When Duterte took on Pope Francis

Living up to his macho image of a crime buster that discriminates no one, in Tagalog, “walang sinasanto,” Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte took on the well-loved Pope Francis whose arrival in the Philippines last January caused him to be stuck in traffic he had to pee in his car.

Last Monday at his declaration as PDP-Laban presidential candidate in lieu of former barangay captain Martin Diño, who filed his certificate of candidacy for president last Oct. 16 but withdrew later as the the poll body included him in the list of nuisance candidates (the Comelec has yet to decide on Duterte’s substitution of Diño), Duterte was in his element spewing “P..I” in abandon, according to news reports.

He cursed traffic in Metro Manila. He related his ordeal last January: “From the hotel to the airport, alam mo inabot kami ng… limang oras. Sabi ko bakit? Sabi pinasarado daw.” A friend told him that the road closure and the traffic jams were due to the arrival of Pope Francis.

He told the adoring crowd: ” Gusto kong tawagan, ‘Pope, p.. I.. ka, umuwi ka na. ‘Wag ka nang bumisita dito.”

The video clip of the speech showed his supporters laughing enjoying the mayor’s story.

Not all cheered him. One of those who found his tirade against the Pope offensive was Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

Villegas said,” When a revered and loved and admired man like Pope Francis is cursed by a political candidate and the audience laugh, I can only bow my head and grieve in great shame. My countrymen has gone to the dregs.”

In a statement, Villegas warned against persons who kill people and indulges in adultery, which Duterte takes pride of having done and is still doing: “What the world desperately needs now is leadership by example. We have so many leaders in office and many more aspiring to sit in office but are they examples of good citizenship? If the leaders we choose are to be leaders for national progress they must be visionaries and exemplary.

“Corruption is indeed a great scourge of Philippine politics.

“The usual face of corruption that we recognize easily is stealing from public funds. Corruption, like a monster, is a devil with many faces. Killing people is corruption. Killing is a crime and a sin whether it is done by criminals or public officials no matter what the intention.

“Adultery is corruption. It makes married love cheap and uses people for pleasure. Adultery corrupts the family; it destroys children and victimizes the weak. Vulgarity is corruption. When we find vulgarity funny, we have really become beastly and barbaric as a people.”

“Is this the leadership by example that Mayor Duterte excites in us? Is this the leadership by example that makes a public official deserving of the title ‘Honorable’? I grieve for my country….!, “ Villegas lamented.

Former North Cotabato mayor Manny Piñol, a Duterte supporter tried to contain the damage, saying what the mayor said “ was merely an expression that comes almost naturally from Duterte’s mouth and peppers almost all of his public discourses.”

Yesterday, Duterte said he will contact Pope Francis. “I would address myself to the highest hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church. If you think I have offended — which, in the first place, I never really meant to do it — kung hindi ninyo ako mapatawad, the hierarchy o yung Vatican, sabihin ninyo: ‘We are offended and we demand that you withdraw from the presidential contest.’ And I will tomorrow withdraw. Walang problema ‘yan.”

Of course, the Pope would not tell him that. So mura pa more.

I don’t want a psycho and a maniac to be the president of Philippines. Not a good role model to the youth. Won’t vote for him.

  2. chi chi

    Agree to that Mike #1.

  3. Mike Mike

It was fun watching him and I admit I enjoyed some of it. But the line has to be drawn somewhere. No one curses my Pope.

Putang ina mo, Duterte. Umuwi ka na sa Davao. Huwag mo na kaming guluhin dito.

  6. Teka, okey na sana. I won’t be part of this election. I won’t be party to voting another incompetent to Malacañang. Kaso pwede na palang bumoto yung walang biometrics. Siguro kagaya nung 2010, I’ll just leave the space blank.

    ————–

  7. Mike Mike

Tongue. Kung ganon ang siste. Kay Miriam nalang siguro ako. Kahit mabigat sa aking kalooban. 😳

  8. Mike Mike

Sana nalang mag milagro at biglang mag back out si Miriam at may mag substitute ng matino-tino. Haysssss!!! Wishful thinking. 😃

  9. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Looks like an attempt at humor to me; crass though it may be.

