Will Binay also withdraw from 2016 presidential race?

No one is really surprised that Vice President Jejomar Binay backed out of the Nov. 27 debate with Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV which he himself suggested to the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas.
Trillanes vs Binay
When the debate was starting to take a life of its own after he mentioned it to KBP President Herman Basbaño last October and Trillanes accepted the challenge, Binay was just waiting for an opportunity to back out.

The opportunity happened yesterday during his 72nd birthday celebration at the Philippine Marines headquarters.

He was asked about Trillanes’ statements that he was going into the much-publicized activity fully aware that the vice president, a lawyer, has an advantage as far as debating skills are concerned. But the senator, who was formerly a Philippine Navy officer said, he is on the side of truth.

Binay said, “Huwag na natin ituloy. Ayoko na kung ganyan sinasabi niya. (Let’s not push through with it. I don’t like if that’s what he is saying.)”

The reason why I am withdrawing is I have heard comments that I am an experienced debater, I’m a lawyer. He has also been saying things as if they were already confirmed. I don’t want to appear oppressive and opportunistic, so I am backing out.)”

But Binay’s spokesperson, Cavite governor Jonvic Remulla , was outrageously creative in his reason for his principal’s withdrawal from the debate: the Vice President realized it is a “disservice” to the survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda.

Trillanes said his reaction is one of “ambivalence.”

“Actually, I’m, in a way, expecting this, so, I couldn’t be disappointed,” he said.

He added that Binay’s withdrawal from something that he himself started shows his untrustworthiness.“Kasi alam niyo, ever since hindi napanghahawakan ang salita ni Vice President Binay.(You know, ever since VP Binay has no word of honor). This will totally destroy his credibility. Hindi na talaga natin siya mapagkakatiwalaan(We really can’t trust him).”

Trillanes recalled the Nov. 29, 2007 Manila Peninsula siege, where Binay was part of the group that planned a civilian-military action to oust Gloria Arroyo, who was then embroiled in election cheating and corruption scandals.

Trillanes, who had won as senator while in detention for the July 2003 Oakwood mutiny against Arroyo, was scheduled to appear in a hearing at the Makati Regional Trial Court at the Makati City Hall that day.

The plan was for a mass rally in front of the statue of Sen. Benigno Aquino at the corner of Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas. Binay promised to mobilize his constituents including city hall employees for the mass action.

As planned, Trillanes, his fellow Magdalo soldiers , and Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim walked out of the hearing only to find out that there were no people at the agreed venue. Pinahamak niya ang buong grupo (When we walked out of the court, there was no Binay. He put us in trouble .”

Trillanes and his companions decided to go to Manila Peninsula where they made a stand against the Arroyo government. ““Buong araw walang dumating.

Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, flanked by Antonio Trillanes IV and former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, read the statement calling on the people to withdraw support fron Gloria Arroyo.
Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, flanked by Antonio Trillanes IV and former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, read the statement calling on the people to withdraw support fron Gloria Arroyo during the Manila Pen seige.

Binay was with former President Joseph Estrada in Quezon City that day. The military later rammed an armored tank into the Manila Pen lobby and lobbed tear gas forcing the rebel soldiers to surrender.

Trillanes said Binay later visited him at Camp Crame, where he was detained , and apologized.

Trillanes said the Manila Pen incident, the revelations in the Senate investigation and the manner Binay is facing them “ show lack of character, untrustworthiness of the Vice President, and the lack of any intention to face the people regarding the allegations brought up against him.”

He said the Senate investigation of Binay will continue.

What will be Binay’s next move? Back out of the 2016 presidential race?

Binay next move is to prepare his self and that of his family to for his day in Court and that will come…who in this whole country will ever expect that Juan Ponce Enrile with all his wiliness and cleverness, his influence and enormous resources end up counting days in Detention??? And Binay is due to do his time…

  2. Kapag gusto may paraan, kapag ayaw may dahilan.

Binay betrayed the people when neither his promised force or his ugly face showed up at the Manila Peninsula in 2007.

I am not a bit surprised of his atras move ngayon, specially that Sen Sonny has cornered him already. Binay knows very well hindi aatras si Sen Sonny kahit short of debate expertise. 🙂

Pathetic excuse to withdraw from a debate.

  5. vonjovi2 vonjovi2

  7. From Bert Africa:

I have been following Philippine polical arena ever since Pnoy went into action and felt contended with unravelling of graft and corruption from the highest to the lowest level in the government. Imagine, the plunder and corruption from Erap and Arroyo as president, Corona as Supreme Court Chief Justice, Enrile, Estrada, Revilla as senators and now VP Binay running for next president and Purisima as chief of PNP, these people are highest figures on PH land. Even Ombudsman and Sandigan Bayan offices are also turnished. What happen if Pnoy term is over? What is next? Unless a dependable watchdog in tandem with media can be established to expose future graft and corruption. I was wondering why Freedom Of Information legislation in senate remain in status quo. The history of plunder and corruption are rooted in PH and people with power and prestige is prone to greed leading to graft and corruption, just like most of actors and actresses got involved in politics. I hope passing of Anti-Political Dynasty legislation in senate should get approve. To my understanding, this is one of main source of plunder. Sorry to say but I find politics in PH is the most rewarding career now a days. This is the reason why I personally advocating Pnoy running for the 2nd term in the office, he need to finish the work he started and get rid of these political and government officials scalawags. People poverty and national development could have been achieved should plundered money from PH treasure is used for the people.

