Senators asked the wrong question

Sen. Grace Poe chairs hearing on Mamasapano carnage.
Sen. Grace Poe chairs hearing on Mamasapano carnage.

It was President Aquino who informed Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin, Armed Forces Chief Gen. Gregorio Catapang and the rest of the presidential party in Zamboanga on the Mamasapano debacle on Jan. 25, a source close to Malacañang said.

That’s why in the hearings in the Senate and the House of Representatives the three and Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero, chief of Western Mindanao Command said they didn’t inform Aquino of the dawn carnage that left 44 members of the Special Action Force dead when they were with him throughout the day.

Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Defense Secretarty Voltaire Gazmin say they didn't tell the President even if they were getting reports of the debacle.
Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Defense Secretarty Voltaire Gazmin say they didn’t tell the President even if they were getting reports of the debacle.
They all looked and sounded stupid or they thought the senators and the public were stupid to believe what they were saying. Gazmin said that when he learned of the encounter at 11 a.m., he felt no urgency to tell the President. Besides, it was a police matter, he said.

Catapang also said he did not inform the President. Roxas said he didn’t realize the urgency of the incident.
Only suspended Police Chief Alan Purisima did not take the “I did not tell him” line. He asked that he be given time because he needs “to seek clearance from the President to answer the question.”

Suspended PNP Chief says he needs permission from the President to answer the question if he told the President about the Mamasapano 'incident' and what time.
Suspended PNP Chief says he needs permission from the President to answer the question if he told the President about the Mamasapano ‘incident’ and what time.
That’s because it was Purisima who informed the President of the debacle before he left for Zamboanga that day. He arrived there past 10 a.m.

This information surfaced when I remarked to a friend/source that it was obvious that everybody is covering up for the President, who should be made accountable for the death of the 44 SAF commandos.

The source said, “The senators were asking the wrong question. They asked Mar, Gazmin, and Catapang when they told the President. The persons they were asking did not inform the President about the Mamasapano incident. It was the President who informed them.”

Oh.

So that was it. Roxas, Gazmin, and Catapang were not lying. Perhaps if they were asked the right question, something like , “Did the President inform you or mention to you anything about an operation against two high-value terrorists?,” they would have answered truthfully. Perhaps.

Let’s see if they will be truthful when the senators ask them the right question in the next hearing.

The President tells SAF he knew of the 'incident' early.
The President tells SAF he knew of the ‘incident’ early.
This is what the President told members of the SAF at Camp Bagong Diwa early hours of Jan. 30 which confirms that he knew of the Mamasapano tragedy early:

It was a suicide mission of well-trained and dedicated police officers willing to die for the Motherland. Let us not dilute their heroic sacrifice by making it appear that they were cajoled or fooled into the battlefield. They were professional law enforcers.

I dont think they were fooled into the battlefield. They were outsmarted by the MILF and the BIFF by using Marwan as bait. Marwan is a hot potato. Nobody wants to be around him. He is being hunted not only by everybody in s.e. asia but also by the us and aussies. MILF and BIFF gave away Marwan. It was reported that the informers are now hiding with the BIFF. SAF was eager to act upon the information. They went in, the booby traps were the signal. MILF knew where to go and block the other SAFs.

I dont know what congress is trying to do. Can you prevent this from happenning again through legislation? Purisima should just take the blame. It will save everybody the trouble.

it was clear that SAF commandos who perished in that massacre (NOT a misencounter as what iqbal insists) WERE left on their own CONSIDERING the several radio calls of SINSP pabalina at the TCP, SAF for reinforcements upon sensing they were surrounded and outnumbered. they held their ground to the last man hoping to be rescued but nothing came until the radio silence.

noynoy already knew that early what’s happening on the ground BUT did nothing to reinforce the beleguered SAF troops. being a hollow head himself noynoy’s will and disposition is only applicable on video games where any contest can be repeated once a player loses a game.

i am not for an all out war against the MILF because the poor and helpless civilians will be the first casualty and affected when another armed confrontation between the governmet troops and rebels happens. what i want is the accountability that should be accepted by anyone who had a hand in this operation PARTICULARLY the president and his BFF allan purisima who is not in a position to direct or even give advice being in SUSPENSION and to include napenas who continuously shield the most guilty!

Given what has now been established as the carnage that
happened to the SAF troopers, General Espina is correct in
demanding, at the very least, an explanation from the MILF for the “overkill.”

While most people pointed to the absence of coordination as
the cause of the death of the 44 Mamasapano heroes, General
Espina correctly pointed out that the same does not and will never justify the overkill of the SAF troopers.

