently has 2.6 percent of the population voting for him which is very, very little ’cause there’s only the 12 candidates out of about 27 I think who are running this time around who will have seats in the Senate.”

(In the September 2012 survey of Pulse Asia, only 2.9 per cent of the respondents said they will be voting for Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casino. There were 36 names in the survey and Casino was in the range of 31 to 35.)

Aquino also said:””So they are very good at propaganda but I think the record speaks for itself. One of the accused former general of our army is our fugitive from justice because there is a warrant of arrest… We’re trying to remove that impunity that used to exist. My predecessor is currently in jail awaiting trial. She’s detained. We’ve removed the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court through an impeachment process. So basically we want to ensure that the rule of law applies to everybody.”

Casiño fired back at Aquino: “Let me remind the President that before his mother died, he did not even rate in any survey nor was [he] considered by anyone to be of presidential caliber. In fact, he only became senator because of his lineage and the heroic efforts of his mother and [father].

Press Secretary Edwin Lacierda defended the President advising Casiño “.. don’t take it personally. If you view the context of the President, he was saying that the Left has a massive propaganda and if you notice, the propaganda is all about criticizing the government.

Casiño answered Lacierda: “It’s nothing personal? Don’t worry about me, I can shrug off the President’s insults anytime. But to dismiss the plight of human rights victims and their families as mere propaganda IS personal, painful and dangerous. “

Casiño further said, “How insensitive of the President.

“It may be hard for the President to admit that the abuses continue but please don’t dismiss them as mere Leftist propaganda. The President should be made to understand this or else the impunity will continue.”

Dahil up to now no justice is being serve to a guy na working sa casino na nag vanish like Houdini dahil sa video ni Erap na nagsusugal.

Human rights issues is not the monopoly of the LEFTIST political view but all political views in a peaceful Democracy. The leftist groups is using it as a campaign Issue against the Govt who is Struggling from the start to address the same. President Aquino admins have been addressing this singular issue that has been haunting the image of the country as one of the violators of human rights and in many instances sanctioned by authorities. A warrant of arrest And rewards been issued to its notorious alleged violator, formers military officer General “the Butcher”Palparan who had been cited by GMA as one of the heroes of the campaign. And Pnoy being Pnoy just can not pass responding to People like Rep Casino who whose Agenda is listing more toward his personal ambition rather than in promoting the Human Rights of his country men.

“Leftist propaganda?” Is the guy still missing Mr. President, or not? That question, and the search for a reasonable answer not tidied up in favor and politics, is is a fair question. The question is being asked by Human Rights Watch in more generalized terms; I suppose that is a leftist organization, too, eh? Maybe commie pinko, huh?

Are you saying that Col. Año was one of those cleared in the Mayuga report? What’s the konek? Pakiesplika, pls.

  8. I’m referring to the blockquote regarding the election cheating and how that is connected to Jonas’ case.

    The biggest leftist propaganda is hunger;

and the absence of job opportunities and infrastructure to fuel job growth.

There is a town in Isabela Province – San Mariano. In the 70s, it was overrun by NPAs. My brother and his med rep friends used to skip the town from coverage.

Then Macoy had a concrete road built from Cauayan to San Mariano. The Pantranco came, with people and goods from neighboring towns. Trade began to flow to and from San Mariano.

What happened to the NPA influence? Gone like some has-been rocker, by 1980.

“We have a very vocal leftist community” and an even more loquacious president, with three communications secretaries.

“One of the accused former general of our army is our fugitive from justice” and another respondent (Col. Año) was promoted by me. I know that Secretary De Lima was disqualified from SC promotion because of a mere administrative complaint. This guy is a respondent in a criminal complaint. But what am I in power for?

“We’re trying to remove that impunity that used to exist.”

We are replacing it with our own

  11. saxnviolins saxnviolins

our own brand of clean government.

  14. Oo nga e. Inilalagay ako lagi sa thread na three posts behind the latest.

Mag-re-reunion daw si Goyang at si Corona sa kulungan – is the newest Presidential banter.

Nagbibilang ng sisiw bago mapisa ang itlog. Paano kung bugok ang itlog? Meanwhile, kabi-kabila ang dismissal ni Aling Leila, the ex-future CJ, past perfect (daw) CHR Chairman, and present tense, Secretary of Justice.

Now about the tax evasion case. Corona has unexplained wealth unearthed in the impeachment. He did not pay taxes on that wealth, which certainly came from some income. So simple lang; slam dunk; kulong ka. (By the way Popo Lotilla is the defense counsel).

Slam dunk ba? Not so fast. Tax evasion requires the existence of the following facts, which must be proven by the prosecution.

    1. There was income – okay, mayroon nga.
    2. The income was taxable.
    3. The tax was not paid. Okay. Proven. No tax was paid.

How about number 2? For income to be taxable, it must have been earned in the Philippines. Income tax is imposed in situ (Latin for in place – where it was earned). For example, I earn my income here, so the the IRS, not the BIR collects from me.

So the first job of the BIR is to prove that Corona earned the money in the Philippines. All they have, so far, is proof that the money was deposited. Where was it earned? That is the job.

The devil, as always, is in the details – in the evidence, not in the information (charge shee).

    Ano? Slam dunk pa ba?

  18. Re#8, Sorry Tongue, nalito ako. Magkaiba pala si Gen. Año (Burgos case) and Gen. Ardo (2004 election cheating)

  19. Gen. Rey Ardo kasi is slated to be the next Southcom chief. Sorry again for the confusion.

  20. In Australia, Aquino said those criticizing his administration’s human rights record should just help in gathering evidence and filing cases against the violators.

Rep. Teddy Casino: “Where has the President been all these years? Doesn’t he remember when we were together during the 13th Congress that I had repeatedly brought incidents of human rights abuses to the concerned government agencies and assisted victims and their families in investigating and filing cases?

“Later, I filed a case against Gen. Palparan myself.
“In the 15th Congress I have filed 15 resolutions to investigate HR abuses. I’ve gone to several fact finding missions and helped victims build up cases against their abusers. Tapos kami pa ngayon ang nagkulang?

“Mr. President, don’t blame me or the victims for the government’s failure to investigate and prosecute human rights violators. “We’re doing our part, please do yours.”

well sino ba kasi ang nagluklok?
