Mar vows to lead LP to victory

by Dennis Gadil

Sen. Manuel Roxas II yesterday took over the presidency
of the Liberal Party with the promise of leading the once dominant party to victory in 2010.

Roxas was overwhelmingly elected to a three-year term by the LP executive council after an hour-long, closed-door session at the Club Filipino in San Juan.

He was given “blanket authority” to appoint the party’s officers and reorganize the party starting November 30.

“We shall build a strong, united, and modern LP – rooted in its founding principles, sharpening its purpose – and lead it to victory in 2010,” Roxas, who is being groomed as LP’s standard bearer in 2010, said in his acceptance speech.
Roxas vowed to address the “assaults to our democracy and freedoms,” particularly extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances that have befallen the ranks of activists the last six years.

He compared the term of President Arroyo to the “long night of the dictator” Ferdinand Marcos.

When asked to confirm presidential plans for 2010, Roxas said: “It’s quite a ways away.”

However, Roxas said he need not wait for 2010 to start working for the country’s transformation.

Roxas delivered a message to the faction of Environment Secretary Jose “Lito” Atienza that the LP under him will not be taken hostage by the splinter group.

Atienza’s faction snubbed the LP meet. He said his faction was not invited.

But he did have a few words about Roxas’ election. He said:

“Congratulations, Sen. Roxas, at your installation as president of the Liberal Party faction led by Frank Drilon and his merry cabal of destabilizers. We were hoping we would be congratulating Mar as our president, the head of a newly-united Liberal Party, but it seems the worst fears of our group became reality after all,” referring to former Senate president and outgoing party chief Franklin Drilon.

Atienza, together with other LP stalwarts loyal to President Arroyo including former presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor, ousted Drilon’s group in a rump session in late 2005, which elected Atienza as party president.

The splintered LP took their case to the Supreme Court with Drilon’s group gaining the high court’s recognition.

Atienza is a staunch ally of President Arroyo, while Drilon has been critical of her administration since the height of the “Hello Garci” scandal in 2005.

Roxas said the party will also take it slow in exploring possible coalitions for 2010.

“What I do know is what I will do tomorrow,” he said.

Drilon said he led the LP through “interesting times,” when the political waters were “roughest…gravely threatening (the party’s) existence.”

“Today, there is no impediment to our claim that there is only one Liberal Party of the Philippines,” he said. “Under the stewardship of Sen. Mar Roxas, the Liberal Party will be the only formidable party to reckon with in 2010.”

Roxas was nominated by Sen. Benigno Aquino III, Roxas’ likely running mate in 2010.

“Senator Mar Roxas has what it takes not only to lead the LP but our country. In the Senate, we listen when he speaks – eloquent whenever he is in command of the podium, analytical when sifting through the issues that we seek to resolve and thorough in his inquisitions that clarify, rather than hinder us further from the truth,” Aquino said.

“He is an audacious intellectual with a great sense of humor, and a pre-eminent statesman who has managed to excel in the frontlines of business both here and abroad. Through his vast experience, he fared well and continues to do well as the real ‘Mr. Palengke’ – making sure that people get a fair deal, that they don’t get duped – from overpriced medicines to an overpriced broadband project,” he said.

Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca said Roxas embodies the “Liberal spirit.”

Also present during the affair were Sen. Francis Pangilinan, who will remain as party chair, Sen. Rodolfo Biazon and former education secretary and former LP president Butch Abad.

Senate President Manuel Villar, Nacionalista Party (NP) president, lauded Roxas’ election as president.

NP and LP are expected to slug it out in the 2010 elections with Villar as NP standard bearer.

Villar said his party is also preparing for the next elections.

The Senate president said he also favors a return to the two-party system dominated by the LP and NP.

Villar will be leading the NP in marking the party’s 100th year anniversary on Wednesday.

Sen. Loren Legarda said she was also available for a presidential run.

“I am always ready; I am prepared a long time ago,” Legarda said.

Legarda is a new recruit of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) headed by businessman Eduardo Cojuangco.

She ran as vice president to movie icon Fernando Poe Jr. but lost to then Sen. Noli de Castro.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson said the early reorganization of the LP and the NP, which are both identified with the opposition, is reflective of the people’s clamor for regime change.

  1. Sen. Mar Roxas, together with former Senate President Frank Drilon and Rep. Erin Tañada will be guests in “Strictly Politics” hosted by Pia Hontiveros on ANC tonight at 8 p.m.

  2. Reliable sources said the reunification of the Liberal Party didn’t push through because Atienza wanted to be chairman of the party (vacated by Senate Majority leader Francis Pangilinan).

The same sources said that position can’t be given to Atienza because it’s party policy not to have a cabinet member as chairman to protect the party’s independence.

