Tweets are forever

To control the damage wrought by her tactless tweets, Mai Mislang, President Aquino’s trusted speechwriter, has removed her twitter and facebook accounts.

President Aquino took note of that in defending her. He said, “Upon realization, she had tried to correct what she did wrong.”

Unfortunately, in the wild, wild cyberspace, once you post something it stays there forever. IT expert Victoria Gaerlan sent me the tweets that Mislang had taken down.

Meanwhile, someone also directed me to the photos by Bob Guerrero of Mislang performing with her rockband, Blue rats. Guerrero has given me permission to use these photos. He just asked to link the post to bhobg.multiply.com and http://www.flickr.com/photos/bhobg.

Here are the photos. Click to view them enlarged:

Gaerlan said those who think that because they post on twitter, it will stay on just with their followers in twitter are mistaken. She said there is such thing as syndication:”It blasts your tweet to several other sites and it does NOT get deleted even if you delete your original tweet. Why? Because when content is syndicated in another site, it gets stored on that other site’s database.”

Here are some of the tweets that Gaerlan recovered from http://maimislang.tweetboard.com:

By the way, Gaerlan said Mislang’s account is still up: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=803105577.

How careless, Ignorant , stupid she can be.

No wonder Carandang tried to clean up Mislang, sya pinaldan and even responded. In the middle of the wine toasting ritual between the presidents, Mislang and Carandang were tweeting “wine sucks”! Idjiits!!!

  3. chi chi

Carandang and Mislang suck! Even PNoy sucks in defense of his spitwriter and entertainer!

  4. saxnviolins saxnviolins

  5. NFA rice NFA rice

    Mai Mislang: The wine sucks!

Carandang: The red or the white?

Even Carandang himself saw nothing wrong with it. Simply breath-taking.

  6. NFA rice NFA rice

My girlfriend is Vietnamese and she is more beautiful than all Filipinas I have met, and more classy than Mislang.

Next time I hear PNoy’s speech, nakakaduda.

    “It’s a mistake, it’s over-exuberance, I got mad at her, I reprimanded her,” – Ricky Carandang

NAKS! laglagan na! Saying ‘red or white’ is certainly a different style of being ‘mad’ and ‘reprimand.

I now think Ricky Carandang lying is worse than mai’s honest tweet.

Pinasikat nyo pa. Nakilala tuloy. Tactless and careless, I agree. She got burned already. Too candid to a fault. 😛

Ms. Ellen, the FB account looks legit, if I were to base it on the friends listed and the information shared. But I think she’s learned something by now, because the photos were visible yesterday. They’re not anymore when I looked this morning.

  12. OH D~!@#$%^&*(>?!! The more this infuriates me! Ricky Carandang did not even smell the shit of his staff’s tweets?! And Ces Drilon??? No wonder this Communications Department of Noynoy is such a major major disaster!!!

  13. why all this making mountains out of molehills? and obviously making molehills out of mountains? 🙂
it was done more out of fun than of malice guys, its pretty obvious, all of us do that…i think the petrang kabayo gay guy calls it “okra” of something?
this is so petty already…when smelling other people’s supposed shit – make sure its not your own ass thats smelling! sheeesh!

  14. Vietnamese prettier than Filipinas? Pleeaasse….
I wouldn’t even touch their hos even if you paid me! thats why there is the “vietnam rose!” baka hindi alam yan NFA? matuto ka kasing manligaw! wala nang gaganda pa sa Pinay! period! este …

The National Library of Congress began archiving tweets from April this year as tweets provide “valuable insights into WHAT’S HAPPENED and how people have REACTED.”

  16. florry florry

President Aquino took note of that in defending her. He said, “Upon realization, she had tried to correct what she did wrong.”

So Noynoy believes that by removing the twitter and facebook accounts of his speechwriter, all the wrongs have been corrected.

What an !@#$%&?! That will not even come close to the thinking of the stupids or idiots, because even an idiot will not subscribe to that idea.

For the nth time, Noynoy has proven once again how thin, narrow and shallow his way of thinking and understanding things. He is acting like a frustrated father who has to protect and fight tooth and nail for his kids whether they are right or wrong.

By spoiling them, he is giving them more reason to commit more booboos; anyway big daddy is always there.