It is hard to believe that the MILF fighters did not recognize the SAF troopers. When they did, they should have regarded them as “peace partners” and not as
    enemies.

Even as we expect the MILF to point to the BIFF as the group
responsible for the overkill, the MILF still needs to explain why they did not fight the BIFF and fought instead the SAF?

  18. Former military and police officers in Congress have challenged President Aquino to “step up” and take full responsibility for the botched Special Action Force (SAF) operation in Mamasapano on Jan. 25 that ended in the massacre of 44 commandos.

Representatives Ashley Acedillo and Gary Alejano of Magdalo, Leopoldo Bataoil of Pangasinan province, Romeo Acop of Antipolo and Samuel Pagdilao Jr. of ACT-CIS said the President must answer three burning questions surrounding the SAF raid against Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias “Marwan,” and his deputy Basit Usman:

    — When did he first know about the deadly clash between the SAF troopers and the Moro rebels?

    — What did he do when he found out about the operation?

    — What happened after he gave orders to the police and military to deal with the unfolding SAF rout?

“There are no threats of a coup in the office. We just need to answer the public’s questions,” said Acop who noted that the group does not support calls for the President to step down “because we do not want the alternative which might be more dangerous.”

“Declaring I am responsible is not enough. We want answers,” said Acedillo, who noted the conflicting and misleading statements of police and military officials on the tragedy.

The group was reacting to rife speculation that the President knew about the SAF mission jump-off from resigned PNP Director General Alan Purisima in the early hours of Jan. 25; that Aquino broke the news to the military generals who flew with him to Zamboanga City that morning; and that Aquino was swayed from rescuing the SAF troops to save the peace pact with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

    Show decisive leadership

A joint statement read by Pagdilao said: “We call on the President to STEP UP and show decisive leadership befitting the father of one nation and as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police by directing them to unite against a common enemy. Bickering at this time is counterproductive.”

“I did not know that that was not true. And I did not know that the 84th was also dragged into the fight in the early afternoon. If we suppose you text your friend so that you’d meet at the [Mall of Asia], is it that easy for you to go there immediately?” Aquino said.

What PNoy, Purisima texted each other on Jan. 25
    ABS-CBNnews.com
    Posted at 02/23/2015 11:52 AM

Below are the text messages between President Aquino and then suspended Philippine National Police (PNP) Alan Purisima on the morning of January 25, 2015, when Special Action Forces (SAF) encountered Moro rebels after killing international terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan.

First text message to PNOY was sent on January 25, Sunday:

    5:45AM
“Sir good morning, for info, SAF elements implemented oplan vs high value targets. as of now, result indicate that marwan was killed and 1 saf trooper wounded; body of marwan left behind but pictures were taken; troopers are now withdrawal phase and progress report to follow.

    7:36AM
PNOY: Why was it left behind? the other two targets?

    7:48AM
PURISIMA: Sir, accordingly, when nearest target from the line of approach is M1, and when they hit the primary target, the other house where Basit Usman was located, reacted and fired at troopers… there were about 15-20 armed elements, it was about 4:30am and it was decided that they pull out after gathering pictures and other evidence, they were not able to reach secondary target, sir.

    7:59AM
PNOY: If i remember correctly, 160 SAF troopers involved plus provisions for other pnp and afp units to assist, terrain is flat and clear as opposed to upland, forested or jungle terrain. why could they not contain/overwhelm the 15-20 opposing force? are they still in contact with the other two targets? if not, and opposing force escaped, are we now back to square one?

    8:17AM
PURISIMA: they are presently in contact with reinforcing elements with BIFF, the containment forces are in contact right now, they are supported by mechanized and artillery support sir…

    8:18AM
PURISIMA: the local target Basit and his group, the first group engaged by main effort group.

    8:41AM
PNOY: review your earlier and latest texts they differ on which was engaged first.

    8:45AM
PURISIMA: the first target was M1, where they were able to neutralize, the group of basit retaliated which was 100m away.

    10:16AM
PNOY: Basit should not get away

    11:38AM
PURISIMA: Sir, as of the moment the main effort is withdrawing, we still have contact and we will hit them again.

    6:20PM
PURISIMA: Sir, latest report from operating elements in Maguindanao say, that securuity elements engaged by MILF/BIFF, suffered heavy casualties, reportedly overrun, CCCH and IMT in the area retrieving casualties, the main effort is still in the process of rendezvous with other SAF and AFP elements.

