Lumbay, the all-around-girl (news courier, faith healer, caretaker) of barrio Guisijan in the province of Antique, sports a pendant with the picture of Ltsg Antonio Trillanes IV on one side and the Magdalo symbol (white sun rays against red and the letter K at the center) on the other side.
It’s actually a key chain, one of campaign items of Trillanes, a senatorial candidate under the Genuine Opposition.
In the beginning, Lumbay didn’t know who Trillanes is but she said she likes him because “Guapo siya.” It didn’t take long for her to know what Trillanes had done because people who saw the pendant would tell her, “Iboto ko siya kasi lumalaban sa katiwalian.” (I’ll vote for him because he fights iregularities.)
Now, Lumbay asks people to vote Trillanes because “Guapo na, lumalaban pa.”
At the Cash and Carry store in Makati, a bagboy happily accepted the pocket calendar that a Trillanes-for-senator volunteer was distributing. “Iboboto ko ito. Idol ko. Palaban kasi,” he said.
Similar incidents of receptiveness to Trillanes candidacy is repeated a hundred, even a thousand times, all over the country.
In his detention cell at the Marine brig in Fort Bonifacio, Makati City,the 35-year old just resigned navy officer, is overhelmed by the support for his candidacy of people from all walks of life. Four months ago, when he decided to run for senator even as an independent candidate, he had only his immediate family members and his fellow Magdalo officers.
It helped that he is included in the Genuine Opposition ticket.“ I’m getting support from certain individuals that I didn’t expect would help,” he said in an interview at the sidelines of hearings in the Makati Regional Trial Court and in Camp Aguinaldo of the cases filed against him in connection with what is commonly referred to as “Oakwood mutiny” on July 27, 2003.
Trillanes has to protect the identities of many of his supporters but those who are known to media are former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, lawyer Luis Sison of Bangon Pilipinas, political activist Herman Laurel, the civil-society dominated Black and White Movement, to name just a few.
Francisco Nemenzo, former University of the Philippines president, head of the militant Laban ng Masa, described Trillanes as “non-trapo”. “He personifies our advocacy of anti-trapo and anti-elite politics,” Nemenzo said.
Trillanes attributes the support he is getting to the desire of the people for a better government. “My candidacy embodies the people’s disdain of the present administration. All these time, the Arroyo administration has been saying, that we (Magdalo) were all alone in our fight. Now, we can say that the people are behind us.”
Trillanes said that these past four years, he has shown that he can sacrifice his life “if need be to protect their (the people) interest.”
Given that his victory would be a resounding slap on the face of Gloria Arroyo, will Malacañang allow him to win? If its only Arroyo’s will, “No”, he replied adding that “She has an idea what I can do in the Senate. I can check. I can use the powers of the Senate to check her abuse of power.”
Trillanes has no doubt at all that Arroyo will do everything, by hook or by crook, to make administration candidates win. “We have accepted the fact that GMA will cheat because it’s out of character for her not to do so. She will be exposed and will be vulnerable should the opposition win this coming election. We have to accept the fact that she will cheat.”
As to the fear of the public that the military would again be used as Arroyo’s cheating operators just like what happened in 2004, Trillanes said, “The military rank and file will not cheat. But the AFP can still be used under the cover of legitimate operations.”
He said the opposition with the help of non-government organizations are doing everything to foil plans of the administration to again thwart the will of the people.
Trillanes said considering the restrictions that his candidacy is being subjected to, foremost of which is no media access, he is touched by the tremenduous support he is getting . “I’m inspired to live up to their expectations,” he said.

I’m well aware that most Pinoys are behind the “Trillanes candidacy”. In fact ako I never mentioned if I was for or against him.
But by saying the above, are you saying that just because the majority have a certain view about a certain politician, that there is no room in this blog for a person who begs to differ or provides an alternative view?
If I recall right, democracy is about a healthy co-existence of all views from one end of the spectrum to another. This blog of course is a private blog and therefore not a democracy (as the arbitrary deletion/censoring of comments here has highlighted).
That is why I said earlier — it all depends on what this blog is about. Is it a fans club for anti-Gloria politicians? Or is it a venue for exchanging ideas? Maybe only Ms. Ellen can answer that. But ’til then, sorry na lang kayo. I am just airing my views here.

Personally, I welcome your views as I have always been open to views contrary to my own. I am with you when you said that “democracy is about a healthy co-existence of all views from one end of the spectrum to another”. Kung lahat tayo ay iisa lang ng pananaw, kahit mawala na ang 99% ng posts dito, it would not make any difference since one post will have represented all the others. To some extent, there is still some tolerance to conflicting views here- reason why I keep posting.
Trillanes being the topic, you are willing to give the guy some consideration if I recall a post you did some threads back. I may not like the way he went about airing his views through Oakwood, but I admire his courage and conviction. We still have a full month to go before we start writing names down on our ballots. Trillanes is still on my list until I get convinced to drop him.

I’m still checking on the tips I got that some names are highlighted and voters are being convinced indirectly convinced not to vote for them because they have pending cases in court. Ibig ipalabas na masasayang ang boto nila dahil hindi naman makakalabas ng kulungan ang iboboto nila regardless of whether or not they are in jail or likely to be jailed from now.