  18. nwsnhstryC nwsnhstryC

Ricky Carandang said he reprimanded mai mislang. Ano tinweet lang sya? Dapat gawing sahog sap pho hoa si mai mislang at Ricky Carandang dahil parehong walang silbi.

I have to agree with Henry & Jug on this, naguusap lang silang magkakaibigan nothing wrong with that. I’m also sure that she didn’t do (tweet) that to offend anyone especially the Vietnamese. If she commented here sa blog ni Ellen with what she tweeted about Vietnamese wine, and she identified herself, ibang usapan na yan. BUT what Mislang forgot was, hindi lang friends niya ang nakakabasa sa tweet niya. She should should’ve been more careful.

Regarding who’s prettier… it’s in the eyes of the beholder.

  20. I was interviewed by phone Anthony Taberna in this morning’s “Umagang kay Ganda.” This is ABS-CBN’s online report:

For Tordesillas, however, it all redounds to being courteous, no matter what the forum is.

“Kapag bisita ka sa isang bahay, hindi mo nilalait yung host…bastos yung nilalait yung nagpapakain sa iyo,” she said. (If you’re a mere visitor, you do not ridicule the host.)

She noted that Mislang went there as a representative of the country, not a mere visitor.

“Hindi ka ginastusan ng taumbayan para manlait…Naghahanap ka pala ng lalaking pogi, bakit ka pa nagpagastos sa taumbayan, e di nagbakasyon ka na lang sana,” she added. (The people did not spend money for you to ridicule. If you’re looking for good-looking men, you should have gone to Vietnam as a mere visitor.)

    Here’s video:

  21. I’m also sure that she didn’t do (tweet) that to offend anyone especially the Vietnamese.

    — Mike

I should hope not! Her comments may not be the ‘end of the world type thing of comments’ but they were discovered and “disparaging” comments by an official member of the presidential delegation that went public, even through no fault of her own, become almost indefensible.

Let this be a lesson to her, a lesson in humility.

  22. Incidentally, Ellen, I purchased a pair of rubber shoes from a sidewalk vendor during yesterday’s trip (desperately needed change of walking shoes because of miles and miles of sightseeing on foot); vendor was adamant in his sales speech: shoes were not made in China but were made in Vietnam and showed me the label “to prove” his point. 🙂

  23. Anne, Vietnam is doing well economically considering the devastation that it experienced from two colonial powers.

Where are you vacationing, in U.K?

  24. Ellen, was in Greece…

Oh by the way, Ellen, Vietnam suffered in the hands of three superpowers in succession (not to speak of their war with Cambodia): France, America and China. After America’s defeat in Vietnam, Vietnam went again into war — it was brief but nonetheless a “major” war with China involving hundreds of thousands of Chinese troops entering Vietnam.

  25. The Vietnamese are a most valiant people. Their history is replete with incredible courage and determination. Vietnam and her people deserve to be greatly admired.

And as you say, they are beginning to do economically well — Russia has just signed an agreement to build their first nuclear plant.

  26. The quality of the government that he will give us depends on the people that he wants around him.”

    Ellen, spot on!!!

  27. chi chi

“For Tordesillas, however, it all redounds to being courteous, no matter what the forum is.”

Talaga, hindi binabastos ang host! To add, even if some say that Mislang intended the tweet only for Carandang and friends, I’m sure she and Carandang exchanged tweets happened while PNoy and his Vietnamese counterpart were on an actual wine toasting ritual.

  29. chi chi

  34. Tongue, can’t blame the Vietnamese. When things were so rough their way, the only nation that helped them on all fronts, food front included, was Russia, er, the old USSR.

Just hope they’ve since completely overhauled their tchernobyl technology. :-p

  35. chi chi

Hi Anna! Kita-kits na kita here and at FB after you rest. Glad you enjoy Greece even if you frequent the area, hehehe….

  37. Eh mukhang extra-close si Mislang kay Noynoy, may picture sa antipinoy-dot-com.

  38. vic vic

    anne,
actually i see a lot of products imported from Vietnam sold at the Big Box stores like the Home Depot, Walmart and Lowes, but almost none from RP…maybe just next to China and Korea, but not yet in advanced Electronics, but mostly basic consumers goods…that is why I’d say the Vietnamese just too busy with their daily business to even be bothered by some out of line comments from a two-pence official from a country not any better than theirs.

