Convenient diversion

I perfectly understand the outrage of Filipino-Americans over the racist quote of the character of Susan Mayer (played by the lovely Teri Hatcher) in the hit series in the United States, “Desperate Housewives”.

In the premiere episode of its fourth season aired last week, Mayer asked for the credentials of the gynecologist who examined her and told her that she was approaching menopause. She said, “Can I check those diplomas ‘coz I just want to make sure that they’re not from some med school in the Philippines.”

Filipino-Americans are up in arms against the blockbuster soap opera. The online message board of Desperate Housewives is dominated by comments from angry Filipino-Americans. The Philippine Consulate in New York said they have written the show’s producer objecting to the “racist slur”. And Malacañang has joined the fray. No less than Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita urged civil society groups in the Philippines and the US to protest the insult.

I’m all for doctors and other health workers in the U.S. protesting over the insult but Ermita? The reason why we are being viewed as cheats by the whole world because we have a cheat sitting in Malacañang. And Ermita is part of the cabal that perpetuates the regime of cheating in the country.

I guess the “Desperate Housewives” scriptwriter must have read about the leak in the June 2006 board exams for nurses and how the government at first tried to gloss over it. And why would Gloria Arroyo be strict about cheating in board exams when she herself is the number one cheat?

A regular discussant in my blog, Anna who is based in Brussels, see Ermita’s entry into the Desperate Housewives furor as a classic diversionary tactic in war. “Ayan na!,” she said. “ Filipinos will be galvanized by the powers that be at home against another target, a foreign target to forget the more delicate issue of the NBN scam.”

Anna said she would like “our friends in the US to do the same thing about the NBN corruption deal — I wanna see them in same fighting mood! Then I will believe they are patriots, otherwise, no dice! (They’re merely feeling slighted coz their lil amor propio has been a lil brusied…)”

I agree. Many middle-class Filipinos in the country and abroad find it convenient to tolerate Gloria Arroyo’s fake presidency believing that they are not affected by it. The Desperate Housewives incident proves the overwhelming extent of the disrepute that Arroyo has brought to the Filipino nation.

* * *

The National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) in the U.S. issued a statement
Expressing “outrage and offense” over the racist quote uttered by actress Teri Hatcher in “Desperate Housewives”.

“These types of derogatory remarks are obviously upsetting because Filipino nurses and doctors are imported to the US out of this country’s grave need for quality healthcare professionals. Our community is at the backbone of the US healthcare system,” states NAFCON spokesperson Rico Foz.

NAFCON have been actively spearheading for the past 6 months a heated international campaign for the Sentosa 27++ nurses, healthcare professionals from the Philippines recruited by the fraudulent Sentosa Recruitment Agency under false contracts. The nurses also suffered backwages and other exploitative measures by the Sentosa management.

“We are proud of our Filipino nurses and other healthcare professionals. It is no secret that our country’s healthcare professionals are the best in the world. Often times, it is their employers here in the US, not foreign nurses, that bring down the quality of healthcare in this country,” Foz added, citing Sentosa’s imposition of a steep 60:1 patient to nurse ratio in Sentosa facilities.

“We demand an apology from ABC, the producers and writers of Desperate Housewives, whom we are certain have been serviced by quality Filipino nurses and doctors,” Foz said.

My suspicious mind even tells me that this Teri Hatcher could be a good friend of RP’s fake president. It was to divert the people’s attention from the tons of corruption cases under this evil GMA regime. Please forgive me for thinking that way.
Outwardly, Malacanang is upset but deep inside the Palace, they are all happy. Fake credentials in a country run by a fake president…sometimes, we can’t blame these foreigners. Peke kasi lahat mula sa Pangulo.

If Terry Hatcher said that, I’ll make her honorary Filipino.

Ayan, right at this very minute, CNN headlines the Philippine government asking ABC executives for an apology for the ‘slur’ at Desperate Housewife soap.

  10. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

Chi, “Sikat na naman ang Pinas for the wrong reason..” You’re right. What Malacanang is doing further justifies why others should look down on Filipinos. Has the US govt done that when our movie personalities satirize or racialize Americans? Makes me think Malacanang hunchos are just trying to deflect public attention away from the nefarious deals they have entered.

During his early years of governance, RP ranked among the top in Asia economically. Many might not like Marcos, but many foreigners admired him.

I knew a couple, both physicians in Pinas, who applied for nursing jobs in NY after they completed some courses required. I asked them why?

I also knew an ex-VP sa Development Bank of the Philippines, who after attending a couple for Christ conference, didn’t go back to Pinas (Wala kahit isa sa participants ang bumalik). She’s working in NY as domestic helper for 5 years na, ang sweldo ay mas malaki kesa sa mga pinoy computer engineers.

If so, Luzviminda, baka may dahilan. My aunt was almost a victim of negligence of some doctor from the Philippines in the Seton Hospital in Daly City. He could not wait for my aunt to die. My cousin refused to have her mother subjected to such mercy killing. I bet you will feel the same sans some slur on the integrity of Filipino doctors and nurses cheapen especially by this regime.

