Velarde, Vidal know about guilty verdict in Estrada trial

El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde and Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal have been informed that the Sandiganbayan has found former president Joseph Estrada guilty of the crime of plunder, DZMM reported Thursday.

In a report by DZMM correspondent Anthony Taberna, no less than President Arroyo talked to Velarde and Vidal about the anti-graft court’s verdict on Estrada’s plunder case.

According to DZMM sources, Mrs. Arroyo talked to Velarde before the May 14 elections and told him that she wanted the Estrada trial to end in a conviction.

The report added that Mrs. Arroyo talked to Vidal over the weekend and confirmed that the Sandiganbayan will release its decision on the plunder trial anytime soon.

A DZMM source said Vidal visited the former president last Monday at his Tanay, Rizal resthouse — where he is under house arrest – to discuss the verdict.

Both religious leaders were allegedly disturbed that Mrs. Arroyo already knew the outcome of the trial when the closing arguments took place only recently.

The DZMM report came a day after full-page advertisements appeared on major dailies, urging Filipinos to accept whatever verdict is handed down by the Sandiganbayan on the Estrada trial.

Opposition leaders, including the former president, accused Malacañang of conditioning the minds of the public to accept a guilty verdict in the trial.

The opposition on Thursday held a press conference at Manila Hotel to denounce the ads and the upcoming verdict.

Ferdie Ramos, one of Estrada’s spokesmen, said two people visited the former president to warn him about the guilty verdict. Ramos declined to identify the two but warned that Estrada’s camp will identify them if Malacanang denied the information.

Former vice-president Teofisto Guingona, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and Sen. Francis Escudero were present during the press conference.

Estrada was ousted from office after a four-day bloodless revolt in January 2001. He was arrested three months later and charged with plunder after allegedly pocketing millions of pesos in tobacco excise tax and numbers racket kickbacks during his term as president.

  1. Everyone and everything in Gloria’s government is for sale in the Philippines… Even in both Houses, it seems the old and the incoming members of the so-called opposition are for sale (I know that Congressman Sulpico is for sale as well as one of his best friends, J Paras has always been for sale.)

However, up until this time, I’ve not wavered in my support for Ping Lacson whom I believe is not yet for sale and hope won’t ever be for sale…

  2. Ellen,

Tito Guingona was one of the most expensive politicians for sale from the time he was FVR’s executive secretary… Ask him how much the Australian defence contractors offered to pay him prior to the 1998 elections in order to turn down an already approved European defence project?

Ask current Tony Carpio, how much he wanted to give his OK when he was legal adviser to FVR to approve a deal!

  3. How can the idiot divulge this kind of information to the heads of these churches, Ellen? This is infringement of the judiciary by the Executive branch and act such as this should merit condemnation especially when everybody knows that this is in fact a case of conflict of interest as far as te pygmy is concerned. Is there no bar association in the Philippines that can go against this, and declare this act by the criminal calling herself president as illegal and dismiss this case.

I don’t see any plunder in the case of Singson in fact against Erap. For me, it is more a case of bribery for which Singson should also be charged to be fair.

This is really unacceptable and nauseating. Kakahiya! Ang kapal! Buti si Erap may pananampalataya pa sa simbahan niya! Ako iyan, I will start looking for the true Church of Jesus Christ, not one with leaders who connive with a devil advocate. Yuck!

  4. Am talking about Carpio who now enjoys his current status as SC justice!

  5. Escudero there? My condolence to Erap. After the betrayal of Escudero of the voters who voted for him, manigas siya. Erap should not trust this guy. Nor should the Filipinos ever again!!! Wala rin palang yagbols! Paporma lang!!!

  6. Yuko,

These men are not members of the Roman Catholic Church. They are members of their own, perverted Philippine Catholic Church! For instance, there is an absolute difference between Cardinal Lustiger of Paris and Cardinal Rosales of the Philippines and that difference is that Lustiger is a man of the Church while Rosales is a man of Malacanang. For instance, the formidable and holy Abbey Pierre who recently died would put to shame many members of the Philippine clergy put together!

In other words, I am a Catholic and will remain a Catholic even if I despise some members of the Catholic clergy because my conviction is that those members of the clergy who give the Catholic Church a bad name do not,by themselves, make up the Catholic church.

  7. Yuko,

An anecdote: In the 90s, a friend of mine brought me to Cardinal Sin (actually this friend was one of our in country managers then). I was curious to meet the cardinal and was in a group who wanted an audience with the cardinal.

