Hundreds of Abu Sayyaf terrorists on Tuesday ambushed Marine soldiers involved in the search for Italian priest Giancarlo Bossi in Basilan, killing 14 and wounding nine, Marine spokesman Lt. Col. Ariel Caculitan said yesterday.
He said 10 of the fatalities were found beheaded near the encounter area in the village of Ginanta, Tipo-Tipo early yesterday. The identities of the fatalities were withheld pending notification of kin.
It was the biggest Marines casualty since 2005 when 12 troopers died in a clash with the Abu Sayyaf in Patikul, Sulu.
But Mohagher Iqbal, chief negotiator for the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, said the men encountered by Marine soldiers were not Abu Sayyaf but MILF forces.
“They (soldiers) entered the area without coordination with the MILF-CCCH (Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities). That’s the reason why we had the encounter,” he said. “Our forces were attacked, we only defended ourselves.”
The CCCH oversees the implementation of the ceasefire forged in 2002. Formal peace negotiations between the two sides hit an impasse late last year.
Caculitan said the 50 Marine soldiers were on their way back to headquarters aboard M35 trucks when fired upon by at least 300 men at around 10 a.m. triggering a nine-hour gun-battle.
Iqbal said the MILF will file a protest for the violation of the cease-fire agreement.
“The government knows, the military knows the area is a bailiwick of the MILF ever since… First of all, there should be coordination if there is a massive deployment of troops, movement of troops on either side,” he said.
He said four MILF rebels died and seven others were wounded. He said 100 MILF forces were involved.
He said he believes the MILF forces killed 25 soldiers, seized 27 assault rifles and destroyed two military trucks.
Caculitan maintains the attackers were composed of a mixed forces coming from the ASG and lawless armed groups in the area.
“In case they (MILF) are involved, we would seek the intervention of the cease-fire committee to investigate the matter and conduct appropriate action,” he said.
Caculitan said the soldiers were sent to Tipo-Tipo town to verify the reported sighting of Fr. Bossi.
“Our troops were not able to physically identify or locate Fr. Bossi so we are not in a position to say whether he is there or not,” he said.
Fr. Bossi was snatched by rogue MILF fighters last June 10 while on his way to say Mass in a village in Payao town in Zamboanga Sibugay.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita is confident that this “unhappy development” would not lead to the collapse of the peace talks.
“We are in a very good footing dahil it’s being moderated by Malaysia and sa palagay ko naman hindi papayagan ng MILF na sumabog itong peace process just because of the action there in Basilan,” Ermita said.
But Ermita said the government will bring the incident to the attention of the Ad-Hoc Joint Action Group of the GRP and MILF panels, the CCCH and the Malaysian-dominated International Monitoring Group. – Victor Reyes, Jocelyn Montemayor and Reuters

But immediately below, you will see a little lady smiling who appears to be Mrs. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. It might be just a sheer coincidence or the Inquirer is playing naughty as usual?
Whatever is the motive of the Inquirer, I’m wondering that after a full day, there’s not a word or a whimper from Gloria Arroyo on the death of our soldiers, not even thru Sec. Ermita who was more concerned on the peace talks between the MILF and the government.
Of course I pray for our gallant soldiers but I also think of and say a prayer for the innocent the people living there under these ‘war’ conditions with no alternative because to them it is their home. Even WW@ was over inside five years, are we failing our Mindanao citizens by not finding a way to peace. It seems we will never learn from history.

We all know that many have profited from the war and conflict that was ongoing in the South, on both sides. The “Military Officers” had been known to profit from the Miltary supplies they even sold to the enemy and so were the Leadership of the Rebels. It’s no wonder that the peace process still not progressing at all, business is good, only the “foot soldiers” suffer and the Government and the Insurgent Leadership can sustain such….