  20. As I have stated in another loop, it is something that needs to be exposed and properly addressed likewise even in the USA.

Of course it will be news to all the rival networks, but for a CNN announcer to say that baka magprotest na naman iyong mga Fil-Ams na sipsip sa mag-asawang binaboy ng husto ang mga pilipino!

  24. luzviminda luzviminda

Gloria has put our country’s image in SHAME!!!

  25. You bet, Luzviminda. Nabalita iyan sa USA. Of course, may dahilan na maalarma sila.

This reminds me of a Filipino now in a Japanese prison serving a sentence (15 years) for malpractice leading to death. The victim was another Filipino. This guy was calling himself a doctor, and was showing a diploma to prove so, and was doing plastic surgery to Filipinos in Japan, and getting big fees from them.

The victim wanted to have a firm up of her breasts, etc. and this guy did an operation on her. She died when she was injected the preliminary anaesthesia. What this guy did not know was the girl had suffered from some kind of epilepsy. Namatay!

There are just too many of such negligence pero sa Pilipinas nakakalusot iyan lalo na kung ang victim walang pera. Iyong writer must have heard of such and wrote it in protest against such neglect. Dapat lang namang ma-expose. Dapat iyong mga kalokohan ang pino-protestahan ng mga pilipino sa Tate not something that needs to be exposed and stopped by all means!!! I can understand, though, the effect of such statement on the rest of the doctors of Filipino race!!!

  26. On the other hand, baka iyong script writer narinig si Taratitat speak of the Filipinos she has been tickling with her lies that they are the heroes and heroines who have helped bouyed up Philippine economy with their remittances regardless of whether or not they are in fact being a burden to the host country where a lot many of them are staying and working illegally. Nakakapika nga naman iyan especially when they have become more as liabilities than assets to the host country.

Filipinos should be allowed to stay or leave the Philippines without this regime making money out of them. A friend of mine in fact feels pestered being asked to pay some fees kasi OFW daw siya even when he does not consider himself as one komo nagtratrabaho siya sa Japan. Now, he asks me how he can be a Japanese citizen. Sabi ko sa kaniya, if he cannot participate fully by not being able to vote because he cannot read and write Japanese, huwag na lang.

Ano ba????

  28. Etnad Etnad

Convenient diversion talaga, Ellen. I share Anna’s views that Fil-Ams should rather redirect their indignation from trivial matters such as this innocent attempt at humor gone awry, to more important, damaging issues that affect every Filipino life, back home.

If you noticed, I intentionally avoided sharing my mind to extend that thread any longer, not that I do not at all feel slighted by such discriminatory language, but because it is not in the same context that it should be viewed, in my own opinion, such as this one.

I’d rather that I, and all other patriotic Filipinos whether here or abroad, focus their energies in the fight for truth and justice, and not play right into the dirty spins of this deadly criminal syndicate calling itself government, which by its cheating ways brought upon us this shameful prejudice we now reap.

I vomit at the temerity to use the issue to further camouflage and muddle probably the biggest scandal we will ever see in our lives, just so this mini-dictator’s survives for another day.

Exactly the point of my own tirades against this protest instigated by Malacanang, and when the supposed “slur” is more an expose than what these creeps want to make of it to deviate attention of Filipinos to the real issues that should be addressed and if possible bring to justice.

I understand that in a matter of a day or two 180187 or more Filipinos daw have signed up the Malacanang instigated petition. Bakit hindi magawa iyan on other issues. Iyon ngang Sentosa nurses petition hindi makakuha ng ganyang kadaming signatories even when it is more a valid cause.

Desperate Housewife, one of my favorite show, simply because of Teri Hatcher. It was a joke. I asked my wife and her frriends reactions (all nurses here in NY) about their reactions, and they all said, no big deal. That was their reaction because they know who they are and what they are capable of doing. Filipino nurses literally runs the major hospitals in NY, from Montefiore, Bellevue, Mt Sinai, Columbia Presbyterian, St. Claares they are competent and they know it.

  42. Totie Totie

    Some Negatives:

    1) Misdiagnosis: my friend’s wife was going to this Filipina Doctor in NY, she was told that she has cancer and of course human nature you will be scared to death. Guess what? Flip Flop test results with another Pinay patient. Not even a freakin apology was extended. Hindi naman lahat, pero maraming ganitong cases

    2) Try to go to a Pinoy medical office na hindi ka naka bihis ng maayos and you can experience something. I did my own test and lo and behold, now there are at least ten families that went with us to a Jewish doctor. We are all happy, not that I am saying our Pinoy Drs. are not good, a lot, I mean a lot are top dogs in the hospitals all over USA.

Ang Desperate Housewife mukhang no big deal dito sa British Columbia Canada. Marami ang ingit sa Pinoy. Ito isang sample lang. In early 90s, ang Canada Post Corporation, ang hourly salary was $16-18. Ang minimum wage was $6-7/hour. Ang Canada Post gumawa ng para-an ang hiring ida-an sa verbal and written exams. Maniwala kayo, after two years, ang Post Office parang Divisoria na sa daming Pinoy pumasa sa exam at na i-employ. Ang Desperate Housewife case isang para-an makapasok din ang ibang lahi other than Pinoy. Dont like the Teri Hatcher slurs, too bad! I’ve never thought of being disrespectful to our own people before, but now I go for it. Don’t like the slurs then get the hell out of America. I’m sure the situation will continue to get worse until these freakin unioned skinned freeloaders are back in their own country !!!!!!!