Everyone of them ‘genuflected’ and kissed the ring of the cardinal. I refused – I merely shook his hand and said I am very please to meet you! My friends were “shocked” but tell you what even the perplexed Cardinal who asked me if I was a Catholic and I said I was a ROMAN CATHOLIC put in more speaking time with me than with the rest of the group; we all ended up talking about antique objects and furniture – hahahahah!

  8. Ellen,

Just read this in the Business Mirror courtesy of Quezon:

““The approval of President Arroyo of the decision rendered by the general court martial manifests that justice has been served and that the military justice system is fair and reasonable as it is harsh,” said the military spokesman, Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro.

“Military adventurism has no place in a democratic society, it will not be tolerated and disciplinary action will, in all cases, be clear, swift and decisive,” he added.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Democratic society? Reasonable? Swift and decisive? The AFP?What thorough bullshit!

  9. Dito iyan, Ellen, when Abe for instance does the same thing, the case will surely be dismissed. No sane and logical judge of the Japanese court will allow himself to be subject to the PM when it comes to judging a case that is not under the jurisdiction of the executive. Tapos sasabihin, democracy daw? What a crap!

The case of Erap should now be dismissed!!! If they want, they should charge him with bribery together with Chavit Singson—no deal, no plea bargaining.

Why do they allow a criminal to go on running the country like hell?

  10. Thanks, Ana, for that story on your encounter with the Cardinal Sin as in sinful. Hahahahahaha! Buti hindi ka hiningan ng abuloy!

  11. Ana, what say you about the patronage given to the pygmy by the Catholic Church in Rome? Kaya lumaki ang ulo because of such patronage sa totoo lang. Golly, ilan beses nang pumupunta sa Rome charged to the Philippine government. For me, I don’t see what benefit such visit has on the Philippines except make the pygmy look and pretend to be holy! Kaya bakit iyan hindi i-charge sa kaniya since it is mere private visit!

  12. Tell you what, Anna, I was baptized a Catholic when I was an infant, but I’m glad I looked for another church and the truth when I was a teen-ager.

I never regretted that decision. I’m very happy and contented with my religion at present, where I have come closer to God the Father, learned, loved and appreciated more the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and tried hard to do as prompted by the Holy Ghost. There is a big difference in fact than relying on those sinful priests and nuns for salvation as a matter of fact. I, alone, in fact am responsible for my own action.

One thing I noticed though when I was in Europe was that the people there were less fanatical about religion than say the Filipinos and the Romans. My half-French foster Mom was Roman Catholic but I never saw her go to church during the time I lived with them. The husband was Anglican.

I’m wondering why Erap supports Villar and not Lacson. Is it because he is guilty of plunder after all?

And that he is looking forward to Villar 2010 Presidency for possible executive clemency just in case one is not forthcoming in this current regime.

  15. Chabeli Chabeli

This I got to see: Gloria denying she ever spoke to Cardinal Vidal & Bro. Mike regarding Erap’s verdict. By denying, will Gloria be calling them liars ?

We are now living in interesting times, indeed !

  16. Valdemar Valdemar

It has been prophesied in the old testament of the administration that erap must be punished. So everything is scripted to the quaresma of Erap’s conviction. Its all written in the dead water scrolls by the Pasig. It is being revealed to the church like the Judas scrolls.

  17. norpil norpil

if the estradas are not gos, who are. maybe they have given up? following the old maxim if you cannot win them, join them? gma seem to have less trouble after the election than before, not unless the people do something.

  18. Chabeli:

Is that so? The Pygmy is now denying that she has talked to these leaders of her church? Wow, ginawa pang sinungaling iyong pare at espiritista! Sa church namin iyan, baka ma-excommunicate siya!

  19. Sampot,

I understand that the fight for the Senate Presidency is between Villar and Senator Pimentel although the latter is more concerned now about his own health. Kung gusto nilang tumakbo siya, OK lang sa kaniya, I guess, but to make something like what Villar did is beyond the dignity of Senator Pimentel.

This, I know for a fact.

  20. “Military adventurism has no place in a democratic society, it will not be tolerated and disciplinary action will, in all cases, be clear, swift and decisive,” he added.

Is military adventurism misplaced in a democratic society only if undertaken by men in uniform? Is Mike Arroyo’s adventurism during the height of EDSA Dos well placed?

Eltikol Bacarro needs to be careful with his pronouncements. Did he not realize that such utterances do cut both ways?

