What will it be for Erap?

During the tiresome six-hour oral summation by both the prosecution and defense panels in the historic plunder trial of former President Estrada, the one who elicited a most telling reaction was Prosecutor Raymundo Julio Olaguer.

Olaguer opened his summation in the perjury case against Estrada with the famous quote, “Honesty is the best policy.” There was a hushed reaction from the audience. I saw raised eyebrows.

He went on to narrate once again the difference between the 1998 Statement of Assets and Liabilities of Estrada and the bank accounts that held hundreds of millions discovered by the prosecution.

As he went along with his summation, he made a strange defensive reference to the corruption-riddled Diosdado Macapagal Avenue to demonstrate that they are allowed by the Arroyo administration to investigate the case without pressure. That drew jeers from the audience.

Then he ended his summation with another famous quote, “It’s a sin to tell a lie.” That’s when the audience booed. Someone in the courtroom remarked, “Tell that to Gloria Arroyo.”

Some of those in the audience who booed Olaguer were at the Senate gallery during the aborted impeachment trial when then Rep. Joker Arroyo, who headed the prosecution team, thundered, “We can’t have a country run by a thief like him!” They had cheered Arroyo then.

Arroyo became a senator. In the recent senatorial elections, he survived a near sweep by the opposition who rode to victory on widespread anti-Gloria Arroyo sentiments. Those who cheered JokerArroyo then said this time they didn’t vote for him.

So much had happened the past seven years.

Then Sen. Teofisto Guingona, whose “I Accuse” speech sparked the investigation of the Blue Ribbon committee on former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson’s allegations of jueteng payola and misuse of the tobacco fund.

The Blue Ribbon committee hearings segued to the impeachment trial and eventually Edsa 2. Guingona, who was chosen vice president, has long been discarded by Gloria Arroyo. He is now in good terms with Estrada.

Singson, hailed as a hero after Edsa 2, is now back to his shady reputation. Confirming the people’s distrust of him is his resounding defeat in the May 14 senatorial elections. Despite his public vote buying, he was a tail ender among defeated candidates of Arroyo’s Team Unity.

Many things also remained the same. Jueteng, the root of Estrada’s downfall, continues to thrive. Rodolfo “Bong Pineda” who was named by then Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson as the source of the jueteng payola he was allegedly delivering to Estrada, continues to fatten the bank accounts of those in power.

In the fraudulent 2004 presidential elections, Pineda’s wife, Lilia “Baby”, was exposed as the one paying off teachers who were used to cheat for Arroyo.

Graft and corruption flourished. Lying, cheating and thievery became the official policy. This enabled Arroyo to become the longest serving president without having been legally elected into office.

The verdict on Estrada is expected September. He is confident he will be acquitted.

While an acquittal would salve the pain and anger over the unjust ouster of Estrada from the presidency, what would that make of Gloria Arroyo’s six-year presidency? If Estrada did not commit plunder, what then was the rationale for his ouster in 2001?

An acquittal verdict would nullify the basis of the first three years of Arroyo’s presidency, which put her in a position to bastardize the 2004 elections to remain in power.

It’s a political trial. Evidence is incidental. The political environment would be a major factor in the verdict of the court.

I agree that Erap’s tiral is indeed, “a political trial” no less.

What is interesting is if Erap is acquitted or is rendered a not guilty verdict, then this “..would nullify the basis of the first three years of Arroyo’s presidency..”

If a guilty verdict is rendered on the former president, this may spark civilian unrest w/c could lead to Gloria’s demiss as president-kuno.

Whatever the verdict is on Erap, Gloria is in a Catch 22. She placed herself in this bind. There’s no one to blame, except maybe for Mike Arroyo.

Whatever the verdict of the court on President Estrada’s is not an issue, at least he went through the process and submitted himself to the rule of law.

But it was his case of being unseated as the President that is needed to be resolved. Was it constitutional? Or his right to due process was violated? There was no Military Takeover; the process of removing him as defined by the constitution was not allowed to proceed. And the resignation as purported by the opposition was under the cloud of doubt and protestation and was not proven to have been tendered under duress or tendered at all. The case of President Estrada doesn’t end with his conviction or acquittal. In fact it hasn’t even started yet.

Somebody asked “How can you solve a problem like Erap?”

The answer…”Erap is not the problem, Gloria Arroyo is!!! Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (as in Queen of Thieves/Liars/Cheats) is the BIGGEST MISTAKE in Philippine politics!!!

  4. Tongue, please check your email.

    From herman Tiu Laurel’s column:

“… we have a fake president, meaning, she MUST NOT be impeached, but simply ARRESTED;”
    ——————–

That is right! ARREST GLORIA for posing as Philippine president. ARREST Gloria her numerous crimes!!!

