A cookbook by Magdalos

pulutan-cover.JPGThe Magdalo is cooking something.

But not a coup that preoccupies the paranoid minds of Gloria Arroyo and her henchmen.

At the ongoing International Book Fair going at the World Trade Center on Roxas Boulevard, you will find at the booth of Anvil Publishing, “Pulutan: From the Soldiers’ Kitchen”.

The book is written by two of the detained Magdalo officers, Ensigns Elmer Cruz and Emerson Rosales. My friend, Yvonne Chua, and I edited the book.

Please get a copy. You will find the book delightful not only for its recipes but also for the anecdotes behind many of the items there.

Aside from the authors’ personal recipes, the book contains contributions from other detained officers. There’s one from Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV.

Here’s the introduction I did for the book:

“Pulutan: From the Soldiers’ Kitchen” is one proof that wonderful things can happen in the most unexpected places.

“During a break in the court-martial hearing of the Magdalo officers last January, a young Air Force officer, Lt. Ashley Acedillo, approached me to say that two of his colleagues were looking for a publisher for their cookbook. Could I help them?

“Ashley introduced me to Ensigns Elmer Cruz and Emerson Rosales, who showed me a bookbound copy of their cookbook, originally titled “Drunkards’ Delight.”
ens1-cruz.JPG

A cookbook by detained military officers!

It got me excited.”Elmer and Emerson have been in detention for almost four years for their alleged involvement in what is commonly referred as the Oakwood mutiny.

“On July 27, 2003, some 300 junior military officers and soldiers took over the Oakwood Hotel at the heart of the Makati Commercial Center and declared their withdrawal of support from the government of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. No blood was shed in the 19-hour siege.

ens1rosales.JPG“Having had Anvil as publisher, I offered to contact Karina Bolasco, Anvil’s assistant general manager and publishing manager, for Elmer and Emerson.

“It was Ashley who suggested to the two to include personal anecdotes about the featured recipes. I seconded the suggestion and offered editorial assistance.

“I also offered to find a good book editor for them. I did not have to exert extra effort to convince Yvonne Chua, who teaches journalism at the University of the Philippines and has an extensive background in book publishing when she was with the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism, to join the project.

“As detainees (at Fort San Felipe in Cavite), Elmer and Emerson’s communication with the outside world is restricted. That was a challenge we had to deal with. But as the cliché goes, if there’s a will, there’s a way. Suffice it to say that everything related to this project was done according to military rules and regulations.

“Pulutan: From the Soldiers’ Kitchen” is more than just a cookbook. It’s another inspiring story of how adversity can be turned into opportunity. Yvonne and I are glad to be part of it.” .

The book fair runs until Sunday. “Pulutan…” will be available in all National Book Store outlets and other major bookstores. It sells at P125.00 per copy.

  1. Ellen,

I would like to order copies of this cookbook. I love to cook myself and have joined in compiling several cookbooks in church that we have published but not commercially. May I know how I can get copies of this new cookbook?

  2. chi chi

    Wow! Tunay na Wow, Ellen.

So wonderful that the Magdalos are creatively productive inside jail!

Congratulations to all involved in this magnificent book project. Nakakatuwa!

Sige, magpapabili ako ng copies for our barrio. They sooo love Trillanes and Magdalos there.

  3. Chabeli Chabeli

This is great ! Galing ! I will most certainly get a copy.

Magdalo’s Cookbook: What are the recipes for genuine revolution? Pulutan’s bookcover looks like San Migs Pale Pilsen export brand. Well, it’s originally titled “Drunkards’ Delight.” I like Ilocandia’s kilawen bartekero-Imbaligtad. Naimas!

    Ellen,

    “Ensign, you resign !”

According to him, ayaw niya daw magamit yun position sa political ambition ni Adel. Grabe naman Sen.Kiko three years pa ang eleksyon at wala pa naman sinasabi si Atty Adel kung tatakbo siya sa eleksyon.

Dalawa lang ang nakikita ko na dahilan:

    1. Insecure
    2. Siguro minsan nag dinner sila ni Sharon then accidentally

Kaya please share this cookbook to Sen.

  13. Chi,

Kapareho mo ng timezone ang pesteng ito. As per my source, the Pidal lobby/publicity stunt group operates from the US, the Philippines (particularly Manila and Cebu) and Sydney, Australia.

By then, siguro nakalabas na ang mga Magdalo kaya we can really celebrate with them. Sarap!

  15. Please, concentrate on issues. I will delete all comments all distracting comments. Tigil na, please lang.

Ignore bloggers whom you don’t like.