At doon walang araw doon puro gabi.
John 8;44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

  22. I don’t think a guilty verdict is the issue here. By all means, if the courts find him guilty, let them say so. The bigger issue now becomes Aling Gloria’s meddling. She is really pushing the thinking Filipinos’ backs to the wall. She meddled with the elections of 2004 through Garci, her hands are not so inconspicuous during the last elections, and here she is again, meddling with the Sandiganbayan. She should resign from the presidency and get herself appointed as a Sandiganbayan justice if she wants a particular verdict.

Erap, being an issue, had just been eclipsed by a bigger issue- Aling Gloria. As in the case of the recent elections, let us not be fooled into classifying this as an innocent vs guilty issue nor an Erap vs GMA issue. The issue is GMA vs the Filipino people. She swore to abide by the rule of law, and look at how she is trampling the same rule. The oft-repeated cliche that no man is above the law may yet be proved correct… ah, but in the Philippines, there is always a woman above the law. Erap just happened to be a man.

At doon walang araw doon puro gabi.

Labas pa Count Dracula, ha? There was a tour to Transylvania that I wanted to join before pero dahil sa nangyaring guerra sa Romania, hindi natuloy. Part of the tour was a visit to the castle of this Count Dracula na totoong count pala.

If there is any truth to these allegations that the President has any knowledge of the Verdict before it is handed down by the Court itself and worse if she somehow made it known she wanted an Outcome of the Trial Her Way, this is the Mockery of the Justice System, an impropriety that is enough for any Decent Official, much more a President to Vacate her Position. But my bet is she is going to deny, deny, deny again…

Have you guys noticed lately that even “Jinggoy” Estrada is toning down his stance as an opposition? Is there any thing brewing? Maybe a deal that the verdict could be guilty of lesser offense instead, and release for the sentence served equivalent to his Pretrial Detention? I don’t know, but a possibility, because in the Philippines politics, wheeling dealing as we experienced and observed is always on the play…

    Anna,
We are a Roman Catholic Family too, but personally, I don’t practice any religion where my siblings are devout. So everytime my cousin a Roman Catholic Priest visit us here in Toronto or we in Exchange visit him in Iloilo, we just hug like friends and talk about family and chess and sometimes girls, because one of my long ago girlfriends was one his students at some religious school. that how we respect each others.

  29. The mind of a criminal. According to Tribune, the pygmy is offering Senator Trillanes an easy way out of the Senate by apologizing to her. What? Masaya siya. Utak kriminal na walanghiya.

She should tell that to herself. Apologize to the Filipinos and submit herself to prosecution so the proper punishment can be meted on her. Hmmmmmph! Ang sarap magmura but out of respect for Ellen, I am trying my best not to say P—–ina mo, unano!!! Nakakakulo ng dugo!

Hopefully, Senator Trillanes is made up of better moral fiber to succumb to this temptation of the devil in pig’s cloak. Ngayon pang alam niyang puedeng magmirakulo ang Diyos by mobilizing the Filipinos’ to do what they have already actually proved they can do, regardless of whether or not they are duwag!!!

I support Senator Trillanes to stand against the criminal squatting at the palace by the murky river. Do you?

  30. Out of topic for this loop, but I don’t like to go back anymore to the appropriate loop. My apologies to Ellen, but here’s an excerpt from the musings of one of Tribune’s columnists, Ronald Roy on the Pimentel-Abalos feud on unscrupulous Dayana Zubiri:

For his part, Abalos added that he was feeling so sick that evening he decided to go to the ritzy hotel for some hot soup! Ha ha ha (x100), that’s 300 ha’s fyi, Mr. Abalos! At the senator’s end, however, Koko’s dad remains adamant. “Why should I apologize to anybody? It’s Mr. Abalos, not the Zubiris, that I’m addressing”. I agree with Sen. Nene Pimentel. Abalos was not only a Municipal Judge years ago. As Comelec Chairman, he is the ex-officio Chairman of the National Board of Canvassers which will decide the case between Koko and Migz. By THE MERE FACT OF entering the Zubiris’ private room, in full public view, already Abalos was guilty of actionable impropriety. In fine, he was breaching the sensitive norms of delicadeza. The trouble here is: he may not even know the meaning of the words impropriety and delicadeza. Certainly, Ben Abalos cannot pretend to have forgotten the golden rule that, like Caesar’s wife, he should have desisted, to repeat, from being seen so much as approaching the Zubiri FAMILY. He therefore does not deserve to stay a second longer in the Comelec.