ARREST GLORIA for her numerous crimes!!! REMOVE the ILLEGAL residents in Malacañang!

“Honesty is the best policy”? hindi ko nakikita sa administration- from the start to now– mas ang cheating, lying, stealing etc. ngayon. Maynabasa akong opinion that said “that Erap’s case is a lose-lose situation for GMA- kung acquital- talo siya. Kung guilty hindi lang sampal ng karamihan ang aabutin niya- baka bitayin at pugotan ba siya. Kung sabagay, hindi kailangan ang mahabang lubid- seguro sinulid puede na pinong pino at matalim. Ang tungaw tinitiris lang… Coming soon- Saddam in the Phil? Ating abangan.

  8. rose rose

Picture this.. Sa harap ng salamin si GMA- “mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all? All of a sudden nahulog ang salamin- and a loud voice was heard- how can you be fair- ang daming namatay sa cheating noong election, ang daming kasinungalingan etc. etc.- is that being fair? Napakabigat ang mga ginawa mo napatid tuloy ang lubid.

Kaya siguro inabolish ni tiyanak yung death penalty dahil alam niyang malamang gagamitin ito sa kanya balang araw. So, life in prison na lang tutal di ba she is suppose to be sick.

Rose, I absolutely agree with you! It is a lose-lose situation for the tiyanak whatever verdict comes out of Erap’s case. The bottom line is, she grabbed power from a legitimate president and then cheated her way to prolong her illegitimate rule. She will pay big for it one way or the other.

Another big factor too is that, now everyone knows who the more evil one is between the two- TIYANAK VS ERAP. Erap is more appreciated now by the same people who engineered his ouster. They thought they installed a more able president but time has proven them wrong. They just enabled the most corrupt, cheating, lying and murdering president whose biggest asset is to create illusions that the country in on the way to an Enchanted Kingdom. One of her best skills too is to bribe all her lapdogs with the money of the people so she can sit comfortably in her throne while her pitbulls do all the dirty work for her.

With an opposition dominated senate and a Supreme Court that seems to have a conviction of its own, I doubt if the tiyanak will be shielded from all the crimes she has so far committed against the Constitution and our country. Erap’s verdict will be the catalyst to her more immediate ouster in the same way that the victory of Trillianes has become the booster for the AFP to to the right thing by the people. It seems like all the right ingredients are coming together to bring a delicious recipe for the tiyanak’s end! I can’t wait for the finished product! YUMMY!

  10. Sinabi mo pa, Luzviminda, Erap is not the problem, Gloria is. What happened to Erap in fact was a good lesson to learn. He was surrounded by vultures who were eating him alive. They were people who were abusing him and his position as a matter of fact.

It was the same case with Marcos, who is in fact a relative of my mother, and I am not ashamed of that knowing how he tried his best to be a good president. It is just that probably when you are surrounded by the kind of vultures there were in that country of our birth where people, rich or poor, say the same thing—para mabuhay—even when they know they are violating both God’s Commandments and the laws of men that are supposed to be inspired of men, or when these idiots think that it is OK to do wrong as long as you think you are doing good instead of sticking to the principle obedience to the rule as when God says, “Thous shalt not steal” or “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” which are two things a lot many Filipinos easily violate!

And who can we blame for this lack of moral values, etc.? You bet, the religious who are more concerned about politics and mundane things than in toeing the line based on their religious beliefs, duties and responsibilities.

I know for a fact for example that Erap had his own set of priests and nuns surrounding him, but I doubt if they were giving him proper advice and counsel regarding those donations to his charities being given more as a bribe for special favors as in the case of Chavit Singson, but as I have said, between Erap and Gloria, I will side with Erap for at least he had been honest about admitting getting some funds from Singson that he put in the foundation that he had for Moslem students.

I know for a foundation that the brother of a nun I am friendly with managed and administered and was getting support from these donations to Erap’s numerous foundations that the Unano and her accomplices now even ironically accounted for as Erap’s assets, and the Unano sets her heart out to covet and possess.

  11. You bet, Luzviminda, ours is the only religious group, the Unano cannot approach and use for her evil schemes because we are VERY SELF-SUFFICIENT! Our church is not a beneficiary of any gambling institutions. In fact, we are counseled not to buy sweepstakes, and engage in all kinds of gamblings, even those bingo sessions for charity, for there is nothing honest about gambling! It is why, in fact, I don’t do any, not even to while away the time when I go to Reno or Las Vegas for example with my folks by spending even a dollar in the slot machines there.