  16. Thanks, Ellen, will order now. Magandang pangregalo sa mga kaibigan!

It just shows that the Magdalos are hindi ‘sundalong kanin’.

  18. Yup, Luzviminda, hindi sila “sundalong kanin!” Sila ang ulam! Joke only! 😉

  19. Come to think of it. All these talks of destabilization attempts by the PNP under order by the unano and her general (Assperon) are a reflection of their incompetence, etc. Why can they not see that? Bobo talaga!

Sa Bicol naman daw nagre-recruit ng destabilizers! (www.tribune.net.ph/headlines/20070831hed3.html)

Susmaryosep! Puede ba nakakasawa na! Kumain na lang sila ng pulutan, courtesy of the Magdalos in detention!

Magandang itayo sa The Fort, saan pa!

LIVER a la Gloria **Savor the flavor of fresh beef liver marinated in Gloria’s favorite cognac; grilled and topped with BASILAN, er, basil and cheesemelt with lemon squeeze, served with Sundalong Kanin – piping hot spicy rice topped with G.I. sardines or corned beef. Authentic battle-supply Skyflakes crackers with jumping shrimp salad and buillion soup for starters; guaranteed to keep you YAKKING and YAKKING all night long.

    Dessert:
Gambala-Maestrecampo Flipflops **Finest dessert pancakes in different flavors with cheese and syrup. Crushed nuts (not General Cimatu’s – he has none) optional. Try it, it will make you turn!

Or try our very own Oakwood Boodle Special **Private squad- or platoon-sized smorgasbord in our Basilan, Sulu or Tawi-tawi warrooms, the standing-only, barehand lunch or dinner buffet with menu selectable a la carte, served dishless on banana leaves set against authentic jungle warfare background, live bullets optional. Here we don’t usually say grace before meals, instead the usual shout: “Fight, boodle fight!”

    TO ALL
I know this to be out of place. Please bear with me. I just want to create awareness by choosing the busy forum or the latest.
Do consider Dr. Martin Bautista for the next elections obviously (a senatorial candidate of ‘Ang Kapatiran’ together with Adrian Sison and Zosimo Paredes). He’s a 44-year-old gastroenterologist in the US who came home after 17 years. You can see from his background that he truly means service. For those who find him to be a hypocrite for working abroad, do understand he’s a family man who needs to sustain his family, that he will be able to keep his independence by not relying on public funds to support his family. He helps his countrymen in his capacity but it’s just not enough for there are millions of Filipinos. It’s a good start in Philippine Politics to have him and his party around.
I urge you to forward/text/inform all your contacts about them. I believe they only lack exposure that’s why I’m doing this. But I can’t do it alone so I’m appealing to everyone’s help. If all will inform their contacts about them and urge them as well to forward, we might hit a million.
We cannot afford to be indifferent now if we want meaningful change. Otherwise we only have ourselves to blame. BUT TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

    kayo talaga, oo!

  32. Mrivera Mrivera

one reason why these youg officers came up with that recipe book is their desire to be sane. their innerselves keep on pounding their heads to go on and not succumb to bait esPWEron and his ilk offer for them to turn their backs from the cause they stood up for in july 2003.

i salute these brave young and patriotic officers.

  35. Hahahahahah! My dog is surprised once more – tawa ako ng tawa dito sa post ni Emil.

  36. Yuko,

Baka di mag-click iyang proposed cocktail mo “Bloody Gloria” – heh!

But am sure her clones and supporters will love it!

Ano kaya ang recipe? 1 shot of bourbon, 2 shots of the cheapest (not vintage) lambanog, add a shot of soya milk and a spoonfull of coconut milk and to make sure it looks bloody, mix a spoon of tomato paste, add a bit of salt and pepper plus crunched siling labuyo then pour pepsi; add crunched ice and stir (not shaken), decorate it with a little red pamaypay sporting Gloria’s face on the pamaypay!

    Presto! Bloody Gloria…

    Beeeeeurk!

(Sana mag-agree si baboy damo na asawa niya na gawing guinea pig taster ng ‘Bloody Gloria’ at pag hinimatay siya after drinking it, ayan, talagang Bloody Gloria!)

Welcome back, Anna, hope you & your family enjoyed the Asian trip.

  38. Hi Emil – thanks loads! We enjoyed our Asian trip immensely; can’t wait to get back.

But must confess something I clearly didn’t enjoy seeing Middle Eastern women by the hundreds roaming some of the places we visited wearing their black burkhas pushing their way into elevators with not even a pip to mean ‘sorry’. T’was more often than not a horrid sight coz I find this whole burkha for the women while men wore beach clothing particularly hypocritical; coz of the heat, some women jumped into the swimming pool garbed fully in burkha and wouldn’t take a no from swimming pool attendants.

