Trillanes: Govt execs led Marines to death trap

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on Tuesday accused high ranking government officials of having a hand in the ambush that killed 14 members of the Philippine Marines on July 10 in Al-Barkah, Basilan, ABS-CBN News reported.

In his proposed Senate Resolution No. 72, Trillanes revealed he received information on the involvement of several high ranking officials of the government.

“Whereas, there have been serious insider information reaching this representation that ranking officials of the government had a direct hand in feeding our own military to the enemies of the state that led to the tragic death of the fourteen members of the marine corps,” Trillanes said.

Trillanes, however, did not identify the “ranking officials”. The resolution did not provide details.

The former Navy officer said it is the government’s responsibility to protect and serve the interests of the people including the military and “definitely not to have them senselessly massacred on purpose”.

Trillanes added that it is the duty of the Senate to determine the true national policy regarding security situation in Mindanao implemented by the Arroyo administration.

The senator urged the Senate to “direct the committee on national defense and security to inquire and investigate in aid of legislation the alleged direct knowledge and involvement of ranking government officials in the recent ambush and mutilation by extremist groups of fourteen soldiers belonging to the Philippine Marine Corps.’

Trillanes said in the resolution that the probe should determine the culpability and liability of the officials held responsible for the ambush.

Senate: No probe

Prior to Trillanes’s proposed resolution, several members of the Senate have agreed to suspend calls for an investigation into so-called operational lapses and equipment defects after the Basilan ambush and recent fighting in Sulu.

Senate President Manuel Villar and Senators Edgardo Angara, Richard Gordon, Francis Pangilinan and Gregorio Honasan, who all attended the National Security Council meeting Tuesday, agreed that politicians should not step in and call a probe into military operations in Mindanao.

They said that no investigation should be done while there is an ongoing offensive and while the military is conducting its own internal probe.

Trillanes’s call came after Sen. Rodolfo Biazon declared that the Senate defense committee will not yet investigate the twin tragedies suffered by the military in Basilan and Sulu.

“Let’s give the defense department and the armed forces a chance to correct the lapses since they themselves admitted the lapses,” said Biazon, chairman of the defense commitee.

Biazon, however, said Trillanes’s proposed resolution has prompted the defense committee to schedule a hearing on the July 10 ambush in Basilan.

“I can only table this scheduled hearing of the resolution if Senator Trillanes will be allowed to attend hearings because he and he alone would know the identity of these ranking government officials,” said Biazon.

Trillanes is currently detained for his alleged involvement with the botched Oakwood mutiny in 2003. With reports from Lynda Jumilla and Jing Castañeda

Without AT4 speaking in the Senate, wala ring aasahan ang mga sundalo!

  10. Ellen:

Re the case of Senator Trillanes and his friends, if ever they should only be charged with insubordination as in the case of some men in the Israel Army who have staged similar act of insubordination re order of their leaders versus Palestiinian civilians that people around the world even abhor.

In the case of the Magdalo soldiers, they were in fact showing contempt and disgust against a criminal who had committed treason and sedition when she led an elitist mutiny herself against a duly elected president, and yet to commit a similarly serious crime of plunder by squandering the OWWA funds, etc. to buy votes during the 2004 election in addition to the massive election cheating committed with these generals now murdering these marines.

The Magdalo soldiers were actually promised leniency, and reason why they were pacified to give up their fight and cooperate (at least this was how I thought it was when I saw Cimatu, et al coming out with the lesser ranks among them after talking to their leaders) to make things better for the Philippines and Filipinos, but apparently, it was all a trick, and their incarceration meant only to weaken the toughest of them, and make sure that they are turned into what my mother describes as “sundalong kanin, labas ang mga tumbong.”

And so, like the rest of the diehard bloggers here blogging for truth and justice, I say, “Arya, Senator Trillanes, pagbutihin mo! Hindi ka nag-iisa! Kasama mo milyong-milyong pilipino! Sibakin ang kriminal na maldita di primera y prinsesita impakta!”

  11. In Israel, the soldiers are not subjected to the kind of injustice the Magdalos are being subjected to. They are subjected to only some military discipline that does not merit any jail term, nor incarceration for life as the case seems to be in the case of Senator Trillanes and company. Iyan ang bobo! In fact, iyong judge should be ordering investigation of the person or persons they have complained about and free them to help in the investigation of their complaints. Bobo kasi kaya mali ang decision!

  12. The justice department should be free of the idiot running the country now like hell. The judges there should be determined to fight for the honor and integrity of the court.

