Day 7 Yolanda:thank you note and more appeals for help

The anguish and misery caused by typhoon Yolanda has not at all diminished the wit and sense of humor of Filipinos. d I saw this suggestion, a brilliant solution not only to the breakdown of peace and order in Tacloban, still reeling from the destruction wrought by typhoon Yolanda week ago but also how to recover the people’s money from those who pocketed the Priority Development Assistance Fund or PDAF.

It’s the post by Edwin Molina in Ace Esmeralda’s wall. I’m sharing this without Molina’s permission.

He said: “We now need the so-called masterminds of the looters to run the show in Tacloban for their organizational/motivational skills, foresight, sense of urgency and swift, decisive actions after Yolanda hit the area.

“Later on to teach PNoy and his men such skills.

“PNoy should be starved to near death so he will understand the objective. Then they can do field training exercises by looting the houses of Napoles, Jinggoy, Revilla and Enrile. Anyway, looting is legal, plunder is not.”

Texas-based Armando Fuentes, whose letter of appeal to find his mother and 11 other relatives in Tolosa, Leyte was reprinted in this space last Monday, wrote that he was able to contact his brother and they are safe.

His letter:

“Our whole family is safe thank God, I was able to contact my brother in Tolosa just the other day (he was in Baybay , Leyte when I called, one of the remaining areas with intermittent cellphone signals) .

“He said they are all okay, everything is gone, most important everyone is alive. The problem now post- typhoon is their food, shelter and medicine. They and the rest of the affected people and areas aside from Tacloban desperately need help ASAP.

“I read on Facebook that Tolosa is stable and has been reached by relief efforts from PRC, PNP and military. Unfortunately it is not at all true. People in Tolosa are still hungry and waiting for food and other relief from either the goverment or private organizations. Please, if at all possible, for some to stop disseminating misinformation coz lives are at stake.

“If Tacloban, Palo and closer barangays relief afforts are still a problem, how much more for the surrounding towns. At present aside from Tanauan and Tolosa same thing is happening to other towns farther away, they are not reached by relief efforts.

“We know Tacloban was the hardest hit, and always in all the news, would it be fair that all the rest of the places be covered in detail as well.”

The miserable situation of Yolanda’s victims has touched everybody’s heart and each and every one of us who have been spared by the super-typhoon’s wrath are in a giving mood. It is good.

Gwendolyn Pang, secretary general of the Philippine Red Cross, gave some guidelines in meaningful giving:

1. Cash is better.

Pang said the PRC knows what items are in abundance and what are lacking. They can use the cash to buy what are lacking but needed most.

They can also get the items cheaper since they are buying in bulk.

2. Don’t give noodles. The victims would need water to cook noodles. Water is a scarce commodity in Yolanda-hit areas.

3. If you give canned goods, make sure that they can be opened without a can opener, which the victims do not have.

4. Give clothes with “integrity.” Do not give your inaamag winter clothes. Leyte and Samar are in the Philippines, a tropical country.

Do not give party clothes. The victims will look like silly wearing sequined, sexy clothes in evacuation centers. T-shirts are practical and useful.

Do not give used underwear. Buy a dozen or more underwears and donate. The victims will be thankful.

5. Also needed are anti-bacterial soap, not cosmetic soap; anti-dandruff shampoo; toothbrushes and toothpaste; laundry soap.

“Give with integrity, “ Pang said.

The Philippine Red Cross hotlines are 143, +632 527-0000, 09324995241 and 09175261957.

We mentioned last Monday that tenor Arthur Espiritu is spearheading a fund drive for Llorente, Samar, hometown of his wife, Christina Jobocan.

“We have no word from Christina’s family, or from our nuptial godfather, Llorente Vice-Mayor Nathaniel Hugo. I was so nervous for her because it was all she could think of,” Espiritu said.

Those who want to help Tenor Arthur Espiritu in the fundraising for typhoon victims of Llorente town in Eastern Samar are advised to get in touch with these numbers: 09273206744 or 09154985063.