Well, well, well, pinoy situations in the eye of Americans are all bunch of criminals, they come to America and they don’t want to leave especially those TNT’s. Think! How many TNT are living now in America from our country? They are all here hustling and busting on under the table low wages, sometimes their own employers are a fellow Filipino. In health care, some Filipinos are milking the Medicare, They open a nursing home, get some Alzheimer patience from the hospital and they hire TNT’s pinoy to take care of them even they don’t have any certification in home care.
Racket, Why? Because first of all the owner of the nursing home violated the labor law on wage and Hour regulation. The employer don’t pay income tax and social security for their TNT employee. The local nursing graduate in America could not get a job because these nursing home owner are looking for a cheap labor. My wife is a nurse graduate here, she had a hard time finding a job in the first time because it was taken by a nurse from foreign country in cheap salary. The owner of the hospital can cover 3 nurses salary compare to my wife salary on a prevailing wage. This is the reason Americans are not into a medical professions because they don’t want to compete in a lower salary from foreigners who come to America.Cheap labor is degrading the health care.

You are right there, Ellen. The “indignation” of Malacanang over the comments in Desperate Housewives is obviously insincere and clearly a diversionary ploy.

I lawyered for the examinees and nursing leaders who exposed the leakage. Malacanang mishandled the entire affair. The leakage was initially a problem that could be solved by a speedy investigation and punishment of the guilty. But the government precipitately denied the leakage, ignoring the complaint. The shocked complainants battled with the government. The problem became a national scandal. The Unelected President was asked to exercise her (de facto) powers over PRC. She refused to move. She let the stakeholders quarrel until the national scandal spiralled into an international event. The she barked her “No retake!” order. Half of the crowd cheered; half of the crowd jeered. In the blink of an eye, she barked, “Retake!” Half of the crowd cheered; half of the crowd jeered. What was her way out of the messy situation? “I leave the Court of Appeals to decide.”
(Is this not like how she dealt with the ZTE scandal? “The contract must be honored in spite of media attacks!” Later on: “The government will withdraw from the deal!” In the nursing case, the CA was her anointed sacrificial lamb. In the ZTE, it was Abalos.

I know where Desperate Housewives got the idea – from Malacañang.

To whom should we direct our legitimate indignation? Desperate Housewives? It had basis in the impression created by Malacanang.

Malacanang has no business asking ABC to apologize. Instead, it should apologize to the Filipinos for creating a bad image for us.

Doctors always treat issues like that with extreme cautiton, because its is a matter of life and death. As far as I know, you can’t practice your medical proffession in US unless you pass the board exam as a doctor there! I have friends who are working as doctors in several states and their experiences aren’t privy to me! Fact is, I called a friend in NJ the other day and she just laughed off the said episode!
And what for?

Bottomline is Philippines is being perceived as a country of not only corrupts but cheats lead by the number one cheat gloria. It’s a natural feeling to get hurt whenever one gets slurred or humiliated, but, in this case, for me it’s not a big deal. All over the world cheating in the Philippines is a well-known fact. The apology of the producers means nothing, ano, sinaksak ka na tapos gagaling ka ba sa sorry? It’s only for public consumption, and in fact and in truth the perception about the country is still there, and nobody could blame them, the glaring proof for everybody to see is still there: gloria the cheat is still sitting on her stolen throne.

cvj, this is not the first time, 4 or 5 instances way back, Ellen’s blog was attacked exactly the same way. the current blue backdrop, without warning took over my screen around 9:30 am (manila time ), 2007/10/05.

Totie, interesting insights you’ve got there, re: Marcos rule. i find it rather strange Pinoy middle class 20-year old fixation on Marcos—–solely blaming him for the mess and conveniently, excepting themselves in the process. cvj , and many others may not agree with me on this, but methinks the latter betrayed the country as well by keeping mum on all the heart-breaking events after Edsa 1, starting with the carnage in Mendiola that left 23 farmers and students killed in 1987 (prompting Pepe Diokno to resign from his government posts).

Whaddyah know, I am DOM, doctor of madicine. I cannot grasp whats the fuss is all about. I went on to study the desperate apology and I don’t see why we cant accept it. Its even unnecessary. Its better though than try to engage further anyone with implied monetary renumerations. That’s fleecing, or better understood as the other end of corruption where we are better known of universally. Apostol and Ermita I am sure could easily take Teri Hatcher off the hook in the first place for she did not generalize all the doctors who graduated in the Philippines. The slur only defined some from med school we know to well that diplomated many at the Recto university belt. Its caveat emptor for Teri to know what brand and expiry dates of the goods she’d take. DTI espouses that. But of course that’s a very good advertisement taking place now selling our very good doctors whose alma mater did not include the Recto University.

