Wanted: Tagalog word for “human trafficking”

From the MTV Enslaved
From the MTV “Enslaved”

In an informal survey conducted by a civil society group working to stop human trafficking, they asked people in the streets what comes to their mind when they hear the phrase “human trafficking.”

Everybody answered:“Traffic.” As in vehicular traffic.

Such is the level of public awareness about human trafficking- the trade in human beings for several purposes, most commonly sexual slavery, pornography, forced labor , extraction of organs or tissues, surrogacy.

The Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking under the Department of Justice is aware of the importance of public cooperation in the campaign against this abominable crime in which the Philippines ranks high as one of the source countries of trafficked persons.

They want to involve the public, especially the people in the provinces, through an information campaign. And they also know that to do that, they have to speak the language or the dialect of the people they are dealing with.

Yet, up to now, they don’t know how to translate in Tagalog the term “human trafficking.”

Jan Arceo, IACAT’s International Affairs Executive Officer, said they are asking the help of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino on the Filipino word for “human trafficking.” She also said they need Filipino language writers as well as writers in local dialects to do their information materials.

Lately, media came out with reports of the proliferation of cybersex dens in the Philippines following the release of results of the investigation by London’s National Crime Agency about pedophile syndicates in the Philippines victimizing some 60,000 to 100,000 Filipino children (ages six to 15).

In reporting, members of media are again reminded of the following principles for ethical reporting on children provided by the United Nations Children Fund:

1. The dignity and rights of every child are to be respected in every circumstance.

2. In interviewing and reporting on children, special attention is to be paid to each child’s right to privacy and confidentiality, to have their opinions heard, to participate in decisions affecting them and to be protected from harm and retribution, including the potential of harm and retribution.

3. The best interests of each child are to be protected over any other consideration, including over advocacy for children’s issues and the promotion of child rights.

4. When trying to determine the best interests of a child, the child’s right to have their views taken into account are to be given due weight in accordance with their age and maturity.

5. Those closest to the child’s situation and best able to assess it are to be consulted about the political, social and cultural ramifications of any reportage.

6. Do not publish a story or an image which might put the child, siblings or peers at risk even when identities are changed, obscured or not used.

First of all, human trafficking is different from sex trafficking. Many mistake the two as one.

Human trafficking is a multi-billion dollar business. Among the most notorious syndicates engaged in this is the Chinese Triad. They smuggle the Chinese to US, Canada and Europe. Aside from the victims or their families paying huge fees to the syndicate, the victims end up being hostages in their destinations often in Chinatown. There, they work in restaurants and kitchens. Some even end up as prostitutes. The local Chinese gangs control them. The victims’ pay mostly end up being taken by the gangs. And when they fail to give or pay, they either end up being beaten black or blue or their families back home are threatened or even killed.

Russian Mafia and other international syndicates are as notorious. So, this problem is not limited to the Philippines only. It’s an international problem that needs to be taken very seriously.

Illegal recruitment agencies is another form of Human trafficking as their victims turn out living as illegal aliens and subjected to exploitation. So their can be simply no single word or Phrase in Tagalog that can convey the meaning of the words…

The Proliferation of Adult videos and Webs production from Eastern Europe was the result of Human Trafficking by the European Organized crimes…Years ago when contract working permits were as easy to get for Entertainers to Canada, it was found out that that was Exploited by the same organized Crimes to Traffic sex workers from Eastern Europe disguise as Club dancers..the Program was DISCONTINUED

  3. Mannie Mannie

Vic, I think there’s also visa for dancers (not sure if it’s called Exotic Dancers) who are allowed to work as club dancers. I’m not sure if this is still allowed today.

  4. Mannie Mannie

I’m referring to that visa available in Canada. I think those girls could come on work permit.

human trafficking…pangangalakal para alipiin ang tao? Just too hard to translate for common people to notice!

We pinoys are easy preys due to intentional lack of opportunities in our country..100 million pinoys and counting..the way our government manage us, i don’t think this issue on human trafficking will change. Siguro if our government is run by professionals and properly funded maybe? Sad to say, many in our government agencies involved to handle this social mess, which is criminal in nature, are themselves uneducated about it, hindi nababahala or pagod sa pahinga?. They always have reason why they can’t do their jobs. Seems like they were there for other reasons. I can say in my honest opinion, they are not there to solve this problem.

haiys..our so called national leaders are always too busy fighting with one another kung sino ang uupo? at kapag nakaupo na busy sa partihan at dilihensya..blah blah!

