Trillanes granted media access

Makati Regional Trial Court Judge Oscar Pimentel granted the request of detained Ltsg Antonio Trillanes IV, senatorial candidate of the Genuine Opposition, to allow media to have access to him in his detention cell.

The permission has set conditions like request should be made three days prior to the interview and questions should be submitted.

That’s not exactly okay but we have to count our blessings as of now. The fight for genuine freedom goes on.

Here’s Malaya’s full report by Ashzel Hachero:

THE Makati regional trial court yesterday allowed detained mutiny leader Antonio Trillanes IV, a senatorial candidate of the Genuine Opposition, to be interviewed by media.

Judge Oscar Pimentel of RTC Branch 148 imposed several conditions.

“To make sure that unnecessary statements will not be given, the reporters, journalists and other media people are advised and directed to submit to this Court their proposed questions and issues. Likewise, they are mandated to file their manifestation on when they intend to interview accused Antonio Trillanes IV and the time of such interview,” Pimentel said in a three-page decision.

Pimentel also required media men to file their manifestation three days before the planned interview. He said this is a matter of “courtesy” to Marine officers in Fort Bonifacio where Trillanes is detained. Media men should also get clearance from Trillanes’ custodians.

Pimentel on March 5 denied Trillanes’ petition to be allowed media interviews because Trillanes might give statements related to the coup d’état case he is facing.

This amounts to “prior restraint” and censorship which is frowned upon by the country’s Constitution, Trillanes said in a motion for reconsideration. He also told the court he would not give any statement on the case.

Trillanes’ lawyer, Reynaldo Robles, said his client welcomed Pimentel’s decision despite the restrictions.

He said it would enable Trillanes to air his platform of governance.

“He is very happy with the court’s decision though we lost so much time. Hopefully it will give him a chance to reach out and present his views and his plans as well as it would equalize the playing field since, compared to the other senatorial candidates, he has limited resources,” Robles said.

Robles said they are optimistic Trillanes will win. A recent survey of Social Weather Stations showed Trillanes in the 19th position from an earlier ranking of 23rd and 24th.

Trillanes, a former Navy officer, is facing coup charges along with 30 other junior officers for launching a mutiny in July 2003.

The officers are also facing charges before a military court.

  2. Good, now I can tell my friends in the Japanese media to interview Trillanes.

    What exactly is “genuine freedom”?

Is it the freedom to elect morons to office, encourage them to dance the ocho-ocho during campaigns, rally in the streets all year round, and exchange gossip on large-circulation broadsheets?

For that matter is democracy really about “freedom”?

one step to victory and truth!

wish sonny all the best and may he win his cause for the benefit of the suffering public under the hands of the predators who have nothing in their minds but to squeeze out the courage of the gallant men who dared to fight their criminal and evil deeds!

  6. Freedom, sadly, is the capacity to elect A MORON (PuroHanginDaw), A SELF-DECLARED LIAR, CHEAT, THIEF and strongly suspected SCHIZOPHRENIC like Gloria Macapa(ga)l to office.

Bumanat ka naman Mang Benigno Martinez, the ultimate kontrabida on whatever is good about the Philippines and in this particular case, to diminish a little convenience for Trillanes to be heard being a human being, a Filipino and someone who is seeking an elective position.

Why don’t you make an appeal to stop the granted media access to Trillanes? You are again diverting the issue.

For that matter, all who participate in the propagation of partisan gossip and hollow personality-based political discussion, not to mention low-brow appeal to populist sentiments such as worship of perceived victims of imagined “conspiracies” are themselves being used by one politician or the other.

Before we even think how some bozos are “entitled” to some privileges such as “access to the media”, let us first remember that these people are being prosecuted for rebellion — a very serious offense against the state. The fact of these peoples’ candidacy makes the story even more bizarre and ridiculous, in fact.

Pinoys are apparently too shallow to see the irony in a one-time mutineer who now “participates” in a process administered by the very State whose laws he took it upon himself to personally interpret.