  39. Hi Chi! Yep, enjoyed it lots… no complaints 🙂

  40. that is why I’d say the Vietnamese just too busy with their daily business to even be bothered by some out of line comments from a two-pence official from a country not any better than theirs.

  43. Still from http://www.karencardenas.com/apps/blog/entries/show/5211099-propriety-and-mai-mislang

You hear apologists, “She didn’t mean it. She asked forgiveness. There was no malice. No bad intentions.”

If I went to your house and while at your table I tweeted that your food sucked, would that be “no intent to offend”? If I went to your home and tweeted that all your kids were ugly, would that not be offensive? Insulting my host is ok?

And if my friend replied with, “The meat or the soup?” “The son or the daughter”? is that not adding fuel to the offense?

  44. chi chi

  45. This beautiful story is from Facebook wall of Victoria Gaerlan on what Mislang did to the Vietnamese:

Once upon a time a certain man went to the town monk.

“Monk,” confesses he, “I have been slandering you to my neighbors. I am truly sorry for what I’ve said and how I’ve treated you. I take back all the bad I have said. How may I find penance?”

The monk nods, then sagely proffers this instruction: “Go pluck 3 chickens…. Stuff a bag with the feathers then place one feather on every doorstep where you have slandered me.

Return to me when you complete your task.”

Scurrying away, the villager meticulously complies. He returns to the monk the next day.

“Monk,” smiles he, “I have completed your instruction. What should I do now?” “Now?” “Now,” intones the monk,… “go collect back every feather.”

“But, but,” splutters the villager, “this task is impossible, it has been an entire night the wind has blown the feathers in all directions.”

The monk nods in agreement, turns, and walks away.

I soon realized na bagay nga pala ang aking new wash-and-wear look with my new job. Ngarag again, just like Shang. For those who have been curiously asking why I resigned from DSWD, I took kasi the job at the office of Sen. Noynoy Aquino as what else? Speechwriter. I’m the Senator’s Political Communications Officer so kung ano yung ginagawa ko sa Shang dati, yun din ginagawa ko now (I started last August 1 while still in DSWD…ngarag pramis). Press releases, media relations, speaking engagements, interviews…the works. I head the unit so maganda yung computer ko…haha. Dream job siya actually, kasi I really see myself in Philippine politics as a communicator.

With her instant and popular notoriety I think it is best for her to simply try to fade away — for the benefit of her and our President. The more she tries to repair the damage, the more the muck flies in the direction of Pinoy’s face. Save the Presidency, not yourself.

  57. Bambit Bambit

Command Responsibility. Not synonymous with Ricky Carandang.

For all the intense criticism that Mai Mislang is getting now let’s not forget that her boss Ricky Carandang condoned her tweet by replying to it. The level of immaturity in the Palace is quite alarming. It is not enough to demand the resignation of Mislang, but it is only appropriate that Carandang resign as well.

  58. If this young woman wanted publicity, she’s got it. 😀

  59. kasi I really see myself in Philippine politics as a communicator.

Better luck at communicating, Mademoiselle… 😛

  60. Chi,

Pres Aquino probably is wondering what Ms Mislang thinks of him after all her pogi tweets or pogi blog posts 😀

  61. Vietnam is doing extremely well, one thing I noticed is their ability to unify and move in the direction set by their leaders, they seem to be too busy to bother with petty politics, and they are open to good ideas. Now Filipinos are a difficult lot, we complain everytime and are stubborn…we copied so much from the americans, and most of them not good habits…
There must be more important and deeper issues than a woman who innocently tweeted her friends but ended up being catnip for a few but noisy felines intent on making the issue a nationwide bedlam…too bad most Filipinos are more circumspect and are just too busy taking advantage of the opportunities…then again some have all the time…

  62. listening Umagang Kay Ganda: magaling sumulat si mai? “ay i cannot say that! wala pa akong nababasa!” bwahahahaha I LOVE IT! hahaha!

tita ellen, i must say, this is the 1st time i heard your voice, and i swear i was laughing at your good manners and right conduct comment, at yong pwes pumunta sya doon (na hindi pamasahe nang bayan) at maghanap nang lalaki hahahaha!!