Pero sabi nga ng kaibigan ko who left the Philippines to practice his profession overseas out of frustration for the graft and corruption in the Philippines where he said he would not like to end up a nervous wreck or an abogago de kalimbang, and get used to the lagay instead of upholding truth and justice.

    Yup, ang problema, Ang Lagay!

  13. The marines being sent to Mindanao should themselves refuse to be deployed without guaranty that they are being set for an ambush for the Malacanang occupant to make good publicity of. Dahil ba kasi takot silang palitan ng mga nire-recruit ng unano ngayon to fill up possible vacancies with the deaths of the conceived run-out troops whose former troop leaders now are in incarceration? This should be one angle of the probe according to a friend of mine.

A few months ago, in fact, I posted such information in this blog, that the unano is recruiting new soldiers to replace the old ones, especially the wannabe mutineers, et al, accordingly to my source. Now, she brags likewise of replenishing the PNP with 3,500 or more new policemen.

Is this why the AFP soldiers are now free to be annihilated and killed? Anyway, they can be replaced with soldiers ala-Macabebens of old who gave the natives of Pampanga the unpalatable title “dugong aso!” Tindi rin ano? 🙁

  15. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

The Senate should also review the bilateral and multilateral agreements between the Philippines and other foreign powers. There are gray areas on war on terrorism in lieu with Philippine sovereignty. National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales admitted that agents of the US Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Australian Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the British M15 are operating in Mindanao and all over the Philippines in the pretext to fight global terrorism.

  16. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

The Arroyo government particularly NSC chief Norberto Gonzales knows the real Bossi kidnappers are poor fishermen. Why the government quickly tagged the Abu Sayyaf is the culprit? The Tipo-Tipo fiasco and the Bossi kidnapping may complete the conspiracy puzzle. It’s all about money disguised as military-economic aids.

Fishermen, not Abu Sayyaf, seized Bossi — Italian envoy

MANILA, Philippines — Father Giancarlo Bossi has testified before an investigating anti-terrorist magistrate in Rome that he was kidnapped by 10 poor Filipino fishermen and not by members of the Abu Sayyaf as earlier reported, and that his kidnapping was a simple case of kidnap for ransom.

If Fr.Bossi was saying the truth, it only meant that the renewed/new war was premedidated and well planned by the concerned person, and the bill that Senator Sonny just filed re death trap has bases.

Fr. Bossi was made a goat in this military “operation”.

I question if all these other Senators have received similar information from various sources about the false claims being made about the Marine massacre but unlike Senator Sonny Trillanes failed to have the courage to persue this crime because it is said that members of the
government executive are involved in such a crime and too hot to handle not that its unbelievable.
It takes somebody with the determination and the strength of character to bring this out in the open and reveal the true character of members of the government executive.

The Marines Corp and the people of Mindanao are perhaps thinking that they have been abandoned from what is right and just – but there is a plan and a time – maybe this is the time to reveal all

To Sonny Trillanes we say, do what you have to do for the sake of the country and for Truth & Justice. .

Wala namang mahuhuling Abu Sayyaf talaga e. Mas lalabas na palpak ang liderato.

i hope trillanes expose on the tipo-tipo incident will reveal that soldiers had earlier killed an imam that helped them when they’re military truck got stuck in the mud just hours before they were ambushed. they killed the poor imam thinking he was an asg informer. they realized he was an imam and the trouble they got themselves into after killing him. a source that was among the joint cch group that went to investigate the basilan incident said, those among the locals on the ground that they interviewed said the body of the imam was later on found mutilated as well. it was hours after that the ambush on the marines took place, had they not kill the imam who even helped them on the road, there wouldnt be any basilan incident to investigate in the first place. this story on the mutilated imam never made it to the report of the joint cch group that conducted a probe.

  40. terra cotta soldier terra cotta soldier

the tipo-tipo incident was a set-up to justify the all-out offensive why the military is now into in jolo and basilan. the offensive had been planned in june. Among other objective was to put to test on the ground the the us-australia-rp “cooperation” in mindanao. US and Australian forces as the Phil govt put it are there to “train, assist and advise” RP troops. But there was inactivity on the part of the enemy then that gave no reason to launch an offensive until the Bossi kidnapping, yet the priest was taken to Lanao and that is a far cry from Basilan and Jolo as coverage of the operation plan.

The tipo-tipo incident, as per govt line, was an offshoot of the search and rescue efforts on Bossi as there was an intelligence information of the captors in the area that the marines went out to check. It wasnt an intelligence information, it was an order from the headquarters to scour the place to find Bossi yet at that time security forces already knew that contacts had been made with the priests captors and negotiations are underway.

