There’s an expression in English,”Cutting off the nose to spite the face” which refers to a person’s self-destructive action as he hits back at someone he thinks had done him wrong but his needless action actually hurts him more than the object of his anger.

That appears to be what President Duterte is doing against U.S. President Obama after his disastrous performance at the 2016 Asean summit in Vientiane Laos last week.

That sad thing about it is that, it is not himself that he is hurting but the country. And it was he who unnecessarily caused this series of snubs with his tirade against Obama in answer to a hypothetical question in a pre-departure for Asean summit press conference.

Duterte’s rancor over Obama’s snub – the White House cancellation of his meeting with Obama on the first day of the Asean 2016 summit and Obama’s failure to shake hands with him at the end of the East Asia Summit –is eating him up.

Even their brief meeting before the Wednesday Asean 2016 gala dinner which Malacañang drumbeaters made a big deal of, sounded like a put-down, as related by Duterte.

Duterte, in his speech before the Filipino community in Indonesia, said in the holding room he approached Obama and introduced himself:“President Obama, I’m President Duterte. I never made that statement; you can check it out. Check it out.”

Duterte said Obama tersely replied: “My men will talk to you.”

There was nothing from Obama that assured Duterte he believed him or understood him.

Obama’s version of the brief meeting as he told media was that of a chief executive on top of the situation:”I did shake hands with President Duterte last night. It was not a long interaction, and what I indicated to him is that my team should be meeting with his and determine how we can move forward on a whole range of issues.”

A week after the Asean summit, Duterte is still at it, revealing more behind the scenes happenings that he probably thought would show him he was able to score against Obama but only revealed his immaturity.

The other day, Duterte said it’s not true that he skipped the Asean-US and Asean-India meetings because “he was not feeling well” as announced by the Philippine delegation.

He revealed, “I purposely did not attend the bilateral talks between Asean countries and the president of the United States. Talagang ini-skip ko ‘yun…The reason is not I am anti-West. The reason is that I do not like the Americans. It’s simply a matter of principle for me.”

If it’s not true that he was not feeling well, what’s the reason he also skipped “Asean-India?”

Before Obama left Laos, he commented on Duterte’s style of carrying out his anti-drug campaign that has killed more than 2,000 people in less than three months of his presidency. ”We do want to make sure that the partnership we have is consistent with international norms and rule of law. So we’re not going to back off our position that if we’re working with a country, whether it’s on anti-terrorism, whether it’s on going after drug traffickers, as despicable as these networks may be, as much as damage as they do, it is important from our perspective to make sure that we do it the right way…’Because the consequences when you do it the wrong way, innocent people get hurt. And you have a whole bunch of unintended consequences that don’t solve the problem,” Obama said.

That did not sit well with Duterte who thinks it’s foreign intervention. Waving the Constitutional provision of “an independent foreign policy,” he discarded his prepared speech at the East Asia summit and presented photos of atrocities committed by American soldiers against Filipinos During the Philippine-American was more than a century ago to underscore his retort that Americans are in no position to lecture him on human rights.

That was the last event in the 2016 Asean and EAS summit. That was also Obama’s last Asean and AES meeting. He personally bid farewell to each and every leader- 16 in all – except Duterte.

Duterte’s tantrums are making a fool of his officials.

Foreign Secretary Oerfecto Yasay, Jr.
Foreign Secretary Oerfecto Yasay, Jr.

At Karen Davila’s morning show in ANC, Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay, Jr. stood pat with the official reason DFA released about the absence of Duterte in the Asean-US meeting that it was due to the Philippine President’s migraine.

Then ANC showed the video clip of Duterte’s revelation made the night before, that he did not attend the Asean-US meeting because “ I do not like the Americans. It’s simply a matter of principle for me.”

Yasay fumbled all over: “Maybe after I hear it, and if in fact he said it, I will talk to him and I will ask him what he meant and maybe at that time I could explain, but as of now, I would not even say that he said it because I did not hear what he allegedly said.”

Continuing his tirades against the Americans, Duterte said Monday he wants the U.S. Special Forces out of Mindanao as they are in danger of being kidnapped and killed by the bandit group Abu Sayyaf.