DSWD? just wait and see..sa susunod na bagyo ganun pa rin sila! masisipag magbalot ng fud packs! i don’t know why they don’t want to put more intelligence with what they do? me budget naman!. The government collect a lot in taxes if one will just do the math..just the VAT alone if properly utilize, theres a lot that can be done to make a difference.

Everytime we have to change leaders, lagi na lang kaibigan ang nilalagay sa poder instead of real professional. We should stop bringing in friends unqualified for the job but hire professionals who can. Fix civil service law and let go of the many unfit in government!

  6. olan olan

ooops forgot! they were place there for a reason, either for the benefit of big names in big business or big names in government to make dilehensya happens! sad but theres truth to this in my view!

mannie, The is still working Visa for most jobs that are can not be filled locally, but there was a Program before that due to High demand for Night club entertainers the Conteacts were Accelerated, that was were the Human trafficking got into the Picture and the contract now is processed the Same as any working Contract,..

  9. Mannie Mannie

Thanks Vic. First time I heard of high demand for night club entertainers. Why are our Filipinas or OFWs not being hires in Canada?

  10. vic vic

Are you talking about contract workers for nightclub entertainers? They were back then and that was one of the sad stories and one of the reasons why it is no longer being tolerated…They were accelerated and contracted to work for by Agents and house in a Trailer homes like properties and only allowed to go out at night to work at Clubs..Now there are thousands of Filipino contract workers and are being qualified for Immigrant status after continuous employment of two years..(they be nannies, caregivers, and farm workers ) the immigration rules are very flexible as they are bound to be exploited so they can be amended and revised to plug the loopholes as soon as they are exploited…

Right now due to hard times, night life is not as vibrant as before…

Canada is more interested in permanent residents..it is now focus in bringing a number of Independent Immigrants yearly from every corner of the world on the nationals ratio basis.

Of course the China being the biggest population will get the most number, followed by India and the Phl is in the top Five…

  11. Mannie Mannie

Thanks Vic. Canada’s immigration is now more focused on skilled workers than other categories even sacrificing family unity. I heard that it’s hard to sponsor parents or grandparents. There’s what’s called Super Visa for them, but they don’t enjoy the free health care which is very important to the seniors and elderly people who are not permanent residents.

    OFF TOPIC,

Boy Kupit for 2016 President. Do not forget.

They are referring to Bong Revilla.

  15. vic vic

Well, the only word that can think of is “Alipin” = Slave. The only difference is during the time in the past, the Master can legally Traffic his slaves, barter them, sell, just like a piece of property…

  16. Mannie Mannie

#13 Arvin, I beg to disagree again. The reason why GMA is getting inhuman treatment could be because she’s not human. She was the one who destroyed her own husband, Marcos. Had it not for her, Marcos would not have been ousted easily. Anyway, I refrain from elaborating because this would require lots of space.

  17. Mannie Mannie

Arvin, I was referring to Imelda who destroyed her husband Marcos.

  18. vic vic

Mannie at # 11..yes it is…but still can sponsor parents as long as they will not be an obvious burden to the Canadian Taxpayers..in Good times it was even allowed for Parents to bring along their “Single” or unmarried Children regardless of Age but that Too was abused as many brought along their Children Fraudently…some even were already Grandparents and many were DEPORTED BACK. Like I said the rules are Flexible.

Right, we are paying a token Premium for our Health care, and you might as well know that in Ontario the Residents are paying the 3% cost of the Health Care in user fee…that is the average of $300 for regular worker..those earning 20 or thousands or less are exempt and over 40 pays a prorated extra…we did not pay user fee before…we are also incurring Deficit spending. Both Federal and Provincial…whereas the federal before the Recession had a sustained Surplusses for 11 years in a Row…and would not see susplus until maybe in 2020…

  20. Mannie Mannie

#19 What Arvin meant was that there was less traffic during the time of Marcos because there were less cars on the roads.