Yes, Cash donation is better as it is flexible and the recipient charitable org can use it to get what is most needed. We can donate to our Red Cross by Text by just dialing 30333 and text Redcross or Rouge and the bill for $5 is billed to the phone account..Red Cross and other Registered Charities for Haiyan Appeal just go to their Website and Few Cliks you’re done and a minute after the Tax Receipt is mailed and can be downloaded for tax purposes and the Government will Match all Donation $ to $ until December 8…Phone Providers already Donated large sums and the Red Cross donations is pouring in..

This Morning, the Feds is planning to expand the Canadian Relief from Iloilo northward to Roxas and will be sending Helicopters to cover isolated and inaccessible localities…Two Cargo Planes already wheeled in Iliolo, (my province) with Red Cross Field Hospital and Water Purification Team. The Field Hospital staffed by Volunteers is capable of treating up to 300 patients a day including inpatient surgery and is a veteran of Haiti EQ and many African Disaster Rapid Response…Thanks to my Fellow Canadians and in behalf of my fellow Ilongos my gtatitude…

Vic, Canada immigration is also prioritizing family members who are affected by the tragedy by helping them get to Canada much sooner. The problem is are those applying genuine residents of the affected areas? Given the dishonesty of many Filipinos when it comes to immigration to be able to leave the country, expect fake applicants and illegal recruiters. Canadian immigration unlike the US is very much abused by other foreigners including false refugees who claim false refugee status.

  7. vic vic

But Mannie there are also Millions of “illegal” aliens in the US or undocumented residents and Abusers of privileges can not be avoided but it will not preclude any decent and compassionate nations to do what is to be done for Humanitarian and compassionate reasons..Canada done this humanitarian act many times before and we have no reason not to do it again.

“In the US, the Federal Government has established disaster preparedness program enjoining not only government units but business corporations as well to comply,” sabi ni Dela Cruz sa isang panayam sa pamamagitan ng Skype noong Miyerkoles.

“It is very similar to what Robredo would like to achieve,” sabi ni Dela Cruz patungkol sa layunin ng dating kalihim na para sa disaster preparedness.

Victims died mostly of hunger. Only a few thousands died immediately during the typhoon; but the number grows because of hunger and lack of medical attention. This is not tolerable. So, the police official who was sacked for saying 10,000 died and picked up by the international media was correct after all. Casualties shall reach 10,000 and more.

Without offense to the yellow fans especially the late Cory who many admired, Pnoy has nothing in his head like his mother except popularity. Leadership is tested during crisis, and Pnoy failed terribly.

By the way Vic, why is Toronto Mayor Ford not stepping down despite the overwhelming evidences against him? Pinoy style eh?

So far, he is not charged of anything yet..he already admitted smoking crack cocaine and the the Star has published more scandal including partying with prostis..and it was well known before…The Provincial Premier might do something about it but is still waiting for the City Council move.

He is so popular with the voters that if he runs next year, he might even get re-elected…Olivia Chow is planning to run for Mayor..(she is originally from HongKong, MP and widow of Late Jack Layton, the Leader of New Democrats..And she could beat Ford or anyone else.

In one of the more embarrassing showings of goodwill in the wake of Super Typhoon Haiyan, China initially pledged $100,000 of foreign aid to the Philippines, far less than even some private donors. After being shamed, the country with the world’s second biggest economy increased their donation to an unimpressive (for global superpower) $1.6 million. Now there are whispers back home that Filipinos aren’t being appreciative enough.

NEW YORK (AP) — Journey is donating $350,000 to help relief efforts in the Philippines, and its lead singer has a message for his homeland: “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Arnel Pineda and the rest of the band announced the donation on Friday. It will go to the United Nations World Food Programme, which is providing Filipinos with food assistance. The donation should provide 1.4 million meals.

In a statement, Pineda referenced the group’s famous “Believin'” song and said “help is on the way.”

The journey for the Visayans will be a long one but there is hope. Magkapit bisig lang tayong lahat. If everyone does his own reaching out, they will be up and running again!

Cash is much better than any goods for now. Local folks can buy local goods. Shipping is a big problem right now. Maybe after the holidays, we can send some other stuff to the victims. For now, cash will go a long way.

  20. Mannie Mannie

I think cash is not much needed at this time because there are not much foods and items to buy. Stores are half empty. And goods have already been and are already being ship to the affected areas. When everything is over and back to normal, cash is then needed to buy goods. Companies can begin to supply and deliver.