Special Forces in Mindanao was allowed starting with the administration of Gloria Arroyo supposedly to help combat terrorism. Their role has now evolved into monitoring China’s activities in the South China Sea.

The U.S. State Department said they have not received any formal notice from the Philippine government on the pull-out of U.S. Special Forces from Mindanao.

Yasay is leaving for Washington D.C. for a meeting with U.S. State Department Secretary John Kerry and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana is off to a meeting with US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and his counterparts in the ASEAN in Honolulu to discuss security issues in the region.

How are they going to explain the President’s latest announcement? That it’s a joke just like his announcement that the Philippines will leave the United Nations and form another group with China and some African countries?

Were DFA Sec Yasay and Defense Sec Lorenzana called by Uncle Sam or just plain na sumugod sila sa US to defend the indefensible?

  2. “How do you think the Phil. diplomatic community will try to explain all these to their host countries?” This was former Amb. Apolinario Lozada’s question in last night’s program at ANC. Did you watch it, Ellen? The guests were former senators Orly Mercado and Rene Saguisag – who were introduced as part of the senate who voted to kick out the US bases, former ambassador to the US Joey Cuisia, AmCham president John Forbes and Lozada.

They all agreed that the biggest problem of this new administration is COMMUNICATION. I think it was Orly who suggested that PDiggy stop all those marathon press briefings done overnight. He said the president does not need to announce all his moves or plans on the spur of the moment, the next day his spokesmen are contradicting each other in the media because they were asleep when the president announced a supposed policy, plan, strategy, what-have-you giving the image of chaos in the government itself.

    MISMO!

Especially now that media have found the magic phrase – “human rights” – that will trigger the buttons that sends the president into beastmode, PDiggy should avoid those verbose, full of incomprehensible, multi-directional, incoherent, impromptu speeches which puzzles even his close cabinet members. Someone in his team should have the balls to stop him when he’s going out of the script. Less talk, less mistake. Let the spokesmen do their jobs and answer questions only along pre-agreed directions already discussed among the cabinet and not him announcing new directives none of his official coterie have even heard of. In that way, the president statements are allowed plausible deniability giving him face-saving measures if and when official announcements are deemed unpopular, outright stupid or plain wrong. The spokesman takes the bullet for him.

digong taking a backseat? that will be the day. he’s attention seeker, and if anybody gets more attention than him, he’ll go into tailspin.

  4. roc roc

alpha and omega, methink, digong thinks he has god factor and can do no wrong. 16 million people agree with him. they’re quiet now after the fact, and maybe biting their tongues, shamed to admit they had made a big mistake.

“I’ll do better once I’m made president”, well, digong did not do better, and getting worse in fact.

he may have mega-communication problem, but digong is not letting up when he ought to. and the more people cover up for him, he wont get better.

his gabinete ought to get together and map out what is good for digong and the country. digong must understand that to play important rule does not mean he must have all the say, all the thinking, all the actions, and all the decisions. sometimes, he must be good listener too, and that means keeping quiet.

#3. Agreed. He enjoys stirring the wheels to all directions. Magkagulo na ang spindoctors but he’ll never be in backseat.

Tongue, Duterte thinks he can do no wrong with 16 million votes that brought him to power and 91 percent approval rating in his frist month. No advise can stop him.

    The man is the problem.

  7. “My men will talk to you”- Obama to Duterte.

It’s like saying, “Hindi kita ka-level.”

We cannot move forward if we will continue to deal with the past.”

Minsan natalakay dito “Should we take the President seriously?”

BFAR confirmed sightings of Chinese vessels in Benham rise.

During the 250th Anniversary of the Presidential Airlift Wing; terminated na ang joint patrols sa WPS.

Sabi nga niya “My gad I hate drugs.”

The man is the problem, specifically his addled brain and foul mouth. He doesn’t deserve the presidency, he deserves the mental asylum.

Pero, come to think of it, hindi tayo bebentahan ng China ng weapons nila lalo na’t alam nila na gagamitin din natin iyon laban sa kanila.

pinoys didnot like tuwid na daan, kaya ngayon liku-likong daan. hope war in the pacific will not come in his term for otherwise we may be fighting side by side with the chinese and north koreans against the japanese, south korean and americans.