I witnessed an incident when the husband of one (I think he was) had a screaming match with the swimming pool attendant and was clearly on the verge of hitting the poor attendant if cooler heads had not prevailed – the male Middle Easterner was screaming in Arabic while the hotel employee was trying to say it was forbidden for any fully clad or dressed person to jump into the pool in Bahasa, question of hygiene.

Everyone I talked to from chamber maids, taxi drivers, waiters, massage thereapists, tourist guides, etc. had nothing good to say about tourists from the Middle East. They were so disliked for being abbrassive and pompous yet stingy in the extreme.

I reminded one hotel employee that in exchange for some of the unpleasantries, these Middle Eastern tourists pour in 8 billion ringgits or a lot more than 2 billion US dollars yearly!

  39. florry florry

    Out of topic:
It seems gloria’s bad influence knows no bounds. Quentin Tarantino, the American movie director and actor was recently a “guest” of Gloria in Malacanang. In their brief encounter, maybe the former was deeply impressed or I would say influenced by the latter’s trashing of rules and terrorizing power that on his flight back to the US, he terrorized one of the flight attendants.
The news item reported that he made one of the flight stewardess cry by refusing to sit on his first class assigned seat and insisted on sitting on the seat of the flight stewardess or on the floor. Maybe he wants to do a-gloria who sits on a seat that doesn’t belong to her.

Estrada group gives P1M to kin of slain Army men

LUCENA CITY, Philippines -– The families of two Army soldiers killed last week in Sorsogon province wept in gratitude as they received P1 million in financial assistance from former President Joseph Estrada’s Saludo sa Kawal Pilipino Foundation (SKPF or Salute to the Filipino Soldier) in a ceremony here Friday.

    Almira, Aurellana’s common-law wife, received P500,000 while Raymunda got P300,000. Badagua’s mother, Proserfina also received P200,000. http://www.inquirer.net

    Florry,

Gloria just firmed up Tarantino’s lust for blood! Pareho sila na mahilig sa dugo!

  42. rose rose

Emil: Gusto ko yong idea mo. Doon sa amin sa Nogas Island, Anini-y, Antique, mayroon isang puno ng duhat..century old, so huge that it will take around 10 men to join their hands to get around it.

  43. chi chi

    Rose,

  45. Emilio_OFW Emilio_OFW

Anna – The main reason these Middle Eastern “tourists” are welcome to these countries and tolerate their uncivilized behavior is the money being spent during their Asian tours. Malaysia is known for fabrics and the Middle Eastern women love to spend on clothing materials. Most of these women are extremely rude and impolite.

    *****

One of these days the Philippines will be the butt of all nations again as when the word “Filipina” was included in the new Oxford English Dictionary to mean “domestic helper” with Gloria’s hocus-pocus economic progress. Hindi pa lang nakakahalata (o halata na hindi pa lang pumipiyak for it needs to be confirmed yet?) re the stronger peso vs the dollar. Ang laki ng effect ng ganyan pandaraya tantamount to black marketing to world economy as a matter of fact.

Imagine claiming economic progress when the Philippines cannot even produce food for its own people, etc. and the only export it has presently are Filipinos!

  48. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

“Imagine claiming economic progress when the Philippines cannot even produce food for its own people”

Gloria’s economic cookbook is filled with fantasy. Gloria Arroyo and her economic managers have the gal to tell the whole world that the agriculture sector is booming. Why they are importing agro products? In reality, the country cannot feed its own people. The Philippines is one of the biggest rice importers in Asia The country has imported 1.6 million tones of rice, corn, sugar, soya beans, poultry and meat. The usual government’s alibis for not meeting production goal blame the weather-drought, floods and typhoons. Makain ba ang fantasya?

  49. Emilio_OFW Emilio_OFW

    DKG/Yuko,

  50. chi chi

Also, there are 300 thousand to half a million Filipino mail- order brides leaving Pinas every year, Villar said. (Gabriela figure was used).

This is another disastrous recipe for pinoys, but in Gloria’s cookbook it is sooo gooooood!

  51. chi chi

    Ka Diego,

    Meron kumakain ng fantasya…si Gloria.

  53. You bet, Emil. Binibilang na naman niya siguro ang mauutang niya sa Japan, etc. countries she planned at the last quarter of the year. I have already mentioned the planned Japan tour that we suspect will be for asking Japan to replenish the Philippine coffers that has been depleted with funds these past few months because of the paybacks to those who helped her get votes for her losing team.