At the time of the order to scour tipo-tipo to search for Fr. Bossi, malacanang, dnd and military already knew that the priest will be released at an assured time “before the sona and the malacanang launch of the Human Security Act implementation.” What the intel information actually was about enemy position – milf troop formation in that area.

The marines were ordered to proceed without knowledge of the nuance and dynamics of prior coordination with MILF thru the CCH channel, or maybe with the assumption that the order came already with the necessary coordination for their pursuit operation, after all the operation came from the headquarters who should know best about proper protocol such as coordination.

Incidentally or it was timely that the Ad-hoc Joint Action Group which is the coordinating mechanism for AFP and MILF on pursuit operations had just completed its term (being only an ad-hoc committee by nature anyway)so there was no body to coordinate the military operation in an MILF-controlled area to begin with. And almost like a broken record we can hear the military talking about the tactical alliance of the asg, milf and mnlf on the ground.

But of course! does the military expect the MILF to help or for the MNLF to just stand watch the AFP exchange fire with the ASG in their area? And by the way, can military really tell who’s asg among them, do they wear a badge so the military would know who to shoot and who to avoid firing at?

As far as the MILF and the MNLF are concerned they are technically at war the govt and the military is the enemy so what do they do when the enemy in full battle gear and humvees stray their territory, serve them coffee?

Oh please stop these cliche about “tactical alliance” among MILF, ASG and MNLF if the military cannot even tell who’s who. And for military to say their all out war is only against Abu Sayyaf, stop this bullshit, you’re in moro land for crying out loud! you’re bullets cannot be discriminating as your distribution of food aid and relief for the people you just displaced and whose lives you just disrupted!

this is a clear picture that lead to the tragic death of 14 marines on july 10, 2007 in tipo-tipo basilan, where 10 of them were even beheaded and mutilated.

the lives of these poor soldiers being a “human life bait” by these evil creation gloria, esperon and cohorts for their own self-interest now leads to even more worst situation than ever before in philippine politics.

Just my observation.

Kawawang mga pilipino! Kawawang bansa! Nakakadugo ng puso sa totoo lang!

    terra cotta,
In an earlier thread, I summed up factual incidents Ellen’s bloggers have contributed, the killing and mutilating that MNLF imam included, and also summarized our conclusions on the real purposes for a new protracted war in the south. We, however, missed that one, as you said, “to put to test on the ground the the us-australia-rp ‘cooperation’ in mindanao”

We are also in agreement that the AFP cannot distinguish MI from MN from ASG, those they can’t identify are simply branded lost command or breakaway or double-breakaway, or plain enemy sympathizers.

This, I think, is the same reason why AFP is surprised it is facing retaliation from MNLF when it was MILF and ASG whom they were “fishing” for trouble when the live-bait soldiers were cast to Tipo-tipo. Military intellidiots didn’t have a clue Iskanul could be MN even if he was inside MI territory. These led to the Indanan and Maimbong incidents and voila! MNLF is roused from its slumber.

The AFP have added a new group name to the fray: MNLF Breakaway Group, still distinct from the earlier one called (ex-MNLF) Misuari Renegade Group. How convenient!

Ahh, there’s money coming in now. May giyera na. Esperon, Tolentino, and Cedo can now retire in comfort and style.

    Re: Lacson/Napoleon

Lacson, or any other legislator for that matter, cannot stop the war by investigating. The worst that can happen is that he will be slaughtered by both sides he won’t know what hit him. The officers whom he should seek to account for the “lapses” on one side, and the overly-eager soldiers itching to take revenge for their felled comrades, on the other.

Pls. understand, you do not call your husband home to make him explain while he is running amuck against the neighbors. You let him return to his senses first.

In the Mindanao situation, the wise thing is to ask Gloria to stop the carnage when the soldiers have evened up the score. We want the soldiers on our side, don’t we?

    Then we can investigate.

Although I also understand that there are civilians who may be hurt in the process, but at this point in the war, whoever is still in the war zone is no longer considered civilian, you are either working for the rebels or a military spy. It may be a blessing that the stupid generals have announced way ahead of their plans of assault.

Our soldiers have been trained to handle this situation at hand and with the heavily lopsided ratio in their favor, I don’t see why they should be threatened, not when all the enemies are long gone.

    Giyera-giyerahan nga e!

The idea, I think, is to keep the Abu Sayyaf moving because it is hard to find or spot them if they blend with the natives. When the natives start seeking refuge in camps downtown, the Abus are isolated in the mountains.