  14. “The man is the problem”. I beg to disagree. The Filipinos are the problem.

Like it or not, he will rule us for the next 2,100 days. Unless he dies in his sleep or is incapacitated, assassinated, impeached, or overthrown.

If the past 75 is any indication of what’s coming, sad to say it this early, but it seems the overrated PDiggy will disappoint many of his fans. He is a president armed with but a mayor’s skills.

    OT

(Edgar) Matobato sa langit. Tamaan dapat magalit.

In particular, Lacson doubted Matobato’s statement that a certain terrorist suspect “Sali Makdum” was kidnapped in 2002 and was brought to the office of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Task Force (PAOCTF) supposedly to be killed.

Lacson denis. wala nang PAOCTF noong 2002.

Later, De Lima said she received information that the PAOCTF existed even after Lacson stepped down as police chief then.

Tama si Ping. Goyang disbanded the PAOCTF on April 16, 2001.

  17. I just finished last weekend watching 2 seasons of the iFlix movie “Narcos” which is a well-researched true story that captures the intricate web woven by the Colombian drug lords in Medellin and Cali and controlled by Pablo Escobar. Each season has ten one-hour episodes that got me glued on TV I finished the whole series of 20 hrs in just 2 days. LOL.

It’s basically about Colombia’s drug cartels – the violence, the women, widespread corruption, “Robin Hood” criminals, most importantly it shows how the US spy network, US DEA and official embassy departments work from within Colombia’s control and from without. It lets us peek into the exuberant lives of the cartel families, how they practically control even the military and police straight officers can no longer trust any of their men they are forced to train new recruits to insulate them from the corruption. I saw many parallels with our situation but it is exaggerated at this point to say we are becoming a narco-political state as many were made to believe during the election campaign. They have their own vigilantes much unlike ours. Their vigilantes are the opponents of the communist rebel FARC. They did better than the government forces because they defeated Escobar, with the help of course of America’s CIA. Their reach and brutality is a familiar scene.

I recommend you guys watch this. (I think it’s available in the Philippines through Netflix) But you can google websites where you can watch for free.

  18. @tongue-twisted….

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFD6DW0IaKE

LOL.

I seriously doubt the credibility of the witness. What’s funny is that after this senate hearing. Meron na naman hearing about Delima’s alleged involvement in drugs. Parang sirko na ala telenovela. Parang mga tanga.
I don’t like Delima and I hate it when she talks kahit di nagmumura. And I can’t forget what she and PNoy did to Corona. Namatay ang mama sa sama ng loob. BUT I doubt about the allegation that she receives money from drug lords, etc. The evidences so far presented by SDoJ is questionable especially the alleged bank deposit slips which has a transaction date on a good friday, a holiday.

I really find him weird when he quotes bible verses and at the same time being tolerant on EJK.

  24. chi chi

  25. I made a separate post on Cayetano’s masking tape issue with my column in Abante. Please make your comments on that issue in that thread.

    Thank you.

  26. Ellen, your article’s title was quoted by Manjit Bhatia in his somewhat daring and hostile article in SCMP, Duterte’s war on drugs in the Philippines can’t hide his policy incompetence last Sept 23, and I was going to tell you this when your website conked out.

    Excerpts:

Few can deny Duterte’s ugliness – from his crude nationalist populism and foul mouth to his mania for gun-toting, bloodthirsty vigilantism. So, is he just a bad boy or a psychopath?

Duterte is using the country’s drug problem to mask his inability to produce policies to alleviate the poverty and joblessness that afflict many Filipinos.

    He closes with:

Perhaps Duterte’s landslide election has made his ego swell to such an extent he has grown delusional. Whatever the case, his regime’s wanton bloodlust is neither the stuff of intelligent policymaking nor good governance. It’s murder, pure and simple. The rise of Duterte’s authoritarian populism is certain and, like it or not, “average Filipinos” will remain the regime’s victims.

Damn. I think this time, he will blast Bhatia with his foul mouth. Maybe he will even curse the whole of Hong Kong, not just it’s media.