What Filipinos, however, should bear in mind is that the Philippines is deep in “utang,” and the remittances of the OFWs are not enough to pay back Philippine debtors.

It is no secret in fact that the doctor of Economics (daw) has been trying hard to impress foreign creditors by paying them first when the bills come, and her publicity manager making most of the occasion by presenting unsuspecting creditors and even the public with tampered data and statistics.

For how long can she continue to deceive everyone, only the Filipinos in fact can tell. All they have to do is have the guts to demand for better services from their public servants, which the unano, congressmen, senators, et al are and should be, and if they don’t, the should demand for their removal. Pronto! Ganoon lang naman iyon sa totoo lang.

  58. Off topic, but I just saw the pictures of the military drills in anticipation of the Malacanang fabricated rumor no doubt that there will be a big riot when the Sandigangbayan convicts Erap ala-Joey Marquez, who was convicted for tricking the government to pay 15 pesos each for the 11-peso walis tingtings acquired during his tenure (?) as mayor of Paranaque. Tindi rin ano?

Bobo rin ano? Don’t the idiot realize that by mobilizing the whole AFP and PNP, they are admitting that Erap is that popular that majority of Filipinos would die for him enough for the usurper to try to save her butt, and that she indeed was not elected to the position that she has usurped and stolen, and the Filipinos want her out even at the peril of their lives!

Sinusurot ng budhi ba? No, just plain and simple paranoia, no doubt! Kung ang akala nila matatakot nila ang mga pilipino with the show of those apa ammunition, manigas sila! Sabi nga, “Kapag umaapaw, kinakalos!”

  59. parasabayan parasabayan

Off Topic: Just read Dolorfino’s( the new Marine Commandant) message to the detained Marine Officers. He said “come home” ,to where? He also said to leave the elected representatives in changing the system. That is if these elected officials are legitimately elected. He continued to say that the marines sould be apolitical. Heh,heh, heh…is he kidding or what? These marines were widely used in cheating for the tiyanak and worse, all the AFP high ranking officials were used in the cheating operations. Now these tiyanak officials want to come clean? Come on, be real! No wonder the “tell that to the marines” phrase is so much in vougue these days!

Another off topic: Nanginginig daw ang tuhod ni Gunggongzales so he is taking a month off. I do not like to make fun of him now that he is really “very” sick but it is about time he stops raping our system! God has His ways of stopping the evil! If the tiyanak can’t stop her appointed henchmen( for reasons she only knows-these men know too much of her ill doings) God does it for her. This is what most of us were praying for. Let us continue to pray.

Hanep na Dolorfino! “Come home where?” To Gloria, where else. He just admitted that his fake commander-in-chief is isolated from “her” soldiers!

If Gloria cared for the soldiers, she would have let the Makati court ruled on merits the Trillanes appeal to let him work for the sakes of the people and “her” soldiers, and order the unconditional release of the “men of honor”.

The soldiers are battling Gloria’s phantom enemies.

    PSB n’ Cocoy,

I don’t want him dead, I want his illness eats his evil brain and body little by little and each night suffers nightmares of his sins against the country and pinoys. That’s hell of a living dead!

Diego;“Imagine claiming economic progress when the Philippines cannot even produce food for its own people”

The reality is; Her inexcellency love her people, she doesn’t want them to till the soil and even plant camote. That is not her economic policy, she want all the able bodied to leave the country and seek employment anywhere in the globe. She valued the dollar more than the picture of Ninoy in the Philippine currency. In fact; even those WWII veterans she doesn’t want them to come home and die in their native land which they deliriously fought against the troops of The Tiger of Malaya.

She is different from Quezon who was too nationalistic, she is sadistic and she loves to see our super maids being raped, abused and mistreated. She encouraged them to filed a complaints against their employer so that her consul can have contingency on the settlement and she has a percentage more than the victims.

It is unwise for her to let the people till the soil, Garci’s niece at SBMA could not have a tong collection from the double dead meat and vegetables in a hundred containers coming in. If she let the people to till, those OFW’s remittance will be a savings, and the prices of food commodities is cheap and sometimes it is free, none of the dependent will spent some cash on pound by pound basis. Do you have any idea how many tons of food will perish if there is no buyers? Hehehehe!

    Chi;
You want him to be dependent on Morphine instead of Vicodine,he’ll be a drug addict and in the process of getting the Devil’s fork tattoo on his bare chest and pierce his left and right ears for a diamond earrings.Hehehehe!