Reminds me of Erap’s ipasa-salvage ko ang Mrs. ko, para kay Ms. Colombia (Ms. Universe held in the Philippines, batch ni Ruffa Gutierrez). I remember the uproar of the feminists, including my classmate, who is now some somebody in the international feminist circles.

  10. Mike Mike

SNV, a lot of Catholics are not laughing at his jokes. 😅

  11. Mike Mike

Baka umurong yung dalawa at isa nalang ang matira. 😜

  12. LCsiao LCsiao

Ang masasabi ko lang, puro sideshows. Walang pinagkaiba sa showbiz. Kawawang Pilipitnas.

Just like most of the “uproars” it would not take very long for the majority to ” forget” about it and find another good reason to change their minds.. like a yo-yo and as unprincipled as the next guy, the masses will vote for someone who can only say what they wanted to hear,, even it they are brazen Lies…Duterte joined the race without any clothes to cover his records past, including his alleged violation of human rights and legal rights of suspected criminals and yet was leading in some surveys..And made some unescusable gaff and just about all the self-righteous is after his hide..

I’ll wait what the Pope has to say, if he has anything to say on this issue..

  14. chi chi

Mike #11… a pati yung ikatlo umurong pa.

  15. chi chi

That’s right tongue, “no one curses my Pope”.

  16. chi chi

#7. Mike, may choice ka pa. Ayaw mo ba kay Roy Seneres? hehe….

  17. Mike Mike

    #17
Chi, I might actually consider Seneres. 😃

  18. Mike Mike

So far ito palang nakita ko. Pag nanalo, meron tayong supply ng kape araw araw. Hehehe. Hmmmmm Google pa more. 😊

  19. chi chi

  20. Read this:

    http://www.interaksyon.com/article/120949/editorial–tangina-this

    Brilliantly written.

“Honest is not the same as brazen. It is one thing to never apologize, quite another to not know where to draw the line….

“Fear of the law is a good thing. What shall we make of any leader who has none of it? Leave any leader so unquestioned and it is a thin line that would separate Duterte’s Davao from Ampatuan’s Maguindanao.”

  21. More from the Interaksyon editorial:

When Duterte curses on national television, and then curses again to apologize, and then again to emphasize his explanation, we laugh nervously, and inside we shudder. When he plays mall-Santa Claus to a bevy of female groupies to casually explain his “fascination” with women, and when he declares: “Look, this is who I am,” we see and hear the thing that we should fear greater than the man, and even greater than his myth: We hear and see the language – and the body language – of impunity.

When Duterte looks you in the eye, it is not to convince you of his sincerity. It is to ask you: “What are you going to do about it? About the murders I say I committed, the death squads I’ve unleashed, the bigamy I claim, my womanizing that you can only envy, the example I will set for your children by my words and by my actions – all the untold things I will do, the yet unimagined path I bulldoze on the way to a clean, safe, and prosperous future I will make for all of you, mga putanginang magpasalamat nalang kayo. What will you do? Why would you stop me? Why would you dare?”

  22. The editorial didn’t spare the Pimentels and PDP-Laban:

Sen. Koko Pimentel and the PDP-Laban say they are working with their candidate. They’ve long been urging him to curb the cussing and tone down the nonchalance about extrajudicial murder. Sen. Koko talks about Duterte as if he were a hired dancer at a Liberal Party sortie in Laguna. In truth, it is Koko Pimentel and his old man who are tailoring their performance to Duterte’s spoiled bidding. The mayor has them by the instincts of the once-relevant and now anchorless PDP-Laban as just another political party desperate to be a player. At least Duterte is no hypocrite. The Pimentels – the elder a human rights victim, once a human rights champion – are not only hypocritic, they are deluded.