Binay should withdraw from 2016 presidential election, he has a very slim chance of winning in national election. May be it may work in local government position just like what Erap did in Manila. I could imag

It is not enough to Demand the withdrawal of Binay from 2016 Race but the :Senate and the Public should demand a very thorough Criminal Probe of all allegations of Corruption and criminal activities of all members of is circles and also an Independent Inquiry to find the Root causes of these Maladies and find Measures to Prevent them Happening again and again.

The Binays, Estradas , Revillas , Napoles etc are just the Syptoms of the System that is Sick and needs some real diagnosis on what it is suffering from and what are the treatments.

It is not just the Political leaders.. And the politicians. Everyone in society has a part in this malady., the Electorate, the media, the business, and even the religious institution.

    Ellen,

I have heard rumors that Binay is very popular with Marines so popular in fact that there are a number of them who will protect Binay should a direct confrontation between Binay and the Senate or subpoena and warrant of arrest servers occur.

That’s why when he celebrated his birthday at Marine HQ, when he donned a Team Navy t-shirt, joined their walkathon, morning calesthenics, and boodle fight, medyo napaisip ako na baka pinagmamalaki na ni Binay na mabigat ang back-up niya.

Pls check with your contacts kung ano nga ang relationship ni Binay with some of the officers and men in the Marine corps

Binay is following the footsteps of Erap. Muntik pa ngang manalo ulit si ERap in the 2010 elections. Ang problem nation ay ang mga botante. They will vote the people who can give them money come election time. The corrupt donors will put another corrupt president into office coz they like to be in business again. It is not remote that the voters will still put Binay into office. God forbids. We will have another corrupt regime. One step forward, two steps backward.

  12. snooper snooper

The truth finally came out. Binay betrayed Sonny at the Manila Pen. Binay was plotting to oust GMA but now he is visiting GMA. “Traidor” ang tawag dyan. I can not blame Sonny to be as passionate as he is in making sure that Binay will not win the presidency.

  13. snooper snooper

Binay’s joining the marines looks like a surprise to the marines.

  21. Lurker Lurker

I don’t think that Binay has much sympathy among the marines. He’s still the Veep so they have to be respectful. Between Binay and Trillanes, the Senator carries more respect among the marines, and when push comes to shove, they’ll back Sonny.

  22. snooper snooper

Vonjovi, who would have thought that Arroyo, Enrile (now in his 90s, Revilla & Jinggoy will be detained? I believe that somehow, even if the corruption is not completely stopped, at least these are slowly being uncovered. Cooruption during Marcos was limited to just a few. Corrution now has become a way of life for almost all politicians. The ones who will not buy votes will never win and the ones who do will have to recoup the money they used to buy votes so they steal. The bottom-line is, it is the people who sell their votes who are to be blamed for what the Philippines have become. Change that system and we should see a turning point.

  23. snooper snooper

Lurker, I agree with you on # 22.

Back read kayo during the Manila Pen days dito sa blog.

Remember yung lalaking naka-Uzi at naka-wig?

  25. I agree with the conclusion of the CBCP priest. A Binay presidency is scary and dangerous.

Personally I know that he has coddled, employed as his close-in, cold-blooded gun-for-hire goons. My former neighbor, Antonio Da Silva, was infamous for dozens of vigilante rubouts he did before he became CIS civilian agent and later, Binay close-in-cum-hitman. Tony Kalkal, as Da Silva is popularly called in the underworld in Pasay, Makati, Paranaque, Las Pinas and Manila, is the reason Anabelle Rama had to send Ruffa off to the US for many years. Her boyfriend (who she had eloped with) then, Dennis, is Tony’s son. You know Anabelle’s reason, of course.

Da Silva has been permanently silenced (and replaced) because he was getting too noisy. No one has seen him or what’s left of him.

So, those who laugh at Trillanes when he said he might get killed, or at Cayetano who received a death threat yesterday, are laughing out of ignorance because they do not know the likes of Binay or what he is capable of.

  27. Confirmed. I thought my memory was already failing me.

While he believed in Trillanes’ cause, Binay said he disagreed with his methods.

He shrugged off criticisms over his absence at the Peninsula, saying he felt “left out,” as no one from the local or national police had apprised him of developments.