  66. Is there a fuss? Agree, we should now leave it at that. Fil Ams got their apology. Govt, DFA, Ermita should now back off and concentrate on the corruption charges against Gloria and her ilk.

Btw, what’s the matter with Ellen’s blog – someone in ISAFP, in Malacanang, Esperon perhaps getting really scared of Ellen and are now trying to intimidate her by fucking up the blogsite? Geez, these retards ought to take their fight in Mindanao where their efforts are much needed. Why don’t they frigging just go do the job they have been sworn to do?

The global Filipino indignation and outrage about “Desperate Housewives” is a little sad, Firstly, because this is, after all, just a silly sitcom – it’s not like we were insulted in 60 minutes, or 20/20 or by Barbara Waters or Tom Brokaw. It was a fictitious character and it was Teri Hatcher – it would have really broken my heart if it were Angelina Jolie.

Racial stereotyping on US television goes on all the time – Mexicans, Italians, the Irish, blacks, whites, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Arabs, even Klingons and Vulcans all get their share – just watch Comedy Central, and the most vicious insults come from their own, just watch a single episode of Mind of Mencia.

Secondly, there are far more important things to spend our pent up energy and fury on. For Christ’s sake, there are many Filipinas on death row in Middle Easten countries, Pinay housemaids being abused in Hong Kong, Pinoy contract workers kidnapped in Nigeria, greed and corruption in the highest levels of Philippine government, systematic assassination of Filipino journalists and activists and we raise this great hue and cry about a comedy on some scheming and unfaithful housewives? What are our priorities as a people?

This is not to condone the inappropriate reference to Philippine med schools (I signed the petition) but let’s all lighten up and not give the TV producers the benefit of even more attention and popularity. Filipinos are well-regarded for their professionalism, not just as physicians but as nurses, engineers, realtors, bankers, caregivers, teachers and many others and a few seconds in a comedy show will not take that away from us. Filipinos are also well-known for their sense of humor. Let us not lose that positive reputation also by beating this issue to death, by being strident, angry and unforgiving.

  76. Agree! “Let us not lose that positive reputation also by beating this issue to death, by being strident, angry and unforgiving.”

  77. We are here in the US. We feel the heat. Of course, I don’t expect everyone to understand us and feel for us. One surely have a different opinion if you’re from the outside looking in than from where you are smack in the middle of it and worst if you’re part of it. So, I’d say to the ones who can’t feel us:

“CAN I CHECK YOUR RESUME AND PASSPORT, PLEASE? I JUST WANNA MAKE SURE THAT YOU ACTUALLY STAYED IN AMERICA LONG ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE WHAT WE FILIPINO-AMERICANS HAVE EXPERIENCED”

  78. chi chi

But this happened after I got 3 virus warnings.

  79. Re “CAN I CHECK YOUR RESUME AND PASSPORT, PLEASE? I JUST WANNA MAKE SURE THAT YOU ACTUALLY STAYED IN AMERICA LONG ENOUGH TO EXPERIENCE WHAT WE FILIPINO-AMERICANS HAVE EXPERIENCED”

As far as I’m concerned, I think I stayed in America long enough but did not experience the slur against Philippine medical schools, besides am not in medical field.

Meanwhile, just so we could get this in the right persepective:

I believe the beef here is more of resentment that Fil Ams could move in one direction like that, united when there’s that kind of slur, all in their honour I’d say, but the resentment actually is more why can’t they do the same when a corruption scandal as exciting as the NBN arises? What happened there in that soap a product of corruption in Pinas so there is a school of thought that it would be excellent if the same Fil-Ams could join the citizenry around the globe in denouncing the corruption, on which certainly that comment was based, that’s being perpetuated by the ZTE-NBN corruptors in Manila.

  80. chi chi

Re: Malacanang has no business asking ABC to apologize. Instead, it should apologize to the Filipinos for creating a bad image for us.

Right, but we’re asking for the moon from the illegitimates!

  81. Tell you what! In one of the old but limited TV series in the UK (can’t remember which one anymore), one of the lines was about a girl who was asked to go to an all boy school being “great”… the reply from the school prefect (senior student): “Of course! She’s a Filipina prostitute!” or something like that.

That is also the image of many unenlightened Westerners about Pinays. I think if ever, this is the real racial slur!

  82. “but did not experience the slur against Philippine medical schools, besides am not in medical field. ”

You don’t have to be in the medical field to feel how we Filipino-Americans feel when those words are utterred in the tube. Have you worked in America and experienced how it is working in a multi-cultural environment? Do you actually understand the mentality of some of these people? Some Americans are nice but some of them could be truly nasty. Desperate Housewives here is like a religion. It’s a water cooler conversation and a party on Sundays. Some Americans actually believe what they see and what they hear on TV. Before I wrote about the Desperate Housewives, 2 days earlier, my niece went home angry because her American classmates told her that Filipinos in Manila live in boxes and cartons. Sure, they’re kids and kids are nasty.

Forget the political swipes because our anger is valid. Point is – most Filipinos and filipino bloggers who were against us and castigated our anger to the scriptwriters idiotic mantra are the ones who’s got them wrong.