And of course, you my dear suave fellow, have no time at all to catnip ’em felines…

Having been an expat in Vietnam for 4 years, I really feel that the tweets of Mai Mislang are very insensitive and improper for a supposed to be educated lady and part of the official Philippine delegation. More so of the comment made by Ricky Carandang who was her boss. His reasoning that Mai Mislang is hard working staff of P-Noy even before at the Senate does not justify what she has said which somehow ridiculed part of the Vietnamese culture and people. Ricky Carandang should have stopped Mai when she made that tweet about the wine. His answering back and making a tweet of his own showed that they are of the same mind and character. Really very sad, what are friends for again!!!

  71. The Mai Mislang whinery

    By Boo Chanco

The thing that worries me more about the Mislang mistake is how it has become one more proof that this country or this administration is becoming insensitive. Ricky Carandang called the Mislang caper a small thing, making me wonder about Ricky’s maturity for his job. Ricky was reported to have playfully twitted Mislang back, red or white, reference to the wine. And Ricky must be told the Vietnamese government didn’t bring it up because they are polite… it doesn’t mean they are not unhappy about it…

Oh well… we have become insensitive anyway so maybe I can relate a comment I read in one of the Facebook tracks that observed Mislang didn’t have the right to make that comment about Vietnamese men because she wasn’t a looker herself (I am saying this in kinder words). Indeed, the person said, Mislang looked like a younger version of the Ombudsman.

That’s neither here nor there inasmuch as beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder. Who is to say who is beautiful and who is not? But I relate it here as a necessary reminder for the likes of Ms Mislang among the juveniles surrounding P-Noy to behave because for one thing, they aren’t as great as they think. They just happen to work at the Palace.

no wonder. napaka-literal mo. kaya pala ‘irony’ di mo gets.

  87. chi chi

Saw that already, first day pa lang, jug. As to Mislang… bahala syang dumakip ng pogi, at 29 I can’t figure out why pogis seem to be hiding from her. hehehe!

  88. honestly, after all this, if i happen to meet her personally one day, i’d tell her “don’t tweet this!” if she says something like the vietnamese guys thing i’d be furious, if on the other hand she says the opposite, i can’t handle the deluge of disappointed women… 🙂

  89. benjpedro,
just toying with you thats all…relax lang…life is complicated enough as it is…that was meant to be ‘farcical’ to add to your ‘irony’ is that a baby iron man by the way? 🙂

  90. tru blue tru blue

    @ 81 and 82:

Sorry walang pogi dito – mislang

e maganda meron ba? – ces

TT: I took Ces’ outright response as a letdown; you looked at it differently…que sera sera na lang.

OT: As I’ve predicted, my man Harry put away anothe Hag. Thanks to Mani P for his endorsement of the good hearted man.
Pareng Coy: Prop 19 didn’t make again, while cigarettes and
tobaccos as well as Johnny Walkers are languishing on liquor stores.

  91. nah, there are worst things one could do…but she needs to be punished nevertheless, i would prefer putting her across my lap and spanking her but TT would look at that differently? 🙂

  92. at 29 I can’t figure out why pogis seem to be hiding from her. hehehe!

    ——————-

oops, she’s disqualified already for me. if i’m going to look at another woman (with impure intentions) it should only be along the 18 – 25 bracket…

  93. jug, you can meet her in person (Tip: I prefer you don’t), if you like. All yours, maganda naman, sabi mo. ahihihi.

Tutal may kasabihan din na “Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder”. I think she still gigs in Malate. Last time I saw her, it was in Hobbits’ house. (or Republic of Malate ba yun?) Wag nyo lang kakantiin si Ces D. – my college crush.

And yes I do look at spanking differently.[wink]

  94. Sabi niya rin sa Multiply niya, (check out baycas’ link) “walang pogi dito” (refering to UP.

Nagpapasikat ba tawag dun? At marami sa atin ganyan!

Kaylan kaya kuha yang tomaan with Noynoy?! Shiiiiiit!!!

  100. chi chi

  101. chi chi

#109 Lacierda, that is the stupidest alibi on earth! If she was not aware that she’s a government official, asec pa, she has no business staying in Malacanang. 🙂

  102. chi chi

Wow, sobrang comfy ni Mislang kay Nwoy! 🙂

  104. chi chi

Tongue, mas grabe poste o kesa sa akin…hahaha! In short, nakakaalibadbad. 🙂

  105. chi chi

While Puno is the gun buddy, Mislang is the tomaan buddy pala. Ang lalim ng kanilang pinagsasamahan!