Don’t get me wrong. Although I am for wiping out the Abu Sayyaf or whoever is giving sanctuary to JI and Al-Queda leaders, I do not condone the savage baiting of our troops just so that our AFP idiots with stars on their lapel or their patrons in Malacañang have a reason for going into war for whatever personal greed.

Even peace can never be a reason for war.

“When the natives start seeking refuge in camps downtown, the Abus are isolated in the mountains.”
Maybe its easy to forget that through no fault of their own families were born in these places named Mindanao, married there raised their children in schools there run very small farms or business there, but then forced out by some military policy stating that they want all out war against 150 ragtag rebels, what gives us reason to think that innocent civilians who are both Christian & Muslim are into shielding these rebels – why do the AFP spend untold millions (literally UNTOLD millions) on their so called intelligent units.
It makes it worse when we in Mindanao know very well that if this senario was happening in Metro Manila with thousands of displaced families, disrupted schools, ruined livelyhoods on the pretense that ordinary citizens in Metro Manila were shielding rebels – there would be hell to pay, and rightly so.
The ordinary citizen in Mindano have been baited by the AFP at road blocks for years – we citizens on Midanao look for peace also but our cries for peace are unheard by this AFP & Administration Leadership due to corruption from top to bottom.
Do we already forget what gokusen has written in Ellensville? or was I dreaming!

    Gokusen,
I really doubt the sincerity of MILF. But I think I can sympathize with MNLF, or whatever that group Misuari is with.

Nakita mo na pala. Right, it was Zulfikli bin Hir in the news I posted a while back. The person arrested in the US is Rahmat Abdhir. And there are several things in the US investigations that point to MILF and ASG as JI coddlers, but that sorry incident with Alkanul dragged Misuari’s MNLF into this melee.

Actually, Zulfikli (aka Marwan) pala is a US-trained engineer and was added just this March to the list of Most Wanted Terrorists by the US. He carries a $5M bounty on his head. His brother Dany lost his leg at the Atrium Mall bombing in Jakarta in 2001 and was convicted. Marwan is the head of Malaysia’s mujahideen group KMM and after blowing his cover, fled to Mindanao in 2003 and was given sanctuary by MILF’s 106th and 109th Base Command in Liguasan Marsh, where he became a top trainer, according to the US.

With the expulsion of Umar Patek and Dulmatin from MILF camps and into ASG fold, he took over bomb-making training for the MILF and is implicated in last year’s bombings in Central Mindanao which destabilized the MILF-GRP peace talks. Marwan was about to be arrested by 2 policemen for the twin bombings in Aug. 10, 2006 but they were fired upon, then klled by MILF forces.

Now guess what, this April, Esperon announced that Zulfikli has joined Patek and Dulmatin in Sulu, but later, Dolorfino admitted he may still be in Central Mindanao with the Abus! Why then are they looking for him in Sulu now?

Gokusen, I came across this article by Zachary Abuza http://www.jamestown.org/terrorism/news/article.php which says:

As the peace process between the MILF and the government became deadlocked in late 2006, the ceasefire started to unravel. There were spates of bombings across Mindanao in September and October 2006, and January, June, July and August 2007. The prime suspect in the bombings was Abdulbasit Usman, whom the government alternatively identified as a member of the MILF or a renegade member of the MILF. The MILF denied that he was currently a member of the organization. Yet, according to Zulkifli, by January 2007 he and Abdulbasit Usman were living under the protection of Wahid Tondok’s men.

Wahid Tondok is MILF 109th Base Command head. Abuza goes further,

It is no secret that MILF hardliners see the proposed agreement as a sellout of the group’s objectives of an independent homeland and remain concerned that the protracted peace process is dissipating their military readiness.

The MILF were willing to provoke a major encounter in Basilan on July 11, in a joint operation with a large contingent of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) fighters (whose presence they deny) that resulted in the death of 14 Philippine Marines, 10 of whom were beheaded (Philippine Daily Inquirer, August 10).

If we are to believe what Abuza says, the MILF-GRP peace talks will achieve practically nothing in regard to that elusive peace in Mindanao, with the hardliners AGAIN spawning a new rebel group, like what Hashim Salamat did after the MNLF-FVR Gov’t accord was signed in 1996.

In the same article, Abuza says another MNLF group has joined the ASG in the mountains, fighting side-by-sde in their fiercest battle this year last Aug. 9 in Jolo. This is probably what is now called the MBG.

Ang gulo diba? Parami ng parami, para talagang bulate.

