Game changers: SC decision on Poe and AMLC report on Binay

Next week’s surveys should give us a clearer picture of the sentiments of the Filipino voters.

By then, we would know whose campaign is struggling from collapsing and whose campaign is pulling away.

The latest surveys that we got this week (Pulse Asia for ABS-CBN) which put Grace Poe leading (28 percent) with just a few percentage points over Rodrigo Duterte (24 percent), who dislodged Jejomar Binay (21 percent) in the second place and Mar Roxas closely following with 20 percent, was conducted a few days before the Supreme Court declared that Poe is qualified to run for the presidency of the Philippines.

Miriam Defensor-Santiago, by the way, held on to her three percent.

The survey was conducted March 1 to 6 while the Supreme Court decision on Poe was released March 8.

The Magdalo survey conducted March 2-4 also had the same result: Poe, 31 percent; Duterte, 29.5; Binay, 21.5 ; Roxas, 14.3; and Santiago, 3.3.

Even before the High Court’s decision that removed a heavy cloud over Poe’s candidacy for president, she was already recovering from the dip that the Commission on Election decision to disqualify her had caused. It was a two percentage points increase from 26 percent that she registered in the Feb. 16 to 27 survey that Pulse Asia also conducted for ABS-CBN.

Also, even more than a week ago, Binay’s “recovery” seems to have stopped. From 24 per cent last February, he slid down to 21 percent first week of March, allowing Duterte who gained two percentage points to overtake him in second place.

No wonder, Duterte, who was noticeably soft on Binay before, has joined the call for the vice president to answer the report of the Anti-Money Laundering Council that he amassed “billions” from infrastructure projects and hid it through back accounts of dummies.

The AMLC report, as reported by the Philippine Daily Inquirer, also revealed that Binay in October 2014, sent to an account in Hongkong P100 million through Philrem Service Corp, a money remittance company, that is currently embroiled in the $81 million hacking of the Bangladesh Bank account with the US Federal Reserve and money laundering scandal involving a Philippine bank.

The P100 million remittance was reportedly facilitated by the law firm where the Vice President’s daughter, Makati Rep. Abigail Binay, now running for Makati City mayor, is a partner.

Binay through his spokesman Joey Salgado has denied Inquirer’s story on the AMLC report. Binay’s United Nationalist Alliance slammed the report as “false” and “outdated”. UNA dubbed it as a politically motivated “well planned black propaganda.”

The Liberal party, as expected, is hammering it hard on Binay. Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice challenged Binay to issue a waiver for Philrem to release records of his remittances abroad.

LP spokesman Rep. Barry Gutierrez said the public’s lack of trust on Binay is his own doing.“If (the report) is already dated, then why didn’t he answer it before? If it’s not true, why didn’t the VP himself face the Senate to prove that it’s false?” he said.

In our man-on-the street interviews, there were a number who said they will go for Binay despite the allegations of corruption against him. Some believe Binay’s line that the allegations are untrue while others said if he is corrupt, he has proven to be a competent leader.

Yet, in the Pulse Asia survey last January on the voters most important consideration in choosing a presidential candidate, number one is “Untarnished character/reputation, not corrupt”, 28 percent followed by a clear program of action, 14 percent and extensive experience in governance, 12 percent.

Let’s see next survey how these values manifest in the light of what are being exposed in media and how it will impact on the candidates’ campaign.

    Let Poe run and lose, I don’think she’ll win. Only SWS owned by her uncle Mangahas and Pulse Asia owned by Noynoy’s relative are showing that she is winning. It’s so obvious that the AQUINOS and the COJUANGCOS are putting their stake on Poe as she has proven that she can do the dirty work of whitewashing the Mamasapano investigation. Being a lovechild make her want to prove that she is not our regular anak sa labas. She also has no qualms about DISOBEYING the constitution to further her ambition. I can see a reincarnation of FIRST gentleman Mike Arroyo in her husband who is now working as consultant at San Miguel Corp. She already buried and compromised herself when she spent billions on her campaign. She also has ESCUDERO as her Rasputin. Too many reasons not to vote for her but the biggest one is her being a PREK teacher…how can a Boston College graduate not secure a decent job? This only mean that she is mediocre like Noynoy and she is only good with WHEELING and DEALING. What a very ambitious and opportunist…she has nothing to offer. She is a NECROPOLITICIAN at best.

    Actually the ideal scenario is for the Electoral Body to study and recommend to the Congress what reform is needed to get implemented for the electoral process, not the other way around..And if necessary the congress could have the proposed reforms reviewed by the SC before it will be enacted and allocated funding so this last minute Brouhaha plus more brouhahas should not have to happen too many unnecessary dramatics.

    bakit kaya?

    #4 Noynoy and Mar Roxas are friends of these big time mining owners so they are protected by the government. In the last debate, Duterte mentioned that he was against MINING for the many negative impact to the environment.

    It’s gonna be a close fight to the finish between Duterete, Poe and Binay. But Binay seems to be loosing some steam.
    For VP, it’s toss-up between Chiz and Bongbong.

  7. Ana Duran Ana Duran

    #6 I’ve been reading comments on blogs and I really have not seen that much people rooting for Chiz so I wonder why Chiz is even considered a contender? I think Duterte is a runaway winner. He is much superior candidate having served in 3 branches of government, as a mayor (excutive), fiscal(judicial) and congressman(legislative).

    I’m from Zambales pero wala rin po kaming alam na dahilan bakit hindi ma stop ang mining dito. Gov. Ebdane supported gloria the last election, mukhang nagkaayos na sila ng current government in the name of monkey business.