For the perplexing Pimentels, the only problem is packaging. They care not that ultimately they foist upon Filipinos a Faustian farce. Buy into, invest in, force and fear – for swift justice, quiet streets, and profit that cares not what we sold.

  23. Who wrote that? Tagos sa buto. But still, read the comments below the article and you’re back to this uneasy feeling that I can’t even explain.

OMG

I like him but in the process that he told something stupid about our Pope, I now realized how dangerous this president might be.

She says there is a thin line between Duterte’s Davao and Ampatuan’s Maguindanao. That is a leap of logic worthy of Bob Beamon.

I-google niyo kung masyado kayong bata, to recognize the name Bob Beamon.

    Below is a counterpoint opinion.

Of course, as is usual, ang botohan sa atin is a choice of lesser of evils, especially since you have a quintessential incompetent like Marred Roxas, a Born-
Again-Filipina like Llamanzares, and a dark horse (oops, pony pala) like Binay.

Mag-mu-muni-muni muna ako with a Red Horse.

  36. Mike Mike

Yan ang problema SNV. Kung baga sa multiple choice ang sagot diyan ay none of the above. Kaya lang anong gagawin natin? Choose the lesser evil o choose nalang kung sinong sikat? Hayssss!!!!

  37. vic vic

Whether or not, comes Election time, there will be a New President Elected…and if Duterte is not disqualified due to issues of late filing or mis substitution, he will go all the way…the Contest will be among the the possible candidates..Roxas, Binay (if he is not indicted before the election for his alleged plundering) Poe if the SC rules on her Citizenship and Residency with finality…

My choice will be Mar/Robredo..But since all of my Direct relatives are Living and Residing in Duterte’s Kingdom of Davao City and Loving, nothing, even bribes can change their minds…Those are the people that know the man they will be sending to Malacanang…they hope…

And in this side, Our new PM been “called” Hypocrite for having his children Nannies paid for by the taxpayers..he is entitled to..but during the campaign, he is against the Universal Child Care allowances program by the Conservative and said that he will donate his back to the Govt..and instead tax the wealthy and extra 1% to increase the childcare allowances for the poor and low income..

Right now he has one extra Domestic helper than the last PM (7 instead of 6 ) he has to let go one of them

  38. Mike Mike

It’s about the rule of law. You simply cannot just kill a suspected criminal. What if it turns out that the person you killed is only being framed and is actually innocent? Who do you rely on to prove that a person is guilty of a crime? Your henchmen? What if your trusted men has a personal vendetta against a person and told you that that person is a drug pusher? How sure are you that your style of justice will not be taken advantage of? Many are clamoring for an iron fist rule against notorious criminals. Every day, many fell victims to criminals as we can read from the news and on social media. It’s a popular clamor. It might be a “good” precedent to a good and wise president but will definitely become a bad and dangerous one to a corrupt and evil president.

  40. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Agreed. That part I ignored. Wala talagang depensa ang Goyang na yan.

But like the Desiderata says, “Listen to others, for even the dull and the ignorant (in this case, a former Goyang stooge), they too have their story (analysis/good points). His being a Goyang stooge does not detract from the truth of the points in the article.

  41. #38. Napa-google tuloy ako to know who Bob Beamon is. Fascinating story.

  42. saxnviolins saxnviolins

Thin line daw between Duterte’s Davao and Ampatuan’s Maguindanao.

Why do I say leap of logic na mala-Bob Beamon? O Davao?

Now, in the case of drug pushers, will they feel safer in Davao? Or Ozamiz?

  43. Chuchay Fernandez pala, if I’m not mistaken you’ve mentioned her here a few times (Or was it in Vera Files?)

  44. Duterte was one of the appointed OICs after Cory declared her revolutionary gov’t. Duterte was OIC Vice Mayor. Binay (he is 70 yrs old like Duterte), Duterte, Pasay’s Duay Calixto, and here in San Pedro, Calex Cataquiz a small sample of those OIC Mayor appointees. Whats their common denominator?

Their family dynasties have dominated their local politics to this day.

  45. MPRivera MPRivera

LOL.