Looks like our government is being run like a Barkada System! How can Pnoy established credibility with all these issues coming out into open? We voted for change! Don’t forget!

  108. Moët et Chandon and Spanish wine; champagne is alright but mixture of Spanish wine and Moët & Chandon leaves a lot to be desired in terms of drinks…

If Lacierda really said that “Mislang, like him, did not realize while tweeting and posting on Facebook that she is a government official,” then, Pinas is in bigger trouble — president is surrounded by unreliable and naive people.

Agree with Olan. Seems like the running of the Philippines is being done barkada style.

An0?????????

  111. henry90 henry90

“Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Mislang, like him, did not realize while tweeting and posting on Facebook that she is a government official.”

Maybe a lame excuse but true. It may be true na exchanges between friends lang dapat yun pero sa social networking, wala kang privacy. Anybody can see your tweets and FB posts. Kaya nga tayo gumagamit ng username dito sa Ellenville, save for the owner of this blog, dahil ayaw nating magpakilala at para makapagmura tayo ng husto kung kanino man tayo galit. Nagpakatotoo lang si Miss Lang. Tanga nga lang. Wala pa namang hospital para doon. 😛

  112. henry90 henry90

    Pareng Tedanz:

. .hehehe. . 😛

  113. #174 Reyna Elena- “Listening Umagang Kay Ganda: magaling sumalat si mai? “ay i cannot say that! wala pa akong nababasa!” bwahahahaha I LOVE IT! hahaha!”

Reynz, incomplete. I said “wala pa akong nababasa na magandang speech ni Noynoy.”

  114. Mon Mon

    #127 – Ellen

It is possible that it is also intentional to water down the speeches of P-Noy for a reason:

P-Noy is not exactly articulate. So, to give him polished speeches will only highlight that he is reading somebody else’s work. One is rendered less believable if his day-to-day conversation with the media, government functionaries and the business community is too different when he gives formal speeches.

Of course, after reading a few postings of the tactless and power-mesmerized speechwriter, I would opine that she was taken in by P-Noy’s team simply because she has a padrino.

A ghost writer she is not. She has what appears to be an insatiable fixation of being surrounded by “powerful” people, and to trumpet this “accomplishment” to the world.

More often than not, those who are awed by “people in power” have a deep-seated contempt for those they perceive to be powerless. A dangerous breed.

  115. baycas2 baycas2

New media is public domain. Oh, how we love the internet…

On her blog post “Batanes 2008 Day II (PM) – Fundacion Pacita,” Carmen “Mai” Mislang said:

Wine was overflowing. The cheese was fantastic! Everyone was hammered after all that singing and drinking. The single malt whiskey was poison!!! Boss said the Batanes police could easily charge me with “improper waste disposal.” Wahahaha! Yeah, I went home happy 😀

Somewhere in her “Excess ain’t rebellion…” blog, Mislang (“hoochiecoochiegal” handle) also said she was formerly a Shangrila Makati employee doing “press releases, media relations, speaking engagements, interviews, etc.” She was recommended for a similar job in then Sen. Noynoy Aquino’s (the one referred to as “Boss” in the quote above) stable by Julia Abad (Butch Abad’s daughter and now PMS chief). Mislang got the job while still employed at DSWD, i.e., according to her (I’ll leave the judging to the reader if there was conflict here somehow.). Some of her pictures uploaded on her Multiply blog show some of the members of Hyatt 10.

In short, she really has “connections.”

I would expect she resigns out of propriety. This will definitely sever the ties.

A bad manner committed can only be reversed by an equally measured good manner. Just taking down her twitter account (or whatever new media she got – FB or Multiply) will not suffice. Besides, as Ellen blog post’s says…they are FOREVER!

Here is again the link where loads of pictures (including Ellen’s latest uploaded pic) may be viewed:

    Thanks, Baycas.