Tignan mo naman sa Pilipinas. A lot many people there are living and thriving on jueteng, and this is a sad fact!

  13. I pray, PSB, that the new senators will make sure that life sentences there are not commuted they way the idiot now even commutes sentences of hardened criminals like Jaloslos.

Over in Japan, life sentences can be commuted after 15 years of good work in a Japanese prison. Still, I have my own reservations about this procedure. I have seen in fact people trying hard to be good to get their sentences commuted as in the case of Filipino who was given life for stealing and murdering a Japanese for 10,000 yen (less than a hundred dollars as a matter of fact). Just when his case was about to be reviewed for commutation of his case, he committed a dreadful mistake. Nanghinayang ang maraming tao, but I thought, apparently, he had never learned his lesson!

In the case of the Pidals, they actually deserve a punishment similar to the one given a European president and his wife in the late 80’s. They were shot to death as a matter of fact.

This guy in fact finished high school at Ateneo de Manila, and was expected to go through college, but he got involved with the movies. His English in fact is flawless, and he definitely has better diction than the criminal now occupying the palace by the murky river.

What will it be for Erap is he will walk out as a free man in the plunder and perjury charges lodged against him. I believe the argument of Cong. Elect Rufus Rodriqguez, when he said that the state lawyers failed to prove Erap’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. On the allegations that the former president received jueteng pay-offs and benefited from the tobacco excise tax, it was revealed that the prosecution offered no proof other than that Singson is the one who should be jailed.

It will be a double whammy for Chavit Singson once Erap is found not guilty as charge. He lost in the senatorial elections and he lost badly landing 24th place and a possible counter charge of plunder which will be his winning ticket to a place called jail.

  16. Luzviminda:

Tama si Ka Mentong. The unano should be arrested. In principle, in fact, she does not have immunity because she was not duly elected by the Filipinos as she cheated in the last election and before that transgress the Constitution of the land together with these people she has promoted to the high positions in the AFP. They actually should all be arrested, including these conniving crooks who now have the nerves to tell Filipinos they will be killed if they so as try to criticize the criminal and her cohorts.

The Election Code of the Philippines in fact state that anyone who breaks or violates it can be duly arrested and prosecuted. No ifs nor buts!

Her case is different from the case of the Magdalo, however. Theirs was justified as we now know and realize!

For sure, walang nakurakot si Erap.

I saw one video clip with the Fat Guy being shaded with an umbrella pa habang naglalakad sa isang squatter na malapit sa Malacanang, golly, nag-i-style Imelda.

Results of the recent elections do not vindicate Erap- they indict Arroyo.

Ano sa Ingles ang CAVAL-IN-TUNAAN? Siguro: AY, RONNIE! (Puno?)

    Ystakei,

  26. Ellen,

Someone said Erap’s trial is a political trial, might add that in reality the folks who are on trial here are not Erap and his son but Gloria and Jose Pidal and rightly so.

To my mind, a guilty verdict on Estrada for plunder which calls for life in prison might turn this nation upside down. For those justices in whose hands hangs Estrada’s freedom, it’s a damn if you do and damn if you don’t. Our justice system has after all not been known to be all that just; moreover, no less than Davide himself has been accused of breaching the Constitution, thrashing the rule of law to bring a duly elected un-resigned president of the Philippines down and to propel Gloria to power. Where was justice there?

Injustice must be corrected first before justice can be served. I see no other way out.

    Ellen

This yaking (that’s Trillanes word) is ludicrous, preposterous, even ridiculous to bloggers who don’t dream the dream of the just (wannabe). And there seems to be none.

My sincerest congratulations, perhaps even empathize to get that feeling of being happy with yourself, for being who you are and
how the cosmos made you not into a gorgeous movie star but a humble ordinary beauty of the pen’s firmament, a star with many in orbit, moons of your own. Of course I join the now multitudes of admirers for your successful effort, verily your leadership in proving the Filipinos’ worth as a people with dignity and courage to stand up and fight a tyranny seemingly buttressed by evil.

I will not be surprised if in the future, there will be an Ellenton (in the likes of Galveston, Charleston, Frederickton) in Panay island. Ellensboro sounds so British. I will prefer (having served for a short time gave me that privilege) an Ellenton than Javierton. You know what I mean. Let Ellenville be historical as a journo-political activist website while Ellenton your renamed historic province. Be a humble maiden and Say No and loss your power to influence, to inspire, to set the example, to be the symbol of a phoenix of ashes named Philippines.

At a minima, if they have an Alicia in Isabela, there could be an Ellen in Antique. Metaphoric, or literal or figurative, the idea is morbid only to the squeamish.