  9. MPRivera MPRivera

    I’m not too keen on voting for Duterte as I don’t believe in his style of dealing with criminals. We still have to follow due process. But I have to admit that he is one of the better choices among the presidentiables aside from Miriam.

    I’ve listened to most of the candidates for president…I really don’t like candidates who promised everything free to everyone to have as if our tax money is his/her to giveaway just like that. Its good to help but its better to help others to help themselves. Many candidates pitch what needs to be done in ones town or province to improve something, and yet fail to see what really is ailing our country and how to solve them. I’m going for Duterte here. He knows and understand the real problem, i.e corruption, criminality, and implementation of the programs of government! He is the only one out of the four who can see what needs fixing and at his age, he means well and will do it! so DUTERTE for me.

    In Davao City, residents are free to roam around even in wee hours relatively left unmolested. Its not a rare sight to see commuters make use of their laptops, smartphones, iPods inside jeepneys and buses to the envy and pleasant surprise of non-Davao residents and visitors from Manila and elsewhere. Taxi meters are secure and its drivers are not allowed to charge extra.

    The city has the distinction of having the MOST number of NGO’s, advocacy groups, and activist groups in the country. All political colors are present in the city. In addition, there’s the MNLF, MILF, and the NPA in the neighboring hinterlands.

    The city’s broad coastlines poses a serious challenge to secure. Its three wide accessible highways to and fro connects the city to Bukidnon-Cagayan de Oro, Sarangani-Cotabato provinces, and Butuan-Surigao cities makes it a major,juicy tempt for contrabandos and drug peddlers.

    So how does Davao City make its streets and communities safe? A confluence of 3 major inseparable factors; that of a vigilant and caring citizens collaborating with a disciplined police/military forces, and Digong Duterte’s uncorrupted leadership.

    This mix if analyzed and studied closely is not an easy task but can be replicated throughout the country with a mandated President Duterte.

  14. yinyang yinyang

    @ Mike, in Davao City criminal elements are given a fair warning 3 times to stop/leave the city…or else.

    Salvageable drug dependents are housed in a modern drug rehab facility and given a 2thousand pesos per month allowance to help them stand. Women offenders and convicts prison house does NOT have any bars!

    Thus, any Dabawenyo supporting Duterte’s candidacy cannot be faulted for being such a rah-rah campaigner. True, Davao City with its close to 2 million residents and transients is no Utopia. It has its fair share of esteros and informal settlers but its tamed in comparison to other metro areas.

  15. yinyang yinyang

    Majority of Duterte’s supporters follow him in his choice for the VP slot–Alan Cayetano. The young senator is

    progressive, untainted with corruption issues whose intellectual demeanor complements Duterte’s bold visions.

  16. yinyang yinyang

    Digong Duterte should probably be complimented even if he loses in the counting:

    1) he proved that given the right impetus vast masses, especially the youth even without any monetary consideration can be moved to its feet–taking cudgels for him campaigning vigorously. Unprecedented in Philippine history;

    2) he openly challenges Telcos to spend their money to defeat him because a Duterte presidency would mean an end to monopoly in telecommunications;

    3) publicly sends warning to employers that he will end the demeaning, dehumanizing 6 months-contract practice among entry-level employees;

    4) he shuns contributions from Oligarchs and companies doing business with the govt., nor accepts narco-money;

    5) he was able to secure a standing commitments from the MILF, MNLF, CPP-NPA to hold talks with him if elected and possibly pave way to laying down of arms and possible integration to the mainstream. A Peace now in Sight!!

  17. Ana Duran Ana Duran

    #15 Sad to say that Cayetano does not have the same appeal as Duterte. He is an elitist and he cannot hide it. He was a congressman and his wife is the mayor and yet the town is not considered peaceful nor progressive. Cayetano has not written any law nor he has helped any segment of the society. He is just known for black propaganda of Binay and FG Arroyo.

  19. MPRivera MPRivera

    #20 Roxas is really in there for the power and money. He does not to deserve to be given another chance much more his wife who is like him would do everything foul to be elected.

  21. MPRivera MPRivera

    there is a circulating post on FB that tentacles of maruhas at enjaz in riyadh, saudi arabia, a money sender correspondent of ML Padala, WU, ABS-CBN money transfer and banks worldwide is giving out free remittance charges plus dilaw na kamiseta printed with “KAY MAR ROXAS TAYO”. a remitter is required to fill up a form in the guise of survey kuno where names of presidential candidates are written and have to be encircled. kapag roxas daw, LIBRE ang bayad sa padala plus yung kulay taeng t-shirt. pero kapag pangalan ng kalaban ay pasensiya.

  22. Ana Duran Ana Duran

    #22 I won’t be surprised if Mar Roxas is doing this…he issing the funds from Yolanda. He’ll do everything to win this election including selling his soul to the devil.

  23. MPRivera MPRivera

    when roxas made a way for ngoyngoy for the presidency, i felt so honored in supporting a man i thought was worth it. ngoyngoy won and roxas promised to make an I SHALL RETURN in 2016 to fulfill a mission of serving the people. akala ko ay talagang marangal nga siya if to refer sa mga mail exchanges namin na akala ko ay tunay na personal sa kanya. tuloy ang supot, este support ko sa kanya lalo nu’ng maging cabinet secretary siya. dami niyang magagandang balak at plano para sa kanyang mga nasasakupan.

  26. MPRivera MPRivera

    what makes digong the most voteable candidate in this coming election?

    he believes the people is his machinery by not accepting donations unless unconditional and not exxagerating his campaign platforms and accomplishments like roxas and his pet-ron, the ngoyngoy.