  117. 2008 postings? you got to be kidding! 🙂
of people having a good time…hmmmmm…impropriety indeed, everyone should not have a good time…
…maybe some people here are too miserable that they want everybody to be miserable too? fire someone for having a good time? thats a first…
if I remember it right, there was this high level official who did this every night, midnight cabinet they call it, but he never got fired for that? and there’s this other one who has people killed by allies but the uproar was never this serious…she’s liable to get away with it and get richer to boot…
…what do you expect from people who made the hayden kho videos a national calamity? this is a national calamity?
nah, we just like to pick on people because we love the “unholy glee” of taking down a target…in some places, they call this cyber bullying…
…then again, if engaging in such activities gives you guys the fulfilment you yearn for in your lives – by all means, fulfill yourselves, so this is you’re idea of doing good for humanity? its an aching you want to soothe, dig some more, its an itch that needs to be scratched, or a soreness that needs to be caressed…or a form of deep seated patriotism? she must be a threat to national security? to national morals then? the ultimate show unprofessionalism? hmmmmmm….after all this “off with their heads!” clamor since the new administration started, people behaving like the queen of hearts with a big head and everyone around her took on an imperfection just to please her, never mind if it made them look ridiculous…love it, enjoy it, do whatever makes you happy…life is too short… 🙂

From now on, Malacanang should pass a decree that no one, working in Malacanang, is connected to the present occupant, trying to connect with the occupant or serving in any other capacity that will identify him/her as ‘konektado’ sa “Boss” kesehodang alalay lang, is allowed to make a mistake, wittingly or unwittingly. Being human is no excuse. Facebook and Twitter accounts are not allowed. Everyone should be more popish than the Pope. Violators will be excoriated in blogs, until of course, something more ‘worthwhile’ pops out in the news! 😛

  119. Mon Mon

Yup. It is exactly how the honor code of PMA eroded to sloaganeering.

Perfection is not what is asked. Simple decency, that being an official family of the Presidency, the standard, if they are not aware of this, if a bar far higher than “human beings, prone to make mistakes.”

The example of “tuwid na daan” must come from them no less.

  120. baycas2 baycas2

Mislang made a simple but irresponsible deed and a netizen like me find it improper.

Mislang made a mistake and was just slapped on the wrist because it appears she has “ties that bind.” This, too, I find improper.

I believe she needs to resign…if only to remind her that as a government official GMRC must be demanded at all times. Bad manner exacted by good manner. No amount of apology and/or second chance can top that.

#133,We now accept that different rules apply to those close to Aquino and his trusted friends. As Erap said, weder-weder lang yan.

That’s why hanggang blog na lang kami.

  122. Karen Cardenas sent me the link to this article of Ricky Carandang wrote in April 2010, when he was not yet one of Aquino’s communication secretaries:(http://www.rickycarandang.com/?p=506)

When I was studying in Ateneo, I was taught that punishing someone when they do wrong not only serves as a disincentive for bad behavior, but it also reflects the broader values that a society believes in. When you let someone off the hook after they have admitted wrongdoing, you trivialize the wrongdoing and send a message to your community that there are no negative consequences for bad behavior.

  123. henry90 henry90

Yup. The same standard that most UP or even Ateneo graduates in government could not live up to also. 😛

Henry at #34..it is not that Government workers in the Province of Ontario Government make a fool of themselves using social networking account but to their dismay one morning all social networking accounts were blocked in all government networking..it is perhaps most spent their time facebooking or whatever…but then again, most can use their blackberries and iphones, and then again, kind of hard to spend hiding most of the time except during their breaks.

  125. Mike Mike

  127. mike,
this usually happens when you have a young team. in my lifetime i had my share of defending my people also, from other department bosses, team mates, customers, even owners of the company…there are times that people will question your decisions about relieving and retaining people, its part of leading, but for as long as you are aware of your individual team members’ strengths and areas for improvement its going to be okay. its better that issues like this come out early in the game so you can correct them, tweak the team a bit…i’d rather have aggressive, confident, and even cocky, people in my team, who have high energy levels rather than be stuck with docile cattle that needs prodding to move…you just give them a direction and they move on their own…self starters…of course you have to contend with several challenges because they have their own minds, then again, thats why you’re there…