And to think we are entrusting the selection of our future leaders on this comprehension-challenged lot.

they are letting pak-pak do his illegal actions due to the unprecedented donations he is giving his utu-uto followers. nothing more…who in his right mind will ever vote for this character. he maybe a good boxer but he is definitely not the people’s champ when rationality comes in.

great to see the 2 ads of Trillanes in abs-cbn during the TV patrol news this evening…i wish to see the others showing the mcapagal and joke-joke scam.

    Great news even with parameters!

  14. Chabeli Chabeli

    I agree w/ you, Chi.

Despite the conditions set forth, media access for Trillanes is a good thing. It will help his campaign.

  15. Chabeli Chabeli

    Ms. Ellen,

You say that “The permission has set conditions like request should be made three days prior to the interview and questions should be submitted…That’s not exactly okay but we have to count our blessings as of now. The fight for genuine freedom goes on.”

    Nothing good comes easy.

  16. chi chi

They subverted the will of the majority, ayan ang napala ng Pinas!

Pero nakaraan na ito and hope that this taught the elites and rich (sana nga) the lessons of respecting the will of the majority.

  17. chi chi

Chabs, where are you hiding lately, campaigning vigorously for someone? :-).

At least we will have a good chance to read what Trillanes wanted to say for a long time.

Ellen, is there no condition for taking photos? Baka pati dito ay takot sila!

  18. Chi, I don’t think there conditions for photos.

  19. MR, I already did my interview with Trillanes at the sidelines of court hearings.

Click here for the article that appeared last April 9.

But I will interview him last week first week of May.

  20. chi chi

Thanks, Ellen.

    BenignO:
Trillanes had the tenacity and the bravery to stand up and fight his own belief, you don’t like him, the incumbent doesn’t like him and even Joker Arroyo called him,”The poster boy of rebellion” but, does not bar him from running.

If you are asking what is a genuine freedom? For now, I don’t ever see the existence genuine freedom of the present administration of Gloria, for she, ruled with omnipotent power over our people, that is she never follow the enacts laws of our legislature, our judicial branches are incompetent, they abide by her wishes, whatever she says, it goes, she rules by decree, she has the power to jail anyone she wants for any reason whatsoever, to torture people, to punish critics, to shut down press and public assembles, even the most consumption necessities of the people she taxed with E-Vat or any Vat. Now, could our people in our society be free? That’s the curtailment of genuine freedom, if you want to know. And, if the Pilipino people feel that she has abused her power, they are free to oust her from office this coming May election by voting majority numbers of opposition.—That’s the genuine freedom–Freedom to choose and freedom to voice one’s opinion.—–

  22. Soleil:

I don’t remember Elorde, who won several boxing bouts too before he retired and did better things for his fellow boxers unlike Pacman who is getting notoriety as a gambler like his bosses, the Pidals, being paraded around town every time he would win a title match. Katarantaduhan na iyan.

Dito sa Japan, it is a tradition to have a motorcade around the Sumo Stadium only when the Sumo match is over and a champion emerges. Iyong mga boxers naman na hapon, siguro bibigyan lang ng medalya but people here would not stop their work just to give honor to these boxers no matter how good they are kasi kahit naman wala sila sikat na ang Japan. Yuck!

I have faith in the people of Cotabato. Kapag nanalo si Pacman diyan, dapat mag-aklas sila ala-EDSA!

  23. chi chi

There is no “genuine freedom” because freedom itself is relative.

  24. Chi,

Genuine freedom comes with rights, duties and responsibilities! Naintindihan ko iyan na mas malinaw when I started practicing and enjoying my right to vote in Japan. It is not a privilege but a right that as much as possible I try not to waste.

Dito boycotting an election is good when the candidates cannot present good platforms lalo na kung nakakaramdam ng hirap ang mga tao.

Lungkot talaga because all the candidates running against each others belong to the Tianak! The only spark of good news is that many of these local candidates support the GO senatoriables.

  39. Bob:

Susmaryopes! Ang gunggong naman!