    WWNL,
Once and for all, they should end this war. Now. But while they’re at it, get ALL the Abus and the JIs who are entrenched in sympathetic camps provided with funds from mujahideen orgs worldwide. There will never be peace until all these animals are arrested or dead.

I say we face this problem now and if done right, it might as well be the beginning of lasting peace and even prosperity, then maybe, just maybe, we could live comfortably knowing that our southern brothers could go on their own peaceful lives without worrying anymore if the next bomb would drop on their roofs.

It’s easier said than done but the soldiers must really spare the innocent from the bastards. I think that is what really bothers us, right?

    Peace, out.

“… the soldiers must really spare the innocent from the bastards. I think that is what really bothers us, right?”

Yes, Tongue. It really bothers me that this gera-gerahan has so much collateral damage. If this is a real war for the nation’s security, it’s easier for me to accept the huge number of soldier and civilian casualties, pero gera-gerahan ito which does not justify lost of so many lives and bring sufferings to innocent civilians.

  57. Taragis 150 Abus hindi masupil? Kagaguhan na iyan. Sabi ni unano noon “Isang bala lang sila” when they were just a hundred in number (daw).

Bobo!

  58. Tongue:

From what I translate of interviews with the Al Qaeda done by Japanese media, iyong mga tumutulong sa mga Abus daw mostly mga Pakistani. Madali namang ma-spot sa totoo lang. Iyong JL, hindi ba Indonesian na nakakalusot via the pirate ships in Mindanao?

  59. Tribune banner says, “Trillanes dared: Name names” Wow, gago talaga! Why don’t they ask Esperon the truth? Why Trillanes, who is demanding that the authorities concerned should conduct a probe and punish the guilty, even including the criminal squatting at the palace by the murky river? Bobo!

  60. TonGuE-tWisTeD TonGuE-tWisTeD

    wwnl,
Whatever happened to your optimism? Forgive me if I come on as insensitive, though I’m not, but since we cannot do anything even if we are physically present in the war zone other than, maybe, zipping body bags or being put inside one ourselves, the only thing left to do is make it known to our AFP leaders, okay, the AFP leaders we can trust, that we condemn any and all civilian deaths and force their departure from a mind-set that collateral damages, whether inflicted by the state forces or those of the enemy, are totally unacceptable. Or we could do just what noble job you are doing now, like helping the displaced residents of war-torn villages. I understand fully your feelings, or your reservations. Gokusen’s, too.

Make no mistake, it’s still justice and truth I’m after, like we all are here. I’d like justice to be served to the 14 dead marines, most especially the 10 headless and mutilated ones. Never mind the Indonesian victims, or those of NY’s Twin Towers, or that Super Ferry ship, or Bossi, or the Burnhams. Shall we just let it pass and leave the mourning to their widows and children so we don’t affect the status quo? Shall we just let JI, Al-Queda, ASG, and other mass-murderers get away with their crimes and give them sanctuary undisturbed? Are we to allow or continue to allow foreign and local rogues to endanger the lives of our brothers in Mindanao? Hell no!

But I’m sure we are in agreement that our own forces should not harm innocent civilians, too. Anyway, those who are squeaky-clean should be pointing to the military who the real enemies are instead of just pretending they do not know them. I know it takes courage to do that but if that’s the only option, then so be it.

Remember, the only way for evil to win is for good men to do nothing? Or something like that. We cannot expect any gain without taking the risks.

Or do we just content ourselves with preserving the status quo?

Truth. I can be flexible with the investigations, the top brass to be investigated, anyway, are involved in backroom ops only and may not endanger our troops in the field. Now that AT4 is calling it, I am now all for it. It is imperative that AT4 heads the inquiry to raise further the clamor to allow his service in the Senate. He seems to have insider info that government fed our troops to the enemy. I’d like to know the truth behind that, too. Then comes justice.

    And I’m just being consistent.

  61. TonGuE-tWisTeD TonGuE-tWisTeD

    yuko,
Police matter nga iyan, but like what I posted above, (www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=1479#comment-338480) policemen serving the arrest warrant for Zulfikli were shot and killed by MILF troops. And it was MILF who killed the Marines in Basilan, too.

It’s puzzling, though, that they’re now running after MNLF in a different island, which gives us more reason to believe that AFP is fishing for a big, full-blown war. Unless, of course they are sure the same muderers are now in Sulu.

Our troops must never lose sight of their mission, at least the mission we are told they are carrying, that is, to arrest the perpetrators of the beheadings and bring them to justice.

Or else they fall into that old trap Gloria and her Generals have set for them – the never-ending war.