    Chi,
Tama ka, Parehong mahilig sa dugo. The only difference Tarantino does it in his films for entertainment, while gloria does it in real life at marami na siyang biktima.

  66. rose rose

I too, will pray for siraulo for God to allow him to rest..
in peace..hirap na hirap na ang mga tao, hirap na hirap na rin siya seguro..I firmly believe that God in all His mercy and love will give us the time to say “sorry” for all our sins..either marami siyang kasalanan na kailangan niya ang mahabang panahon na pagsisisihan…or talagang ayaw niya magsorry..ano kaya?

  67. rose rose

Tongue: mukhang malasa yong Liver ala Gloria..paki marinate ng husto sa cognac and grill it well in a fire like that in hell.. cremated..kasi pihado ko toxic ang liver niya..

Hopefully, pag namatay iyan no one in his right frame of mind will erect a monument for this guy even in his home province.

  72. I just made inquiries for ordering the cookbook from Anvi and/or National Book Store. I am presently waiting for the answer and confirmation of my order since the book is not stil online as it seems.

Will post here their reply when I receive one so that it will be easier for those interested to order for the “Pulutan!” online.

  73. Emil:

  74. Yes, the book is not yet online because it just came out last Wednesday.

We are glad it was able to make it to the Manila International Book Fair. All the copies printed so far are at the book fair.
We are also happy that it is selling well.

After the book fair, the book will be available at the National Book Store and Power Books.

  75. Mrivera Mrivera

“Hopefully, pag namatay iyan no one in his right frame of mind will erect a monument for this guy even in his home province.”

  76. Ellen,

Have just asked my sis in Manila to procure a copy for me. Wala akong Pinoy cook book so good thing to have one now.

  77. Thanks, Anna. If you are not in a hurry, you can wait for it to be available at the National Book Store.

    Rose,

I believe that God gives us all the time we need to say sorry for our sins. Pero gagawin kaya iyan ng tapat ng mga tulad ni Gunggong who think of themselves as gods with small g!

  79. chi chi

    Mrivera,

“Pulutan: From the Soldiers’ Kitchen” will sure become a bestseller for a long long time! Best gift for the commander-in-thief gluerilla and Ass!

  81. Mrivera Mrivera

chi, tama ka. let this cookbook be the passport of the glued and the ass to their journey to mental asylum where they can continue implementing their crazy greed.

  83. florry florry

I hope “Pulutan” will be available at the National Book Store by the second week of this month. My brother is on a Philippine holiday and I asked him to buy even just 3 copies. One for me and and the other two for birthday gifts to my friends who are celebrating at the end of this month.

  84. rose rose

Mrivera: wala naman segurong sira ulo sa Iloilo who will have a monument erected for him. Unless yong senadora na taga roon din, o kaya ang mga anak niya..pero huwag naman sa public place like a plaza..etc. doon nalang sa poultry at piggery farm nila..

  85. parasabayan parasabayan

Kasi sa amin kalag means ghosts or skeletons..kaya we refer to Halloween as kalag-kalag. Sayang hindi totoo ang unang basa ko.

  87. rose rose

Tama- GMA and her party should be in a mental asylum..at doon puede niyang sabihin..I am the president. I could be as strong as I want. I have a country to run..and marami ang papalakpak..

  88. Rose: doon nalang sa poultry at piggery farm nila..

    ******

    Hi.

Read the Inquirer earlier and saw the news about the book. Sana by the time I drop by in a bookstore andun na siya. Im really looking forward to read it.

  90. Anvil said “Pulutan- from the soldiers’ kitchen” will be available at National Book Store and Powerbooks next week.

For those who are abroad, they suggest to ask friends who are coming here to buy for you. They said it’s expensive for them to send it by mail.

Better yet, kayo na ang mag-dealer. Get books by bulk from Anvil at a discounted price and sell them there. Contact Gwenn Galvez. E-mail:gewnn.galvez@anvilpublishing.com

  91. Thanks, Ellen. I was thinking of buying in bulk since I am opening a store, and will include Philippine books as one of my items for sales. Will write to her although I have actually written their marketing already.

  92. Anvil said “Pulutan- from the soldiers’ kitchen” will be available at national book stores starting Tuesday.

  93. Emilio_OFW Emilio_OFW

    Yuko,

may kasabihan na “figures don’t lie but liars can figure.”
totoo sa economic growth figures ni Gloria.

  96. chi chi

    Rose,

He was transferred to Ched even if not qualified because he questioned that broadband project.