  83. CVJ:

Me, too, nadali. May pumasok sa isang computer ko when I tried to blog in at Ellen’s this morning. Naglinis tuloy ako ng computer ko. I’m using another computer now kasi still cleaning pa ang nadaling computer ko.

Tindi ng mga katulong ni Taratitat! Balik na kasi iyong pinakaamo.

BTW, I like the comment of cheryl: “Malacanang has no business asking ABC to apologize. Instead, it should apologize to the Filipinos for creating a bad image for us.” OK na OK!

  84. Reyna Elena,

Must confess never got to work in the US – went to Europe right away in my teens. I believe you. If it’s any comfort to you, I punched an American consul at a party that became a cause celebre long time ago because he was saying something I didn’t like about Pinays.

Europe has the same thing though must say when my colleagues start mouthing slurs (not specifically against me) be it on anyone, Moroccans, Blacks, Turks, Chinese, etc within my hearing – I hit back right away and once threw a shoe on the head of one of the engineers in my office because he said something nasty about his secretary who was a Vietnamese.

  85. Anna:

I commented on the image of Filipinas worldwide now in another loop. Just type Filipina in any of the search engines (Google, etc) and you get so many links to pornographic sites. Now, whose fault is that?

In fact, today, I went to visit a Filipina in detention with a lawyer. She was caught in a bar with about 10 Filipinas who came here 3 months ago as tourists but have been recruited to work in a bar despite the restriction. And boy, were they carrying some blue book which is a requirement to go out of the Philippines as bar girls. Ang tigas talaga ng ulo!

  86. AdeBrux,

Thank you. I’m no stranger to Europe or Europeans either, went briefly at Central European Univ in Budapest and made lots of friends. And if you were in there (Europe) – then, you’re lucky because Europeans are far more tolerant than the people you encounter here. My reaction (which is why i frequent this blog as a lurker) is similar.

    Ciao! Off to the ranch!

  87. Point is this government has been exporting Filipinos overseas to be slaved. When we went to the US, madali pang makapunta ng America ang mga doctor especially if they have the proper recommendation based on their expertise. I should know. One of my uncles was immediately hired in some special hospital in Lousiana for being a good skin specialist.

Nakakaawa!

  89. Yuko,

Ako naman iba “Sabi ko, “Sorry, I don’t know anybody” kahit na marami akong name-meet na mga katulong na pilipino dito. ”

Even if I don’t know of any Pinoy domestic helpers personally, I always give the phone number of the Filipino chaplain here because I realize these people, the Pinoys here don’t all have jobs and they need a bit of help. Nothing to do with abetting Gloria.

  90. ystakei,

“Point is this government has been exporting Filipinos overseas to be slaved.” I wrote about this. Here’s the link: http://reynaelena.com/2007/10/01/its-the-economy-stupid/

    Because of this:

“The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is urging elementary pupils to consider taking up nursing in college because the demand for nurses abroad is expected to rise until 2020, ABS-CBN News reported Tuesday.”

  91. chi chi

    Yuko,

    DP,

  94. When the Fil Chaplain here tells me that thanks to my giving his phone numbers, he’s been able to point inquiries to those Pinoys and Pinays who have no jobs, I’m happy already.

Filipino Doctors in U.S. can take care of themselves and can fight their battles. It may hurt even as ABC and the character of the Drama have apologized already, but let’s go beyond the surface and look for the reasons why such slurs and discriminatory words were uttered towards our medical schools. Is there truth to the slur? We could deny it, but we know for facts, that not only Medical Diplomas and transcript of records are manufactured by scams, but there were also rumours that some institutions will provide papers for anyone for “a price” for other professions. with conspiracy with school officials, verification of papers can be authenticated when check by professional bodies abroad for authenticity.

And it is not only true to the Philippines. Many countries also do the same. And even private specialties schools here will issue students a legal school certificates without earning for them for a price…But these are the matter for the Regulating Bodies and the Police (for frauds) to look after and to use it as a vehicle to promote a t.v. show is not only in bad taste, but could tantamount to promoting Hatred towards a segment, or nationals and ethnicity… and that is in violation of Equality rights, that no individual is subject to discrimination in regards to race, colour, and more…..

Ayan si Gloria, begging India for cheap drugs. ‘Yan ba ngayong ang puntirya niyang legacy?! This lukaret is running after China and India for more kurakot. Who would have thought that one day we’d see a Pinas president (kahit peke pa) going all the way to India to beg for projects (naglakwatsa lang ang lintek sa totoo lang!)? 107. Walang masama, Chi, but there are a lot many alternative jobs out there. Reminds me of the many cases of rapes, murders, etc. of maids for instance in Lebanon, etc. Nagreklamo ba ang mga ungas?