“Why should I squeeze myself where I wasn’t wanted?” Binay said.

    This was in December, 2007.

Talagang ang MAGNANAKAW kapatid ng SINUNGALING.

Read the full denial here:Rebel with wacky wig identified as Binay security man

  28. Eksakto, nasa news yung interview kay Trillanes, pati yung footage ng presscon nila AT4, Gen. Lim, ex-VP Guingona at nakatayo sa likod si Rebel-in-wacky-wig.

Sabi ni Trillanes na in time, ibubuko niya rin yung iba pang politikong nagtulak pero nilaglag siya sa Manila Pen bukod kay Binay.

Thanks to halungkat baul, sabog na sabog si Binay ngayon. Naniniwala ako sa sabi mo #27 So, those who laugh at Trillanes when he said he might get killed, or at Cayetano who received a death threat yesterday, are laughing out of ignorance because they do not know the likes of Binay or what he is capable of.

Natawa naman ako dito, ayyayay! Ito ba yung sinasabing naka-aircon na piggery?

From the promise of heaven at Manila Pen to Binay’s piggery…hahaha! Dafuq, Binay!

Fear and guilt were all over the facial expression and body language of Binay when he was announcing that he was backing out of the debate with Sen. Antonio Trillanes that he had proposed. It was he who had challenged Trillanes to the debate: “Kung gusto niya, debate kami, anytime, anywhere.” But when Trillanes accepted the challenge, he began to look for excuses to back out. (Note that he did not challenge Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, who is a lawyer like himself. He probably thought that Trillanes, who is not a lawyer but a soldier, would be a pushover.)

When rumors circulated that he was going to back out of the debate, Binay said: “Hindi tayo aatras. Hindi yata ako umaatras.” (We will not retreat. I do not retreat.)

So why did Binay back out on the very flimsy excuse that Trillanes had said he would be at a disadvantage because he is not a lawyer? So what if he said that? The debate itself would have shown the people who is lying and who is not. It seems Binay is just a bluffer. – Neal H. Cruz

Conspiracy to commit rebellion ba, sabi ni Brenda? Mali naman.

Sometime ago, I opined that there was no rebellion in the case of Trillanes. That opinion applies to Binay as well, and all those who helped, or intended to help Trillanes.

    Rebellion is committed as follows:

Art. 134. Rebellion or insurrection; How committed. — The crime of rebellion or insurrection is committed by rising publicly and taking arms against the Government for the purpose of removing from the allegiance to said Government or its laws, the territory of the Philippine Islands or any part thereof, of any body of land, naval or other armed forces, depriving the Chief Executive or the Legislature, wholly or partially, of any of their powers or prerogatives.

An essential element is the taking of arms. Wala namang armas si Trillanes noon. Galing nga sa kulungan.

Now conspiracy is committed when two or more individuals agree to commit rebellion. That means, they agree to take up arms. Kung people power, then there is no rebellion, because there are no arms.

Hawak na ng Ombudsman di ba? So let her do her job. Wala namang saysay yang Senate hearing na yan kundi political voyeurism – wow may ninakaw; wow sinungaling, wow this and that. So what?

Although I opined for Trillanes when he was being prosecuted, I was never a fan. This is where I part company with the folks here.

If Trillanes is as staunch in his anti-patong crusade with Drilon as with Binay, maybe I will change my mind. I also agree with Lacson and the Joker, on not spending the PDAF or DAP, or whatever you call it.

So maybe Trillanes did not make tong-pats with his PDAF; that he is honest, and blah blah blah. But my disagreement with the PDAF, DAP, or whatever name, is conceptual. Spending should be determined by Congress, not by individual legislators. Honest man siya, honest man si Saguisag, honest man si Ting Paterno, I still hold to the belief that the power to determine where and on what to spend is reposed by the Constitution in the institution, not its individual members. So that Saguisag, Trillanes, or Ting Paterno are honest, is immaterial to my disagreement with the PDAF, DAP, or CDF (countrywide development fund daw, noong panahon ni Cory.).

If we go by the honesty of the legislators – Saguisag, Paterno, and Trillanes (as many here believe), then we are relying on good men, not on good laws. Tapos ang rule of law.

And by the way, ano na ang nangyari sa DAP, saan na ba ginastos? Bakit ang tagal ng disclosure ng COA, regarding the good men? Bakit nga pala walang audit sa gastos ni Penoy at Mar Roxas noong legislator sila? Dahil ba sila ay good and honest men? Selective na ba ang audit ng COA?

  44. saxnviolins saxnviolins

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, wika ng mga Kano.

Only when the COA audit of the PDAF of Penoy and Mar Roxas is disclosed, will I believe the hosannahs that they are honest men. Isama niyo na yang Trillanes, Cayetano, and Pimentel.

  49. Kahit sino pa testigo, the evidence speaks for itself. Mas importante, may ebidensya ba?