  31. Luz,

You’re right, Erap is a college dropout. The father was a civil engineer, and the mother is a member of the prominent Marcelo clan. Pretty well off, and as a graduate of an exclusive school, he surely is no dummy when it comes to English, and so was his friend, FPJ, was a graduate of San Beda High School, and whose father was a UP Engineering graduate.

Iyong hindi siya marunong mag-ingles was kind of a joke that he rode on. He speaks better English than the Unano as a matter of fact. Maganda ang diction niya sa totoo lang. Hindi nakakainis pakinggan. Si Unano nababakyaan ako sa mga pinagsasabi.

Sang-ayon po ako rito. Education does not necessarily transate to wisdom. Maturity does not always come with age. A good command of the English language is not a requirement to earn the respect of Filipino hearts.

Both Erap and FPJ won the hearts of the Filipino masses not just because of their big-time being celluloid celebrities. Both of them mastered the psyche of the common tao- and they both came from families that are far from being considered “masa”.

Aling Gloria’s father came from very humble beginnings, and she is having a very difficult time connecting with the common tao. Her attempts at projecting a Nora Aunot type of image cannot even be sustained beyond the 1998 campaign period.

Aling Gloria is well-educated. Aling Gloria is old enough. Aling Gloria has a very good command of the English language.

    Now, try connecting the dots.

    Off Topic:
What’s Gloria’s purpose for the commutation of Jalosjos’ sentence?

Although I do not believe Jalosjos should be the one put to jail, instead, the girl’s tatay-tatayan should have been meted stiffer punishment for adopting a girl and enslaving her for financial considerations. I think it’s a worse crime than soliciting sex with a child prostitute.

I’ve personally seen both girl and the gay pimp, when they both lived (and discreetly practiced their professions) within spitting distance from my house. The girl studied in a Catholic girls’ school on the same street ‘cuz uniforms cost extra to “clients” of the trade. That’s aside from the fat charge for being barely into her teens!

Jalosjos’ conviction was expedited by media while the pimp was almost totally ignored. He still walks the streets.

I disagree with the commutation, let him shoulder the cost of renovation of Camp Sampaguita in NBP first, as he is doing now, before letting him go.

He used his money and power to feed his lust, let him use his money and power to buy him freedom.

Kahit na drop out si FPJ sa San Beda, mas matino pa siya kay Rene Sarmiento, who graduated with high honors sa San Beda.

This is will be the scenario after the conviction or dismissal of the plunder case. Mayor Lim will give back the lost right of the people to rally wherever they want and even at the gates of Malacanan. He will clean up the place of tetanus ridden barb wires and congestive 40 footer vans. MMDA clear the sidewalks, the mayor cleans his streets. And he issues tickets to any illegally parked military vehicles, tanks and firetrucks. No need to rally on weekdays. Weekends will do.

Sinabi mo pa. I saw the bungalow this horny guy built for his visitors inside Muntinlupa. I have a feeling the Chieftain of Muntinlupa wants to occupy it now that is why Jalosjos is being freed. Aircon and with all the amenities, Wow!

On the other hand, he should be made to suffer for what he did. Over in the Land of the Rising Sun now, even procurer of sex are now punished especially if the prostitute is a minor. It is still considered statutory rape even if the prostitute is willing but below 20, the age of maturity in Japan. The prostitute is also charged with prostitution. Over here, it is also a cause for revocation of visas if the prostitute is a foreigner.

Lately, I’ve handled a lot of cases of children of Filipino women engaging in prostitution and a number of them have been deported to the Philippines even if the mother still carries her own permit to stay.

Kaya for me, dapat lang mabulok si Jalosjos sa kulungan. Point is how much did he pay the Pidals to get his freedom? Alam mo ba Tongue T?

Kung ako si Erap ! Tatakbo ako sa 2010, !

  49. Bob:

Sa palagay ko rin, JPE was expecting Parliamentary as early as 1992-1995.

What would be the role of Erap in the near future?Similar to Dadong Macapagal of the 80’s and the 90’s?
    Symbolic stature?Mag-pose o mag-display?
Its not enough for him being in Tanay posing with or clutching a bible.

What’s the difference between Premier Li Peng and Zhao Ziyang?

An Estrada acquittal would prove what many people have been thinking all these years…that EDSA II is nothing but a elitist uprising to remove their “undesired” president…

    Come to think of it..

    EDSA I– The First EDSA
    EDSA II– The Fake EDSA
    EDSA III The Failed EDSA

Are you ready for the Fourth EDSA?