Golly, iyong na-interview domestic helpers nga for a documentary on Filipino workers that we made in spring, hindi na nahihiyang sinabing na-rape sila ng mga amo nila kasi common na sa kanila ang magkaganoon. O bakit hindi iyan nireklamo ni unano? Kaya para sa akin, itong Malacanang instigated protest is an attempt to deviate attention to the more serious and graver issues involving her, her husband, et al. Bakit hindi iyan ang i-protesta ng mga pilipino especially when this is not the first time that they are discriminated, etc. in the USA.

chi, the president of our town association, now retired but still employed with the Province Hydro, didn’t finish his engineering studies, but upon offered by the Hydro to go for company program for Nuclear Power Plant training, has to produce papers authenticated by a prestigious engineering school that he was the graduate of that particular school. He completed his training, worked for the Hydro for more than 20 years as power plant engineer, retired three years ago and was rehired. (we don’t have compulsory retirement in ontario). Now he can afford a caregiver for his wife, more of a companion. and honestly I believe he is smart or even smarter than the Actual Graduates of that country foremost Engineering school. and that was about more than 20 years ago…

SEVEN SOCIAL SINS. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (L) poses with officials after receiving a scroll listing “Seven Social Sins” as proclaimed by Mahatma Gandhi…

    Hahahahahah!

Quoted by Mahatma Gandhi in “Young India”, 1925

    1)Politics without principles

    2)Wealth without work

    3)Pleasure without conscience

    4)Knowledge without character

    5)Commerce without morality

    Yuko,

  116. pechanco pechanco

A bit off topic: Hear what Mike Arroyo said as he’s about to be called to the Senate hearing on ZTE deal after the recess.
He said he needs to check it first with his doctor if he could attend the hearing. kararating lang niya ng matagal sa biyahe abroad, hindi niya kayang mag-attend ng hearing? He will fake illness again to avoid the hearing. Hindi na kasi mabenta iyong “invoking right to privacy” niya. Tanga niya!

  117. chi chi

Hahahaah! Anna, nakakatuwa ang mga Indians.

  118. Nasampal si Gloria but discreetly by the Indians particularly with at least 6 sampals to wit:

1)Politics without principles (Politics WITH principles? Never heard according to her)

2)Wealth without work (Gloria became filthy rich thanks to the Pinedas jueteng contributions to her personal kitty, etc., Mike Arroyo was not a CASH rich guy until he became Ipdye!)

3)Pleasure without conscience (Di ba sabi niya she has plenty of sex?)

4)Knowledge without character (She keeps talking about democracy and blah blah blah but she’s the prime promoter of extra-judicial killings)

5)Commerce without morality (IMPSA deal, NBN-ZTE and lots of smuggling)

    6) (well don’t know unless she dabbles in Scientology)

7))Worship without sacrifice (She will say, “Why should I? God speaks to me directly!)

  119. Yuko,

Re: “Walang masama, Chi, but there are a lot many alternative jobs out there. Hindi kailangan i-degrade ang sarili sa totoo lang. Kasi parang walang alam ang mga pilipino kundi magpa-alila.”

Agree ako na maraming alternative jobs out there but most of the time even if Filipinos are qualified for the job that’s on offer, they cannot obtain it for want of permit for instance. So, what can they do if they are illegally working in Europe, they cannot go hungry either so they accept menial jobs. Nothing wrong with cleaning houses and get paid, better than being prositutes.

  120. “Kasi parang walang alam ang mga pilipino kundi magpa-alila.”

I don’t think that’s quite true or is a generalized truth.

Again, I’m sure many Filipinos would rather do other jobs than cleaning houses and other people’s toilettes but again, in Europe, immigration rules are getting tight, you have no legal permit to work, you can’t be employed for a job even if you may qualify because you have the skills because companies cannot hire people who have no legal papers.

  121. I know a few Pinoy guys here who are IT engineers but can’t be hired because they don’t have legal permit to stay or to work.

I even once suggested to my husband if his office could accept the application of a guy I know but nothing doing even if my husband is the big boss. My husband’s company would be violating laws here if they did that.

And because he was really desperate (and couldn’t leave the country because he knows he would never be allowed to enter again, he’ll be placed on the black list) so he was forced to accept a gardener’s job in the Montessori school where my son first went when we first arrived here in the middle of Winter. Ayun happy siya and he helps with the IT work pa in that Montessori school although still illegal siya. He’s earning more than 1,200 Euros a month plus free boarding in the school.

    Anna,

As I said in a previous post, an ex-VP of DBP in Pinas now works as undocumented domestic helper in NY. She tried for many years to acquire legal papers but to no avail. Even without papers, masaya siya sa trabaho and earns more than the DBP president kung legal at peso lang ang pag-uusapan. Bakit siya babalik sa Pinas while being an honest official there is not a guarantee of a good life, she said.

And just when the heat on Desperate Housewives went past the peak and has toned down, Comedy Central comes out with its own: Showing Cory Aquino’s picture alongside, Indira, Thatcher (was it?) and another woman leader. Cory’s picture however had the caption “Slut” handwritten in fluorescent yellow. It’s on the late news.

Here we go again. Fil-Ams, what will you do now? Start another petition? Chain Email? Tomorrow, it’s gonna be Jay Leno. Next, Rosie O’Donell. And then, Howard Stern. then Conan, and Jon, and…

Yeah, Teri definitely hurt many egos bigtime. 2% of America is Filipino. In a few days, the Filipino Community, clogged the servers’ bandwidths viewing YouTube, forwarding emails, signing petitions, updating blogs, etc.