  128. totoy_ungas totoy_ungas

{On Mislang} – She’s young, bright, supposedly ugly and I’m assuming, miserable esp. nowadays. By some equally ugly accident or given Pnoy’s thoughtless ways, Miss Mai Mislang got into Malacanang (the same way her boss did). Now she has a new garb, one that allows her to project herself as someone that might not be who she really is, well at least thru immediate impression (since a lot of us, her countrymen live and die through first impressions anyways). So it happened. A lot of people noticed her this time and we all got critical given the ubiquity of the medium she used and the background where she set off projecting how she wants to be perceived – presumably a connoisseur and a casual critic of something not so pleasing to her taste or sense of order (which by the way is why I gather she’s miserable being herself).
{On Mislang, me and others like us} – Anyway, superiority (even if only mistakenly deduced) almost always breeds contempt. Maybe she was in one those heady moments where she wanted to impress her perceived ascendancy. Sometimes I myself feel superior like many of us do. Fools like us have been brought up by the world this way. We are glad when we see ourselves on a plain above the rest. The marked difference between her and others like her and me this time is that I don’t go off ridiculing an entire host country. I won’t and I can’t even if I would want to. She can and she did.
So why the hell is she still in Malacanang? To that I would add, why is Rico Puno still around? Why is Carandang, who as reported, publicly contradicted his president practically calling the latter ignorant (even if he knows him more than the public do, though that’s arguable) and more, still working for the president? As one of my jolly old friend would always say: “Birds of same feather are the same birds.” It’s the dark ages in RP people but that’s not a reason for us for be too gloomy. We’ll all live through this, don’t worry.

  129. baycas2 baycas2

    Moving on…

Mislang (and most likely, even Carandang) tweets on official time (like when she tweeted through the government Twitter account the In-and-Out Burger feast of P.Noy in U.S.) and on unofficial time (like when she tweeted through her own Twitter account how the suck wined in Vietnam).

Where to draw the line between official time and unofficial time? I guess, only by what specific social media account she uses. Other than that, the line is obscured. Same thing with her personal life and being a public servant, the distinction is not clear cut.

I think it’s safe to assume that there was free Wi-Fi available then during the Vietnam gala dinner. So, pretty sure no government fund was spent for the internet use. Nonetheless, the President’s fund that brought her to Vietnam as a delegate made her presence there an official one. She was tweeting, therefore, on government time.

Now comes the matter of coming up with guidelines on social media (Guidelines for social media set)…not only for public officials in general…but particularly for public officials concerned with Communications. Former blogger Dawin (Lacierda) was confused on how to act in certain situations when he said, “Just like me, we tweet and use FB but you don’t realize that you are a government official.

NBA restricts players from tweeting during a game and 45 minutes before and after the game. (It’s a harsh restriction to some, I read. However, the good thing about it is that it’s a limited restriction because players don’t play all day!)

What then will be the rule for Mislang (and Carandang) whose “game” is 24/7 and yet needs social media to communicate whatever she needs to communicate…officially and unofficially?

  130. i’d rather have aggressive, confident, and even cocky, people in my team, who have high energy levels rather than be stuck with docile cattle that needs prodding to move…you just give them a direction and they move on their own…self starters…of course you have to contend with several challenges because they have their own minds, then again, thats why you’re there…

    Agree.

But you said it Jug, “you just give them direction and they move on” — wonder if there’s any direction given at all by Malacanang to their staff as in, “rules of engagement”. Without a formal set of guidelines or directions, things like the Mislang debacle will happen again.

Of course, no guarantee that debacle won’t happen again even with guidelines but there’s every chance, will limit risk things going as bad as this latest fiasco.

  131. Nonetheless, the President’s fund that brought her to Vietnam as a delegate made her presence there an official one. She was tweeting, therefore, on government time. – baycas

The Vietnam trip was a state visit, all expenses were shouldered by the host gov’t.

Doesn’t that make the rude tweets all the more brutal?

  132. baycas2 baycas2

    brutal indeed!

  133. Tongue, in a state visit, the host country shoulders the accommodation and transport (cars) expenses of the core official party.Usually, that’s the president his wife plus two or three members of his party.

I don’t think Mislang is included in the core group.

In oil-rich Middle East countries, the host takes care of everything, even laundry and sauna, of everybody including media. That happened in the state visits of FVR to Kuwait, Saudi, UAE. Libre use of hotel amenities. nag-sauna kami.

I think it was in UAE where when we were preparing to depart, we were each given a watch, expensive -designer watch. I forgot the brand. It’s European. Something like El..Can’t remember. I got a man’s watch so I gave it to my brother.