My God! Poor soldiers… a war in the name of Gloria!
Those soldiers are all vulnerable for attack if they are inadequately trained. I guess their commander is not properly train in crossing enemy lines. They must have a plan to avoid those kind of casualties. In common encounter situation, the platoon leader must make a decision rapidly and to issue brief oral orders quickly. If the enemy initiate contact, the platoon need to take action. I am sure the Lt. who’s the leader of this platoon knows his Battle Drill.
The question now, How many casualties among the enemies? The firefight is a clear indication of an ambushed, but a soldiers being decapitated, what kind of soldiers composed the platoon? Don’t they have guns and they let the enemy chopped their heads? I will agree more if the whole platoon perished in combat, what happen to the platoon leader? He is incompetent in a combat situation, the way I analyzed the event.
I remember that the negligence of the government for not keeping these soldiers adequately equipped (butas-butas na bota and everything) was one of the complaints submitted by the Magdalo mutineers to the criminal prior to their mutiny.
This insurgency has been going on for decades because of government neglect as a matter of fact, but the most nauseating statements so far were given by the creep who pretends to know the problem but does not know a bit, and the only thing she has in mind right now is make use of this insurgency as a valid reason for allowing foreigners to fight the insurgents because she cannot actually get rid of them as she has boasted of, “Isang bala lang sila!” Oh, yeah? I thought when Nur Misuari returned from Libya after EDSA 1, I thought things would be rosier for the Moslems in Mindanao. Hindi pala. One problem was a lot many of those who joined Misuari found themselves landless with a lot many of them losing their lands to landgrabbers. Many were impoverished by the long struggle against a neglectful government, and a lot of them found themselves deep in debt that they had to agree to have their lands taken from them by usurers with government connections.
This kind of stories in fact I have gathered from interviews with parents of Moslem children being slave traded to Luzon and elsewhere that a Japanese TV company I’m doing translations for have done a documentary. It was pathetic and my heart bled for those children who could not even avail of free education.
I cannot help feeling sorry for these Moslems caught in between, and for the Philippine soldiers who are being pitted with the Abus, whom the unano cannot after all eradicate with one “bala”! Inutil talaga!

Try to verify first if the person is in the payroll or not under the Office of the VP. Chances are, Noli de Castro will deny he’s on the payroll but working voluntarily. The Mindanao problem may be a perennial one by choice. It has been a source of income by many (guns and all). It is a rich source of electoral votes to pad votes for the incumbents’ candidates who desperately want to win in any election, national or local. It is a haven for warlords and because of its fertile land, agricultural elite enjoy the ownership of the biggest farms in the country.

I’ss wrong to think in terms of there’s only one social and religious belief on Mindanao, the 2nd largest island.
Other countries, examples found in Europe where different religions have intergrated and live, work and build better lives together for the communities where they reside, so why can’t it be done here in the philippines? We should find and try a different approach to intergrate religious groups.
Surely we should be copying Europe where public disorder through religios disagreements are not sorted by military forces. Why? because the military are trained to kill, so don’t be surprised when wholesale killings happen on the island of Mindanao, when the solution is Jaw Jaw not War War.
BTW the vast majority of the population there is christian.

My very close friend, former Marine Soldier, seen combat in Mindanao, specifically in Basilan in the 80’s for seven years, wounded in Action, earned his purple heart told me that in MILF land, Your “friend” could be your Enemy. Contrary to the presidential directive to go after the Moro Islamic Liberation Front following Tuesday’s bloody clash, Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr opted Thursday to exercise restraint in its ongoing offensive against the separatist rebels.
Esperon said he is holding their punches because “we have peace process that is ongoing” and an investigation into the bloody encounter is underway.
“With the death of 14, 10 of whom are beheaded, there is a natural tendency to be angered by the dastardly act but our soldiers are keeping their cool, their senses, keeping in mind that this is not all about just getting back at the perpetrators,” said Esperon.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo earlier Thursday ordered the military to “hunt down” those who killed 14 Marines and beheaded 10 of them following an encounter in Tipo-Tipo town in the island-province of Basilan.