  40. Come to think of it, with the police now under the military, it is more like the Gestapo or Kempeitai in Germany and Japan before and during WWII.

Restrictions to Trillanes’ media access decried

    04/19/2007

While lauding the decision of the Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) to grant the request of Magdalo leader and Genuine Opposition (GO) senatorial bet Navy Lt/SG Antonio Trillanes IV to be allowed to speak to members of the media in relation to his candidacy, the GO expressed disappointment over the imposition of restrictions.
    …..
“The damage has been done already to his candidacy. We have to work overtime to get his message out and his message is very simple, its anti-corruption and military reform. We are still happy that justice has been served and his constitutional right has been granted,” he said.

    http://www.tribune.net.ph/nation/20070419nat4.html

  42. Under the leadership of a criminal, Filipinos should know by now that she has no consistency, she being a pathological liar, and what she says today is different from what she said yesterday and what she will say tomorrow. The woman is liar period. So, if they say that she has permitted Trillanes to be interviewed via her spokesperson in the Comelec, court, etc., Filipinos should better take it with a grain of a salt so they won’t get shocked and suffer a trauma if she starts changing her mind. Point is why do Filipinos still allow this creep to stay?

Nothing new. This is already a well-known fact. I actually wrote about the projects being peddled by the Fatso, who is said to be bedridden, for a big fee for him and the person who buys such deal.

The Fatso on the other hand may either be feigning sickness or it must be for real.

There is reason to suspect for the Fatso to feign sickness. They have done it before, and the hospital has proved to be a convenient and safest place to cook up something because the doctors there can say “No!” strongly to the media especially when they claim that the Fatso or the Unano is seriously ill.

Kung totoo namang may sakit talaga, good! Matuluyan na sana, especially kung nagkukunyari lang! For us, who pray for such, I guess, the spiritual accountability is lessen!!!

Dapat si Trillanes and those who sacrificed themselves and their careers for a good cause ang i-declare na bayani! Pwehhh!!! Cotabato! Ang ring ay iba sa Kongreso! Pero, mas concern ako kay Trillanes! General Eduardo Ermita is encouraging fraud LGU projects. One of the biggest sources of corruption in the country is government projects. It starts from fraudulent public biddings to ghost deliveries. It’s an indirect bribery and repeat of P728 M fertilizer scam. The Arroyo government cannot explain how the P420 M Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) funds for the 42,000 barangays nationwide vanished without a trace. Each barangay should be given P10,000.00 to fight SARS disease. It’s a part of P1.5 billion SARS fund released before May 2004 elections. The main issue in May 2007 elections is the corrupt Arroyo regime.

Just finished watching the one-on-one interview of Korina Sanchez with Sonny Trillanes.

His answers to the questions (maybe even though thoroughly screened by his captors) were straight to the point – he did not mince words exposing the plan and intention of the administration to cheat in this coming May 14th elections.

    I wish him good luck.

  61. parasabayan parasabayan

Trillanes predicts cheting in the elections. This is also everyone’s prediction. But tiyanak and her two hemorrhoids may not be able to pull the same thing they did in the 2004 elections. Now, more citizens are aware of their dirty tricks, the youth are getting more involved in the elections, the Fatso is incapacitated (he is the known #1 election rigger) and the international community will be fielding in watchers all over. Let us see if the tiyanak can buy a lot of votes this time.

I watched the so-called pyramid vote buying which is a new tactic. There are recruiters for voters. The voters are pre-paid to vote for selected candidates. The trick is, these paid voters were seen signing some papers. Who knows if these were the prepared ballots. Remember the over printed ballots? When will our citizens ever learn? How can we change our culture of corruption when citizens are selling their votes? How pathetic! I just pray that these are just isolated cases and that the bottom line is-the majority of the voters will follow their gut in voting this time.

As a navy officer Trillanes rose to the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade (the equivalent of Captain in the army). He fought the Abu Sayyaf in Mindanao and commanded a team that rescued the survivors of M/S Princess of the Orient.