    *****
    Amen.

ystakei: Naunahan mo ako pero hindi naman contest ito..as a matter of fact it is an honor to know that we are tuned to the same wave length. I just read Mr. Roy’s column for the first time. I do like the idea of a civil disobedience move. Sa tingin ko kaya si Jinggoy ay nakikisayaw na rin para knowing that the verdict is guilty- baka bibigyan ni Gloria ng clemency wala na sa bilango. But kung ganoon ang mangyari “utang na loob nila Estrada” and it would not only put her being a fake president into the trash bin but permanently deleted.
Acer: Thanks for the Bible Quote…sana basahin ng lahat. Tumpak na tumpak para kay GMA & Co.
Vic: taga Iloilo ka ba? I remember Cardinal Sin- when he was in Jaro. Her youngest sister was my classmate and her other sister was my teacher in Sagrado Corazon..we were internas then. I am a catholic and I find it very pathetic that many priests who are supposed to be representatives of Jesus Christ are the very reason why many catholics leave and more so now. But the priests and leaders are not the church. The church is us who believe…

There’s only one reason why gloria wants a guilty verdict for Erap e.i to legitimize her stolen presidency. She is laying the groundwork for her graceful exit. Once Erap is convicted, she might give a presidential pardon and bammmmmmmmmmm…there goes the weasel. But in my book, she will always remain a cheat, usurper of the Philippine presidency.

I stop believing these filipino catholic priests long time ago. In my place I don’t even want to attend a mass that is officiated by a Filipino priest.

  33. You bet, Rose, we share the same sentiments and feelings for the land of our birth ke ano pang citizenship, nationality or whatever. I posted in the other loop a letter for the Senators from B&W. Pakisulatan ninyo if you feel like it.

As for the pygmy pardoning Erap, I doubt. Gusto lang niyang umamin si Erap kahit hindi totoo with this trick of giving him clemency. Ano gago? Ganyan din ang offer kay Trillanes. Fortunately, our hero is of a different mold. May paninindigan!

Si Gloria ang magpakulong dapat. Mas maganda!

  34. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

It’s not a surprise why Mrs. Gloria Arroyo is interfering with anti-graft court’s business. She prostituted government institutions, the Roman Catholic Church and religious sect through bribery, horse trading and patronage for the sake of political survival. Malacanang mafia’s dirty hands are all over the place. The political trial of the century is a dismal flop.

The anti-graft court, Sandiganbayan Special Division was created exclusively to try and convict ousted President Joseph Estrada. The plunder case is weak for guilty verdict and goes after a lesser crime. The anti-graft court will convict Erap for falsification of Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Networth (SALN) in a face-saving act by the government. Mistrial is another longshot alternative. The principle of equal justice under law is elusive in the Philippines’ justice system.

Gloria Arroyo is one of the most arrogant person in the world, she is more worst compared to Muhammed Ali during his famous time in taunting his boxing opponents. Her attempt to pre-maturely announce the decision of the court is unethical, interfering with judge decision is absolutely out of order, whoever gave her the leakage of Judge decision must need to take a constitutional law, the professor who has a doctorate degree in constitution law 99 not 101 must explained to them the concepts of separation of power between Executive and Judiciary.

It is unethical for her to communicate with a judge who’s promulgating the case without sharing the communication with all parties in the case. Now, whatever the Judge decision it will become whitewash, doubtful and bias because the integrity of the court was unprotected. The House on Ethic Committee must take a serious action and sanction those party who are involved in these unethical practice.

    Vic, Rose, Sampot,

I’ve been trying to crack the Jinggoy Puzzle myself. First, he openly went against Erap and JV and supported Ronnie Zamora’s opponent. Then he hints at supporting Villar but declares he won’t ever be pro-administration.

In JV’s wedding, Erap says JV is his “favorite” son for being loyal and subservient to his father, knowing fully well that JV is not in good terms with his “other” son. Would that mean Jinggoy is now acting on his own?

We also all know, that Ronnie Zamora’s brother, Manny, is one of Lacson’s biggest sponsors, aside from Gokongweis and the Chinese community funding Lacson’s campaigns. Zamora is that close to Lacson. My take is that Jinggoy is sour against Lacson and going against Zamora, then, against Lacson’s group, is his way to settle a score. That could also explain why Erap calls JV his “masunuring anak”. (No, Sampot, Erap has not officially endorsed Villar for the Senate presidency yet.)

    Magulo talaga, ano?

There is a reason.

That I can tolerate pero iyong Jap lalo na tuwing Dec. 7.

No need to sell anything as a matter of fact. Ang daling gumawa ng pera with my kind of qualifications dito sa Japan as a matter of fact. Inggit lang ang ungas, you bet!

Kaya trying hard to cover up her own deficiencies by being really mean and evil.