  37. MPRivera MPRivera

    HEBSA?

aaaahhh! tama nga. His Ensanity, Benigno Simeon Aquino.

    bagay nga.

  38. saxnviolins saxnviolins

At first they were evasive. Walang makasagot sa mga tanong. After several weeks, now they have become expansive, even sharing the text messages between Alan Purisima and HEBSAm empathy (or HEBSAm decency).

Simple lang ang dapat gawin, kung hindi kasali sa Moro-Moro (pun) si Grace Poe and her committee.

Subpoena the telecom provider of HEBSAm balls and Purisima. I’m sure the text messages are sitting in some telecom server somewhere. That way, we can get the whole exchange, kung meron man, instead of choice cuts, cherry-picked.

Better yet, bakit hindi i-leak yan, a la wikileaks. Wala bang decenteng tech guy diyan na nandidiri sa kasinungalingan? People leaked for lesser reasons – partying daw ni Erap, SALN ni Corona, etc.

  39. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Konting anecdote. How did Manning get the mountain of leaks to give to Julian Assange?

He worked on the government secure computer, bringing a Lady Gaga CD. But the Lady Gaga CD was rewritable. Saksak sa cd drive, then he copied the music files onto the hard drive, and played the music. So the rewritable CD was freed up. He now wrote the leaks onto the Lady Gaga CD, and after work, walked away with that massive leak.

[From “This Machine Kills Secrets”, by Andy Greenberg. It also details how Daniel Ellsberg copied the Pentagon Papers, working page by page with the then, new technology, the photocopier (xerox machine)]

There are many ways to skin a cat. Kung gustong ilahad ng tech guy ang kasinungalingan, he can find ways to write the text to some medium, and send it to some newspaperman/woman. He can even send it by email, using the TOR browser (The Onion Router). Hindi kita ang IP address mo diyan. What big brother would see would be an IP address from say, Germany, or Norway.

Subok na yan. I took TOR for a spin once, and checked my email. Yahoo emailed me saying soembody in Sweden was accessing my email. Yahoo knows that I live in Eastern USA, and hardly move from here.

  40. LCsiao LCsiao

^ That is, assuming there is a ‘decent’ tech guy out there with ‘balls,’ knowing full well what had happened to the likes of Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden et al.

  41. LCsiao LCsiao

I think any would-be whistle-blower in this case knows that s/he will not only be going against this godawful regime but also its chief backer, the US of A.

  42. saxnviolins saxnviolins

    1. Manning blabbered, that is why he got caught. It was not a tech slip-up.

    2. There is no national security involved in the text messages between HEBSAm decency and Alang puri. The interest is personal to them; it is, in fact, in the interest of the nation, to have the facts revealed,

It is the HEBSAm manners and Alang puri who “opened the door” when they disclosed some of their text messages. He who opens the door, by introducing some evidence, even if inadmissible, cannot object to cross-examination on matters related to the evidence, the door to which, he opened.

This is also related to the term “quibbling” used by the Supreme Court to decide the case of Cadet Cudia, the lying PMA cadet. Quibbling occurs when one tells a partial truth, to create a false impression. By selectively disclosing facts, one may create an impression different from, or even opposite to what may be concluded if all the facts were disclosed. So to obviate any quibbling by HEBSAm balls and Alang puri, the Senate should ask for the transcript of the entire exchange for the whole day, from the telecom provider.

Or, the tech guy with balls can copy it to a thumb drive, and send it to some newspaperman/woman. He can even send it first to some friend abroad (Singapore, etc.), and ask that friend to mail it anonymously back to the Philippines.

Better yet, let him send it to Aling Conching. Let us see if they have the balls to butt heads with Aling Conching. After all, the text messages may be basis for some charge, usurpation of authority by the Alang Puri, and violation of the suspension order by the HEBSAm sense.

  43. From the posted article:”Only suspended Police Chief Alan Purisima did not take the “I did not tell him” line. He asked that he be given time because he needs “to seek clearance from the President to answer the question.”

“Suspended PNP Chief says he needs permission from the President to answer the question if he told the President about the Mamasapano ‘incident’ and what time.

“That’s because it was Purisima who informed the President of the debacle before he left for Zamboanga that day. He arrived there past 10 a.m.”

    o, di ba? 5:45 a.m. pala.

  44. LCsiao LCsiao

    sax,

going back to your earlier point, that is again assuming that the Senate (as well as whichever body is investigating, including Tia Conching’s) isn’t in on the ‘moro-moro’ whitewash in favor of… whatever he’s called.