Halfway around the globe, unhyphenated Filipinos were sending text, “Putang ina si Neri, bakla kasi”. His actions hurt more than 80 Million Filipinos. 96% of the Philippines IS Filipino.

Never heard ang Gloria Arroyo in many many parts of ‘merika.

Sample, last week hubby and I attended a university party. I was asked by an Am professor “Is President Cory Aquino doing fine?”. Totoo yan.

  130. Hahahahah! I know Chi! Happened to me in Paris. But much earlier. When I told him I was from Pinas even if I was American, sabi ba naman … “We still own Pinas, don’t we?”

Pardon my ignorance, but what’s the difference between “slur” and “slut”? Ngayon naman, may isang US daily show ang tinawag si Cory na “slut”. Nakikisawsaw na naman ang mga dugong dilaw.

Don’t be surprised, ladies. I’ve met a lot of Americans, including so-called Fil-Ams, who still proudly say “P.I.” or “Philippino” whenever they mean Philippines or its nationals. And they will impress you about it as a territorial possession.

    Ignorance is bliss?

  137. Pechanco,

Am not sure if the Youtube owner is a Pinoy, but I noticed that the commentators are mostly Pinoys. Reading through the arguments, I feel sad about how divided Filipinos can be. If Filipinos are indignant over Cory labeled as a “slut,” the Britons should show more anger for Thatcher being portrayed indecently.

  146. Hi guys!

There’s a list of things that people can do to help the Burmese people on http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/index.php?storyID=9004

OK, ideas really right off the bat…

It occurred to me after reading the list in The First Post that we actually could adopt the same things, tactics to bring down Esperon (well, at least we can try) so I transposed the things to do listed in The First Post on what Filipinos can do to help our incarcerated officers (if only morally):

PROTEST actions: international and local actions (am not suggesting physical rallies) to free our incarcerated officers –suggestions open, eg, wear a pin like “Free our officers” or post a page on our blog with “Mister Esperon, Free our Officers”, etc etc. to show solidarity with our incarcerated officers…

PESTER THE EMBASSY: for those who are expats, pester your Philippine Defence Attache embassy by sending e-mails or faxes calling on Mister Esperon to free incarcerated officers (give names)

TARGET GLORIA: by sending a fax or e-mail or letter to Malacanang, the DFA, DND or to the Ambassador in your region.

SIGN A PETITION: Start a petition campaign on line

SUPPORT A PRESSURE GROUP: The Senate, Congress, and human Rights Group to pressure Mr Esperon to free the incarcerated officers

KNOW YOUR ENEMY: The AFP and the DND must have websites containing reports lies (sic). See if you can hack into them (websites).

    Cheers my friends!

Nothing personal there, Reyna E. All those guys I mentioned, except for Conan, one or twice before already called us names. Never heard of the same uproar like Housewives’. I think Leno’s was about “feeding Filipino children to pedophile tourists” not sure exactly, though. Which made me sick. 153. The “some med school from Phil ” is very specific, it doesn’t say plainly as “med school from Phil”. While the scandal of the nusing board exam leakage is still fresh with us, we should not forget that some time immemorial the same scandal from Fatima College involving the physicians’ board exam leakage also happened. It is important that we never let cheat go away unpunished.

If we live in honesty and force everyone to do the same we will not face this kind of “tele-punchline”. it is not an insult, it is the truth any individual from foreign land or here most especially in the Phil that we doubt the integrity of “some” practitioner.

Two months ago RP media reported that “some” baby products from China are made of toxic materials. Chinese took this as insult, but that’s another story.

    Anna,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDHPpWnKLrc

That is racial discrimination!!

  158. Thanks, Luz!

Saw it. It was a gimmick in awfully bad taste. Don’t think the word was meant as to insult Cory per se but just a Tv gimmick turned hideous and certainly, I don’t believe it was against the Filipino people.

That’s my opinion. The woman animating the segment herself was such a whorish character so really better is to ignore it.

Iyon ngang caricature kay Thatcher mas grabe, but have we heard her reacting?

Wake-up call na ito to change the Philippine image, which BTW, my friends and I have been trying hard to change and improve since 1986, when ironically the Philippines had become known as the country where the presidents are conceived to be robbers and thieves.

  160. Racial discrimination, Luz? Mas grabe when we immigrated to the USA in the 60’s. Lumang tugtugin na iyan! I’d rather sign a petition to have theunano removed, not patronize this protest instigated by Malacanang to deviate the attention to the real issues—-rampant graft and corruption under this regime of the criminal!

  161. Sabi nga ni Tongue, are you for against Teri or Neri? I propose a petition against Neri instead!

  162. luzviminda luzviminda

    Yuko,

  163. In other words, Filipinos cannot change the image of the Philippines now with this Malacanang instigated protest kuno. OK mahirap ang buhay sa Pilipinas and these doctors now opting to be supermaids and atsoy as caregivers, etc. but do they really have to agree to be white slaved by this government, which has made human trafficking its No. 1 export industry?

Golly, this government has been fleecing Filipinos wanting to leave the Philippines because they feel they have no bright future there! Iyan ang masama at malungkot!!! Why are they not protesting strongly against this?