Ang ibig sabihin dito ng JAP ay Jewish American Princess..mas gusto ko ang Jap as in Japanese. Mas maganda ang ugali ng Japanese women.

Malacanang-sponsored Text Brigade is saturating SMS waves singing hallelujahs of ousted President Joseph Estrada’s conviction for plunder by the Sandiganbayan. Concerted black propaganda is in full blast before Sandigan‘s ruling. The evil woman usurper wants Erap’s conviction by hook or by crook. Legitimacy issue is at stake.

But don’t believe all those propaganda about Japanese women being subservient. Wala na iyan. They are more emancipated now. Wise nga lang when they pretend to be the weaker sex so they can get what they want.

When I complained about being made to walk 12 inches behind a man, sabi ng sister-in-law ko, “Don’t. That’s wisdom in disguise.” Kasi sabi niya, I can always push a man from the back para madapa kung loloko-loko siya!!! Hmmmmm, tama naman siya!

When I am in a circle of Japanese, I am very “mahinhin,” never use vulgarity, and act like what a refined woman is expected to do.

I went to a finishing school as a matter of fact before marrying my husband that included lessons in wearing kimono, flower arrangement but no tea ceremony because of my religion. Instead, I took up calligraphy, abacus and Japanese cooking. It was fun learning to be a real woman as a matter of fact in a society that was indeed very chauvinistic.

So, when the mother-in-law was not looking, I would join those women-lib movements, and reason why I was able to get political connections, and my friends now being in the Diet trying hard to make sure that women are treated right.

Nagiging parang siga-siga lang ako when I am in front of Filipinos. Lalo na dito sa Japan, ang daming magugulong pilipinong ipinadala ang gobyerno ng Pilipinas that frankly speaking will not make Filipinos proud. Natatabunan iyong mga matitino like my friend who is actually a full-blooded Chinese but proud to say he is the only licensed “Filipino architect” in Japan.

Nice to know you, Rose. I enjoy reading your posts. Nakakaalis ng init ng ulo! Keep it up, friend. Someday, I’ll see you in Jersey City. Sa SFO, CA lang ako pag Christmas and holidays.

Now, ipinakita nina Escudero at Cayetano ang tunay nilang kulay. OK. Burado na sila sa akin, at kahit mag-isa ako, I know my opinion counts kaya I will stick to what I think is right and good, not give any attention nor patronize anything the creep at Malacanang spreads around.

Pwe!

Yuko: I liked Japan. I would have stayed there to study but mahirap ang mag aral ng Japanese. I stayed at Sacred Heart in Hiroo for almost 2 months.

  64. Yup, Sacred Heart. Iyan ang Alma Mater ng Empress ng Japan. We live nearby.

  65. Rose: Kaya lang baka may Don’t Pollute the Water and Don’t Throw Garbage signs na.

Sakit ng tiyan ko! Brrrrrrt! Prbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrt! 😛

  66. Rose,

Truth is I cannot be bothered by these Internet Brigaders who are trying hard to alienate me with members of this blog. Kasi I know me! Proud of my roots as a matter of fact. Lolo ko KKK, a bodyguard of Gen. Antonio Luna, his uncle (My mother corrected me on this because I thought Luna was my granpa’s cousin, uncle pala!). He witnessed the assassination of the general by Aguinaldo’s men led by the pygmy’s ancestor who earned the Pampaguenos the unpalatable namecalling “Dugong Aso!”

My mother’s brother gave up his life in WWII. He died in Pampanga, a victim of a traitor there who told the Japanese command there that he was a Philippine soldier on furlough to visit his Pampanguena wife and son.

Even my father, the Japanese mestiso, chose to fight for the Philippines instead of joining the Japanese Imperial Army. He and his brothers served in the USAFFEE as a matter of fact, and as a reward was granted US citizenship at the end of the war. Do I need to say more?

You are right. We may have adopted foreign citizenship, etc., but the fact remains that we were born in the Philippines. It is just right that we try to make it what it should be—a country we can always be proud of!!!

  67. Cocoy:

My mother got her US citizenship after 45 years living in the US. Ayaw nga niya. I just strongly suggested it to her. I think she got convinced when I told her that it would not make her less Filipino if she did since almost everyone in the US, except for the American Indians, was not a native of the USA. I told her that if she would rather die in the USA, she might just as well die as an American.

I helped her review for her oral and written exam for citizenship. I was also there when she took her oath. You know what she said afterward? “Ganoon pala lang iyon. You’re right, I don’t feel less a Filipino as a matter of fact!”