When asked about this demand by Atienza in a press con, Roxas said, “The party cannot be allow itself to be hostaged.”

  3. The same sources said it’s Atienza who is trying to provide the bridge between Roxas and Gloria Arroyo saying, “you will need the resoruces and network she can provide in 2010.”

There are also some within the Liberal Party who are warning Roxas not to allow Gloria to “taint” him noting that those identified with her were rejected by the people in the 2007 election. Prime example: Mike Defensor.

  4. Ellen,

A direct question to Mar Roxas:

What makes him think that he’s got what it takes or is qualified to be president, assuming of course that he becomes a presidential candidate and that he wins the presidential election in 2010 (of course this is all predicated on Gloria’s not continuing to hold on to power by foul or fair means beyond 2010)?

“Roxas vowed to address the “assaults to our democracy and freedoms,” particularly extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances that have befallen the ranks of activists the last six years.” ..Why wait until he became President, if he became President. As a Senator he could’ve than something to help prosecute Madam Whore Gloria, at least help expose for what she really is. Now is the time if Sen. Mar Roxas is quite serious of bringing back democracy in the Philippines. He has been silent all these years while Madam Whore Gloria does the prostituting of the constitution, not mentioning the bribes to the congressmen, governors and mayors. And what does Roxas have to say about the latest overpriced ZTE-NBN, Hello Garci, Fertilizer Scam, et al. By the way, where is Mar Roxas has been hiding the past 61/2 years? More hot air, what the country doesn’t need. Pilipinos has enough of BS to last a life time. Gosh, good golly!

Does the fact that he is son of a Senator, grandson of a President make him the “heir” apparent? And his being the grandson of the founder gave him the right? Is Gloria a better (assuming that her father was good) President? Will this dynasty business ever end? The answer my friend is Blowing in the wind..it is all up to the people of the Republic of the Phil..anong say ninyo?

  9. Anybody who is with the party of Danding Cojuangco, the mastermind of Ninoy’s assasination, as claimed by Martinez, should be treated as traitors like those of Glueria’s presidentables.

Martinez’ claim explains why even during Cory’s time, Ninoy’s death was never resolved. And now, this Noynoy is barking on the wrong feline.

that fool atienza of the so-called atienza wing of the LP is in no position to make demands. mar roxas is in the ascension and will be the LP candidate for 2010, while atienza’s madam Arroyo will be out by that same time.

There’s going to be a new sheriff in town by 2010, and Lito needs to ally himself more with rising star Mar Roxas, and not than the other way around. Unless Atienza wants to ally his wing to the other potential candidates: the Villar/Erap camp or the Loren/Danding side.

  13. A SWOT analysis of Mar Roxas:

    STRENGTHS:

-”De Buena Familia”;part of the influential/very wealthy Araneta/Roxas poltical clan.
-Favorite of Philippine Wall Street(”Ayala Ave”)
    -Rated K support.
    -Senatorial Topnotcher
    -”Mr.Palengke “projected image
-authorship of the Cheaper Medicine bill

    WEAKNESSES:
-”Spineless”in crisis(quickly disappears and leaves for abroad when he needs to make a stand).
-No political organization(what’s the Drilon wing of the Liberal party right now?)

    OPPORTUNITIES:

Among the the current 2010 presidentiables”,Mar Roxas appears to be most decent. He can be trusted. No taint of scandal/corruption at all.

Mar Roxas can become the most trusted political leader as soon as he finds his TRUE NORTH. Mar,Speak from the heart, not from the brain all the time.Feel the pain and real agony of the suffering Filipino masses)

THREATS:The Lacsons and Gordons of this world project an image of “CAN DO/WILL DO’ leaders who the masses might desperately cling to.

We also have the political chameleons waiting in the wings. They can become oppositionists or administration depending where the political winds blow? Where will Mar Roxas be in this wide spectrum of political animals?

  14. norpil norpil

Time to change this kind of mentality. Filipinos should stop imitating the Americans who now vote for people who can afford to fund their campaign with billions of funds from donations and their own personal accounts.

People who has the dedication, etc. to do what is right and good for country and people should be be encouraged to run regardless of whether or not they have the funds to run their election campaign.

By all means, people should prevent the Kulimbat from deciding for them the fate of their nation with money even stolen from them, taxpayers.

    Patalsikin na, NOW na!

If we study politics in and around Europe the political dynasty is no longer an issue the parlimentarian is the common man and so it should be, not wealth.
The wre are wealthy parlimentarians serving the people in Europe but by looking at their lifestyle you would never know it. Unless a stromg disciplined leader of men that understands the real problems the masses are suffering. We have such leaders such as some of ‘men of honor’ who have more than proved their mettle.