  164. Let’s admit it. Nababoy ang medical profession especially under this administration. Where in the world do you see doctors retraining to be nurses and attendants! Onli in da Pilipins!

Baka iyan ang binabatikos sa Desperate Housewives, the sad state of the medical profession in the Philippines, nothing racial, but something that needs to be addressed right.

I’d rather sign a petition against this regime.

  165. Well, what Yuko asks is a very legitimate question:

“Where in the world do you see doctors retraining to be nurses and attendants! Onli in da Pilipins!”

Sana kung ang nursing conversion ng mga doctors natin ay dahil sa kagustuhan nila na maging nurses and not because they are FORCED because of the economic need to convert. This must be so frustrating for our doctors who worked so hard and to find there’s nothing to look forward too in their own country – disastrous for the country, horrific brain drain!

Really, I agree with Yuko and am not surprised she’s shocked! I too am shocked.

  166. pechanco pechanco

If doctors convert to nurses, why don’t nurses convert to nursing aides? Does my question make sense?

  167. Here are the doctors/population ratio, statistics compiled by UNDP – Human Development Report 2006

    Singapore: 1990-2004 140 per 100,000 people
    Malaysia: 1990-2004 70 per 100,000 people
    Philippines: 1990-2004 58 per 100,000 people

Even Malaysia has more doctors than the Philippines, a country that’s always been considered to have a higher level of standard in the production of doctors.

We’re definitely at the tail end!

  168. GNI per capita, Atlas method – 2007 World Bank Data

    Philippines 2005: 1320 current US$
    Malaysia 2005: 4970 current US$
    Singapore 2005: 27580 current US$

  169. luzviminda luzviminda

    Pechanco,

Marami ring mga nursing graduate ng Pinas na nursing aid ang trabaho sa US habang hindi pa nakakapasa sa US State Board Exam. But once nakapasa na sila madali nang mag-apply as talagang nurse. Ganyan ang ginawa ng pinsan ko.

  170. pechanco pechanco

Thanks Luz…eh iyong nursing aides ano ang conversion nila? Ano ang mas mababa sa nursing aide?

  171. luzviminda luzviminda

    Pechanco,

Yung mga nursing aids eh nagko-convert nga as nurses. Karamihan sa kanila may ambisyon ding umasenso kaya they aspire for a higher level kaya most of them attend further schooling. Yung mas mababa sa nursing aid eh marami yan depende sa pwede mong pagtiyagaang trabaho sa US.

AdB on ratio of doctors to population:
    “Malaysia: 1990-2004 70 per 100,000 people
    Philippines: 1990-2004 58 per 100,000 people”

May be true, Malaysia has more doctors living in Malaysian soil than Filipinos staying in their homeland. That’s because the better Filipino doctors have already migrated to USA and Canada. Lots of them. In Hawaii, never met a Malaysian doctor. Filipino doctors here are not as numerous as those on the US mainland. The low proportion of Filipino doctors may have been a sad result that many of our doctors have “converted” to nurses. In fact, I know of one place where 60% of them have retrained to become nurses and many have already gone abroad as such. More proof of such loss all over the country has been reported in an international seminar.

  174. Re: “That’s because the better Filipino doctors have already migrated to USA and Canada. Lots of them.”

Oh, there’s no doubt about that.

Sad, isn’t it? The Philippines, a nation that was once second only to Japan now at the bottom of the totem pole overtaken by its neigbours which weren’t even as civilized as the Philippines once upon a time!

  175. HG,

For info, Malaysia is importing doctors, teachers, engineers, technicians, etc!

When I was living in Malaysia, in one of the newest general hospitals in KL, they have Caucasian doctors they’ve imported from the UK, under contract and from what they told me, they earned more than what they got in the UK at the time.

My driver in KL then was full Chinese and my gardener was an Indian. My maid was a Pinay of course.

  176. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

AdB, yup! those high ratios for Malaysia (also Singapore) only suggest that they have more doctors, a great number of them may have come from elsewhere. It’s the economics of demand and capacity to pay. Ours is the economics of supply, we supply the world’s need for technical labor. Thanks to our stupid government, especially GMA’s, for its short-sighted policy to make Filipinos global “servants.” You’re right, if there’s any progress the Philippines can claim, it is retrogress. It has been overtaken lately by Vietnam.

Makes me think now that the only medication is radical surgery: Ulotomy. Cut off the country’s head (GMA)! We have been diverted too much from seeing the real problem. What ails the Philippines now is that pretentious, little head (Pangulo), which takes Filipinos down the drain.

  177. pechanco pechanco

AdeBrux, you said you were once in Malaysia. Ano ang ginawa mo doon if that’s not too personal. Bilib din ako sa iyo, may driver na Chinese, gardener na Indian at Pinoy na katulong. Big time ka din kahit noon pa. I should have known you much earlier. You mentioned US doctors going abroad to work. Why? Euro money is stronger. Siguro masyadong mataas ang cost of living sa UK.

  178. Jon Stewart apologized for using the wrong picture! Hahahahaha! I like that!