There is something terribly wrong in the available details of the report which portrays a bunch of bumbling marines. These guys are so well trained (even if by despised Americans) they are considered the elite of the AFP. What does an old salt (naval officer with sealegs) know about Marines? One of my junior officers aboard the PC eventually transferred to the Marines and rose to the rank of Commandant, although we lost contact before this promotion. His active style cost him his life in a crash of one of those hand-me-down choppers.
If you observe closely, the Marines are equipped with weapons not seen with other AFP units. I surmise these are weapons left behind deliberately by their American partners in scheduled joint military exercises. These are not the only things the Yanks pass on. The élan and esprit de corps of the Philippine Marines, not higher pay or benefits, distinguishes this branch from the rest of the uniformed services. Believe it or not, this trait was acquired from their constant partners mimicking combat, the U.S. Marines.

To Alex & All His Incoming Cronies
First of all, I extend my deepest sympathy to the families of the brave marines. It is tragic to know that due to the incompetence of officers starting from the head of state to the chief of staff, these brave marines paid a brutal price with their lives.
Re: Ellen’s integrity, pay heed. Although she is not financially well off, her conviction and passion for truth and justice are the cornerstones of her integrity and indisputable honesty. Let me share some events. When she had her cancer surgery years back, her family pooled money to help her. Combined with her savings and loans from concerned benefactors like her publisher, she paid her medical bills and her stay at PGH (not St Luke’s) which she could afford. (And it was just as well because the PGH doctors were excellent!) Some politicians gave financial help – but she redirected this to PGH as funds for indigents to avail of – at the very least – the benefits of anesthesia before surgery. (I made a donation myself to this fund later.) It is worthy to note that one financial assistance came from a senator whose check did not have sufficient funds.
It is worth to add too that every time Ellen went home to the province, politicians – from mayor, congressman to governor – offered to fetch her in their vehicles. She always refused these offers, took the bus and paid her fare . Perhaps due to her moral tenacity, the offers had stopped. These are only a few of many events that reveal her moral fabric and ethics – traits apparently lacking, if not nil, in a person like you. A bribe for Ellen? Even in her biggest scare and need to live, she never compromised her integrity for convenience. How about a reversal – for someone like you who casts malicious and unconfirmed attacks with murderous intent – a bribe for you seems more apropos.
“Anong nagawa niya sa bayan?” Exposing the graft & corruption of the government officials is her noble service to our people and country. Wherever truth and honesty prevail, a vacuum always trails and quickly fills up with the ambiguousness and crookedness of politicians. This vacuum has grown and has now become an abyss. Ellen and her fellow bloggers are sharing and dissecting this abyss with their vast wealth of knowledge and information to make people aware and conscious of this dismal reality. Understandably, you are incensed… your malicious comments place you as a prop for the present Fantasia whose denizens merrily live in comfort from stolen wealth and plundered loot and fully desensitized from surrounding realities.
Check this grand and global reality, Alex: Philippines ranks first in Asia for corruption and notoriety for extra-judicial killings because of bad governance. You are identifiably a lackey with your leanings and accusations. I only pray that people your kind who help to perpetuate personal aggrandizement, plunder and murder do not vex God’s wrath to allow doom and revolution to restore our people’s birthright to peace, freedom, justice and prosperity.

Hug, you are absolutly right about Ellen’s simplicity and integrity. She is definitely a one-of-a-kind journalist! May she live long to write about the truth!
God has preserved Ellen because her country and people need her. She is in fact setting a good example of faith, action and perseverance. We are here because we share her sentiments, and through her we are able to make a contribution that mind you, is not really that small.

You bet. Good governments actually don’t deal nor negotiate with organizations of criminals. Over in Japan, we have the Yakuza, but never have I heard of the government of Japan giving the Yakuza concessions, etc. to make them cooperate with the government or for maintaining peace and order in the land.
What they did here is pass a law defining the Yakuza as a criminal organization that can be subject to police surveillance and control, and any violation of the Anti-Crime Gang Law will mean punishment by imprisonment and fine.
Beat me why they cannot do the same in the Philippines. Talaga naman! Puro yabang lang, wala namang ibubuga!!!
May tanong lang po ako: Anong katibayan na talagang pinugutan ang mga sundalo? Dapat ipakita nila di ba? O baka gawa-gawa lang iyan para may dahilan na lusubin ang kuta ng mga kaaway ayon na din sa utos ng mga Kano?