Magdilang anghel ka sana. Bakit? Ang dapat ding kurakutin during his tenure as president. Besides, abala ang mga pilipino noon to make both ends meet.

No to the trapos: children, grandchildren, etc. of any of the trapos at mga senoritos/senoritas!!!

  19. Ooops, this should read: “Ang DAMI ding kurakutan during his tenure as president sabi ng mother ko.”

Nandyan sina Bobby Jindal, Hilary Clinton, Barak Obama, Al Gore, Rudy Gulliani, Nancy Pelosi, Barbara Boxer at marami pang iba.

The Singaporeans got themselves a strong disiplined leader with a proper transparent achieveable plan and followed it even though it meant that they make changes to their cultural thinking by wewlcoming immigrants to reside and own homes there whilst assisting to build the new modern Singapore. What is required is a leader with vision and a transparent plan to enable the ordinary citizen to undersatand.

You hit it right on the head, sana si Lacson na lang.

  27. TurningPoint TurningPoint

Some realities in Philippine politics which maybe Roxas’ drawback:
    1. He’s single. Voters will question him, bakit hindi siya nag-aasawa? It’s the perception that a leader must have a spouse to show off and at kahit may anak sa labas as in the case of Erap.
    2. Not controversial. Roxas refused to indulge heated debate in the Senate. Worst, it’s perceived he’s shying away from many issues. He rather write a column but not a hard hitting one. As in showbiz, bad or good publicity is publicity.

Compared to Roxas, I will go for ramusen1213 preference for Lacson at the moment. Pero marami pang mangyayari before 2010. We don’t know yet kung magkakaroon pa ng eleksiyon hanggang nandyan si goria.

  28. How callous can she be!!!

Gloria Arroyo said: “As I was recalling the 75th birthday of Ninoy in my own introspection today, I remembered that I recently pardoned one of those convicted of killing Ninoy.”

Arroyo said the pardon granted to former sergeant Pablo Martinez was based on the same policy that guided her in freeing convicted plunderer former president Joseph Estrada. “Both the soldier and the former president were convicted according to the rule of law and pardoned according to the rule of law. The rule of law has prevailed and proved that no person is above the law.”

  29. TurningPoint TurningPoint

With goria acknowledging the pardon she granted to Pablo Martinez, Sergio Apostol maybe wetting on his pants again by saying earlier before the press that his prisidint didn’t know that she pardoned one of Ninoy’s convicted killers.

If Apostol has shame, dapat iskierda na! Or talagang makapal.

    The Equalizer:

Lakas wooing De Castro for 2010–party execs

MANILA, Philippines — The ruling Lakas- Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) is wooing Vice President Noli de Castro as a potential standard bearer in the 2010 presidential elections, two party officials disclosed on Tuesday.

In separate phone interviews, Lakas executive director Ray Roquero and legal counsel Raul Lambino confirmed to INQUIRER.net ongoing talks between Lakas leaders and the camp of De Castro.

    . . .

“We are still the biggest political party. We are confident that when the reckoning period comes, Lakas would still be victorious in the forthcoming elections”

Republic of Pangasinan.

anyone believing mar roxas can be the best bet for 2010 presidential election must have forgotten that this guy is also swallowing his own shit for his own political survival.

I still believe that the best bet for 2010, if he can be persuaded and supported by all, is Manny Pangilinan. He has proven himself capable as a manager of one of the biggest corporations in the Philippines.

    Any takers?

    pareng cocoy,

back to transparency in governance. everything’s repeorted to the people not like in this stinking administration where everything is being kept secret from the people.

What is also lacking is the transparency of political contributions. There should be a limit as to how much an individual and corporations can give to political parties. Please note that I am saying political parties, not directly to the party individual candidate. In this way, there will be no influence peddling on the party, as well as the individual candidate.

Let’s say, Php100,000 for individual, Php1M for corporations. All these should be open for scrutiny by the public.

This is one way of knowing who is spending more than what he will get in terms of salary and perks, thereby exposing candidates planning to enrich themselves in office.

Mababa lang ang kaligayahan ng mga pinoys. Pera pera lang. How can Roxas expects to win anything when the opposition bailiwicks will not get any pork barrels at all. We will never see principles anymore. We can not live without bread alone.

“Mababa lang ang kaligayahan ng mga pinoys. Pera pera lang.”

    valdemar,

  46. Former President Fidel V. Ramos expects President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to cling to power and survive until her second and final term expires in 2010 because the country has “no better options.”

“My support for her is only so incidental and secondary to my protection and enhancement of the national interest,” Ramos told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net, in an interview here Wednesday.

Asked why, he quipped: “So tell me, what are the options? Wala, lalong gugulo (None, everything will be messed up).”

    Yeah ,right…

Most importantly, do you want the endorsement of Gloria Arroyo???
